T
he Rlongtou brand not only symbolizes extraordinary
watch-making,
it
is
furthermore a cultural inheritance that carries history and emotions. Rlongtou originated from the Second World War: a love story between an American soldier Jason and a Swiss maiden Alina that took
place by the Rlongtou River. For the sake of country and fighting against fascism, Jason sacrificed his life on the battlefield. After the war, field engineers were cleaning the battlefield when they discovered a watch and returned it to its original owner. Alina saw the following engraved on the back of the watch: “Time and love coexists, I have never left”. In order to commemorate the love between herself and Jason, Alina buried this watch at Jason’s tombstone and engraved the same line onto the stone: “Time and love coexists, I have never left”. Eventually, Alina’s son Luca established a watch making workshop in 1945, and named it Rlongtou Studio, after the river where his parents met.

SAYING “I DO” TO A WEDDING PLANNER By Lisa Manfield
M
ost couples aren’t looking for a new best friend when they set out to hire a wedding planner. But that’s what they’re likely to get when they hire Arezoo Aliperti, owner of Something Borrowed Event Management and Design. “Ninety percent of my clients are now my friends,” she says. “I try to have that kind of connection with the people I work with.” In true best friend fashion, Aliperti makes a full commitment to her clients, going the extra mile to ensure their big day not only goes off smoothly, but is truly memorable and unique. “I give my full attention and am present at every event,” she says. “I make sure that I don’t sent assistants, and I stay until the very end. Sometimes I’ll even pack up the venue and walk the bride and groom to their hotel room.” Aliperti specializes in weddings and corporate events, and has also produced events for a variety of charities. “Charity galas, in particular, give me the satisfaction that I’m doing something good for the community,” she says. “I do one or two a year, including a gala I don’t charge for. For my first 10 years in business it was Canuck Place. Nowadays I pick a charity or see who approaches me. It has to be something I believe in -- typically something that is related to children, the homeless, or mental health.” She also produces the Dare to Dream Bridal Show, “a boutique style, high-end bridal show,” she says, adding, “it’s my baby.” Aliperti gravitates toward events that allow her to exercise her creativity. “With weddings you don’t get to be as creative as you might like, unless you get that special couple that lets you go, which is very rare. I’ve had that with a few clients, and it’s been amazing.”

A recent example she recalls fondly was a four-daylong Indian-American wedding. “They hired me over the phone based on a recommendation and totally gave their trust. They let me go full-on,” she says, “and we did something out of the box that wowed everyone.” For one component of the pre-wedding event, Aliperti transformed the Pan Pacific’s Crystal Pavilion into an Indian Bazaar. “We had different tents -- a henna tent, a scotch bar -- and flowers and drapes and colours. It didn’t look at all like the Crystal Pavilion. The owner even came to look at the room, as it had never been done before. The bride walked in and started crying.” For the wedding itself, Aliperti decided on a more classic approach. “We went all white and elegant, with crystals dangling from everywhere, white orchids, and glass. It was really beautiful. It was a highlight of my 2017.” If it all sounds very luxurious, Aliperti assures that hiring a wedding planner is actually very practical. “I have a whole team I work with for decor, flowers, etc., and because we all work together, we get a referral fee, but we don’t keep it, we give it back to the client,” she says. “If you do your wedding yourself, you don’t get that discount. With us, you get the discount and we give it back to you, and that covers our fee. There’s a lot of savings to be had.” Now there’s something you can feel good about saying “I do” to. n

na wore an exclusive haute couture dress by Galia Lahav from Bisou Bridal called “Georgia”. A strapless princess ballgown with sheer corset top embroidered with 3D flowers, a voluminous pleated skirt with layers of blush and ivory tulle, a rose pattern made of pearl caviar sequins, and silver accents. alk through the wrought iron doors at DWELL Living in Yaletown and chances are you will be met on the other side by Winston and Bentley. These two friendly and fluffy miniature collies are the beloved gatekeepers for business owners Gary and Shannon Nystrom. Originally hailing from the Okanagan, the duo behind DWELL Living founded their business over a decade ago with a belief that interior design was in desperate need of a redesign. Moving away from traditional solutions to common problems, they began crafting a vision to create a better way of living and building, using their signature style. Already working with a dedicated team of professionals and specialists in interior design, drafting and millwork design, they reached out and brought in additional members to create a team of specialists in project management and product procurement in furnishings, objects and fine art.

