AILED AS THE PERFECT musical comedy, Guys and Dolls rolls the dice as it swaggers into the Theatre Royal Norwich in January 2019 with an exciting new production by the Norfolk & Norwich Operatic Society. With a full orchestra and fabulous cast, this talented Company returns to the Theatre Royal following its tremendous success with Top Hat in 2018. Butterfly baubles raise thousands for EACH

T

rimming the tree is one of the most exciting times at Christmas. Untangling the fairy lights while sipping on a glass of mulled wine, it really signals that the magic of Christmas has arrived. This year, intu Chapelfield is giving you the chance to add some new festive sparkle to your home, while supporting a local charity, and decorating your tree like royalty. Norfolk’s biggest shopping centre has once again partnered up with children’s charity EACH, to sell beautiful, limited edition glass butterfly baubles. The stunning decorations are on sale now, for just £15 each, with all proceeds going straight to EACH’s nook appeal; a £10 million campaign to build a new hospice just five miles south of Norwich, in Framingham Earl, and transform children’s palliative care. Sheridan Smith, intu Chapelfield’s marketing manager says the butterfly baubles were extremely popular last year, and hopes to raise thousands more for EACH this time around. “The butterfly baubles make a beautiful, unique gift for a loved one, or a stunning addition to your own home. And by buying a

22

bauble, you’re not only supporting a great cause, but your tree will also have something in common with Royalty! “HRH the Duchess of Cambridge is the patron of EACH, and in recognition of this, we gifted Princess Charlotte and Prince George a butterfly bauble each last year, to hang on their family tree. When we received a letter of thanks from Kensington Palace, we were thrilled. And of course, we couldn’t leave Prince Louis out this year, so another decoration has been sent by special delivery, ahead of his very first Christmas.” “We really hope people will

want to add a bauble to their trees at home too, back the campaign and spread some festive cheer by raising thousands for the nook appeal.” Each bauble contains a handmade, purple origami butterfly and sparkling gold lametta, and comes in a purple, satin-lined keepsake box. ■ To support EACH and add some new festive sparkle to your home buy your Butterfly Bauble from the Information Desk at intu Chapelfield or online at

s the year draws to its end, the weather gets bleaker and the days draw shorter, should we be depressed? Absolutely not! At Oculus we can reflect on a great year just gone. We’ve had the pleasure of lots of new people coming to see us, trying and buying fab new eyewear. We’ve loved the way the people of Norwich have embraced our exciting and different eyewear. A lot have mentioned how much we are like the opticians they've seen in Paris, Rome and Milan. This is not a coincidence, it's exactly what we set out to be. It is a different experience to what you've been used to. In the UK, generally people visit their optician after they have had a reminder to get their eyes retested, then they may or may not renew their glasses. On the continent, people will pop into their optician and browse at the new fashions. They may fancy

some new eyewear for a holiday, a new job or very often just because they want a change in the same way as changing your hair style or colour. It’s exciting to look forward to the new year as well. We are looking forward to visiting MIDO in Milan, the worlds biggest eyewear show in February. We have also started working with a frame designer in Rome, who will be designing and manufacturing eyewear exclusively for us and the people of Norwich. So a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all our clients and Vanilla readers, and a huge ‘Thank you’ to all of you who have purchased eyewear from us or even just popped in to say ‘Hi!’. “You can become mentally incapable of dealing with your affairs though illness or an accident at any age

Do I need a Lasting Power of Attorney? MY QUESTION: I already have a Will but one of my friends has suggested I consider making a Lasting Power of Attorney. I am not really sure if I need one and where to start?

ANSWER: Many of us know the importance of making a Will but not so many consider the importance of making a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA). LPAs are often associated with becoming elderly or being diagnosed with dementia however this is not the case as you can become mentally incapable of dealing with your affairs though illness or an accident at any age. SO WHAT IS AN LPA?

An LPA is a legal document which allows you to appoint someone who you trust (your Attorney), to make decisions in relation to your property and financial affairs and/or health and welfare should

40

you become incapable of making decisions for yourself. There are two types of LPA and we recommend you make both types: Property and Financial Affairs LPA This allows your attorney to make decisions about your property and finances. This may include selling your property (if, for example, you need to go into care), paying household bills, dealing with bank accounts and general management of your finances. Health and Welfare LPA This allows your attorney to make decisions about your personal

Vanilla December 2018/January 2019

REAL LIVES welfare. This may include, where you live, what treatments you receive and most importantly, you can give your Attorneys the authority to make life sustaining treatment decisions on your behalf if you are unable to do so yourself. WHY DO I NEED AN LPA?

