Stylistically Speaking... BY FASHION-LOVER K AREN WOLFF E VANS

Support your local retailers (and probably save the planet)

H

ERE’S THE THING, you can always track down something you want on the internet and often at a cheaper price, so what’s the problem? and what’s the cost? I thought I’d present the case for supporting your local retailers after we posted a message on Instagram in support of shopping locally and it got a bigger response than anything else we have ever posted. So what’s going on? We have stores in two fabulous market towns, Woodbridge and Saffron Walden. What makes both locations special is firstly, the gorgeous historic architecture and traditional layout and secondly, the butcher, baker, candlestick and dressmaker independents who line the streets and provide a friendly, colourful shopping experience. Being human, we like the shopping experience and interacting with other humans. We like to walk through shelves dripping with goods and stare into shop windows and touch what we’re buying. It’s a far better experience to buy a fridge from a salesperson with product knowledge (“this is our most popular model”) or the fishmonger to choose your fish (“caught this mornin’ madam”)

18

or your local bookshop (“ooh I couldn’t put it down”) or dress shop (“no, you’re bum does not look big in that”). I like to find something I didn’t know I needed, I’m sure you’re getting the picture. I’m not a dinosaur, I do appreciate the convenience of the internet and when I can’t find what I’m looking for I will go online and track it down. But if shops are used as libraries to find something, take down the details, then buy it online, we will lose them.

I

F SHOPPING as we know it becomes a thing of the past, we will tell our grandchildren about the old days when you could walk into a lovely shop and try a coat on before buying it. Department stores are closing, putting people out of work and losing the revenue and taxes they generate, while Amazon don’t seem to pay tax, or train young shop assistants.

Without sales, independents will struggle to pay rent and rates and soulless retail parks will flourish. What will become of your High Street? Try and imagine it full of charity shops or converted to residential. Where’s the experience in that? If you feel, as my Instagram followers do, that shopping is a sociable and enjoyable experience and that town centres should still be the beating heart of the community, then we’ll be delighted to show you the wonderful new collections now in our stores, along with a welcome cup of coffee, a smile and personalised fashion advice (none of the above available online!) Retailers, shopkeepers, sales assistants, window dressers, expertise, advice, a smile, a chat, a new discovery. Things that help make this planet lovely to live on. Worth saving don’t you think? ■ Karen from Fanny and Frank, Woodbridge and Saffron Walden

Tonal dressing – by which we mean either wearing multiple shades of the same colour at once (think lemon, buttercup and saffron), or sporting the same hue top to toe... think white on white. Tonal dressing offers a colour matching hack. Does dove-grey look good with charcoal? Without a doubt. Does navy go with sky-blue? THREE TOP TIPS FOR CHIC TONAL DRESSING

Add a print: Throwing a print into the mix really brings a tonal look to life. While wearing all one shade makes for a sleek ensemble, a jazzy pattern will not only add another dimension to your outfit, but will also grant it a more casual edge. Throw in Metallics: Metallics also offer an effective way to break up a monochromatic outfit. Think grey and silver, camel and gold or brown and bronze, or a metallic bag will do the trick. Use neutrals to tone down combos: What better way to fight autumnal blues than by wearing a bright colour head to toe? Use your trusty grey, navy and camel pieces to counterbalance bolder colours. Cake & Catwalk Customers not data! ...this is my buzz phrase for the season. As a retailer in a challenging urban town, off the high street and all the negative press, we have to work harder, give more and offer better to our existing customers and strive for new ones. Although I have to use Facebook, Instagram and email out newsletters, face to face interaction is so much nicer. Not only do you get to meet interesting people, you get to listen, learn and share. I love to be of service – not only with fashion and style advice or with our gift wrapping and great service – but with all kinds of information that has been shared with me. You don’t get that with Amazon or Boohoo. Using your shop not only as a selling space but trying to be more effective. I have the luxury of a garden, which I not only offer out to charities and organisations, but hold music gigs in. Our whole street is working towards better communitybased events to encourage more footfall. We have now formed an official community interest company (CIC) to hold regular street markets and hopefully get funding in an attempt to reverse negative retail forecasts. Getting compliments from new and existing customers about how lovely Cake & Catwalk is and how the shops here offer something different from the High Street’s, is music to my ears. So no matter how many ‘likes’, ♥, followers, shares etc. it’s important to value every person who walks into your shop, they are gold dust. LYNN TURNER

