What is Soroptimism?
NEW HEAD CHEF FOR THE WESTLETON CROWN The Westleton Crown, Suffolk hotel and restaurant, is pleased to announce the appointment of a new Head Chef, James Finch– familiar to the inn’s loyal guests and diners as he is returning to The Westleton Crown’s kitchen after four years. James worked at The Crown for two years as Sous Chef prior to moving to the popular Sibton White Horse, where he started his Head Chef career and won the prestigious Good Food Guide’s ‘Pub of the Year 2015’ award. James was born and bred in Suffolk and graduated from the Norwich City College, he is currently living in Westleton village. His great knowledge, real love of the area and its local produce shows in his cooking and menus – traditional, British and fresh.
The name Soroptimist was coined from the Latin soror meaning sister, and optima meaning best. Soroptimist is perhaps best interpreted as ‘the best for women’. From the founding of the first Soroptimist club in Oakland, California, in 1921, through to the present day where over 3000 clubs are flourishing in 130 countries throughout the world, Soroptimists have continued to strive to achieve ‘the best for women’ in every sphere of their lives. Ipswich and District Soroptimist Club is one
of 265 in the UK and they meet on the second Wednesday of each month in the historic surroundings of the Ipswich and Suffolk Club in Northgate Street, Ipswich. Their fundraising is for local projects to help women and girls in our area via specific initiatives. Club members contribute their skills and talents and work
together to meet the objects of Soroptimism in an effective and relevant way for women today to make a real difference to the lives of women and girls. We are all too aware of the commitments on our time as busy women but for those Vanilla readers who would like to make a difference and care about the issues facing women and girls locally, nationally and internationally, joining a Soroptimist Club is very worthwhile. If you want more information about the organisation go to www.sigbi.org and for more about the Ipswich & District Club go to www.sigbi.org/ipswichand-district or email either Pat on pat_roy16@hotmail.com or Jackie on jacalan@btopenworld.com.
LOCAL AUTHOR GETS PUBLISHING OFFER Local Author, Laurie Ellingham from Stratford St Mary, has achieved what many writers can only dream about with the release of a debut novel The Reluctant Celebrity out this summer. The Reluctant Celebrity was previously selfpublished as an ebook, but after quickly achieving chart success was picked up by London publishing house Austin Macaulay. The novel is available as a paperback in Waterstones Ipswich as well as an ebook on Amazon.. “It's every author’ss dream that they will picked up by a publisher," explains Laurie, "it's a tough and very crowded market. There are thousands of books out there trying to do the same thing.”

2015 MODEL SEARCH IS OVER!
Meet Belle Rogers the winner of our Face of Suffolk 2015 Competition
13
Sam Simpson from JMM explains why Belle is a winner:
“I know Suffolk girls are gorgeous, but Belle has exceeded all my expectations. 18 years old and 5.10 tall, with a gorgeous face, great hair and amazing body, she’s the whole package! She’s already been snapped up by the top American super-agency, Wilhelmina’s, who’ve just opened an office in London.” “But it’s not just about her great looks, she has the personality and drive to go with it. On the shoot she charmed everyone, the team just loved her, she was a natural!” “For the time being, Belle has put her veterinary studies at Otley College on hold and will model full-time in London. She’s already been chosen as the new face of Homespun Cashmere for their A/W15 collection. Both Wilhelmina and JMM are confident of her future success, particularly with high-end commercial clients and magazines and with a bit of luck, it won’t be long before she travels to the other Wilhelmina offices in New York, Miami and LA.”

T BERRIDGES we are very proud of our business which has been established in Dial lane now for over twenty years. We are very lucky in that being an independent retailer we can indulge our passions in respect of the jewellery we stock. We love to source the unusual and are always keen to show gemstones that many mainstream jewellers ignore, either because they fail to understand the product or deem it not to be commercial. This is a TALK big mistake in our view. JEWELS I have previously spoken about pearls and their resurgence in popularity. We find them fascinating and we believe we stock the best range in town. But another gemstone that always excites us is the opal and amount of intensity in the we are pleased to have found red spectrum – its saturation an excellent supplier for these throughout the stone – and the magical stones. presence of any bald sections or cracks. PALS ARE FORMED from quartz and hydrated silica and often contain as much as 35 per cent water. The colours that flash from an opal originate from the many silica spheres below the surface, they refract the white light into the colours of the rainbow giving a visual feast of fire and lightening to the eye. When valuing opals the main factors to consider are the