We recommend that all clients consider making an LPA, as no one has an automatic right to make decisions on someone’s behalf. When it comes to your finances, many people believe their spouse, civil partner or “next of kin” can make decisions but this is not the case and even if you make somebody a signatory on your account, this authority will end automatically if you lose capacity. Even if you have joint accounts with somebody, the joint account holder has no authority to make sole decisions on the account and if you lose capacity these accounts can be frozen by the banks. WHAT HAPPENS IF I DON’T MAKE AN LPA?

If you do not make an LPA and you become mentally incapable of managing your affairs, somebody must apply to the Court of Protection for a Deputyship Order. The application process is incredibly lengthy and expensive and can take several months to complete. You would also not have any control on who applies to be your Deputy and so the person who applies may not be the person you wish to manage your affairs. It is therefore very important to put LPAs in place appointing the people who you trust absolutely to take on such an important role. ■ December 2018/January 2019 Vanilla

POWER OF ATTORNEY Before making an LPA, consider who you want to appoint as your Attorney. ● Your Attorney can be anyone over 18 who is not bankrupt. ● It is vital that you have complete trust in your Attorney,

as they will be able to make all decisions about your property and finances and/or personal welfare. ● You can choose as many Attorneys as you wish as well as

deciding on any restrictions, and whether they act together or independently of each other. ● You can name replacements in case one of your Attorneys

dies or is unable to act, and you can also name people to be notified when application is made to register your LPA. ● You can appoint different Attorneys in each LPA.

DID YOU KNOW? Once you have made an LPA it cannot be used until it has been registered with the Office of the Public Guardian (OPG). Your LPA can be registered at any time, but the benefit of registering it immediately after it is made is that your Attorney can use it as soon as the need arises, rather than having to wait for registration to be completed.

We are here to help... If you would like any further information regarding LPAs or wish to make an LPA, please contact Kathrine Bearman, Wills, Probate and Tax Team on probate@steeleslaw.co.uk or 01379 652141.

BRINGING THE PAST TO LIFE Discover the secrets of your family... through the generations

E

VER WANTED to find out more about your family history and uncover its fascinating past? Pro-Gen Research can bring it all to life, trace your family tree back to its roots, help you track down lost family, or reveal the history of a particular house. Samantha Kimber, who runs Pro-Gen Research, is a genealogist and qualified lawyer. “Discovering family history is a fascinating process, and I have been involved in genealogical research for over ten years. I truly love what I do, it’s a wonderful subject to be involved in. “It’s vital to have an empathetic approach to do this kind of work, and be mindful that family situations can be sensitive. Every family is different and understanding the dynamic is crucial before I proceed. It’s generally a good idea if immediate family members are aware of what I am doing, as this gets everyone on board and starts them thinking about stories they have heard, or anything that could help with my research. “I also have an in-depth knowledge of the sources of

42

information at my disposal, because clients need me to be tenacious, professional and accurate. Unlike some companies I don’t use DNA testing, I research both online and off-line. Plus I have a network of contacts all around the world who help with my research. “

S

O WHAT kind of services does Pro-Gen Research offer? ‘“Clients can choose from three family tree

packages, to suit their budget,” says Samantha. “Another fascinating area I look at is house history research. I can build a picture of a house over many years and the families who lived there, and this could be your home! “More and more women are asking me to research the maternal line of their family. This is an area that’s often overlooked, as people traditionally focus on the men who fought in wars, for example, but the women who were left behind have a fascinating history too. “My clients are generally older, because they are more focused on their past and aware of their mortality. I tell my clients to talk to their family while they can, ask questions, winkle out those fantastic stories and keep them alive. Relive those experiences to bring the past into the present.” ■ THE GIFT OF HISTORY Have you considered that family history research can make a wonderful gift for a birthday or for Christmas? he New Volkswagen Touareg is distinctive, stylish, bold yet understated, and big; most of all big! Having said that, because it has a low roof-line and a wide stance, it still looks sporty and purposeful. This is a handsome vehicle to take to any event, any time, anywhere. However classy it looks on the outside, the interior goes further, setting a benchmark for quality. There is an abundance of leather, soft touch components and sophisticated bright trims to set off the look of exclusivity. The seating position is high and as there are acres of glass, all round visibility is superb. Even rear seat passengers get the full sense of luxury due to the space and headroom along with all the modern comforts such as the ability to control heating and ventilation independently of the front seats and from side to side. There are very few conventional

switches. Instead, the driver display and central touch screen are formed to look like a continuous pane of glass. It all operates like a smart phone with the ability to personalise which functions are displayed and where. Controlling the various functions is with hand gestures – and works beautifully, intuitively and clear. The technology is at the top of the game. There are far too many features and options to give justice in a short review. The list of safety/driver assist items is quite extraordinary. One of my favourites is the night vision camera which can display in the centre of the driver's dash. The ability at night to spot the

Thinking about getting Invisalign treatment? There’s never been a better time!

