NEWS THE W.I. BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT!

A newly-formed branch of the WI, Cake & Revolution is more ‘prosecco and body confidence’ than ‘jam and Jerusalem’. Whilst they proudly operate under the umbrella of the traditional institution, they know that to be current and reach out to members, they have to try new practices to thrive (they’ve already had cocktail making workshops and burlesque lessons). The group formed in September 2016, attracting so many women, they had to cap the membership at 100. A second group of around 50 equally inspirational women has gone on to form – so the same is about to happen again! In March they took over Ipswich Museum and put on a black tie event for 350 people. Raising £4,000 for

Suffolk is gearing up for a wonderful summer of music so let’s hope the weather plays along too! 1-3 JUNE

Lighthouse Women’s Aid, the Cake & Mammoth event featured a couple of bars, a female DJ and entertainment by a formidable array of female performers to coincide with International Women’s Day. Organising the event and selling out was all done in less than four weeks. There was cake... oh, so much cake (well, they are the WI!). More events are planned this year – watch out, in June for a charity event supporting a local charity, taking place in another iconic Ipswich building.

newsonthestreet You heard it here first!

Art For Cure’s second exhibition of art and sculpture at Glemham Hall last year raised an astonishing £175,000 in one weekend. Since then the charity has been deciding how best to distribute the money. A donation of £100,000 was made to the leading national breast cancer charity, Breast Cancer Now, to help fund a secondary cancer research project. Last month a donation of £62,000 was made to Cancer Campaign in Suffolk, a local charity that supports three breast cancer services in Suffolk – a beauty treatment and wig service; providing free, complimentary treatment courses to those affected by cancer, and providing postsurgical breast exercise classes and DVDs.

SUMMER MUSIC FESTIVALS

RED ROOSTER at Euston Hall “We’re kind of particular about our music, which is why we’ve only got the finest R&B, Americana, Soul, Blues, Roots and Country musicians on our bill.” Heading the line-up so far are Nick Lowe, JD McPherson, Nick Waterhouse and Barrence Whitfield and The Savages.

13-16 JULY

LATITUDE at Henham Park Latitude Festival is back for its 12th Edition and it’s packed with acts that promise to be more diverse, creative and comprehensive than ever before. Headlining Friday, The 1975; Saturday, Mumford & Sons; Sunday, Fleet Foxes.

18-20 AUGUST

FOLK EAST at Glemham Hall FolkEast feels more like a very English village fête than a festival, with the good humour and unpretentiousness of its patrons, the Young’uns, the guiding vibe. The 2017 line-up includes: Jon Boden, Lau, Fay Hield, Sam Kelly and The Lost Boys, Beoga, Simpson, Cutting and Kerr.

BELLA SINGLETON

Former Framlingham pupil, print designer Bella Singleton, is making a big name for herself in the world of fashion. Her beautiful silk scarves have become a bit of a cult brand and are highly sought after. Being an illustrator at heart, all prints are hand drawn by Bella with her imagined “doodles” and marks morphing into a wacky and wonderful combination of images. The scarves are designed and printed in England and available at the Tate Modern Shop, with a selection also at Marianna in Ipswich. www.bellasingleton.com

able to contribute to the work of Cancer Research UK, who is the world’s largest independent funder

into cancer research and the only charity that funds research into all 200 types of cancer.”

“It’s often the long-limbed, studious girls that don’t realise they are beautiful and spend their day’s hunched up trying to be a similar height to their other friends, that make great models,” says Sam Simpson, JMM. “They have the necessary mental commitment, as well as great bone structure.” Does that ring any bells? If you know someone who fits that description – they could be just the person we are looking for. Our 17 year old winner, Hattie Elson, who is 5’9 tall, had never considered a modelling career before entering our Face of Suffolk competition last year. Now she’s signed to Elite in London and works for them at weekends and in the holidays, whilst completing her A Levels at Thomas Mills. In previous years of the competition, we have noticed a flurry of entries just before the closing date. When finalists were asked about this on Judging Day, many said “We wanted to be on the top of the pile.” Actually, successful models are prepared and always arrive early to their jobs. By sending your application in now, you can demonstrate a similarly professional attitude. Plus you are more likely to stand out to the judges, as they will have more time to consider

your application. Judging Day: If you are lucky enough to be selected as a finalist, we will contact you and arrange a meeting with the judges. This will take about 20-30 minutes per girl. We will ask you some basic questions – about your life, why you entered and what you think modelling entails. We will also take some natural photographs and ask you to walk in high heels. Don’t panic! You needn’t be any good at these things. It’s part of JMM’s job to build confidence, teach girls how to relax and pose in front of the camera, as well as to master a proper runway walk. Even JMM’s Vita West struggled when she first started. Now, at 21 years old, she’s a regular on the London Fashion Week catwalks and can list Harper’s Bazaar, Teen Vogue and Top Shop among her clients. Modelling can be a rewarding career for the lucky few. It’s a great opportunity to travel, meet lots of exciting people, as well as earn a good living, fund a gap year or your time at university. So if your daughter, niece, granddaughter, friend or colleague is tall, blessed with good genes and has a determined, grounded attitude, we want them to enter NOW!

