HOW TO SHOP FOR CARS LIKE A PRO... AND BAG YOURSELF A BARGAIN! 5 Top Tips from industry professional Jim Nash on how to find and buy your next car
3
We hear many people’s concerns about the stress and hassle of buying their next car – well we’re about to change all of that. Shopping for your next car should be a joy not a burden, follow these 5 tips from an industry professional and take the stress out of car shopping.
Transparency. Watch out for hidden charges or ‘admin fees’ when buying a car. Ask what admin fees or extra charges you have to pay on top of the advertised vehicle price, some places can add on a fee as high as £150! Make sure you know the true price of the car you’re looking at.
1
4
Think ‘Nearly-New’ not brand new. Everyone knows that the first owner of a brand new car suffers the worst depreciation, but you don’t have to! When you choose a nearly-new car you enjoy a car that’s just a few months old and save a small fortune compared to the price brand new. Search for garages in Norwich who specialise in nearlynew cars for the best bargains.
2
Look for a long-standing, independent garage. Companies with repeat customers must be doing something right! Unlike franchised main dealers, independent companies have to work harder for your business so you can expect a friendlier more personal shopping experience. You’ll find bags of advice and expert knowledge on hand in the best places. You may have more choice too, as many independent garages offer a variety of brands.
Stay protected with a warranty to avoid hassle later on. Many used car dealers advertise just three months warranty – by law you are entitled to a minimum of six months! Of course if you choose a nearly-new car you enjoy the remainder of the manufacturer’s warranty included in the price.
5
Choose a company regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). The FCA exists to protect consumers against unfair and pressurised selling practices. A car dealer that takes FCA regulation seriously should have your best interest at heart so you can browse and buy with confidence. Above all else shopping for your next car should be a pleasure – enjoy a smooth experience and find the best deal by following these pro tips. Happy shopping!

TONAL HUES Summer 2018 so far has bought us some well appreciated sun for longer than one week! Colour in fashion is one of my must haves, inspiring me to share the art of tonal hues. GET THE RIGHT TONE
Tonal dressing – by which we mean either wearing multiple shades of the same colour at once (think lemon, buttercup and saffron), or sporting the same hue top to toe... think white on white. Tonal dressing offers a colour matching hack. Does dove-grey look good with charcoal? Without a doubt. Does navy go with sky-blue? THREE TOP TIPS FOR CHIC TONAL DRESSING
Add a print Throwing a print into the mix really brings a tonal look to life. While wearing all one shade makes for a sleek ensemble, a jazzy pattern will not only add another dimension to your outfit, but will also grant it a more casual edge. Throw in Metallics Metallics also offer an effective way to break up a monochromatic outfit. Think grey and silver, camel and gold or brown and bronze, or a metallic bag will do the trick. Use neutrals to tone down combos What better way to fight autumnal blues than by wearing a bright colour head to toe? Use your trusty grey, navy and camel pieces to counterbalance bolder colours. 8 RETAIL CONSULTING 8 Retail Consulting, or otherwise known as 8RC, is a newly-launched retail consultancy based in Norfolk, which has been set up by former Norwich City Football Club employee Steve Balmer-Walters. Steve, who previously worked as Head of Retail at the football club, set up the consultancy after leaving the Canaries last year. 8RC aims to help retail businesses of any size focus on eight key areas which Steve believes, based on previous experience and outcomes, will help them drive sales and increase profit. These eight areas, or better known as #the8Ps include: ● Product ● Place ● Performance ● Presentation
● People ● Planning ● Promotions ● Profit
With a hands-on approach, 8RC can provide top retail and business consultancy at all levels, as well as help with marketing, photography and videography requirements. 8RC has recently employed three people, who all live in Norfolk. Steve said: “As a Norfolk business, I wanted to employ people within the county. IN STYLE AND IN THE PINK!
D
o you ever struggle to find clothes that suit you? Are you unsure of which colours you should wear, or what your style really is? For the mature woman over 40 these are common worries, and many find the high street doesn’t offer clothes that flatter or make them feel their best. If you are nodding your head right now, then you need to visit the Style Show, because it was created for women just like you! It’s a very different personal styling and shopping service that focuses on finding your unique style. Chrissi Rix, a fashion expert and guru with over 30 years in the fashion industry, runs the business alongside four experienced colleagues. “Style is very personal, and at the Style Show we believe clothes should make you look and feel fantastic, no matter what your age or body shape,” she says.
22
“Looking great is not exclusive to being ‘thin’. It’s about wearing the right colours, shapes and styles for you. “Many mature women want to look effortlessly chic, but they cannot find anything that flatters and enhances their natural shape. Our aim is to help them feel confident by finding their signature style for any occasion, whether it’s every day, a special event or business. “We have a boutique of fabulous clothes to choose from, with collections from London, Paris and Italy in a variety of styles, sizes and colours. So there is always something for everyone, and we are very affordable. We also hold regular fashion shows and demonstrations, which are hugely popular and great fun. “Later this year Style Show will be working closely with Gok Wan at his One Size Fits All fashion
brunch at the Mercure Hotel in Norwich on 28 October. “We will be showing on the catwalk, offering styling advice and generally joining in with Gok.” Chrissi and her team have recently relocated to larger premises, a gorgeous pink listed thatched cottage in Eaton. “We needed more space and this building is superb for us. And it looks so beautiful too – our perfect style!” Style Show also offers a range of great packages such as colour analysis, styling for business, luxury pampering, special occasion make-up, and private shopping and champagne parties – great for hen dos! IN THE FRAME Spectacle styling at Oculus
L
et’s admit it. We are all creatures of habit and although many of us might manage to embrace a bit of diversity in our wardrobes, when it comes to our eyewear, we can be incredibly tame. So what happens if we are put outside our comfort zone and let loose in a chic frame store? Our lovely Vanilla reader, Joy, went along to Oculus in Norwich to see if she would be willing to throw caution to the wind. JOY SAID:
“I had been wanting to upgrade my run-of-the-mill specs for a good while and have been increasingly inspired by the number of people I notice wearing

