SUMMER MUSIC FESTIVALS Suffolk is gearing up for a wonderful summer of music so let’s hope the weather plays along too! 31 MAY-2 JUNE
Suffolk Open Studios celebrates the county’s thriving artistic community with participating artists opening their studios to the public at weekends, giving visitors a unique opportunity to take a look “behind the scenes” and see them in action. For 2018, the programme runs over the first four weekends of June, commencing Saturday 2 June. Over 100 artists and galleries are taking part, showing work across a wide range of media covering every aspect of art today, including painting, ceramics, glassware, pottery, sculpture and more.
Suffolk Open Studios Chairperson Cally James commented: “This year’s programme promises to be one of the most exciting yet. We’re expanding and diversifying the Open Studios concept but keeping the intimacy that visitors like, of being able to see and ask about artists’ work within their own studios.” Visitors can learn about participating artists, see examples of their work, check opening times and plan their route by visiting the Suffolk Open Studios website. A map shows the location of all participating artists and galleries.
RED ROOSTER at Euston Hall Now entering its fourth year, Red Rooster champions the best in R ‘n’ B, Americana, blues, soul, roots and country. Friday’s headliner is Pokey LaFarge from Missouri and Eli Paperboy Reed and his 10-piece High and Mighty Brass Band! will headline Saturday night.

for winning the Customer Focus Award at this years Suffolk Coastal Business & Community Awards. “Outstanding. Fabulous. Responsive. Honest. Excellent.” Five words used by customers in reviews to describe and reflect the five-star service they receive from Archway Carpets. The culture of putting the customer first starts at first contact. Darrell and Graham are always there with a smile, and nothing is too much trouble. Two of the Facebook reviews actually comment on the fact that Darrell has advised NOT to purchase new flooring and that a clean will give the customer the result they want. Not many businesses would be so honest and genuine with their advice and customer care approach!

Ipswich town centre could have less cigarette butts dropped on the streets thanks to the installation of new ballot bins by Ipswich Central. The bins, produced by environmental charity Hubbub, provide a fun ashtray by encouraging smokers to answer a particular question by popping their butt into one of the two slots under the fun, or provocative, poll. “We walked around the town centre to look for five key areas
with a high drop-rate of butts, and purchased bins for these locations. We know that these bins have been associated with a 46% drop in litter in other locations and hope to see the same in Ipswich” said Sophie Alexander, Ipswich BID Manager. The bins are part of Ipswich Central’s #itsmystreet business clean-up, where businesses come together to help Ipswich Borough Council to keep the town centre clean and tidy for residents, shoppers and visitors.
12 MAY - 2 JUNE TALK THE WALK The 2018 Suffolk Walking Festival, with over 120 walks and events, promises to be their biggest and most ambitious festival to date. There are walks for everyone: you can kick start your day with a Dawn Chorus Walk, try Nordic Walking, discover the amazing history of Suffolk’s Wool Towns and have a go at GeoCaching. There are short strolls to long hikes and everything in between. This years festival launches at St Peter’s Brewery on Saturday May 12th. before dismissing something gorgeous. It’s the same with shape. This season is embracing fitted, loose, cropped, skinny, mid calf, long and short silhouettes, so instead of going directly to your obvious choice, have a play, try something new! You may return to your comfort zone, but you might just discover a new you. Dressing is all about feeling good about yourself, complimenting your assets and disguising the other bits! Then there are feet and bags to consider, a new handbag in a fabulous metallic pink can turn the most neutral outfit into something special. And luckily, shoes and sandals just have to be replaced regularly as sadly they wear out, so hoorah for that, no permission or debate required, just something gorgeous to look down at and make you smile. Now is the time to get out your old summer things and see what’s what. Adding some new season colour and shape is the perfect way to embrace the season ahead, and after the beast from the east, bring on a glorious British Spring Summer. n Karen from Fanny and Frank, Woodbridge and Saffron Walden.

If you’re looking for something a bit edgier than you’d normally find on the high street, Scotch & Soda ticks all the boxes. Designed from a canal-side former church in Amsterdam, the under-the-radar brand combines French style with tougher urban elements. We first discovered Scotch & Soda by chance on a visit to Amsterdam and decided we had to bring it back with us. It had the quality we always look for but it’s like no other (which means you won’t see everyone else wearing it!). Each piece in the collection features clever design details that spark interest, usually borrowed from tried and tested vintage styles – think unexpected meshing, a combination of clashing eras and intricate embroidery. This season is no different and we love the star embroidered jeans and ombre t-shirt. Our women’s range of Scotch & Soda is a brand our customers love being introduced to and, Boyfriend for the first time, we’ll also jeans be stocking Scotch & Soda’s £129.95 menswear collection in-store and online too.

