FASHION NEWS 3 & 4 OCTOBER
BREAST RECONSTRUCTION PATIENTS TO TAKE TO THE CATWALK Local charity Keeping Abreast who support women considering and going through breast reconstruction due to breast cancer, are pleased to announce that the More Than Just Fashion Shows will return to Norwich in October 2018. The two-day fashion spectacular will be held at OPEN on Bank Plain, Norwich on Wednesday 3rd & Thursday 4th October, and are pleased to announce that tickets are now available. This unique event features 24 local women who have all been through breast reconstruction or preventive breast surgery due to discovery of breast cancer or a faulty BRCA gene, and many of them have been treated by the dedicated staff at the NNUH. Tracey Allan part of the
team organising this year’s shows added “The shows are always an amazing thing to be part of, and the women who model for us are just inspirational. Many of the ladies in the show have never taken part before and have recently had their breast reconstruction operation so it is going to be an emotional ride for them but one we hope they will thoroughly enjoy”. The shows will once again be a mixture of fashion, dancing and entertainment and this year will feature sets from Vanilla, Scarlet, Pollard & Read, Rock Collection, Jarrolds, Philip Browne Menswear and Jarrold Intersport. Standard tickets are £14.50 and include a welcome drink, they are available via opennorwich.org.uk
FASHION FENG SHUI ● Jo Allen, colour
and style consultant, specialises in helping women develop their own personal style from the ‘inside out’ and enjoys tailoring her consultations to each client’s individual needs. In addition to using traditional tools such as colour analysis and body shape/scale/ proportions assessment, which involve making recommendations for dressing the ‘external you’, she has recently added Fashion Feng Shui® to the services she offers, and is the only registered practitioner of this approach to styling in Norfolk. Jo says, “What I love about Fashion Feng Shui is that it’s a very effective way of helping women to discover and understand their style ‘essence’ – what actually matters most to them about what they wear and how they present themselves to the world. I show clients how to mix together a personalised selection of colours, styles, fabrics, patterns, accessories, etc, in a way that works for them as individuals… because, actually, one size does not fit all.” Jo is also currently a director of the Federation of Image Consultants International (FIPI). S WE SASHAY into autumn, it’s time to give a warm embrace to a whole new season of exciting fashion. With rich, sumptuous colour palettes, prints and textures now hitting the high street, there’s so much to look forward to. The stores within Norwich’s favourite shopping centre, intu Chapelfield, are packed with the perfect pieces to help you transition into the next season and beyond. Sheridan Smith, the centre’s marketing manager says; “For me, autumn fashion is all about layering up and adding a few key pieces to my wardrobe. To see me through the season in style, I always try to shop smart at the start of autumn, investing in staples like a new winter coat, ankle boots and knits in the latest shades. And I can never resist a few on-trend items too, with some fun accessories to lift my look. Autumn demands practicality, but I always search-out pieces that make me smile and feel stylish too.”

ANIMAL INSTINCT
It’s all about a fearsome look this season, with animal print absolutely everywhere. If you love it, then you can really go for it, wearing leopard head to toe. For something a bit different, pick a classic animal print in a bright colour. Or for a subtle nod to your wild side, opt for an animal-print bag, belt or scarf.

PERSONAL STYLING
STYLE SECRETS!
“You’ve either got or you haven’t got style...” is how the song goes, but we think style can be taught and there are great people out there to teach you, if you find it doesn’t come naturally. To start you off, here’s some top styling tips from Norwich’s very own Style Queen, Chrissi Rix.
1
Always remember that it is SHAPE NOT SIZE that matters! Take time to discover your shape and how to best dress it. Learn to balance your proportions, disguise your least favourite features and harmonise with your silhouette and you will always look fab!
2
DISCOVER YOUR BEST COLOURS.The wrong colours
can make you look tired, ill, older and sallow. Wearing the right colours will ensure you look your most stunning, glowing and gorgeous! It’s the most important feature to looking and feeling great.

hey say if you keep clothes long enough they will eventually come back into fashion, but does the same apply to eyewear? Well it turns out that it does and in fact Retro eyewear is storming the eyewear fashion houses of Europe. Large bright plastic frames echoing the 80s, bright metals from the 70s and upswepts from the 60s. One of our favourite ranges is from Oliver Goldsmith, who are probably the oldest and most well-known of the British fashion frame companies. Worn by the likes of Audrey Hepburn, Princess Grace of Monaco, Peter Sellers and Michael Caine. Now available in their Original and Genuine collections – classic styles in modern materials, the
perfect classy match. When we started stocking the brighter Retro metals which were originally designed for the guys, we were amazed at how good they look on the gals... aviators in particular. Upswepts however, work just for the ladies, some sweeping and really catseye-like, others more gentle and subtle. One really big difference between the earlier years and today is modern lens materials and designs. Sadly in days gone by, if you had a higher prescription bigger specs were a no- go area. Today with advanced materials and lens designs a whole new world is available for those with higher prescriptions. We’ve said in previous articles that we love people popping into play with the different styles and we are just as happy telling them about new lens designs. Great eyewear is our passion, please do come and share it with us!

