Summer By Lisa Manfield
T
hey say if you really love something, you have to let it go. But in the case of Vancouver’s fleeting summer, that is definitely not true. When the first inklings of the impending season change start to hit in mid-August — the slightly shorter days, the morning chill in the air, the browning leaves and that familiar smell of fall — it’s time to dig in your heels and hang on to summer for just a little while longer. And fortunately, in this city, it’s easy to do so, with summer fun that extends well into September, when the weather is typically still warm enough to convince ourselves that the dog days aren’t over quite yet. Here are some events to add to your list for August and September.
Abbotsford Air show If jetting away didn’t make it onto your summer to-do list, here’s your chance to live vicariously through those who take flight on the regular. The Abbotsford Air Show takes off August 10 for three days of thrilling air shows featuring all-Canadian favourites the Snowbirds alongside a variety of airborne acrobats including the US Navy Blue Angels and SkyHawks Parachute demos. Buy a day pass or stay the whole weekend; you can even camp on site.
the fAir At the PNe Practically synonymous with the end of summer, the Fair at the PNE has been the perfect way to round out summer since 1910. It’s not only the longest running annual event in Vancouver, it’s also the most varied, with something for everyone including agriculture, shopping, food, music, shows, games, and rides. The Fair at the PNE takes place August 18 - September 3.
7-9. Catch big name bands like The Killers, Florence and the Machine, Metric and Blue Rodeo while indulging in some tasty treats at a variety of restaurant pop-ups, long-table dinners, and food truck favourites. You can also check out art installations while sipping local wine and craft brew to complete the trio of awesomeness this festival serves up.
westwArd music festivAl Prefer your music sans mosquitos? The Westward Music Festival returns this year at multiple indoor venues around Vancouver including the Vogue, Fox Cabaret, Rio Theatre, Fortune Sound Club, Biltmore Cabaret, and the Orpheum. Performers include Kali Uchis, Kelela, Poppy, Roni Size and Blood Orange. The second annual festival runs September 13-16.
richmoNd Night mArket Running until October 8, the Richmond Night Market brings epic food and ephemeral fun together in one lively atmosphere. See local talent perform on stage while you sample food stall offerings, explore the magical dino park and try the amazing race inflatable obstacle course. The Richmond Night Market is open Friday and Saturday from 7 pm - midnight, and Sunday and holidays from 7 pm - 11 pm. As the last days of summer unfold and fall becomes inevitable, keep in mind that autumn does bring with it a fresh calendar of fun that’ll make those browning leaves and shortening days seem a little less bleak. n
skookum festivAl Only great music, art and food could possibly make Stanley Park a better place to hang out during the waning days of summer. Enter Vancouver’s Skookum Festival September

very month, Boulevard sends photographer and chief Alfonso Arnold to scan our wonderful city to find true and passionate artists to interview, snap, and feature. This month Alfonso was lucky enough to catch up with the multitalented violin virtuoso Suzka Mares. Boulevard: Welcome Suzka to the Spotlight! Can you tell us a little bit of your background and history? Suzka: I am a world traveller and classically trained violinist who composes, sings, and plays live on hip-hop, dub, reggae, world fusion, meditation, and electronic tracks. Presently, I am completing my 5th original studio album titled “Elevation” which is very exciting! I was a professional downhill skier in my teens with a sports and academic scholarship at the University of Nevada, Reno. Additionally, I’m a certified yoga teacher which helps me stay flexible in my mind and body, as well as helping others. Boulevard: Out of all the amazing work and life that you get to enjoy, which activity or experience do you enjoy the most? Suzka: The activity I enjoy the most is being in nature and spending time with animals. It’s therapy for me in such a busy world. There’s a beautiful and natural flow with animals and the natural world that just makes sense. Sometimes we don’t make sense, but they do.
Boulevard: You have recently worked with Canadian legendary hip-hop rapper Maestro Fresh Wes. How challenging is it to incorporate such a classical instrument in that genre? Suzka: If the beat is right, then the melody and ideas come easily. I decided to mix violin in hip-hop by doing my own version of the famous classical compositions. “Vivaldi’s Four Seasons”. I sent Maestro one of the beats and he loved it so much he wrote to it. We been working together ever since. I even had the good fortune of playing live with the RZA, from the infamous Wu-Tang Clan. Boulevard: You have a lot of exciting plans coming up. Can you tell us about your upcoming future and what we can expect? Suzka: I can’t tell you the future exactly, but soon I will be heading to Tanzania, Africa to shoot some music videos in the Serengeti. I want to spend some time with the animals that need the world’s attention right now, connecting with the landscape and people. I will also be collaborating with a few African artists in music and film. I look forward to doing some humanitarian work as well, along with empowering youth through music, writing, and expression. Boulevard: That is absolutely inspiring Suzka! We wish you all the best and thank you for taking the time to take great photos, and sharing some insight of your amazing life and art. ■ Learn more about Suzka and her music: Instagram: suzkasound Facebook Page: Suzkamusic

When the doors of the newest location of Kimberlite Diamonds opened on South Granville, in the back right-hand corner, a woman sat painting on small grey boards. Wearing a tea-length off-white gown, Zhu Wenjun was creating a series of illustrations that showcased small elements of nature blended with jewels. As Chief Designer for Kimberlite, Zhu traveled to Vancouver to share in the story of the North American expansion for this, by industry standards, relatively new diamond jewelry company.