O

The clear choice for a

CONFIDENT SMILE 46

ur advancing digital world and rise of social media are together driving the desire to look our best – to always show off a great smile. That’s why an everincreasing number of people are specifically looking to Invisalign clear aligners to deliver the smile they’ve always wanted. Since 2009, Ross has been offering his patients Invisalign, a tooth straightening treatment that is fast, easy, comfortable and nearly invisible. So how does it work? “The Invisalign system straightens teeth using a series of clear, nearly invisible, removable aligners that are custom-made for your teeth. Each aligner is replaced weekly, as your teeth move, so little by little, week by week, your teeth gradually move towards the final position. There is no metal, no screws to tighten, just an unobtrusive, smooth, clear aligner. “You can remove the aligners to eat and drink, so they fit around your lifestyle. And because they are made of a material that is nearly invisible, they are pleasant to wear and the patient isn’t self conscious. “Patients using Invisalign

only need to come and see me around every 6-8 weeks so we can monitor their progress, and they can come and pick up their aligners from the Practice and just change them at home, using a new one every week”

W

hat makes Invisalign treatment with Ross Campbell even more appealing is that he uses an optical scanner to produce a 3D map of patients' teeth, rather than taking messy and uncomfortable impressions. “The optical scanner is a fantastic piece of technology that makes the Invisalign process so much easier and far more accurate. It gives instant computerised results, so in seconds the patient can see, on screen, how their teeth will look at the end of the Invisalign process. It’s quick, easy and mess free.” And Invisalign is also great news for teenagers! “Unlike traditional metal braces, Invisalign aligners are made of a smooth, clear material that’s virtually invisible and completely removable so young people can carry on enjoying contact sports, playing wind instruments and eating their favourite foods. It’s easier, faster and they can even track their progress using a smart phone app. The Invisalign system transforms your smile and hardly impacts on your daily life. For Andi Gibbs, Invisalign was a confidence builder. “As I got older I wanted to feel better

about my teeth, as they weren’t as straight I wanted. I am a very smiley person, so it’s important for me to have confidence in my smile. “The whole Invisalign experience for me was very positive indeed. The beauty of Invisalign is that it fits around your life, and you can manage it from home. The aligners are also invisible, so there was no embarrassment factor at all. Ross was incredibly helpful and the overall value for money was superb. I feel great – it’s the best money I have spent in recent years.”■

BEAUTY Hi-tech: 3D Lipo and Sleeping Beauty light therapy facials

Lauren McKaig (right) and therapist Chloe-Ellen at the new clinic in St Benedicts Street, Norwich

NORWICH FACE & BODY CLINIC

illaT Vanilla meets the dynamic new team Van O REP R

A

N EXCITING addition to the thriving Norwich beauty scene is a fabulous new clinic on St Benedicts Street, the Norwich Face & Body Clinic. The joint venture between entrepreneur Lauren McKaig and business partner Karen Jones, that opened last month, will be offering a variety of high tech, non-surgery aesthetic treatments. Over the years Lauren has managed dental practices, a property development company, qualified as a gym instructor and beautician, not to mention renovating and letting out properties she owns! Lauren has brought together a formidable team, each with their own speciality and invested in some really state-of-the-art equipment, so they can deliver high level treatments for men and women. Facial Aesthetics are carried out by Dr Savan Shah. He provides his patients with a tranquil, relaxed

atmosphere to air their concerns and always provides them with world-class care. There are other fantastic specialists on hand who offer Holistic Therapies in the form of Reflexology, Massage, (specialising in Indian head, pregnancy and baby massages) Reiki, Aromatherapy, Crystal therapy and Mindfulness/Meditation workshops as well as the much in demand Eyebrow Microblading. Therapist Chloe-Ellen works alongside Lauren, on eyelash extensions, the much talked about 3D Lipo, Sleeping Beauty light therapy facials and anti-ageing/skin tightening facials. It was through her own experience having 3D-Lipo treatments that Lauren found a gap in the market in Norwich’s advanced beauty services. Lauren says, “3D Lipo instantly made me feel great and, because I didn’t think it was something