Each item adds a bit of magic to your wardrobe and is something that will get compliments each time you wear it. LET’S START wearing some colour.
This winter has really dragged on and frankly I have had enough of it. Let’s drift into some soft greys, a touch of green and even some dusky pink. Not quite ready for marigold yellow but some orange can be nice. Start with adding a colourful scarf and work your way up to a top. It’s been hard to even take a layer off and I am definitely not taking my vest off yet! We have got a few dresses out from POMODORO and FENELLA, suitable for a posh event or a day out. Casuals from POSTCARD FROM BRIGHTON have gone really well and have ordered a new collection which is pink and green, due in May. We have Lots of pastel bags and some really wacky statement jewellery. So ladies! Kick out the dreary and embrace the spring with colour. LYNN TURNER

REPORT
LEATHER OF YOUR DREAMS
T
HE FIRST THING you notice when you walk into The Tannery is the gorgeous smell of new leather. It’s the aroma of quality and the finest leather goods sourced from artisan workshops around Europe, hand crafted using traditional methods. In 2006, owner Lindsay Furniss opened her first shop in Holt after her husband complained he couldn’t find a decent leather briefcase locally. “We spend a lot of time in Italy and we were always blown away by the wonderful leather goods they have, so my husband suggested I open a shop back here.” It proved to be a brilliant plan. Since then Lindsay has opened three more outlets; another in Holt, one in Norwich’s Exchange Street and the most recent in Woodbridge. The shops stock a superb collection of hand stitched handbags, briefcases, luggage, belts, shoes, gloves, scarves and homewares, and gifts such as key rings and jewellery boxes. Brands include The Bridge, Texier, Mywalit, Bellroy, Crockett & Jones, Millican, Tusting, Brics and The Tannery’s own brand of leather bags, shoes and accessories. So what is the secret of The Tannery’s success? “The key to everything we do is quality,” says Lindsay. “We work very closely with a number of family-run leather workshops, mainly in Italy, but also in Germany, France and Spain, who make the products we stock. “Our relationship with them
26
The Tannery’s leather goods are handmade using traditional techniques
is very important, because they enable us to choose styles, colours and finishes to develop our own range of unique, bespoke items that we know our customers will love. It’s very much a creative partnership, and nothing we sell is mass produced. “The workmanship and skill of the leather workers is incredible. Many products we stock are hand finished, using traditional techniques, and it’s this quality and attention to detail that makes them so special – and hardwearing too. “The focus is always on our customers, listening to what they want and pricing our goods fairly so that the best leather is affordable for everyone. No two customers are the same, some want a handbag or a bag with a
shoulder strap, others will only buy a cross body, others want a backpack style. So I am always looking ahead and ensuring that there is something for everyone.” Does Lindsay have any predictions about what colours will be in this year for handbags? “Classic, natural leather colours will always be popular, but for the Summer many customers will like a splash of colour such as yellow or orange, and for the Autumn I saw some lovely burgundy and forest green in Milan.” ■ The Tannery really is a onestop shop for the leather of your dreams. It also runs a loyalty scheme for its customers: spend £50 and get 10% off your next purchase. For more details visit www.tannery.co.uk

“Neither of us was certain of the legal implications of ending our marriage, but Barker Gotelee guided us towards a positive resolution with expertise and compassion.”
Divorce on the grounds of same-sex infidelity HOW IT WAS SOLVED: MY PROBLEM: I had been with my wife, Jan, since we met at work in 2002. We enjoyed many happy years together, travelling the world and building up our respective careers – and finally tied the knot in 2015. In the last year, however, things weren’t that great between us – I was away a lot, and Jan spent a lot of time with a friend, Clare. I then discovered that they had become emotionally and physically involved. I was devastated and had no idea what to do next. KATIE, FELIXSTOWE
30
When the law changed to allow same-sex couples to get married in 2014, I was delighted; I had always been keen to tie the knot and cement our status as a couple. Jan wasn’t that bothered, saying we didn’t need a piece of paper to prove our love for one another. She went along with it, however, and we had a beautiful ceremony. After that things went downhill. I was travelling a lot for my job and Jan admitted she’d been lonely. She was constantly messaging a lady called Clare and I had a Vanilla April/May 2018
REAL LIVES
feeling something wasn’t right. Jan confirmed my suspicions that Christmas, saying she was emotionally, and physically, involved with Clare. Of course, I was distraught and my first reaction was to see if we could work it out. Having spent Christmas doing a lot of talking and crying, however, it became clear that Jan and I had become so far apart emotionally, staying together was not an option. Once reality hit, my survival instinct kicked in and I became determined to take charge by initiating a divorce, but I was uncertain as to what this would involve legally. I thought that the grounds for divorce as a same-sex couple were somehow different to those of a heterosexual couple, although I couldn’t be sure. Based on a friend’s positive recommendation, I gave Barker Gotelee a call.
T
HIS WAS MY first time in a solicitor’s office and, I admit, I was slightly apprehensive. I really needn’t have worried – Amanda from the Family Team was not at all judgemental and clearly very experienced. Over a coffee, she reassured me that getting divorced would be a straightforward process and almost exactly the same as for a heterosexual couple. The division of assets, for example: Jan and I had put similar money into our properties and had built up decent pensions, so the division of our income and capital would be
split almost exactly. We earn around the same and have no children so there was no maintenance to work out. In fact, the only difference came down to the grounds for divorce. Simply, because the law doesn’t count infidelity with someone of the same sex as grounds for adultery, I couldn’t use that as the cause. I was relieved to learn that the affair would be classed as ‘unreasonable behaviour’, however, so this nuance in the law would not hold up the divorce proceedings. Amanda explained that the process is the same regardless of whether we were in a Civil
Partnership, or had married, as was our case.
O
VER THE NEXT few months, Amanda guided me through the divorce process as well as helping me to negotiate a financial settlement with Jan. Neither of us was certain of the legal implications of ending our marriage, but Barker Gotelee guided us towards a positive resolution with expertise and compassion. Some months later, the emotions are still raw and I’m sad when I think about the life Jan and I had together, but now I feel confident about putting all of that behind me and starting anew. n

