WELL DONE TO... Sonkai’s senior designer, Susan Blackler, who recently won the gold Fairtrade Jewellery Award from the Goldsmiths Craft and Design Council. The new award was created to identify and reward creative design for ethical fine jewellery. The brief was to design a fine jewellery, ring, pendant or pair of earrings that are sympathetic, symbolic and supportive to the natural world and global preservation issues. Susan’s ring represents water conservation and is called “Parched Earth”.
ROYAL NORFOLK SHOW Planning for this year’s Royal Norfolk Show (27 & 28 June) is well and truly underway. Along with another exciting programme of events in The Grand Ring, this year’s key themes will be Field to Fork, Wellbeing and Our Coast. Field to Fork will bind together the agricultural content of the show, which this year includes the Dexter breed national cattle show. Wellbeing will promote healthy lifestyles. 2017 saw the UK make great strides in highlighting the importance of mental health. Our Coast will be providing a platform for the fishing industry, a chance to discuss the impacts and benefits of renewable energy, and to promote the explosion in tourism along Norfolk’s 90 miles of coastline.
Susan will have the opportunity to liaise with Ingle & Rhode, the award sponsors, and oversee the production of her design, using ethically sourced precious metals and gems. The finished jewel will be donated to the Fairtrade Foundation.

NEWS
Houghton Hall, near King’s Lynn is one of country’s most beautiful Palladian stately home. This year William Kent’s gilded interiors at Houghton Hall will be transformed by one of Britain’s most celebrated artists – Damien Hirst. From 25th March to 15th July the Old Masters that normally adorn the walls of the State Floor are to be replaced by new works never seen in public before. These new paintings entitled “Colour Space” are a development of the iconic Spot Paintings of the 90s which are among Hirst’s most recognised works. The exhibition Colour Space Paintings & Outdoor Sculptures includes a number of Hirst’s most visually arresting works which will be installed throughout the 18th century house and gardens. The show, curated by Mario Codognato, also forms part of the visual arts programme of Norfolk & Norwich Festival 2018. www.houghtonhall.com

NORWICH LOVES FASHION
Jordan Wake jordanandfashion.com
On March 17th and 18th intu Chapelfield celebrated spring summer fashion with its first ever Norwich Loves Fashion event. But the stars of the show weren’t only the big brands; some of Norwich’s top bloggers and vloggers also shared the limelight.
“We’ve kicked off an exciting SS18 season by inviting some of our favourite style bloggers to share their love of fashion with our customers,” says Sheridan Smith, marketing manager at intu Chapelfield. “We challenged them to pick a ‘style-staple’ for spring summer: one core piece that reflects key trends but can also be worn with existing items to create a range of fabulous, fashionable looks. “We love how every blogger has chosen a key fashion piece that reflects their personality. But they’ve put together looks that provide inspiration and takeaway ideas for all of us as we transition into spring and summer.” So check out these tips on how to up your SS18 fashion game, whilst staying true to your own sense of style. For even more style inspiration visit intu.co.uk/inspire-me.

Fashion blogger, writer and visual merchandiser, Jordan captures his journey into the fashion industry, experiences at events including Paris Fashion Week and his latest buys. “As soon as I laid eyes on this H&M shirt (£19.99), I knew it was my SS18 style staple. The florals and statement print make it a stand-out piece. I always look for something that’s unique, different, and will complement my individual style. Checked trousers are something I’ve worn time and time again, and I love this latest pair from H&M (£34.99).”
@jordan_and_fashion @J_and_Fashion YouTuber Amy Astrid vlogs about style, makeup and skincare and sometimes sings too. Her Media Monthly videos are a great place to discover new things to read, watch or listen to. “I picked a pair of highwaisted tapered trousers from River Island (£38) as my staple for spring summer. I love the fit, the bold stripes and they are so, so comfy!” “I’ve lifted the look for spring with a flash of colour, pairing the trousers with my oversized yellow denim jacket from H&M, platform Puma trainers from Schuh and a ‘feel-good’ slogan tee, from River Island.” YouTube.com/amyastrid @amyastrid

Sophie writes about style, lifestyle and travel with a healthy dose of social commentary, feminism and the personal thoughts of a twenty-something. “For my style staple I chose this stripy wide-legged trouser and blazer combo from H&M (£24.99 trousers/ £34.99 blazer). The fit is a dream and it’s super comfortable. Suits cropped up again and again on the SS18 catwalks and when I saw them creeping into the ‘new in’ sections of stores like Zara and Topshop, I knew I had to have one.”

Hannah Roberts themermaidlife.co.uk Hannah is a fashion, beauty and lifestyle blogger. For bold, colourful outfit inspiration, check out her Instagram feed. “The paint box palette is a key trend for SS18 and if you follow me online, you’ll know I’m a big fan of anything bright. Rather than one style staple, I went for a two-piece co-ord from Zara. The skirt (£19.99) and jacket (£49.99) dressed together create a bold statement, but these pieces could also be worn separately, with other items in your wardrobe, to give an instant on-trend lift to your look.”
Mollie Hyde alamollie.com Mollie is a fashion and beauty blogger based in Norwich; she likes to provide light-hearted, honest reviews of products she’s tried and places she’s been as well as providing fashion inspiration on how she styles her outfits. Find Mollie on instagram and YouTube. Mollie’s SS style staple is a classic check pinny dress (Miss Selfridge at House of Fraser £22). “Tartan and gingham prints may feel like they belong firmly on winter scarves, but this ‘Summer plaid’ print, seen at the likes of McQueen and Versace, is still a key player this season – and I don’t just mean on picnic blankets.
“I usually wear my outfits a little grungy, so I paired the twopiece with my favourite band shirt, fish nets and some Docs!”
“For a laidback look I popped on a high-neck sleeveless white ribbed top (Zara £12.99) underneath the dress, creating a striking neckline contrast providing the perfect backdrop for a layered necklace (Lovisa £10). It adds a slight edge to an otherwise preppy look. I’ve teamed this combo with a casual pink shirt, the pearl button detailing subtle enough to avoid looking over-accessorised. (Zara £25.99)

