Since it started in 2014, Art For Cure has raised an astonishing £625,000. hatever you might have planned for Valentine’s Day, picking up flowers is probably lingering on the agenda. Emma Felgate from Emma’s Florist has all the secret answers on how to make your Valentine’s day bloom.
CHOOSE YOUR FLORIST WISELY
Florists are there to help you communicate an important message which makes them artists. For this reason, you need to pick a florist that you trust, ensuring that every creative choice is in tune with the your ideas, budgets and requirements. From intricate paper wrapping to unique fresh cut bouquets, Emma advises all Valentine heroes to consider all the minor details. DON’T BE AFRAID TO STEP OUTSIDE THE ROSE GARDEN
Why not step outside the dictates of tradition and go for something different? There’s more to love than a long-stem rose! Emma advises “it’s really romantic if you put some thought into your bouquet and make it personal. I’d much rather lilies for Valentine’s Day!”. Showing that you’ve paid attention to your sweetheart’s flower preferences will go a long way. VALENTINE NO-GOS
Ever heard of friend-zone flowers? Yup, they’re a thing. Emma recommends staying away from bright yellows when picking your Valentine bouquet –yellow is the colour of friendship. Let’s not risk any romance killers! GET YOUR SKATES ON
Valentine’s time is inevitably going to be an extremely busy time for florists, so Emma recommends ordering your flowers a week and a half before the big day to avoid disappointment. Emma’s Florist delivers on the day at any address, so no excuses! ESTELLE DRAGAN EMMA’S FLORIST

MODEL BEHAVIOUR What does it take to be a successful model? Primarily bone structure, height, a good agent, family support and a whole lot of positive mental attitude. Sam Simpson, of JMM, shares her thirty year industry know how.

Vanilla January/February 2019
FASHION
G
● Symmetrical and proportionate
bone structure ● Well-maintained, shiny hair ● Clear skin ● Naturally long, lean limbs ● Height: 5’8-5’11
WHY THIS LOOK? The fashion industry is big business, it’s not run by designers and editors, but by money-men. According to the British Fashion Council, it was January/February 2019 Vanilla
worth £32 billion to the UK economy last year. Believe me, the bottom line is what sells to the buying public, if there was greater profit generated by using models of any other height or size then these big fashion companies would definitely be using them already. Fortunately, the industry does respond quickly when public taste shifts and we’re currently seeing many more curvier models and celebrities – that’s very encouraging but there’s still a long way to go.
But it’s not all bad news… if they are seriously interested in fashion, then there are plenty of other careers behind the camera that will be just as fulfilling. PERSONALITY Looks alone are not enough. If two similar looking girls are up for the same job, the girl that is more fun to be around and professional will get the gig. So an engaging, charismatic outlook is important, the ability to listen and take direction and essentially good time management.

CRITERIA Looks aren’t everything but some things are non-negotiable like:

OOD MODELS are just lucky and born that way – most of the time they have never even realised that they are beautiful, as they’ve always been so much taller than their friends and felt awkward and gangly. It’s my job to make them realise that they’ve been blessed with good genes – not freakish ones. JMM will never ask a girl to be something she isn’t, we only take on girls that won’t struggle to maintain the Suffolk based digital voucher provider necessary level of fitness. has launched Pressi CorporateVITA, Choice.5’11 The Tip: Never forget a flexible FITNESS scheme provides companies with that your identity andbelief, incentive Contrary toreward popular youscheme for is employees not primarily with minimal administration and no postage, do need to be healthy, fit and being a model. transactiondiet. or delivery eat a well-balanced Just costs. You also need resilience and a thick skin to cope with the rejection – you may go to 20 castings and only get one job. NEVER PAY ANY MONEY UP FRONT!
No reputable agency will ask you for money up front to represent you or for a model portfolio. Good agencies make their money from taking a percentage of their models earnings, when they actually get them jobs, not before. Anything else is just a con. FAMILY
Parental support is crucial. Not only does a stable family life keep a model grounded but when you first start you won’t be earning much and have frequent travel expenses to London which add up, you may need their financial help. “I’M TOO SHORT, CAN I STILL MODEL?” I often get girls, or their mothers, contacting me, saying they know they aren’t tall enough but they’d be happy to just shoot beauty campaigns or catalogue. SORRY! But this is not a commercially viable reality. The market place is already flooded with girls from all around the world that have both the face and the height. Girls that cannot work across the whole spectrum of fashion industry, just won’t make enough money to survive. If you’re interested in modelling or know someone with potential, Sam at JMM would love to hear from you. For more information: www.jmmsuffolk.co.uk