In 2015, Kimberlite Diamond was, and is, the only jewelry brand from China to showcase at the annual ultra-exclusive Baseworld pavilion in Switzerland alongside industry legends such as Bulgari, Graff, Harry Winston, and Chopard. Think Smart.
LIVE BIG. dd the function of an entire room without adding square footage! It is possible to make any room perform like one twice the size without compromising comfort, function or aesthetics. In a city like Vancouver where space is at a premium this kind of concept is a no-brainer. It allows people to live more efficiently allowing them to stay in the same home, or make their new home function as one twice the size. One room in an apartment or home can accommodate a home office, living room and bedroom, or three kids can live happily in a room designed for one. Imagine opening your 17” console table to seat your entire family of 10 for dinner without having a dedicated dining room. Our award-winning, space-saving solutions make this a reality. Living rooms, bedrooms, home offices, or kids’ rooms – any size or type of space can benefit from a multi-functional approach to efficient, flexible design. It is really about maximizing your square footage and making it work for you. Rethink, reinvent and multiply your space with these concepts. resourcefurniture.com

A WEST-COAST BALANCE BETWEEN MAN & NATURE:
I
mmersed in the landscape, this 11,000 sq. ft residence titled “UBC Private Residence” is nestled near the quiet shores of West Point Grey. Its landscape was designed around a contemporary home with one theme in mind – to strike balance between man and nature.
Winner at the 2018 Ovation Awards, Werner Construction took home Best Custom Home Over $5 Million and Best Landscaping with Swick’s Organic Landscaping. This dynamic team created both a home and an outdoor space that not only provides a sense of privacy and intimacy but a home that also resonates with its natural West Coast surroundings. A Modern Haven: Entering the home, you are greeted by a secluded entrance next to a koi pond. Images of light and water fill the home and your eyes seamlessly travel to the back entrance with a negative edge pool that appears to spill into the Burrard Inlet – a beautiful view of the North Shore. With its use of materials like clear cedar, concrete and aluminum this home fits flawlessly with its natural surroundings. From the main staircase made from blackened stainless steel welded into place on site, to the walls that were strategically built for and around the owner’s extensive art collection including the two totem poles designed specifically for the property by a local artist, this home is a testament to the art of modern design blended with the craftsmanship of a true West Coast custom built home.
26
B O U L E VA R D
A Secluded Oasis: To enhance the clean lines of the home, several landscaping features were installed such as, the Corten steel planters that were added to accentuate the overall modern design of the house, the luscious evergreen groundcover plantings to soften the sharp edges of the house, native basalt boulders placed in the water features to echo the rocky shores of the nearby beaches, and the Cedar and Yew hedges posing as a natural privacy barrier, creating a relaxing space for the homeowners. As night falls and one strolls through the property, the theme of balance and serenity echoes like two musical instruments playing in perfect harmony. A landscape that successfully captures the essence of a modern home standing in its very own serene park.
A Striking Balance: An exquisite balance between an exposed modern structure with breathtaking views and a landscape that fosters a feeling of solitude and serenity – a true balance between man and nature. ■

nside the “Savage Ground House, designers have combine contemporary arts and traditional interiors to make this 1,100 square meter, 2 story home look sumptuous and artistic. Each detail has its representative meaning: marble columns signify strength and power; crystal represents purity and subtlety, and yellow metal is an inexhaustible symbol of energy and heat. The designers from Rosko Design adopt the symmetrical design in the traditional classic style, complementing it with modern and philosophical works of art. The soft lighting highlights the main accents in the rooms, and shades of dark and light tones help create a harmonious interior. Upon entry is a spacious and open hall with warm lighting softly and elegantly placed on the glossy marble floor. The gilded crystal chandelier brings an unique atmosphere and luxury to the interior.
A corridor with gray marble columns on both sides separates the living and dining area from the common space and ends at a spiral staircase. The base of each marble column has glowing blocks installed, giving off warm light and making the columns look as though they are floating above the ground. More uniquely, an aquarium is built into the floor, where colorful fish can be seen swimming. This unusual design adds interest and life to the space, allowing the owner to enjoy it, while surprising the guests. The two-story high ceiling and the brass and crystal chandelier from the Portuguese brand LUXXU sumptuously decorates the living room. The large, floor-to-ceiling windows not only brings the beautiful view indoor, but allows for plenty of sunlight, which takes away the gloominess of the cool gray tones and brings out a different texture in the marbles.