ince opening her first shop in Exchange Street, Norwich, in 1994, Isobel has cornered a niche selling high-quality clothing, specifically made for the fuller figure from some of Europe’s high class brands. “I would say Pont Neuf from Denmark is one of our biggest sellers, but our customers also love Micha, Verpass, Kirsten, Yoek and our wedding wear label Personal Choice, which is from Ireland,” she said. Isobel started her own business out of frustration of not being able to find good quality clothing to fit her. She soon expanded opening outlets in other towns including Woodbridge and Alysham where she operated for eight and three years respectively. However, she now concentrates
on the Drayton shop and has another outlet in Holt, Isobel Styles for You, which she has run for twelve years. “We have customers who come to us from far and wide, including London and even Scotland,” she said. “I can’t retire because my clients won’t let me. They always say: ‘where will we go’ if I was to shut up shop.” For now her loyal band of fashionistas can rest easy as the re-launch marks a new era for this specialist retailer and the closed sign on the door at Isobel’s won’t be turning any time soon. ■ Isobel’s Fashions, 14 School Road, Drayton, Norwich NR8 6DN 01603 866860

It specialises in providing the fashion-conscious, plus-sized woman with a wide range of exclusive clothing to suit all occasions, from casual and holiday wear, to glamorous evening dresses and wedding outfits in sizes 14-36. LEATHER OF YOUR DREAMS
T
HE FIRST THING you notice when you walk into The Tannery is the gorgeous smell of new leather. It’s the aroma of quality and the finest leather goods sourced from artisan workshops around Europe, hand crafted using traditional methods. In 2006, owner Lindsay Furniss opened her first shop in Holt after her husband complained he couldn’t find a decent leather briefcase locally. “We spend a lot of time in Italy and we were always blown away by the wonderful leather goods they have, so my husband suggested I open a shop back here.” It proved to be a brilliant plan. Since then Lindsay has opened three more outlets; another in Holt, one in Norwich’s Exchange Street and the most recent in Woodbridge. The shops stock a superb collection of hand stitched handbags, briefcases, luggage, belts, shoes, gloves, scarves and homewares, and gifts such as key rings and jewellery boxes. Brands include The Bridge, Texier, Mywalit, Bellroy, Crockett & Jones, Millican, Tusting, Brics and The Tannery’s own brand of leather bags, shoes and accessories. So what is the secret of The Tannery’s success? “The key to everything we do is quality,” says Lindsay. “We work very closely with a number of family-run leather workshops, mainly in Italy, but also in Germany, France and Spain, who make the products we stock. “Our relationship with them
28
The Tannery’s leather goods are handmade using traditional techniques
is very important, because they enable us to choose styles, colours and finishes to develop our own range of unique, bespoke items that we know our customers will love. It’s very much a creative partnership, and nothing we sell is mass produced. “The workmanship and skill of the leather workers is incredible. Many products we stock are hand finished, using traditional techniques, and it’s this quality and attention to detail that makes them so special – and hardwearing too. “The focus is always on our customers, listening to what they want and pricing our goods fairly so that the best leather is affordable for everyone. No two customers are the same, some want a handbag or a bag with a
shoulder strap, others will only buy a cross body, others want a backpack style. So I am always looking ahead and ensuring that there is something for everyone.” Does Lindsay have any predictions about what colours will be in this year for handbags? “Classic, natural leather colours will always be popular, but for the Summer many customers will like a splash of colour such as yellow or orange, and for the Autumn I saw some lovely burgundy and forest green in Milan.” ■ The Tannery really is a onestop shop for the leather of your dreams. It also runs a loyalty scheme for its customers: spend £50 and get 10% off your next purchase. For more details visit www.tannery.co.uk

‘ve often wondered why people in the UK wear such drab glasses. I look around and all I see is samey shapes and colours but with a different designer label on them. It can’t be that we’re not interested in fashion. Look at this magazine, full of the latest, quality and high fashion clothes and accessories. You are reading and looking at this magazine, you must be interested. So what is going on? Choice, or to be more precise, lack of choice. UK Opticians all tend to stock the same brands and ranges, so very dull. I’ve recently returned from the largest frame trade show in the world, MIDO in Milan. The choice and ranges available are mind blowing.
When I asked the designers why they didn’t sell them in the UK they all told me because the UK market is so dull. So we’ve gone directly to them and imported ranges only available at Oculus. Styles that are beautiful, fun and stylish to wear. Just as when buying clothes, trying on different styles is fun. So we encourage people to come in and try them, experiment with different shapes and colours, it’s fun! Come and see us in Norwich, we are opposite John Lewis and we look forward to welcoming you with a cup of tea or coffee.