Tip Always trust your agency. I was a bit precious about my hair to begin with and reluctant to get a heavy fringe cut, as they advised. I did it eventually and loved it, plus I started working all the time. So I wish I'd listened and done it sooner.
ABIGAIL, 5’10.5
Tip: Look after your skin, keep your beauty routine simple and drink lots of water. Having had lots of different make up artists and different kind of make up on my skin, I've realised how important it is to not always wear make up when I'm not working. Especially when it comes to daily skin routines, I wash my face with hot water and use a very simple paraben free moisturiser and that's it!

ike most town centres, Ipswich is changing, and like most high streets it's not without its challenges, but there’s been plenty of positive development in the last year or two. We've seen the Cornhill reopen after significant investment and the refurbishments of both Sailmakers and Buttermarket shopping centres, the latter boasting a new cinema and many top restaurant names. And now, with the arrival of Tessuti, the town offers attractive destination shopping for premium fashion brands. Located on the main high street, opposite Marks &

Spencer, Tessuti features two floors of the latest clothing, shoes and accessories from high-end labels, including Polo Ralph Lauren, Hugo Boss, Moschino, Parajumpers, DKNY and Vivienne Westwood. The store is regularly stocked with a vast collection of the latest styles and products. It also offers a Click & Collect service and allows customers to order any size or item not in stock from an in-store console. Store Manager, Gemma Curtis said: “There’s been a real appetite for quality clothing recently, with people not only wanting the same brands as their favourite actors, athletes or social
media stars but a better shopping experience also. The Ipswich store is a really relaxed browsing experience and gives shoppers the opportunity to not only see and feel the latest collection but utilise the ample fitting rooms to actually try them on. Our staff are also trained on all the brand’s particulars and on hand to advise on the best fit depending on your taste, shape or style. That’s something you can’t really experience when online shopping.” The Tessuti Winter Sale is now underway. Visit the store at 29-31 Westgate Street, Ipswich IP1 3DR or online at www.tessuti.co.uk

Despite all the negative retail news and drama out there, here on our little street we have been busy. Having kicked off December with our Festive Street Market it was a really busy month and quite jolly. Obviously hats and gloves have been very popular and quite of few of you have gone for the designer pieces from CHRISTINA BRAMPTI, which delights me enormously. I found some fun colourful little leather triangle bags that retailed for only £25. They flew out. We have a few left. I have now bitten the bullet and Cake & Catwalk will be SELLING ONLINE. I cannot put everything on the site but gradually as new stock comes in we can try and load it up so you can see it and either buy and collect or buy online and we will send it. HOW TO LOOK CHIC IN THE COLD
DOUBLE BREASTED
Camel coats have long been considered chic and our obsession has no signs of slowing down. Style this with cosy knits, trousers and a LBD with strappy sandals for an evening look.

HE WINTER COAT is perhaps one of the most worn items in our wardrobes between now and March, rivalled only by ankle boots and chunky knits. There’s simply no denying the power of great outerwear, as everyone at some point will have owned that single cover-up that kept us warm and boosted our mood on the greyest of days. Making a simple jean, tee and trainer combo feeling stylish with minimal thinking. Not only does a good winter coat keep you warm and snug as the temperatures plummet, a cool coat can add some extra style points to any look. YES – to say a coat is the foundation of any CHIC winter wardrobe is an understatement to say the least!
Wether you’re in the River Island market for something casual that you can TEDDY BEAR throw-on-the-go, try Cosy, warm and pretty, they cropped, faux fur options are trending right now. The in rich autumnal hues – or a tailored mid-length oversized style allows you to style to revitalise your 9-5 layer with knits underneath wardrobe. Right down to when the weather gets really those long cosy belted cold. They come in a great coats ideal for layering choice of colours – from pretty over knitwear and midi pastels to punchy hues. dresses. Happily, there is something out there to suit every style this winter – from Puffas to Parkas, Weekday trench coats to the favourite classic tailored numbers. So many choices this season and so many patterns too! To help you decide here are some of my favourite picks (amongst many others) of some of the CHIC and stylish coats to see you right through until spring, whatever the weather.