THE TANNERY Quality leather goods – by design £55 Wallet

ITH TWO shops in Holt, one in Norwich and a fourth in Woodbridge, owner of The Tannery, Lindsay Furniss, knows a thing or two about fine leather goods and what her customers want. “The range of goods we stock is primarily our own brand, and this includes hand-stitched gloves, handbags, briefcases, luggage, belts, shoes, purses, wallets, plus gifts and accessories such as key rings, jewellery boxes and cosmetics cases. “We have total control over the quality of everything we stock, and our goods are made by small, family-run artisan workshops in Italy, Spain and France. We work very closely with them, and they share our ideals of quality, always, and help us to create designs that appeal to the widest number of customers. “Unlike many retailers we talk to our customers and ask them what they want – for example the style, colour and type of leather handbag. Or if they want their gloves lined with silk, cashmere or rabbit fur. "We focus on ergonomics, too, such as how a bag feels, how it will be worn, if it’s comfortable. This means we have total flexibility to make a wide range of designs using the widest choice of leathers and colours. It’s a very personal touch and what makes us unique.” Lindsay regularly visits the

European workshops to create the range for The Tannery stores. “The workshops already have a selection of templates and leather samples to choose from, so we are always on-trend. “I select different leathers, linings, designs, detailing such as studs, length of strap for a handbag, or where the vent will go on a glove. Armed with the knowledge I have about what customers want I can build a range that I know will be popular.” Economics also plays a role in what The Tannery produces. “I buy very carefully these days. In an economic downturn, people

tend to buy items that will last longer and go with everything, such as a plain brown or black handbag. But there are still many people who want a stand-out item, or pair of gloves, so it’s a real challenge to strike a balance. “But we continue to offer something very different, because we cater for people who are not driven by ‘brand’, but who want something unique, of superb quality, that will last for years.” ■ The Tannery 6 The Thoroughfare, Woodbridge T: 01394 388884 www.tannery.co.uk Vanilla September/October 2018

“Thanks to Barker Gotelee, my daughter can stay with me regularly again”

Putting paid to parental alienation OUR PROBLEM: Sarah and I separated a couple of years ago. We have a daughter – Bethany – and, when we split, we came to an amicable agreement that meant I was able to see Bethany regularly. Nine months ago, I met my new partner and, although Bethany hadn’t met her, when I told Sarah about my new circumstances a few months on, things started to change. Sarah made a number of excuses for me not to see Bethany and, based on a couple of things Bethany mentioned about what mummy was saying, I realised Sarah had taken the news about my relationship negatively, trying to punish me by not letting me see my daughter and turning her against me. MATTHEW, IPSWICH

30

HOW IT WAS SOLVED:

When Sarah and I separated, we worked hard to make sure we did the right thing by Bethany. Then only two years old, we knew she would be able to adapt well to our new circumstances and we agreed that, while she would live with Sarah, Bethany would spend every other weekend, plus Tuesday and Wednesday nights, with me. Our arrangements were working incredibly well, right up until I told Sarah that I had met someone new. I explained that things were moving slowly and that I wasn’t in a hurry for Bethany to meet my new partner – I wanted to make sure the relationship was for the long term before I introduced her into the mix. After that, though, Sarah started making excuses for me not to see Bethany. One week Bethany would have a cold, the next she had Vanilla September/October 2018

REAL LIVES a party to go to, and so on. Each time, I suggested that I could still look after my daughter – I could be the one to take her to events and I could certainly care for her when she had a cold. Eventually, after a few weeks off, I did see Bethany, but she seemed a bit distant and a little wary. She also mentioned that Sarah had told her I wasn’t a good dad anymore and that I didn’t have time for her.

U

PSET, I CALLED my sister and told her what had been happening. She suggested Sarah may have been trying to distance Bethany from me – something she’d seen her friend go through too. She asked her friend’s advice, who told us that she thought I should see a solicitor straight away. I got in touch with Barker Gotelee and went to meet with Carol Robinson the next week. Carol told me that what I was experiencing was a concept known as ‘parental alienation’ – something that is actually quite common. She explained how important it is to act on cases like mine quickly, so that any potential psychological damage to children involved is limited. She said it certainly sounded as though parental alienation was happening in my case and talked me through what we could do to put things right. These included initial negotiations with Sarah, and if they failed, a round table discussion between myself, Sarah and our legal representatives, mediation or, ultimately, going through the Courts.

I

T WAS CLEAR that doing nothing wasn’t an option – I wanted to make sure Bethany wasn’t affected and, at only four years old, hopefully any harmful views would quickly be forgotten. I didn’t want to go through the Courts either, as this would take a long time and would also be costly. Carol explained that, as a member of Resolution, Barker Gotelee is bound

to deal with things in a constructive and non-confrontational manner. She also said that, as Sarah and I had been able to work through our initial separation amicably, to start with, she would recommend we try the round table approach. I agreed, so Carol drafted a letter, laying out my concerns and explaining to Sarah that denying contact with me was not in Bethany’s best interests. Carol detailed the options ahead for Sarah, saying that I would prefer to resolve things amicably and offered a round table discussion. She recommended that Sarah also seek legal advice and suggested that her representative also attend. After initially denying that she was doing anything wrong, Sarah appointed her own solicitor and they agreed to meet with Carol and myself, at the Barker Gotelee offices over coffee and biscuits. After several weeks and two round table

sessions, we reviewed our original arrangements and agreed a way forward. Carol drafted a Contact Agreement for us both to sign, highlighting that, while it was not a legally binding document, it would have the effect that it was to be adhered to. It also meant that, should proceedings become necessary in the future, the Agreement could be offered as evidence of our intentions at the time we entered into it. So, if there was no significant change in circumstances, the Court could make an Order in the same terms. This would then be legally binding and enforceable. Carol advised me to contact her straight away if things slipped again but, three months on, everything is going well. Thanks to Carol and the friendly team at Barker Gotelee, Bethany is happy and regularly staying with me again. n