In contrast to the hardness marbles bring to the living area, the master bedroom is decorated with a feeling of softness.
The fireplace, framed by elegant gray structures and two pendant hanging lamps, gives a warm and cozy feel to this slightly cold living room. A decorative panel with a complex foliage pattern stretches from the top of the fireplace to the ceiling. Furniture by German Walter Knoll are used for its simplicity and elegance. An abstract painting by Catherine Severac is hung on a central wall, making it the main piece of art in the room. In contrast to the hardness marbles bring to the living area, the master bedroom is decorated with a feeling of softness. A wide bed is placed against velvet wall upholstery and on gray-coffee tinted carpet. Opposite the bed is the TV-zone, where a TV is installed on the wall and a simple cabinet is placed beneath it. Surrounding it is a decorative panel with emerging images of trees and birds. On one side is a small dressing table coupled with a high vanity mirror with lights around its perimeter. In front of the mirror is a hanging chandelier looking like a moonlight bird hovering in the air, quite poetic and interesting. Sculptures placed around the room also add an artistic touch. Modern and classic, hard and soft, and highly contrasting elements intertwine harmoniously in this house, creating a noble and elegant living space. n

ompared to the past whirlwind of a decade—a period comprised of regular encounters with stars like Michael Bublé and Chris Martin, and dizzying trips to locales as far away as Fiji, Ireland, and Cambodia—this last year for Erin Cebula has been pretty laidback. Routine, even. But the B.C.–based television host, writer, and producer wouldn’t have it any other way.
“I came back [to Vancouver] and decided to give myself permission to basically slow down,” she says. “That’s been my focus for 2018.”
A graduate of the British Columbia Institute of Technology’s broadcast-journalism program, Cebula got her on-air start as an arts-and-entertainment reporter for Global TV in 2000. These days, however, she’s best known for her work on Entertainment Canada, where she held the role of West Coast correspondent for 12 years. During that time, she hosted and produced countless celebrity segments, carving out a comfortable niche through her in-depth— and exceptional—coverage of popular series like Survivor, Vikings, and Outlander.

When Cebula was let go from that position last summer due to internal restructuring, she took it as an opportunity to re-evaluate her health and habits. The pace she was operating at wasn’t sustainable, she reflects, and she was starting to see it in her well-being. As a result, the Aldergrove-born personality embarked on a threemonth fitness-and-wellness challenge, and began investing heavily in self-care—whether that meant prioritizing exercise or just spending quality time with her partner, Shawn, and rescue pup, Pickles, in their Mount Pleasant home.
“My energy has just gone through the roof, and I would say my relationships have really changed in a lot of positive ways, too,” Cebula says of the time off. “It’s a real luxury to have that time to devote to yourself—and not everyone can—but, man, what a difference it makes in everything.”
“It’s a real luxury to have that time to devote to yourself—and not everyone can—but, man, what a difference it makes in everything.” That’s not to say that Cebula has pumped the brakes on her broadcast career. The amiable host is Global TV’s “go-to gal” for lifestyle content, and she continues to appear in radio and TV spots for the B.C. Children’s Hospital Dream Lottery, a cause she’s supported for a decade. Travel remains a large part of the 43-year-old’s life, too—though now on her own terms.
Last year, she and her husband toured Kenya, South Africa, and Madagascar—destinations that the couple’s late mothers had dreamt of exploring— and she has plans to tackle Mexico, Poland, and

Croatia in the near future. Tacked on Cebula’s dream-board is also the working name of an island retreat she hopes to open in B.C. somewhere down the line. She envisions a remote-but-stillaccessible romantic hideaway, where stressed-out city folks or those in high-pressure jobs—like she once was—can go to unwind and reconnect with loved ones.
“I want it to be this beautiful place that makes it feel like you’re in another world,” she explains. “That’s the next goal.” For now, Cebula isn’t thinking too much about the details. She’s taking life day by day—and, yes, slowing down to smell the roses whenever she can. “I like the magic of the universe,” she says. “I like to see what comes at me, too, when I just relax.”■

arriet Guadagnuolo is thrilled. Having started her career in fashion while still in the womb, seeing her first love— Blubird—move to its spacious new location on Alberni Street next to iconic Versace and Saint Laurent, marks a day of intense satisfaction. This moment has been a decade in the making for her and her mother, Catherine. “It’s been ten years since we opened our first store, and it’s really nice to see an independent retailer like ourselves situated – and, holding its own – among these highend global luxury brands,” says Catherine Guadagnuolo, President and Founder of Vestis Fashion Group.