MEET
BE BOLD, SIR, IT SUITS YOU!
Meet menswear aficionado, Robert Oliver
R
OBERT OLIVER Menswear, on Sprowston Road, is a world away from dull and generic high street shops where quality is hard to find. Here, the very best quality, originality and personal service go hand in hand, with something for the man who wants to stand out from the crowd. Owner Robert Oliver, originally from London, took over the shop in 2010 and has taken it from an “old man’s” shop to a stylish store that caters for discerning men of all ages. “When I opened the shop
28
my aim was to educate Norfolk men about how to use colour, and not be afraid to be bold and bright,” says Robert. “Farmers and those who live in the country have always had a tradition of wearing bright tweeds and trousers, but I wanted to take this a step further and offer something that would appeal to every man.” Robert Oliver offers a huge range of casual clothing and country wear, such as shirts, trousers, sweaters, shoes, ties and
accessories, plus a selection of suits, in a fabulous choice of styles and colours, all personally selected by Robert. “I insist on quality and source only the best. Shirts and trousers are German, because they are far superior, and material for made-to-measure and bespoke tailored suits are English where possible, from the textile mills of Huddersfield.” “The fact is, men don’t really like to shop, they are lazy, impatient and leave those decisions to the last minute, so we are here to make their fashion and style choices as easy and relaxing as possible. Personal service and superb quality is what makes us stand out from other retailers, and our stock is designed to be quirky, original and interesting – with loads of colour, of course. I currently have some wonderful flowered shirts, and some with owls and cars on. You won’t find these anywhere else in Norwich.”
R
obert offers suits as either off the peg, madeto-measure or bespoke. “We are extremely proud to have our own workroom to ensure the highest quality fit and finish. I work very closely with a bespoke tailoress, Norma Cheney, who has over 50 years’ experience in handmade clothing. “We also do repairs and alterations, so customers can get the maximum lifespan from their clothes. We recently altered a suit for a gentleman that was made 100 years ago, so that shows how a good suit can stand the test of time.” ■

THE TANNERY Quality leather goods – by design £55 Wallet
W
ITH TWO shops in Holt, one in Norwich and a fourth in Woodbridge, owner of The Tannery, Lindsay Furniss, knows a thing or two about fine leather goods and what her customers want. “The range of goods we stock is primarily our own brand, and this includes hand-stitched gloves, handbags, briefcases, luggage, belts, shoes, purses, wallets, plus gifts and accessories such as key rings, jewellery boxes and cosmetics cases. “We carefully control the quality of The Tannery own brand range, and our goods are made by small, family-run artisan workshops in Italy, Spain and France. We work very closely with them, and they share our ideals of quality, always, and help us to create designs that appeal to the widest number of customers. “Unlike many retailers we talk to our customers and ask them what they want – for example the style, colour and type of leather handbag. Or if they want their gloves lined with silk, cashmere or rabbit fur. "We focus on ergonomics, too, such as how a bag feels, how it will be worn, if it’s comfortable. This means we have total flexibility to make a wide range of designs using the widest choice of leathers and colours. It’s a very personal touch and what makes us unique.” Lindsay regularly visits the

European workshops to create the range for The Tannery stores. “The workshops already have a selection of templates and leather samples to choose from, so we are always on-trend. “I select different leathers, linings, designs, detailing such as studs, length of strap for a handbag, or where the vent will go on a glove. Armed with the knowledge I have about what customers want I can build a range that I know will be popular.” Economics also plays a role in what The Tannery produces. “I buy very carefully these days. In an economic downturn, people

tend to buy items that will last longer and go with everything, such as a plain brown or black handbag. But there are still many people who want a stand-out item, or pair of gloves, so it’s a real challenge to strike a balance. “But we continue to offer something very different, because we cater for people who are not driven by ‘brand’, but who want something unique, of superb quality, that will last for years.” ■ The Tannery 12-14 Exchange Street, Norwich T: 01603 661600 www.tannery.co.uk Vanilla October/November 2018

HE OTHER Curator is one of the most original stalls on Norwich Market; its colourful Bohemian chic and quirky style has been wowing customers since July last year when it set up shop there. Like her stall, and the intriguing items she sells, owner and artist Caryn Louis is a one-off, and she brings her own unique sense of style and creativity to complement the bustle of the market. “This is the perfect spot for The Other Curator, because the market is very much the beating heart of Norwich, and people who visit and shop here are original in their own right and march to the beat of their own drum,” says Caryn. “I totally understand this, because I am the same, so I feel completely at home on the market and part of a very special family.” So who are Caryn’s customers and what are they like? “My customers come from all walks of
36
life, and are of all ages, but what they all have in common is they want something out of the ordinary that they won’t find anywhere else – originality is the key. “For example we sell the biggest range of gorgeous and colourful Frida Kahlo cushions and accessories in Norwich, and these are very popular with people of all ages. Frida Kahlo is an icon of ours and many other people because of her individuality and strength. She created her own style in the face of terrible problems with her health, her body and her relationships. “Vintage is huge with people of all ages, and we get a lot of customers wanting affordable vintage-style outfits for day wear or the ever increasing and popular 40’s and 50’s dance nights. “We offer a very personal service to help people find just what will suit their own style. It’s about trust and building relationships with customers. Many have become
regular visitors, some happy in their own skin and some not so much. It’s particularly rewarding when we can work together to find something that will give them the confidence they have never had before. "The smile when a customer comes out of the changing room says it all. We are always honest and would never try to sell someone something that didn’t fit properly or make them look fabulous. Sometimes we even get kisses as a parting thank you! You don’t get that in high street shops, or online, and that’s what makes our approach so special. “The Other Curator is all about making brave choices, creating what is right for you, and making your own proud statement about who you are.” ■