VIOLET GOULD
From Suffolk school girl to international model, Violet Gould, has graced magazine covers worldwide and is currently the face of Toni & Guy’s global campaign. How did your modelling career start? Having moved from Suffolk to London to study Geography at Royal Holloway University, I was given the opportunity to work for Toni & Guy as a demonstration model. Doing the odd job for them ultimately gave me the confidence to contact Sam at JMM, who knew my mother. She showed me the ropes and then introduced me to The Hive in London in October 2016 and I’ve been modelling ever since. It’s come full circle now, as I recently landed the Toni & Guy campaign.
PHOTOGRAPHY: PAULA KNORR/OLIVIER YOAN/ ALEX HUTCHINSON
How easy is it to learn to be a model? Confidence is key! I remember my first ever paid job was a terrifying experience. Thankfully, having shot with JMM several times before, I understood that I had to be myself and try to convey emotions in a believable and realistic way, without them seeming forced. Practice does make perfect. As long as you allow yourself time to grow and seek support from your industry peers, then your skills develop organically. What have been your career highlights so far? Modelling can be highly lucrative
32
at times, but interestingly enough my stand out jobs, are those which are more experiential. Hands down the highlight of modelling career so far, has a trip to Jaipur, India with Fabulous magazine. I can now say, I’ve had the pleasure of working alongside elephants in some of the most gorgeous locations imaginable. Most people think it’s a glamorous job. What’s the reality? Modelling is glamorous … from the outside! I’ve worked for Elle, Vogue, Marie Claire; worn amazing designer outfits, had my hair and make-up done, travelled far and wide, met all sorts of interesting, creative people and I get paid for it. However, regular 5am wake ups, 16 hour days and shooting on location in the freezing cold, wearing nothing more than a bikini can become quite exhausting. Sometimes, you can be so busy rushing around the city, from one casting to another – especially during fashion week – that when you finally do get home there’s no time or energy left to do anything other than eat and sleep. Saying that, it is all part and parcel of the job and the pros certainly outweigh the cons.
Vanilla April/May 2018
PEOPLE Is there anything you would change? I’d like to develop some sort of framework whereby models and other creative freelancers – some of whom can be very young – are protected from mistreatment. Unfortunately it does happen from time to time but at my first meeting with JMM, Sam warned me about the possible pitfalls and made sure I knew to call her (whatever the time), if I ever found myself feeling uncomfortable. Having a stable, supportive family and agent is very important. In light of recent events, I can sense that the industry is changing already and hope this idea will soon become a reality. What’s next? I have landed my first big international make up campaign, which I am totally thrilled about. I’ve also had preliminary discussions with JMM and The Hive about modelling under contract in China, which would be a dream come true.

Have you always lived in Suffolk? I grew up in Ipswich with my family. Went to Amberfield and then The Royal Hospital School. Having lived in London for three years, I'm now commuting from Portsmouth. What do you do when you come back home? I spend most of my time with my mum in Bury St Edmunds. The Abbeygate, an independent cinema, is one of my favourite places to go and shows great films. Violet Gould is managed by JMM worldwide www.jmmsuffolk.co.uk

In the short time since the brand was born, Emily’s pieces have received critical acclaim, including being listed with some of the industries greatest stockists and gathering the attention of stylish stars including Lottie Moss, Caroline Flack, Binky Felstead and Louisa Thompson to name but a few. The past year has been a landmark year for Emily with new collection launches, a busy show circuit and not to mention designing pieces to come. Emily says: “There’s nothing more magical than seeing my designs transformed from screen to a tangible piece. I am a complete perfectionist when it comes to jewellery. I like every element of a new piece to be visually stunning.” Emily Mortimer Jewellery offers stylish statement pieces to add a pop of colour to any look at affordable prices. I needed to be absolutely sure I could make a success of Emily Mortimer Jewellery before I made the leap. Having your own business isn’t just about being creative you have to have a good business head as well or you won’t succeed.” Emily is a proud Jewellery Design graduate with qualifications from the highly regarded Gemmological Association. Her pedigree also includes time spent as Head Designer at Kiki McDonough, a brand favoured by The Duchess of Cambridge amongst others. Despite the heady heights of her success, Emily remains firmly rooted in Suffolk, designing both her ready-to-wear collection and bespoke pieces from her Suffolk studio and splitting her time between her home town and the bright lights of London. BESSIE: ONE YEAR ON
2
017 was a good year for Bessie Turner. In January she decided to spend some money on recording a demo instead of going on holiday. It came as a surprise when she released the result, her debut single Big Sleep, to entirely unexpected acclaim; the song was viewed/streamed more than 10,000 times in the first 12 hours of her existence as a recording artist. With support from BBC Introducing and after performing a live session for BBC Introducing in Suffolk, Big Sleep started getting played on BBC Radio 1 and 6 Music throughout the spring, then six weeks into her career Bessie Turner was asked by BBC Introducing to appear at Latitude festival. On the back of growing excitement her second single Words You Say went further; after being premiered by Jo Wiley on BBC Radio 2, it found extensive airplay across the station as well as BBC 6 Music and BBC Radio 1. The year was topped off with live sessions at Maida Vale Studios for Jo Wiley and Steve Lamacq in the space of 6 weeks. By the start of 2018 Bessie Turner had emerged as one of the most exciting emerging artists in the country; amassing 100,000’s of streams on Spotify, able to
36
sell out shows in the UK and Europe. She had achieved it all with no backing whatsoever – all releases are done through her very own Don’t Try Records. Now Turner is poised to put out her first real body of work with debut EP 22:22. Recorded with George Perks (Dream Wife, Black Foxxes) at The Crypt Studios in London this is a body of work that showcases a whole breadth of styles and imagination from the 24 year old: The subtleties of dream sequence opener Casa, the Jazz infused swing of In My Room, to the alt-rock technicolor of Words You Say. It’s an ambitious record but also a highly personal one – the title alone is a tribute to her sister Ruby (Bessie is 2 years and 2 weeks younger than her sibling, who was born at 22:22). Turner uses her songs as a way of releasing fears and documenting moments. In Abseil, as she laments “I’m worried I’m not gonna live long, I’m worried I’m not gonna try my best to keep you…” it becomes apparent that these are both songs and confessions. It’s often the ability to juxtapose these melancholic sentiments with truly uplifting and fun compositions that makes 22:22 so utterly haunting and beautiful. n