JEFF AT OCULUS SAID:
pulled some depressing grim and boring specs out! She’d always been told that because she had a small face that she had to have small frames. Turns out her face is a fairly average size and when we suggested trying on bigger frames, at first she was a bit reluctant as she was about going brighter. So we started gently and within ten minutes she was picking frames off the shelves that were really ‘out there’ and loving them! She couldn’t believe how great some of the bigger and bolder styles looked. Also she commented, as many do, that the quality frames feel so nice on your face and fit better. She also took onboard that you can have one style for smart casual, maybe one for evening wear and one for work, although they can be inter-changeable.” ■
“Joy was a lot of fun to work with and very typical. She walked in wearing trendy, fun clothes and

lovely unusual frames that really lift their whole look. So I decided to go for it and chose Oculus as they pride themselves on different, colourful frame designs. I was immediately put at ease by Jeff who was attentive, professional and really listened. With so many designs to choose from Jeff's experience and his eye for what might suit me was invaluable and I found just the right new specs for me and a whole new bolder look that has put a spring in my step. Big ones, small ones, fun ones, smart ones, blingy ones, quirky and classic. There’s so much eyewear to choose from if you move away from the ‘samey’ styles you normally see on the High Street. It’s an odd situation, I can’t believe anyone reading this article has just one pair of shoes, one coat, one bag, yet almost certainly they only have one pair of specs. So what’s going on here? You want them, we want to sell them. I think it’s two things: time and choice. The time one is interesting. If I’m in the market for a new suit, I want to try lots on, maybe think about it, make a short list and then try on again before purchasing. What I don’t want is a sales person jumping on me and expecting a sale then and

there. I’ve mystery shopped opticians and they can be pushy and reluctant to let you browse. Their pricing can be misleading – you get quoted a price and once you’ve agreed you get the upselling, my favourite being ‘you’ll be wanting thin lenses in that frame which is an extra £xx’. Really? It’s 2018, you've just picked a nice new frame, of course you want thin lenses and that should have been part of the original quote! Choice – I’ve touched on this in previous articles but is worth revisiting. You don’t need to walk into a hundred UK opticians to see what brands they carry, just look at their websites, where the vast majority take pride that they carry the same brands as everyone else... We love our range of frames and have a lot of fun with people coming in to try them on. We want you to enjoy it too! Looking forward to seeing you soon. Jeff@Oculus

“You should have control over who deals with your estate, who looks after your children and who benefits from any assets you own.”
The importance of making a Will before you travel MY QUESTION: My partner and I are going on holiday to Spain in August with our young son. We’re hiring a car and will be driving in the mountains. My friend has told me that we should make Wills before we go. My partner says there is no need as we don’t own our home and have very little in the way of savings. Is he right?
34
T
he short answer is no! Making a Will is important for many reasons, particularly when you have a partner or a young family. Even if you are single, if you have any assets in your name, making your Will is desirable. One of the most significant advantages of making a Will over not doing so is that you have a choice and control over who deals with your estate, who looks after
your children and who benefits from any assets you own. GUARDIANS
If you and your partner were both to die, have you considered who would look after your young son? Making a Will allows you to appoint guardians; people who would care for and live with any of your minor children. Choosing guardians allows you to decide which family or friends could Vanilla August/September 2018
REAL LIVES best meet your child’s needs, rather than a Court having to make this decision on behalf of your son. EXECUTORS AND TRUSTEES
Again, choice is the main issue. Executors are responsible for administering your estate, which involves following the instructions you give them in your Will. Your Executors may also need to take on the role of Trustee, if money is to be held in trust for minors until they are adults. It is important that you choose Executors and Trustees you can rely on and trust, as they will be the people who are fulfilling your wishes when you are not here. WHO BENEFITS?
If you die without having made a Will, the Intestacy Rules apply. These are strict legal rules which determine who can deal with your estate and who benefits. The fact that you may not have been close to that person when you were alive is not relevant. Your beneficiary could be a distant family member you have never met. Unmarried couples like you would not automatically inherit each other’s estate. To take control of who inherits, you need to make a Will. You can then make your own decision about who you would like to benefit, for example, your partner and your son.
thought about. Rarely do people actually have “nothing” to leave when they die. Do you or your partner have a workplace pension? Is it written in trust, or will it come into your estate? Do you have life insurance? Might you inherit from someone else in the future? By making a Will, you control who gets whatever you own when you die – whatever the