VINTAGE JEWELLERY
Why investing in antique designs is on the rise
A
ntique and vintage jewellery has never been more popular and there are many reasons for this, but one of the biggest advantages of buying older jewellery is that you can all but guarantee that nobody else will have exactly the same piece as you. If you love the look, romance and history of older pieces, there are many compelling reasons to want to own a piece of antique or vintage jewellery. It is often better value, better quality, a unique, romantic, stylish investment and makes for a perfect future family heirloom. Antique jewellery is often the product of remarkably skilled craftsmen, each with individual, intricate designs that represent the style of the era. When you buy an antique piece of jewellery, you are October/November 2018 Vanilla
essentially owning a piece of history, connecting yourself to a historical period of your choosing, whether that be a Victorian treasure or striking Art Deco design. However, it’s not just the aesthetics that are important, there are ethical and moral questions to consider too. The diamond industry, as a whole, is still beset with problems over conflict, smuggling and human rights abuses. Although there have been many attempts to promote ethical diamond sourcing by introducing certification, it has proved to not be completely reliable, meaning you can never truly be sure that the purchase of a new diamond isn’t contributing to unethical procedures elsewhere. When you buy antique jewellery, you are essentially
recycling existing diamonds, meaning your lifetime investment doesn’t mean a lifetime of poverty and suffering for someone else. Experts say the ethical benefits of second-hand pieces has definitely contributed to the rise in demand for vintage jewellery – making it an attractive choice, especially for wedding and engagement rings. Albrow and Sons have always bought and sold antique jewellery and silver and have one of the largest selections in East Anglia. They are experts in gems and at their Norwich shop the choice of jewellery is second to none... a true treasure trove! Albrow & Sons, 10 All Saints Green, Norwich 01603 622569 www.albrowjewellers.com

“Equity release is a way of releasing some of the money, or equity, in your home which then allows you access funds without the need to sell your property.
Using your home to generate income MY QUESTION: My husband and I want to help our two grandsons get on the property ladder by supporting them financially with the deposit. We would also like to treat ourselves and go on a cruise now that we are retired. How can we raise money from our assets to do so?
46
ANSWER: Equity release is a way of releasing some of the money, or equity, in your home which then allows you access funds for you and your family without the need to sell your property. There are two types of Equity Release which are the Lifetime Mortgage and the Home Reversion. This article will concentrate on Lifetime Mortgages which are the more common type of Equity Release. Lifetime Mortgages are mortgages which are secured on your property and only repaid on your death or when you move out of the property. There is usually
no monthly mortgage payment during the mortgage term but interest does continue to accrue on top of the loan amount. As the interest is not paid, the amount owed to the lender can increase very quickly.
O
NE difference between a standard mortgage and a lifetime mortgage is that you are only able to take out a lifetime mortgage if you are over the age of 55 or 60, depending on the lenders criteria. In contrast to this, a lender will usually only consider a standard mortgage if the borrower will be working and Vanilla October/November 2018
REAL LIVES earning sufficient income over the full term of the mortgage and is therefore frequently below the age of 65. The amount which can be borrowed against the property will depend on a number of factors including your age at the time of taking out the lifetime mortgage. The younger you are when taking on the lifetime mortgage, the smaller the percentage of the value of the property will be that you can borrow. This is due to the fact that the interest will be accruing for a longer period of time and therefore the equity in the property will be reducing down for longer. The lender will want to ensure that when the mortgage is repaid, there will be enough equity in the property to repay the mortgage. Different lenders will provide lifetime mortgages with different terms and some will allow people to pay interest during the mortgage which can help to reduce down the amount outstanding at the end. You may also be able to borrow a smaller amount at first with the option to borrow more later on which could also help reduce down any interest payable at the end of the mortgage term.
T
HERE are some disadvantages to a lifetime mortgage, which should be carefully considered before going ahead. The first downside is that the cost of repaying the lifetime mortgage can be very high. This is due to the fact that the interest rates are often high and is charged on the total figure of the initial lump sum plus any previous interest as shown in the
October/November 2018 Vanilla
example below. e.g. If borrowing £50,000.00 with an interest rate of 8%, the total owing over the next five years will be as follows:Year Year Year Year Year
1 2 3 4 5
£50,000.00 £54,000.00 £58,320.00 £62,985.60 £68,024.45
There are also often large early repayment charges should you wish to pay off the lifetime mortgage prior to the end of the term.
A
NOTHER downside is that it is often difficult to obtain permission from the lender to port the lifetime mortgage to a different property should you decide to move house, perhaps deciding to downsize in later life. The Lender will only agree to port the lifetime mortgage if there is sufficient equity in the new property, which may not be the case should the new property be smaller and therefore perhaps of
less value. Most Lenders will have a condition within the mortgage which states that if the property is vacant for a certain period of time, they will require repayment of the mortgage. This can cause difficulties for people who have been taken into hospital for a long period of time or have been moved into a nursing home. As the amount to repay is frequently a large sum of money, this will often mean that the property will have to be sold. It is also important to be aware that receiving a lump sum payment from a lifetime mortgage can have an effect on any means tested benefits which you receive from the local authority or government. Before going ahead with a lifetime mortgage, it is important to take advice from an independent financial advisor who will be able to advise you on whether a lifetime mortgage is the best option for you. ■