Whilst traditionally the finest opals have originated from Australia, we have found that the deposits being mined in Ethiopia are of exceptional quality having large crystals showing a fabulous play of colour at a sensible price. We have teamed up with Hans Richard Becker who is a German jewellery designer who specialises in precious stones particularly opals we have in stock some beautiful rings, earrings and pendant mounted in 18 carat gold with diamonds and priced from £1100. “It was a shock to learn that my ex-husband may still be able to lay claim on my finances years after our divorce”
Making sure you’ve secured your personal finances following divorce OUR PROBLEM: When my husband, James, and I decided to get divorced, we knew we wanted to do it amicably – so much so that we decided we’d ‘do it ourselves’ sorting out all of the paperwork, as well as splitting our house, belongings and savings. It had been a year since our decree absolute and I thought that chapter of my life was well behind me, but then I read an article that made me think again. The article was about a green energy tycoon, Dale Vince. He had divorced his wife years ago but she was now seeking a financial claim against him, even though he had earned his money well after their decree absolute had been issued. All because they hadn’t sealed off the financial paperwork when their divorce went through. REBECCA, IPSWICH
28
HOW IT WAS SOLVED:
I’m not expecting to ever be in the same financial situation as Dale Vince, but I knew we hadn’t completed any official paperwork about the agreements we’d made regarding finances. I had just assumed that, as we didn’t have children, once we were divorced, we would have no claim over anything to do with each other’s lives. My elderly aunt had just told me that I stand to inherit a substantial amount of money when she passes away, as she has no children and no other Vanilla August/September 2015
REAL LIVES
nieces or nephews. I knew my family would be really upset if James were to benefit from her estate, especially after so much water had passed under the bridge. So I decided I’d better seek some legal advice to see whether the divorce that we’d arranged ourselves sealed off our financial affairs too.
I
DID AN online search for local solicitors and found Barker Gotelee, who I knew a friend had recently used to write her will. She said they were easy to speak to and reasonably priced. I’d also seen that they offered initial consultations free of charge, so I gave them a call. I arranged to pop in and see one of the family law solicitors, Amanda Erskine, for a chat about my worries. The office was easy to get to and I was able to whizz there and back easily within my lunch break, so I didn’t feel it had cost me much time either.
A
MANDA EXPLAINED that my concerns were valid and that, with the rise of the DIY divorce, I wasn’t alone in my situation. She said that many people concentrate on their divorce paperwork, without realising that it’s advisable to address your financial paperwork in parallel. A quick visit to your solicitor could help tie up any missed angles, such as this one, that could be missed without specific legal training. I went back a week or so later and Amanda and I went through all the divorce paperwork that August/September 2015 Vanilla
James and I had put together, as well as the informal agreements we’d made about our finances. Amanda explained that the longer the gap between separating and arranging a consent order – the financial document we needed to secure our own situations – the wider the financial paper trails become, and so the more complex it could be to reach agreement. But as it had only been a year since our divorce, and as we’d also documented everything fairly well, she said this should be a straightforward matter to sort out. Amanda wrote to James and then drafted a consent order, in accordance with the original informal agreements we’d made the year before. Amanda sent the draft to James, suggesting
he may wish to get it checked over by his own solicitor. James agreed with everything on the draft, so Amanda arranged for the finalised document to be signed separately by the two of us. Once we had both completed a separate form showing our current financial position, Amanda arranged for everything to be sent to the court to be looked at and approved.
T
HE WHOLE process only took a couple of months and, as it was a simple case, I just paid a flat fee for the amazing service and peace of mind I received. Just as my friend recommended Barker Gotelee to me, I’ll be sending anyone in my situation to Amanda now. ■
We’re here to help We all need legal services from time to time. Whether you need advice or assistance relating to divorce, or for any other family law matter, our specialists, Amanda Erskine and and Nicola Furmston, are on hand to help.

or those of you who haven’t been, Stonham Barns Leisure and Retail Village is situated in the picturesque Stonham Aspal, just off the A14, east of Stowmarket. Although Stonham Barns is renowned for its familyfriendly attractions, such as the Birds of Prey, the Owl Sanctuary and Crazy Golf, for us ‘grownups’ there’s also an amazing variety of other outlets to explore. The majority of the facilities are open 7 days a week and so Stonham Barns has fast become a little oasis of shops and boutiques, providing a raft of unexpected products. There’s Glitzy Glamour, an upmarket but affordable jewellery and accessories store, the recently opened Ché Zoë, which sells premium body and spa products and Hot Tub Village that sell a range of hot tubs and spas beautifully displayed in their showroom. There’s some great clothing on offer here too, especially if you’re not in the mood to battle the town centre traffic. Kittys Jules Boutique provides a stunning array of elegant women’s clothing and accessories. For the chaps, there’s Man About Town – a friendly, stylish menswear

