NEWS

T

he City of Stories Murals trail is a great way to explore Norwich city centre. A Norwich Business Improvement District (BID) initiative and accessible via the free to download ‘Discover Norwich’ app, the trail showcases vibrant and creative artwork which is captivating and eyecatching. Designed and created by both local artists and those with ties to the city, areas of Norwich are brought to life like never before.

SAY HELLO TO... FIRE & FLUX in St

newsonthestreet ....and on the Norwich Grapevine WHAT A WEEK! Norwich Fashion Week 2017 has again been hailed as a ‘tremendous success’ with an exciting array of sell out catwalk shows, a party-themed finale and a host of fantastic opportunities and educational support for up-and-coming creative talent. NFW is a Community Interest Company run by volunteers, with support from Norwich’s Business Improvement District (BID). Emma

Harrowing, one of the directors of Norwich Fashion Week, said: “This year’s NFW has proved once again just how much creativity we have here in Norfolk.

Benedict’s isn’t just a gallery and shop where you can enjoy and buy beautiful ceramics from talented local artists, it’s also a place you can come to learn. They offer taster sessions for the beginner and weekly workshops and courses. Everyone is encouraged to be creative and original, to learn the basics and develop their art in a great environment.

There has been fashion and styles to suit all different tastes from the disco era of the 80s to couture and ready-towear pieces made right here in Norfolk.” THE FARMYARD

PUB OF THE YEAR

The Norwich branch of CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) have selected The King’s Head in Magdalen Street as their ‘2017 City Pub of the Year’ and also overall ‘Pub of the Year.’ Thrilled landlords, Stephen and Lesley George, who took over the pub in 2013, said: “The King’s Head is a special place, a showcase for Norfolk’s many microbreweries, and has wonderful regulars who are keen to try our ever-changing range of beers. And it’s a place where people engage in the old art of conversation!” April/May 2017 Vanilla

St Benedict’s is fast becoming the culinary street in the city. Newest restaurant is Farmyard – Norwich’s first ‘Bistronomy’ style eatery. They say: “We’re a mash up of a relaxed ‘bistro’ experience but using the same top quality produce and bold, vibrant flavours as top notch gastronomic fine dining gaffs, without the fuss”. Can’t wait to try it!

THE TANNERY

A new home for Norwich’s luxury leather shop

A

FTER multiple trips to Italy where they would admire the well-priced and beautifully made leather goods, Lindsay Furniss and her husband Ian decided they should open their own Italian-inspired specialist leather goods store. In May 2006 The Tannery was born and last year they opened their fourth shop in Woodbridge. The well-loved Norwich store has just moved from the Royal Arcade to Exchange Street. Vanilla caught up with Lindsay to find out more about this lovely local business and why they made the change...

PHOTOGRAPHY: SYLVAINE POITAU

So why have you moved from the Royal Arcade to Exchange Street?

The Royal Arcade is a beautiful listed building, so we were restricted in our shop’s external presentation, and storage space. Moving The Tannery to Exchange Street has enabled us to style our shop with its own identity. The shop is painted in Tannery green – to match our brand – and now we have sufficient space to stock April/May 2017 Vanilla

shoes and every colour and style of bag and accessory that our customers could want! What made you choose Exchange Street in particular?

Exchange Street forms part of The Lanes, which is the home of independent retailers and interesting things for discerning customers. It is also home to some wonderful new cafés and restaurants. With Exchange Street being on the way to St Andrews and St Benedicts, visitors to Norwich will pass The Tannery and hopefully will pop in to see what we have to offer. Why is Norwich such a good home for The Tannery?

Norwich is a wonderful city for shopping and food, all in a great historic setting. Locals know that at every turn you will find a church or some place of interest. It is this backdrop that makes the city a special place to visit and a good location for The Tannery. We are touched by the number of local customers who pop in, or write, to say how pleased they have been

with the products they have bought as well as the good service they have received. We spend a lot of time training our team – they are able to not only show customers suitable products, but also talk in depth about them – how they are made and should be cared for. We are looking forward to welcoming customers, both new and old, in our new store. Any more plans in the pipeline?

We have just received The Tannery Spring handbag range from our suppliers in Italy. The Italians make the most tantalising leather goods often using vegetable tanned leathers and in great designs. However it is bright colours that are often popular with our customers and this season we have some “hot” and “cool” colours – burnt sienna and bright yellow to remind you of high summer and different hues of blue and grey to remind you of our big Norfolk skies. We have just launched our Spring Handbag promotion – there are hundreds to choose from – so have a browse online, or even better, visit the new store and you’ll be sure to find a beautiful bag, at a great price. ■ The Tannery, 12-14 Exchange St, Norwich NR2 1AT. 01603 661600 www.thetannery.co.uk

uccessful family businesses are rare these days, as children go off to forge their own paths in life. But one of the best-loved Norwich businesses, Albrow & Sons Jewellers, is run by a family that shares a passion for fine jewellery, and this is the key to their success. The shop on All Saint’s Green was opened 30 years ago by Richard Albrow senior, who still runs it with his sons Richard and Harvey. Together they have forged a reputation for the finest quality antique jewellery and silver, an expert eye for the best pieces, and the kind of craftsmanship that is uncommon on the high street today. “My brother and I came into the business pretty much straight from school, and we have never looked back,” says Harvey Albrow. “We all work very well together and all have individual strengths. But as a rule the goal is the same, to maintain quality in everything we do, and to offer

A family affair: Richard Albrow Senior with sons Harvey and Richard

our customers a very special and personal service.” Anyone who has been inside Albrow’s cannot fail to be impressed by the sheer range of treasures on display. There are a few new pieces, but the majority is period; Georgian, Victorian, Edwardian, Art Nouveau and Art Deco, and a wonderful array of rings, necklaces, brooches, silverware and unusual curiosities with an intriguing history. “You won’t find anything here in a catalogue, each piece has its own unique story to tell. We don’t stock things you can find anywhere else,” says Harvey. Knowing what to buy and sell must be a challenge, so how does Albrow’s keep on trend? “Like any retail business we are very fashion led. Increasingly, we find that people want high end pieces and excellent value for money – quality rather than quantity. Some things are always best sellers, such as rings, and we have over 1,000 in stock.