The family-owned boutique opened its first location in 2008 and quickly developed a loyal following of teens and young women who enjoyed the glitter and bedazzling of early Juicy Couture and urban-inspired
streetwear labels. Over the years, Blubird has matured alongside its customer, and in its current incarnation is a stylish fashion destination for women in their 20’s to 40’s and beyond. The Blubird woman is polished and confident, enjoys having a bit of fashion fun, and always seeks high-quality pieces that are unique yet affordable. While Harriet was (literally) growing into the position of Product Development, Catherine was expanding the company to include a pair of Blubird’s (Alberni Street, Oakridge Centre), and licenses for respected brands Max Mara, Weekend Max Mara, and in 2014 welcomed Italian fine fashion jewellery brand Pomellato to the portfolio. Known as the Vestis Fashion Group, the mother-daughter team oversees the operations of ten retail stores, with Harriet leading seasonal buying trips to New York City, Los Angeles, Milan, and Paris to ensure they continue to cater to a market that finds Blubird’s selection irresistible.
The 2,200-square-foot Blubird store at 1108 Alberni Street offers a full shopping experience where, Harriet explains, “Our clients come to have outfits curated.” Blubird does not employ ‘sales associates’ but ‘instore style experts’ who work with every guest in a collaborative process to elevate and inspire a personal sense of uniqueness. The original Blubird was easily missed, stranded on the eastern end of Alberni between Tiffany and Co. and CIBC banking—but once you found it—odds were more likely than not you would be returning. The selection of garments, accessories, and footwear was always fresh, innovative, and exciting for those raised in the mall and weaned on Robson Street. A move one block west brings new upscale neighbours which include Italian apparel and lifestyle brand Moncler, cashmere king Brunello Cucinelli, the iconic and irrepressible Prada, and the always bustling Urban Fare. With floor to ceiling glass windows inviting-in walk-by traffic, the boutique has high ceilings, a spacious layout and the modern decor and design. In the centre a gilded bird-cage ceiling fixture dangles over a canary yellow lounge chair, fixtures are brass, mirroring abounds, and the floor, walls, and furniture are soft neutrals which keep the eye drawn to the colours and patterns of the clothing. Brands include some of the hottest designers and labels like Zimmerman, Tibi, Frame Denim, Opening Ceremony, Vince, and the classics’ Red Valentino and M Missoni.
For fall/winter trends, Harriet, in her infinite fashion wisdom, says “we will see a modern twist on suiting with a nod towards 1980’s empowered tailoring...a lot of dynamic, clean- cut blazers with unexpected twists... in wool and cashmere...in rich neutral tones like camel and tobacco.” As for the next ten years? Harriet’s enthusiasm is evident as she exclaims “I can’t wait to see where Blubird goes next! We’ve come a long way and have evolved in many ways, but at the bottom line we are dedicated to serving our loyal clients who have enjoyed the ride with us.” n

A Family Dream in Grandview Heights

his year’s B.C. Children’s Dream lottery home is a lavishly spacious and luxuriously appointed contemporary dream home perched on an incline in the aptly-named Grandview Heights area of South Surrey. It’s situated on a large corner lot with a view that stretches far and away to the north, over green farmlands to Vancouver’s beautiful North Shore Mountains.
With 5000 square feet on three levels, the home is designed for gracious family living and entertainment. There’s a great room on the main floor plus a study, guest suite, open kitchen with an adjoining spice kitchen and airy dining room. Folding glass walls in the great room open to a generously-proportioned outside covered eating and entertainment area that offers both space and privacy. With its high vaulted ceiling, indooroutdoor flow and sleek kitchen bar, the great room is the heart of this dream home. As the pièce de résistance, a dazzling showstopper of a contemporary chandelier in glittering crystal and chrome hangs from the 21” ceiling.
...this home has been beautifully created for living a family dream. “My husband and I work together,” says Jas Rai, who is the designer half of MGR Group’s builderdesigner team; her husband Arvi is the builder. “And every home we build is a dream home! When I was designing this space, I thought carefully about how I would want it to be if it were my own home and then I added features I would want myself – fireplaces, outsize windows, stonework, an infrared sauna, a built-in wine display cooler in the dining room and an elevator for wheelchair access if the need should ever arise.”
“This is a social house for warm and family relaxation and I envisioned it being well used on all three floors every day. I designed the master

bedroom with a chic hotel suite feel and a curvy Juliet balcony open to the great room. Downstairs I created a more muscular look, with stonework, exceptionally high 10’ ceilings, a bar, exercise room, sauna and an amazing home theatre with a 114” screen. I included fireplaces for visual interest throughout the house, windows to bathe the space in as much natural light as possible, and an abundance of chrome and crystal chandeliers to heighten the style. I always find that crystal gives that wonderful richness to a space. This home, a blend of both contemporary and traditional architecture, has detailed finishing inside and the lighting highlights that beauty.”

