Footbal History The contemporary history of the world's favorite game spans more than 100 years. It all began in 1863 in England, when rugby football and association football branched off on their different courses and the Football Association in England was formed - becoming the sport's first governing body. Both codes stemmed from a common root and both have a long and intricately branched ancestral tree. A search down the centuries reveals at least half a dozen different games, varying to different degrees, and to which the historical development of football has been traced back. Whether this can be justified in some instances is disputable. Nevertheless, the fact remains that people have enjoyed kicking a ball about for thousands of years and there is absolutely no reason to consider it an aberration of the more 'natural' form of playing a ball with the hands. On the contrary, apart from the need to employ the legs and feet in tough tussles for the ball, often without any laws for protection, it was recognized right at the outset that the art of controlling the ball with the feet was not easy and, as such, required no small measure of skill. The very earliest form of the game for which there is scientific evidence was an exercise from a military manual dating back to the second and third centuries BC in China. http://www.fifa.com/classicfootball/history/game/historygame1.html

The King Pelé Pele (born 1940), called "the Black Pearl," was the greatest soccer player in the history of the game. With a career total of 1,280 games, he may have been the world's most popular athlete. Edson Arantes Do Nascimento Pele, who took the name Pele, was born October 23, 1940, in Três Corações, Brazil, the son of a soccer player. His father's coaching paid off, for when he was 11 he played for his first soccer team, that of the town of Bauru, Brazil. He moved up in competition with outstanding play, and when he was 15 he was playing for the team from the village of Santos. He soon received broader exposure when he was loaned to the Vasco da Gama team in Rio de Janeiro. In 1958 he went to Stockholm, Sweden to compete in the World Cup championship. His play there helped his country win its first title. He returned to Santos, and his team went on to win six Brazilian titles. In 1962 he again played on the World Cup team, but an injury forced him to sit out the contest. Soccer is a low scoring game, but on November 19, 1969, before a crowd of 100,000 in Rio de Janeiro, Pele scored his 1,000th goal. He was not only a high scorer, but a master of ball handling as well. It seemed that the ball was somehow attached to his feet as he moved down the field. http://www.bookrags.com/biography/pele/ 1. Martha: I hope you're right. Listen, I'm going to have a party this Saturday. Would you like to come? Jane: Oh, I'd love to come. Thank you for inviting me. Who's going to come to the party?

http://esl.about.com/od/grammarlessons/a/l_future1.htm

Working in pairs or groups of three people, make your own dialog using will and going to, can be anything you want

78

Going to is used when you have decided to do something, or you intend to do it:  A: Are you going to watch the late movie on TV tonight? B: No, I’m going to have an early night.  A: I hear Sarah has won some money. What is she going to do with it? B: She’s going to buy a new car.

You can also say something that is going to happen in the future, for example: The man can’t see the wall in front of him. He is going to walk into the wall. When we say that ‘something is going to happen’, the situation now makes this clear. The man is walking towards the wall now, so we can see that he is going to walk into it.

Will future expresses a spontaneous decision, an assumption with regard to the future or an action in the future that cannot be influenced.

Use of will Future  a spontaneous decision

example: Wait, I will help you.  an opinion, hope, uncertainty or assumption regarding the future

example: He will probably come back tomorrow.  a promise

Maracanã,

the

largest

stadium in the world The history of Maracanã is, initially, the history of the World cup of 1950. Indeed, the competition, started again by Jules Rimet in 1946 after a total stop of the activities of FIFA during the second World war, was organized that year in Brazil, the only applicant country to the event, in a bloodthirsty world. In that occasion, the Brazilian State decided to construct a gigantic stadium, imagined by the architects Raphaël Galvão and Pedro Paulo Bernardes Bastos, the world’s largest stadium, and for a long time, considered capable to accomodate 200.000 people. Actually, the exact maximum capacity is unknown. Brazil asserts to be more than 200.000, the Guinness Book allots 180.000 of them, others quote approximately 155.000. The first stone of the stadium was placed on August 2, 1948, when Maracanã stadium was born.

Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian art form that combines elements of martial arts, music, and dance. It was created in Brazil by slaves from Africa by mixing the many fighting styles from many of their tribes, sometime after the sixteenth century. It was developed in the region of Quilombo dos Palmares, located in the Brazilian state of Alagoas, which was the state of Pernambuco before dismemberment, and has had great influence on Afro-Brazilian generations, with strong presence in the states of Bahia, Pernambuco, Rio de Janeiro and S達o Paulo. The sparring is marked by fluid acrobatic play, feints, takedowns, and with extensive use of leg sweeps, kicks, and headbutts. Less frequently used techniques include elbow strikes, slaps, punches, and body throws. Its origins and purpose are a matter of debate, with theories ranging from views of Capoeira as a uniquely Brazilian folk dance with improvised fighting movements to claims that it is a battle-ready fighting form directly descended from ancient African techniques. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capoeira