THE NEW-LOOK CORNHILL

Ipswich is changing - New business, new opportunities and a new look town square

illa Van PORT RE

A

S ENGLAND’S oldest continuously inhabited town and home to worldacclaimed culture, food and drink with a rich multicultural history; surrounded by beautiful Suffolk countryside and coast, Ipswich has always had a lot to offer. However, anyone who has visited Ipswich town centre in recent months can’t have failed to notice that there is a huge transformation under way with the aim of providing a focal point for the town as well as transforming Suffolk’s county town into a thriving retail and commercial hub. The major refurbishment

32

scheme is set to bring the “wow factor” to Ipswich, injecting new life in to the heart of the town centre, opening it up for new businesses, new events and new opportunities. With a completion date set for the end of October 2018, it will become a place for visitors to eat, shop and enjoy themselves, with plans in place to host special events throughout the year. The new-look Cornhill was designed by architects Hall McKnight and constructed by local contractors Brooks & Wood. It features four striking ‘celebratory columns’ inspired

by the four figures on top of the Town Hall and the town’s historic gates. A water feature with jets of water which, when the jets are choreographed will deliver a dazzling display. Seating and new paving alongside five colourful ornamental maples (Acer Platanoides Emerald Queen) will bring year-round interest to the space. The project is being coordinated by Ipswich Borough Council on behalf of the Ipswich Vision Group and is being funded by the Borough Council, New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership, Suffolk County

Council and Ipswich Central. It will give local businesses, particularly retailers a boost. News of Ipswich’s transformation has already helped to renew interest in Ipswich as a retail and leisure destination, as two large national and international brands have recently announced new stores in the town. Work to convert the former Grimwades department store into a new 150 seat Prêt a Manger restaurant and take-away has already begun, and a new

Hotel Chocolat set to open its doors on Tavern Street in midSeptember. Established names like Debenhams, Marks and Spencer, Pandora, Jack Wills, Tessutti, Joules and Office mixed with our unique collection of independent shops and eateries, alongside recent multi-million pound investments in Sailmakers and the Buttermarket shopping centres make Ipswich a vibrant place to eat, shop and enjoy. n

IPSWICH IS CHANGING... THIS IS ONLY THE START As the historic, financial and administrative centre of Suffolk, Ipswich has now become one of the fastest growing urban centres in England and has huge potential for growth. It is home to the highest number of National Portfolio Organisations in the region including DanceEast, the New Wolsey Theatre and the Pacitti Company the company behind the Spill Festival. Ipswich’s economy is growing fast with many other recent and planned investments getting under way, as well as new retail and leisure facilities. After Cambridge, Ipswich has beaten its larger neighbour Norwich, to be named second best performing urban centre in the country, according to The UK Powerhouse study published recently. The report reveals that Ipswich had the secondhighest GVA growth rate (a measure of the value of goods and services produced) recorded in the UK in the first three months of this year (2.5%). The redevelopment will represent the vibrant, thriving community that Ipswich really is. Visitors and residents of Ipswich who are interested in updates on the development can find information online at www.allaboutipswich.co.uk/ cornhill

The school of choice

LEARNING SCHOOLS

WHICH IS THE RIGHT SCHOOL FOR MY CHILD?

O

NE OF THE BIGGEST decisions you make as a parent is deciding where to enrol your child to school. The limitless questions which arise through the process, knowing which one is best and which one worst, all combining factors to make it a stressful step for all involved. With the overall aim that your child is as happy as can be with the final outcome, the vitality of ensuring they are at the best place for them is key. So what is important when choosing a school? Endless questions can be posed at this stage, all with such a limited time frame to find the answers to. Most of us have been out of the schooling scene for some time, and a lot has changed. So take this chance to sit down with your partner and prioritise

September/October 2018 Vanilla

what you want for your child from the academic institution which you will choose. Are there any schools that family or friends have recommended? How are local schools performing on an academic level? Also think about how your child will be getting to and from school, distance plays a role in the decision process. Nicholas Weaver, Ipswich School Headmaster, said: “At Ipswich School we truly believe that school should be an enjoyable place where pupils receive a broad education that fires their imagination and develops their personality. We encourage teachers to stretch students and we make sure we provide pupils with an environment where they feel safe and brave in all they do.” Principal of St Joseph’s College, Danielle Clarke adds:

“Topping league tables is only one measure of a school. We are equally happy to be known for our caring approach, warm atmosphere and inspirational teaching. We believe the vast and diverse range of opportunities offered to our students prepares them for the future, helping them become well-rounded, productive members of society at a time when the world is changing as never before.” VISITS

Whether it be for enrolment in pre-school, junior, primary or high school, school visits play a key role in the decision making process. These visits allow you to get a real feel for the environment and pose questions such as do you feel welcome, personally and culturally? Are the teachers

35

The Education issue If you can’t look back on a visit and feel a warm glow – possibly wishing that you had had the chance to go to a school like that – keep on looking.

keen and well informed? And whether or not there is a friendly, open, respectful communication between teachers and children. It is a crucial time to become informed on the facilities in place, as well as school activities available, allowing you to make a judgement on whether your child will be most happy in that environment and whether they will be able to flourish with the opportunities given. Choosing a school is as much a matter of the heart as the head. If you can’t look back on a visit and feel a warm glow – possibly wishing that you had had the chance to go to a school like that – keep on looking. Remember you can speak to your local authority, get access to local league tables to find out exactly which schools are performing best both academically and within other areas such as sport. In choosing a school you should focus primarily on people. Not just the head but other key

36

people. Ask to meet the pastoral leaders or teachers in key areas where your son or daughter has a particular passion. Parents are often swayed by facilities (and of course facilities have to form part of the consideration) but ultimately great facilities have no positive effect whatsoever without good people. Our advice would be look beyond the facade of any school. Will they nurture your child and really bring the most out of him or her as an individual? THE SHORTLIST

Once you have visited the local schools and got a feel for what each one is like, it is then best to draw up a shortlist, abandoning those you did not warm to and beginning to look deeper into those you admired. At this stage, talking to other families whose children go there can be helpful, giving you first hand advice on the school from both a parent and child perspective. As well as this, visiting further open days or

information evenings can be vital in filling up the last few gaps in knowledge, enabling you to feel more confident and comfortable with where to enrol your child. PRIVATE SCHOOLS

Whether it’s additional languages, earlier morning drop-offs or comprehensive online parent portals, the sector’s reputation for choice is holding up well, says Janette Wallis, senior editor of the Good Schools Guide. “Analysing the last three years’ exam results will give you valuable academic information, but softer issues regarding school life are vital for making children feel settled,” confirms Wallis. If you are considering boarding, ask current boarders what the food is like and find out what they do at weekends, to find out what school life is like from a pupil themselves. And of course when choosing a private school, fees and value for money have to be taken into account as you are paying for what you can comfortably afford and want to get the most out of it that you can. It is also important to get a feel for how each school is progressing, www.telegraph. co.uk/education/leaguetables provides accurate league tables in ranking of academic performance. n For more useful information on choosing a school visit gettherightschool.co.uk

alented skier and Ipswich girl, Jasmin Taylor is the first Briton to win a World Championship medal in telemark skiing. She has achieved 4 World Cup victories, across all 3 disciplines and has 22 World Cup podiums to her name. Jaz, 25, is five time British Champion and 2013 French Cup Champion. She finished second in the Parallel Sprint and third in the Classic overall World Cup 2017/18 standings. Jaz joined the British Ski Academy as an athlete aged 12, competing as an alpine skier. After becoming the youngest British Ski Cross Champion ever, aged just 15, she made the England Freestyle Ski Team in 2009. It was during this time Jaz started telemark skiing, a discipline for which she showed potential on a far larger scale. Telemark skiing is both graceful and beautiful to watch; the free heel allows the knee to bend further into the turn which creates a unique ‘lunge’ position. During a telemark ski race the competitor must keep the perfect lunge with a foots length gap between the front and back leg between turns. During winter, she bases herself in Chamonix, France, and is currently training for the World Cup season and the 2019 World Championships. study Sport & Exercise Science as a She is also a part time student at the University of Suffolk. Moles can also be removed for cosmetic reasons using local anaesthetic. Some ‘moles’ can be easily shaved off and cauterised requiring no stitches. Others may need more comprehensive surgery with stitches, and histology reports. Histology reports are when the removed lesion is looked at under a microscope at a local hospital, and a report is sent to Suffolk Medical Clinic with details of whether it is anything to be concerned about. If it is, the clinic will arrange further follow up and