ROM A YOUNG AGE, Jade MayJean had both the passion and enviable talent for singing. From the moment she could hold a tune, Jade hasn’t stopped performing and it is both her dedication and incredible, natural voice that mean she has propelled herself into a musical force to be reckoned with. After a number of years performing nationally as a solo performer and with her band, singing everything from dance tracks to 90s pop, at events, gigs, festivals and more, Jade longed to go back to her singer-songwriter roots and strip it all back. While continuing to gig all over the country, the last year has seen Jade MayJean return to the studio to write her beautiful debut album, 20SIXTY, with producer Kevin Duncan, set for release Spring 18. The influence of timeless icons, such as Amy Winehouse, Dusty Springfield and Paloma Faith, alongside her modern twist, result in startlingly honest lyrics which effortlessly collide and entwine with ridiculously catchy hooks. Jade has achieved exactly what she set out to do and the new album perfectly showcases her raw talent both vocally and as a songwriter. Now signed to GingerDog Records, who have recorded and produced the debut, Jade hopes to illustrate to the world exactly what she’s really made of. ‘One of the most highly talented artists I have the pleasure to work with – her amazing vocals capture the hearts of whoever hears them...’ Sophie Pol-Simon

HEN Sally Millsopp took part in Race for Life 2015, she had no idea if she would get to see her mum again. Sally’s mum, Jennifer Earnshaw, was desperately ill with mesothelioma - a form of lung cancer - and had little time left but she’d encouraged her daughter to take part in Race for Life as she knew the fundraising would help other patients. Sally, 53, went to the showground that day, with her daughter Eleanor, not knowing if her mum would be alive when they reached the finish line. Sally, who is a Practice Nurse at a GP

We’d raised around £450 in sponsorship and I knew she really wanted us to do Race for Life but it was very difficult to leave her that day. “When we reached the finish line, we both felt elated that we’d done something so positive at such a sad time. We went straight home and were so relieved to see her. She hadn’t been able to communicate verbally for a while but we showed her the pictures and I saw the reaction in her eyes. We felt really lifted by it. “Mum died the next day but she

Sue already owns the renowned Image beauty salon in Ipswich, which has won multiple local and national awards. But her new venture is something very different, and totally unique to the area. It’s called Glow Clinic, and it will offer the ultimate experience of gorgeous surroundings, a range of sophisticated aesthetic treatments, performed by clinical experts who are the very best in their field. “Glow Clinic is a very exciting concept that I have been working on for a while,” says Sue. “Beauty is my life and I’m always striving to improve so I can help my clients look and feel their best. “The new clinic will look very chic, modern and stylish. My husband Michael, and myself, had the vision for the project and have created a beautiful relaxing oasis where clients will feel their every need is taken care of. “My vision for Glow is very

different to Image salon; the same professionalism and superb service of course, but at Glow there will be five rooms offering innovative treatments, with practitioners who are all experts in a specific technique. We have invested in the most skilled and experienced staff to ensure our clients receive the best possible care. “There will be a doctor to administer facial injectables and fillers, a laser technician for hair removal, two facial experts, and I will be focusing on microblading, a semi-permanent makeup procedure for eyebrows. I will continue to work at Image as well, so my clients needn’t worry that I am leaving them.” Sue is one of the most experienced microbladers in the UK and has trained in Dubai, Belgrade and Phoenix. “I always wanted to be the best, and I’m continually training and learning to ensure I’m at the forefront of what I do and maintain my high standards and qualifications. “Microblading is highly skilled, and works by depositing pigment under the top layer of the skin with a unique pen. It’s all done
by hand and the microblading technique involves drawing individual, crisp hair strokes that are designed to look very natural. You need to be an artist, a technician and a therapist to get the best results. Glow is focused on that one hundred percent.”

UE is also searching for a qualified nutritionist to join the Glow team. “Eating healthily is a vital part of how we look and feel; making the most of how we look starts with good nutrition, what we put into our body, and it’s often overlooked as part of a beauty routine.” The experience at Glow Clinic will be cutting edge and something very special. “I am ambitious to bring all the most exciting techniques to this area,” says Sue, “and it’s wonderful to be able to share that with my clients.” n
Glow Clinic is set to open this April at 2 Great Colman Street, Ipswich IP1 2AD. t: 01473 221312 e: info@glowclinics.co.uk www.glowclinics.co.uk

WHAT’S NEW?