Vanilla April/May 2017

Stylistically Speaking... BY FASHION-LOVER K AREN WOLFF E VANS

T

HERE’S BEEN a notable change in the British recently. We are no longer keeping quiet about the old taboo subjects of politics and money, but being unashamedly outspoken. For the first time that I can recall, customers, work colleagues and friends alike are keen to engage in animated political debate and passionately discuss the latest Brexit development or the carry on in the White House, we do enjoy a daily Donald bashing! A seismic shift of the global political landscape is serious stuff and enough to make you miserable, so you might ask “what’s fashion got to do with it? Well, fashion will cheer you up for a start! If you want to feel good, look good and get people’s attention, dress well. If you want a spring in your step, wear fabulous shoes, and if you want to make a point, make it with a well-manicured fingernail.

S

YOUR COUNTRY NEEDS YOU!! (to dress well)

O WHAT’S hot in the wonderful world of fashion this spring? Well I believe there’s a bit of women versus the world going on with fashion making a BIG statement!

14

Trousers are big, wide legged and baggy, either high waisted or hip hanging and can be worn with a neat t-shirt or over sized top. With dresses, the hem lines are longer, less girly and lots of looser shapes, (figure hugging shapes are just not in vogue) it's all about independence and freedom of movement (unlike Brexit) “I’m dressing for me, I’m powerful and non conformist!” women shout as they leave our shop. As for the colour palette, this season, colours can be quite muted and business-like with

a lot of navy still around, so we suggest you pop in some bright highlights with a snazzy scarf, splash of jewellery or vibrant handbag to soften the look. The biggest trend is White! No, it’s not a seventies flashback – white shoes, white sandals, white ankle boots, but don’t lose your grip, that’s a look that can go quickly wrong with the wrong outfit. Try a white shirt or t-shirt, or my favourite, a gorgeous white jacket, they are all bang on trend. A white over the body handbag with your sparkly white trainers is the way to accessorise a casual denim look and add a neatly tied headscarf – 1950’s style – to achieve some nostalgic glamour! like the ‘Land Girls’ stepping in to save the day. We might need to step in and save the day ladies. The majority of the powerful who make the world’s decisions are male and it’s currently more than a bit messy. Which does make you wonder how it would be if women were in charge. Well, the first thing to do is put fashion firmly at the top of the agenda! ■ Karen from Fanny and Frank, Woodbridge, Saffron Walden and Colchester.

Spring... It’s It hard to know what to wear. I am at an age when although I want to look fabulous I don’t want to go overboard and be a bit ‘mutton’ if you know what I mean? GO CAREFUL with those mixed patterns and clashing colours. They may be fashionable but it could all look horribly wrong. Try a new colour. There are some really nice SALMON PINKS, happy greens and blues which can cheer up an outfit. I love to mix them with navy. Go for the crop trousers. We introduced them last year so we are ready to wear them this year. BOXY TOPS and LONG SHIRTS. Keep the boots as long as possible until the heats really hits. LYNN TURNER

STYLE

MAKEOVER HEAVEN!

G

ayle went to the very first Makeover Day for dream on in their new shop at Compton House, Eye. It was a birthday gift so she was unsure what to expect but she said “Right from the start the team were friendly and welcoming, I was surprised how certain colours and styles suited me and I would not have tried them myself. I learnt so much… natural makeup to accentuate and compliment my colourings, a hair style that suits the shape of my face and soft curls were a lovely change for me. The styling session was relaxed but still allowed my style imagination to be stretched and tested. I experimented with so many looks… it was really good fun!” Makeup: Dionne used warm tones on the eyes to enhance her natural eye colour, mascara to curl and give volume to the lashes and a warm apricot lipcolour to compliment the eyes. A blush was then applied to balance and co-ordinate the complete look.

BEFORE: Gayle as she arrived for her Makeover Day

Hair: Gayle’s hair was very long and she was after a softer look, so Sam cut the length, giving her long layers and a soft feathered fringe. Curls were added to complete the look. Styling: Gayle wanted to find a different look... to come away from the usual tunics and leggings. First she found the perfect jeans, Salsa jeans make half sizes too so it was easy to get the perfect fit. More fitted tops in gorgeous colours were tried to show Gayle how she could find a more flattering look for her lovely figure and these were paired with a fabulous coat and scarf.