December 2018/January 2019 Vanilla

widely offered in this area, I looked into setting it up as a business offering this and many other aesthetic and holistic treatments.” The 3D lipo treatment melts away fat cells, tightens skin and even banishes cellulite. It uses ultrasound which disrupts the cell membrane and creates a vibration and the fat cell cannot stand the pressure it puts it under and it breaks down and then drains away naturally through the lymphatic system, through the liver. The machine also smooths skin out using radio frequency. It encourages the production of collagen naturally, which fills out the skin. A dermology treatment is used to loosen and break down lumpy, skin which again escapes the body via the lymphatic system. The final treatment is cryolipolysis which tackles the nemesis of many women – bingo wings – by freezing the fat cells. 3D Lipo not only works on the body, but also the face offering two fantastic facials – one that focuses on skin tightening, the other anti-ageing. The clinic is also offering the futuristic looking Sleeping Beauty Light Therapy Facial – a fabulous treatment using new LED style facial masks. Each LED mask uses colour light therapy (UV-free) in specific wavelengths via tiny LED bulbs to increase facial blood circulation and promote collagen production, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, skin healing properties, and acne reduction. ■ Norwich Face & Body Clinic offer free consultations and treatment taster sessions. subconscious changes. Hypnosis is perfectly safe and recognised by the medical profession. Research shows that hypnotherapy is effective in 93% of patients after six sessions. “I see so many clients who have been on antidepressants for years, but the underlying cause of their depression has never been tackled. It is so much better to deal with things once and for all and start living life without emotional pain.”

CONCENTRATE ON POSITIVE LIFE CHANGE with David McGee of DM Hypnotherapy

T

HE PRESSURES of life are greater than ever, and many of us feel weighed down by anxiety, fear, low self esteem and lack of confidence. But some people never tackle these issues and continue to carry them around. This can often have a very negative impact on overall health and wellbeing. David McGee is a professional hypnotherapist who has helped many people to make positive and lasting changes in their lives. “Life change is hard, but hypnotherapy is proven to be very effective in helping those suffering from emotional pain,” he says. “Ten years ago my life was transformed when I went to see a

54

hypnotherapist for help with clinical depression and terrible work stress. The change in me was so profound that I decided on a career change and became a hypnotherapist myself. I want to help others achieve the same positive results. “People are often suspicious about hypnotherapy, and think it’s perhaps a trick. But hypnosis is just focused concentration and relaxation, it’s not a stage show or ‘magic’ and clients are fully conscious throughout. It’s a fast and effective way to access your subconscious mind, which is where all our negative and sometimes emotionally harmful thoughts come from. Without using hypnosis it is difficult to make lasting

can help them to relax and allow their birthing experience to be more natural, gentle and calm. “Unlike many hypnotherapists I offer a complementary 90-minute consultation where clients can come and talk about the problems they wish to address, have a hypnosis experience and find

out exactly how I can help them achieve life changing results.” www.dmhypnotherapynorwich.uk

HAT KIND of negative feelings does David help his clients with, and are they often the result of ‘modern’ life? “Most of my work is helping people with problems such as stress, anxiety, depression, and low self esteem. It’s true that there are issues we have to deal with now that we didn’t have many years ago. Stress is higher, but we now feel it’s ok to talk about it and get help. We also tend to compare ourselves with others on things like social media. This self scrutiny is very negative, especially for younger people. “I also offer hypnobirthing. Mothers-to-be are often riddled by the fear of the pain of childbirth and this anxiety can make it so much worse. With hypnobirthing I

BY JOELLE FORDHAM MOst(DO) PRINCIPAL OSTEOPATH AT BODY FLOW OSTEOPATHY If you moan and groan when you get up, struggle to get socks on in the morning and feel that you need time to get going, then you know that ‘Getting Old’ feeling! People see their GP because they feel stiff, achy and lethargic just to be told: “you’re getting old” or “it’s old age”, accept it and learn to live with it... However, in our clinical experience much can be done to help! This premature ‘Getting Old’ feeling is commonly caused by muscular pain and issues with misalignment. A car doesn’t run efficiently if the tires are flat and the engine poorly tuned and our bodies are much the same: with efficient biomechanics moving becomes smoother, easier and requires less energy. People often start feeling like their old self again within just a few sessions and find a new lease of life. Reducing unnecessary pain and suffering is what we’re all about. Our treatment approach is gentle and effective and our new clients often comments on how at ease they felt, having initially been apprehensive about booking an appointment. The best fit for flooring

