WELL DONE TO... THE FOX AT LYNG
Who have just been named Norfolk’s Best Pub at the EDP Food & Drink Awards 2016. Overjoyed owner, Vikki King (pictured above), said: “We were thrilled just to be a finalist after taking on The Fox just over 2 years ago and to win is a dream come true, Best Pub in Norfolk… Wow! What an accolade! Gavin and I work extremely hard to make our pubs great and feel friendly and welcoming to our customers (we also have the Lodge at North Tuddenham) but what is really important to us is they are fun places too. We want our staff to love coming to work and then it shows to the customer. We couldn’t have done this without them!”

Stylish classic jackets and warm chunky knits teamed with plaids and checks and faux fur. We have lots of accessories including leather bags, belts, gloves and vintage shoes to complement each outfit. For cooler evenings wear layers of gold silks teamed with vintage scarves, for a classic but casual look. Heavier fabric in satin works well for nights out with vintage 1950s dresses. FINDING MY INNER CHIC S LIFE-CHANGING experiences go, finding your own personal style… one that really works and makes you feel fantastic…well it has to be up there with the best! I was very excited when Vanilla asked me to do a Tried & Tested at Style Show, in Norwich, because I was intrigued to find out more about this unique and very different styling and shopping experience, started two years ago by style consultant Chrissi Rix. With more than 30 years in the fashion industry, Chrissi knows a thing or two about style. She runs the business with a team of four colleagues – all highly experienced stylists in their own right – and they offer something the women of Norfolk have been crying out for. “For the more mature woman of 40 upwards, finding their own personal style can sometimes be a struggle,” explains Chrissi. “They still want to look and feel sexy and chic, but without looking cheap. What we offer is a completely unique experience of fashion
28
shows, styling and retail shopping, all provided by a qualified team. We don’t just sell clothes, our aim is to find everyone’s unique style signature. It’s private, personal shopping with a difference, but also very relaxed and lots of fun.” She wasn’t wrong. When I met Chrissi at the studio, her warmth and empathy put me at ease immediately, and we chatted about my lifestyle, and the things I like and don’t like about my body. She quickly assessed my colours as cool soft Autumn, which means muted browns, pinks, greens and taupes suit me best. For my long lean shape, she said heavy thick clothing would swamp me, but tailored layering is perfect, as it flatters my naturally slender shape, tempered with fitted trousers and skirts.”
T
IME TO TRY on some clothes in the studio ‘shop’ upstairs. I was wearing skinny jeans, and she selected a lovely sage green layered top, and a very cute French tailored
jacket. An instant hit! I also tried on scarves from a lovely selection, and some chunky necklaces which really finished off the look. Next, Chrissi chose a bolder colour for me; coral…a floaty layered top, with a simple taupe poncho over the top. I have never owned a poncho, but it made me look effortlessly chic. I loved it! Other perfect outfits followed, one of my favourites was a gorgeous French boho floaty top with a clinched waist, teamed with tight black stretch pants. Chrissi’s eye is impeccable, and it was thrilling to see myself in clothes that I had never considered before, but that suited me perfectly. It was all so relaxed and we laughed a lot. I left feeling fantastic, pampered and full of confidence. This is the perfect way to shop if you want to find your ideal signature style, but you don’t have either the time or confidence to do it on your own. Give it a go, it’s dressing up for grown ups, what’s not to like? LUCY OHSTEN www.styleshow.co.uk

F YOU LOVE pearl jewellery, make sure you visit Simply Pearls. Their superb range of products suits every pocket, from a plain and simple string of pearls, to glamorous gold or diamonds for a wedding or special anniversary. Owner Julie Hutchinson, who opened the shop just a year ago, is very excited about the future. “We have some lovely new gold and pearl rings coming in soon,
Chantelle and Marcia from The Tannery
plus some gorgeous Tahitian pearl jewellery set in silver. “The old fashioned concept of twin set and pearls is a thing of the past. Our silver pearl jewellery is very popular with the younger market because it’s very affordable. Pearls appeal to all ages because they have a timeless, classic quality.”