“Thanks to Amanda’s advice, Andrew and I have achieved a fair and amicable settlement”

Splitting fairly after twelve years together OUR PROBLEM: Andrew and I had known each other for a long time before we became a couple. We were really comfortable in each other’s company. As our relationship developed into romance, I spent more and more time at his house, until I was practically living there. So when we saw a house in Woodbridge that we both loved, we knew we would buy it together. Some months ago, though, Andrew told me the relationship just wasn’t working for him and he felt we should go our separate ways. I had contributed a lot to our lives together and I didn’t want to walk away without my fair share. KAREN, WOODBRIDGE

34

HOW IT WAS SOLVED:

When Andrew and I saw our dream home it seemed so natural to be buying it together. We sold his house and used the equity from that for a reasonable deposit, putting our names on the new deeds as joint tenants. As we weren’t married we always kept our finances separate. We agreed that Andrew would pay the mortgage and utilities, while I paid for the food shopping, TV and telephone, as well as for a couple of nice holidays each year. It all worked out as a fairly even split of bills as our mortgage wasn’t huge. Then, when my granny passed away a few years ago, we decided to use my inheritance to pay for a home office to be added to the back of our property too. When Andrew told me he wanted to separate, my natural instinct was to fight it. We’d been together for a long time and had built our hopes for the future around each other. It wasn’t until after the initial Vanilla April/May 2017

REAL LIVES shock had worn away and I really examined our relationship that I realised he was right. We had been drifting apart and our interests didn’t align any more. Andrew asked me to move out of our home – he said he had paid the deposit and, as he also paid the mortgage, he felt the house was really his. That didn’t seem right to me and my aunt had mentioned something about being entitled to half of everything as Andrew’s ‘common law wife’, so I decided to seek legal advice.

I

passed the Barker Gotelee offices every day on my way to work – they’re easy to get to with no car parking worries, so I knew meetings there would be easy. I decided to telephone to make an appointment as soon as possible. Amanda and I met a couple of days later and I explained my new situation to her. Just getting the whole story off my chest was a great relief. Amanda was supportive and incredibly easy to talk to. She told me that common law marriage is very much a myth, with no recognition in English or Welsh law. She said that, as we were unmarried, I had no automatic entitlement to any financial support from Andrew nor any claims on his personal savings or pensions. As I had a copy of the deeds to the house with me Amanda was able to look at these and she said that, as we had signed as joint tenants rather than as tenants in common, there appeared to be no clear indication of the level of entitlement we each had to the property. Amanda explained that ours was April/May 2017 Vanilla

not an unusual situation. As I had paid my fair share of the bills and to extend the property, although I would need to evidence my contributions, I should be entitled to a fair share of my home. I asked Amanda if we would need to go to court. She said that, as we were unmarried, we would have to use civil law, rather than going through the family court, and that negotiation through solicitors may be an easier route. I went away from the meeting and started to sort through my receipts and paperwork from the last twelve years. Luckily, I had bank records that proved my contributions to the household bills, as well as for the holidays we had taken. I had also kept all the records for our extension, which had added to the value of our home.

M

eeting with Amanda again I felt fully prepared for the negotiations with Andrew and so she contacted his solicitor. Andrew had the house valued and we worked out the percentage we had both contributed. Once Andrew had agreed to pay me fairly for the contributions I had made, Amanda drew up a Deed of Separation for us, formalising the agreement. In the end, we sold the house, each taking our fair share of the equity and now, thanks to Amanda’s advice, I can relax in a new home of my own. Amanda and the team at Barker Gotelee have been a great support, on hand throughout the process for friendly advice and guidance. ■

of being ‘at home’ in such an authentic and historic corner of Suffolk.” LUXURIOUS ACCOMMODATION

When guests enter through the grand hallway, they’ll have access to a dining room with polished oak table and plush seating for up to 24 guests. Ideal for a dinner-party or a delicious feast for the extended family. There’s a fully fitted kitchen with modern appliances so you can enjoy preparing a hearty meal – or have the Bruisyard chefs prepare one for you. The Hall is available self-catering or catered or a mixture of both. Just off the kitchen, there’s an oak-floored games room with billiard table, flat screen TV with Sky and armchairs you can melt into. Upstairs, the attic has been turned into a quirky bar, with sofas, beanbags and a separate poker area.

A stone’s throw from the Hall, the barn that once housed pedigree Friesian cows has been converted into a grand setting for weddings and parties. The exposed oak beams, wooden floors and high ceiling still retain the feel of medieval times, with great natural light and views of rolling farmland. BRUISYARD’S FRIENDLY TEAM

Behind the scenes there is a friendly and dedicated team that works hard to make your stay at Bruisyard Hall perfect and unforgettable. From preparing and serving locally sourced food to keeping the Hall spotlessly clean and making sure the guests have everything they need, they work their socks off to make every stay as special as possible. PEOPLE HENRY CURTIS-WILLIAMS: FROM DARK TO LIGHT

IN MEMORY OF

HENRY

Henry Curtis-Williams: From Dark to Light Art Exhibition, will run for two weeks between May 27th and June 10th, celebrating the extensive portfolio of photography, textile and mixed-medium artwork that Henry Curtis-Williams crafted during his life.