SIMPLY SPECIAL
The Norwich boutique that has the perfect pearls for your nuptials
P
EARL SPECIALISTS Simply Pearls, located in the appropriately chic Royal Arcade, offer a simply gorgeous array of beautiful, cultured saltwater and freshwater pearls. All the pearls are genuine – no glass or fakes here – and whether it’s a birthday or anniversary gift you’re looking for, their extensive range is bound to yield the perfect treasure. As an additional and brilliant string to their bow, Simply Pearls also offer a bespoke service for brides-to-be. What could be more perfect than the perfect pearl to match that dream dress? Whether you need a bracelet, necklace or hair vine to complete your wedding look, there’s lots to choose from. Here’s how it works: ideally a bridal consultation will last about an hour, so there’s no rushing and you can take your time. It’s useful to have with you a
34
photo of the dress, and maybe a swatch of fabric if you’re tying the knot in a colour other than cream or white. Why not take a trusted friend along too? It’s nice to have a second opinion and can make it feel extra special too.
E
XPERIENCED STAFF Julie or Karen will ask a few questions to steer them in the right direction, for example what sort of neckline the dress has or whether it has embellishments like beads or sparkles. The colour you have chosen for your wedding band or engagement ring will illustrate whether yellow or white gold or platinum will work best, and you can discuss other accessories or jewellery you plan to wear for the ceremony. “Once we have an idea of the look our bride would like to achieve, we pick out various options and encourage her to
try them all out,” explains Julie. “Sometimes people are very specific about what they want, but we also take them out of their comfort zone a bit, which often has great results!” Julie and Karen are also happy to offer a similar service to the mother of the bride or the groom. And if you would like to match your jewellery with gifts for flower girls or bridesmaids, Simply Pearls has a selection of pretty pearl accessories, popular as they make charming keepsakes once the wedding day is over. Alongside a dazzling range of locally-made hair vines, combs and tiaras, Simply Pearls has weddings all wrapped up. Why not pop in and talk to them about your Big Day? ■ Simply Pearls 3 Royal Arcade Norwich NR2 1NQ 01603 625405

“Although renting your property may seem daunting, as long as you have put in the groundwork beforehand, it can be a profitable use of an empty property!”
What are my options for letting a second home? MY QUESTION: My partner and I have moved in together. I am currently trying to sell my original home but the housing market isn’t particularly lively at the moment. What options are available to us other than selling? If we did decide to sell my house what options do we have to invest in a further property?
W
HETHER you have a second home or are looking to purchase another property, you have a number of options available including to rent to a full-time tenant, set up a holiday let or rent to students. There are a number of things to consider with all three types of rentals. FINANCIAL CONSIDERATIONS
There will be a number of financial implications including the initial expense in preparing your property for letting, the ongoing
36
repair and maintenance of your property and any agency fees and tax implications. Long term rentals: Any rental income you receive may be taxed at your usual rate and must be declared on your tax return. If you decide to rent out your home unfurnished you will not have the initial furnishing costs to account for. Holiday lets: Any income above £2,500 per annum must be declared on your tax return, although you also may be able to
offset some of the expenses. You will be eligible for tax allowances and reliefs as owning a holiday let is classed as a trade rather than an investment. Student lets: You have to declare your income on your tax return. However, student properties are usually let fully furnished and generally suffer more wear and tear. Therefore there are likely to be increased costs for maintenance and repairs. YOUR MORTGAGE LENDER
If you are looking to secure a mortgage to purchase a property with the intention of letting you will need to obtain a buy-to-let mortgage. If the property is currently subject to a mortgage, you will Vanilla April/May 2018
REAL LIVES need to advise your mortgage lender of your intentions and obtain their consent prior to letting the property. Long term rentals: Any tenancy agreement will need to be drawn up in accordance with the conditions of the mortgage lender. Holiday lets: Unfortunately, not all mortgage lenders will allow you to carry out short-term lets, but it is worth checking with your provider. If the current lender will not allow you to do so, you may wish to consult a mortgage broker who will be able to recommend another lender. Student lets: As these are usually classified as Houses of Multiple Occupancy (“HMO”) you must speak to your mortgage lender to check whether using the property for this type of letting would breach the terms of the mortgage. YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES
For all rentals you must comply with legal requirements concerning health and safety. Furnishings and fittings will also need to be properly installed and maintained including an annual gas safety check. Long term rentals: You will need to protect your tenant’s deposit in a government-approved scheme and give your tenant the required information in relation to their rights as a tenant. Holiday lets: Most local authorities require planning permission as letting your property for holiday accommodation may be considered a material change of use. Student lets: All of the responsibilities that apply to long term rentals will be relevant to student lets. There will also be additional requirements when letting out a HMO and it is April/May 2018 Vanilla
essential that you seek the advice of the local authority. INSURANCE MATTERS
When dealing with insurance cover for your property, you should ensure that any insurance policy provides specific cover for the letting of the property. Landlord insurance will usually cover additional risks such as public liability, employers' liability, accidental or malicious damage, theft and loss of rental income. It may also be beneficial to require additional security deposits, guarantors or insurance to protect against non-payment. USING AN AGENT You may choose to employ a letting Agent to deal with the day to day management of the property. This may include providing their standard form letting agreement, carrying out a
credit check of potential tenants and dealing with any repairs or maintenance. This may be beneficial if you are not local to the property. You will need to take the cost of employing a letting Agent into account when considering your overall costs. THE PAPERWORK It is important to ensure that you have a legally binding agreement in place to avoid any future disputes. Each agreement will vary depending on the type of let, however the terms of the agreement should cover as a minimum the amount of rent, payment dates, term of the agreement and each parties obligations. Although renting your property may seem daunting, as long as you have put in the groundwork beforehand, it can be a profitable use of an empty property! ■

love the model naming of Mercedes-Benz, in this case A-Class Sport Edition. The word “class” does it for me! Class by the bucketful! This latest incarnation of the A-Class features some significant and great changes. From the outside, the front end has been smoothed off even though the face is still obviously Mercedes-Benz. The new generation grille has a more sporty look about it and of course, it proudly displays the three pointed star. No question of one’s choice of transport here! It seems as though the designers have put a lot of effort into streamlining, which must be good for economy. Privacy glass helps keep the prying eyes in check but also adds to the mystique... Inside there’s even more leg, shoulder and head room than the previous generations. Access to the boot has been improved with a wider opening; so helpful when