RARE & LIMITED RUN WATCHES... CAVEAT EMPTOR by Giles Oakleigh at Oakleigh Luxury Watches
B
uying a luxury watch can often be a little nerve racking if only because of the increasing number of high quality ‘replicas’ out there. Fortunately, these are often relatively easy for the experienced eye to spot and so – touch wood – they don’t slip through the net to the customer. When the stakes are raised however, things become more tricky.. Over the years, various watchmakers have made short run and limited edition watches which are very similar to their more normal models apart from in one or two key areas. When these watches
become interesting to collectors and enthusiasts, their prices invariably rise relative to their standard production brothers and this leaves the market wide open for forgeries. The classic example of this is the Rolex ‘Paul Newman’ Daytona from the late 1960’s and early 1970’s and for our illustration, I’m going to borrow a photo from the esteemed journalists over at Hodinkee: So, below are two ostensibly similar black dialled Rolex 6239 Daytonas from around 1967 – the one on the left is worth around £35,000 and the one on the right is around £75,000. Why? Because the right hand

34
one has a ‘Paul Newman’ dial. Same case, same movement, same hands, same bracelet, different dial. So what you ask, is to stop an unscrupulous forger just repainting the dial of a standard 6239 to look like a Paul Newman and pocketing the extra £40,000? Exactly. And £40,000 will buy you a hell of a good re-dial. Virtually impossible to spot in fact. That’s why we unfortunately would never entertain buying, selling or sourcing a Paul Newman Daytona, because it’s such a minefield. We experienced something similar just this week with a highly desirable 1974 Rolex 1680 ‘Red’ Submariner. We were offered a Red Sub at a reasonable price and it was attractive because it came with boxes, accessories and the original papers – after a closer inspection it was clear that this watch was one of the first of the white writing 1680’s – the ‘Submariner’ writing had been overpainted in red to make it look like something it wasn’t… It’s a good job we were awake and on the ball because obviously, we walked away. We are here to catch these things before they get to you but if you’re looking for yourself, just be careful out there. Caveat emptor indeed...

SHINING THE SPOTLIGHT ON THE GEMSTONE MASTERS
F
amily jewellers Albrow & Sons, on All Saints Green in Norwich, is a familiar sight to anyone who knows the city. Run by brothers Richard and Harvey Albrow, the shop is an Aladdin’s Cave of antique jewellery and silver from every era, and no-one knows more about the quality and beauty of these glorious historical pieces. One of the most exciting aspects of Albrow’s work is their expert knowledge of gems. In their state-of-the-art workshop they create the most wonderful exclusive jewellery – rings, necklaces, brooches and more – using gems with superb colour and cut. Diamonds, rubies, emeralds and intriguing, very special stones. “Sapphires are very popular, in every colour, but recently we made a customer a platinum

and diamond Art Deco ring with a watermelon tourmaline,” says Richard. “As its name suggests, this fabulous stone has a pink flesh colour and this one measured over six carats. Watermelon tourmalines can also be green, yellow, orange and brown. “We are always busy buying antique jewellery from all over the country, as we find that more
and more of our customers are looking to purchase something unusual with history that you wouldn't find on the high street. This is what makes it so much more interesting, and gives it warmth. “Yellow and rose gold with coloured gemstones, as well as diamonds, are becoming more and more fashionable, and this trend lends itself to antique jewellery. There is a very alluring style and romance to the different periods, from Victorian and Edwardian to Art Nouveau and Art Deco. “I think it’s lovely that typically sentimental antique jewellery was very romantic indeed, featuring love birds, entwined hearts and cherubs. This is what makes it so special and highly sought after.” So what jewellery is fashionable now, and what are customers looking for? Richard says: “Lately it seems customers want to trade in a collection of smaller dress jewellery they have accumulated over the years and invest in one larger high-quality piece, such as a traditional diamond ring which can be worn, enjoyed and admired all of the time. “It’s almost impossible to predict what styles will be in demand in the years ahead, but it does seem that high-quality vintage pieces will always sell, which is why we are selling antique. It’s a proven market, built to last.” 10 All Saints Green, Norwich 01603 622569 albrowandsons@outlook.com www.albrowjewellers.com