The new DWELL showroom and retail space occupies the main floor of the historic red brick building, dating back to 1915, at the corner of Homer and Drake. Within the space are separate areas constructed to be a tableau of potential for every room of the house. Every inch of DWELL is inviting, well thought-out and layered with colour and texture.
Enter the “foyer” and instantly the eye is caught by the chic juxtaposition of a navy blue, wing-back chesterfield with a wallspanning abstract painted in cool tones and yellow by a local artist. In the “dining room,” a glass-top table with a repurposed, rusted, industrial barrel base is paired with a Chihuly-esque serpentine ceiling fixture of crisp white, blown glass.

The duo has advice for those looking to modernize a room: “An affordable, relatively quick way is to look to lighting because it truly is the jewellery of the home and can be exceptionally impactful.” Building from the floor up, the DWELL design team offers a wide range of hardwood, tile and broadloom products, selected from the coasts of Italy to the historical grounds of Holland. “Selection of a suitable flooring based on durability, aesthetics, application and colour is one of the first items to be completed at the beginning of the design process...future colour palettes and material selections are based off of your flooring choices,” explains Shannon.

Setting out to create a smart, accessible and personal service that works whether their clients are accessorizing their homes or completely renovating a new purchase, this holistic approach to the design process ignited their passion. And the fact that Gary and Shannon haven’t lost their edginess shows in a recent project entitled Man Cave. In this project, the client was looking to create an unforgettable space and DWELL utilized the remains of a 747 plane. The fuselage was cut down to create a humidor cigar case, the aileron was formatted for the bar, and all was accented with recycled seatbelt bar stools in lipstick red! n 38

have been a makeup artist for many brides for over 10 years. I’ve been a maid of honour and a bridesmaid but never a bride — until this day.
It’s safe to say that I love weddings, this is why I’m so happy to share the story of my weddings’ preparations, and how I turned all those bridal years into my dream winter wedding.

Seth and I wanted our wedding to feel like an elegant winter wedding. We both love the warmth that candles and fireplaces can bring to a room, as well as the purity and elegance of white flowers. When I walked in and saw the flowers for the first time, I was truly blown away. They were gorgeous! My bouquet was a stunning overflow of beautiful white O’Hara Garden roses, Pandas Anemone, seeded eucalyptus and white roses. The flowers were imported by monterossoimportsexports.com.
As I walked into the Georgia room of the Vancouver Club, my bridesmaids surprised me with the BRIDE letter balloon, and my team of hair and makeup people were ready for us to get glammed! My look For my hair and makeup, we wanted to go with the regal look, complete with tiara. We use soft pink eye shadows, with a deeper rose for the contouring of the eyes. Dusty pink Ana V Beauty
powder blush was applied to the apples of the cheeks and then we enhanced it with a cream blush as well for better staying power. My hair was in a regal updo done by my friend and colleague Tyana Pitman. The bridal party embraced a look of classic elegance: nothing overdone, but still contained, clean and beautiful. The hair was created by Chris Funk, who said, “For the bridesmaids, I had them arrive with clean, un-styled, day old hair. Up styles always come together better on hair that isn’t freshly washed. Don’t worry if your hair is a touch greasy, dry shampoo can take care of that and adds some nice volume and texture to work with. B O U L E VA R D

I flat-iron curled and then backcombed their hair, and then brought them into a low, loose, not too messy bun. We put them to one side to complement their dresses. “The flower girls came with clean, dry hair as well. With those beautiful tiaras we wanted to keep the hair super simple and classic. I brought all the hair up to a high pony tail, and then twisted into a knot. I sprayed down all flyaway with a strong hold hairspray.�

I loved the personalized dress and making experience we used at our wedding. I met with dressmaker Semaya and she created the most angelic, flower girl dresses for our three flower girls. They were white silk satin, very simple and elegant dresses — just as you can imagine them — and we added a dreamy tulle as a detachable train at the back. The dresses were designed by Semaya Couture by Semiha Abdullah Inan.
After our hair and makeup was done, I changed into my dress and I stood by the window waiting for Seth to arrive, at which point we would do our first look. As Seth entered, we were on the opposite sides of the room; I turned around and we met in the middle. It was the most calming moment in the midst of the chaos of getting ready. n

hen a bride and groom make the decision to share their day with their closest friends and family, the resulting intimacy plays a large part in the joy that everyone there feels. Ana and Seth’s wedding ceremony was certainly one of those of days. As cherished friends and far-travelling family arrived, they entered in their finery through heavy oak doors, adorned with antique hardware, into an elegant, long, white room with an inviting, crackling fireplace. The room was tastefully decorated with chrome and glass clustered candles, translucent bamboo seating with crisp white bows, and top-heavy bouquets of cool white hydrangea.
It was fantastic backdrop for this “Winter Wonderland” themed wedding: picturesque and perfectly set. As guests shared memories and warm anecdotes about the couple, who were soon be husband and wife, the softest notes of Ave Maria began and built powerfully. Musical duo Rosemary and Eli set the mood with their performance and as the notes of Can’t Help Falling in Love began, the room the quietened. Guests instinctually turned to witness the entrance of the bridal party.

Three impeccably dressed groomsmen, sharp in classic black with silver accents, proudly led the procession. The bridesmaids followed, perfectly composed and holding the most delicate bouquets of white orchids and roses. Swathed in Greta Constantine single-shoulder, caped dresses in a luscious shade of eggplant, the bridesmaids effortlessly moved down the aisle. Close on their heels came a trio of flower girls in off-white, empirecut satin, floor-length dresses with delicate tulle trains. The three young sisters beaming as they continued through the room.
On the arm of her father — who chose pink accents with his grey suit — the resplendent bride, Ana, beamed radiantly. As the duo paused at the end of the aisle, father and daughter turned and shared a moment of closeness before embarking on her last walk as a single woman.

The bride’s dress featured an intricately embroidered bodice with whispers of mesh and delicate straps. A silver-trimmed, embellished belt created a soft break, which led to a flowing tulle and sequin skirt. Ana was a vision, from her upswept chestnut locks, banded by an Alan Anderson custom-created tiara of hand-cut Swarovski crystals, to the blush pink, velvet, Manolo Blahnik shoes that peeked out as she stepped. Ana and Seth spoke from the heart as they shared vows reflecting the sweet serendipity of a second opportunity for love after a brief, chance encounter years ago. Ana recited an ancient Hawaiian Marriage Prayer to her beloved. She spoke softly, beginning with “Before we met, you and I were halves unjoined except in the wide rivers of our minds. We were each other’s distant shore, the opposite wings of a bird, the other half of a seashell. We did not know the other then, did not know our determination to keep alive the cry of one riverbank to the other. We were apart, yet connected in our ignorance of each other, like two apples sharing a common tree.”

As Seth slipped the beautifully designed ring on her hand, Ana trembled and everyone in the room felt the emotion in their touch. Ana returned the gesture with his band and, with the pronouncement of marriage from the officiant, the two were husband and wife. This Winter Wonderland wedding exuded beauty and sophistication — from the simplicity of the floral arrangements to the choice of the historic venue and all the details in between. To all the guests, the love that Ana and Seth share was apparent, and it is the same love and excitement that all who shared the ceremony with them, felt in their hearts. n

The hot spot for the next hour was the impossibly lush flower photo wall, designed and created by television personality Sonia Beeksma for Fleurs J’adore, which was bursting with the densest hydrangea, fragrant freesia, delicate orchids, and blush pink roses – flown in directly from Italy - at the entrance of the historic venue. Cameras flashed as the bride’s Romanian auntie’s posed and toasted the new couple with their bubbles and society columnist Catherine Barr paired up celebrity guests for her signature candids.