ENGAGEMENT RING RULE BREAKER The modern-day guide to engagement ring shopping by Estelle Dragan
BREAK CONVENTION AND MAKE THE RING PERSONAL
Choosing your future fiancée’s engagement ring should be a personal decision based on both your connection with the ring and the importance of the ring to the fiancée. In this light, a large diamond solitaire may not be the way to go, nor is it at all required by engagement etiquette. Show your partner that you’ve put your own thought and energy into the engagement rather than simply following the crowd. There’s nothing stopping you from researching and shopping around for unique stones and design elements that mean something more than convention. SCRAP THE SALARY RULES
There seems to be such heavy pressure on the proposer to spend a huge sum of their salary on the ring. Lingering ‘salary rules’ rumour that the groom should spend from two to three months of his salary on an engagement ring. STOP! Priorities are shifting, couples are evolving, and traditions are flouting. It’s time to erase financial stigmas
January/February 2019 Vanilla
surrounding engagements and think about what the ring really means to you and your partner. After all, an engagement ring should be symbolic of commitment and certainly shouldn’t represent a price tag on your finger. IT TAKES TWO TO TANGO
Who says that the proposer has to do all the work? It’s 2019 and, believe it or not, things have evolved! Let’s face it, the ‘proposee’ has probably been dreaming of this ring for a very long time, so why not make your dreams a reality and help your beloved with design ideas and inspiration? Marrying your ideas together and making the ring choice a joint effort is perfectly acceptable.
18ct white gold marquise diamond ring £1,295 Carats
EQUAL SAY, EQUAL PAY
Tradition too often dictates that the proposer needs to drain his/ her bank account to afford the ring single-handedly. The idea of being gifted a ring may be special, but you’re both entering this marriage as equals, so offering to at least contribute makes perfect sense. If the element of surprise is what you’re after, you can always pay your part after the engagement! Modern day romance still isn’t dead. THINK PRACTICALLY AND NOT JUST ROMANTICALLY
Before splashing out on a mammoth stone, consider whether it’s going to be suitable for daily wear. If your sweetheart is a boxing instructor, then you’re probably going to want to avoid going for a bulky ring that might do more damage than good. There’s no point going for a ring that will be getting in the way of daily tasks. A flat band of small stones may be more appropriate depending on the wearer’s lifestyle. Don’t think size – think wise! ■ 18ct white gold diamond halo ring £1,485 Carats

“We wanted to be sure that our grandchildren wouldbenefit and that our son-in-law couldn’t simply fritter away our hard earned savings”
Trusts for vulnerable beneficiaries MY PROBLEM: My husband, Bob, and I had been conscious for a number of years that we ought to write formal Wills. We have two children who would, naturally, be the beneficiaries, but our concern was that we didn’t feel our daughter’s marriage was particularly secure. We wanted to be sure that our grandchildren would still benefit and that our son-in-law couldn’t simply fritter away our hard earned savings. We’d noticed for some time that there was a problem with our son-in-law’s spending and that this was putting a significant strain on his and our daughter’s marriage. We wanted to provide for our daughter in our Wills, but couldn’t bear the thought of her husband getting hold of her inheritance and wasting it. MARGARET, SUFFOLK
34
HOW IT WAS SOLVED:
We knew we needed to seek professional advice. Our neighbour had used Barker Gotelee to prepare her Will and highly recommended them, so we decided to make an appointment. We were introduced to Lindsey Sharples in the Private Client team who immediately put our minds at ease. We explained our concerns and she told us that this was a common issue, whether it was concerns that beneficiaries are not good at money management, or that they are vulnerable in some way, such as mentally or physically Vanilla January/February 2019
REAL LIVES
ill (including alcohol and drug addiction). Lindsey said that the solution to all of the above scenarios was similar - to protect the inheritance by placing it in trust. The trust would be managed by trustees, appointed by us, who would only allow our daughter access to funds as and when they felt it necessary and appropriate. This could be for things such as house renovations or educational expenses for our grandchildren, as examples. It made us feel so much happier, knowing that our daughter could still be included in our Wills, along with our son, but that her and our grandchildren’s, future interests would be protected.
L
indsey advised that the best solution for us would be to set up a flexible trust and appoint two trustees to administer it. We decided on the two people who we knew would genuinely have our daughter’s best interests at heart: her brother and her aunt. Treating her differently to her brother wasn’t something we wanted to do, but very much felt it was necessary for her own benefit. Lindsey understood our concerns and suggested that we could also protect our son’s inheritance with a trust, which would make it easier to explain the situation to our daughter. Not having done this before, we weren’t too sure how it would work. Lindsey explained that a bank account could be set up with the funds in and our daughter could then ask her
brother and aunt to advance funds to her as and when needed. Of course, we sincerely hope that our daughter and her husband work things out – but if they don’t, the added bonus of the flexible trust is that it is likely to make it more difficult for our son-in-law to claim part of the trust fund in any future divorce settlement. However, we made it clear to Lindsey that our primary aim was to ensure that our daughter and grandchildren were provided for in the way that we would wish, rather than our life savings being frittered away.
L
indsey’s advice definitely reassured us that we were doing the right thing. At long last we made our Wills and Lindsey made sure that the
necessary trusts were included. We explained to our son and daughter why we had made these arrangements. Of course, our son completely understood – he’d also shared our concerns about our daughter’s husband for some time. It also seemed it was a relief to our daughter; her husband had no concern for anything beyond the here and now, and this way she knew some provision was in place for her children’s future. We are relieved that we went to see Barker Gotelee, knowing now that our children and grandchildren can benefit from our hard work and that their inheritance is secure. Lindsey’s help and advice has given us the peace of mind we needed. ■