“Very few people read the terms and conditions when purchasing goods because, let’s be honest, they’re longwinded and it can be time consuming”
What are my rights as a Consumer? In 2015 a new set of rules came into force regulating the rights and obligations of buyers and sellers within business to consumer contracts. These types of contracts can vary from the sale and purchase of a vehicle, to buying your weekly food shop from your local supermarket. If you were to ask a range of people walking down the street whether or not they are confidently aware of their statutory rights as consumers, some might say yes, whilst the majority would probably have no idea. Even those who answer with “yes” are probably only aware of the basics.
S
O, WHAT ARE YOUR Rights? Imagine you go out and buy the latest tablet. Very few people read the terms and conditions when purchasing goods because, let’s be honest, they’re long-winded and it can be time consuming. So we tick the box and sign the dotted line without giving it a second
44
thought. However, those terms and conditions carry within them your rights and obligations as the consumer to the contract. You get your tablet home, excitedly open the box and the screen has a large scratch down it. You’re obviously going to be pretty annoyed about it, but what can you do? Surely the staff in the
store will just think you’ve done it? Under the new legislation, goods are required to be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose and as described, including material characteristics. Your tablet is clearly not of satisfactory quality and you don’t expect to pay good money for something that turns out to be defective. In this situation you have a shortterm right to reject the goods. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, this right expires after 30 days (if you had purchased perishables this would be less). The 30 day period cannot be reduced; however it can be extended by agreement between the trader and consumer. In this case, the period would start as Vanilla October/November 2016
REAL LIVES soon as you hand the money to the cashier as, at this point, the goods transfer into your possession. However, this can vary from contract to contract. For example, if you purchased a Satellite TV package, this period would begin once the installation was complete. The right can be exercised prior to this though; you would not have to wait until your Satellite TV was installed, for example. Now you might not want to completely reject the product. It might be the case that you simply want to have it repaired or replaced, free of charge. As a consumer, you may well be entitled to the repair or replacement of non-conforming goods. Even if the repair or replacement of the goods would be disproportionate compared to reduction of price or termination of contract remedy, the trader cannot refuse to repair or replace the goods. Another option might be that you ask the trader for a price reduction. You could choose between keeping the goods and receiving what is known as a ‘partial refund’, and exercising the final right to reject the goods and receiving a refund. You can allow the trader one opportunity to either repair or replace the goods before exercising your right to a refund, whether it be partial or full. You can also opt for a form of refund if repair or replacement is not possible, for example if they ran out of stock to replace your tablet and it was beyond repair. When it comes to gaining a price reduction, if you decide to keep the defective goods, the trader will reduce the price “by an October/November 2016 Vanilla
appropriate amount”. You will then be entitled to receive a refund for anything you have paid already which exceeds the revised price. You probably are already aware that refunds must be made by the same means of payment and the trader is not allowed to charge you a fee for making it. You should receive your refund without undue delay and within a maximum of 14 days. “COOLING-OFF”
You may have bought a tablet online and while it was being dispatched you found you actually preferred a different brand of tablet. In this situation you have what is known as a “14 day cooling-off period”. This automatic right allows you a minimum of 14 days to change your mind on an item and inform the trader that you no longer want it. You
then have an additional 14 days in which to send it back to them. Some traders allow a longer “cooling-off” period in their terms and conditions of sale so it is worth giving them a read. Unfortunately this right does not apply where you bought an item in store. There is no automatic right to get your money back in this situation if you simply change your mind. However, it is again worth checking the store’s policy on returns because, although it is not a legal requirement for them to do so, some allow you to return products within a certain number of days as long as they are unused. Never just accept Terms and Conditions without considering them first and always be aware of your statutory rights should you experience problems with any goods. ■

WORK
T
HIS SUMMER we’ve had one of the most controversial current affair topics – clothes at work, or indeed school! In the news we’ve had the case of the receptionist who refused to wear high heels at work. She stated that she was sent home from work without pay on her first day as a receptionist because she refused to wear high heels, which had to be between 2-4 inches high in line with company policy. Following her dismissal, Thorpe has set up a petition seeking the law to be changed so that women cannot be forced to wear high heels at work – and over 100,000 people have signed up so far. Also in the news was the female employee who was provided with a uniform of a skirt (despite being the only female employee) and not offered the option of trousers – when going outside in the winter. So, what is the current law? Can you be sacked for a wardrobe glitch?
Employers are allowed to have dress rules for their employees and should be outlined in a staff handbook. It’s best practice for employers to specifically stipulate that a breach of the policy could result in disciplinary action and in certain cases dismissal might be appropriate. A dismissal would only be deemed fair if the employer carried out a fair process and
IN THE WORKPLACE
HEELS OR FLATS? SKIRTS OR TROUSERS? acted reasonably in dismissing the employee. Dismissal for a first time breach, for instance, would probably not be considered a reasonable response by an employer. Not that cases like this would ever reach Tribunal because an employee must have 2 years’ service to be able to bring a claim at an employment tribunal for unfair dismissal. It would be unlikely for a complaint of this nature to apply to an employee who had more than 2 years’ service because if the employer didn't like the way an employee dressed she would have been terminated long before she reached the 2 years’ service deadline. The biggest issues here are potential contraventions of the Equality Act. For claims relating to the Equality Act there are no
minimum length of service requirements, so somebody like Thorpe is able to bring a claim at Tribunal from day one. The fact that wearing high heels only applies to female employees raises issues of discrimination. Having a different dress code for men and women is not discriminatory in itself but the same standards and level of smartness ought to apply to both sexes.
B
UT THE BIGGEST argument has to be that women are being forced to wear high heels because it portrays them in a sexier way than wearing flat shoes, rather than the potentially superficial argument that it makes them look “smarter”. A grey area as you can imagine and the legal position is by no means clear. Enforcing such a policy could also be considered as harassment relating to sex, another offence under the Equality Act. All we do know is the serious detrimental health effects that women are suffering as a result of wearing high heels; humiliation and discomfort, back pain, arthritis, Achilles problems and bunions, to name just a few. The question really is: Does smartness or "sexiness" of female employees at work justify the substantial risks to their health and well-being? The question creates a very interesting debate and is as much a cultural issue as it is a legal one. ■