The seats are a work of art with the contrasting stitching picking out the detail as well as being fabulously comfortable. And automatic climate control will ensure the best interior environment whatever the British weather has in store! The rest of the interior is top class. The air vents are circular and this circular styling is picked up by other features, so there is a wonderful symmetry in the cockpit. functions are easy to access, no matter what preference one has. The navigation system is standard as is Cruise Control. In terms of driver aids and information, this is state of the art! The reversing camera with dynamic guidelines is so useful. And talking of “dynamic”, the Sport edition has a selectable suspension with settings for Eco, Sport, Comfort or an Individual setting. Smart-phone integration is catered for with Apple Play and Android Auto. Of course, there is a raft of safety features, not only for collision prevention and reduction but also for pedestrian safety. There is plenty of kit to play with for those so inclined but for others, just drive and let the car look after you. Your local dealer is well placed to explain all the choices and they can advise on finance and other purchase options. So what’s to wait for? With the release of Overnight, Josienne Clarke and Ben Walker have brought us an album of wonder and depth. The meticulous beauty of the arrangements, the blanket-warm production and perfect pairing of exquisite vocals and virtuosic guitar is the culmination of everything these idiosyncratically talented musicians have been working towards since they first met. What truly sets them apart is the combination of Josienne’s divinely nuanced, emotionally affecting voice and Ben’s intricately expressive, adroit guitar technique. They cite Sandy Denny, June Tabor, Nic Jones and Pierre Bensusan as respective influences but theirs is a captivating sound that’s all their own. 8pm £16 Norwich Arts Centre

Four-wheel fantasy M
ITSUBISHI have been making four-wheel drive cars for longer than about anyone else; so they know a thing or two about off-road ability. But this latest offering is different. This is a mid sized SUV with motorway mile beating and city usefulness at the fore. The Eclipse Cross 4 sits high and consequently gives a great command of the surroundings. And talking of commanding, the driver’s seating position makes one feel in total control. Of course the steering wheel has an array of fingertip functions and the “infotainment” is displayed on a touch screen monitor, which sits atop the centre of the dash. Needless to say that Apple Car Play and Android Auto comes as standard, which is good news, as Cousin Hermione can’t be kept away from her apps for too long! I particularly like the view of the dash and it’s surroundings, refreshingly different! And the

The split rear screen is most impressive! There’s plenty of leg, head and shoulder room and interestingly the rear seating is also adjustable meaning that moving the seats rearward will increase legroom or if boot space is required, the seats can be adjusted forward. There is an under floor storage area in the boot and that compliments the other storage areas of door pockets front and rear, a shelf in front of the gear lever, a box under the central arm

rest and, of course ,cup holders!! Access for lifting in the suitcases or dropping the shopping bags into the boot space is great as the lip at the lower opening is small. Equipment levels are impressive with a full compliment of safety features resulting in a Eurocap five star rating. One impressive addition is the 360 degree camera – part of the city credentials of the car. With the automatic transmission and four wheel drive, features such as these make the Eclipse Cross 4 an easy vehicle to live with for the inevitable school run and trips into town with fantastic road traction for country life as well (so necessary given recent weather events!). Overall, the build quality and feeling of a strong well engineered vehicle must put this on the shopping list and as such a trip to Constitution Motors is a really exciting prospect! ■ 83-93 Mile Cross Lane, Norwich, Norfolk, NR6 6TX. 01603 788800 www.constitutionmotors.co.uk

The city is hosting a wealth of events this Spring and Summer - here's just a taster... UNTIL 3 JUNE
24 MARCH - 2 SEPTEMBER
Standing atop the largest man-made mound in the country, Norwich Castle has dominated the City’s skyline since the l2th century. Witnessing the ever-changing cityscape from its heights, the Castle has had many iterations of its own over the last 900 years. But what is the story of Norwich’s iconic and much-loved square box on the hill? This exhibition illustrates Norwich Castle’s rich history from Norman showpiece to County Gaol to public museum. Through a stunning mixture of prints, photographs, paintings, architectural plans, memorabilia and archives, many of which have never been on display before, the exhibition sheds light on this fascinating and complex building. Shown alongside this exhibition is the Norwich Castle Open Art Show (3 March – 20 May) Norwich Castle Museum & Art Gallery
This exhibition tells the story of architecture's fascination in the postWorld War Two decades with new technology, lightweight structures, pioneering building techniques and innovative engineering solutions. Rarely seen together, a selection of iconic models will also be on display, including the Pompidou Centre by Richard Rogers and Renzo Piano; Waterloo International Rail Station by Nicholas Grimshaw and the Hopkins House by Michael and Patty Hopkins, and a brand new three-metre-long model of the Sainsbury Centre. that the business runs smoothly and that patient wellbeing is at the forefront. “Patient care is our top priority,” says Linda, “we believe that the experience we offer our patients, from arriving in reception, to leaving after treatment, should be as comfortable, relaxed and stress-free as possible. This means providing a friendly, welcoming and punctual service, and finding out what our patients need to make their visit more enjoyable. “We are incredibly lucky to have such a fantastic and loyal team who are all trained to an exceptional standard. Practice Receptionist Alison is the first point of contact for patients and she efficiently manages the appointment system as well as all the daily administration for the practice. “Alison has been with us for over 15 years and is well known and loved by our regular patients. She makes them feel comfortable and relaxed and puts everyone at ease.” Another longstanding member of the team is Nicola who has been working alongside Ross for nearly 13 years and heads up the small team of nurses. INFINITE BODY CONFIDENCE