ALICE’S WONDER HAND! New Ipswich practice for talented medical tattoo artist

T

ATTOOS HAVE become a very fashionable part of our culture for both men and women, and the younger generation have embraced this colourful body art as their own form of expression. But tattooing can be used for more than just decoration. Alice Nicholls of AN Beautiful Tattoos is a medical reconstructive tattoo artist and permanent make-up specialist who is using her incredible skill and artistry to create natural skin tones for people who have lost skin pigment after illness, scarring or skin disease. “I started regular tattooing

about 13 years ago, but I wasn’t satisfied and wanted to push myself and the business further,” says Alice. “So I branched out into permanent make-up, working a lot with cancer patients who had lost their eyebrows after chemotherapy, and it was incredibly satisfying to see them more confident and so happy to have their eyebrows back. I knew I wanted to do more reconstructive tattooing and help a wider range of people. “I now perform not just brow, eyeliner and permanent lip treatments, but also scar camouflage for general scarring, stretchmarks, burns, surgical

and vitiligo using bespoke flesh tone pigment to recreate the illusion of regular skin tone. “I also offer areola and nipple reconstructive and cosmetic enhancement tattooing for those who have had a mastectomy, mastoplexy (uplift), mammoplasty (reduction), gender reassignment, repigmentation (as they can become translucent with age) or just a general cosmetic shape change. I quite often do heart-shaped nipples, you’d be surprised how many I’ve done!” Alice’s skill has attracted the attention of a military surgeon, who she is working with to Vanilla September/October 2018

CAN YOU RECOMMEND A STYLE THAT I CAN DO MYSELF?

A super sleek low pony tail would be perfect for you! Start by blow-drying your hair with a straightening balm such as Goldwell Just Smooth Flat Marvel (£12.50), then use GHDs to make your hair poker-straight. Part hair into a strong middle part then gather your hair into a low pony. Dare to bare HOW DO YOU GET A BODY THAT’S FIT TO FLAUNT?

I

t’s the bane of many women’s lives – those lumpy, orange peel like dimples that make themselves at home on our thighs and bottoms. In other words... CELLULITE! But there are ways to minimise their appearance through a combination of healthy eating, exercise, body care and creams. That said, it’s important to remember that cellulite affects around 85% of women and it’s nothing to be ashamed of! But there are easy ways to help minimise the appearance of cellulite.

DRY BRUSH YOUR BODY In essence, dry brushing is a combination of exfoliation and massage that involves taking a dry brush and moving it over your body in slow, circular motions two to three times a week. ● The firm bristles of the brush give your skin a thorough exfoliation, while the pressure helps to stimulate your circulation and lymphatic drainage, which can help the body eliminate the toxins which can contribute to cellulite.

52

● It’s best to do this before you shower, for about three to five minutes. ● But be gentle, don’t press too hard and definitely no scrubbing. You’re aiming for gentle exfoliation! RELAX YOUR MIND & SOUL We’re often guilty of rushing around like crazy, without ever finding time to relax and unwind. But that kind of lifestyle can lead to our bodies becoming super unhealthy. When we feel stressed, we produce cortisol and this chemical is pumped around our body. In addition to causing a host of other problems, cortisol can actually encourage our bodies to store fat. And as more fat accumulates, so can the appearance of cellulite. Yoga can help reduce stress and moving from pose to pose can help increase circulation and the flow of lymphatic fluid. EMBRACE HEALTHY EATING While cellulite can target anyone, whatever their weight, it makes sense to opt for a healthy diet. ● Increase fruit and vegetable intake, especially blueberries,

strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, and cranberries. ● Reduce simple, processed carbs which can cause high blood insulin levels and promote fat formation. ● Instead, choose small amounts of whole grain low GI carbs such as multi-grain bread, sweet potato and legumes to help stabilise blood sugars and insulin levels. ● Include healthy fats. Replace saturated fats with healthy omega-3 fats such as oily fish, flaxseed, fish oils and nuts. UP YOUR EXERCISE GAME ● Find a sport or class you absolutely love and find the time to get involved. ● Firming the muscle underneath the cellulite will help smooth the skin’s appearance. ● Focus on strength-training moves that build up hamstrings, quads, buttocks, and hips. ● Aim for training the lower body at least twice a week, increasing the weight over time to challenge your muscles. ● Interval training – which involves varying the intensity of your activity – is a great way to burn body fat. n Vanilla September/October 2018

SKINCARE SUPERHEROES Antioxidants – the most effective skincare ingredient ever?

W

E ALL KNOW that they are supposed to be fantastic for good health, but the hype around them being great for your skin is a relatively new thing. So, why are they so great? And what can they do for your skin? It’s all pretty scientific but we will keep it as easy as possible. It simply comes down to the atoms in our skin; the free radicals to be more specific. A free radical is an atom that is unbalanced, and usually has an electron knocked off, so they go around stealing electrons of their neighbours creating a chain reaction that causes instability within your skin balance. It can cause damage in the DNA of our cells and elastin and can cause alteration in collagen. So how does the antioxidant come to the rescue? Well, it neutralises the free radical and supplies it with the missing electron. It prevents and protects – happy atom, happy skin! So yes you need to be using a topical antioxidant, but ideally an oral one too, so they both work effectively and give the optimum protection against the free radicals! Eating the right foods will always help, but you should also be taking them in supplement form – and taking a wide variety of them, not just one. For example, Vitamin C alone won't give your skin the protection it needs. Find a supplement with the most complementary combination for your skin!