The shop has been open for just over a year and has on offer unique brands that include a variety of classic brogues and beautifully made shirts, as well as an extensive formal menswear hire service. Beauty therapist and Owner, Debbie Snashall says she’s seen the Stonham complex gradually build up over the years and now “there’s plenty there for her clients to enjoy, pre or post treatment!” For sustenance, there’s a beautiful little 5-star restaurant on hand, Sweet and Savoury, with indoor and outdoor seating and delicious food at affordable prices. Everywhere is pet friendly too – there’s a dog training and grooming centre so you can bring your pooch along for the fun! With free entrance and parking and most of the area pedestrianised, you have a safe, family friendly space in which to relax and enjoy the shops and attractions.

TONHAM BARNS has furthered the amount of outlets in the last few years, (8 new shops have opened in the last year) with a total of 45 shops in the complex, from a garden centre and tack shop to a reptile and aquatics outlet. Owner, Alan Forward has plans to continue the growth of the Retail village in the months to come. There are several shop spaces currently being developed, a new children’s play area under construction, along with a new golf course. Alongside the village there’s a well-established Holiday Park nestled within the idyllic Suffolk

How to choose the right school
If asked how to go about choosing the right school for your child what would you say? It’s a question that you should be asking yourself if your child is of schooling age, or is already in school and making the move from primary to secondary. And in asking the question it will throw up a myriad of additional questions that together can make for something of a mine field if you are doing it for the first time. The first question to ask is: what sort of school did I attend and was it right for me? It may sound contrived but looking back at your own schooling can lead you to make some informed decisions. After all if you went to a school that was under funded or under resourced you wouldn’t realistically expect your child to August/September 2015 Vanilla
go there would you? Neil Tetley, Headmaster of Woodbridge School says, “Rather like buying a house, one gets a feel for whether a school is right. Of course there is a rational judgement to be made, by for example comparing results, but schools are very human institutions and the
emotional judgement is just as important. Parents are always recommended to visit the school and chat to pupils and staff there to get a feeling of the diversity and quality of education.” In many cases, you will feel drawn to certain schools because of local reputation, but do keep an open mind and try not to be too influenced by your own school experience – the whole educational offer has changed dramatically in the last two years let alone the last 25 years. Most of us have been out of the schooling arena for some time and things have changed quite a lot so it is only reasonable to expect that nothing is necessarily as it was when you were at school. So make a checklist with your partner and work down that list to make an informed choice. Also don’t just pick one school.
Why I love my school... “I live just five minutes’ walk away from school. I’ve joined the new girls’ cricket team, which is really fun, but I also enjoy hockey, rounders and netball with my friends. The hockey and girls’ cricket takes place at the new Rushmere centre. It’s great because there are so many pitches and everyone is very friendly. I go to jewellery club, where I made an acrylic and metal bracelet, it’s co-curricular so it’s not on the syllabus – the teachers help me to make what I design.”
Zoya Kwatra, Year 8, Ipswich School

The Education issue You would be surprised at just how unbiased and informative children can be about their schooling In your area alone there may be three, four or five schools that would be suitable for your child, so it is only right that you take the time to inspect them all, and judge them on their individual merits. Just because you like the look of one primary or secondary school doesn’t mean that all of the others in your catchment area are the same. SCHOOL VISITS
Visit the schools if you can. Use the opportunities presented by school open days to see what the school has to offer, or if you prefer, make an appointment yourself and take the time to tour the school with a senior teacher or head teacher who should be more than happy to answer all of your questions and show you parts of the school that open days might not allow. Talk to your child as they will almost certainly know children who attend the schools on your list. Find out from them what their friends think or ask their friends directly. You would be surprised at just how unbiased
36
and informative children can be about their schooling. Ask about the facilities and after school activities the schools have to offer. Remember that school is not only a place of learning but also a place where your child will learn the rudimentary skills of communication and how to mix with others. Speak to your local authority and ask about league tables and exam results, you can tell a lot
from the league tables and exam results as to how well a school performs. If necessary make a shortlist of schools that you think may fit the bill and ask to visit them again. Sometimes a second look can throw up things that you may have missed first time round or that just didn’t spark your interest at the time. Most schools will be happy to do this. Not only does it show you have your child’s well being at heart, but it also allows you to familiarise yourself with the staff along the way. Nicholas Weaver, Headmaster of Ipswich School points out: “There’s no substitute for coming to have a look at the school in action. For most parents it’s a long time since they’ve been in a secondary school classroom, so a tour of the school when we’re hard at work on a normal day will provide a great insight into what we do.”
Why I love my school... “When I walk around my school it really feels like home to me, but I also feel excited at the prospect of all the opportunity that's open to me. I love acting and because there is a brilliant drama department and a fully equipped theatre, I get to pursue my passion. Woodbridge has helped me to become more confident. It is the supportive atmosphere of lessons, the superb opportunities for performing in public and the chance to lead sports teams or CCF sections that builds this confidence. I find the School both nurturing and stretching which I think must be the best preparation for life.”