arly morning call-times are inevitable in the television industry, but when you are morning reporter Sonia Beeksma, that 3:15 am alarm can wreak havoc on your personal life and your skin. So when she bounced into our 9 am Estée Lauder photo shoot with a radiant glow and smile on her face, I had to remind myself that she was full of energy as it was actually early afternoon in her world.
Known in Vancouver as a media personality (television, radio, MC) and budding floral designer, she is also a familiar face having played the role of ‘reporter’ and ‘news anchor’ on at least a dozen of locally shot television series including fan favourites Lucifer, iZombie, and Supernatural.
Born in India, her family moved to Canada when she was eight years old. As the youngest of four she admits that she may have been spoiled, gesturing ‘just a little,’ but it was the Indian tradition of ‘encouraging’ children to sing and dance in front of relatives that that gave her strength and courage. “Thanks to the powerful and apprehensive performances...I got over stage fright at a very young age,” she says and laughs. Always very outgoing, Sonia danced professionally through most of her teen years and sang at church and credits White Rock Christian Academy for shaping her into the woman that she is today. A career in Broadcasting was a natural fit for this go-getter and within three years she was “shocked and honoured” to be acknowledged by the British Columbia Association of Broadcasters with the receipt of the Broadcaster of Tomorrow Award. In 2018, she is part of CTV Morning Team and “is fulfilling another dream. Joining CTV last fall was probably the best decision I made in terms of my career. I love the people, and I love the show.”
While she jokes that she “doesn’t find my job very challenging,” it is this positive approach that has kept her moving forward, and when it comes to her daughter and her faith, she wants acknowledges that she has been blessed. “I have been entrusted with an amazing little human being that looks up to me, and I want to be the best example that I can.”

When choosing a model for the Boulevard campaign, Estée Lauder sought a Vancouver woman who epitomized their brand in both beauty and brains. Founder Estée Lauder famously said “I didn’t get here by dreaming or thinking about it. I got here by doing it.” Sonia is a woman who is definitely ‘doing it,’ but she does admit that sometimes a thick skin is needed, not only for protecting your sanity but in having the ability to remain professional and be able to deliver the story whether it leaves a smile on your face or not.
Sonia settles onto her chair, closes her eyes, and gives in to the relaxing magic of Estée Lauder’s Multifaceted ReNutriv Ultimate Diamond eye applicator, as guided by the expert hands of Jason Hadikin. As the Executive Educator for the brand, Hadikin is on-set to ensure that Sonia’s personality is captured by not only the make-up but that she experiences the process. Between the make-up chair and stylist Sarah D’Arcey’s pull rack, the banter is fun and light-hearted, and very quickly she is off to change into her first look for photographer Alfonso Arnold.
Very much a Vancouver woman, Sonia finds the city captivating, albeit very expensive, but “loves the essence of a big city with a small town feel.” For someone who is constantly in motion, our west coast city offers a touch of tranquility, especially when she needs to slow down. Whether this is found in a quiet cafe serving the perfect Americano Misto with almond milk or feeling the wind in her hair as she cycles along a quiet road, she knows that at home is where she loses time – especially when lost in a hug with her young daughter.
... I want to be the best example that I can. 4 O生 U活 L E VA R D 60 新B居
Sonia Beeksma is embracing her current status as Vancouver’s ‘It Girl’ knowing that it may not last and even if it is only Warhol’s proverbial 15 minutes of fame, she knows it will be time well-spent leading her into whatever the next stage of her life holds. n

To many in creative circles, wearing your influences on your sleeve is just not good for business. For luxury fashion empire-builder Howard Colton, designing opulent fashion boutiques heavily influenced by St. Laurent and Dior is great for business given the upscale clientele that spends time at Colton’s Couture. uxury designer goods can be emotionally broken down into three moods – the timeless classics that make a body swoon like Vivier, Valentino, and YSL; the trendy heart-tuggers like Gucci, Kenzo, and Moschino; and the exciting uncertainty of the future as defined by the ever-changing Off-White and MSGM. Colton’s Couture curates each store’s offering based on these moods and feedback from clientele. Eschewing the seasonal collection model, in-house buyers place orders for the product from the company’s office in Italy on a weekly basis, and given the intensity of client demand, will request overnight delivery by air. While it sounds unbelievable that founder and CEO Howard Colton has managed to create such an experience in the midst of the biggest shopping centres in Vancouver, it is true. In Richmond Centre, next to incredibly popular make-up and mid-range jewelry stores, the interior screams modern St. Laurent retail with ceiling high slabs of Italian marble in grey and black, and low display tables of chrome and mirrors. The creation of the boutique took many months of intensive design and installation. “If I had known how difficult and expensive installing the marble would be, I would have used synthetic marble like St. Laurent!” says Howard with a broad smile and a wink.
Howard Colton is originally from Montreal and grew up in a blended family headed by socialite Phyllis Colton and Russell Goldberg, one of Canada’s remaining men’s bespoke suiting purveyors who is now at 92 years of age is celebrating his 68th year in business. As an early adopter of the internet as a sales vehicle, Howard has created, developed, and sold 100’s of millions of dollars of online ventures, all with an underlying theme of luxury. In 2012, in a risky yet visionary move, Howard created a private shopping club, Colton’s Personal Couture, with a $25,000 membership price-tag based in a 15th-floor penthouse in central Richmond. After transforming the space into a dreamy cream and gold Dior homage, he stocked it to the fullest with $500,000 of designer goods and jewelry that the cities 1% could not live without. Membership included many perks including limousine service, ‘fashion confidantes,’ customized shopping rooms, and a leisurely shopping pace.