PEOPLE
HOW ARE YOU STILL SINGLE?
© MICHAEL BANNON PHOTOGRAPHY
How many times have you had this said to you?
H
AVE YOU EVER looked at someone, wondered if they might be single and done nothing about it? ME2WE doesn’t use dating websites or apps and establishes that real connection face to face enabling single people to find each other. Established in 2016 and based on my own personal experiences from online dating, I felt I was banging my head against a brick wall trying to stand out as that ‘nice genuine guy’ against a backdrop of players, who seem to have flooded the market in recent years. I founded ME2WE because online dating lends itself to being exploited by fake/misleading
36
information, this can have a detrimental effect on people’s wellbeing who are genuinely seeking a new relationship. Let’s be honest, rejection hurts irrespective of if it’s face to face or online (it’s easier online as you don’t have to see the person though). This is amplified around big occasions such as Christmas. Remember though, that being single is nothing to be ashamed of, and there shouldn’t be the social stigmas around it that there are. So, what’s it all about and how do you get involved? Unlike online dating, we don’t need to know every detail about you, such as what pets you have or what your favourite colour is, instead all you do is purchase a wristband so that other singles can recognise you and feel more confident in approaching you, think of it as that initial ice breaker. The wristbands are not gender,
race or sexual orientation specific – the idea is that by speaking to someone you will find out if they are your ‘type’ or not. The only requirements are that you are over 18, single and always respectful to each other. Dating and relationships start with being confident in yourself first and foremost, which is why we also host Dating Confident sessions, designed to give you those hints and tips. After all, when you look good you feel good, and when you feel good you attract better prospects. It really does work! an you picture your retirement? In my 20’s I used to tell my Dad that I would be retired at 40. I turned 40 this year and can understand why he simply used to laugh saying “good luck to you.” Back then I thought retiring would mean one long holiday in the sun with maybe a bit of skiing. Now I have children of my own and I know from friends, colleagues and clients that they will be looking to the Bank of Mum and Dad for many, many years to come. I know that the bills continue, that an income will always be needed and should I wish to have the luxury of choice, I need to plan and I need to act.

They are also doing a roaring trade in Himalayan rock salt lamps – which are known for their therapeutic properties. Warm rock salt releases a stream of negative ions which can purify the air against allergens and pollutants, increase levels of serotonin which in turn relieves stress and boosts energy levels. “We are an eco-friendly salon, recycling where possible. We believe that you do not need to compromise on quality to be more conscientious and ethical,” explains Avril. Hear! Hear! n

YOUR BEAUTY QUESTIONS SOLVED ...by Sue Adams and the team at Image
HOW DO I GET RID OF STRETCH MARKS?
Although stretch marks tend to fade on their own over time, prevention is key. We need to bare in mind that lifestyle, moisturising, drinking plenty of water and age are all factors that affect the elasticity of the skin and its ability to bounce back and recover. By looking after your skin and having a healthy life style you can help preserve the elastin, making stretch marks less likely to appear. Try using retinol based gels and creams – retinol is an active ingredient known for helping to promote collagen production and cell turn over. Top tip: Treat stretch marks when they are new and try and keep your weight stable. HOW OFTEN SHOULD I CLEAN MAKE UP BRUSHES?
Regularly! Especially foundation and concealer ones, that means at least once a month depending on how often you use them. Brushes are porous, so they hold onto oils, debris and bacteria. We recommend a weekly wash for brushes that you use around our eyes. The easiest method for cleaning them is using warm water and either a
42
gentle soap, Johnsons Baby Shampoo or a brush cleanser. Best to dry them upside down, this stops the water getting into the glue, where the bristles meet the handle. Top tip: Invest in a good set of brushes and they will last you years. HOW DO I MINIMISE MY PORES?
We all dream of the perfect clear skin don’t we? To achieve this, a solid skin care routine including deep cleansing, toning, exfoliating (at least twice a week to remove dead cells) and hydrating is essential. Another important factor is to remember to cleanse your skin and remove make up after a long day, as makeup will block your pores and lead to blackheads. The condition of your skin is directly related to your health, so drink water like it’s your job, consume plenty of greens, try to get enough sleep and keep the stress levels low. Products containing retinol and collagen are especially helpful. Sun exposure is damaging... period. It can cause skin to discolour and thicken which makes pores appear larger. Using a hydrating cream with high SPF can help prevent this, it’s worth not skipping your daily routine. Top tip: Do your evening skin routine early on in the evening otherwise if you wait until bed time you’re so tired you can't be bothered to do it properly! n