LEARNING SCHOOLS
WHICH IS THE RIGHT SCHOOL FOR MY CHILD?
O
NE OF THE BIGGEST decisions you make as a parent is deciding where to enrol your child to school. The limitless questions which arise through the process, knowing which one is best and which one worst, all combining factors to make it a stressful step for all involved. With the overall aim that your child is as happy as can be with the final outcome, the vitality of ensuring they are at the best place for them is key. So what is important when choosing a school? Endless questions can be posed at this stage, all with such a limited time frame to find the answers to. Most of us have been out of the schooling scene for some time, and a lot has changed. So take this chance to sit down with your partner and prioritise what you want for your child from the academic institution which
August/September 2018 Vanilla
you will choose. Are there any schools that family or friends have recommended? How are local schools performing on an academic level? Also think about how your child will be getting to and from school, distance plays a role in the decision process. Headmistress of Norwich High School for Girls, Kirsty von Malaisé says: “Whilst we have a long standing tradition of fostering academic success, we offer an education which is about more than exams. We aim to develop girls who are confident in their own voice. Our Inspiring Females programme, for example, welcomes bold, innovative and creative women into the school to connect with, inspire and empower our girls to succeed.” VISITS
Whether it be for enrolment in pre-school, junior, primary or
high school, school visits play a key role in the decision making process. These visits allow you to get a real feel for the environment and pose questions such as do you feel welcome, personally and culturally? Are the teachers keen and well informed? And whether or not there is a friendly, open, respectful communication between teachers and children. It is a crucial time to become informed on the facilities in place, as well as school activities available, allowing you to make a judgement on whether your child will be most happy in that environment and whether they will be able to flourish with the opportunities given. Stephen Crump of Hethersett Old Hall School points out, ‘Choosing a school is as much a matter of the heart as the head. If you can’t look back on a visit and feel a warm glow – possibly

wishing that you had had the chance to go to a school like that – keep on looking.’ Remember you can speak to your local authority, get access to local league tables to find out exactly which schools are performing best both academically and within other areas such as sport. THE SHORTLIST
Once you have visited the local schools and got a feel for what each one is like, it is then best to draw up a shortlist, abandoning those you did not warm to and beginning to look deeper into those you admired. At this stage, talking to other families whose children go there can be helpful, giving you first hand advice on the school from both a parent

and child perspective. As well as this, visiting further open days or information evenings can be vital in filling up the last few gaps in knowledge, enabling you to feel more confident and comfortable with where to enrol your child. In recent surveys carried out by Teaching Union it was found that more than half (54%) of parents look online for general information, 49% read the latest inspection report and 53% speak to parents of current pupils. All of this gathered information combines to leave you with a final, well rounded view of each potential school for your child. THE BOARDING OPTION
If you are considering boarding, ask current boarders what the food is like and find out what they
do at weekends, to find out what school life is like from a pupil themselves. Here in Norfolk we have an amazing state boarding school, Wymondham College. This is what the Head, Dan Browning, says about his school: “We are justifiably proud of our student’s academic success, which is an important aspect of our work. However, college life beyond the classroom is central to our belief in an holistic education. Our extensive ‘Wymondham Life’ programme offers a huge array of activities including charity events, sport, community work and our Combined Cadet Force. The dimension that a boarding school provides adds real value to our outstanding school. Our students are confident, articulate, well-rounded individuals who understand the importance of team work and resilience. We are proud of our high standards of pastoral care which were recognised by Ofsted in January 2017: “There is a culture of high expectation and high attainment. Many children and young people exceed their academic expectations because of the support that they receive.” Whilst our website gives a flavour of what makes Wymondham College such an amazing place to study, the best way to experience it is to come and see for yourself! ■ For more useful information on choosing a school visit www. gettherightschool.co.uk