VITAMIN C

The buzz word (or letter!) for the summer. It is this year’s up-and-

54

coming product, and helps the anti-ageing process by firming, tightening and illuminating. The body does not produce Vitamin C, so we have to harness it through our topical skin care, diet and supplements. It stimulates collagen and is as essential as an antioxidant; protetcting against those free radicals and UV light. Another fact? It’s also great for sunburn! VITAMIN A

Vitamin A tends to be a more underrated antioxidant, yet it has very strong characteristics. It prevents premature skin ageing, caused through exposure to UV light, pollution and other external stresses. And although you might not see them, it also protects you from infrared rays that produce a huge amount of free radicals.

ENVIRON

Antioxidants are the must-have game changer in the skincare world. Sue Adams, owner and director of Image Beauty Salon and Glow Clinic, has been using them as her secret weapon for fantastic skin for years, both products and a cocktail of supplements. Sue tells us: “The science and drive behind Environ skincare, and because of the antioxidants they use within their products, mean that false promises are no longer. With these superheroes, they do exactly as they say and I’ve found the results are incredible!”. If you would like a free consultation to start your journey to healthier, youthful and glowing skin, contact Glow Clinic and book in with one of their specialists. glowclinics.co.uk

ID YOU KNOW that in the UK, couples lose 44 days on average in the baby’s first year? But interestingly the father might lose even more if he attempts to keep up with his pre-child socialising. At best, consuming even little alcohol can result in some sleep disturbance, and at worst, even induce sleep disorders. Not at all helpful with a crying new baby to soothe around the clock… One new dad decided to go alcohol free when regular colleague-pub-beer pressure made after work drinking an unhelpful habit for new parenthood. Read the first part of his story here. The (Alcohol Free) Guide for New Dads, is for those who often find themselves having to, or wanting to stop drinking – yet face the same peer pressure as everyone else. The guide also includes advice on how to smoothly handle social situations and friends’ requests for new dads to drink. ● Download your free guide from oneyearnobeer.co

COULD GOING ALCOHOL-FREE MEAN BETTER PARENTING? w

I ALWAYS WANTED to be a good dad – and I always envisaged myself being one. But in the early days I was so deep into my career in the city - which as a broker meant a lot of time spent working hard, with early starts and evenings dedicated to entertaining clients. I was wrapped up in the identity of alcohol, and of myself as a “successful provider” for my wife and new daughter. So there was this constant tension – with my wife on one side, who was cooking a meal for me and waiting at home. And on the other all my colleagues and mates saying – “Just have one more, come on, don’t be a p*ssy – what’s wrong with you??” I was stuck between thinking - are my mates wrong, or are they right and my wife is some kind of psycho? Inevitably… I took the more “fun” option – which meant a lot of calls to my wife Jen saying “I’m stuck at the office again.” Or, “The trains are delayed again”. One thing that makes me cringe

to look back on now, was our first NCT class... I’d been out since the beginning of a long lunch, when I put my whisky glass down at around 6:30 and said “F*ck!” as I remembered I had somewhere to be… I turned up absolutely steaming. All the guys there thought it was hilarious. My wife didn’t, and all the other mums thought I was an idiot too. By the time my second child was on the way, my drinking had calmed down a bit – but not by that much. It was her arrival that really made me think it was time for a change. Still, I was up against such incredible pressure, socially and professionally to keep drinking the way I was. When I told my boss I was thinking of knocking drink on the head for a bit, he said it was – and I quote: “commercial suicide”. I was worried myself too – of losing my edge as a broker, of losing friends – of becoming boring. But I decided to take a break from drinking anyway – and everything changed for the better. It’s such a massive contradiction between the mindset I had then and the one I have now. I could deal with my frazzled wife – who should be frazzled! She’d only been sleeping for a few hours a night. I could be there to help other humans navigate these difficult waters. I could get up in the middle of the night, instead of her, when the baby started crying. Literally, everything changed... ”

THE

POSITIVE MINDSET

COACH

Katrina Love looks at the link between diet and your mindset

Happy Food Having worked for many years as a life coach and therapist I have become more and more aware of the link between our diet and our mindset. Our brain is estimated to use 20% of our resting metabolic rate averaging at about 400(or more) calories per day. But we don’t just need those calories for our brain to function – it also needs good nutrients (so put down that biscuit package you were just reaching for). If I described these classic symptoms to you; mood swings, sadness, angry outbursts, weight loss/gain, lack of energy, interrupted/needing

more sleep and memory loss (to name but a few), I wouldn’t be surprised if you came to the conclusion that these were signs for depression and/or anxiety. But this is also what happens when you do not have the right nutrients to feed your brain. Many of us, when we think about changing our eating habits get caught up in the idea of dieting – which can be off-putting and instant pressure. What if you look at this idea from another angle? What if you were able to change the way you think and feel about food? What if we became aware of what effect that each food group has on you? For example, too much wheat could make you really bloated. Or sugar, when you start, you may just have to keep on and on eating it... The results of this are not happy making! So remember the food that you choose to eat next will not only have an impact on your physical health but very probably your head space too... Happy foods are thought to include; bananas, berries, quinoa, turmeric, apples and walnuts. Time to get happy... Bon appetite!