In a well-lit alcove off to the side, photographer Charles Zuckermann captured the festivity at his Old Hollywood themed photo set-up. Guests had their best sides with their loves and best friends captured for posterity in classic black and white. Upstairs in the grand ballroom, uniformed staffed bustled adding the final crystal strings to the triumphant centrepieces and laying the cellophane guest gifts of a weighty white and milk chocolate slabs adorned with an edible photo of Ana and Seth on each side-plate.
The tables sat six and were laden with antique silver place-settings. When all were seated at their respective tables, the bride and groom were ushered in with cheers and applause. Ana and Seth beamed confidently as they entered hand-in-hand. Swept to the head table amid cheers and clapping, the couple welcomed all and the feast began. The lobster bisque was creamy and poured individually by servers, the Caesar salad crisp and tangy. The main course selections included Lemon Roasted Free Range Chicken, Prime Rib with trimmings, or a Roasted Sablefish with Dungeness Crab. All dishes fragrant and finished to perfection.
A close friend and associate of the groom MC’ed the evening, passing the microphone to many who wished the couple well and spoke to Ana’s kindness and strength of heart and Seth’s youthful ingenuity and determination of character. Together the two sat, radiating warmness for each other, as the platitudes and humorous anecdotes were layered over a delicious meal. It was the grooms’ mother who captured the guests with her heartfelt story of the early days of her young family, with Seth and his brothers, living in a one-room cabin in the interior of British Columbia. There may have been the coldest of weather outside but there was the warmest of hearths on the inside.

Groomsman Jeff added a touch of levity to the room with his retelling of a running joke between the couple. “Ana says they are marrying for better or for worse. Seth is getting better and I cannot do any worse!” whereas Seth says “We are pretty awesome. She is pretty and I am awesome!” Laughter turned to delight as the billowy drapes behind the couple parted and a magnificent five-tiered wedding cake was revealed accentuated by glittering sparklers. A luscious Pavlova slice with fresh raspberries was served to guests along with a generous top-up up of Champagne.
When the first dance song was announced, DJ Barron Sullivan put on ‘Perfect’ by Ed Sheeran and guests crowded the dance floor as the couple moved to centre, held each other close, smiled, and gazed at each other in that way only those truly in love can. It was Winston Churchill that said, “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” We wish Ana and Seth all the luxuries in the world, beginning with the joy and love that follow this day, and for every day afterwards. n

hen I met Ana and Seth, they expressed a desire to have a winter wedding, so I suggested they opt for a winter wonderland wedding theme, creating a real winter fairytale atmosphere throughout. And of course clothing and accessories were all part of the magic. The dress quest started with Ana’s engagement dress… the couple wanted an engagement photo shoot by Ana’s friend and celebrity photographer Karolina Turek.

We knew that Ana’s dress had to be very special and one of a kind, so that led us to Secret Location in Gastown. Omid, the store’s general manager, immediately showed us a dress by Katie Ermilio. The magnificent black couture gown fitted Ana so well, it seemed it was made for her. Katie Ermilio is the granddaughter of Grace Kelly’s personal clothier and her one-of-kind designs are exclusive to the Secret Location in Vancouver. When it came to choosing jewellery, we wanted unique and very exclusive pieces, so we choose Palladio, Vancouver’s premier jeweller. After describing Ana’s dress to Jason, he knew immediately what pieces to select, choosing a breathtaking Utopia Necklace set in 18k white gold with 17.99 carats of diamonds and two cultured South Sea Pearls — 15.00mm and 17.30mm — with matching Yvel earrings set in 8k white gold, and combining 14 x 22 mm white baroque South Sea Pearls set with 2.77 carats of diamonds.
A lady can never have too many diamonds, so we added a bracelet by Stephen Webster — a Thorn Cuff 18k white gold set with 1.84 carats of diamonds. And to finish the look, we chose a dinner ring by Henrich & Denzel — a Lily Ring in platinum set with 1.10 carats of diamonds.

On their wedding day, Ana wore a haute couture Galia Lahav gown called Lily Rose. Exclusively available at Bisou Bridal, the gown was a princess silhouette in a multilayer sheer dress. Hand-appliqued and beaded in an antique rose shade, the dress combined a mermaid silhouette with a top ballgown-like layer. A very low neckline and a beautiful illusion back made the dress a perfect fit for our bride. The only thing missing was diamonds and, of course, Palladio took care of that. Ana wore a Stephen Webster Magnipheasant Feather Necklace in 18k white gold, set with 66 diamonds with a weight of 2.49 carats.
Seth Wore a black custom Harry Rosen tuxedo with a very trendy Tom Ford bow tie, and Jason selected H. Moser & Cie Swiss Alp Brrrr with a stunning Blue fumĂŠ dial in an 18k white gold case, which is limited to 20 pieces worldwide to go with his tuxedo.