The new Range Rover Evoque has been designed with women in mind, and is often a second family car. “Women are the primary drivers a lot of the time, towing the horse box, taking the kids to school and to sports events. It has a really muscular, sporty look, which carries around the body via the AMG side skirts, to the rear end apron where the two exhaust pipes are visible and linked via a chrome trim. With the AMG wheels making the car look like it’s hugging the ground, and the brake callipers displaying ‘Mercedes Benz’ through the wheels, the exterior design exudes confidence and purpose. Taking a first peek inside, you get the idea that the technology in this vehicle is going to be something else. One striking feature is the circular air vents, which look like jet turbines, these being part of the two-zone automatic climate control. BEATING STRESS WITH OSTEOPATHY Osteopath Joelle Fordham from Body Flow Osteopathy on a brand new new treatment – the Stress Buster!
illa Van PORT RE
L
IKE MANY PEOPLE I suffer from moderate stress, it’s part of modern life. I get the odd twinge of back pain as well, who doesn’t? But I don’t want to take pills and I’m not bad enough for full-on osteopathy. I just want to feel a bit better, and definitely more relaxed. Award-winning osteopath Joelle Fordham, who runs Body Flow on Riverside with her colleague Chloe Savage, has created Stress Buster to address the real need for a fusion treatment that can bring lasting relief from stress and moderate physical pain. I went to see Joelle to find out what Stress Buster could do for me. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but her warm welcome immediately put me at ease and she completely understood that some people can be nervous. The session began with a few essential questions to gauge my medical history, pain and stress levels, and she explained why she developed Stress Buster. “Stress can have a profoundly negative effect on both mental and physical health. Some find that GPs don’t have the time or the skill to help – other than to dish out yet more pills – so they
46
are left in a stressful limbo. “Stress Buster bridges the gap between traditional massage and osteopathy, so it's ideal for people who feel a bit tired, stiff and achy but who don't feel they're bad enough to have treatment.” I told Joelle about an ache in my left lower back that has been there for years, and tension in my shoulders. She focused her attention on these specific areas, starting with a massage machine on my back. This delivered an unusual but not unpleasant vibration sensation. “It’s more effective than my hands at stimulating blood flowing to muscles, and can concentrate on your troublesome areas.” She was right, my back
was tingling and warm and the tension in my shoulders was subsiding. Over on my back, Joelle took my body through some gentle stretches, paying special attention to my left side to help alleviate that. She also gave me some very useful exercises to do at home to relieve the tension in my shoulders, and advised me to invest in a foam roller. This is definitely the way forward for stressful society – no drugs, no bone cracking, and you can stay fully clothed – just a common sense approach that works with the mind and body. ■ REVIEW: LUCY OHSTEN For more info call 01603 327223 or visit BodyFlowOsteopathy.com

THE PILATES STUDIO
UCKED AWAY in Labour In Vain Yard, off Guildhall Hill, Norwich, you’ll find the The Pilates Studio. The central location is ideal for those that live and work in Norwich City Centre. Lauren and her team of teachers are highly trained and have many years of teaching experience between them. The studio equipment looks intriguing. The Reformer is the best known of the three main pieces, it’s like a single bed, moved with the aid of springs, but The Pilates Studio has the complete range of Cadillac and Wunda chair, plus lots of barrels and arcs to be able to offer the full repertoire. Joseph Pilates, German by birth, was interned on the Isle of Man during the First World War. As an early pioneer of physiotherapy he was asked to
48
work with wounded prisoners of war. With little equipment to help him he saw the potential of the old hospital beds to which many were confined. Using the bed springs, he invented the equipment to provide resistance and assistance in rehabilitation. Looking at the modern pieces, they are now beautifully engineered but you can see how they resemble those old beds. The precision and control the springs provide make it perfect for those who are recovering from illness or injury but can also be a real challenge if you have only used your own body weight and gravity for resistance. Combined with the bespoke attention of the small or individual classes, apparatus sessions are very effective. The studio really does offer something for everyone. From
injury rehabilitation, specific conditions, pre and post-natal women to elite athletes and office workers dealing with lower back pain. If you are looking to improve posture, strength and flexibility, you will find something in their timetable to suits your needs and schedule. Many classes are suitable for beginners and people who prefer to work at a gentle pace. Lauren says “Everyone can benefit from a good Pilates class, apparatus or mat. It can make profound and lasting changes to the way your body feels and moves, your physical awareness, and leaves you with a wonderful sense of wellbeing. It’s ideal for everyone, any age or fitness level.”. The Pilates Studio, 4 Labour In Vain Yard, Norwich NR2 1JD t: 07891987055 www.thepilatesstudionorwich.com

If you’d told Yvonne Gorrod 18 months ago that she'd own and run a gym business, she would not have believed you. Today, however, Yvonne is the General Manager and proud owner of Fitness Space Norwich. The stress of a long career in education had taken its toll on Yvonne’s physical and mental well-being, and over a long period she’d gained a significant amount of weight. Yvonne comments: “Looking back, I realise that for a long time all my focus and energy had been on a job, the demands of which were growing and increasingly outside of my control.” Deciding to tackle her health and her happiness, Yvonne embarked on a programme of exercise and weight-loss. In December 2016, after losing an incredible 11
stones in weight, Yvonne resigned as a teacher and put the wheels in motion to open her own gym. The unique nature of Fitness Space is clear as soon as you meet Yvonne and her team. Each member has a designated fitness coach, who meets up with the member monthly, for a one to one training session, monitors their progress with regular body composition analysis tracking and gives nutrition advice. Classes are also popular and free to members. It is a friendly, motivating space in which to train and meet likeminded people. Like to find out more about Yvonne or Fitness Space? BACK, NECK & SHOULDER MASSAGE by Orange Grove Massage Angel
nilla VaIE D& TR TESTED