“In the past few years we have seen a lot of white metal and diamonds, but the trend is now changing to old gold and coloured gems. This is great news for us because most antique jewellery is yellow gold, and our particular forté is, of course, older pieces.” Craftsmanship is generally dying out, but Albrow’s are rightly proud of their in-house workshop, where a team of goldsmiths carry out repairs, alternations, and also design and handcraft bespoke jewellery. “We do everything on the premises, and this expertise is something most high street jewellers cannot offer. It’s all part of our ethos of keeping quality high for the customer.” Let’s hope the family behind the striking pink exterior of Albrow’s continues to tempt us with their own special brand of sparkle! “Don’t just assume that because your partner is not paying the mortgage that they are not entitled to a share in the property”

How to protect your rights when buying a house with a partner MY QUESTION: My partner and I are looking to buy our first house together. I’m putting a larger share of deposit into the property and although I don’t like to bring it up, am concerned about protecting this. What can I do?

B

uying a property with your partner is a big step. More couples are purchasing a house together before marriage and many will never marry at all. Although we may not want to contemplate separating from our partner in the future, it is always helpful to know what our position would be if the worst happens. It is

42

important to clearly set out your ownership of the property at the outset, to ensure that both parties would receive the correct percentage of the net proceeds on sale or transfer. The two options of ownership are joint tenancy and a tenancy in common. Being “joint tenants” means that you both own the whole of the house

equally. If you sell the property, you will share the net proceeds of sale equally. If your partner passes away, their share of the property automatically passes to you, irrespective of what their Will says. When the survivor dies, the property will pass under the terms of their Will and if they do not have one, then to their family in accordance with the intestacy provisions. Holding the property as “tenants in common” means that each of you own specific shares of the house. For example, you can agree to own equal shares still (50/50) Vanilla April/May 2017

REAL LIVES or unequal shares (such as 60/40). You can also agree the shares in which you will repay any mortgage. If you sell the property, then the sale proceeds will be divided in accordance with the terms of any agreement between you, normally recorded in a Declaration of Trust. If you cannot agree, the courts will ultimately decide on the division. If one of you dies, their share of the property will pass in accordance with the terms of their Will, or the intestacy provisions if they do not have a Will; and will not automatically pass to the joint owner. If you have a mortgage on the property, you are both jointly and severally liable to pay it, meaning that if your partner stops paying their share, you have to pay the whole mortgage.

A

Declaration of Trust is a document which sets out your respective beneficial interests in the property, such as the net proceeds of sale are to be split 60/40 between you and your partner. You can also set out any express terms which you wish to include, for example, what happens if only one of you wants to sell. Make sure that you give clear and detailed instructions to your solicitor though because any error can be difficult to rectify. Even if you choose a joint tenancy now, either of you can change this to a tenancy in common at any time. This is called “severance”. When you sever, you will automatically become tenants in common in

April/May 2017 Vanilla

equal shares. However, you can enter into a Declaration of Trust if you wish to specify unequal shares or other express terms that you wish to be bound by.

S

o, which is best for you? Each has its own benefits and drawbacks and so you need to have an honest discussion with your partner and your solicitor about what you would like to happen if you do split up. If you do get married, your Declaration of Trust may not have as much significance; though this is subject to changes in the law. What if only one of you is buying the house and the other is just going to be living there?

The non-owner will not have any legal claim to the property but it is possible that they will be able to make an equitable claim to it. For example, if your partner buys a house but you pay for the redecorating or home improvements, you may be able to argue that you have increased the value of the property and obtain an equitable interest in the property, equal to the increase in value. This is a complicated area of law and each case will be dependent on its facts but don’t just assume that because your partner is not paying the mortgage that they are not entitled to a share in the property. ■

Golf gets a facelift T

he Volkswagen Golf holds the accolade of being the hatchback by which all other hatchbacks are measured. Given that the Golf was the fourth most popular new car in the UK in 2016, any overhaul is big news. Take the new R-Line, launched this March, it still does the things that other Golfs do – provide a practical and economical means of transport, superb reliability, and safe driving – but Volkswagen has now given it a thorough mid-life overhaul and we really like what we see! When compared to previous makeovers, the changes to the outward appearance of this new Golf are comparatively subtle. Of course, there are some lovely styling additions like specific front and rear bumpers, radiator grill, 17" alloy wheels, ‘R-Line’ sport seats and LED headlights and tail-lights; all part of the slightly more muscular R-Line styling kit.