A

RBONS Carpet & Flooring has been in the business for 20 years, so they are the local experts when it comes to finding the best flooring for every environment. We asked owner John Arbon what sets them apart, and why they are so successful. “We take the business of carpets and flooring very seriously and since we opened the shop in 2016 we have worked hard to stand out from the competition by offering an expert service that is second to none. We must be doing something right, because we have over 100 5-star reviews on Google! “Our showroom is stocked with leading carpet brands such as Brintons, Axminster, Cormar, Ulster and Brockway. We’re also approved retailers for luxury tile flooring by Distinctive and Moduleo. You will find us open 7 days a week and we offer home visits from 8am to 7pm Monday to Saturday. Many of our customers take advantage of our sample loan service so they can

64

see how a flooring will look in their home. “Installation is at the heart of our business, and our fitters are all experts. We will always treat your home with respect, taking offcuts and old flooring away and vacuuming as standard. “We are very proud to have recently become members of The Carpet Foundation. This is an important code of practice that shows we operate fairly and transparently and it sets us apart, not only from the ‘man with a van’ traders, but also unregulated carpet shops. “Arbons prides itself on offering a friendly, fast and professional service, and we have recently added Richard to the team. He is very experienced, welcoming and is on hand to take care of all enquiries.” Does John have any advice for readers about the dos and don’ts

of choosing flooring? “When choosing a carpet you need to think about whether wool or man made fibre is best. If you have small children where there may be spillages, or you suffer from allergies, then synthetic fibres are the way to go. Otherwise wool is a good choice as it tends to wear better. “Colour selection is also something we help our customers with. Grey is very on-trend, but it can sometimes clash with brown, beige or even oak furnishings, so tone selection is key. A good compromise is a colour we call ‘greige’, which is a mix of beige and grey. This works very well with modern grey themes and your existing furnishings.” ■ Arbons Carpet & Flooring 94 Colman Rd, Norwich NR4 7EH 01603 443588 f t Arbons Carpet & Flooring

STYLE FILE BY HOLLY PAGANI INTERIOR DESIGNER AT SALT INTERIORS

Trends for the year ahead Once again, the year has flown past and there are already murmurings about the new trends for interiors in 2019. Pantone have predicted hot fiesta colours being used alongside this year’s favourite greens and blush tones. So, more pinks, reds and oranges as accent colours as well as a move towards more earthy tones and sandy hues. A welcome change from the cool greys and Scandi tones of the past few years I think. There is also talk of curvy furniture, mid-century furniture, fringing, even more velvet being used in upholstery and big enveloping headboards! I love shaped headboards and often commission oversized, unusual shaped ones for my clients and this coming year I’m already thinking of going a bit further and having half testers made with lots of trimming. I’d like to use more braid and trim in general as I think it can really bring life to an otherwise plain cushion, chair or curtain.

Geometric wallpapers for ceilings

Osborne & Little braids and trimmings

Curvy furniture, big headboards and half testers in fiesta colours. Fabric and wallpaper by Osborne & Little

Most unexpectedly though, it seems the ceiling is about to get interesting! Geometric wallpapers, colours and texture are all on the agenda to enliven a much-overlooked part of the room. And why not? Apart from trying to persuade your decorator to do it of course... ● For any of the soft furnishings shown here or for any interior design queries contact Holly at Salt Interiors: info@saltinteriors.co.uk.

CHRISTMAS 2018

TALKING TREES HOW MANY TREES ARE SOLD EACH YEAR? The British Christmas Tree Growers Association estimates around seven million trees are bought each year. HOW OLD IS A TYPICAL FULL HEIGHT TREE? A typical 6 to 7 feet high Christmas tree is between 10 and 12 years old. Seed is collected from trees either in the wild or in specially selected seed orchards, sown in a nursery where the seedlings then grow for three to four years. The young plants are then planted by a grower and grown on for a further seven to nine years. WHICH IS THE MOST POPULAR VARIETY? About 80% of the trees sold are Nordmann Fir, around 10-15% Norway Spruce and the remainder are lesser known varieties. HOW DO I KNOW I’M CHOOSING A FRESH TREE? A fresh tree will have a healthy green appearance with few browning needles. Needles should be flexible and not fall off if you run a branch through your hand. Raise the tree a few inches off the ground and drop it on the butt end. Very few green needles should drop off the tree but it is normal for a few inner brown needles to drop off. HOW DO I KEEP MY TREE AT ITS BEST? When you get it home, it is advantageous if about half an inch is cut off the butt in order to open up the pores of the tree. The tree should be kept outside in a cool shaded place, standing in water, until it is required indoors. When the tree is brought indoors, mount it in a water-holding stand and place it away from direct heat, such as a radiator. Keep the container topped up with water every day; you will be surprised how much the tree drinks. WHEN CAN I GET ONE?