SCHOOLS
Make notes – and lots of them – don’t be afraid to ask your guide to repeat some information you may think relevant. After all you only have a certain amount of time to tour the school. “Children need to be resilient, resourceful and have questioning minds. When touring schools, consider what qualities the teachers and students hold. Will the environment build confidence and inspire a lifelong enjoyment of learning? Encourage your child to ask questions about their interests and how the enrichment programme can extend their learning and extra-curricular enjoyment! A happy fulfilled child will be a successful learner.” says Oona Carlin, Head Teacher at Ipswich High School for Girls. Observe how the teachers and pupils interact if you can and if you can manage to coincide your visit with the end of the school day don’t be afraid to speak to parents who have come to collect their children. If you explain your reasons for asking them questions they will be more than happy to help. After all they have been through the same process themselves at some stage. And finally, and perhaps most important of all, take on board your child’s comments and opinions. After all it is they who will be spending most of their time at school. If it looks right

Why I love my school... “I like being at an all girls' school as it is less noisy and rough! I have kind friends and we get mixed up a lot in classes so we get to know everyone, which is good. The teachers make the lessons fun and involve you all the time. There is lots of choice for clubs and I really like the lunches! I love sport here and the facilities are great.” Zanna Agar, Year 5 pupil at Ipswich
High School. She joined in Year 4 from a mixed primary school.
and feels right, then it more than likely will be, but if your child isn’t going to be happy there then the whole process can only end in tears. CHOOSING A PRIVATE SCHOOL
Many private schools are selective, basing their admissions criteria on highly competitive standards. Others, however, are non-selective academically, making it easier to gain a place. If you choose an academically selective private secondary school, there are tried-andtested ways to ensure that your child gets the place he or she wants. It’s no good leaving it all up to chance; the key is early preparation. Remember, your child will be competing against children who have been in the private system practically since birth. They – and their parents – already know which hoops to jump through. It’s up to you
to find out what they are, and to prepare your child to glide through them as smoothly as possible. Most private schools base their admissions criteria on a combination of an exam and an interview, and often this interview includes the parents as well. Preparing your child to pass the exam is perhaps the most important thing that you as a parent can do. But remember, schools aren’t expecting the finished product – they’re just after children with great potential. So, in conclusion, finding the right school for your child is one of the most important tasks you as a parent will perform during their formative years. If you make the right choice and use your checklist then you will find your child will be happy, content and flourish, which is one of the greatest gifts you as a parent will ever receive ■ For more useful information on choosing a school visit www. gettherightschool.co.uk

N
EW TO Maison Talbooth comes the luxury aromatherapy brand – Aromatherapy Associates, producers of therapeutic-grade bath, body and skincare products to be found in exclusive hotels and spas worldwide. Vanilla were invited to sample one of their bespoke aromatherapy massages and what better time than on a Sunday morning following a hard night of partying. A consultation with the Aromatherapy Associates trained therapist kicks off my 90-minute session as she attempts to devise a treatment plan for me according to how I (well, my body) is feeling today. De-hydrated – check; stiffness in joints – check; disturbed sleep –