BEAUTY
YOUR BEAUTY QUESTIONS SOLVED ...by Sue Adams Vanilla beauty expert
I’M JUST BACK FROM HOLIDAY AND MY FACE HAS TANNED BUT IS VERY PATCHY? WHAT IS IT AND WHAT CAN I DO TO GET RID OF IT?
This sounds like pigmentation – it is a very common skin condition and can be caused from over exposure to the sun, pregnancy and hormones. It is important to wear at least a factor 30 on your face and when you are abroad I would up that to a factor 50 and wear a hat. There are products and treatments on the market that will help to reduce the appearance but unfortunately will not get rid of the pigmentation permanently. Laser facials work deeper into the epidermis than a hands-on facial so could be beneficial. DO I REALLY NEED TO WASH MY MAKE UP BRUSHES? IF SO HOW OFTEN AND WHAT WITH?
You should wash your make up brushes once a month, as this removes all the bacteria that builds up and also makes them easier to use as your make up will glide on more evenly. Gently dip the ends of your brushes in warm water and massage with either a make up brush cleanser or baby shampoo (this is gentle and won’t hurt the bristles or
54
your skin) then rinse again with warm water and leave them to dry on a towel. I HAVE NEVER BEEN INTO A BEAUTY SALON BEFORE I AM NERVOUS ABOUT GOING AS I DO NOT HAVE MUCH SELF CONFIDENCE?
I understand it can be quite daunting to go into a beauty salon for the first time, as you are not sure what to expect, how to act or how friendly the staff will be. It may be a good idea to ask family or friends if they are able to recommend a salon that they have used, as they will be able to let you know what to expect. Alternatively research the salon prior to your visit by looking at their website and testimonials – maybe call them to ask what the treatment involves so that you have an idea of what to expect before you arrive for your treatment? Once you’ve had your first treatment your fears will have faded and you’ll be able to look forward to your next appointment. I GET CONFUSED AND FRUSTRATED WITH SO MANY FACE CREAMS ON THE MARKET. HELP!
It can be daunting but the key to making this decision easy is to ensure that you know your skin type and skin condition. A skin specialist will be able to advise you and recommend a cream that will best suit you. Most specialists should be more than willing to provide you with samples to try before you buy, ensuring you are happy with the product before you invest. n Vanilla Vanilla October/November 2016

The ‘one hour face lift’
The latest facial rejuvenation procedure at Sean Holt Clinic explained
Before and after a Facial Thread Lift
The Sean Holt Clinic in Thorpe End pride themselves on making the most up to date treatments available to their Norwich clients. The newest, most-talked-about procedure is the thread face lift – a non-surgical procedure which aims to ‘lift and re-define the face and tighten skin tissue’. The PDO Thread Lift is a treatment which addresses two primary facial ageing concerns: sagging skin and lines and wrinkles. The procedure uses bio-absorbable threads placed under the skin to lift and restore facial contours. Additionally, the threads stimulate the skin’s own collagen production process, resulting in a firmer and smoother appearance in the area treated.
56
According to Dr Sean Holt, it is a safe and effective technique using polydioxanone thread, which has been used in the medical world for many years. The effects of a thread lift can last up to 3 years this is due to the increase of natural production of collagen and elastin. THE PROCEDURE
Dr Sean Holt begins with seeing a client for a consultation prior to commencing any treatment to discuss all options, take some clinical photographs for yours and their records and discuss what the client would like to achieve. He is then able to advise the best option to achieve these goals and formulate a
treatment plan. The thread lift takes approximately an hour. The skin is cleansed and guide markers are drawn on the clients face to mark the route of insertion and path of the thread. The patient is given a small local anaesthetic after which the doctor inserts the suture under the skin to a depth of around three to five millimetres. When in place, the threads are then pulled slightly so that they “grip” the skin ie the cogs are engaged. The ends of the threads are then cut to beneath the skin surface. Immediately after the threads are placed you can begin to see the effects. There is usually some degree of swelling or bruising, however this is expected to subside within a couple of days of the treatment. THE RESULTS
The results will be immediate and continue to improve over the first 6 months. The clinic recommend a follow-up review between 1-2 weeks of placement. The threads are slowly absorbed by the body in the next few months, which in fact helps to stimulate collagen production for a more prolonged smoothing and firming effect. For more information, including costs, or to book a no obligation consultaion, please Sean Holt Clinic on 01603 768261.