Norfolk chef returns! The Brasserie restaurant at Barnham Broom Hotel, Golf and Spa has recently welcomed the talented Mark Elvin to the team as Head Chef. Norfolk born and bred, Mark has returned to his Norfolk roots after spending much of his culinary career across the UK working in award-winning hotels and restaurants. He is known for serving classic, robust flavours with a modern twist. Barnham Broom’s new menu has just been launched and features high-quality fayre with thoughtful

touches and extra flourishes. Top of Mark’s recommendations would be textures of heritage beetroot with whipped goats’ cheese to start, followed by a hearty braised shank of lamb and parsley mash. For dessert, the dark chocolate truffle torte, caramelised figs and raspberry sorbet is perfect to tantalise taste buds!

Lakenham Creamery are in festive swing following a very hectic summer. The Norwich based producer is delighted to announce a collaboration with another of Norfolk's most popular brands - The English Whisky Company. Cocktails with a caffeine kick!

Alchemista Coffee Co in Norwich is certainly causing a buzz – and not just the caffeine variety! With a five-star rating on TripAdvisor already, they’ve recently been named by the Independent as one of the top places to go in the country for a coffee cocktail. From mudslide-style boozy milkshakes to Irishesque concoctions with floating cream, Alchemista has six options on the menu. Our favourite is the Mysterium – hazelnut liqueur and coffee – combined to alluring effect, Frangelico, Kahlua and expresso, served on the rocks with a little cream. Future cocktail events are being planned, but in the meantime, spice up the Christmas shopping or book an office cocktail tasting with a pit-stop in St Gregory’s Alley... SHORT BREAKS

One of the ‘Outstanding’ rooms

Mind, body, and a bit of spirit... by the sea!

C

HRISTMAS is all about spoiling ourselves, and our loved ones, but we can often feel a bit sluggish after the over indulgence of the festive season! But here’s a chance to press the reset button and get a New Year spring in your step. The beautiful Swan Hotel in Southwold, is offering a special ‘Detox, Retox & Repeat’ short break that’s guaranteed to make you feel relaxed and refreshed. Designed for couples, the short break begins with dinner at The Swan, an overnight stay in one of the hotel’s stylish rooms – choose from ‘Excellent’, ‘Fabulous’ or ‘Outstanding’ – and then wake up for a ‘Detox’ private yoga session on the beach as the sun rises over Sole Bay. After you’ve worked up an appetite, enjoy a sumptuous breakfast back at the hotel, followed by a ‘Retox’ tour and tasting in the Adnams Distillery. Daniel Ayers, from Adnams,

says: “This is the perfect postChristmas getaway for couples, and it’s a great way to chill out and relax on our beautiful coast. The ‘Repeat’ part of the package encourages guests to extend their stay and do it all over again if they want to, or they can always come back at a later date. “We wanted to incorporate the opportunity to try a few spirits as part of the break, because the distillery tour and tasting is a very popular experience for hotel guests. Our aim is to meet the needs of the mind and body… with a bit of spirit as well!” The Swan is well known as more than just a hotel; it offers fantastic food and drink, a wide choice of wellness breaks, and the chance to immerse yourself in Adnams brewery and distillery – not to mention their growing range of low- and no-alcohol beers and wines. So is competition in the boutique hotel business hotting up, and do people expect more

from their hotel experiences these days? “Of course we have to be competitive, but we believe our offering is unique and very special,” says Daniel. “The Swan and Southwold are 'destinations' so we are spoiled for choice when it comes to creating memorable experiences for our guests. “I do think people want more from their hotel breaks these days, more than just a room and dinner, because it adds value to the whole stay. We want them to appreciate everything the area has to offer, and have the best possible experience.” ■

Detox, Retox & Repeat short breaks can be booked between 2 January and 31 March 2019 at any time of the week.

Fresh, flexible… and delivered to your door!