REPOiRlla TS
in FACIAL treatments Thanks to revolutionary developments over the past decade, we’re living in a golden age for anti-ageing skincare. Today we can improve our looks without suffering or breaking the bank. But how do you know which treatments actually work – or how much they hurt? Here’s just a few of those being talked about… THE OXYGEN FACE WORKOUT
Treatment: This facial takes less than half an hour. First, the skin is blasted with a gun-type contraption – officially called a Cool Lifting Gun – which emits frozen carbon dioxide, better known as dry ice. The freezing, -20°C temperature causes the blood vessels to contract and then dilate, which improves the oxygen and nutrient supply to the skin’s surface, making it appear more radiant. The carbon dioxide is also mixed with hyaluronic acid – a hydrating substance that can hold up to 1,000 times its own weight in water and is brilliant for plumping skin. The high pressure of the gun means the hyaluronic acid molecules penetrate deep into April/May 2018 Vanilla
the epidermis (the top layer of skin). The rest of the treatment is facial massage, which helps to ease puffiness, sculpt facial contours, boost circulation and ease tension from muscles. What they say: “I’m impressed by how much better I look after this super-speedy treatment. It was worth the chilly start.” DERMAPLANING
Treatment: The idea of having your skin shaved, free-hand, with a sharp blade may not sound like your idea of fun – but Dermaplaning, to give it its proper name, is actually an advanced form of facial exfoliation. What it involves: Performed
by a skin specialist using an ultra-fine scalpel, careful shaving dispatches the outermost layers of dead, polluted cells that make the face look dull, and leaves the skin more receptive to moisturisers. Dermaplaning also removes the fine hairs on the face known as ‘peach fuzz’. What they say: “After the initial anxiety has subsided, it proves to be a very gentle and relaxing treatment. With all its tiny hairs shaved off, my skin feels as smooth as porcelain and looks miles younger because it reflects the light so evenly. I am glowing. My make-up glides on. A perfect treatment to have in preparation for the holiday season.

FACIAL STEM CELL REJUVENATION
Treatment: Not for the squeamish, this process harvests fat from somewhere on your body where you have an abundance of it and injects it back into your face. The idea is to restore lost volume and reduce wrinkles by adding rejuvenating stem cells, which stimulate the skin’s ability to repair itself. So first your spare fat is sent off to have the stem cells extracted. How it feels: The fat harvesting is almost like a mini-liposuction and the reinsertion of the stem cells, using a derma-roller that creates hundreds of little holes in the skin will be uncomfortable. Expect to need some recovery downtime, too. For two days afterwards you look like you’ve gone a couple of rounds with Frank Bruno. What they say: “Incredible. It’s absolutely worth it. About two weeks later my skin looks moist, healthy, clear and, above all, young. And what’s amazing is that the treatment keeps on improving for weeks as the new stem cells work their magic.”
Dermasweep
52
Mesotherapy
DERMASWEEP
Treatment: This is a microresurfacing technique – new generation microdermabrasion, if you will – that has the added benefit of being combined with topical treatments to address specific skin issues. What it involves: The treatment uses a machine rather like a vacuum cleaner that has a number of different treatment tips to exfoliate or deliver serums. How it feels: After cleaning and drying the skin, the first stage is an exfoliation using a combination of the vacuum and a bristle tip, which is passed methodically in lines across the whole face. The second stage involves infusing ‘actives’ into the newly cleaned skin. What they say: “My skin certainly looked brighter afterwards, with a glow that lasted for a few days. It would be a great pre-party treatment because there’s no downtime – my face was just a little pink afterwards. For best results, they recommend four to six treatments spaced ten to 14 days apart.”
MESOTHERAPY
Treatment: Mesotherapy uses a mechanised injection gun to introduce a cocktail of moisturising hyaluronic acid and skin-boosting vitamins into the face. How it feels: Not half as painful as you might think. The U225 meso gun knocks a 3mm needle repeatedly into the skin. Each of these little wounds will stimulate the production of collagen and elastin deep in the skin. They work steadily around the face injecting the serum cocktail, then turn up the speed of the needles. After that, you luxuriate under the peaceful red LED light to calm down your traumatised skin. What they say: “I was warned that I would look as if I had been stung by a swarm of bees but I only look a bit freckly and sunburned, and even that subsides by the end of the day. What I really notice is how amazingly plumped up my skin is, with a whole 5ml teaspoonful of magic cocktail now trapped between the upper and lower layers. The next day, I look great.” Vanilla April/May 2018

YOUR BEAUTY QUESTIONS SOLVED ...by Sue Adams and the team at Image
I HAVE MY BROWS TINTED BUT THE TINT DOES NOT LAST LONG. IS THERE ANY OTHER TREATMENT YOU CAN RECOMMEND?
There are a couple of brow treatments you can consider, but they vary in how long they last for. One of them is microblading – a semi-permanent makeup procedure that can dramatically correct or fully reconstruct the brow. The microblading technique involves ‘drawing on’ natural looking, individual, hair strokes and the effect lasts for about 12 months. Another option would be HD Brows – a high definition brow is created using a higher grade of pigment than regular eyebrow tints. Your HD Brow stylist begins with an in-depth consultation to discuss the size, shape and look you want, before beginning work on your bespoke brows. Customblended colour is applied and whether they darken, lighten or simply tone the natural colour of your brow hair, they will ensure your new brows complement your look, and your style. This treatment lasts four weeks. ARE THERE ANY INGREDIENTS IN SKINCARE PRODUCTS THAT I SHOULD AVOID?
There a couple of ingredients that we always make sure we avoid.
54
These ingredients should not be applied to your skin and here’s why... Propylene Glycol: this absorbs moisture your skin has, it’s basically like removing eye makeup with shampoo. Parabens: these are used a lot in products to extend their shelf life, they can cause irritation to the skin and make it more sensitive. HOW TO MAKE MY MAKEUP LAST LONGER?
Prep your skin well – cleanse, tone and moisturise. Apply primer on face including your eyelids, then use an oil-free foundation layer, cream or liquid products, with matching powder to set. Apply the makeup in light layers, wear waterproof mascara and eyeliner and finally, finish the look with a setting spray. WHY DO I HAVE SUCH A BUILD UP OF HARD SKIN ON ONLY ONE FOOT ?
Try to improve your posture and avoid leaning on one side of your body or putting pressure on just one foot. It can be developed by force of friction from the shoes you may wear regularly. Hard skin can be found on ball of your foot and heel. Regular pedicures is a great way to keep up with the removal of hard skin, gradually breaking it down with exfoliating and massage. Consider wearing appropriate shoes with insoles. n