A SHARP FOCUS ON SUPERIOR HOSPITALITY
Meet the entrepreneur that's taking the city by storm
OTELIER and restaurateur, Dennis Bacon, is one of Norwich’s most successful entrepreneurs, and is responsible for three of the city’s most high profile businesses; boutique hotel 38 St Giles Street, Alchemista Coffee Co, and the Orford Flat Iron restaurant. Over the past three years Dennis has been very busy improving his properties, and also acquiring more. “We have undertaken extensive refurbishment and expansion of 38 St Giles, and I believe this has created the very best five star boutique accommodation experience in Norwich, and certainly the best breakfast! I have also acquired a luxurious Grade II listed apartment and beautiful early Georgian town house along St Giles Street, right in the centre of the city.” Dennis’s other businesses are also thriving. Alchemista Coffee on St Gregory’s Alley, which opened in September 2017, has proved to be a tremendous success with both locals and visitors alike. It’s already rated the No. 1 coffee shop and cafe in Norwich by Trip Advisor. “We are planning a much larger Alchemista with an enhanced food offering for the group’s new hotel site on Surrey Street, next door to the bus and coach station,” says Dennis. “In addition, Alchemista will soon be launched as a
48
nationwide franchise, and this is a reflection of the huge interest in both the brand and product. “The ambition is to create the best artisan, high-quality coffee experience on high streets, where passion and attention to detail is evident, regardless of whether you visit an Alchemista in Norwich, Nottingham or Dundee!”
O
RFORD FLAT IRON in Orford Yard has been the most testing of Dennis’s Norwich businesses. “Finding the right Manager/Chef proved a huge challenge, so the business is being relaunched Mid-October
with new proprietors, Jorge and Eleanor Santos. Their wealth of experience in hospitality and passion for creating great food should ensure a superior experience for city foodies.” Trading under the new name of Jorge’s, Jorge and Eleanor will be retaining some of the great steak options that have proved so popular, but with the addition of new and exciting dishes that take inspiration from Portugal and Southern Europe. “They will be introducing some fantastic culinary fusion, eclectic tasting plates and a range of high-quality, great value wines,” says Dennis. “The whole team is looking forward to launching the new restaurant, menus and wine list in good time for the start of Norfolk Restaurant Week, which kicks off in November.”
S
O A SUCCESSFUL but very busy time ahead for Dennis, but his vision is to focus on quality ahead of scale. “I believe it’s impossible to scale hospitality without compromising quality, unless there is a keen focus on culture. This involves not just the professional competence of staff, but their skills and how they make customers feel. This will be key to the success of all businesses and in delivering a consistently excellent experience.” ■ Vanilla October/November 2018

PET TRIBUTES
Pet tributes can be a comforting way of remembering and celebrating the life of your pet
T
HE BOND between animals and humans is amazing. In many households pets play an important role and therefore remembering them in a personal and affectionate way through a celebration is a wonderful way to acknowledge the loyalty and pleasure they have given us. Unfortunately, the joy of owning a pet goes hand-in-hand with the heartbreak of losing one, whether because of old age, illness, or an accident. This can be difficult, after all, family pets are the first to greet you in the morning or when you come home. Your pet may be the one your child looks to for comfort and companionship when ill or feeling unpopular or upset.
October/November 2018 Vanilla
While it’s impossible to shelter children from the loss of a pet, you can help them cope with it. And because a pet’s death might be their first time losing a loved one, the grieving process can help children learn how to cope with other losses throughout life. Pets@Peace work in association with Celebrate in Norfolk and provide pet tributes for all types of pets. They also recognise the excellent work that animal charities do in the county by supporting two local charities Redwings Horse Sanctuary and PACT; but if you prefer you can nominate the charity of your choice to which they will make a donation at the time of booking. A Pets@Peace celebrant will
prepare a script and celebration, to help you remember your pet and companion, giving you and your family the opportunity to thank them for being constantly by your side. This can be as personal and individual to you as you would wish and the ceremony can be at your home or other suitable venue. ■

The Monte Carlo name relates back to the very long and successful rallying career of ŠKODA, so the look is sporty, enhanced by the black roof and privacy glass. It’s all tied together nicely with the black door mirrors. The headlamps and low fog lamps to the front integrate into the front streamlined styling and at the rear, the spoiler and the rear diffuser in black completes the look. Combined with the LED lamps, which feature the ŠKODA ‘C’ shape when illuminated, the rear of the car is as distinctive as the front! Inside the styling continues with nice touches like the multifunction sports steering wheel with red stitching and the super
Monte Carlo seating, comfortable and stylish. And on the subject of seating, being a ŠKODA, there are always little surprises that show just how much thought the designers have given to day-to-day use, such as the umbrella stowed under the passenger seat! Now, how many times have I reached my destination as the heavens opened and caught me unprepared? And what’s more, the passenger seat is also provided with height adjustment; not something seen on many vehicles in this class. The same can be said for the provision of cruise control – an asset for longer journeys – cousin Hermione could employ that to make sure she

