What are GREETINGS for you? Do you know anything about it? Write what you think they are and then discuss with your classmates. After the discussion, listen to the link and check if you were right or wrong: http://www.languageguide.org/txt/common/eng/
Meeting the Historical cities Warm up: Minas Gerais is the state which has the biggest number of historical cities in Brazil.
Do you know what a historical city is? Explain Do you know any historical cities? Which? Which ones would you like to know?
If you don‟t know any, we will introduce you two: SABARA
Sabara is a historical city 25 km away from Belo Horizonte, the state Capital. It is an old city and has lots of churches and museums from the „Golden Age‟ (time when Portugal explored gold and diamond from cities all over the state).Today Sabará has an important place in the “Estrada Real” project (reconstitution of the way people used to come from Rio de Janeiro to the cities in Minas to get gold and bring them food and other things). Curiosity: The entire name of the city is Sabarabuçu, word from tupi- guarani, an Indian language and it means big bright mountain. http://www.sabara.mg.gov.br/web/index.php?option=com_content&view=category&layout=blog&id=36&Itemid=69(adapted)
Follow up:
Put true or false to the following sentences about the text: _____ Sabará is far from Belo Horizonte. _____ The city has lots of churches and museums. _____Sabará is a new city _____Sabará doesn‟t belong to Estrada Real _____The city name comes from an Indian language.
GRAMMAR: Simple present:
The Simple Present is frequently used in English. It is also called Present Simple. Have a look at the following examples: 1) Repeated actions (every day, always, often, sometimes or never) My friend often travels to Sabará I never go there on week days.
2) Things in general The sun rises in the East.
3) Fixed arrangements, scheduled events (e.g. timetable)
My uncle goes from Sabará to Belo Horizonte every day. 4) Actions in the present - one follows after the other (first - then, after that) First I get up, then I have breakfast. 5) Instructions Go to the old church and met me there. 6) After special verbs, which are normally not used with the Present Progressive (These verbs express states, possessions, feelings etc.) be, believe, belong, hate, hear, like, love, mean, prefer, remain, realize, see, seem, smell, think, understand, want, wish I understand Portuguese. He doesn't like beans. http://www.englisch-hilfen.de/en/exercises_list/zeitformen.htm
Watch out!!!
In the affirmative, when the subjects are : he, she or it, we put „s‟ after the verb. Ex.: it means big bright mountain. In the negative and interrogative we use auxiliaries to help us. They are do and does. We use does for he, she and it and do for I , we you and they. Ex.: Do you know Sabará? She doesn’t know any historical cities.
Exercises: 1) Fill in the verbs in brackets into the gaps. Example: He never writes a letter.
She ___________________ to lose weight. (to try) My aunt often _____________________on the streets. (to jump)
2) Ask for the underlined part. Example: Lydia lives in Bulgaria. - Where does Lydia live? Pamela does not like soccer.________________________________________________ He works 60 hours a week.________________________________________________ 3) Rewrite the sentences and use short forms or long forms. Example: He doesn't work in the garden. - He does not work in the garden. They are in the museum. _________________________________________ He isn't from Minas Gerais._________________________________________
4) Which answers are correct? a) Which actions are typical for the Simple Present? _____action started in the past and continues up to the present _____action took place in the past _____future meaning: timetables, programmes _____one action follows another _____something happens repeatedly _____something is happening at the same time of speaking _____things in general
b) Which verb forms are correct? _______she agrees _______she annoys _______she cries _______she hurrys _______she kissis _______she rushes _______she teachs _______she worrys
5) Negate the sentences. Example: He works on the computer. - He does not work on the computer. The banks close at 2 o'clock.___________________________________________ Jane and Sue teach Spanish.___________________________________________
Are you curious? More information: Jaboticaba is a Brazilian typical fruit. There are lots of Jaboticaba trees in Sabará. That‟s why they have The Jaboticaba Festival: a festival in which people can meet and buy Jaboticaba and many other things made with it, such as liquors ,ice cream, jam and others. The Festival takes place in the city Sports Center in two days. This year it happens in November 15th and 16th from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Biography Francisca da Silva de Oliveira was born in Serro, in the center of nowadays Brazilian state Minas Gerais, and lived mainly in Diamantina. She was the daughter of a
Portuguese man, Antônio Caetano de Sá, with his black slave, Maria da Costa, probably from the Gulf of Guinea or Bahia. Her first master was the Sergeant Manuel Pires Sardinha, with whom she had two sons: Plácido Pires Sardinha and Simão Pires Sardinha, both studied at the University of Coimbra, in Portugal. Her second master was Priest Rolim (José da Silva Oliveira), who was forced to sell Chica to João Fernandes de Oliveira, a diamond mine owner and mining Governor of Arraial to Tijuco, one of the richest persons of Colonial Brazil. Francisca and João soon started a romance and she was freed by him. Even though they were not officially married, the couple lived together for several years and had 13 children: Francisca de Paula (1755); João Fernandes (1756); Rita (1757); Joaquim (1759); Antonio Caetano (1761); Ana (1762); Helena (1763); Luiza (1764); Antônia (1765); Maria (1766); Quitéria Rita (1767); Mariana (1769); José Agostinho Fernandes (1770). In 1770, João Fernandes had to return to Portugal and took along with him the 4 sons he had with Chica, who received noble titles of the Portuguese Court. Their daughters remained with Chica in Brazil and were sent to the Convent of Macaúbas, one of the best ones at that time. Even after the departure of João, Chica remained with her prestige. She was a member of the São Francisco do Carmo Brotherhood (exclusive to white people), Mercês Brotherhood (exclusive to mulattoes) and of Rosário Brotherhood (exclusive to Africans). Chica da Silva died in 1796. She was buried at the Church of São Francisco de Assis, a privilege reserved only for white rich people.

Hillary: Thank you Pedro! Pedro: You „re welcome! When we want to say how often something happens, it is common to use frequency adverbs.