For Ana’s second dress, we selected another exclusive haute couture piece by Galia Lahav from Bisou Bridal called “Georgia.” A strapless princess ballgown, it had a sheer corset top embroidered with 3-D flowers, a voluminous pleated skirt with layers of blush and ivory tulle, a rose pattern made of pearl caviar sequins, and silver accents. The dress shimmered as Ana walked in and took everyone’s breath away. She also wore a faux fur cape, the perfect finale to an unforgettable winter wedding. n

onia Beeksma is a beloved fixture on Vancouver’s broadcasting scene. Viewers watch her on CTV Morning Live for traffic updates and entertainment segments — but also to see what she’s wearing. Elegant with a model’s litheness, Beeksma wears clothing with editorial fluidity that clearly conveys her passion for colour and design. Quietly, over the past couple of years, Beeksma has taken this passion to a new medium: flowers. “My inspiration [for flower arranging] comes from couture fashion,” says Beeksma. “I see dresses and colours and textures, and instantly I want to design myself. I’ve always been obsessed with

flowers, design and fashion... and two years ago I decided to combine all that!” Beeksma is already an experienced floral designer in demand — she created the wedding floral arrangements for fellow Vancouver broadcaster, Sonia Sidhu. Next, she will be working on Ana Viseroiu’s winter wedding. Viseroiu is best known for her beauty school and makeup line, AnaV. “Ana is more than a client, she has become a friend,” says Beeksma. “She not only creates the most beautiful beauty products, but she truly has the most beautiful heart and wants all woman to feel beautiful, inside and out.”

With those gracious sentiments in mind, Beeksma has conceptualized a sumptuous Winter Wonderland theme for Viseroiu’s wedding. Beeksma will be importing the products from Europe, opening up the breadth of flowers and greenery at her disposal, especially during a traditionally non-producing season. Right now she’s envisioning fluffy ranunculus and hydrangeas for texture, and delicate anemones and garden roses for vintage charm. Viseroiu’s reception will be held at the Vancouver Club, where Beeksma’s fresh flower wall and arrangements will greet guests. “Ana asked me to design flowers for her wedding because she fell in love with my European flower designs.” No coincidence here that Beeksma’s love for European fashions in general have influenced her aesthetics in floral design. She’s been honing this craft for two years, something that developed organically first as a hobby, and then into the best possible side job. Her love of flowers is evident throughout Beeksma’s home. “While I don’t have a garden — yet! — I always have freshcut flowers by my bedside and in the kitchen. But flowers aren’t meant just for vases. I love creating art with flowers.” That sounds like the perfect visionary to have designing wedding flowers. n s Photography / Charles Zuckermann

ancouver’s downtown core may be marked by a spectacular waterfront and one of the city’s busiest retail strips, but tucked among the towering glass structures and low-rise condos toward the Granville Street bridge are a number of celebrated style- and beautyoriented destinations — including the AnaV Beauty studio and Boutique Beauty School — that regularly help women (and men) look and feel their best.
Vancouver Medi Spa Conduct an online search of Vancouver Medi Spa (1060 Hornby Street) and you’ll find reviews and testimonials praising owner Kam Dhanda for knowledge and experience in the realm of aesthetics. In some cases, she’s even credited for changing the lives of her clients through her work in laser hair removal and skin tightening and rejuvenation. A researcher who has both studied and taught the physics of laser, Dhanda launched Vancouver Medi Spa in 2014 with the goal of empowering and making women feel more confident. Situated inconspicuously within a row of commercial residences on the ground floor of a downtown condo, the cosy facility offers a range of laser treatments, such as non-invasive facelifts, body contouring and lip remodelling. Additional medical procedures such as rosacea therapy, wart removal and snoring therapy are also available. Operating with the understanding that people’s holistic health is interconnected with the way they look and feel, Dhanda works closely with her clients to ensure effective treatments and outcomes. Mine & Yours Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Fendi and Isabel Marant are just some of the designer labels you’ll find on the racks of local style destination Mine & Yours (1025 Howe Street) — all with heavily discounted tags. Largely considered one of Vancouver’s first luxury consignment shops, the eco-conscious boutique has been running since 2013 — initially, out of cofounder Jigme Nehring’s living room. The business, which offers shoppers cash upfront for preloved designer goods, and then sells it for a fraction of the retail price, did so well that it moved into a dedicated retail space in the downtown core last year. Here, visitors will find a curated assortment of women’s apparel, shoes, special-event wear and bags and accessories from brands that range from the classic (Gucci) to the contempo-