An extremely ambitious undertaking, Colton’s Personal Couture was the first bricks and mortar location for a businessman with a history of only selling luxury online. After a ‘nudge’ from his daughter Emanda to consider retail, ‘Colton’s Couture’ was launched as a pop-up in 2016 within an underwhelming storefront in the upscale Oakridge Centre. Sales were impressive, and soon the location became permanent. Richmond Centre followed in October 2017, and the largest edition Colton’s Couture opened this past June at Metropolis at Metrotown. Acknowledging that “every retailer cannot possibly sell everything in their stores,” and with three locations operating by the end of 2018, Howard was pleased to share that a McArthurGlen Outlet store is in the works for 2019. While Colton’s Personal Couture was furloughed in 2016, plans to improve the private member’s concept and re-launch in time for the 2018 winter holiday season are already underway.

Eye Catcher Karma Revero By Kelly Bai

ith me are two young international students awaiting to test drive a Karma Revero at the sales center. The thought of buying a Revero crossed their minds as it looked quite flashy on the street. Its long curved front face with a highly recognizable split grille, coupled by smooth and tensioned lines definitely make this car an eye catcher. But the fact is, it is simply a replica of its predecessor Fisker Karma with no significant changes to its exterior. Let’s learn more about its history. Fisker Karma, Karma Revero’s predecessor, was launched by Henrik Risker in 2012. Risker was the CEO of Fisker Automotive, and the designer of Fisker Karma, who designed classic cars like Aston Martin DB9, V8 Vantage, BMW Z8. His design is certainly remarkable, but mechanical failures led to poor sales. Fisker Automotive declared bankruptcy in 2013. It was acquired by China’s Wanxiang Group in 2014 and was renamed Karma Automotive, using the Karma Revero to rebuild its brand. Revero’s overall design and powertrain are virtually the same as Fisker Karma. However, there are slight modifications made in key areas. The 20.8 kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack has the same capacity as Fisker Karma’s pack, but with a new battery-cell chemistry. Karma used a new computer control system while Revero supports DC fast charging capability, and a built-in 4G LTE connection that allows updates to be done remotely like Tesla. These two major features were not previously available.

Equipped with an extended-range electric powertrain, a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine, two electric motors and a 21 kilowatt-hour battery pack, the Revero gets 80 kilometers of pure electric range and 480 kilometers total range. It recharges to 80% full in 24 minutes at a DC Fast Charging station. Its solar roof also provides supplemental electric power. At this year’s Washington Motor Show, Karma Revero was named Green Car Journal’s 2018 “Luxury Green Car of the Year”. Competitors competing for this award include BMW 530e, Cadillac CT6 Plug- In, Lexus LS 500H and Porsche Panamera 4 E-Hybrid. The Revero has three drive modes: Sport, Stealth (pure EV), and Sustain (gasoline generator). Depending on the mode, it takes between 5.4 seconds to 7.3 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 100 kilometers. Its fastest speed in Sport mode is 125 miles or 200 kilometers per hour, which isn’t as fast as a sports car, nor does it matches up to those in its class, like Tesla. The Revero features a new infotainment system with a 10.2-inch touch screen display. The system is more fluent, more responsive, and supports Apple CarPlay. Moreover, it is equipped with a two-zone automatic climate control system, brakes by the famous Italian company Brembo, 240 volt Level 2 AC and CCS DC charging functions, rear view camera, front and rear parking assist systems. Like its predecessor, the Revero has been closely followed by many since its rebirth. At the same time, it faces many criticisms from the automotive industry and the media. Not only is its performance being compared to its rivals, its positioning in the car world is also under fire. Karma Automative branded Revero to be an ultra-luxury vehicle, produced in small quantities and owned by few people like Rolls-Royce or Bentley. Yet Jay Leno, an American car collector and famous talk show host, jokes after seeing the Revero at a recent event in Beverly Hills that “It’s just a Volt in a tuxedo, isn’t it?” The young international students asked me over WeChat about my experience test driving the Revero. I replied him: This is a novel and trendy car that is very eco friendly. If you are an eco-friendly person, who wants to become the focus of the road and do not mind sacrificing some excitement of driving, then the Revero is your choice. n

A Carnival of Generosity
t takes an exceptional vehicle to be feted in the spectacular style the redesigned Bentley Continental GT was in early May by Dilawri Group of Companies.
Brad Laviolette, Regional Marketing Manager of Dilawri, and Bentley Vancouver cordially invited special guests and media to attend a private evening to unveil the highly anticipated redesign of the third generation Continental GT. The Aurora Jet Hangar at YVR International Airport was the location, and the luxury car line-up for valet was over a block long. Before the reveal guests were invited to recline in the
sky-blue Bentley Mulsanne, take selfies in the Aurora Jet Partners private jet, dance along with Narai Dawn and TheStarCaptains, and visit lounges provided by Major Interiors’ Bentley Home, Montecristo Jewellers, and Gastown’s Secret Location. The evening’s smiles were captured by the elegant lens of Denis Grocer of The Collective You and many roving photographers. B O U L E VA R D