Tragically in May 2016, whilst suffering from a sudden and severe mental illness which was unknown to his family and friends, he took his own life in London. The circumstances of Henry’s death remain deeply upsetting for his family, friends and those he met during his time studying and working between London and Ipswich. Organising and displaying this exhibition is a way for them to grieve openly and celebrate the raw and extraordinary talent this wonderful young man possessed. An honest and positive dialogue about mental health is being promoted, with the support of mental health charity MIND (www.mind.org.uk) and male suicide prevention campaign CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably, www.thecalmzone.net). Both charities will be represented, not only at the guest preview opening night on 26th May, but through related materials in the exhibition space with information on how to access vitally important helplines and support networks for those affected by suicide. l 27 May-10 June 2017 Loveone, 21 St. Peters Street, IP1 1XF. YEARS OF I SUCCESS T WAS IN 1928 that my father, Bill, first opened his shop doors at 24 Norwich Road. After getting married, he and my mother Gladys moved into the flat above and were still living there in 1938 when I was born, so that's where I spent the first years of my life. It was wartime of course. I remember nights in the shop cellar, often joined by neighbours who did not have their own air raid shelters. The siren went off and we would go through a trap door and down a steep staircase, sometimes spending all night in the bunks. I don’t remember being frightened. My family life and the business were so closely linked: the shop was

my playground! A regular task was unpacking handkerchiefs from big boxes and folding them neatly into squares. I also sorted Clothing Coupons into piles depending on their colour – probably before I could even read! The Norwich Road in the 1940s and 1950s was a vibrant community of small businesses, mostly family run, with owners living above their shops. There was everything: a bakery, confectioner, tobacconist, chemist and at least three butchers. This rich assortment of shops provided everything we needed and created a selfcontained community. I left school early to move into the world of retail. Believing that I should broaden my experience

before joining the family firm, my father arranged for me to start work first at an outfitters called Johnson’s on Colchester High Street then with Victor Raper at 2 Upper Brook Street in Ipswich. Victor was a charming man, and a great salesman, but not the most organised retailer. I learned more from him about how not to run a business!

I

T WAS when my father died, in 1957, just two months into my National Service, that I started on a new chapter of my life: responsibility for the family business had arrived much sooner than I had predicted. My focus was keeping the business running but my father had embarked on a five-year development plan and I was

determined to see this through. I acquired properties in the area, adjacent to our shop and in the streets behind, creating more retail and storage space. As the business has grown, over nearly 90 years, we have extended my father’s original shop at 24 Norwich Road sideways, backways and upwards! It's a real family busines and two of my four children now work for Coes. They were involved in the business as children just as I was. My son William remembers

that one of his first tasks, aged about nine, was clearing snow out of the car park. He went on to study at Bath University and train as a chartered accountant, but joined the business in January 1997, taking over as Managing Director a year later. My daughter Bridget joined in 1998 and leads our largest department – childrenswear – and in 2002, William’s wife, Fiona, came on board and established our highly successful womenswear department.

S

ince my father opened for business in 1928 retail has changed almost beyond recognition: independent businesses have declined and national and international brands have taken over high streets across the country. But, to this day, we still follow the approach to retailing adopted by my father back then. Understanding the importance of following fashion and identifying trends is vital, but most importantly he believed firmly in offering exceptional customer service. The old adage ‘the customer is always right’ is never wrong and we consistently put the customer first in everything we do. As I look back on my 60 years involvement with Coes, I feel confident that the principles my father founded the business on will be the foundations of success for another 60 years or more ahead. Under William’s leadership – and my watchful eye – we hope to be serving customers in East Anglia for many years to come.

‘Your holiday photos on Facebook could be used in evidence at a disciplinary for unauthorised absence’

H

OLIDAYS can cause problems for both employers and employees. For example, what happens if a member of staff puts in a leave request for a key time for the business? Granting the holiday would leave them short-staffed and they can’t take the risk of allowing the worker the time off. The employee then comes back and says she is taking the time off anyway, regardless of her request being declined – what can an employer do? Write to the employee stating the reasons you have refused the request. You should also tell them that their absence will be unauthorised and could run the risk of disciplinary action. If the employee still goes, then the disciplinary should be held on their return. If you are a business which has predictable busy periods then you would best advised to set these April/May 2017 Vanilla