OR MANY OF US, especially women, exercising and being healthy is all about losing weight so that we have a summer-ready body! The weight loss and diet culture has mesmerised us into thinking that we must look a certain way — but what about how exercise makes us feel? Lindsey Beard is an inspirational personal trainer and massage therapist who runs Infinite Fitness & Therapy. Her own journey to physical fitness and wellbeing has smashed the concept of exercising just to lose weight, instead focusing on how it can help us to be our best and strongest selves. “Exercising has transformed my life in terms of both mental and physical fitness,” she says. “It has nothing at all to do with losing weight anymore, but becoming physically stronger, more capable, having more energy and generally feeling happier and fulfilled.” The turnaround came for Lindsey when she became tired of how she felt about her life. “I was always depressed, with no energy and felt I had no purpose in life. I had a terrible high level of processed foods diet, but was never overweight. So I decided to make a change, started eating better, drinking more water, and this alone gave me more energy. “I then tried different forms of exercise, at home, then in various gyms, trying to find something that suited me. I lost body fat and toned up, but for me the real benefit was how it made me feel; happier, stronger, more capable and in control of my life, like I had achieved something. “I felt proud of myself for the first time and my depression improved hugely. The simple fact is that when you exercise your body releases endorphins, which are natural anti depressants, so just moving with energy will help you feel so much better.” Lindsey also found that sports massage vastly improved a niggling injury and as a result trained to become a sports massage therapist. Lindsey is now a personal trainer at The Gym Norwich City, and provides a range of fitness massages at CrossFit Spitfire. Her passion is helping others to achieve the fitness and inner strength that has changed her life so radically. But what about eating for fitness? “Nutrition plays a big part in becoming physically fitter, but yo-yo dieting and starving yourself is never a long-term solution,” Lindsey says. “I’m not a qualified nutritionist, but I can give basic advise on how to eat healthier to feel better, especially if they are exercising. You need to put good fuel into your body if you want it to perform well.” n For more information go to Infinite Fitness & Therapy, or email Lindsey on infinitefitnesstherapy@outlook.com

BABIES TAKE TO SWIMMING LIKE A DUCK TO WATER
S
TARTING TO TEACH children to swim from newborns feels totally naturally for an infant having just spent nine months in mum’s tum. And, as we are all born without any fears, literally means youngsters do take to it like a duck to a water. Kim Bennett, franchisee of Water Babies Norfolk, knows just how true this is, as she and her team currently teach up to 950 babies a week. She said: “Being in the water is a natural place for babies to be and the sooner they get started the better. Children learn fast and putting them in water when they are very young means you never have to reintroduce them to something they already know.” The Norfolk franchise, which started up in 2005, has obviously struck a chord with parents keen to see their child master this important life skill.
54
Back then, Kim had 110 learners, but has now established classes at 17 pools located all over Norwich and the local region including King’s Lynn, Fakenham, Caister-on-Sea and Lowestoft. Water Babies Norfolk employs a total of 13 highly qualified, swim instructors who conduct 150 classes during a week. “If someone signs up for the Water Babies journey then they follow our storybook learning scheme containing 17 chapters,” explained Kim. This enables each child to progress and develop their skills so that by chapter 17 they will be able to swim and have passed all the criteria to achieve Stage 1, 2 and 3 badges from Swim England (Amateur Swimming Association). Each chapter comprises a 10-week course taking a child from newborn right through to school starting age. Kim puts down the success
of her franchise to a number of things, not least of which, is the county we live in. She said: “Norfolk is not only surrounded by a stunning coastline, but also boasts the Broads and many wonderful rivers. “I do think people recognise that swimming is a vital life skill and our clients, who come to us mostly by word of mouth, appreciate the service we provide along with our care and attention to detail. “There is nothing like skin-onskin contact between a child and mum or dad, the children benefit from a full physical work out and we also teach babies word association to help them learn. “Our primary goal is to ensure children are safe and happy in the water as well as have plenty of fun too.” n For more information on Water Babies call 01603 263227 or visit www.waterbabies.co.uk

Talking Sciatica BY JOELLE FORDHAM MOst(DO) PRINCIPAL OSTEOPATH AT BODY FLOW OSTEOPATHY If I say “Sciatica”, chances are you’ve had it yourself or you will know someone who has. However, Sciatica is a very misused medical term and the majority of people I see with this diagnosis don’t have a true Sciatica. True Sciatica involves a nerve compression which typically leads to pain below the knee, numbness and/or muscle weakness. However, referred pain from the lower back and buttock can often mimic Sciatica and this is generally what the majority of people experience. This is good news because these cases are typically much easier to treat and significant improvements are often seen quickly. I’ve seen people who had suffered from on/off sciatic-like pain for as much as 25 years get better with a course of treatment resulting in drastic improvements to their quality of life and moods. Reducing unnecessary pain and suffering is what we’re all about. Our treatment approach is gentle and effective and our new clients often comment on how at ease they felt, having initially been apprehensive about booking an appointment.

Helen Fisher owner of The Giggly Goat
USTOMERS often chuckle at the name as they walk into The Giggly Goat, Craft Shop and Gallery in Lower Goat Lane, Norwich, and that is just fine with owner Helen Fisher who likes to provide a relaxed vibe for people to browse her wares. Helen, who in March celebrated four years since opening the shop, has clearly nailed the competitive craft retail market with her ethos of providing a warm welcome to anyone who comes through the door. “I am exceptionally proud and thankful for being here for four years because you never really know how it’s going to go for a retail business,” she said. “I want people to come in and feel inspired whether that is to buy something or to go home and paint that picture or make something of their own.” She has built up a loyal following of local customers who enjoy visiting the shop to see what is new and inspiring from the 80 or so suppliers who provide a wide range of handmade goods including glassware, jewellery, ceramics, prints and paintings. “Trade has been steadily growing and I am really pleased with where I am at the moment,” she added.
new challenge. Although run separately, Helen and her mother source suppliers together visiting craft trade fairs three times a year in London and Harrogate. “First and foremost everything for sale is handmade,” explains Helen. “And while I do stock goods from local makers, I primarily host designer makers from all over the UK.” However, one of her bestsellers is the works of print-maker Samuel Thomas from Cromer, who produces brightly coloured, graphic scenes of Norfolk landscapes and towns. Helen prefers to steer away from being “too gallery” and this is reflected in the prices which range from £1.70 for a handmade ceramic button, to £120 for an original print. “To people who have never visited us I would say come and have look because we have a unique collection of items and something to suit everyone’s purse,” she said. ■