EVEN TS
Amidst the socializing, a troupe of Latin dancers emerged and drew all eyes and attention to the Continental GT as the cover was removed and the sleek new design revealed amid applause. The new silhouette is more aggressive thanks to a longer and lower stance, new frontend design with Matrix LED headlights, and a reworked Bentley 6.0-liter twinturbocharged W12 engine which will produce 626 horsepower and 644 poundfeet of torque. Now, this is a beautiful beast Bentley lovers can get excited about! n

C
lients of the Dilawri Group of Companies are known for their love of impressive fast cars, living the best lives, and their generosity when it comes to great causes. At the 2nd annual Ride & Drive Gala, members of this prestigious group gathered to raise funds and support the work of the BC Cancer Foundation’s leading cancer clinicians, scientists, and researchers whose work which leads to discoveries and improved patient outcomes. Local personality Fiona Forbes MC’ed the evening introducing guest speakers Lindsay Carswell, Director of The Ride to Conquer Cancer, and oncologist Dr. Bernie Eigl. As the Provincial Medical Director, Clinical Trials, Medical Oncologist at BC Cancer, Eigl knows a thing or two about cancer and the exorbitant costs associated with finding a cure. “The money raised for the BC Cancer Foundation, by organizations like Dilawri, goes towards improving the lives of those touched by cancer throughout BC,” said Dr. Bernie Eigl. “The Ride & Drive Gala is an easy and fun way to support such a necessary organization.” Presented by Wheaton Precious Metals, the grueling twoday event will see teams cycle 200-kilometre’s through the beautiful Fraser Valley, with the starting gun in Cloverdale and the welcoming finish line in Hope. For those unable to ride, a Virtual Rider option is available, while others chose to be involved with in-kind donations of products and services.
EVEN TS
In addition to hosting this amazing annual event, Brad Laviolette, Regional Marketing Manager of Dilawri Group of Companies, says the company is “proud to once again be the official National Support Vehicle Partner of the Ride to Conquer Cancer across Canada.” Attendees swayed to the Max Zirpursky band and were taken-in by contemporary artist Yared Nigussu who created incredible art using his unique hands-on technique. In between speeches, guests enjoyed canapés, fish and pork tacos, sidled up to the popular grazing station topped with the freshest local fare, and Design to Dine hand-crafted tangy gin cocktails from their extensive repertoire. n
W
hether given as charity, philanthropy, or as spare change, the practice of donating money to those less fortunate has been around since 2500 BCE. Ancient Hebrews used a mandatory tax to benefit the poor and the word ‘philanthropy’ first appeared in an Ancient Greek drama ‘Prometheus Bound’ by Aeschylus in 500 BCE. 1180 CE saw Moses Maimonides authoring the ‘Mishneh Torah’ which included the Eight Levels of Charity.
A donation by any other name is just as sweet. Fast forward to 1727 CE where the Sisters of Charity provided social assistance to the needy in Latin America and on to 2018 where ‘The Giving Pledge’ membership includes the wealthiest individuals and families in America who commit to giving the majority of their wealth to philanthropy. Since the beginning of recorded time, those with means have been performing acts of charitable giving, and while the west coast may appear to have more than its fair share of luxury supercars, pricy penthouses, and bottomless Champagne flutes, it is also home those who give, and give generously, to many deserving causes. n

Beijing's Origo Club Opens in Richmond Written by

Owners of Beijing’s members-only private club brings a fine dining hybrid to Richmond
ichmond’s incredible culinary scene, while vast in Asian flavours, lacks European options – until now. This summer, Origo Club opened in Richmond’s Oval Village on the north-west stretch of River Road by the Olympic Oval. The first North American offshoot of a members-only private club in China (of the same name), Richmond’s Origo moves away from the lifestyle focus of Beijing’s club to one that offers French-inspired food and wine as well as Asian art. The name, “Origo,” is derived from its Latin root meaning “origin” and underscores Origo’s single-source philosophy when it comes to food, wine, coffee, tea and art.
D IN I NG
By day, Origo operates as a polished café, offering espresso-based drinks ($3+) made with the state-of-theart Modbar brewing system as well as a selection of pourover coffees and fine teas. Light bites include freshly baked pastries ($3+), while lunch fare ranges from croquemadames ($15) to a “Lyonnaise” salad with kale, smoked oyster mushrooms and fresh cheese ($9). The far end of the space is where you’ll find the art gallery, currently exhibiting over 400 pieces of contemporary Asian porcelain and textile arts, many of which are for sale. By night, the space truly shines as it transitions into its
culinary strengths. Managing Partner, Woody Wu, has assembled an impressive team in the kitchen that includes Head Chef David Pan (Bishop’s) and Sous Chef Tony Hua (Toronto’s Cava). Wu, a highly respected oenophile and wine consultant, has created a well-edited list of wines, whiskies and sakés from around the world that he’s excited to share with diners. However, Wu’s true passion lies in French wines and over dinner, he revealed he recently attended the prestigious Hospices de Beaune wine auction in Burgundy (organized by Christie’s) where four barrels were purchased. remain in France, where they’ll continue maturing and in 2019 Wu anticipates releasing approximately 800 bottles under an Origo house label. Until then, diners can still enjoy a beautiful selection of French wines, many available by the glass ($14+). Naturally, the wine program was designed to complement the menu, which is French-inspired itself. Options are sure to please palates searching for traditional French flavours such as boeuf tartare served with housemade chips ($18), duck magret balanced beautifully with seabuckthorn jus ($18) and goat cheese tortellini finished with fragrant truffles ($28+). â–