check; lacking energy – check. I sniff various essential oils and am told to pick the strongest, most intense aroma (apparently this can change from one day to the next) and my prescription is decided upon, ‘an intensive muscle release massage’. To start, Helen my therapist, prepares the oils while I sip some iced water and make myself comfortable in the chic surroundings of The Treatment Rooms at Maison Talbooth. She lets me inhale some hypnotically mind-calming frankincense oil, then begins an intensive and restorative massage that works deep into the skin to ease tight, aching muscles. Swedish and cross muscle fibre massage techniques are combined with the internationally acclaimed
or an hour I have my body massaged top-to-toe, the focus is very much on pressure points. Carefully applied pressures stimulate the nervous system, relieve muscular tension, and lymphatic drainage helps encourage a healthy circulation. Feet, hands, scalp and face are included and it makes all the difference – it’s like having a body massage combined with some 'Indian Head' and reflexology thrown in for good measure. By the end of the treatment I feel relaxed and recharged and my dry, de-hydrated skin feels as soft as butter plus I have an unearned healthy glow too. I’m instructed to drink lots of water, take it easy for the rest of the day and leave the oils to work their magic for a further few hours. Not a bad way to spend a Sunday! TOP TIP: As you would expect, essential oils are used on the scalp as well as the body so your hair may not look ‘date ready’ by the end of the treatment! Full body massage £70. 2½-3 hours and is actually incredibly relaxing, I eventually nodded off listening to the soulful music playing in the background. I came round from my nap and couldn’t believe the transformation, my short, straight eyelashes looked amazing, full, very natural and extremely glamorous! I was over the moon especially when Beth explained on no account should I apply mascara to my top lashes. I hate putting mascara on as it takes so long to get a worthwhile effect – this will save me so much time when I’m getting ready go out.

AFTER-CARE INSTRUCTIONS
Russian eyelash extensions at Image Salon
I
hadn’t had lash extensions for about two years, so when I heard about the effect the new advanced Russian eyelashes gave I was tempted and excited to try them out. Lucky for me Image Beauty Salon in Ipswich asked me to come along to sample the treatment. Beth, my therapist, explained the process and the benefits Russian eyelash extensions have over traditional ones. So here goes: Russian lashes originated in Russia (no surprise there!) and have recently made a breakthrough in the US and Europe. The multi-lash technique
48
involves multiple extensions to one single natural eyelash, to create depth, volume and texture. It’s a new technique that uses even lighter and thinner lashes to add multi dimensional volume. The stylist will apply 2-6 extensions per lash or 200-700 extensions per eye. This cannot be done with classic lashes as they are too heavy to have more than one extension to each lash. The lashes are voluminous, soft and very natural feeling – they come in different lengths and curl. They create a beautiful, full yet natural look, very glamorous! The treatment takes around
1. Do not wash eyes or shower for 24 hours after lash application. Avoid crying, sweat or steam for 24 hours. 2. Do not swim or spa for 48 hours, to allow adequate time for bonding. 3. Avoid rubbing and pulling your lashes. 4. Avoid oil based products. Oils loosen the bond. Apply eye cream sparingly avoiding the lash line area. 5. Do not use an eyelash curler on your extensions. 6. Image recommend eyelash touch-up appointments every 10-14 days, to fill in the areas where the natural lashes have fallen out and new lashes are growing in. 7. Do not pull off your extensions. Have them removed gently by your therapist. Full set £85 / 15 minute in-fills £12.50/ ½ hour £25 / 1 hour £50 Visit www.imagesalon.co.uk or call 01473 222188 to book.

FTER a summer of seemingly endless exams what could be better than a relaxing spa break for mother and daughter. We were warmly welcomed by the lovely staff at Ufford Park with a brochure full of fabuloussounding treatments – massages, manicures, mud baths, pedicures and wraps – and as we sipped our gin and tonic (and diet Coke) and pondered which indulgent treat we would take we could already feel the tension slipping into the distance past. The thermal spa at Ufford Park is a heavenly gem and the perfect setting for our mini-break from reality. We loved the Mineral Grotto, a gorgeous steam room filled with relaxing aromas and the Soft Sauna which promised not the stifling hard heat of some but a slightly more subtle warmth that was bearable for longer but

just as enjoyable. After each hot experience we showered in the peppermint-fragranced rainforest or under a cloud of cool citrus mist. A fountain of crushed ice is on hand for those who like to really feel the chill after their hot room time. There’s plenty of space too for sheer time-stopping lolling, laughing and chatting here. There’s a relaxing room of beach beds and bean bags with a star-lit ceiling where guests can lie back and read the glossy magazines, relax in their fluffy white robes, sipping endless mint teas or cool water. Each guest to the spa is given a little parcel of wonderfully scented bath salts which can be used in the mosaic pools of the foot spas or for a full body blast there’s the magnificently huge hydro-pool which really has to be
experienced, with its full jets and fountains in its bubbly beauty. We were treated to the signature ‘all about you’ half hour facial, utterly indulgent in gorgeous candle-light and then a fabulous Khanya of Africa Massage – a holistic approach to well-being through a deeply relaxing and re-energising whole body treatment based on traditional African methods. This ‘mystical African ritual using maracas, marula oil and crystals to revitalise the body and restore balance’ certainly returned the zen to my post-exam pre-prom princess. We emerged refreshed, reinvigorated and revitalised, and glowing from head to toe. REVIEW: LOUISE CULLEN