BREATHE EASY For most, Spring and Summer are glorious times of year, but for hay fever sufferers the season’s weather can have its downside. The good news is that there are numerous ways to reduce the effects of hay fever including improving the home environment. Using antiallergen fabrics that reduce the circulation of harmful pollen is one such example. Louvolite is a leading supplier of quality window blind products and they have introduced a unique treatment called Pollergen that can help with hay fever relief by acting as a barrier against pollen. A deployed blind made with Pollergentreated fabric can significantly reduce the amount of active pollen entering the home. The great thing about Pollergen is that it is a coating, making it is very versatile to use, so you needn’t worry that your choice of fabric may be limited. The treated fabric is suitable for made to measure roller blinds, vertical blinds and pleated blinds for both the home and office.
Favourite fabrics can be treated with Pollergen before making into blinds

W
E ALL NEED a bit of inspiration sometimes, especially when it comes to making vital decisions about home renovation. Concept Bathrooms & Kitchens brings ideas to life in their large showroom, which features a wide range of modern and traditional designs and styles.
“People need to see potential and how the finished room may look,” says Mark. “We can show them designs they may not have previously considered and together create their perfect space.” Fashions come and go, and kitchens and bathrooms are no different. So what are the latest style trends? “Grey is still the ‘in’ colour,” says Mark, “and traditional Shaker-style furniture is very popular. Fussy and over-elaborate is not the way to go; we are seeing clean lines, simple designs, and a lot of white for bathrooms still.”■ For more info, go to www.conceptnorwich.co.uk or call 01603 787578.

16. Bring the inside in With Spring here at last and the daffodils in bloom, our minds are turning to the outside rather than the inside. But whilst we are still waiting for those long hot days why not try and bring the garden inside by adding a dash of green into our homes.
The Woodland Walk collection from Sanderson is the perfect remedy for those without a garden or easy access to the countryside. Imagine a wall of Sanderson Woodland Chorus in the bedroom – what a lovely way to wake up! Or how about using the fabric for a simple roman blind at the kitchen window, so even if the view isn’t inspiring at least these pretty birds and flowers will always be cheery. And any plain sofa will be enlivened by having a cushion or two in Sanderson Fern Embroidery in a zingy green and white. If you are lucky enough to have a conservatory or garden studio then the Outdoor collection from Manuel Canovas is perfect for you. It uses all the zingy bright colours they are renowned for and combines them with big bold leafy prints and watercolour Koi carp swimming around. The fabrics are particularly great because they are totally weatherproof – you can leave them out all summer and they will be fine, or bring them in to the conservatory to get that Spring feeling all year round.

Vanilla meets expert joiner and furniture maker, Michael Cottrell
T
RADITIONAL WOOD furniture making is certainly a dying art. But award-winning cabinet maker and specialist joiner Michael Cottrell is keeping this wonderful craft very much alive. Based in Holt, Michael and his team of experts produce the highest quality bespoke furniture, kitchens and joinery, made to unique designs, and hand crafted from a variety of woods, using only traditional methods. Business is booming for Michael, as more and more domestic and commercial clients are bringing the beauty of wood into their home and work spaces. “I was compelled to work with wood from a very early age,” says Michael. “I love that it’s a natural, living material, with a wonderful warmth, a beautiful grain and a very distinctive smell. Wood has its own personality and is so versatile to work with, with a feel and colour that adds a natural glow to any environment. We can craft and polish wood to achieve a variety of appearances, from rich and intense to a modern clean look. You can’t do that with any other material.” After leaving school Michael became a joinery apprentice
66
locally. Six years later he left to study furniture design in Oxfordshire, and after qualifying top of his class and winning many awards, worked for two of the finest furniture makers in the country. In 2000, he returned to Holt to start a family and his own furniture business. “I needed a premises, so I found a 200-year-old barn and refurbished it to create our workshop. It’s very well equipped, so much so that we often hire it out to other businesses. We are very proud that we use only use the best materials and traditional construction methods. People are more than welcome to come and watch us work and look around our showroom.” Michael and his team can create a stunning variety of joinery, including staircases, windows and
doors, gates and conservatories, plus furniture such as dressers, chairs, wardrobes and bookcases. Their luxury, handmade kitchens look superb in any setting, from a farmhouse to a modern new-build. “We can create any style using a wide choice of wood, from English Oak, Walnut, Maple, Ash and Sycamore, to North American Poplar and Pine. It very much depends on the project, the look and feel the customer wants and personal taste. Michael Cottrell Furniture is retaining those wonderful artisan skills that we are in danger of losing. And it’s right here in Norfolk. How lucky are we?! ■ For more details go to www.mcfurniture.co.uk or call 01263 712345

HE TEAM at Paula Gundry Interiors are passionate about inspiring their clients, and above all, helping them find a look for their home which they can feel both comfortable and excited about. “We like to spend lot of time with our customers to determine exactly what they want,” said Paula. “We are not about enforcing our ideas on other people, nor do we work to just one particular style, we simply do our utmost to find what looks and feels right for them.” The six-strong team of talented designers have a studio at 14-18 Westlegate, Norwich, where there is also a beautifully laid-out store

P
AULA’S ethos has certainly struck a chord with those discerning clients seeking bespoke design coupled with the very best in craftsmanship. As a consequence, the business she first started in 2009 has flourished and grown rapidly from working on her own and opening her first shop in Unthank Road, Norwich, to moving to the company’s current city centre base in May 2016. While primarily covering East Anglia, overseas clients have sought out the studio’s high level of customer-care, skills and services. And it’s not just home interior makeovers that they are clambering for, but also its commercial design services. “I believe what makes us stand out from the competition is that we offer both residential and commercial services,” explained Paula. “Clients with businesses wanted our support and guidance as
to how they could develop their business premises and to design the sort of work environment that can make a big impact on a team.” Projects have included the reception area for Norwich firm of solicitors Cozens-Hardy LLP and Winsor Bishop’s new jewellery store in Cambridge. The team also specialise in helping people plan and build their dream kitchen and can provide tailor-made cabinetry installed by superior craftsmen. Recently they have also seen an increasing demand for purpose-built wine rooms, one of which is soon to be exampled in the showroom. Clients using the design services are given access to a vast range of furnishings and home decor brands to choose from, guided skillfully by the design team. “Interior design can start with just one small purchase which means everybody can have a little piece of something lovely,” said Paula. ■ For more details visit www.paulagundryinteriors.co.uk or the showroom at 14-18 Westlegate, Norwich NR1 3LJ