DISCOVERING MY VOCATION
by masseur and personal trainer, Tracey Meades After many years of working within an office environment, local woman, Tracey Meades, decided on a complete career change. Having experienced the benefits of Personal Training to help manage her own back condition, she decided to study to become a Personal Trainer herself with the ambition of helping people in a similar position. While working with clients who had a range of conditions and injuries, she decided to focus on injury rehabilitation and in December 2016 she went on to qualify qualified as a Sports Massage Therapist. Here’s her story...
M
y story begins when I was 12 years old. I can vividly remember where I was and what I was doing when the first pain shot through my lower back. I was scared and confused because
56
I had no idea what was happening. Little did I know what was to come. I spent the next few years being seen by doctors, physiotherapists and having x-rays but no one could tell me what was wrong. I struggled through school, then through work, miserable and in constant pain. The lowest point came when I turned to take a towel off the bathroom radiator and was unable to walk for several weeks – I had to be carried everywhere – and then ended up on double walking sticks when I was eventually able to stand up again. I didn’t know what to do. All I wanted was an explanation but no one seemed to be able to give it to me until eventually I met a lovely Chiropractor called Roger who wrote a letter to my Doctor insisting that I be given an MRI scan immediately. And I couldn’t be more grateful because I finally got my diagnosis. I have a progressive, degenerative spinal condition that I
was born with. The prognosis I was given was not overly positive and I had two choices – to curl up under the duvet and let the world pass me by or get out there and live. I chose the latter and decided that I wanted to be in a position to help others, the same way I was helped, which is why I trained to become a Personal Trainer and now also a Sports Massage Therapist. The pain has never left me since that first day but I am determined that it will not stop me from doing anything, or helping other people. And it never has. ■ Tracey Meades Physical Therapy, Sports, Indian head and Deep Tissue massage. Rowan House Centre, Hethersett. Rowanhousecentre.co.uk

These conditions can cause pain at the back or at the front of the pelvis with pain sometimes extending to the lower back, groin and/or thighs. Some of the contributing factors include having had previous problems with the pelvis and/or lower back and the pelvic joints moving unevenly. For some women the pain will resolve after giving birth, for others it can continue after delivery and affect subsequent pregnancies.

REAL LIFE
Psychotherapy: Can it solve the problem?
Therapist Shane Lutkin reflects on past cases
A
s a busy psychotherapist, I’ve listened to hundreds of client issues over 1000’s of hours. Not one of these people has been the same and all of their stories have been unique. The way we work through each client’s concerns is also specific to each individual’s situation. Despite this, looking back on my years as a therapist, I do see a pattern emerging. Upon beginning their sessions with us, clients often display a ‘stuckness’ and rigidity that cripples them. During their time at therapy, many clients undergo real, life changing experiences. Recently, I reflected on some of the more striking cases. There was the insensitive workaholic who was so emotionally stuck he couldn’t love his children: “My family has really seen the change for the better. My profession is high pressure, and at work I’m more considered, considerate and constructive.
58
Crucially, I have genuinely got in touch with my true feelings, learned to empathise and now I am very close to my children.” I’ve seen many students, but one client, I remember clearly: “I was really quite disorientated… very insecure, dejected and feeling pretty hopeless. I had just completely messed up my A levels. I was initially doubtful if Shane could help me, but slowly we worked through my issues. Originally I talked about going into the army to get a trade… I craved stability... security. I was lost. I can remember being encouraged to think creatively and discover what I truly wanted. Eventually, I realised I was underselling myself. I started to believe in myself and was inspired to resurrect my education. I am now at Cambridge University. I don’t think I’d have applied if it had not been for Shane.” Many years ago I met a
woman who was incredibly sad: “As a child I was treated severely by most people, including my own family. I was bullied at school and then at work and controlled by abusive partners. My self-esteem was incredibly low and I felt truly worthless and hopeless. I felt I didn’t deserve anything better. I just couldn’t cope with my life. The therapy took a while, but now I have faith in myself. In the past I’ve gone from one boring job to another. Now I have got a career that I enjoy, which has prospects and makes me feel like I’m making a difference. I’m kind to myself, I’ve got nice friends and I give myself time to do things that I really want to do.” Indeed, my story is similar in some respects to all of those above. I thought that I was what I was and nobody could change me. I have moved on, radically. What I do believe, and what I have repeatedly witnessed, is that no matter what walk of life we are from, with the right help, support and desire to change, it is possible to ease our issues and in most cases, overcome them. ■ Shane Lutkin is Lead Therapist at psychotherapy organisation, Emotionalskills. LAKING ART INTERIORS
Owner, Chris Graham, clearly has a passion for interiors here at Laking Art, in the historic Georgian town of Holt. The shop has an eclectic mix of objects – some old, some not so. Chris enjoys putting a look together and in principal sees himself as a “dresser” of things both precious, beautiful, and in some instances the ordinary that he likes to display “in a manner
64
that enables the object to shine a little brighter.” The shop is stocked with furniture, both modern and antique, lighting, artworks, soft furnishings, mirrors, or simply anything that stirs Chris’s interest. Sourced on his travels as well as auctions and fayres, he also has some brilliant contacts for ex-display furniture from leading brands.
This lovely little new showroom and online shop is a rare selection of beautifully crafted goods – affordable gifts, delicate heirloom pieces and antique textiles. All of the products are handmade and they are ‘One-of-a-kind’, Fair Trade and/or upcycled – designed and created to support education and employment for marginalised people (everywhere!). Forever Green!
Jewel Beetle
The renowned Little Greene paint company, has launched 20 new paint colours inspired by our most-loved National Trust properties. They have researched the National Trust’s most cherished houses and gardens throughout England, Wales and Northern Ireland to find original colours, and to tell the stories of the people who first enjoyed them. Beatrix Potter’s farmhouse, George Bernard Shaw’s writing hut, Winston Churchill’s croquet pavilion and Lady Macbeth’s dress are among the inspirations behind Little Greene’s timelessly elegant new paint range. Little Greene has identified a selection of 31 beautiful greens, each with a noteworthy origin, and each with an important place Puck in contemporary interior design. Within the selection are 20 National Trust-derived shades, as well as several important greens from Little Greene’s archives and the current colourcard. The collection is loosely arranged to represent each of the key green families: grey greens, neutral greens, yellow greens, blue greens and turquoise greens.
Wormwood and Edith’s Eye
A contribution from the sale of every can of Little Greene paint will be made in support of the National Trust’s conservation work, ensuring the nation’s historic houses, gardens and open spaces can be enjoyed for generations to come. Little Greene will also support the National Trust’s conservation and restoration programme by donating paints to bring colour and life back to some of the UK’s most loved properties.