ANT TO KILL STRESS STRESS, relax and take some ‘me’ time? Who doesn’t? A massage is a great way to chill out, and Orange Grove on Ber Street offers a wide range of treatments – whether you’re looking for luxurious relaxation, deep tissue or clinical massage to help with specific aches and pains. All Orange Grove’s Massage Angels are highly trained and some of the best in the area. I went along to their new massage space, at Float on Ber Street, to try a back, neck and shoulder massage. My personal Massage Angel for the session, Jess, explained that the new location is better for everyone because there are no stairs, which is great for their pregnant and elderly clients, and the synergy with Float adds more treatments for visitors. On a sizzling hot summer’s day,
50
the peace, cool and tranquility of the treatment room was bliss. Soft music, and calm. Jess was a friendly face in a manic world and she asked me if there were any areas I wanted her to focus on for stiffness, pain or flexibility. Stiff neck and shoulders are something I suffer from, and sore back occasionally as I have a sedentary job. Jess uses almond oil, which is unscented, and that was a relief in the hot weather, as strong scents may have been overpowering. She also asked me what level of pressure I wanted. Some people, like a very deep tissue massage, but it’s all very personal. I like to feel like I’ve had a massage, but without any discomfort, and Jess delivered this perfectly. The great thing about massage, as Jess explained, is that it can be very precisely tailored to each
client’s specific needs. “Our male clients often need massage to relieve a sports injury, or they spend a lot of time in the gym.” “We also offer massage for pregnancy, which can help to reduce cramping, the risk of varicose veins, high blood pressure and stretch marks, relief from sciatica and help with sleep. A massage is ideal for helping you to feel calm, soothed and reconnected during the intense days of pregnancy.” My own soothing massage was so good that I confess I dozed off, which I take as a good sign that I was totally relaxed! Jess left me very peaceful and rejuvenated, ready to tackle the busy hot world again. ■ Orange Orove Massage Angels, Float 66-70 Ber St, Norwich NR1 3EW. Introducing the region’s largest, most vibrant and interactive pregnancy, baby and child show... The Parent and Baby Show
L
AST YEAR Norfolk welcomed a brand new, exciting pregnancy, baby and child event. And boy has it grown quickly, and in so many different directions. Run by Alexandra Atkinson the ethos behind the show (and all the extra areas they cover – industry business events, a mini-magazine and The Norfolk Pregnancy, Baby and Child awards 2018) is to showcase, highlight and celebrate amazing businesses in the industry, as well as providing parents-to-be and parents around Norfolk (and the East), a fun and entertaining event which is perfect for everyone. With their next show on the horizon we asked Alex what we could find at the show and why it was different to others in the area. “The Parent and Baby Show is more than just a show… it’s
a funky indoor festival. We go all out and decorate the event with lots of quirky props and fun ideas – we have indoor tipis, old chesterfield seating zones (fab for watching little ones in the soft play area), a gorgeous vintage tearoom complete with bunting and hay bales – giving it that rustic and relaxed vibe. But furthermore, we have a huge programme of talks and workshops which can be found on our website (around 15 in all), features such as an in house photo studio, baby hand and footprint tile making, pregnancy zone for ladies looking to learn tips and tricks for birth, free massages, family portrait drawing, women’s health checks, Bollywood dancing, car seat advice and demos, face and bump painting, soft play and bouncy castles… and new for 2018 ‘Baby Boogie’ with DJ Sebina
where parents can rave with their little ones to 90s tunes! As you can see – it’s not just a shopping event like others (although we have some amazing businesses booked in to sell their incredible wares – from clothing to furniture and accessories). We put on a full day out, perfect for the whole family, with very few activities costing extra, meaning you have a few pounds spare for some cake! You can find all the details and pre-book your tickets on our website.” ■ Look out for their pregnancy, baby and child mini magazine around wellness centres, shops and pregnancy/baby/child classes in Norfolk. EXTERIOR LOOKFLOORING Want to bring the outside in with your flooring but not quite sure how to do it? A Moduleo floor or Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) could be the stylish yet practical flooring you have been looking for. LVT is a product made up of a top polyurethane layer fused with a bottom layer of PVC which is stable and flexible. It is very hardwearing and easy to maintain. Can LVT’s be installed over my existing flooring? In a nutshell, yes! Almost all floors can either be uplifted or smoothed over to receive a new luxury vinyl floor. This includes using a flexible smoothing compound over existing ceramic tiles, plywood over floorboards, or uplifting existing housing tiles and smoothing the top surface. HILIP and Claire’s other business, the indoor Hingham Antiques Fair, is equally booming. “We took it over 2 years ago when it was very run down, and we knew we could bring up again. We have now increased the stalls from 30 to 70, and visitor numbers from 180 to around 600 for each event on the last Sunday of every month. “It’s a broader offering than Cloverleaf, everything from antiques and collectables, to vintage and pre-loved items, clothing, handbags, jewellery, tools, art, and more. There is also a lovely cafe on site, and we often theme the fairs at Christmas, Easter and Mother’s Day, with free cakes and mince pies.” So what next for Philip and Claire? “Next January we are starting another fair, called the
Norfolk & Suffolk Antique Dealers Association Fair. It’s a bit of a mouthful, but we are also setting it up as an official trade body. It will be thoroughly vetted for quality and focus on high-end items. The fairs will be held at Barnham Broom Country Hotel 3 times a year.” Philip and his wife also support the Young Guns Movement, which helps to give a leg up to young people in the industry. “We have to encourage new blood to the wonderful world of antiques.”■ For anyone wishing to take a stand at either fair, call 01953 483691 or 07919 040909 or email: paccrosthwaite@btinternet.com cloverleafhomeinteriors.co.uk