EFRAIN from pulling the infamous sickie. It’s hard to return to work with a deep tan after you’ve had a week off with a stomach upset. Or even if you come back without a tan, putting your holiday photos on Facebook could be used in evidence at a disciplinary for unauthorised absence. If you have a special occasion or want a longer holiday, give your employer the most notice possible. A good example is a member of staff who booked her holiday in December 2016 for her trip of a lifetime in January 2018. Plenty of notice means plenty of time for your employers to make alternative arrangements. ■

COLON HYDROTHERAPY

OU MAY HAVE heard of Colon hydrotherapy but it’s probably not been the hot topic at your last dinner party! Colon hydrotherapy (or colonic irrigation) is a natural treatment that is enjoyed by thousands of people every day, from celebrities and film stars to ordinary people of all ages, from all walks of life. It may seem a little strange at first, but as you learn about the treatment and its many benefits, we’ve seen that it can be a very natural way to take care of your health and wellbeing. Vanilla went to visit Najma Khan, founder of the Revive Colon Hydrotherapy Clinic in Ipswich, to find out more about the treatments they offer. WHAT’S INVOLVED?

NK: Colon hydrotherapy requires safe, reliable and efficient machines which have been designed for that purpose. At Revive Colon Hydrotherapy Clinic we use the Colon Hydromat, which is considered by many to be the best available. Filtered temperature regulated water is introduced into the colon through a disposable speculum. After the waste material in the colon is softened and loosened it is evacuated through a flexible plastic hose that connects the speculum to the colon hydrotherapy device. There are no smells or mess to worry about. It is very safe as the water is introduced at low pressure so there is no danger of bowel perforation. The treatment

lasts around an hour and your modesty is preserved at all times. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?

NK: For centuries, various methods of colon cleaning have been advocated as a cure for many diseases. A clean colon is better able to absorb nutrients and there is less opportunity for the toxins and harmful bacteria to be reabsorbed into the body. Our clients come here for a range of benefits including: relief from IBS, constipation, colitis, Crohn’s disease and stomach cramps; to hydrate and detoxify the body; boosting weight loss and the immune system; improving mental clarity and for help in achieving a more radiant skin complexion, as the process helps with acne, dehydration, psoriasis and eczema. IS IT PAINFUL?

No, depending on the individual, some people may feel only minor

discomfort. Only in the case of an impacted colon you may experience a slight discomfort. Some cramping may occur as the colon contracts to expel waste. Most people find the session pleasant and relaxing. IS THERE ANY DOWNTIME?

Many people come during their lunch break and head back to work afterwards. There is no need to fast, in fact it is better for the therapist’s assessment if you don’t. Following a cleansing of the large intestinal, the body may feel weary or relaxed. This is simply your body working out and processing through its cleaning period; proper rest is important at this time to give your body time to rejuvenate. n For more details contact Najma Khan at Revive Colon Hydrotherapy Clinic, 172 Colchester Road, Ipswich IP4 4RS t: 07875470103 www.revivecolonhydrotherapy.co.uk

YOUR BEAUTY QUESTIONS SOLVED ...by Sue Adams and the team at Image

HOW DO I CLEAN MY MAKE UP BRUSHES?

Brushes are tools to help you achieve perfect make-up and flawless skin and, if they're not cleaned properly, can become a breeding ground for bacteria which may cause spots, rashes and hives. Acne-prone skin has a field day with dirty brushes, spreading acne all over the face. Cleaning them is easy – try a cosmetic brush cleaner or there are some great battery-operated gadgets around that clean your brushes so that they’re like new each time... worth the initial investment of around £50. If you are on a budget, Johnson’s baby shampoo is a great product to use. Put a small squirt in the palm of your hand, run your brushes under warm water and swirl them around in your palm until clean; repeat if necessary. Quick tip: never stand your brush up after cleaning as the water will slip down the brush hairs, weaken the glue and this will cause your brushes to moult. Instead, lay them on a cloth or towel to dry. I OWN 5 FOUNDATIONS AND I DON’T LIKE ANY OF THEM. HOW DO I MAKE SURE MY NEXT PURCHASE IS THE RIGHT ONE?

Think about what you would like from your

52

foundation. Do you want a full, medium or light coverage? A matt or dewy finish? And do you want it to be a perfect match to your skin tone or a bit warmer so you don’t need a bronzer? Are there particular formulas you prefer – powder, liquid, mousse or cream compact? By knowing the answers to the above four questions it will make your hunt for the perfect foundation much easier. Also consider using a primer as it helps your foundation glide on better and can also help disguise open pores, dehydration and fine lines. A setting spray or powder will help the longevity of your foundation and will also help achieve that flawless complexion. MY OVER-PLUCKED EYEBROWS ARE SO THIN. CAN YOU RECOMMEND A TREATMENT OR PRODUCT? I HAVE EVEN CONSIDERED A BROW HAIR TRANSPLANT...