VW Golf R-Line Fact File Mpg: 65.7 (combined) OTR price: from £25,065 Comfort: ★★★ ★ Economy: ★★★★★ Fun Factor: ★★★★★ Verdict: The look and feel of a real sports performer. A visit to the polo tournament in this is likely to raise a smile of envy and a knowing nod of approval for sure. Inside the layout of the instruments and controls is well proven. The gloss-black fascia, aluminium pedals and fancy seat trim of the R-Line do make it swish in a restrained kind of way. The steering wheel and seats have all manner of adjustment, so finding a comfortable position is possible for all shapes and sizes, music to the ears for Cousin Hermione... while the range-topping Discover Pro system moves from eight inches to 9.2 inches. And VW has tweaked the motion sensor in the screen – the component that allows it to pop up relevant menus when it detects your hand moving towards it. Other new features are focused on driver assistance but the one that caught my eye was Trailer Assist, which uses the rear-view camera to help when reversing a trailer which will make life much easier this year at the Gymkhana. In summary, the R-Line is still a Golf but with but with some wonderful styling enhancements and a vehicle you can be proud of. As a top of the range car, the standard specification is extensive but even so there is room for some optional features. The easiest way to decide if these suit your requirements is a trip to your Volkswagen dealer, Robinson’s. ■ www.robinsons.volkswagen.co.uk

THE GENTLE TOUCH

For the past three years Norwich dentist Ross Campbell has been treating his patients using advanced laser technology

“L

aser dentistry has transformed the service we offer patients, and it’s wonderful to be able to treat the everyday, as well as more complex dental needs, in a way that is pain-free and much less traumatic. For anxious patients this is especially helpful.” explains Ross. “The beauty of lasers is that they are completely safe and very gentle. We can carry out many procedures less invasively, which is hugely beneficial for the patient because it means recovery time is much shorter and far more

50

comfortable.” “The applications for lasers are very broad and wide ranging. They can reduce muscle and joint pain, using deep penetration to reduce inflammation and promote more rapid healing. Ulcers and lesions can be soothed, tooth sensitivity relieved or eliminated, and gum disease can be treated very effectively because lasers can focus on very small areas and reduce the spread of bacteria.” “A laser can also speed up tooth movement during orthodontics, delivering faster

results, and I can carry out minor surgical procedures, which are much less invasive than conventional techniques. This includes the removal of growths or excess tissue from inside the mouth,” says Ross. After 12 months of increasing pain from sensitive teeth, Karena Taylor needed to find a solution. “Drinking or eating anything cold was very painful. I tried different toothpastes, but they only gave me temporary relief, so Ross suggested that laser treatment could work very well for me, and I was keen to try. Vanilla April/May 2017

“It took just 5 minutes, was completely painless and the relief was instant. Ross asked me to drink a glass of iced water in the surgery afterwards and there was no pain at all, it was magical! I had three treatments three months apart, but I haven’t had one for 6 months, so it’s improving all the time. A brilliant result and it’s wonderful to be pain free at last.” Lasers are also very effective for cosmetic treatments. “We can use the laser to contour or shape gums to improve the appearance of the smile, and skin tags, blemishes or lumps on the face can be quickly and painlessly removed with excellent results,” explained Ross.

“Laser dentistry has transformed the service we offer patients in a way that is painfree and much less traumatic.”

F

or 10 years Kate Battrick had been self-conscious about two fleshy lumps on her forehead and nose. “I hated them, and while most people said they didn’t notice them, I knew they were there. I wanted to get them removed, but most of the treatments I looked into seemed too invasive. “I talked to Ross and he assured me he could remove the lumps quickly and painlessly with a laser, and he was right. The procedure was very quick, no more than 15-20 minutes and all I felt was a slight April/May 2017 Vanilla

State-ofthe-art: the Waterlase, which uses laser energy and water spray, replaces the need for traumatic drilling

tingling sensation, not unpleasant at all. “Immediately afterwards the area glossed over and there was no need for a bandage or even a plaster. Just 5 days later it was completely healed and there was no evidence of surgery. “I am thrilled with Ross and his laser treatment – this is a totally pain free, easy way to have irritating skin blemishes removed. I recommended it to a good friend and she is equally delighted with the results.” Of course it goes without saying that safety is paramount. Ross is constantly updating his

knowledge and understanding and last year completed an intense Fellowship course. “I am currently a student again, studying for an International Master’s Degree in Laser Dentistry through the University of Genoa. This is such an exciting area for the future of dentistry and one I want to keep firmly up to date with.” If you would like a free cosmetic consultation please contact Alison on 01603 660758 or reception@rosscampbell.co.uk and mention this article. WELLBEING

illa VanO RT REP

Evie Jefford, physiotherapist and owner of the Jefford Centre in King Street, is no stranger to creaky knees: it’s something she is often asked about by clients in search of relief from either an occasional twinge or, worse, chronic pain.

GREAT NEWS FOR KNEES

E

vie, who specialises in musculoskeletal disorders, opened her clinic over a decade ago. In 2015, in response to huge demand from clients specifically with knee problems, the Jefford Centre became the only East Anglian provider of a system called AposTherapy, which can offer an alternative to drugs (or the dreaded surgery) for some sufferers. Most of us experience knee pain because of something called knee osteoarthritis which occurs when the cushion of tissue between the end of the thigh bone and the top of the femur has become worn and is no longer doing the job it is meant to. Although we tend to believe dodgy knees are a result of sporting injuries or a bit of overzealous exercising, it’s actually a very common issue often linked simply to the

52

passing of time. As our brain tells our muscles to tighten around the knee joint in order to prevent further injury, we end up walking differently – without realising it – which in turn puts more pressure on the joint and causes more pain. It’s a tricky situation far too many of us are familiar with. This is where AposTherapy comes in, a non-surgical treatment to stop this vicious cycle.

B

ack to those brain signals. AposTherapy re-educates your brain and muscles to work properly again. It's an extremely effective system which simply creates healthier walking patterns due to improved bodyalignment. Specialised computer equipment records the exact way you walk, then Evie calibrates a specially-designed shoe – which has pods underneath – to your

specific needs. Wearing it for an hour a day as you go about your normal business, at home or work, is all that's necessary. Gradually it reactivates your balance mechanisms and activates the muscles that support the joint, eventually alleviating the knee pain. The system’s appeal has been wide-spread, with over 50,000 worldwide users to date, and Evie believes it’s a gamechanger for many who feel they just can’t live with such agonising pain any longer. If you think your creaky knees could do with a helping hand, contact Evie for an initial assessment: it’s possible that just 60 minutes a day could bring them back to life. HAIR TRENDS by Ivy, Creative Stylist at John Olivers

WHAT ARE THE HAIR TRENDS FOR 2017?