Katrina offers 1:1 Skype and telephone counselling sessions as an alternative to group sessions. Contact Katrina for more information: Katrina Love BSc (Hons), MUKCP, MBACP t: 07747 345 384 www.katrinalove.co.uk

It is not strictly true to say that Victorian plumber, Thomas Crapper invented the toilet or the water closet. Such devises were actually in use in the finest homes when Thomas Crapper opened his first showroom. New Windows, New Home

Class is in the glass... what a transformation

WHERE: Traditional cottage, Aldeburgh CONTRACTOR: The Burgess Group THE PROBLEM: After two years in their delightful home in Aldeburgh on the Suffolk coast, the Berminghams could no longer put up with their windows, which were suffering from rot and extremely draughty (not much fun with those winter North Sea winds). THE RESULT: “Being a traditional cottage, we felt it was important to replace the old, rotten windows with something in keeping with the original style,” Mrs Bermingham explained. She visited The Burgess Group showroom to see their timber casement windows and doors and found they were “very high quality and visually exactly what we were after”. Now her home not only looks gorgeous, it stays toasty warm in winter, too.

STYLE FILE BY HOLLY PAGANI INTERIOR DESIGNER AT SALT INTERIORS

Pattern in Fashion!

I

OFTEN SEE interiors fabrics which I think would look great as a dress or a shirt, much like Julie Andrews in the Sound of Music! Well now my wishes have come true… GP&J Baker, stalwarts of the interiors scene, have collaborated with H&M to create a fashion collection celebrating some of their most iconic patterns and prints. There are nine different fabrics in total which have been transformed into a collection of sophisticated dresses, blouses, trousers and t-shirts. Classics such as Oriental Bird, Blossom and Hydrangea Bird have been re-sized, re-coloured and printed onto fashion fabrics. These designs were originally drawn up in the early 1900’s and based upon Chinese hand painted wall coverings. Back then they were scaled down and softened to suit the Edwardian interior and now this has happened again for a newer younger audience. Patterns like Magnolia are still stunning, with bold colours that look fabulous in a simple setting. I find it very exciting that fashion and interiors can meld together so well and delighted that these heritage prints and patterns can stand the test of time so well. I also like the fact I can co-ordinate with my cushions!

The Boot at Freston The

Vanilla Reader Review

T

HERE’S a big buzz about the Boot. This once ancient inn atop Freston Hill, a few miles down the river Orwell from Ipswich, had been closed for almost a decade but with big dreams, big ideas and big plans, the new landlord – Mike Keen formerly of the Brewery Tap – has re-opened a

72

new Boot with enormous energy and enthusiasm as Britain’s first cashless pub. With stunning views over the Orwell Bridge the Boot is both diner and proper pub, plus much more. There’s lots of outside space with a petanque court, kitchen garden with corn as high as an elephant’s eye, chickens and sheep in the paddock and a pet raven. There’s also a boutique vintage 1930s style 15-seater cinema in one of the outbuildings with a weekly programme of films on show, plus quiz nights, and plans for wedding tipis in the fields leading down to an orchard. The food is obviously the draw, as it was when the Keen family ran the Tap on the waterfront.

The menu centres on pub classics done to perfection with a Boot-twist. Fish and chips, a ‘Bootyburger’ and proper ploughmans line up alongside ingredient-inspired dishes based on the seasonal fare from the kitchen garden and local producers, and fittingly for a view of the river, plenty of fish.

A

S ALL good pubs do, there’s an extensive array of gins for your aperitif – the delightful Suffolk Gin is new on the block but absolutely refreshing with raspberries and mint. The starters include Tempura soft shell crab with garlic mayo, or roast sardines on toast with a lemon butter. Vanilla September/October 2018

FOOD

Elton Mess

The confit guineafowl leg was moist and meaty and served with a bacon jam. Ham hock rillettes were served with tomato chutney, basil dressing and garlic rosemary bread and chickpea and fennel seed chips were accompanied by a sriracha mayo. There’s a big choice of mains. The succulent sirloin steak, branded BOOT, and cooked to perfection was matched well with a piquant pink peppercorn sauce and parmentier potatoes. Leek stuffed squid, poached in cider, with squid tempura on a mash with leek sauce brought together flavours and textures in a really inventive and interesting way. Brill was served with cider crab beurre blanc and a crab risotto, September/October 2018 Vanilla

and two good vegetarian options on the list – a mushroom dopiaza with onion bhaji or garden tomato, shallots, garlic and cavalo nero with spaghetti.