THE
POSITIVE MINDSET
COACH
Katrina Love looks at your problems with a new perspective Q: I suddenly found I’m single again. This wasn’t the plan... I’m over 40 and feel there are a lot of adjustments to make.
A: Let’s start with that negative mindset about what’s happened. In order to feel sad we need to feel that we have lost something, that there is less of something in our lives and that their never will be... So let’s start by flipping this mindset around. What have you found? More peace of mind for example. What have you more of now? Calm? Hope? Opportunities? Love? Next.... what sort of dating might you want to try? Do a little research here. What do you want? Friendship, flirtations, love or lust? Perhaps you want to meet someone in the flesh, in which case which clubs or new activities could you start? Some of the downsides to ‘Later Dating’ is the emotional baggage that we all will have by now. Sort yours out first so it doesn’t become an issue with your new beau. Leave the past where it needs to be – way behind you. There also may be other’s children to take into account, which can either be a blessing or a curse, not to mention the ex’s! But on the brighter side, we should certainly know what we don’t want and hopefully have a little more confidence and respect for ourselves. As we get older the value of things becomes more obvious and precious. Let’s enjoy these new opportunities and embrace the fun of dating again. Perhaps you feel it’s just not time for you to date and the only relationship you will need is with yourself – which is the best investment ever.
Lifecheck are running best-selling courses: ‘The Later Dating Guide’ and from ‘Heartbreak to Happiness.’ Contact Katrina for more information: Katrina Love BSc (Hons), MUKCP, MBACP t: 07747 345 384 www.katrinalove.co.uk

HIFU: QUESTIONS ANSWERED Laser skincare specialist, Juliette John, answers your frequently asked questions HOW DOES HIFU WORK? HIFU deliveries high intensity focused ultrasound energy at 3 different depths into the skin via a hand piece. The energy creates a heat of 60-65° at these different depths causing heat trauma to the cells. The ultrasound is focused below the skin’s surface causing cellular friction within molecules and precise target-point heating. The epidermal surface remains unaffected by the heat. THE PROPERTY EXPERT
MARK CRISP
I
F you’re thinking about moving to a larger property, and you have the space, why not extend your home instead? As well as adding value it makes good financial sense, because moving costs such as stamp duty and estate agent’s fees can be put to much better use extending the house you already have. Adding living space is achievable as long as you consider four things: Budget, Planning, Design and Construction. BUDGET ● The cost of an extension depends on location, accessibility and specification, but we estimate you will need to budget £1k to £2k per m2. ● Many factors affect your budget, including: location relating to soil conditions, services, history of flooding, surrounding trees and rights of way, accessibility on roads with no parking, access to rear gardens, sloping ground needing retaining walls. ● Keep an eye on your budget when choosing fixtures and fittings. And remember to balance the amount you are willing to spend on your extension with the estimated value it will add to your home.
62
DON’T MOVE... EXTEND! PLANNING ● Building regulation approval is needed even if planning permission isn’t. ● Building regulation requirements are for structural integrity, fire safety and energy efficiency. ● You will need damp proofing, ventilation and other aspects that ensure a building is safe. ● There are different rules for extending in conservation areas, so be aware of your location.
DESIGN ● Avoid through-rooms to access the extension. ● Don’t sacrifice more than you are gaining by reducing a good size room into 2 pokey rooms! ● Be aware that add-on rooms can cut out light and make the house darker. ● Create a larger, brighter and more open space by knocking down walls.
CONSTRUCTION ● Builders are not all the same. Make sure you get a reputable and experienced one by doing your research and getting recommendations. ● Ask for evidence from the builder that they have the relevant ‘Site Insurance’ prior to starting work. Your home insurance is not enough! ● Get to know someone who has had a similar extension, they may be able to offer tips, advice and recommendations – and also what NOT to do. ● A good builder will be able to go through a step-by-step process with you of what’s involved, how much it will cost and invite you to look at their previous and existing projects. In this way you can take time to fully assess their level of craftsmanship and talk to previous clients. Lastly, take your time, do your sums and be realistic. Good luck with your project. Choosing Tiles by Nathan Hall at Just Tiles
Porcelain tiles: available in different finishes for inside-outside use
F
IRST OF ALL, choosing tiles should be fun and exciting and ideally they should be experienced in person as there are lots of different designs, styles and textures for all tastes that cannot be truly represented through social media or internet shopping. The internet gives you plenty of inspiration but nothing compares to seeing and feeling first hand. Tiles play a big part in our daily lives and how with live, so it’s important to get it right. We all want to ensure that our homes are comfortable and practical for socialising with our friends, relaxing with the family or just hanging out with our pets. That’s why at Just Tiles we offer a personal approach in assisting you when selecting your tiles.
INDEPENDENT FAMILY BUSINESS
Just Tiles is an independent family business and for the last twenty
66
years we have been helping clients choose and install the right tiles for their personal space, in a stress free and fun environment. We specialise in porcelain tiles and have a vast range of tiles that would suit most tastes and requirements – period style, modern, large formats, wood and slate effects – there are so many different options. INSIDE-OUTSIDE
Over the past few years there has been a growing trend in sliding and bi-fold doors from kitchen and living areas onto the patio outside. By using inside-outside porcelain tiles we can offer the option of having the same tile flowing through the internal and external living spaces, creating the perception of spaciousness. Inside-outside porcelain tiles are available in two finishes, natural or polished for the inside and with a grip finish for the outside. External porcelain tiles are available in two thicknesses usually 20mm or 10mm. The 10mm tile has the same qualities as a 20mm thick tile and offers a considerable cost saving. The external tiles have a water absorption rate of less than 0.5% which means that they are
classified by international bodies as being frost proof. It’s important to note however, that the 10mm thick tiles need to be laid on a concrete base and as with the laying of all tiles, preparation before implementation is key to a professional and lasting finish. Also, unlike natural stone and timber, porcelain tiles are nonporous so they have the added advantage of minimal maintenance as they do not require sealing. They are fired in a kiln at 1200°C, so they are very dense, incredibly hard wearing and they are also resistant to fading and scratching.
J
UST TILES thrives on ensuring customers walk away feeling happy and confident that they have made the right decision on their tiles, even if it takes many visits to the showroom and lots of questions on suitability and style. It is important to us that you feel valued as a customer and because of this many of our customers become lifetime friends. n