HEY’RE a friendly bunch at Norfolk Veg Box, and they do exactly what it says on the tin…or box in their case! They’re just the ticket at this time of year, when we need only the finest seasonal veg for the table. So here’s the answer; the freshest veg, salads and fruits, delivered straight to your door. Right on time! Owner Richard Ewin says: “Norfolk Veg Box is a local, Norfolk family-run business, and we work closely with a wide range of excellent local producers and growers to create healthy and delicious seasonal veg boxes that contain only the freshest vegetables, salads and fruits. Our boxes are great value and we

deliver right to the door of homes and businesses throughout Norfolk. “This is a very busy time for us, no Christmas meal would be complete without crisp sprouts, buttered carrots and of course the ultimate roast potato! We are here to ensure they all arrive on time; and they are the best and freshest possible. “Freshness is what we’re all about, and our customers tell us our produce lasts far longer than other suppliers. This is because, on average, the local produce we source takes no longer than two days to get from field to our boxes. “We’re flexible too, you can choose exactly what you want in your veg box, so you don’t get

something you don’t like, or we have a range of standard boxes that contain a superb mix of different seasonal produce. We can also source other produce from further afield, if you have a specific need. “A priority for us is reducing waste and our environmental impact. To help minimise our carbon footprint we use a weekly delivery route to cover most of the county. We try not to use packaging, but where we do we use bio-degradable brown paper bags, and we re-use our delivery boxes as many times as we can. Since starting in 2009 we have always strived to minimise our use of single-use plastic. “We deliver right to your door, covering the vast majority of Norfolk, so you have the complete confidence that you will get the best every time, and the convenience that it will arrive when you need it.” CHRISTMAS BOXES

The Wine Report BY STE VE HE ARNDEN

VENDANGES TARDIVES £29.50

BEAUJOLAIS ROSÉ £8.60

Christmas is about to come again. Whenever I think about Gewürztraminer Vendanges Tardives, I always think about rich fruit cake, as it is a perfect wine to go with cake! Could be Simnel cake, I guess for Easter but... it is Christmas. Anyway, Michel Fonné does produce a fantastic wine, it has strong, spicy and sugary aromas, which linger in the nose for some while. The grapes are hand and late picked, the latter ensuring the grapes are full of sugar. A little frost does them no harm and increases the intensity of all the senses. A deep yellow colour, almost edging towards a pale brown gives the game away as far as the taste is concerned. A rich sweetness hits the front of the tongue, the flavours gliding over the rest of the tongue. Spicy with honey overtones, sweet but not cloying, smooth with an aftertaste of spiced fruit. The 2008 vintage has proved to last a long time, and remember when you drink this chilled, only have a small glass and sip rather than drink it in one gulp!! It will remain very good opened for a few days and it is worth making it last. Not cheap at £29.50 per bottle but for that something very special it is worth every penny. As an aperitif why not try a Beaujolais Rosé – new in at Tastebuds – light and dry with well balanced acidity and fruit. Perfect with nibbles and great value!

Nick & Lesley Pears , the beating heart of The Pear Inn

A hearty welcome at

The Pear Tree Inn

W

E ALL LOVE a good, traditional pub for a cosy pint in the winter and a refreshing tipple outside in summer, so we are thrilled to profile one of the newest in Norwich – The Pear Tree Inn, on Unthank Road. Owned by Nick Pears and his wife Lesley, the couple moved from Hong Kong with their 3 children 6 months ago with the aim of creating a great local pub in Norwich where everyone would feel welcome. “When we first walked into the building it felt like a real pub, and we knew it was the place for us,” said Nick. “I have worked in the pub trade for over 20 years all over the world and I think Norfolk and Norwich are wonderful, with so much potential.

82

“The Pear Tree Inn feels like an old, snug traditional village pub, and it appeals to students, couples, families; everyone who wants to be in a friendly place where they can relax and feel at home. We are keeping it simple and focusing on just making it a great place to be. “Our first summer here was incredible, and our deck outside during the endless hot days was the perfect place to cool down. We are dog friendly too, and our new Husky puppy is the main attraction at the moment! People have told us they are very happy this place is a real pub again.” The drinks on offer are designed to appeal to everyone, with a great selection of wines, local ales and craft lagers. “We have developed our own drink,

the aptly named Pear Tree Craft Lager, which is going down very well indeed,” says Nick. So what about food? “There are so many gastro pubs in Norwich that we are focusing on the drink for now,” Nick explains. “But we plan to introduce a great Sunday Roast soon, and then a menu of traditional hearty winter meals that tie in with the values of the pub, such as suet pudding, plus seasonal menus and vegan food as well.” The pub is also a popular venue for live music every Thursday night, but not for loud heavy rock! “Our performing space isn’t very big, so we host an eclectic mix of small groups that are great to listen to over a drink.” Let the good times roll at this wonderfully laid-back pub. Why not book your Christmas party at the Pear Tree Inn and get the season off to a hearty start?! ■ The Pear Tree Inn 79 Unthank Rd, Norwich NR2 2PE 07707 999649 f Pear Tree Inn Norwich