Summer Body Prep Summer is here which means it’s time to bare all, well almost. Put the prep work in now and you won’t have to panic when it’s time to hit the beach…
W
E ALL LIKE to think of summer beauty as lowmaintenance; dishevelled beachy hair, sun-kissed, radiant skin and nothing more than SPF and a few coats of mascara. Wrong. As much as we love this season it is the time of year when you have to put in the prep work, and we’re talking de-fuzzing, tanning, polishing, scrubbing, the list goes on (men don’t know how lucky they are). Put in the time and you’ll thank yourself for it later, when the dreaded bikini moment isn’t quite so dreaded. Silky-soft smooth skin and perfectlypolished fingers and toes really are your summer must-haves. While you could barricade yourself in your bathroom and spend a day doing DIY pampering, we strongly suggest
you hand your body over to the experts who will do the job for you. Plus, you’ll not only look good but feel good after a spot of ‘me’ time. Luckily for you there are loads of spas and salons offering ‘summer prep’ packages which are not to be missed, where you can enjoy multiple treatments at a saving.

VANILLA FAVOURITE, Bathsheba Spa in Woodbridge, is offering just that with an offer that will leave you looking like a bronzed goddess. Choose from two treatments for £55 or three for £75, with a choice of a Gel Manicure, Gel Pedicure, Bikini Wax, Half Leg and Underarm Wax, REN Express Facial, Full Body Scrub, Eyebrow Shape and Lash Tint,
Pretty New Feet and XEN TAN. With their award-winning brands including REN and Jessica and talented therapists this really is a five star offering. Go on, treat yourself… BY ALICE MANNING
3 TIPS TO MAXIMISE YOUR TREATMENTS 1. Buy the nail varnish that is used in your treatment for touch-ups. 2. Maintain your golden glow with a gradual self-tan applied every other day and avoid oily moisturisers that will ‘lift’ your tan. 3. Invest in a cooling Aloe Vera gel for post-wax soothing.

YOUR NAIL PROBLEMS SOLVED
...by Sue Carter and her team at Image HOW SHOULD I FILE MY NAILS?
Most clients file their own nails at home in between treatments, however if you do not use the right technique you are at risk of damaging your nails. Most people think that going back and forth with a nail file, rather like a saw, is the best way. If you do this with a strong file then you are likely to cause your nails to split and peel, which in turn will weaken them significantly. Keep your filing to one direction. HOW DO I MAINTAIN NICE LOOKING CUTICLES?
The cuticle is an extremely delicate layer of skin that serves an important purpose, to prevent fungal and bacterial infection in the nail beds. Some people think that cuticles look better when
54
cut and polished, but because the cuticle is the living part of the nail plate it is much better to push them back. Using a good cuticle oil will help to keep them hydrated, promoting a healthier, stronger nail plate.
infection and illness. Try using a nail strengthening product which contains protein and calcium, to help your nails grow harder, longer and stronger. If your nails look good then hopefully you will be less likely to bite them.
I CAN’T STOP NAIL BITING!
WHY ARE MY NAILS DAMAGED?
You may bite your nails because of stress, nerves, hunger or boredom. Many people also find it tempting to bite their nails if one breaks, instead of using a nail file or clippers. Biting nails not only severely weakens them but is unsanitary. Our fingers touch a lot of things during the course of the day and no matter how much we wash them, germs and bacteria will still accumulate under the nails. So when you put your nails into your mouth, you are putting yourselves at risk of
If you experience your nail gel lifting after a few weeks do not be tempted to pick and peel it off! Your nails have a protective layer of keratin cells that act as a shield, so when you pick off your gel (or any other overlay or extension) you are in danger of removing the top layer of the nail, which may injure the matrix and lead to permanent, irreversible damage. To keep your nails strong always have your gels professionally removed n Vanilla August/September 2015

Natural cool: Jute rug £28.65

2. #fashionforyourfloor How to make a wise flooring purchase We understand that buying a carpet is a big purchase for the home, so we suggest that you bear in mind a few hints to keep YOU fully armed and ready to get the best from your floors. Ask for advice
It is your home and is used completely differently to someone else’s home. So what works for one may not be suitable for you. You may love a particular range but it may be impractical for you.
Discover natural tones: Thomas Witter Discovery carpet £36.96 sqm
Beware of fads
There are always trends in every industry but also there are the stable ‘classic’ basics. These will give you the best return on investment over time. Trends are cool and can look great initially, but can quickly go out of fashion. Be natural
Natural colours and tones in carpets will make a smaller room look much bigger and friendly. Or a larger room more light, open and inviting.
Pair with wood. Thomas Witter Innovation carpet £35.70 sqm
Try to work to a theme – use woods, wicker, flora and fauna effects. It is subtle but very effective and of course everything links back to nature. A popular addition to any room – especially the Sisal rug £37.35 kitchen, den or family room – is Seagrass, Sisal or Jute. Fashionable. Practical. Cool. But here is an important piece of advice: never use Seagrass on stairs or heavy-use rooms. It can be dangerous as well as impractical. Rugs are the way forward! All carpets shown are available through Archway Carpets. Sisal and jute rugs from Archway, photographed at Happiness Store, Woodbridge.