Decorating know-how by Mark Barber Painter & Decorator
Mark Barber is a painter and decorator from Ipswich, with 35 years’ experience. He specialises in interior and exterior painting, wallpapering and coving. WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON DECORATING MISTAKES?
Preparation is vital in any decorating job, and many people don’t take the time to do it properly. For example gloss painting needs a lot of prep work, rubbing down the area and priming. If this isn’t done correctly the paint will just peel off. It’s also essential that people choose materials that are designed for specific jobs. Using interior gloss paint for exterior work is a common mistake. Exterior gloss paint is designed to stand up to the rigours of the elements, and interior gloss paint isn’t tough enough. Do your research before you do any decorating work, find out what you need and don’t try to save a
70
few pennies by using one paint for numerous jobs, it will be more expensive in the long run. WHAT’S THE BEST BRAND OF PAINT TO WORK WITH?
Many people know Farrow & Ball as a high end paint brand which specialises in these classic colours, but for the same price I prefer Little Greene paint. Along with Paint & Paper Library and Zoffany – the quality of these brands are superb. CAN I SAVE MONEY BY BUYING BARGAIN PAINT?
It’s a common misconception that branded paint from the local B&Q is the same quality as trade paint, but cheaper. It isn’t, but people are duped by the packaging and advertising. Vanilla April/May 2018
HOMES
Your painter and decorator can source much better quality trade paint for you, it may cost a little more, but it will last a lot longer. Wallpapers vary a great deal in quality and price, so it’s better to buy the best you can afford to ensure the best result. Cheap, nasty wallpaper will be a struggle to put up and won’t stay the course.
WALLPAPER TOP TIPS Here are a few basic guidelines from Mark Barber if you’re thinking about wallpapering for the first time...
Ask for samples and take them home. Always look at the samples under various light sources (daylight, lamp light etc) – they may vary dramatically.
WHAT ARE THE CURRENT DECORATING TRENDS?
Whites, greys and understated colours are still very popular for paint. They are clean, classic, simple and provide a great base for statement furnishings. I think they will be on trend for a while to come. People may think that wallpaper is dated, but I still put up a lot of it. Wallpaper can bring a lovely warmth to a room and is very attractive when it’s used to create a bold or textured feature wall. Quality is key though, always, for the best results. REMIND US WHY WE SHOULD GET YOU TO DO THE JOB FOR US...
More than anything I am trustworthy and offer a reliable service. I believe in delivering high quality results every time, finishing the job when I say I will and give excellent value for money. I don’t start a job then disappear and leave it half finished. That’s all part of the reliability – you know I’ll be there the next day as promised. n To contact Mark, call 07770 608226 or 01473 273494, or email him at mark.barber30@yahoo.com www. markbarberdecorating.co.uk
April/May 2018 Vanilla
WHICH TYPE OF BACKING?
Wallpaper with a non-woven backing will be fully strippable when you desire a change. “Paste-the-wall” uses nonwoven backing paper that does not expand when it gets wet. As it doesn’t need to soak, the paste can be applied directly to the wall which cuts decorating time in half, compared to regular wallpapers. WHAT SHOULD WE AVOID?
If you’re wallpapering for the first time, avoid very small patterns with offset matches; the designs can be difficult to match up. FLAT OR TEXTURED?
Textured wallpapers can give a wall some dimension and also do an excellent job in covering imperfections. If you have imperfections in your walls, but prefer the look of flat wallpaper, using a wall liner as a base layer can give you the added coverage you need. HOW DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH TO PURCHASE?
It’s simple! Just follow this guide: 1. Measure all walls and multiply the width by the height of each wall in feet. 2. Add all measurements to yield the total square footage. 3. Deduct for windows, doors and other large openings. 4. Check the roll label for how much square foot coverage the roll gives and ensure the roll coverage is more than the total wall square footage. 5. The general rule of thumb is to order one roll extra than what you need. It is best to get it at the same time as the original purchase to ensure the rolls are from the same batch so there is no variation in colour. The spare roll is to account for an offset match and mistakes. You can always return rolls if they go unused. 6. If in doubt call in a professional – we’ll do it all for you!