A SLICE OF MEDITERRANEAN HEAVEN
W
HEN you think of Norfolk plants what do you think of... mustard? Certainly. Turnips? Maybe. But olives? Never... yet Norfolk husband and wife duo, Paul and Antonia, have built a business specialising in olive trees – from young fruiting trees to ancient gnarled specimens. The olive tree has for a long time been part of myths and legends and stories date back as far as the goddess Athena who is said to have made a gift of an olive tree to the city of Athens. The olive tree has also famously been represented in art with perhaps the most famous being Vincent Van Gogh who was so obsessed by their beauty he painted a series of 18 paintings. Many people think olives are fragile and demanding plants that need permanent sunshine but that is not the case. Olive trees tolerate a wide range of temperatures and
78
can withstand frosts down to -15°. They are also extremely drought tolerant so are the perfect tree for our climate as well as being low maintenance, and as an evergreen tree they provide year round colour and structure to the garden. The Norfolk Olive Tree Company also has a selection of hardy palm trees and Mediterranean plants chosen by the award-winning couple because they are UK hardy, evergreen and provide architectural interest year round. Antonia and Paul have also won several RHS awards and offer a garden design and build service, transforming your patch of grass to Mediterranean class. FIVE REASONS TO PLANT A TREE
1 Trees increase property values. Increase your kerb appeal! The beauty of a well-planted property and its surrounding street and neighbourhood can raise property values by as much as 15 per cent. 2 Trees clean the air by absorbing
Husband and wife duo, Paul and Antonia Smith, share their passion for the olive tree
odours and pollutant gases (nitrogen oxides, ammonia, sulphur dioxide) and filter particulates out of the air by trapping them on their leaves and bark. 3 Trees block out eyesores such as concrete walls and free you from the gaze of nosy neighbours and unsightly views. 4 They muffle sound from nearby streets and roads, and create an eye-soothing canopy of green. 5 Trees absorb dust and wind and reduce glare. If you want to invest in something beautiful but want to take it with you at every stage of your life, then the olive tree is perfect. Olive trees have a small root system and can be moved and transplanted with you at every chapter of your life. They are evergreen and hardy adding year year long colour and value to your property. ■ For more information go to thenorfolkolivetreecompany.co.uk Vanilla October/November 2018

OYSTERS Tips on how to cook and serve them!
Oyster season is just around the corner. Remember that Oysters should only be served during months with the letter ‘R’ in them! Oysters are considered one of the world’s most luxurious foods. They are low in fat, high in protein and are considered a good alternative to meat as they are rich in iron. Oysters are traditionally served with mignonette – a condiment to accompany raw oysters. Michelin Chef Steve Smith shares his top tips on how to serve oysters. Now, the world really is your oyster… ADD TEQUILA
Liven up with your oysters with tequila! A tequila lime mignonette can be easily made by mixing together 2 tablespoons of tequila, 2 tablespoons of lime, zest of half a lime, 2 tablespoons of finely chopped shallot, 1 tablespoon of chopped coriander and a pinch of salt. Mix it all together then serve with freshly shucked oysters.

DEEP FRIED
You do not have to eat oysters raw – fried oysters make a great snack! Cover your oysters in plain flour, beaten egg and bread crumbs then deep fry for 1-2 minutes until they are crispy. A TOUCH OF FIZZ
and simply serve with lemon juice. If you prefer a saltier flavour rather than sour, place a teaspoon of seaweed butter on top of each oyster and warm for 3-4 minutes. THE ALTERNATIVE
For a truly indulgent oyster dish sprinkle Parmesan cheese over the oysters. Drizzle with melted butter and season with pepper then grill the oysters for one minute.
Oysters and Champagne are a classic pairing so why not add some fizz to your mignonette? To create the mignonette, mix together Champagne vinegar, finely chopped shallots, cucumber, salt and pepper then allow to chill in the fridge. Add the Champagne to the mignonette just before serving. KEEP IT SIMPLE
If you want to keep the flavour minimal, lightly warm the oyster through