Getting to know
CARWAYROE EVENTS Since launching the company in 2016 Carway-Roe Events has gone from strength to strength. Connor and his partner Phoebe run the business full time now, after several years of them both working in city centre restaurants, in fact that’s where they met! They cover the region of East Anglia and cater for a whole heap of events from the wide range of services they offer. THERE ARE A FANTASTIC MIX OF TALENTED CHEFS AND RISING STARS OPENING THEIR OWN RESTAURANTS AROUND NORFOLK. DO YOU ENJOY DISCOVERING THEM?
Of course, we both love to eat out and try different local businesses all around Norfolk, we are spoilt for choice. One of our favourites is Brick Pizza where you can grab the best pizza in Norwich, (apart from Connor’s grandmother’s pizzas, which is how I found my love and passion for cooking). We recently tried Socuis, a new casual dining restaurant in stunning North Norfolk – the food is fantastic! WHERE DO YOU BOTH LIKE TO ESCAPE TO IN YOUR FREE TIME?
Both of us absolutely love Italy in particular the culture, the food and weather; when we have a free window we try to explore the
76
world. I’m always trying to come up with interesting dishes based on meals we’ve had while away. WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE INGREDIENTS TO COOK WITH AT THE MOMENT?
Being a chef from Norfolk, I’m all about using the most local and seasonal ingredients available. At the moment I’m loving cooking with wild garlic as it has such a unique flavour, and asparagus; rhubarb is one of my favourite ‘fruits’. We buy all our produce from Easters and love to forage for seasonal treats. WHAT IS YOUR ‘FOODIE’ PREDICTION FOR THE YEAR?
I think people will be going back to a more traditional way
of shopping, in local specialist shops and markets, looking for quality fresh ingredients. I feel the giant weekly shop in an outof-town superstore is a lot less popular. ■ Carway-Roe Events posts a ‘Recipe of the Month’ using the best of Norfolk produce; you can find it on their website or Instagram page. F YOU THINK that Mexican food is just for meat lovers, you couldn’t be more wrong. The Cocina menu has plenty of options for vegetarians, such as Lime and Quinoa Salad, and Mex Stuffed Pepper. There are also vegan choices and the menu is bursting with healthy super foods. “Both restaurants have bar areas,” Erica says, “with Tombland especially offering intimate, relaxed, cool surroundings. It also has a new outside terrace where you can enjoy the sites of the cathedral, while enjoying our amazingly priced cocktails; two for £8 on a wide selection, all day, everyday!” The colourful cocktails include the Cocina Colada, Chica Caliente, plus the fantastically-named Adios Mother Bleep and Drop It Like It’s Hot Cocktails! And don’t forget Cocina’s signature Mexican Bulldog and mouth watering Margaritas. There is something here for all tastes! Erica adds: “Eating and drinking at Cocina is fun, personable and
satisfying and it won’t break the bank. We offer deals throughout the week such as jugs of cocktails for £15 during our 7-days-a-week happy hour between 5pm and 7pm. Monday to Friday kids eat for £1 between 4.30pm and 6.30pm, with a paying adult, and on Student Thursdays we offer generous discounts on food and cocktails.” So if you’re looking for a quick bite to eat, a relaxing time, or a fun, lively catch up with friends, it’s got to be Cocina! UN, VIBRANT and full of tongue-tingling delights, the two Cocina Mexican restaurants in Norwich are proving a big hit! The first opened on Timberhill Terrace in October last year, and the second almost immediately after in December, in the iconic Samson & Hercules House in Tombland. Erica Greene, Cocina Area Manager, says: “Cocina is the grown up sister of El Mexicana, which celebrates the fun, quirky side of Mexican culture with ‘day of the dead’ signage. Cocina offers the more relaxed and refined experience you would expect from a grown-up sibling. “It’s modern and urban in character, offering authentic Mexican food with traditional influences, but with a modern twist. We keep the spicing delicate so that anyone can enjoy it, but there is plenty for those who like to turn up the heat a little!” Cocina has now unveiled a tempting new menu, packed with tasty and filling Mexican food. Erica says: “Some of our dishes are bigger plates, but we also offer tapas style dishes, actively encouraging groups to mix up their meals and try a selection of different flavours to fully appreciate the depth of our menu.

HOW TO GARNISH YOUR G&T
There’s no sign of the gin comeback letting up anytime soon. Whether you see it as mother’s ruin or it’s your go-to tipple, it’s best to drink your gin & tonic right. Floral Gins
Citrus Gins
Spiced Gins
Sloe Gins
Garnish with lavender or elderflower
Garnish with pink grapefruit & rosemary
Garnish with a slice of lemon
Lavender and Elderflower are great garnishes to floral gins as they add a wonderful perfume and are a pretty addition to the glass. The floral notes of chamomile and rose petals in gins such as Bloom and Eden Mill Love Gin are complemented by the flower garnish.
The lemon and herbaceous flavours of citrus gins like Bombay Sapphire and Monkey 47 pair perfectly with pink grapefruit and rosemary. The garnish adds a fresh vibrancy and accentuates the flavour of the gin.
Garnish with a cinnamon stick, peppercorns or chilli
80
The flavour of spiced gins such as Ophir and Pink Pepper Gin is emphasised by aromatic garnishes like a cinnamon stick, peppercorns and chilli. The additional spices emphasise the existing flavour of the botanicals.
Sloe gins, such as Sipsmith and Boodles, are renowned for their sweet complexity and fruity notes. Serve simply with a slice of lemon, which will bring out the distinctive berry flavour further and add an additional zing.