THE BIG FAT FREEZE!
3D-Cryo Freeze: the latest treatment to reduce fat and cellulite
3
D-CryoFreeze is a unique non-invasive treatment using a combination of electro and cryo therapy. Using the 3D-CryoFreeze handpiece, this creates vacuum which draws the fat into the handpiece. This localised area within the handpiece is then frozen, causing 20%-40% of the fat cells in that area to die. 3D-CryoFreeze specifically targets the fat cells. By lowering the temperature to -6 degrees it pinpoints the content of the fat cells, causing them to crystalize. No other structures are affected by this process. The remaining content of the fat cells is then disposed of naturally through the body’s lymphatic system. Only one treatment is required per area. As the body takes several months to flush out the distroyed fat cells,
January/February 2019 Vanilla
AFTER
These pictures demonstrate what overall results can be, but this will vary. It is important you discuss with your clinician what is achievable.
the best results are to be seen after 6-12 weeks. THE PROCESS
The experience is not painful and lasted approximately 40-60 minutes per area. Your clinician will place a glycerine pad on the area to be treated, to protect the skin. During the treatment the fat is drawn into a suction cup before freezing. Within a few minutes the area becomes numb. There is no down time and recovery is immediate. The numbness can last for up to 10 days. Some people may experience possible bruising and redness, but this is rare. The treatment is designed to target stubborn areas that just won’t shift. Typical areas are inner thighs, lower abdomen and ‘muffin tops’ but the clinic is also treating those hard to get to areas
such as double chins and the dreaded ‘bingo wings’. Although 3D-CryoFreeze is a one off treatment, it can be devised as part of a course of treatments depending on your goals. For example if you have a pocket of stubborn fat but also loose skin on that area, it would be advised to combine 3D-CryoFreeze with a course of radio frequency to remove the fat and tighten and tone the skin. 3D CryoFreeze is available st Juliette John Aesthetics Laser Skin Wellness Clinic, The Lodge, Tuddenham Road, Ipswich IP4 3QH. t: 01473 222145 e: info@juliette-john.com www.juliette-john.com

We caught up with Linda at John Olivers hair salon, to give us a few wedding day hair tips. I’M GETTING MARRIED THIS YEAR AND I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT TO DO WITH MY HAIR!
It’s best to plan your wedding hair at least six months before, by booking a consultation with your stylist. This is time for you to go through what vibe you’re going for. If you’re stuck for ideas Pinterest and Instagram are great places to get inspiration. The most important thing is creating something that makes you look and feel your most beautiful. WHEN SHOULD I GET MY HAIR COLOURED AND CUT?
HAIR BY LINZI

DO YOU TRAVEL OR WILL I HAVE TO COME TO THE SALON?
On the day of your wedding we can travel to you. It’s important that you are relaxed and enjoy getting ready… it’s all part of the fun! As well as hair services, we work closely with makeup artist Rachael Todd who can create the perfect makeup look for you and your bridal party.