HE fascinating world of antiques has always been a popular part of English culture because we love to celebrate our rich past – just look at the popularity of programmes like Antiques Roadshow, and Cash in the Attic! And it shows no sign of slowing down. Philip Crosthwaite and his wife Claire run two thriving businesses in Norfolk that are at the cutting edge of the antiques trade – Cloverleaf Home Interiors, and Hingham Antiques Fair – and they plan to launch a third early next year. “We started Cloverleaf ten years ago and it has been phenomenally successful,” says Philip. “We specialise in genuine, high quality antique furniture, focusing on the decorative, unusual and quirky – all one-offs. We have showrooms at our base in Caston, but viewing is by appointment only. Most of our business is done online, and we sell through eBay, sellingantiques.co.uk and Antiques Atlas.” “The quality of our furniture makes us popular with a wide range of clients, interior designers, hotels and country houses, film studios and national theatres. STYLE FILE BY HOLLY PAGANI INTERIOR DESIGNER AT SALT INTERIORS
Pattern in Fashion!
I
OFTEN SEE interiors fabrics which I think would look great as a dress or a shirt, much like Julie Andrews in the Sound of Music! Well now my wishes have come true… GP&J Baker, stalwarts of the interiors scene, have collaborated with H&M to create a fashion collection celebrating some of their most iconic patterns and prints. There are nine different fabrics in total which have been transformed into a collection of sophisticated dresses, blouses, trousers and t-shirts. Classics such as Oriental Bird, Blossom and Hydrangea Bird have been re-sized, re-coloured and printed onto fashion fabrics. These designs were originally drawn up in the early 1900’s and based upon Chinese hand painted wall coverings. Back then they were scaled down and softened to suit the Edwardian interior and now this has happened again for a newer younger audience. Patterns like Magnolia are still stunning, with bold colours that look fabulous in a simple setting. I find it very exciting that fashion and interiors can meld together so well and delighted that these heritage prints and patterns can stand the test of time so well. I also like the fact I can co-ordinate with my cushions!

THE 3 STEP PLAN
to a new garden
For over 30 years, Mike and his team at Perfect Plantings have been designing and creating gardens of every style and type – from traditional to contemporary. Creating a new garden is nowhere near as daunting as you would think and can add a lot of value to your home. Here’s Mike’s three step plan that, from start to finish, can take as little as 1-2 months:
Designs come to life
Soft and hard landscaping all taken care of
1
After initial discussions about your garden, Mike arranges a site visit and will survey the area taking measurements and photos, discussing the various styles available and suitability for your plot. All aspects of sun and shade are taken note of, enabling him to choose the correct plants for you.
2
Planting plans are prepared, in detailed colour, showing border layouts, individual plants and their spacings, along with selections of photos showing key plants to be used, a fully inclusive quotation for the preparation, supply of plants and the planting of the areas is supplied.
Garden spaces designed to fit your lifestyle
3
The Perfect Planting team source and supply all the plants and materials required for the job, carrying out the preparation work, including any soil improvement or clearance of old shrubs etc that is required. They then set about planting up your garden, irrigating thoroughly once complete. For more info, visit their website: www.perfectplantings.co.uk or call 07981 396334

HE SUN is out, the kids are off school, there’s probably a hose pipe ban on the way… it must be British summer time! And what more British way is there to spend a summer’s afternoon than with a spot of tea and cake. Whilst often afternoon tea is seen as an adult’s only, occasional guilty pleasure we think this is outdated. Why only three tiers of deliciousness,
76
why not offer luxurious extras? Why does it have to be a guilty pleasure, when it can be guilt free and still be delicious? And think of the children! Why can’t afternoon tea involve magical unicorns and fearsome pirates? At St Giles House Hotel we are modernising the way we serve our afternoon teas and have reflected this in our summer 2018 menus. With gluten free,
dairy free and vegan afternoon tea menus, we make sure everyone, including the young at heart, are catered for... perfect for whiling away a summer’s afternoon on our sunny terrace. n St Giles House Hotel, 41-45 St Giles Street, Norwich NR2 1JR t: 01603 275180 www.stgileshousehotel.co.uk