TIME TO LOVE YOUR FEET Luxury Medi-Heel pedicures at Spruce House Hair & Beauty

W

e are moving quickly towards the sandal season, so now is a good time to take care of your feet. If you look after them while they’re still hiding away in boots, you’re going to have less of a hard time whipping them into tip-top shape when you reveal them on the beach. For decades pedicures have followed the same routine, now MEDIHEEL has reviewed the traditional methods and developed a new system which guarantees longer lasting and better results for clients. During a MediHeel pedicure there is no filing or blading, instead a callous remover tonic is applied. It’s a keratolytic chemical, which means that it only concentrates on the dead skin cells. The ‘callous remover tonic’ works only on the outer layer of the heel, softening the skin making it easier to scrape off. Then a neutraliser is applied to return the skin back to its natural pH level. The aim is to achieve smooth, polished feet after only one treatment. Your feet will have a silky soft feeling – this treatment at Spruce House needs to be tried to be believed!

April/May 2017 Vanilla

This year is all about embracing natural texture and softness. We will be seeing lots of layered styles, face framing and fringes. Colours will be more vibrant than the pastel tones we’ve been seeing recently. We expect to see a lot of reds and coppers leaving the salon as well as bold blues and greens! FAVOURITE PAST TREND?

My favourite haircut is the bob. It is one of the most technical haircuts to get right but it is incredibly versatile and can be adapted to suit every face. YOUR ‘CAN'T-DO-WITHOUT’ PRODUCT

Elixir Ultime Versatile Beautifying Oil Cream. I love this product. It can be used as a leave-in treatment, a blowdry lotion or to finish and add shine to your style. It’s lightweight and smells incredible. PRODUCT OF THE YEAR

It has to be L’Oreal’s Smartbond. It protects your hair whilst undergoing any colour service. Ask for it in the salon and then follow it up with the ‘at home’ treatment to keep your hair looking softer, stronger and shinier. CELEBRITY HAIR

I am a big fan of Katy Perry's new shorter style. An undercut is a great way of giving your usual crop another dimension. John Olivers 13 Red Lion Street, Norwich NR1 3QF 01603 626125 30b Elm Hill, Norwich, NR3 1HG 01603 621275 www.johnolivers.com April/May 2016 Vanilla

REPOiRlla TS

in FACIAL treatments Thanks to revolutionary developments over the past decade, we’re living in a golden age for anti-ageing skincare. Today we can improve our looks without suffering or breaking the bank. But how do you know which treatments actually work – or how much they hurt? Here’s just a few of those being talked about… THE OXYGEN FACE WORKOUT

Treatment: This facial takes less than half an hour. First, the skin is blasted with a gun-type contraption – officially called a Cool Lifting Gun – which emits frozen carbon dioxide, better known as dry ice. The freezing, -20°C temperature causes the blood vessels to contract and then dilate, which improves the oxygen and nutrient supply to the skin’s surface, making it appear more radiant. The carbon dioxide is also mixed with hyaluronic acid – a hydrating substance that can hold up to 1,000 times its own weight in water and is brilliant for plumping skin. The high pressure of the gun means the hyaluronic acid molecules penetrate deep into April/May 2017 Vanilla

the epidermis (the top layer of skin). The rest of the treatment is facial massage, which helps to ease puffiness, sculpt facial contours, boost circulation and ease tension from muscles. What they say: “I’m impressed by how much better I look after this super-speedy treatment. It was worth the chilly start.” DERMAPLANING

Treatment: The idea of having your skin shaved, free-hand, with a sharp blade may not sound like your idea of fun – but Dermaplaning, to give it its proper name, is actually an advanced form of facial exfoliation. What it involves: Performed

by a skin specialist using an ultra-fine scalpel, careful shaving dispatches the outermost layers of dead, polluted cells that make the face look dull, and leaves the skin more receptive to moisturisers. Dermaplaning also removes the fine hairs on the face known as ‘peach fuzz’. What they say: “After the initial anxiety has subsided, it proves to be a very gentle and relaxing treatment. With all its tiny hairs shaved off, my skin feels as smooth as porcelain and looks miles younger because it reflects the light so evenly. I am glowing. My make-up glides on. A perfect treatment to have in preparation for the Christmas party season.

FACIAL STEM CELL REJUVENATION

Treatment: Not for the squeamish, this process harvests fat from somewhere on your body where you have an abundance of it and injects it back into your face. The idea is to restore lost volume and reduce wrinkles by adding rejuvenating stem cells, which stimulate the skin’s ability to repair itself. So first your spare fat is sent off to have the stem cells extracted. How it feels: The fat harvesting is almost like a mini-liposuction and the reinsertion of the stem cells, using a derma-roller that creates hundreds of little holes in the skin will be uncomfortable. Expect to need some recovery downtime, too. For two days afterwards you look like you’ve gone a couple of rounds with Frank Bruno. What they say: “Incredible. It’s absolutely worth it. About two weeks later my skin looks moist, healthy, clear and, above all, young. And what’s amazing is that the treatment keeps on improving for weeks as the new stem cells work their magic.”