rary (Acne) to the avant garde (United Nude) — some of them with the original tags still attached. The stock is a direct reflection of the women who consign with the shop, says Nehring, and the evolving taste of the city’s most discerning fashionistas. “I’m really impressed by the cool, kind of up-and-coming designer brands that come into our store and how our customers know about them,” Nehring adds.
W Lash Beautique As one of Vancouver’s premier lash lounges, W Lash Beautique (891 Helmcken Street) knows a thing or two about how to create — and maintain — a pair of fluttery, gorgeous peepers. Formerly known as Wink Beauty Lounge, the facility was the city’s first full-service lash lounge when it launched in Gastown in 2004. More than a decade later, it continues to offer services designed to enhance the “windows of the soul,” including eyelash extensions, lash lifts (essentially a “perm” that helps curl stubbornly straight eyelashes) and brow tinting. Owner Vivian Ko Gooch even has plans to introduce brow henna and microblading in the near future. And although W Lash’s downtown digs aren’t as expansive as they used to be — the space is about half the size of the original Gastown boutique with only three chairs — the intimate, appointment-only lounge still consistently brings in women of all ages and backgrounds looking for longer or more voluminous lashes for everyday wear or ahead of a big event. “Even though eyelash extensions are no longer new to the industry, there’s still so much to learn and experience,” says Gooch.

Wardrobe Apparel Tired of shopping at the same boutiques around Vancouver, many of which offered a similar aesthetic, Alexandra Thompson founded Wardrobe Apparel (67 East Cordova Street) in 2014 with one goal in mind: to introduce Vancouverites to a selection of quality, one-a-kind womenswear, while helping them discover their personal styles. Rather than offering up-to-the-minute pieces that capitalize on fleeting trends, the operations director and buyer scours the globe for coats, jumpsuits and dresses that exude a certain timelessness and sophistication. Neon tulle skirts by Fyodor Golan and menswear-inspired blazers by E. Tautz line the racks of Wardrobe Apparel’s airy, studio-like space, for example. Shoes and accessories include watersnake-leather heels by Chelsea Paris and structural bronze-plated rings by celebrity jeweller Imogen Belfield. Some of the boutique’s most popular garments are its evening gowns, which boast eye-catching features such as metallic, paperbag-style skirts and sheer, polka-dot sleeves that prevent “same dress” incidences from occurring at cocktail parties and soirees. “There are always a lot of classic shapes and classic pieces,” Thompson says of Wardrobe Apparel’s expertly edited stock. “But there’s always a twist, like a really cool fabric or a cool colour that makes it pop in a unique way.” n 72

t is Friday night on Oahu and as the sun lowers into the horizon the sky is painted glowing hues of glorious red, orange, pink and blue.

Sax and violin are rarely played together, it’s a very unique sound that a lot of people haven’t heard, but love when they do.
here are few things in life that capture the heart and intrigue of humans more than that of a fantastic love story. And Rosemary Siemens and Eli Bennett, both renowned musicians, are in the midst of a great unfolding love story. “We met through music,” Rosemary says, “he played on my first two albums,” she finishes. Listening to the newlyweds talk, I am struck by their friendship and the ease of their relationship, “We were best friends. Our friendship evolved into love, and now we are husband and wife, and it is incredible to be able to share music together,” Eli explains. Rosemary and Eli are looking forward to collaborating more with their music and will be releasing their first music video, a saxophone and violin rendition of Enya’s Only Time, in February 2018. “Sax and violin are rarely played together, it’s a very unique sound that a lot of people haven’t heard, but love when they do,” Rosemary notes. The couple’s joint music exudes soul and offers insight into the true depth of their relationship. Listening to Rosemary and Eli play hints that there may be a subtle advantage of making music fuelled by love. “There’s emotion behind it, there’s soul behind it, there’s love behind it. You feel the music even more so,” says Eli.

ock and Roll Hall of Famer David Lee Roth once famously rhapsodized, “Money can’t buy happiness — but it can buy you a yacht, big enough to pull up right alongside it!”
Somehow that summarizes how success is often measured by excess. And in the world of high-rollers there simply is no better barometer for success than a yacht. In recent years the nautical world has experienced staggering growth in luxurious megacrafts: yachts that range anywhere from 50 feet and can quickly spiral upwards of 350 feet.