ETTING the best, most up-to-date dental treatment is something we all want for ourselves and our family. But finding the means to pay for it can be a worry! Ross Campbell, a dentist who runs a small private practice in Norwich, offers his patients the option of joining Denplan, a comprehensive dental payment plan which he believes is the ideal way for his patients to keep their teeth and gums in excellent health without worrying about

unexpected bills. “Many of the treatments we offer use the very latest in dental technology” explains Ross. “We are pioneering the use of non-invasive techniques such as lasers in place of drilling, and digital scanning rather than messy, uncomfortable impressions. This enables us to give our patients the very best dental care, and it is something we are extremely proud of. “But, of course, these treatments are not cheap, and paying for them can be a concern. This is why Denplan is such a good option for many of our patients, because it means they can have the very best dental care with affordable and predictable monthly payments. “We carry out an initial assessment of a patient’s oral health, and based on that, and their future dental needs, we set the monthly fee. This covers them for all their routine visits, preventative care and emergencies, plus the usual check-ups, x-rays, fillings and hygiene treatments, as well as worldwide emergency cover.” Ross Campbell is also Denplan Excel certified, which is an additional quality mark given to dentists who have met very stringent standards, and who are dedicated to continuous quality improvement. “We have chosen to have Denplan Excel accreditation because it demonstrates our commitment to maintaining the highest level of patient care and ensures that we are fully up to October/November 2016 Vanilla
date with all new legislation and best practice.” As part of this, Ross can offer his patients a sophisticated online tool to assess their oral health, called DEPPA. “This analyses every aspect of their lifestyle; from diet to fitness and, in a fraction of a second, provides a score that indicates their risk for certain dental problems such as gum disease and mouth cancer. UT how does Denplan work in practice, and do Ross’ patients really find it helps them budget for their detail treatment? Brian Brooker has been Ross’ patient for 35 years, and 30 years ago he decided that Denplan was the best way to budget for dental treatment for him and his family. “Ross explained that Denplan was very affordable and sensible, and after looking at it I
could see he was right – it was a great idea for us. My wife and I signed up immediately, and when our children grew up they went on it as well. “It covers us for regular check-ups every year, and teeth cleaning, plus we’ve had a few emergencies such as fillings, gingivitis and an abscess. So it’s paid for itself many times over. It’s a wonderful scheme, and I would recommend it to anyone who wants the highest level of care from superb dentists like Ross.”
J
ANE Valentine, who has been with Ross for 26 years, is delighted with Denplan, because it has enabled her to be more proactive with her own dental care. “I think Denplan has encouraged me and my family to go to the dentist more regularly. We never put it off because we know we are covered for the treatment. “Also, Ross identifies any potential problems when he assesses you, so it puts you in control and takes the fear out of going to the dentist. Ross and his team provide exceptional care and service, and they take care of everything, including providing Denplan. n

Amazing new conditioning treatment from L’Oréal Professionnel available at John Olivers salons in Norwich