Dermasweep

Mesotherapy

DERMASWEEP

Treatment: This is a microresurfacing technique – new generation microdermabrasion, if you will – that has the added benefit of being combined with topical treatments to address specific skin issues. What it involves: The treatment uses a machine rather like a vacuum cleaner that has a number of different treatment tips to exfoliate or deliver serums. How it feels: After cleaning and drying the skin, the first stage is an exfoliation using a combination of the vacuum and a bristle tip, which is passed methodically in lines across the whole face. The second stage involves infusing ‘actives’ into the newly cleaned skin. What they say: “My skin certainly looked brighter afterwards, with a glow that lasted for a few days. It would be a great pre-party treatment because there’s no downtime – my face was just a little pink afterwards. For best results, they recommend four to six treatments spaced ten to 14 days apart.”

MESOTHERAPY

Treatment: Mesotherapy uses a mechanised injection gun to introduce a cocktail of moisturising hyaluronic acid and skin-boosting vitamins into the face. How it feels: Not half as painful as you might think. The U225 meso gun knocks a 3mm needle repeatedly into the skin. Each of these little wounds will stimulate the production of collagen and elastin deep in the skin. They work steadily around the face injecting the serum cocktail, then turn up the speed of the needles. After that, you luxuriate under the peaceful red LED light to calm down your traumatised skin. What they say: “I was warned that I would look as if I had been stung by a swarm of bees but I only look a bit freckly and sunburned, and even that subsides by the end of the day. What I really notice is how amazingly plumped up my skin is, with a whole 5ml teaspoonful of magic cocktail now trapped between the upper and lower layers. The next day, I look great.” Vanilla April/May 2017

ACUPUNCTURE NEEDLES help to sow seeds of success

S

uch has been the success of using acupuncture for fertility patients at complementary healthcare centre, Treat, director Rebecca Geanty, is now seeking funding to undertake an official study to measure the centre’s success rate. Around 70 per cent of Treat’s 1,000-strong patient list will visit the centre looking for help to conceive. An official study conducted in 2002 revealed women who undergo acupuncture before and after rounds of IVF have a much stronger chance of becoming pregnant. “The Paulus Study showed a 23 per cent increase in the amount of live birth rates for those patients who underwent acupuncture,” explained Rebecca. “We are having a lot of successful outcomes with our patients, so I am applying to the British Acupuncture Council, which currently has five bids of £10,000 available, so I can properly measure those outcomes.

“If agreed, the research would give us some firm statistics and help us tailor our treatments more effectively.” Fertility acupuncturist specialist, Rebecca, launched Treat, based at Capitol House, Heigham Street, Norwich, in July 2016. The centre boasts 19 complementary health therapists, many of whom also offer treatments to aid women seeking help both before and post-pregnancy. PREPARING THE BODY

Many of the therapies on offer at the centre can help women relax and prepare their bodies for pregnancy. Reflexologist Jane Sheenan works on rebalancing hormones and reducing stress through giving deeply relaxing treatments aimed at helping regulation of the menstrual cycle, while nutritionist Kirsty Williams can give advice about the right diet to create a fertile body.

Van

lla REPOiR T

“Many other treatments such as massage and Cranial Sacral Therapy help to de-stress a person and bring hormones into balance,” added Rebecca. “Also our multi-bed clinics make treatments more affordable for people who, for example, might want acupuncture but would like to try other therapies too.” The popularity of Treat has grown largely by word of mouth recommendations and the fact that Rebecca is constantly looking to improve the centre’s offering. “We have just raised £545 for the Big C cancer charity through a 12-hour acuthon and we will be doing another treatment taster day here on 1st July,” said Rebecca. World of Colour, a psychotherapy group, is also launching a series of professional development courses at Treat and will be offering affordable psychotherapy sessions for patients of the clinic. ■

Lighting expert SOPHIE AMES The Norfolk Lighting Co. OUTDOOR LIGHTING

Whether you want to enjoy your garden after dark or you need to illuminate your driveway, here's my quick guide to kicking off your outdoor lighting project… Where to start?

CALM: To infuse a room with a sense of

peace, you need to choose colours you feel comfortable with. This is when pastels come into their own. Generally greens and blue-greens (the colour of nature) tend to feel much calmer. White’s with a green hue are both restful and refreshing, whilst greenerblues can encourage a good nights sleep and are still easy on the eye in the morning. The most serene colour family is the aqua group. These will create a really harmonious scheme that is particularly successful in bathrooms and bedrooms. The most important thing when trying to imbue a sense of calm is to keep contrasts minimal.

See p97 for stockist’s details

Tile & Stone Gallery

Will your lighting need to be practical by highlighting pathways and steps and deterring intruders with a security light? Or do you want to create an ambience for al fresco entertaining? Whatever the function, there are many factors to keep in mind: ● Size of your outdoor space and the features you want to highlight (statues, walkways, decking, ponds, trees). ● Power source: Fixed, electrical lights need to be connected to the mains, so ideal for lighting close to the house. Solar lights are great too and portable so can be moved if needed. ● Environmental impact: Lamp temperature, glare and energy efficiency need to be considered to minimise impact on the environment and wildlife habitats and avoid annoying your neighbours! My top tips…

Experiment at night! Save time by connecting a floodlight to a long extension lead and walking it round the garden to work out different effects. Avoid Glare! Think about where guests will sit at night and avoid direct light there, especially decking lights which are tricky to move once installed.! NEED MORE LIGHTSPIRATION?

We can help you achieve that special effect for your outdoor lighting project and from April, we will have a new outdoor lighting display at our showroom in Taverham Garden Centre, so come and take a look.

simple colours. Neutral shades on the walls create a feeling of space and give the illusion that the walls are further away than they really are. This is especially true when combined with white accessories that reflect light. To reflect the maximum amount of light, if possible, paint the floor white which will bounce light on the walls. If you want to use colour but still create an airy feel, bring in strong contrast on the woodwork so that everything above them feels light and ethereal.