Coming soon to the Royal Arcade!
T
HIS AUTUMN, an exciting new business will be joining the other high-end companies in the Royal Arcade, bringing something completely new to Norwich. The English Chocolate Company offers a quintessentially English experience of an old-fashioned style tea room, which also sells a fantastic range of exclusive handmade gourmet chocolates, cakes, fudge, ice cream and much more. Andrew Stott, the company’s Director of National and International Operations, said: “The English Chocolate Company is English to the core, everything we make and sell has been designed and made in England, by us, and we are hugely proud of that fact.
86
“We are thrilled to be a resident of the Royal Arcade, it is one of the most prestigious and historic locations in the UK, and we know we will be very happy there. Our aim is to offer Norwich something they have never seen before, celebrating the wonderful English tradition of taking tea with proper china cups and table cloths, but giving it a modern twist for a very forward-thinking city. “Everything we make is bespoke, exclusive and cannot be found anywhere else. This means the quality of the chocolates, cakes, ice creams, teas, coffees and hot chocolates we offer is second to none. There is also a strong focus on ethics; our packaging, where possible, is biodegradable and ingredients are
all ethically sourced. The whole experience will be wonderfully refreshing for customers after the rather soulless chain coffee shops which are everywhere.” And bespoke means bespoke! “If you come to the shop and tell us you would like a particular flavour of chocolate, we will be happy to make it for you. No other chocolate company can do that. We are very proud to have our own English chocolate chef, who designs the flavours, and our fudge is handmade in England, with some incredible flavours such as Jack Daniels and Strawberries and Cream.”
T
HIS mouthwatering offering is sure to be a big hit in Norwich; the city does, after all, have its own chocolate making history. Plus of course the wonderful setting of the Royal Arcade will be perfect for this very English business. “I am proud to be English and we have the most fantastic talent and produce in this country, so we are more than capable of creating delicious, elegant and exclusive products here. The English Chocolate Company is a small chain and we will also be opening shops in Eton, Banbury, Oxford and Salisbury.” ■ LUCY OHSTEN

WHAT INGREDIENT DO YOU THINK WILL BE THE NEXT BIG THING?
Blackcurrants, for many reasons including health and lifestyle perks but also for its strong tart flavour.
WHAT INGREDIENTS DO YOU ALWAYS HAVE IN YOUR STORE CUPBOARD?
Balsamic vinegar, I will always find a use for balsamic vinegar whether it’s to enhance the flavour of steaks and fish, drizzled over strawberries or even in an ice-cream. WHAT DO YOU EAT AFTER A HARD DAY IN THE KITCHEN?
I like to keep it simple when cooking at home after a long shift. Nothing beats a quick omelette packed with flavour (ham, chorizo, red onion and cheese).

“The more I’ve cooked the more I’ve found to give food less fuss and let the true flavours shine through”
NORFOLK IS FULL OF GREAT FOOD AND DRINK PRODUCERS. ANY RECENT DISCOVERIES YOU CAN SHARE?
WHAT TYPE OF COOKING DO YOU ENJOY THE MOST?
Living and working on the north Norfolk coast, seafood is defiantly a passion. Freshly local caught bass or some beautiful fresh cromer crabs.
Coming into the colder months, Brancaster mussels will be in full flow. Simply cook in white wine, cream and garlic and enjoy with a slice of crusty bread. ■ The Olive Tree, 1 Bacton Rd, North Walsham NR28 0RA t:01692 404900 www.theolivetreenorfolk.co Vanilla October/November 2018

A
T TIMES, I am a shockingly boring vegetarian cook. Full disclosure, the contents of my fridge at the time of writing amount to some spuds, tomatoes, a jar of olives and a rogue bottle of Tabasco sauce. Plainly, I need to up-skill. If you’re new to vegetarianism, you’ve one in your family or you’re a long-time veggie like me, cooking can be a chore. Because honestly, what do you make when your vegan friend looks up from your risotto with that “not again” face? Chris Avey is the owner of the River Green Café in Trowse. An expert chef and vegetarian of over 30 years, Chris went vegan a year ago and is our tutor for tonight’s class. We’re going all-out on flavour, something which non-veggies seem to think is sorely lacking in meat-free food. It’s just not true! I’m here for the Middle East and October/November 2018 Vanilla
African Workshop, just one of a few different classes that are available at River Green. We'll be learning how to make rich, smokey baba ghanoush, aromatic tagine, fresh minty salads and sweet, nutty baklava. A welcome glass of wine and our small group of four is soon folding brik pastries. A little like samosa, these beauties are packed with pine nuts, raisins and parsley and seasoned with north African spices. They take moments to cook and we eat them smothered with a lovely aubergine dip. Meanwhile, Chris explains the origins of the cuisine and casually demonstrates a groundbreaking way to chop onions and tomatoes. Yes, we’ve been doing it wrong all our lives. But no, there still isn’t a way to stop the onion eye-sting, our photographer is crying! The slow-cooked tagine stew that we're shown has
orange juice in it, who knew? The mysteries of these foods are unravelled as the apricots, harissa and pomegranate syrup all go in to the pot. You'll get to sample whatever is made at the class, which we gladly do. The finished tagine, a fresh mint salad, stuffed aubergine, they’re all vegan and they taste amazing. You'll leave with a head full of ideas and tips from this course and for everyday use in the kitchen. Most importantly, you'll take home an instruction pack which means you can finally throw away your well-worn risotto recipe for a much more exciting and impressive vegan feast. REVIEW: HEIDI SECKER