Vanilla Reader Review
I
was delighted to return to Stratton’s recently to try their new Summer menu in the a la carte restaurant. Spending time in this award-wining boutique hotel is always a pleasure, and the fascinating, quirky and interesting objets d’art make this a very special place. As always, the Stratton’s menu reflects the abundance of great local seasonal produce, and many of the ingredients are grown in the hotel gardens. My dining companion and I both started with something light, fresh and summery, but packed with flavour. For him, juniper and tarragon cured salmon, caper and shallot dressing, with buttermilk. I chose Stratton’s ricotta, heritage tomatoes, tomato relish, black garlic aioli and pickled shallots. These dishes were both beautifully presented – they were works of art in keeping with the surroundings – and the balance of flavours and textures was impeccable. In the heat of this glorious summer we tried all four of Stratton’s refreshing ‘mocktails’ during the evening; delicious, guilt free and they cooled us down nicely. On to mains and I chose a dish the owner had recommended – pan fried cod fillet, poached turnips, wilted turnip greens, charred endive, apple vinaigrette and baby radishes. This was a very special dish, perfect moist fish, and the accompaniment of earthy vegetables and sharp dressing was
78
a stroke of genius. Delicious! My fellow diner opted for the Norfolk lamb rump, lamb neck and caper croquette, sautéed spring vegetables, salted anchovies and chive oil. He told me the lamb was superbly tender, moist and full of flavour, and the anchovies delivered a lovely salty fishy hit. He also liked the crunch and flavour of the croquette, which added another dimension. We ordered a side dish of roast new potatoes and these were perfect.
D
esserts were equally impressive. For me a strawberry and vanilla crémeux roasted strawberries and basil, vanilla custard and pastry crisps. Very rich and utterly delicious, but the fruit running through it cut through the sweetness. For my companion the most
excellent cheese board he has ever eaten. Three local cheeses – soft, hard and blue – homemade biscuits and vegetable crisps, quince jelly, roasted nuts and grapes. Incredibly well put together and I didn’t let him eat it all! We were also lucky enough to try a selection of the chef’s homemade petit fours. Perfect little hits of heaven every one. A wonderful dinner, fine dining at its very best, with friendly relaxed service. REVIEW: LUCY OHSTEN

I was invited to my first seasonal BBQ this year, during the May Bank Holiday, and whilst the daytime temperature was good, by the time it came to eat it had cooled considerably and so our BBQ food was cooked inside and we ate inside. However I had decided to try one of my new wines – Selection Rouge from Le Grand Celier. Based in Argeliers, this is a co-operative of some 330 wine growers with an estimated 150,000 hectares of vine. When I tasted this wine last September in Argeliers I decided it was a perfect wine for us in Norfolk. Made from the Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah grapes, it has everything. Great spiced fruity aromas followed by a taste of mature cherries with red berry fruits to complement. A little spice is present but the wine is so soft it just glides down. Considering it had spent the previous week travelling it had benefited from its overnight rest in my warehouse. It is a snip at £12 from the warehouse and perfect for BBQs. If it is a lunchtime BBQ why not try a frivolous rosé called Gris de Gris made from the Grenache grape? Light and fresh deliciously gorgeous chilled down. At £10.75 a bottle, a good price to pay for fun!

NORWICH RESTAURANT WEEK
F
ORKS AT THE READY, the dates for Norfolk Restaurant Week, the largest dining event in the county, have been announced: 29th October – 9th November and this year our fine city is flying it’s culinary flag for the launch of Norwich Restaurant Week which takes place as part of the county wide event. If you have yet to become a Restaurant Week convert, the concept is simple: discerning diners get to choose from dozens of fixed-price special lunch or dinner menus in some of the county’s finest restaurants, pubs, cafés and hotels, such as Farmyard, The Tipsy Vegan, Bishop’s, The Georgian Townhouse and Frank’s Bar. Unsurprisingly, the event has

proved hugely popular with diners and restaurants alike and is now a firm fixture in Norfolk’s foodie calendar. With over 70 eateries stepping up to the tables this year you really are spoilt for choice. Greg Adjemian and Chef Patron Daniel Smith who own and run Warwick Street Social, a modern day pub set in the heart of Norwich’s Golden Triangle, said “We are firm believers in the power of good food and a thirst-quenching drink in a relaxed contemporary setting and we’re delighted to join Norwich Restaurant Week to help fly the flag for the wonderfully diverse restaurant scene in the city.” The organisers promise the event will be ‘bigger and better’ than ever and are working closely Just a few of the participating restaurants: (clockwise bottom right) North; Farmyard; Warwick Street Social
with the Norwich Business Investment District to attract even more eateries to participate in Norwich and the surrounding areas. It is a win-win for all involved; diners, many of them trying a restaurant for the first time, enjoy outstanding food at wallet-friendly prices whilst participating restaurants get to try out ambitious and interesting menus whilst reaching a wider audience. This year, restaurants will offer either 2 courses for £12 and 3 for £17 or 2 courses for £18 and 3 for £23, a slight increase on previous years due to rising food costs and the organisers (and participants) understandable unwillingness to compromise on quality as a result. As with previous years, organisers recommend that interested diners book ahead to avoid disappointment once menus are released in mid-September. A full list of participating restaurants can be found at www.norfolkrestaurantweek.co.uk with menus due for release in mid September.