As well as displaying all those certificates and awards, your downstairs toilet can offer your guests a glimpse into what makes you tick, so unleash your creative side and have fun when planning your cloakroom. Whilst these small spaces are often retro-fitted underneath the stairs or bolted on an extension (having replaced the outdoors toilet of yesteryear), the convenience of having a cloakroom can’t be underestimated. And because these spaces are so often tight on space, specially designed cloakroom suites that work in the limited space are advisable – compact cloakroom vanity units or small cloakroom basins, back-to-wall toilets and bathroom wall cabinets. A LOVELY WORK OF

ART

N

ORWICH has a thriving art scene, and one of the best places to go in the city to find the best of what’s on offer is The Gallery Norfolk, which opened in 2016 and has become a designation for high quality, contemporary art. Gallery owner Polly Miller says: “We opened our first gallery in Cromer in 2012, and the eclectic mix of carefully chosen art and handmade

crafts and jewellery, plus expert in-house picture framing has been hugely successful there. We knew that it would be equally popular in Norwich. “We like to do things a bit differently, we seek out talented artists, quirky crafts and jewellery so that we are offering something personal and very special. Much of the work we sell has an East Anglian connection and is inspired by the wonderful nature and coastline of the area, which makes it even more interesting. “All our artists are contemporary and we try to show a really wide selection of styles to suit all tastes, including original oils, limited edition prints, photography, ceramics, glass and sculpture.”

The gallery’s best-selling artist, Ruth Bunnewell

74

If you think art is just for the super rich, think again! Polly is keen to point out that at The Gallery Norfolk there is something to suit every pocket. “Art should be available to everyone, not just for the very wealthy. We have lovely original works starting from as little as £30, then up to £3,000 for large scale work.” The Gallery Norfolk is now working with Own Art – the Arts Council initiative – offering interest free loans to spread the cost of buying art over 10 months. So which artists is Polly particularly excited about exhibiting? “Norfolk painter Ruth Bunnewell is a firm favourite, tipped by House & Garden magazine as a rising star of British landscape painting, plus other highly regarded East Anglian painters such as Richard Dack and Molly Garnier – and the brilliant pet portrait artist Jenni Cator. “We also have contemporary print makers of national renown, and collectors come to us for Jill Desborough’s minotaur sculptures and fantastical puppets, and for Anya Keeley, maker of curious creatures, or beautiful handmade ceramics by Daniel Reynolds, Selena Bragg and Polly Fern.” One year after opening in Norwich, The Gallery Norfolk has made a name for itself for superb art and crafts. “Our customers often comment about the beautiful things we have here, which is wonderful,” says Polly. “We want people to come here and be inspired.”■ For more information visit www.thegallerynorfolk.co.uk or call 01603 761900.

pply the same design principles to your garden that you would to your home. What does that mean? First, don’t junk it up with tons of orbs, birdbaths, and sculptures – nature should be the main attraction. Any decorative items should serve to catch the eye or anchor the garden, and lead the eye from the indoors to out. Beautiful shades by Sweden’s Acro-Beckers

STYLE FILE BY HOLLY PAGANI INTERIOR DESIGNER AT SALT INTERIOR DESIGN

12. Pastels Pastels and blush tones are perennially popular but they seem to be having a ‘moment’ this Spring. Blush pinks, pretty mints and baby blues are appearing on fabrics, wallpapers, ornaments, glass and ceramics.

I think many people believe that pastels are only really for nurseries or childrens’ rooms, but this isn’t the case. Painted kitchen cabinets and furniture can look really refreshing in a pale tone, especially if it’s broken up with a charcoal or denim shade. Some of the softest shades are available from Alcro-Beckers, a Swedish eco-conscious paint manufacturer. With over 300 shades to choose from you’ll be able to find just the right one.

Sanderson’s Palm Grove fabric collection

Rebel Walls blossom mural wallpapers

Little Greene Paint Company also offer a fine choice – my personal favourites are Starling’s Egg and Secret Shell which are so pretty together and have a slightly vintage vibe to them. Of course a big block of colour (any colour) can be a bit full-on, but by mixing three or four shades in a wallpaper you can introduce these soft shades in a more interesting way. Big mural styles papers are great for this – Rebel Walls have a great selection of flowers in oversized form which look amazing on big or small walls. The blossom is particularly beautiful. ● For ideas on how you can accessorise a room or for any interior design queries contact Holly at Salt Interiors: info@saltinteriors.co.uk. FOOD THE ITALIAN APERITIVO In Italy the word “aperitivo” is the name for both the ritual of going out for a pre-dinner drink, as well as the sort of drink that you would probably have at such a ritual. At Italian restaurant Saporito in St Andrews Hill, friends and family unwind together in the early evening enjoying a typical spritz aperitivo, or beer or wine. It comes included in the price a buffet along with different nibbles.