Before embarking on a hair transplant procedure I would suggest that you look into other professional treatments such as a) Microblading, whereby ‘hair strokes’ are added by hand, giving a beautiful shape and making the eyebrow appear fuller. b) Semi-permanent makeup applied via a micro needle that penetrates the skin’s deeper layers. c) a less permanent option, the HD Brow treatment, which creates a beautiful natural brow by tinting, tweezing, threading and plucking. Your therapist will also show you how to maintain the perfect shape at home and recommend the correct homecare products for you. n Vanilla April/May 2017

THE

POSITIVE MINDSET

COACH

Katrina Love looks at your problems with a new perspective Q: I have such low self esteem and am unhappy with the way I look. A: Why are you unhappy with how you look? Who

are you comparing yourself to? 91% of women hate their bodies. As a woman there is always tremendous pressure to be pretty or beautiful. You are so much MORE than that. It is not the most important thing in your life to try to measure up to someone else's unrealistic ideas of how a woman should look. Often the images of models or celebrities that we may aspire to, do not actually exist as they have been photoshopped beyond all recognition. Cellulite, curves and any blemishes are removed, taking all that is normal away, until we forget what real women are and look like. When our mental compass is turned towards negative we notice the good things less and feel discontented even when we obtain the results that we want. We lose weight and we want to lose just that bit more. We look good in an outfit but it would look even better if.... (insert one of the 20 thoughts that just sprang into your mind then). This self doubt is what the multinational companies that sell the products are counting on! Treat yourself and your precious body with the love and respect that it deserves. As Taryn Brumfitt from the Body Image Movement says “Your body is a vehicle not an ornament”. Go and watch her award winning documentary Embrace at the University of Suffolk, May 9th and change the way you see yourself.

ose weight, reduce wrinkles, fight cellulite; we’re constantly told to fight a battle to be someone other than who we are. Women and girls are constantly led to believe they’re not as good as they should be. And why? Because every day they feel they’re being judged on their appearance and how far away it is from an unachievable ideal.

At the Body Image Movement, they’re on a quest to redefine and rewrite the ideals of beauty. Their job is to harness and facilitate positive body image activism by encouraging women to be more accepting of who they are, to use positive language regarding their bodies and others, and to prioritise health before beauty. The goal is to reach as many women as possible around the world and speak to them about how we can learn to fully embrace and love our bodies. To get the word out there, Taryn Brumfitt, founder of the Body Image Movement has filmed Embrace the documentary. Embrace uncovers why poor body image has become a global epidemic and what women everywhere can do to have a brighter future. A funny, touching, at times gut wrenching but above all, life changing documentary, the heart of Embrace is Taryn’s story. How she went from a body hater to a body lover. From being devastated by her perceived ugliness to proudly posing nude for the whole world to see.

n Embrace has a special screening at the University of Suffolk on Tuesday 9 May. For info visit www.uos.ac.uk/event-list

2017 CLOAKROOM BATHROOM TRENDS TRENDS

See p81 for stockist’s details

The downstairs cloakroom is a room where us Brits love to go to town on the decor. A place to showcase the wilder side of your design personality! As well as displaying all those certificates and awards, your downstairs toilet can offer your guests a glimpse into what makes you tick, so unleash your creative side and have fun when planning your cloakroom. Whilst these small spaces are often retro-fitted underneath the stairs or bolted on an extension (having replaced the outdoors toilet of yesteryear), the convenience of having a cloakroom can’t be underestimated. And because these spaces are so often tight on space, specially designed cloakroom suites that work in the limited space are advisable – compact cloakroom vanity units or small cloakroom basins, back-to-wall toilets and bathroom wall cabinets. But how do you start planning your cloakroom design when you’re starting from scratch? Get more design ideas and advice at Ipswich Bathroom & Tile Centre.

STYLE FILE BY DARRELL SMITH ARCHWAY CARPETS, WOODBRIDGE

10. Trends for 2017 Like a wallcovering, carpet can change the look of your room dramatically. The latest styles are bold, but there are also some great understated designs around if you prefer a more subtle look. Here’s our low-down of the latest carpet trends. ● COLOURS Colours are becoming bolder, with designs in rich red, chocolate brown and beautiful tones of blue, from navy to aqua. Rich tones will look smart in living and dining areas, while the softer shades are an ideal choice for bedrooms. If you’re going really bold, take a sample home to make sure it works in your interior. ● PATTERN Pattern is growing in popularity again, especially stripes, chevrons and checks. When choosing a pattern, the general rule is that larger and bolder patterns are best suited to bigger rooms. Carpets with small patterns in a mix of colours are good for busy rooms as they can help disguise day-to-day wear and marks, whereas bright colours can make a real style statement. ● TEXTURE Texture adds interest to carpets in neutral tones, such as beige or brown, and can be used in most rooms. It can be as subtle as a flatweave herringbone design, or more defined with chunky bobbles. Avoid using textured carpet in a dining room as food spillages can be hard to remove. ● CARPET TILE RUGS These are so cool! I mean, we think so. You have an almost endless list of options to create custom rugs by choosing carpet tiles and linking them together. This trend is popular with families because if one part of your rug gets damaged, it’s just a carpet tile, and you can easily replace it.