THE
POSITIVE MINDSET
So what marks have you honestly given yourself and what would you like to achieve this year? Also how are you going to go about achieving it? And how will you feel if you don’t?
COACH L Katrina Love tells us it’s time to do a Lifecheck!
I
T’S TIME do do a Lifecheck. Let’s stop and do a full appraisal and change what needs to be changed. This is your life – you've got time to do this. If not, make the time. WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM 2019?
Grab a pencil and paper (old skool I know) or notes on your phone and let's write this down – you need to write it down so that you don’t forget and it can be a point of reference. We can all take the time to think about what went wrong last year and why this may have made for a difficult and trying year, but I would like you to note down what actually didn’t go well for you. eg: a relationship ending, putting on weight, not doing things that you hoped to etc. So what things didn’t work and why? What could have gone better? What is the lesson there? Now let’s look at the opposite of this – what actually went right? What did you achieve? Eg: getting healthier, improving relationships, getting fitter, great holiday. So think why did you succeed, what worked and why? Now out of 10 (10 being the highest score), rate your self on these: ● Health and body ● Emotional and personal growth ● Intimate relationships ● Social and fun ● Family and friends ● Work and career ● Finances ● Acts of kindness/ giving
January/February 2019 Vanilla
ET’S start with focusing on just one change. Choose which one will make the biggest difference to you. I am imaging the one that will make the biggest difference to all of the others is your emotional and personal growth. Good mental health is more important than anything else. Once you have achieved this it will affect every other part of your life. So let’s look: Who are you? Who would you like to be? What makes you happy? What are you doing for yourself? What do you do to recharge yourself? What do you need? It will often come down to self love, self care and self compassion. Treat yourself the way you would like others to treat you – because your behaviour towards yourself is the bench mark to how others will treat you for sure.
T
O establish a new behavioural pattern it is easier to continue a good new habit if we are rewarded in some way for it. As I am suggesting we start with self care, this should be rewarding enough in itself, but also on a practical level, mark in your diary (or on notes) that you have done it. Try and build up a streak of 10 days and then reward yourself – perhaps put money aside towards a holiday, or trainers, or a day out. 2019 is all about you and your happiness, and your happiness will have a ripple effect on all those that you touch in turn. Happy New You!

WELLBEING
PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT We all love a quick fix, but when it comes to exercise we know it’s perseverance that pays off. So I always say to clients choose something you like doing at a time that you can commit to. And then you’ve got to practice. Everyday find a moment to repeat what you’ve learnt. No need for a home gym or special clothes, just practice as you are. Pilates is a technique that you can bring into your everyday life and the rewards will come. ● Longer and stronger muscles ● A balanced, relaxed but upright
posture ● Easier breathing ● Improved flexibility in the joints ● Less tension in neck, shoulders
and lower back ● A feeling of connection to the
ground ● Better awareness of your body
in space ● A sense of well-being
At Penny Jones Pilates we’ll always suggest safe and effective exercise as homework. We know Pilates will help you to keep living the life you want. If you want to sit at your computer without strain, walk up hills and pick up the grandchildren with ease, or hit a great forehand, Pilates is for you.

ON YOUR MARKS, RESET, GO!
Want to lose weight? Thereʼs a new kid on the block
Bettina dropped two dress sizes in 21 days!
Y
ES YES, we all know that if only we drank more water, got more sleep, jogged sprightly up and down escalators and didn’t drive but walked to the corner shop half a mile away, that we would all be feeling a darn sight better. But sometimes the thrill we feel, as we imagine the results a brand new diet could bring, is what we need to kick-start us into action. With the summer hols mere months away, many of us are trawling the internet in search of a new way to a new bod in 2019. Your eyes may already have landed eagerly upon the phrase Metabolic Reset, one of the

latest approaches to weight loss, and its advocates are singing its praises. We all have a metabolism: those with a fast metabolism burn calories faster than those with a slow metabolism. Although your metabolic rate is mostly down to genes and how much exercise you do, the Metabolic Reset aficianados believe you can trick your metabolism into speeding up which, in turn, burns off the pesky calories in those paninis more quickly. So, what’s the word from those who have given it a go? Bettina Maycock had tried to lose weight with a variety of diets:
none of them worked and usually, frustratingly, resulted in weight gain in the longer term. We've all been there. With a wedding looming three years ago Bettina started a 21-day Metabolic Reset detox which she was told would ‘eliminate unhealthy fat cells and toxins, nourish and cleanse cells and boost energy levels’. Feeling positive about the detox’s effects – Bettina recalls ‘losing weight from tummy, back and bingo arms’ – she continued with the process. Bettina felt ecstatic: “In 21 days I dropped calories and increased my intake of vitamins and minerals. I had more energy, felt happy, my skin glowed and my fat melted away. I reshaped my body – I dropped from size 16 to 12 – and I felt incredible!”
K
EEN TO spread the word, Bettina is now helping others in their quest to lose weight: “The organic micronutrients used, produced by an oncologist and pharmacist, are produced to a very high standard and are suitable for everyone including vegetarians. Some are even vegan”. Bettina herself repeats the detox twice a year to “release all the rubbish, and to have a healthy, happy tummy!” n