Young Producers at the forefront of East Anglia’s home-grown produce
T
HIS YEAR, the Aldeburgh Food & Festival will be showcasing exciting new talent from the Young Producers Group, a new band of young and passionate food entrepreneurs; all committed to putting East Anglia on the map and showcasing the region’s food credentials to the rest of the nation. To celebrate their Sourced Locally initiative the East of England Co-op brought together some of its young producers including Alder Tree ice cream, Gnaw Chocolate, Lane Farm meats, Wolff-Evans & Sons, Barbecube, Crush Foods and Krusty Loaf Bakery for a photoshoot. Summing up the drive behind these companies, Matt Legon of Gnaw Chocolate says: “We

decided to develop a quirky, innovative chocolate brand to spice up the chocolate industry. We bring an element of youth and fun to our business, whilst having a clear future goal.”
B
RIGHT AND determined, Harry Wolff-Evans, director of Wolff-Evans & Sons scotch eggs said: “With my background as a chef, and then in fashion, it was a brave jump to re-locate back to Suffolk. However, my father and I had identified a gap in the market for a new fun, fashionable food product – handmade soft centred scotch eggs – so we decided to go for it. A ‘roller-coaster’
decision which has resulted in an award winning, fast growing business which has been incredibly exciting and I can’t wait to see what the future has in store.” Lane Farm began farming in 1987 and now run the business with their daughters Rebecca and Sarah, who play a central role. Rebecca comments: “It was a natural step to follow my parents into the family business and I hope that eventually my future children will follow in my own footsteps.” Keep an eye out for these delicious local brands in your local Co-Op and watch out for them nationally too! ■

PTLY HOUSED in the old Master Brewer’s House in the grounds of the old Unicorn brewery, a stone’s throw from the waterfront, The Townhouse is a super friendly wine bar that twists into two tiers of eating areas, with a staircase over the bar, an internal balcony and walls literally lined with wine bottles of every shade. There’s a warm welcome from manager Georgie and her merry band of waiting staff and candles flicker in the windows giving a cosy glow to a summer’s evening. There’s a great choice of gins for your tonic while perusing the menu and much to choose, including specials,
in a resolutely best-of-British fashion. But the wine is tempting from on high above on the walls and is even served in the smallest measures: “tiny” being the smallest glass at £2.50, before small, medium and large. But if you are more minded for quantity on your night out then bottles, from their huge list, are really reasonably priced from £15. Starters are hearty and wholesome. The mixed sharing platter was a feast – piles of parma ham, slithers of salami, lashing of smoked salmon, huge king prawns, roasted peppers, roast courgettes, cornichons and a delicious tapenade dip and the Pan Vanilla August/September 2015
FOOD
Seared Scallops with crisp pancetta, black pudding and creme fraiche were absolutely meltingly soft and delicious. Also on the menu and looking equally appetising, warm pigeon breast with a woodland salad, topped with crisp bacon, wild mushrooms and blackberries, or chilli and mango salad peppers with cabbage, carrots and mango in chilli-citrus vinaigrette, or the tempting brioche toast with marinated herring with sautéed onions and lightly fried egg.
T
HE MAIN COURSE menu starred a sumptuous piece of steak dressed up as ‘Deconstructed Fillet of August/September 2015 Vanilla
Beef Wellington’ with a potato rosti and a pile of buttered spinach lashed with madeira jus, and a perfectly cooked pan fried duck breast tucked up with sautéed potatoes, savoy cabbage and bacon-bits. Lamb
“This is wholesome, well-prepared and thought through food” cutlets, roast chicken, sea bass, hake and a roasted vegetable bake all feature on a menu with something for everyone – but not a burger in sight. The desserts are just as patriotic in their nod to place
and time – a lovely seasonal strawberry fool comes with a crispy wisp of spun sugar – and the awesome sticky chocolate pudding looked stunning next to toffee sauce, strawberry mousse and a huge scoop of chocolate ice cream. The simple appeal of the Townhouse is its fabulous fare – this is wholesome, well-prepared and thought through food – and its broad appeal across ages – younger trendy couples on date nights are here as are older groups enjoying an evening out together. The Townhouse is easy living, urban eating out and it really is a very relaxing experience. REVIEW: LOUISE CULLEN