MEXICAN GETS ME JIVE TALKING! Vanilla Reader Review

M

Y TASTE BUDS are still doing a happy little dance after a trip to Jive Kitchen & Bar on Exchange Street, in Norwich. After opening just 6 months ago, this authentic Mexican street food restaurant is already creating a buzz in the city, and I can see why. Mexican food has a reputation for being heavy, but Jive Kitchen is streets away from those predictable chain restaurants where you feel overstuffed with the same ol’ same ol’! The vibe here is light, zingy food, gorgeous colours and complex flavours, delivered by seriously creative people in the kitchen. We were seated in the window with a splendid view over Gentlemen’s Walk. Jive is on two floors and has been lovingly restored. Stylish, rustic and thankfully not a sombrero in sight! The menu is simple, but I like that. There are ‘bar snacks’,

84

‘appetisers’, and ‘taqueria’, which are dishes served on a flat corn tortilla. We asked the kitchen to set its stall out and bring us a range of dishes that best encapsulates what they do. It was the best decision I’d made all week! We started with some bar snacks to whet our appetites; ‘Tex Mex’ pork quavers, like crackling but feather light and crispy, plus some great fresh tortilla chips, both served with a superb cool and chunky guacamole. We chose a dark and fruity Spanish Bodegas red which suited the food perfectly. Next up were some delicious appetisers; buffalo halloumi, with arbol chile and toasted cucumber (the rich red sauce was so good we asked for the recipe!); and king prawn skewers, with jalapeño slaw and BBQ pineapple. Both dishes were colourful, bursting with vibrant flavours and zingy spices, and beautifully presented. We agreed we had never tasted food quite like this before, every mouthful was a delightful surprise, moreish, light, yet satisfying. Taquerias were equally mouthwatering. We ate delicious

meaty deep fried baja fish on a bed of red slaw, with lime mayo and pickles; the pinkest, freshest seared tuna, with mango, lime and chile salsa and avocado sauce; surprisingly light refried beans, with smashed avocado, cheese, cooling sour cream and a fresh salsa; and sticky slow-cooked beef short rib, so tender it fell off the fork, served with beer glazed shallots. We also had a side of ‘Ancient Grain Salad’, which was quinoa, vegetables and mixed seeds with feta. I shall try to recreate it at home because it was so good, yet so healthy. We finished with a tongue-tingling palate cleanser of Margarita Sorbet. Jive Kitchen is a tantalising meander down a Mexican street, with a friendly hand to guide the way. REVIEW: LUCY OHSTEN

Choise cuts As a butcher, it's a question I get asked all the time, “So, what is the best cut of meat and where is the best place to get it?” Well, in my opinion you get the best cuts of meat form the very best suppliers here at Paddocks. Howver, the choice of cut is really quite subjective, depends on your own personal tastes. Here’s my advice: The ideal Easter roast A leg of lamb for Easter Sunday is very traditional and for good reason. Spring lamb is available from February through to early Summer. You want firm, slightly pink meat with a velvety texture. As the meat ages it becomes darker in colour.

Great value People have come to undervalue chicken but a free range chicken is hard to beat and still good value for a roast dinner. Unsung hero Hats off to Tom Seaman our local beef supplier from near Wymondham, and his award-winning beef. He’s only 26 years old and already at the top of his game. My favourite Has to be a rib of beef! It’s not cheap but, when cooked properly, is exceptional.

Please ask any of our experienced butchers for advice, they’ll be only too happy to help you find the best choice for your requirements.

pring is in the air, with lighter evenings and spring flowers in bloom we all start to think of lazy Sundays, and al fresco gettogethers. While we cannot predict whether the sun will shine this summer, we can at least ensure that we have the perfect glass of wine in our hand for any occasion, more often than not it is a chilled glass of rosé. The heartland of rosé is the Côtes de Provence in France, although sales of equally attractive rosés from the around the world are also increasing. Also making an impact this year are superb wines from England, which put it into the top rank of rosé-producing countries. One of my personal favourites – perfect for drinking on its own or with a plate of freshly grilled lemon sole – is Gris Blanc, Gérard Bertrand IGP Pays d’Oc 2015, Grenache Gris. A pale pink, this is a wonderfully pure, fresh flavoured wine, with vibrant fruit aromatics. The fruity characters are echoed on the palate, which has a lovely minerality and a zesty finish. For more robust dishes, try our Spanish Bobel rosé from La Mancha in Spain, with dark warm summer fruits and cherry under-notes; a perfect match with prawns, seafood or wood-grilled tuna. With summer on our mind we are very much looking forward to our next wine evening, tasting an organic range of wines from Sicily and some of the stunning wines from Southern Italy. NOT JUST FOR VEGANS

The couple are passionate about changing people’s perceptions of what vegan food is and to this end their innovative products have been equally well-received by non-vegans too. Offering tasty bites such as soysage rolls, burgers and shepherd’s pie along with whole array of delicious cakes and sweet treats has helped to put Tofurei on the map for customers from far and wide. “We are getting a lot of good feedback from people who eat meat,” said Steve. “Burgers are the latest addition to our menu and people say they prefer them over meat burgers. I don’t know anywhere else locally that offers the same sort of vegan deli counter that we do.” In order to make soya products on the premises the couple invested in importing special

machinery from China allowing them to produce between 12 and 14 kilos of tofu a day. The shop is now open from 10am-6pm, six days a week and is steadily building a regular clientele who pop in for the daily lunch meal deals or a cuppa and cake on their way home. Steve, who previously worked in education and as a business analyst, said: “I love being in the shop. I have never worked before in a place where people come up and shake your hand and thank you for being there.” REVIEW: SHEREE HANNA

HE RUNAWAY success of one of the city’s newest café-cum-takeaway food shops, Tofurei, at 12 Pottergate, which specialises in vegan food, is already fuelling plans to expand the business. The brainchild of partners Steve Lepper and Jenny McCann, Tofurei is also believed to be the UK’s first micro soya dairy and tofu producer. Demand for products sold in their compact outlet has prompted the couple to start looking for additional, larger premises. “Since opening last October, we have been thrilled by the reaction to our products and services,” said Steve. “We are looking for outside facilities we can use for production so we can expand the range of products we already offer and also use that space for our planned, soya-making workshops. “We are trying to keep our feet on the ground as people are asking us about wholesaling our products and opening branches elsewhere. “However, we want to do it carefully because above all we want to keep the quality of our products, so it’s important that any new products are fully tested before we going on wider sale.”