STYLE FILE BY DARRELL SMITH ARCHWAY CARPETS, WOODBRIDGE
Invest in quality
Carpets are a major investment for your home; adding comfort, warmth and even soundproofing your space. A good carpet, fitted correctly, can last up to 20 to 25 years plus. But it’s important to get it right – here we give some sound advice…
Bill Oriss, one of Archway Carpet’s skilled fitters
● A badly fitted carpet will wear twice as quickly and cost you more in the long run. We strongly advise that carpets are fitted by skilled craftsmen and professionals you can trust. Archway Carpets only employ professional and quality carpet fitters! ● The location of your new carpet is an important consideration, as carpets located in different areas experience different levels of traffic and wear. All our carpets feature a wear grading and we can advise whether the carpet is suitable for: All areas; medium domestic wear (bedrooms and secondary rooms) or heavy domestic wear (living rooms, dining rooms and halls). ● A new carpet deserves a quality new underlay to ensure optimum performance. A quality underlay will improve the life of your carpet up to 50% and ultimately save you money. ● Carpet is a very good insulating material so reduces heat loss in the home. The material itself is insulating and the structure of carpet – all the tiny fibres – trap air making it even warmer. Underlay also acts as an insulator for your home, providing an extra barrier helping to keep heat in and can help reduce energy costs by up to 15%, so it’s worth buying the best you can afford. ● If you have underfloor heating, you can refer to the tog rating of the underlay to see how suitable it is. We would still recommend that you seek specialist advice from your heating system supplier to ensure you have the best option. ● For more advice on carpets and flooring please call us on 01394 386684. 30 years of experience at your feet really does give you #fashionforyourfloor.

THROUGH THE KEYHOLE ‘Setting the scene’ for professional photographs will help to market your property
with property expert HANNAH COOPE R
A
S THOUGHTS turn to the year ahead, many of you may well be wondering what the year will hold in the property market – I know I am. Brexit (sorry to mention it!) is of course the hot topic and as I write it would seem uncertainty is seemingly the only certainty. Personally I do not think that we will see a drop in property prices in Suffolk by the 30% predicted by Mark Carney late last year. I remain optimistic about our local market, with buyers still moving from London for what they see as value for money. We are still seeing strong demand in areas such as Woodbridge and the surrounding villages and the coastline continues to attract buyers due to the superb lifestyle on offer. I am sure that if properties are sensibly priced and marketed well, they will continue to sell.
58
One of the main changes to take place during my twenty years in residential sales is the amazing photography now used in marketing across advertising, online and social media. Gone are the days of brochures with a few pictures and pages of description, most buyers now do not have the time for long reams of text, they want expertly taken photographs and a floorplan.
I
N AN UNCERTAIN market, the key to attracting buyers is presentation and preparation. It is vital to give thought to the appearance of your home prior to the photographer arriving, which is true for both the interior and exterior. Try to clear away as many personal possessions as feasible, some well-placed flowers will add a touch of colour or consider investing in a fresh lick of paint inside and out – first impressions still make such a difference. As we move towards the spring months, gardens are also an essential area to consider before marketing your home. Whether
it be a small terrace, acres of grounds or anything in-between, all outside space is looked upon as another ‘room’ which needs dressing. This could be as simple as planting a few spring flowers before the scheduled photography day to add some much needed colour in the brochure. All this will help when setting the scene, as quite often we are selling a lifestyle, not just a home. Please contact me if you have any questions about preparing for a potential move as I would be more than happy to help. ■ Hannah Cooper Senior Associate Director Strutt & Parker, The Stables, Wherstead Park, Wherstead, Ipswich IP9 2BJ. 01473 220444

BUILDING UP FROM HUMBLE BEGINNINGS C
HAPEL PROPERTIES, in Woodbridge – one of the region’s most successful design, build and renovation companies – has moved to larger offices to accommodate its growing client base. After starting the business from home in 2014, director Mark Crisp and his wife Ruth, have taken the business from strength to strength. Their unique combination of construction management know-how, flair for design and eye for detail have proven key in winning them business around the region. Over the past four years they have handled some of the most interesting and innovative projects, from refurbishments and landscaping to luxury, high-end new builds. “I think the key to our success is that we love what we do and we always put the clients’ needs first,” says Mark. “We want them to know their projects are in very safe hands. Unlike many other companies we don’t ask for payment up front; clients pay as they go, which enables them to keep control of the budget. Communication is vital in this business, and we ensure that from initial
60
consultation to build completion we keep the client informed at every stage.” So why the move to larger premises? “Business is increasing rapidly and we have taken on additional staff, so we need more room to work, and to grow,” Mark explains. “We also wanted an office where we had space to meet with clients and architects. Our old office on Station Road was getting a bit tight. We are now based in Unit 1 on Quayside, an office we looked at four years ago and thought too big for us! But now it suits us perfectly.” Mark, Ruth and their team have a finger firmly on the construction pulse; so are people renovating and extending their homes these days, or are there more new builds on the horizon? “If you find a parcel of land in Woodbridge it will be snapped up of course,” says Mark, “but we find many people are extending their homes to improve their lifestyle, especially kitchens, family rooms and spaces to entertain.” For more information call 01394 610526, or go to www.chapelproperties.co.uk