At what point does the vessel morph from boat to yacht? “There really is no technical definition point,” says Bob Pappajohn, president of Vancouver-based M&P Yacht Centre, Western Canada’s premier yacht dealer since 1957. “When they hit around the 55-foot mark and larger; generally most people refer to it then as being a yacht. You will meet some who invite you to see their yacht and it may only be 20 feet long. But typically, when you get north of 50 feet it’s a yacht.” A search of watercraft that hit the extreme limits in size, scope and cost, finds England’s Chelsea Football Club owner Roman Abramavich’s Eclipse.

A veritable ocean liner, it dwarfs nearby tankers in its path with masts higher than Big Ben, and boasts a sticker price of about half a billion dollars US. But it’s not necessarily smooth sailing, and these behemoths can create major headaches. “The Eclipse is roughly 441 feet and once you’re north of about 150 feet there aren’t many places where you can go tie up. Here in the Pacific Northwest we have deep water but these mega-sized boats are so deep, there are harbours you can’t even get into.”

Typically yachts with theatre rooms and swimming pools are among the primary requests for M&P’s elite clientele, and Pappajohn noted that such options do serve multi-purposes. “Theatre rooms transform into nightclubs as you go bigger and the pools get covered over and become translucent dance floors.” But alas, the mega-yacht game is not something everyone can afford to play.
“There are so many variables when you get to the larger size range,” he replies, when asked to estimate the average cost of such luxury. “Boats in the 100- to 200foot range mega-yacht category might be anywhere from $10 to $30 million US. Once you go over 200 feet — the sky’s the limit. It really is a rarified world.” n

y journey with Ana and Seth began in 2016. I was organizing our annual bridal show and looking for a make up artist to join our team. A mutual friend introduced me to Ana. I had not met Seth at that point, but Ana told me then she wanted me to plan their wedding when the time came. A few months later Ana announced her engagement and the rest as they say, is history. After meeting and getting to know them better, we agreed the Vancouver Club would be the right choice for their ceremony and reception. Our selection was well founded; the BC Wedding Awards had recently been named the Vancouver Club among the top-three finalists for a 2017 Best Wedding Reception Venue (Hotel or Banquet Halls). s Photography / Karolina Turek

Among its attributes the Vancouver Club’s warmth and character made the winter cold irrelevant. The club’s location in the heart of downtown Vancouver made a perfect back drop to Ana and Seth’s “Winter Wonderland themed wedding”. Inside, the Vancouver Club’s impressive architecture was a notable attribute. We imagined guests arriving in the grand foyer, leisurely making their way through the welcoming lobby, and ascending the elegant staircase to the second floor where Seth and Ana would host both their ceremony in a private venue.

We chose the University room for the ceremony for it’s simple yet elegant ambience. The white fireplace provided a perfect frame for our bride and the groom. Candles and flowers positioned throughout the room contributed to a cozy and romantic mood. Following an inspiring and heart-warming wedding ceremony, guests moved up one level, the Ballroom – a graciously accommodating venue featuring a vintage look with a modern twist notable for its dark wood and sparkling chandeliers. The glow from candlelight against an all-white decor further reinforced Ana and Seth’s romantic “Winter Wonderland” look and feel. While I think it’s fair to say that Ana and Seth’s guests enjoyed the Vancouver Club from start to finish, the evening was far from over for our wedding couple. After leaving the club, Ana and Seth were whisked by a limousine to the nearby Sutton Place Hotel Vancouver to begin their honeymoon. Throughout their stay the Sutton Place’s professional staff treated Ana and Seth royally. Among others, the hotel concierge made every effort to ensure their stay would be flawless and memorable. Ana and Seth chose the presidential suite, a hideaway reserved for VIP guests, featuring exclusive luxury amenities, large living room, dining area and exquisite and spacious bedroom and dressing room. Suffice to say it was an idyllic setting for a newly weds to savour their wedding night. Adding to Sutton Place’s appeal, the renowned Boulevard Kitchen & Oyster Bar is just an elevator ride away. Set just off the hotel’s lobby, Boulevard provided the perfect spot to dine the following day and toast their new beginning in the Craft-Cocktails and Champagne bar.