DRINK
Go Prosecco!
What better drink than Prosecco to enjoy while the sun is shining. Here are some fabulous cocktail recipes to get you in the mood!
Prosecco Mojito
Prosecco cocktails do not get any fresher than this contemporary take on the classic Mojito. You’ll need to prepare the mint syrup at least an hour before you plan to serve these. For the syrup: 230ml water 230g white sugar A generous handful of fresh mint To serve: Crushed ice 45ml white rum ½ fresh lime, plus a wedge to garnish Chilled Prosecco
1 First, make a simple mint
74
Squeeze in the juice of half a lime and top with Prosecco. 6 Stir with a spoon or cocktail stirrer, garnish with a lime wedge and serve.
G&Fizz Prosecco Cocktail
Our favourite drink, after Prosecco of course, is Gin. This cocktail combines the two perfectly with the added perfume of Elderflower. Just perfect for a sunny lazy day in the garden or an evening outside with friends.
Gin Elderflower Cordial Fresh Mint Sprigs and/or Cucumber slices Prosecco Method
1 Pour a dash of elderflower cordial and 20ml of gin into a glass and simply fill with cold Prosecco! 2 Then you can decorate with a sprig of fresh mint or slice of cucumber if you wish! See over. Vanilla August/September 2015

syrup: put the water into a pan and bring to the boil. 2 Add sugar to the boiling water and stir until dissolved. Take the pan off the heat, and add about 20 mint leaves. 3 Allow to steep for at least an hour before straining into a glass container. This can be kept in the fridge for up to two weeks. 4 Now you’re ready to make Prosecco Mojitos – pour a couple of dessert spoons of the syrup into a tall glass, add 10 mint leaves and muddle together in the bottle of the glass. 5 Add a generous amount of crushed ice, followed by the rum.

Josh Seager Founder of the local GenR8 loyalty scheme
My East Coast Life
What are the future plans for GenR8?
Josh Seager, 27, has lived in Ipswich his whole life (he’s the fourth generation of Seagers living in this town). He lives in the waterfront area of Ipswich and has been a full-time Firefighter for the last 6 years.
Though GenR8 is still in its early stages, I believe we now have a firm foundation with nearly 90 businesses and over 750 card-holding members. Moving forward, I have also pledged to donate 100% of the profits made through the public sale of GenR8 cards to charities doing great work in the Ipswich area.
Can you explain to us (briefly) what the GenR8 scheme is about?
How did a firefighter get involved with promoting local businesses? That’s a good question! The idea for GenR8 came to me after visiting my old place of work (Anglia Indoor Kart Racing). The owners there had recently ran a promotional offer
Can you tip us off to any hidden gems in the town?
with a national discount voucher provider and although reaction to their advertised offer had been good, the commission they were required to pay to advertise meant that they actually made a significant loss. It was clear to me that this wasn’t sustainable for small businesses and so I decided I’d try and create something which could benefit both local businesses and consumers whilst cutting out the ‘middle man’ costs. I bought myself a laptop, wrote up some proposals and pitched the idea to a number of local business owners. Everyone seemed to think the idea was a good one, and so GenR8 was born.
There are so many to choose from, but if I had to pick just one, I’d say The House In Town on St Peters Street. It has such an eclectic mix of unique products which you just cannot find anywhere else.
What do you think makes Ipswich special? I’d say it’s a number of things. We have lots of heritage in this town and you’ll also find that reflected in some of the impressive architecture here. Ipswich has a very strong arts and culture scene, thanks to places like The Wolsey Theatre and Dance East; both located just a stonesthrow away from our beautiful Marina. I also think Ipswich’s future is what makes it special. The town still has huge potential and it seems that there are lots of exciting things planned for the next few years here. Watch this space! n

GenR8 is a membership card based loyalty scheme with a focus on building longterm relationships between Ipswich’s local businesses and consumers to bring back the ‘buy local’ mentality in our community. The GenR8 card encourages the use of local businesses by providing members with a huge range of exclusive deals and discounts at all types of local businesses – from restaurants to retail, hairdressers to hydrotherapy and cafés to craft shops! Every business we feature is an independent, meaning not only do our cardholders enjoy great savings, but the money they do spend stays within our local economy.