2019 HOME TRENDS
LIVING CORAL, aka Pantone 16-1546, has been named colour of the year by the renowned colour matching system. Described as “buoyant, vibrant and effervescent”, the marine tone is predicted to dominate the design industry over the next 12 months. This is a colour that promises paradise. It is a subtle, seductive blend, at once fleshy and ethereal, a colour that Pantone calls “natural” yet which, in reality, is exquisitely refined. It is a colour of escape and safety, a colour you can call home.

HOMES
CORAL CARPETS There are several things to
consider before buying a coloured carpet for your home. The light and space of each room – if it is a small room or does not have any natural light a lighter shade would make it appear lighter and larger; on the other hand a darker shade will give a larger room warmth and cosiness. Coral can be quite a dominant colour as a block – as an alternative, try introducing it into your interior scheme with a sutle pattern where the coral is combined with other neutral shades.

CORAL FURNITURE One of the easiest (yet daring) ways to incorporate this fun and bold shade into your home is with a large piece of statement furniture. Against a neutral backdrop, a couch in a coral tone will add an instant spark of interest while warming up the cool tones that dominate the space. PATTERN & TEXTILES Textiles are a must for any home. Add a punch of coral to your bed or couch with a fun pillow or throw blanket. Or make a statement with one of these funky wallcoverings.

BE BOLD WITH CORAL PAINT Now if you want to go really big and create a room with wow factor, try using the tip above in reverse and paint your walls in a coral tone. Instead of creating a pop of interest in a neutral field, use natural tones to create moments of calm in a sea of colour.

Sam Simpson JMM Suffolk model agency
My East Coast Life JMM is a scouting/model agency, run by Samantha Simpson, formerly New Faces Director at Premier Model Management and fashion editor at Cosmopolitan magazine. At Premier, Sam worked with Naomi Campbell and managed the early modelling career of actress, Gabriella Wilde. After moving back to Suffolk, Sam discovered Vita West in the Wickham Market Co-op. Vita was soon signed to IMG and so far her list of credits include, Harpers Bazaar, Teen Vogue, Top Shop, as well as being a regular on the London Fashion Week catwalks. Sam has previously run the Face of Suffolk model competition. Our winners have all benefitted from her extensive fashion experience and contacts with major agencies in London and abroad, which have led to very lucrative, rewarding, international careers.
a fashion editor (BBC Clothes Show and Marks & Spencer magazine as well), I switched sides, to become a model agent.
How did you get involved in fashion? I started early, with work experience at the EADT when I was 16. I declined a place at university to go to London and pursue my love of magazines. Following a short secretarial course, I got a reception job at Elle magazine where I met so many of my industry idols. From there I joined the Cosmopolitan fashion team, After 10 years as
Is there a lot of untapped talent in Suffolk? Great models are rare. You need to be tall, with great bone structure, smart and grounded It’s often the quiet, studious girls that have what it takes. I can teach them how to walk in heels, to pose and build their confidence. Seeing their confidence grow, is one of the most rewarding parts of my career. Having said that: yes,
there are special girls in Suffolk. I’ve already found several amazing ones! What’s next? Managing the existing JMM girls, I’m here for them 24/7, whenever they have a problem or need advice, to help organise their travel or to share their excitement about a new job. And of course, discovering new girls, I’m looking forward to finding our next great face and shall be scouting at local events.
What are your local hidden gems? I live in Ufford (probably the best village in the world), so the The Crown and The White Lion pubs are favourite haunts. We also have Red House Textiles here, Nick is the most fantastic interior designer. TheBarn.co at Friday Street, just made my Garden Shack from reclaimed timber, windows and doors, it's completely unique. Clothes: Homespun in Woodbridge, I live in their cashmere. ■

Have you always lived in Suffolk? I was born here, I went to Ipswich High School and Felixstowe College. I spent over 20 years in London, but then came home six years ago, after I had our little boy. I love Suffolk!