Choosing the right Mattress by Chloe Last from the Bed Factory
Choosing a new mattress can seem like a daunting task, but Chloe from the Bed Factory shares her advice to help you get a better night’s sleep! LIFE EXPECTANCY OF MATTRESSES
On average, mattresses have a life expectancy of anything between 5-14 years, depending on how often it’s used and the quality of the materials used in the manufacturing process. For example hand side stitched mattresses tend to have a longer life expectancy due to all of the fillings being pulled in around the edges, it’s important to bare this in mind when investing in a new one. THE PRICE IS RIGHT
Always shop for the best value not the lowest price. There are some perfectly acceptable, lower priced mattresses available, but the better the construction, the better the support and comfort, and the longer the bed will last. Don’t be afraid to ask your sales advisor about how the mattress is made and the type and quality of the materials used. If the sales advisor can’t answer all of your questions, how will you really know what you are buying? The more informed you are, the better choice you will make. WHAT TYPE OF MATTRESS SHOULD I GET?
There is no hard and fast rule to which mattress type you should buy, you just need to
72
find the one that suits you. We always recommend visiting a bed showroom and testing out the different types of mattresses on offer before making a decision. One person’s definition of firm or soft is different to the next person’s, so the best way to find what you like is to have a lie down and test it out! SHOULD I BUY MY BASE AND MATTRESS TOGETHER?
Divan bases last on average the life of two mattresses, however when it comes to frames we would recommend a new frame to be purchased with a new mattress in case the frame has deteriorated over time. We always recommend that the mattress is tried on the same type of base or frame that it will be going onto before purchasing. WHAT SHOULD I PAY FOR A GOOD MATTRESS?
Children's mattresses can be purchased for under £100, however for two adults on a bed used every night you really need to start looking at spending a minimum of £200. Although you do get what you pay for, the most expensive is not always best when finding the perfect mattress, it really is down to the needs of the individual. Remember that for every £100 you spend on a new bed, it equals an investment of just 2.7p per night (assuming a lifespan of seven years). HARVEYS GOES ONLINE
HOMEGROWN LENTILS Not previously thought possible, one Suffolk producer has successfully harvested their first commercial crop of lentils. They were grown on six different farms including two in Suffolk. Hodmedod, pioneer of British grown pulses and grains, has worked with UK farmers in Suffolk since 2015 on trial crops leading to 24 acres of organic lentils being grown in 2017. Lentils are a notoriously difficult crop and have never been grown widely in the UK. They are low growing and not especially
74
vigorous; they need a warm, dry autumn to ripen for harvest and – even if all that goes well – are not very high yielding. Lentils come in different colours and sizes from red lentils, to speciality Puy lentils which hold their shape and have a wonderful earthy flavour. Hodmedod’s lentils are a mixture of varieties including the variety grown in Puy. Hodmedod’s lentils retain a firm bite after cooking and delicious peppery flavour that is often missing in lentils grown for the commodity market in Canada and Turkey. Try them! www.hodmedod.co.uk

Claire Darwin Lead Psychologist, Schools’ Choice
My East Coast Life We listen to peoples’ dreams and take into account things that are important to and for them, then use this information to help us think about what is positive and possible to achieve within the next year. We look at what is happening in their lives now (both positive and negative), who they need to help them move forward, how they can stay strong physically, mentally and emotionally to enable them to focus on their goals. We finish with some next steps action planning.
Claire Darwin is the Psychology & Therapy Services Lead Psychologist working across several Suffolk services including Suffolk County Council, Schools’ Choice and Creating Choice. Her work is focused on supporting emotional well-being, communication and learning and she works with individuals, groups and whole organisations.
What inspired you to choose a career in psychology? After studying A level psychology I was inspired to find out more about the link between emotional well-being, confidence and learning, both in relation to schooling and adult life. I wanted to be an advocate for people who have experienced difficulties and are held back by their own self confidence or self-belief. So I trained and qualified as an educational psychologist and then moved from London to Suffolk in 1994. After working in educational psychology, social care and school
/ organisational improvement for many years, I found out about person-centred planning. This way of utilising a person’s strengths, hopes and dreams has more impact on individuals, groups and whole organisations than I would have ever dreamt possible. My vision to share this way of working is now a strong motivation for me.
How can you help young adults who are struggling to find the right path?
One of the most popular processes we use is called a PATH (Planning Alternative Tomorrows with Hope). This is a fantastic experience for all involved and has helped businesses as well as empowering young people onto their future career paths. I have found that a lot of young adults often need support in considering the right path for them. A PATH starts with creating time to think about their lives in terms of what an ideal life would look like. The young person has time to dream and is encouraged to dream aloud and not to think too much about whether they are possible or not.
Who can access these services?
Up until now our services were commissioned by public sector and education. We are now offering the service above to businesses and young adults and their parents / carers who would like to commission our support.
Have you always lived in Ipswich?
The Ipswich move was a recent decision. I managed to persuade my husband, Mark, that it would be a good idea to move into town after having lived in two beautiful Suffolk villages for 14 years, so for the last year we have lived here with our two grown up children.
You seem like a busy person. When do you relax?
I love taking the time to explore villages, the coast and its many independent shops and cafés. I have recently taken up sewing and knitting again after having a long break from these hobbies. You will often see me on a Sunday morning with friends in local cafés or my new locals (the Woolpack and the Cult Bar) ‘knitting and chatting’. ■