T

HE BOOT’S speciality dessert this season is the Elton Mess, named after the dessert chef Elton. Paper thin shards of white meringue, spliced with rich strawberry jam, a gorgeously fresh sorbet with a hint of basil, lashings of cream and fresh berries, was delightful. There’s also a lush crème caramel served with a thick shortbread biscuit, or dark chocolate brownie with ice cream. The Boot is especially child-

friendly – there’s a children’s menu and the Sunday cinema shows lots of children’s films. They are also very dog-friendly, perfect for those arriving on foot from a walk from the nearby Suffolk Food Hall or exploring the Shotley peninsula. There are footpaths leading from the pub down to the River and through the ancient Freston Woods. With a roaring trade for brunch, lunch and dinner booking is very much advised. The buzz about the Boot is welldeserved. REVIEW: LOUISE CULLEN The Boot, Freston Street, Freston, Suffolk, IP9 1AB 01473 780722 www.thefrestonboot.co.uk

OYSTERS Tips on how to cook and serve them!

Oyster season is just around the corner. Remember that Oysters should only be served during months with the letter ‘R’ in them! Oysters are considered one of the world’s most luxury foods. They are low in fat, high in protein and are considered a good alternative to meat as they are rich in iron. Oysters are traditionally served with mignonette – a condiment to accompany raw oysters. Michelin Chef Steve Smith shares his top tips on how to serve oysters. Now, the world really is your oyster… ADD TEQUILA

Liven up with your oysters with tequila! A tequila lime mignonette can be easily made by mixing together 2 tablespoons of tequila, 2 tablespoons of lime, zest of half a lime, 2 tablespoons of finely chopped shallot, 1 tablespoon of chopped coriander and a pinch of salt. Mix it all together then serve with freshly shucked oysters.

DEEP FRIED

You do not have to eat oysters raw – fried oysters make a great snack! Cover your oysters in plain flour, beaten egg and bread crumbs then deep fry for 1-2 minutes until they are crispy. A TOUCH OF FIZZ

and simply serve with lemon juice. If you prefer a saltier flavour rather than sour, place a teaspoon of seaweed butter on top of each oyster and warm for 3-4 minutes. THE ALTERNATIVE

For a truly indulgent oyster dish sprinkle Parmesan cheese over the oysters. Drizzle with melted butter and season with pepper then grill the oysters for one minute.

Oysters and Champagne are a classic pairing so why not add some fizz to your mignonette? To create the mignonette, mix together Champagne vinegar, finely chopped shallots, cucumber, salt and pepper then allow to chill in the fridge. Add the Champagne to the mignonette just before serving. KEEP IT SIMPLE

If you want to keep the flavour minimal, lightly warm the oyster through

Sarah Carless Clinic Director, Health Counts

My East Coast Life

What brought you to Suffolk Sarah? In the late 80’s I was the National Franchise Manager for a chain of aesthetic and weight loss clinics. I opened up the Ipswich branch, and liked the town and area so much that when a chance came up for me to be involved in my own outlet, I jumped at it when

How did you first get into the laser & aesthetic industry? Our clinic in Ipswich already employed doctors as part of our weight-loss service and my father’s company made aesthetic lasers. These lasers were so powerful you had to be a doctor to use one, so when I knew he made lasers for tattoo removal and that no one in Suffolk was offering this service I decided to add this to our portfolio and we’ve never looked back!

Health Counts has been situated in Arcade Street since 1990 and before that, The Buttermarket. You must have seen significant

changes in your industry since then? Absolutely! Some good, some bad. But plenty of positives including new treatments using different lasers and the addition of products like Botox and dermal fillers. People don’t have to put up with the things that bothered them 30 years ago, whether its unwanted facial hair, acne or a tattoo they don’t like.

What do you think will be the next big thing in aesthetics? I think better regulation of who delivers treatments, especially injectables, is on its way. Most patients want to be sure they’re getting treated by medically qualified experts in their field.

What do you love about Ipswich? The people. I’ve worked all over the UK and the friendliness and down to earth qualities of the people here are second to none!

On your days off where do you like to go? To be honest, we spend most of our spare time at home. Between our two children, two cats and two mini horses, and the delights of overlooking the Stour Estuary, we’re pretty much at our happiest pottering around the Peninsula! n Health Counts, 14 Arcade St, Ipswich IP1 1EJ t: 01473 250233 www.healthcounts-ipswich.co.uk

Sarah Carless, Clinic Director at Health Counts, has been at the vanguard of the aesthetic & skin laser industry here in Suffolk. Her clinic, Health Counts, has been providing aesthetic treatments since 1988, and for decades it was the only place locally where people could hope to get facial ‘wonder’ treatments and laser hair removal.

Ipswich was one of the choices. I commuted to Ipswich from near Stansted for 17 years and finally decided enough was enough – I wanted to be close to my friends, work, and to live in this fabulous county. Plus, the schools here are excellent and, now 17 and 20, both my girls have benefitted hugely from this and got brilliant grades. My partner and I now live on the Shotley Peninsula. We absolutely love being surrounded by water on three sides and the incredible scenery.