What common decorating mistakes do people make? Preparation is vital in any decorating job, and many people don’t take the time to do it properly. For example gloss painting needs a lot of prep work, rubbing down the area and priming. If this isn’t done correctly the paint will just peel off. It’s also essential that people choose materials that are designed for specific jobs. Using interior gloss paint for exterior work is a common mistake. Exterior gloss paint is designed to stand up to the rigours of the elements, and interior gloss paint isn’t tough enough. Do your research before you do any decorating work, find out what you need and don’t try to save a few pennies by using one paint for numerous jobs, it will be more expensive in the long run. What decorating trends are you currently seeing? What should we be doing in our homes? Whites, greys and understated colours are still very popular for paint. They are clean, classic, simple and provide a great base for statement furnishings. I think they will be on trend for a while to come. People may think that wallpaper is dated, but I still put up a lot of it. It’s very attractive when it’s used to create a bold or textured feature wall, and wallpaper can bring a lovely warmth to a room. Quality is key though, always, for the best results. n Mark can be contacted on 07770 608226 or 01473 273494 April/May 2017 Vanilla

FOOD

FOOD PHILOSOPHY: LOCAL... FRESH... ORGANIC.

Whenever food writers talk about the importance of “local food”, it raises a smile. In Asia “shopping local” has been the norm for centuries and people connect the success of any dish with the freshness of the ingredients. Watch Asians food shopping and you’ll see them picking up, smelling and very closely examining everything before deciding whether or not to accept it. Aqua Eight at 8 Lion Street in Ipswich has always cooked with organic meat and produce, guaranteeing the quality of its ingredients by working closely with local farmers, fish and produce suppliers. Their customers expect no corners to be cut and want to enjoy the best quality. Of course rice and noodles still need to be imported (sadly, still no paddy fields in Suffolk!), plus Asian spices, condiments and a few selected exotic fruits. But seasonal, local food is as important to them as it is to you and their menus change regularly to reflect this. To reserve your table at Aqua Eight call 01473 218989.

Origins of tapas may vary depending on who you speak to. Some will argue it came from 19th century Spanish royalty in Cadiz whilst others will go further back to the 12th and 13th centuries, telling tales of taverns masking the bad scent of poor wine with strong smelling cheese. To some extent, other cuisines have their own form of tapas - think of Italian antipasti, Greek mezze and Thai whiskey traditionally being served alongside a spicy accompaniment. For us Brits, our equivalent you could argue is the humble pork scratching or salty peanuts! We at The Crown are all about having a good time which is why we have developed our very own British Tapas menu which is now available at our bar. T

he newly re-opened Arbor House has already been shortlisted for two categories at the Casual Dining Restaurant and Pub Awards 2017 – Independent Casual Dining Pub of the Year and Best Designed Casual Dining Pub or Bar – and it’s not at all surprising. Formerly the Arboretum, the pub was a favourite haunt for Ipswich Art School in its heyday with the likes of Maggi Hambling or Roxy Music’s Brian Eno among the regulars back in the day. Now the new landlords have created an incredibly warm and upbeat little pub, with a surprising menu and the perfect ambience for chilled out chats. There are board games and cosy corners, and it is beautifully decorated in a modern take on the Victorian saloon bar, with deep blue wooden panelling and buff coloured walls.

The Arbor chef, Jason, is a little bit of genius when it comes to creating original pub food with a difference. Their signature dishes are the little plates at £4 each or three for £11 – ideal for sharing with mates and utterly delicious. There’s a huge range – pork rinds with spiked tabasco sauce are fluffy popcorn-like pillows of crackling, brie bites with a gorgeous tomato and chilli jam were light and airy little mouthfuls, spiced salmon skewers were moist and fabulously flavoursome. The halloumi chips – what an invention – carb free and sumptuous – better than a real chip and ever so moreish. The tempura vegetables – slithers of red pepper, mushroom and aubergine encased in a silvery cloud-lining of the lightest batter – are perfection. Tiny hoops of calamari with a silky homemade garlic mayonnaise are undoubtedly addictive. The