THE LAST WINE BAR & RESTAURANT

A

quick straw poll of out of town friends recently revealed some horrifying results. They said that they drive to the city, park near the river and eat at the chain restaurants there. Every. Single. Time. To me, that’s like turning up to Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory and asking for an apple. Or arriving at a champagne vineyard, only to order a can of coke. Norwich is home to many independent restaurants which serve great food in a variety of cool, cute and stylish surroundings. One of the oldest is The Last Wine Bar, formerly a Victorian shoe factory but now in its 29th year as a restaurant. You'll find it

84

on St George’s Street, a stone’s throw away from the Playhouse. You’ll love the New York feel of the bar area – bare wooden floors, brickwork and original features. It’s a great stop after a long day shopping. A cold quince gin, a seat by the window, and sore feet and heavy bags are soon forgotten. The lower level downstairs with seating booths is perfect for a cosy meal on date night and the restaurant area with crisp, white table linen is lovely for an occasion or pre-theatre food. The Last’s loyal following have long enjoyed seasonal and fresh ingredients sourced locally, complimented by a fantastic wine list. But the thing that really struck me during my visit was the buzzy

atmosphere and super friendly service. Water arrived quickly, bread and a deliciously nutty olive oil were thoughtfully dropped off while we took our time over the menu. Melt-in-the-mouth pork belly and a halloumi salad with fig and sweet honey were on the table in no time. Our server was attentive and helpful when it came to the wine, providing samples for us to try. Wine is a speciality in the restaurant, of course, but don’t be intimidated. We loved the helpful descriptions underneath each listing and frankly, who doesn’t want a glass of ‘pure sunshine’ or at least to try a wine that is 'juicy, supple, delicious' or which gives ‘great pleasure’! The chargrilled fillet steak was cooked to perfection and the gnocchi I had was homemade. Such details, are not missed by me. All of the food is beautifully presented too, giving you a real sense of the quality values The Last Wine Bar holds dear. While it is one of the city’s longest serving restaurants, it’s still one of the best. The experienced staff, warm atmosphere and delicious food means it has to go on your ‘must try’ list. Steven Roberts AKA Aladdin, Theatre Royal Norwich

My City Life Norfolk-based actor Steven Roberts’ varied career has taken in everything from a high-profile role in Hollyoaks to the dream role of the sensitive Posner in the UK tour of Alan Bennett’s classic play The History Boys. Now he is returning to home turf as he takes on the lead role of Aladdin at Norwich Theatre Royal from December 12 to January 13, joining Emmerdale actor Rik Makarem, who will be Abanazar, and children’s TV presenter Kiera-Nicole Brennan from Milkshake, who is the Genie.

Great to see you back at Theatre Royal. What makes it special? Seeing the pantomime at Norwich Theatre Royal was where I first fell in love with the theatre. It was my earliest memory of seeing something on stage. My family used to live near Lowestoft and we used to get on the train over to Norwich to see it. I remember it being so colourful and fun, and it had a kind of chaos with all the boos and ‘It’s behind you!’, and of course Richard Gauntlett was always memorable as the Dame. What is it you enjoy most about Panto? It’s such a lovely, traditional form of theatre that everyone

can enjoy. I loved the shoutouts and seeing who’d go up on stage, and I loved the songsheets. Panto is most people’s first experience of theatre and for that reason I think it also feels nostalgic in a nice way. I remember coming to see pantomime when I was really diddy and I remember loving being part of that. Being in Aladdin will be so much fun. There will be the magic, the carpet, the genie and the relationship with my mum Widow Twankey. I am really looking forward to it. I’m excited.

What do you love most about spending the festive season in Norfolk? I love touring. I really like it as you get to see the country and it is nice to experience different sizes of theatre. But it is always nice to come back to Norfolk at this time of year. The Christmas lights in Norwich always make you feel festive, and being with family at this time of year is very special. And finally the two questions we ask everybody: The first is, what is your hidden gem in Norwich? The whole city is a hidden gem. Lots of people in the acting profession are always surprised when they visit Norwich to find how beautiful it is. There is so much to see and we have great historical places as well as it being a great city of culture. It really is a well-hidden secret. Secondly, where is your favourite place to eat in the city? I’ve always enjoyed sampling the culinary delights in different towns and cities when I have been away touring, so as I have been away for a while coming back to Norwich will be no different. I haven’t got a favourite place at the moment, but there are so many new places to eat, so I will definitely enjoy getting out and about to see what I can find!