FINGER LICKING WORKS OF ART!

W

E ALL LOVE CAKE, what’s not to love?! But Imogen Davison of Sugar Buttons takes bespoke cake-making to a new sugar high. Her stunning creations are edible works of art, each one lovingly designed and created to deliver a ‘wow’ and a ‘pow’ factor, whatever the occasion. Imogen’s background is design and teaching, but after years of working with paper and textiles, and a bit of cake making on the side, she decided to give up her job as Head of Art at Caister High School and focus all her creativity on Sugar Buttons. So how does she make the delicious look so gorgeous? “My aim is to make cakes that are memorable and very personal,” says Imogen. “Wedding cakes

92

are a big part of my business – some traditional, some very innovative – and other celebrations too like birthdays and anniversaries. Cupcakes are also a very popular option. “I love experimenting with different flavour combinations and this is often a very personal thing. Cakes and cupcakes are flavoured with fillings such as zesty lemon curd or decadent dulce de leche toffee and topped with a swirl of the lightest buttercream, cheesecake frosting, glossy poured fondant or rich chocolate ganache.” As well as creating these mouthwatering cakes, Imogen also runs a range of creative art, craft, textile and cake classes. “I found I really missed the buzz of teaching a roomful of eager

students, so I’ve transferred my art teaching skills and knowledge to working with cake. “The aim of my classes is to offer something very niche. For example, I show how to use the more arty skills such as painting onto cakes or working with edible paper craft.” Imogen also holds cake decorating parties for both kids and adults “It’s a fun and creative idea for a birthday or hen party, or even a creative evening with friends.” As if this wasn’t enough on her plate, Imogen is also an inventor. After many frustrating years suffering the icing sugar clouds caused by food mixers, Imogen designed the Sugar Buttons Universal Mixer Guard, and it’s fast becoming a must-have item for cake makers. “It works like a dream, keeps the kitchen clean and it looks very pretty too,” she says. Sounds like Sugar Buttons is hitting everyone’s sweet spot! For more information about Sugar Buttons, and where to buy the Universal Mixer Guard, go to sugarbuttonscreative.co.uk

Sunny Afternoon Sunny Afternoon tells the story of The Kinks whose raw musical talent and energetic on-stage approach transfixed a nation. Their take-no-prisoners approach came between the austere conservative Fifties and the in-yourface Sixties, but what is the back-story of the band and what happened after their initial success? These questions are explored in the smashhit show which won four Olivier Awards and features some of the group’s best-loved songs including You Really Got Me, Waterloo Sunset and Lola. “Sunny Afternoon is a coming-of-age story about sibling rivalry, a changing society, the April/May 2017 Vanilla

Woman In Black First performed in 1987, it is the second-longest running show in the West End, after Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap. Obsessed with a curse which he believes has been cast over him and his family, a lawyer engages a sceptical young actor to help him tell his tale and exorcise the fear that grips his soul. His memories transport us back to a world of eerie marshes and moaning winds, as the pair uncover the ghostly origins of The Woman In Black herself. Based on the book by Norfolk writer Susan Hill, The Woman In Black also became a horror movie in 2014 starring Daniel Radcliffe. Tickets £7-£24.50

Gill Bushnell House of Colour Personal Stylist

My City Life

What do you love about Norwich?

Gill Bushnell has been a House of Colour Consultant for 8 years. She lives in Norwich and is married to hair stylist Phillip Bushnell, who is senior partner at John Olivers.

How do colours effect the way we look and feel?

I know that when I wear colours that suit me I look better, so I feel better too. The effect of colour is very profound, it can bring about an emotional response and raise or lower our mood. We

What are your hidden gems in the city?

often like a colour but we don’t think of wearing it, so my role is to find the colours that best suit a person’s colouring and help them to create a wardrobe that is 100% right for them, so they can look and feel great, whatever the occasion. What do you like to do when you are not working?

My husband and I are both passionate about cricket, and we have travelled all over the world to watch it. It’s a fascinating game. I also love the theatre, opera and music. But if you think I sound a bit highbrow, I should say that I also enjoy chick flicks, reading rubbish and watching box sets on Sky!

I love to wander around The Lanes in Norwich, the little back streets, because there are so many lovely little shops and boutiques, and something fascinating around every corner. Where are your favourite places to eat in Norwich?

Our two favourites in the city are The Last Wine Bar and The Roof Garden. Both restaurants not only have fabulous food, but their menu changes seasonally and they use local independent suppliers for their ingredients. There are also some superb places to eat in North Norfolk which are very popular with the locals, not just the tourists. That’s the sign of a great restaurant. n Contact Gill for your personal consultation 07805 876619 or gill.bushnell@houseofcolour.co.uk

What drew you to becoming a House of Colour consultant? I used to work in HR for Aviva, and as part of the redundancy package for senior staff we offered them a colour and styling session to give them confidence in the next step of their career. I’d already had my colours done, so I had a great wardrobe that worked very well and I found the whole process fascinating. Some time later I went with my sister-in-law to have her colours done with House of Colour and she told me that being a colour consultant would be the perfect job for me. So I started thinking about it seriously, did a lot of research and it just felt like a natural progression. She was right, it is the ideal career for me, because I can still use my HR skills to help people and facilitate change, but in a different way.

I’m from the North East and we used to come here when I was young to visit my uncle. So I moved to Norwich because I loved it from an early age. The pace of life is peaceful, calm and gentle, and the history of the city with the cathedral and castle is superb. The coast around Norfolk is lovely too, so unspoilt, with big skies and no crowds. But there is also plenty going on here, with the arts and live music, so there is something for everyone.