buffalo wings are properly spicy and juicy. Other choices include cocktail chipolatas, homemade hummus and crispy potato skins. There are also platters to share – Scotch duck egg, smoked ham, mature cheddar, homemade fruit chutney and crusty bread – or a meat-free version with a spicy chickpea Scotch duck egg, and grilled aubergines instead. Their burgers too are a house speciality – and again the list of choices runs to a whole page of temptation. All served in brioche buns, with a choice of chips or wedges, the French bistro burger is topped with melted brie, garlic mayo, caramelised onions and arugula, Ye Olde English burger is topped with smoked ham, and there are vegetarian versions with halloumi and red pepper, grilled aubergine with mozzarella and basil pesto. The Arbor blackboard presents a couple of trusty pub-grub specials every day, just as expertly executed – pies like beef and horseradish, or lamb and mint, and the perennial favourites of fish and chips. The traditional pud changes each week – sticky toffee pudding or perhaps gooseberry crumble. They also host as steak night every Wednesday and cater for parties and gatherings in the delightful upstairs room, the Aviary. The Arbor is small but perfectly formed and full of love. This is a really lovely place to spend some time with friends and family away from screens and the scrabbling of everyday life – and a fabulous opportunity to try out some fantastic food.

Courgette cake SERVES 8 If you love cake but would prefer a healthy option, this is the one to try. Not only does it not use any refined sugars, it is also suitable for those with wheat and dairy intolerances. 60g raisins (soaked overnight) 150g dates (soaked overnight) 250g courgettes 125ml rice bran oil or sunflower oil 2 large eggs 225g spelt or rice flour ½ tsp bicarbonate soda 1tsp gluten free baking powder

76

FOR THE CREAM 3 cups of cashew nuts (soaked for a minimum of 2 hours) 1 cup orange juice 4 tbsp maple syrup or honey Squeeze of lime juice If you need the quick soak method: Raisins: place in a small saucepan, cover with boiling water and simmer for 5 mins with the lid on. Dates: add to saucepan with cup of boiling water, cover and simmer for 10 mins ensuring there is sufficient water so that the dates don’t burn.

1 Grate courgettes on a coarse cheese grater, setting aside a small quantity for decoration. 2 Drain raisins and leave in the sieve. Drain dates and put in a food processor with the oil and whizz up until smooth. Allow to cool sufficiently then add eggs. 3 Mix flour with bicarbonate of soda and baking powder and add to mixture. Blend well. 4 Scrape mixture into large bowl and add the grated courgette and raisins. Mix in thoroughly and divide between two 20cm loose bottom/springform tins. 5 Bake in preheated oven, Gas mark 4/180°C for 30 minutes. Leave to cool in tins for 5-10 minutes before turning out on to wire racks. 6 To make the cashew cream, drain the nuts and put into food processor with orange juice, squeeze of lime and the maple syrup or honey. Whizz up until really smooth which can take up to 5 minutes. It should be spreadable, not too stiff or sloppy. Add a bit more juice if needed. 7 Spread ½ of the cream on one half of the cake and place the other half on top. Use the remaining cream to cover the top of the cake. Joannah Reynolds Happiness Store, Woodbridge

Joannah lives in central Woodbridge with her husband Richard and daughters Annabel and Clara. She owns and runs Happiness Store which sells giftware, designer stationery and items for the home.

How long have you been running Happiness Store? I opened Happiness Store in Woodbridge back in 2010 and the business was founded with the aim of creating a relaxed shopping experience in a store providing stylish, affordable and thoughtfully selected products. Hopefully, everyone can find some lovely new additions to their home and gifts for friends and family. What did you do before creating Happiness Store? I have had a varied career but my first employment was at the John Lewis Partnership, and from there I went to Harrods, then moved around London in various different positions before returning to Norfolk to join the family publishing business when my father retired. I then joined a specialist recruitment business in Bury St Edmunds. Happiness Store began its life as Happiness Children’s Store, a business I founded selling children’s preowned designer clothing from home.

How do you source such lovely products? Aaah... my favourite thing! More recently I have discovered Pinterest and Instagram – I was a late developer and am now addicted... They are the most fabulous sources of inspiration for researching on-trend colours, styling and products. I research everything from architecture, styling, interiors and fashion to food trends and you can also gain an insight into how the leading stores of the world interpret and develop trends both from a buying and merchandising perspective. I also regularly visit trade fairs

which I find increasingly inspirational in their curation and from these I can source commercial products from large companies as well as the more unusual pieces from much smaller and artisanal suppliers. What store developments are you especially proud of and excited by? We recently became stockists of Kate Spade stationery and gifts which I am really proud of. I have a wish list on the go all the time of products and brands I hope to introduce to the store. We are also in the process of building an online Happiness Store and hopefully by the beginning of the Summer we will be ready to launch. What are your hidden gems in Woodbridge ? Honey & Harvey for my Breakfast Muffin before work is an absolute favourite. More recently, I had a rare lunch break with a friend who introduced me to The Cooks Shed in Gobbitts Yard where we had a lovely lunch, choosing from a great selection of locally sourced and seasonal dishes. The Cooks Shed is definitely going to become a favourite of mine! n Happiness Store 6a Thoroughfare, Woodbridge 01394 548815