POULE DE PIC
s the new wine writer I thought I would confuse you all with introducing three wines. All are produced at the same Domaine and all three coloured wines are produced from the same grape. Domaine la Grangette is located just east of Beziers in the wine region of Languedoc, South West France. It is a property of approximately 66 hectares, not all to vines. The precise area is called Picpoul de Pinet, which gives its name to the very fashionable and popular white wine, which everyone is drinking. Imports of this wine to the UK have overtaken that of the infamous Pinot Grigio. The three wines are: POULE DE PIC is a light dry white wine. It does have balanced acidity, mild citrus and apple with a hint of spice. The warm climate here does add a little spice to all wines. Perfect for shellfish. £13.25
PICOTI PICOTA
PICOTI PICOTA is the rosé wine. This is a dry fresh rosé with only a very subtle hint of summer fruits. The spice is evident too. Perfect on a hot summer day with light food. £12.80
COCORIKO
21 Timber Hill, Norwich NR1 3JZ Tel. 01603 610573 www.norfolkglutenfree.co.uk April/May 2018 Vanilla
COCORIKO is the red wine. This Domaine is the only one to make a red wine and so it is unique in more ways than one. There’s a light purple edge to the wine, with good fruit and spice. Balanced tannins make it so easy to drink. Perfect with the red meats. £13.25
All wines are available from Tastebuds Wines Limited. Call 01603 713925 for an appointment to visit our warehouse or order online at tastebudswines.co.uk

ANDREW JONES Andrew Jones is Chef owner of Farmyard Restaurant on st Benedicts Street in Norwich. After growing up in Norfolk, Andrew learnt his trade from some of London’s most notorious and demanding Chefs, including Richard Corrigan and Claude Bosi. He has worked with the finest produce from all over the world and has cooked to a very high level in busy restaurants in Soho, Mayfair and the City. At Farmyard, his aim is to marry these skills and experience with the amazing Norfolk produce and run the restaurant he’s always wanted to work in. Since opening at the end of January 2017 Farmyard is gaining a reputation for great cooking, service and wine in a relaxed, contemporary space. WHAT INGREDIENTS DO YOU ALWAYS HAVE IN YOUR STORE CUPBOARD?
As a chef I’m all about flavour. In the restaurant the produce and cooking techniques we use are all about maximum flavour. I have a soft spot for Asian influences because of the way they pack a big punch of umami, or savouriness. I love soy sauce and miso but also more familiar things like smoked pork and Parmesan. And chilli, chipotle (smoked, dried chilli) is a big favourite. WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO EAT AFTER A HARD DAY IN THE KITCHEN?
When I get home I’m tired and want to get to bed so I don’t
84
want too much. People say you shouldn’t eat cheese before bed but I will quite often have a chunk of really mature cheddar and apple and a glass of wine when I get in. Or a bowl of shreddies, which goes nicely with a good single malt. WHAT TYPE OF COOKING DO YOU ENJOY MOST?
I can’t answer that. Cooking is so much about context and being “right” that it changes all the time for me. As a cook it gives me the most pleasure to allow the food to speak for itself rather than making it about me. We have an incredible grower that brings our veg in on the day it’s harvested, there isn’t a Chef in the world that can make produce like that taste better than it is already. WHAT INGREDIENT DO YOU THINK WILL BE THE NEXT BIG THING?
My hope is that the next big thing
won’t be an ingredient but a realisation that restaurants exist in an ecosystem of producers, suppliers, employees and customers and that all elements of this ecosystem need to be supported for restaurants to thrive. There are so many pressures on independent restaurants at the minute and there have been a number of closures in Norwich already this year. Let’s not let this continue. NORFOLK IS FULL OF GREAT FOOD AND DRINK PRODUCERS. ANY RECENT DISCOVERIES YOU CAN SHARE?
Malt Coast Brewery, they’re really new and have a great ethos and are producing some fantastic beer from Norfolk barley. ■

Kent & Danielle MSP Fitness
Partners Kent Roye and Danielle Reeve are the couple behind MSP Fitness, the new Norwich gym that specialises in keeping its customers feeling motivated and revitalised!
Tell us about how you both ended up with careers in fitness... Kent started a weight loss journey five years ago and in doing so developed a passion for fitness and a drive to help others like himself. He went on to do his personal trainer (PT) course and specialised in weight loss management, leading him to PT in various gyms. I became interested in fitness ten years ago and developed a real enthusiasm for it five years ago. I met Kent and he encouraged me to book onto my PT course and turn my passion into my career. How long have you lived in Norwich? I have lived in Norwich all of my life but Kent moved here eight years ago.
that come to our classes and for personal training. The age range is from 13 to 55 years old, of all different backgrounds and fitness abilities. Some people that train with Kent are more sport specific and are looking to improve their performance. Danielle’s clients’ goals vary from wanting to lose weight, to build muscle, or to be healthy.
What sort of clients do you have here in Norwich? We have a broad range of clients
How do you make it work, working with your partner? This is a question we get asked
a lot – we work well with each other because we both know how each other works and we have lots of fun. As with most relationships, we do have times where we get under each other’s feet. However, we always make sure that we have some time apart so we can pursue our own hobbies. When you are finished for the day, what do you do to relax? Our days finish quite late, as we run classes every evening, and so there’s not much we can do apart from Netflix and chill! On Sundays, when the studio is closed, this is our family day, so we often take the kids and our dog to the park, watch films, or go to the cinema. What are your favourite haunts in the city? We don’t go out too much in the city but when we do, we love going to Zak’s and Vue cinema. ■ For more details on MSP Fitness, their classes and personal training, visit mspfitness.co.uk