The great team at The Fox at Lyng
G
REAT TEAM WORK, dedication to the community and a passion for superb food is what it’s all about at The Fox, in Lyng. This traditional pub offers a delicious modern British menu… restaurant quality no-frills food at pub prices. But it has also embraced the popularity of world foods, most notably with a street food night every Monday, which has proven phenomenally successful. Owner Vikki Hunt, who also owns The Lodge in North Tuddenham with her husband Gavin, says. “We wanted to bring street food here because it has become so popular as a style of eating, with big favours and it’s fun and relaxing. We started to do it last year over the summer and it’s been the most successful thing we have ever done. “Every Monday we close the kitchen and bring in one street food vendor to serve food in the
92
garden. During this last incredible summer it was packed here on those nights, and we served 350 on bank holiday Monday! People come from miles around and vendors are queuing up to cook here. “Here at The Fox we work very hard on team inclusion, which means everyone here is able to brainstorm and put forward ideas to improve the pub. One idea that has come out of that is themed nights, which we hold on the last Sunday of every other month. “Customers now comment on how happy the staff are, and that is absolutely fantastic. They don’t just work here, they are invested in its success and taking ownership.” No wonder, then, that The Fox reached the finals of two prestigious awards – The Great British Pub Awards, in the ‘Best Community Pub’ category; and The Norfolk Food & Drink Awards, ‘Best Family Dining Pub’ category. “Reaching the finals was a
wonderful achievement. We have entered these awards before, but never got this far.” Community is huge at The Fox, and they go out of their way to help those in need. One of their own chefs, Justin, aged just 41, recently had a stroke and the pub has raised money for equipment to make his life easier. Gavin has rennovated a specially-adapted home for him next to the pub. “There is a wonderful community spirit in Lyng and we like to be part of it. Recently we held a Great British Fox Bake Off, which created as much buzz as the TV show. Richard Bainbridge was one of the celebrity judges and we raised £3,000 for charity.” Big flavours, big hearts and big ambitions too! ■ LUCY OHSTEN The Fox at Lyng, The Street, Lyng, Norwich NR9 5AL t: 01603 872316 www.thefoxatlyng.co.uk Vanilla October/November 2018

BY STE VE HE ARNDEN We have just enjoyed one of the hottest summers for some time, drinking lots of chilled rosé and white wines, but light reds have also been very drinkable. Now, however, we are gearing ourselves to the festive season and need to plan and prepare ourselves. Wine is a perfect gift but deciding what to give is difficult and so...
FÛT DE CHÊNE £13
CUVÉE X 2007 £22 2009 £23
My first choice would be a red wine from the Cahors region of France. Due to the rise in popularity of the wines from South America Malbec grape wines have become very popular. But the Malbecs’ real original home is in France! Chateau Famaey is a family run business and their Fût de Chêne is outstanding. The 2012 is drinking well now but will keep in the correct conditions for years. Worth considering for a little investment? However this dark red wine has complex aromas, wood, cherries and summer fruits all wrapped in spice. Allow this wine to breathe for a few hours in a cool place and then taste. A mouthful of fruit, herbs and spices; very balanced tannins with a soft but firm aftertaste – it lingers in the mouth and then just glides down! It is almost pure heaven in a glass. And at 13% alcohol it can pull a mean punch! It is only surpassed by the Cuvée X, which is their special cuvée. The 2007 and 2009 will keep for years, if you let it, but drink it now with some good, well seasoned food.

Rosie Kefford Owner of Rosie’s Hair, Beauty & Make-up
My City Life Rosie Kefford, is 29 and owner of Rosie’s Hair, Beauty & MakeUp Studios in both Norwich and Beccles. She’s a multi awardwinner in her industry: makeup artist, beautician, official HD Brows stylist and also a mum to two year old Jax.
Was it always your passion to run your own business? I had always dreamt of running my own business, but until I was about 20 years old, a hope and dream was all it ever was. It wasn’t until I decided to leave employment and set up a mobile beauty business that I started realising it could actually become a reality. After nine months of being mobile I went on to open my first salon. You have been in the beauty business for 12 years. What changes have you seen since you started? The most noticable change is the nail and brow industry. A normal polish is almost a thing of the past now. We use and love CND Shellac gel which lasts up to two weeks but is gentle on the nail plate. Full brows have become a fashion accessory over the years. Since training as an official HD Brows stylist, during the week my diary is fully booked with brows! It is such a popular seven step treatment and I love seeing the transformation process.
What makes Rosie’s unique? All of my staff are trained in every aspect of the hair and beauty industry, however, we all have a specific treatment we specialise in too. We are proud to offer unique hair and makeup packages plus a glitter bar especially suitable for weddings, parties and nights out. We offer such a huge offering of services, you can be completely pampered head to toe all under the same roof by the same team of staff. What do you do to keep clients coming back for more? There is always something new to try when visiting and we constantly keep up to date with the changing industry by training
in the latest treatments for our customers. We also offer a very rewarding loyalty system. Any future plans for Rosie’s? With both salons going from strength to strength and waiting lists regularly being held I am focusing on expanding our team and the exciting new services and events we will be offering and attending in 2019. What do you love about Norwich? I love the hustle and bustle, the people and the opportunities the city offers. I am blessed to be situated in the beautiful Norwich lanes surrounded by such wonderful independent businesses, it’s my favourite part of Norwich. ■ www.rosiesnorwich.co.uk