WHAT INGREDIENTS DO YOU ALWAYS HAVE IN YOUR STORE CUPBOARD?
I only use fresh ingredients!! However, I like exotic spices from around the world – Middle Eastern spices are one of my favourites as they offer underrated flavours. WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO EAT AFTER A HARD DAY IN THE KITCHEN?
This is a difficult one, as after a hard day in the kitchen, eating is the last thing on my mind,
82
however I do enjoy a healthy plain omelette. WHAT STYLE OF COOKING DO YOU ENJOY COOKING THE MOST?
World cuisine. The range of foods and flavours available is endless. Working at the Last Pub Standing gives me the opportunity to experiment and enhance the menu. The menu principle here, is 'World street food served in a restaurant environment'. I am always looking at what’s out there in the world. I have found a love of Middle Eastern dishes which comes from the influences of Darren the owner. WHAT INGREDIENT DO YOU THINK WILL BE THE NEXT BIG THING?
Jackfruit is slowly taking off and becoming more popular. What really sets the jackfruit apart is what it can do to savoury dishes,
especially its ability to imitate pulled pork after several hours on the hob. So it's a “hot new vegan ingredient” and our new menus have been developed using this key ingredient. NORFOLK IS FULL OF GREAT FOOD AND DRINK PRODUCERS. ANY RECENT DISCOVERIES YOU CAN SHARE?
I am really blessed by working in Norfolk, the amount of good produce available to me is incredible. Its actually some of the best in the UK and we use a lot of local produce, especially the cheeses and meat. Sustainability and food miles are very important to me. Oh, and the local beers are great too!! n Last Pub Standing, 27-29 King St, Norwich NR1 1PD t: 01206 937013 www.lastpubstanding.co.uk Vanilla August/September 2018

the dieting world?
he traditional Ketogenic diet has long been a hot topic, perched on the tip of the dieting world’s tongue. Renowned for its ability to source calories from protein and fats as appose to carbohydrates and sugars in a bid to elevate weight loss and boost energy, the state of ‘ketosis’ has been credited for aiding a range of health problems. However, whilst the Ketogenic diet has proven its weight in gold for the mainstream dieters, it has seldom offered an equal reprise for the fastest growing food group in the world – vegans.
WHAT IS THE VEGANKETO DIET?
The traditional Ketogenic Diet is proven to break down stored fat and trip your metabolic switch to start using fat for energy. However it’s full of meat, cheese and eggs – none of which are particularly healthy. This led to Nosh Detox replacing all of the ‘unhealthy’ elements with vegan solutions to form a comprehensively worked out, macro balanced, effective VeganKeto product. The VeganKeto plan is the latest innovation from Nosh Detox, the UK’s door-to-door weight-loss service. The diet focuses on completely removing the carbohydrates that put you on a rollercoaster ride of insulin spikes, and once in your blood stream proceed to restrict your body’s ability to burn fat. All of the meals are pre-made and delivered directly to your doorstep. All you have to do is heat and eat. This diet doesn't come cheap at £444 for seven days but Nosh Detox say meals are made from the finest, freshest ingredients available and are packed full of flavour! Pam Davis Fashion Candy Style
My City Life
Your business, Fashion Candy Style, provides a wide range of services to individuals and organisations such as event management, fashion styling and freelance modelling. What does a typical day look like for you? There is no such thing as a typical day. My work changes daily and involves weekends and evenings! Meeting clients, retailers, models and extensive networking, also developing new ideas for the business. For “me time” I like to keep up to date with all that is happening in the fashion industry, and spend quality time with family and friends. How do you rate fashion shopping in Norwich? Norwich offers a great mix of
high street stores, fabulous independents and two great shopping arcades. As a personal stylist, my clients can enjoy a diverse range of fashion to suit everyone’s needs. Norwich also offers a great department store, so highly rated in my eyes! You have previously mentioned that your business can provide cost-effective solutions to cater to today’s economic climate, can you elaborate on this? Bespoke solutions are offered through Fashion Candy Style. My personal consultations and
shopping services enable clients to dress stylishly within a budget. The aim is to establish a core, versatile working wardrobe which ultimately save my clients time and money. We’ve seen you a lot on TV this year on ITV’s This Morning show. How did that happen? I was approached by ITV over a year ago, to appear as one of the models on the show. Since then I have appeared over 12 times, and was also selected to become one of the models for the TM Live lifestyle event in Birmingham. I have now become one of the regular models for the This Morning show. What would be your advice to any Vanilla readers that are thinking of working in the fashion industry? Think carefully about what kind of role you wish to pursue within the fashion industry, approach the relevant sectors and volunteer your time, enabling you to gain practical experience. Networking is key, the industry is fast moving and ever changing... use social media, magazines, fashion events to keep up! ■ www.fashioncandy.co.uk