n the concrete terrace outside of D6 Cafe, art history was made as tarps were removed from two sculptures, exposing their reflective brilliance. The unveiling of Love Me and Tear by renowned contemporary British sculptor Richard Hudson, marked his first foray into Canada. Hudson started his art career quite late. Originally from a farming family, Hudson travelled many roads before reaching Spain. He played in a rock band, did some acting, and in the late 1980s worked his way into property development and design in London. While he found it exciting, it did not satisfy his internal craving. So he found himself at 42 years old, having just completed a “four- to five-year walk-about that ended in Mallorca” with the realization that he was a sculptor. The exhibit offered art enthusiasts an opportunity to observe Hudson’s modern surrealist adaptation of two images familiar to us all — the heart and a teardrop. What began as a conversation between Sotheby’s International Realty Canada and Ian MacDonald, art collector and owner of Okanaganbased Liquidity Wines, blossomed into a plan of action. MacDonald flew Hudson to the Napa Valley for a têteà-tête and over many bottles of wine, the two crafted the Vancouver exhibit.

To surpass the one year mark in the ever-changing hospitality industry can be considered something of an accomplishment. To celebrate thirty years is remarkable. And for a nightclub, it’s virtually unheard of.
S
uch is the case of Vancouver’s legendary Granville Street hotspot, The Roxy; known previously as The Venue.
“Before that it was called ‘Jack’s Hanging Tree’ which I didn’t think was a very good name to associate with,” says Founder & President Blaine Culling. “The fellows who took it over – who were my business partners in another venture – called it The Venue. They put it together and it had new bands, literally four or five times a week. They would all be the same kind of amateur bands and in my opinion they sounded terrible so I suggested getting a house band that knows how to play really good songs from artists like The Beatles and Rolling Stones that everybody likes. They said I was crazy and that nobody would want to listen to that stuff because everybody wants to hear the new stuff. After about six months they went broke and they told me if I thought my concept was such a good idea that I should take it over. So I did.” The year was 1988 and the Granville Strip had fallen on hard times. The Roxy was seemingly just what the old street needed.

Who could have predicted, that three decades later The Roxy would still be cashing in on its tried and true formula? “I honestly thought if it lasted a year that would be great,” recalls Culling. “I really had no idea that it would last longer than that. It just seemed to go on.
That was 1992. Sasha today is the legendary nightclub’s General Manager.
It’s like the ‘Energizer Bunny’ that keeps going and each year it’s successful if not more than the year before.” And it’s not just customers that have kept The Roxy vital through the years. There’s incredible brand loyalty among

Being Lovable and to be Loving
Can Be Tricky
A
ll the world’s a popularity contest thanks to the unprecedented rise of social media. Everyone is vying for the most likes, followers, and comments on their own brand. The ubiquitous “brandividual” is creating an urgent sense of need for validity through imaginary friends and fake relationships. Social media idolization has turned into a lucrative business that can be monetized into a dream lifestyle. It is hard to wade through the marketing muck to find the authentic people who are making a difference or are legitimately worth connecting with. If you are your own brand then who you reach, and who you influence will depend on your tactics. Posting provocative pictures on your account will certainly bring in a flood of followers but is this the audience you desire? How does one truly become loved or lovable when the world is promoting narcissism and selfaggrandizement? A popular and funny meme gives an accurate prediction; “Imagine they delete Instagram and BOOM!!! You’re not a model anymore.” Being lovable, and to be loving, can be tricky for those characters when wealth, elitism, and perceived popularity tend to create a more “followable” person. Can a person with a larger than life existence relate to the masses or do the masses simply long to get a glimpse of the elite lifestyle? It does seem hard to discern if the reality is that the more unreachable you become the more attractive you are to the rest of the world. Popular reality shows featuring the rich and the privileged class come and go but the fascination remains. Popular but lonely is not a new phenomenon and lately we are hearing about this more and more with tragic consequences. Staying connected, really connected, is probably a better strategy for life and love rather than posting a picture and waiting to see how popular you are in cyberspace. ■ Leeta Liepins OurCityTonightLeeta@gmail.com