A
s we start leaving the summer behind us, it is time to give your hair the perfect treat. The summer sun, swimming in a pool or the sea, not to mention the day to day styling of your hair, may have left it feeling dry and brittle.
To help get your hair looking glorious again the experts at L’Oréal Professionnel have introduced a new product called the Smartbond System.
Let’s talk about...
HAIR TRENDS
by Lucy Ferguson, Creative Stylist at John Olivers
French Polish for Brunettes
Smartbond helps restore hair’s vitality and shine and leaves colour more vibrant and long lasting by targeting the bonds which give hair its strength. This new treatment is available now at both John Olivers salons in Norwich. It is designed to be used during colouring and lightening treatments and stylists and their clients are already seeing brilliant results. Colour lasts longer as it reduces slow fading and as the hair is in better condition, it strengthens the hair bonds, moisturises and puts nourishment back into your hair. Some of the John Olivers’ stylists went to the L’Oréal Academy in Hammersmith for a specialist Smartbond training course and are finding that using the Smartbond System colour is more even and has more depth. They have also been seeing great conditioning results on clients’ hair when used as a stand-alone treatment as it doesn’t have to be used specifically when hair is being coloured. It works brilliantly as a strengthening and reconstructing treatment for hair. The Smartbond system has 3 steps. The first two are applied in salon (which adds around 10 minutes to your appointment time) and the third is a conditioner which is used at home on a weekly basis, used in the exactly the same way as a regular conditioning treatment. Smartbond is available for an introductory price of £7.50 (usually £15) for a limited period. Brunettes are set to have all the fun this autumn as L’Oréal Professionnel launches its French Girl Hair Brunette Bar. Inspired by the understated and chic French approach to beauty, a menu of brunette colouring techniques has been created which are available at John Olivers. Choose from the sophisticated French Polish contouring technique, Babylight Brunette microbalayage, Tricolore Chic or Brunette a Porter. Stripy Breton jumper optional! WHAT A SMOOTHIE Making waves in the hairdressing world, the GHD AIR HAIRDRYER (the stylists at John Olivers are big fans) is now available at Red Lion Street and Elm Hill. Ionic technology gives hair a smooth salon finish, and the powerful 2100w motor means that your blow dry takes half the time that it would with a regular hairdryer. HIS SEASON, there are some beautiful fabrics in store at Norwich Sunblinds. Favourite fabrics include canvas and linen textured finishes from the iLiv range, which make any room look warm and plush. The Clarke and Clarke Richmond range of embroidered materials also look absolutely stunning up at the window and are particularly good for living rooms and dining rooms. The Voyage range even includes threads in silvers, golds and beads. Neutral colours are also popular at the moment. These fabrics all make perfect curtains or roman blinds. Curtains are supplied with metal hooks and are weighted to ensure they hang superbly, and can have extra fullness of fabric for a luxurious look. Motorised options are also available. Norwich Sunblinds will visit you at home to take measurements, and a locally-based team of skilled home workers make the curtains to order. Made to measure blinds are manufactured in their Attleborough factory. Because they are an independent family business they can order from a wide range of fabric suppliers. “We base our business on personal service and high quality,” says Fiona Garwood, a director of Norwich Sunblinds, “The ethos of the business has always been to give a good service and we like to do that little bit extra for our customers to ensure they receive quality blinds and curtains from us with good service.” For cutting edge window design, ask about Vision Blinds, Hive fabrics for increased insulation, motorised blinds and Perfect Fit blinds.

ATTIK & SELLER
It’s Vintage... but not as we know it!
W
E ALL KNOW how costly it can be when it comes to furnishing your home. Although ready-made soft furnishings are quick and easy to purchase and put up, it seems there is a compromise to be had. The growing popularity of vintage and ‘pre-loved’ is gathering pace, and at Vanilla we can tell you about an exciting new venture taking this trend in a unique direction. Meet Kate Mamo, who has recently set up two companies in Dereham – Attik Property Services, an estate agent with a difference, and Attik & Seller, a shop offering an infusion of vintage and boho inspired clothing, shoes, homewares, furniture and antiques. Both companies, which she runs with fiancé Mike Lewis, work together to offer something that’s never been done before.
October/November 2016 Vanilla
“My background is estate agency, but I have always had a passion for vintage,” explains Kate. “It always used to make me sad that when someone passed away, or was taken into care, they left behind a host of possessions that the family had no idea what to do with, and these are often wonderful classic, vintage items. “At Attik Property Services we give new life to these possessions. We value everything, buy items the family doesn’t want, and anything suitable we can sell in our shop. The rest we take to charity shops. “We also help people selling houses to realise the full potential of their property – something I never had the time to do before. I have always been creative and I know that a property that looks stylish and chic will sell better than one that’s shabby and in poor condition.
“This is where Attik Property Services differs from other estate agents. We work with the seller to revamp the property inside and out, and our simple formula of ‘clear it, clean it, stage it, sell it’ really works. “We have only been trading for a few months, but already we have very happy customers whose houses we have sold that have been stuck on the market, and others where we have helped clear, stage and sell a loved one’s property.” The Attik & Seller shop, situated in a gorgeous converted barn, is packed with intriguing items – and the quality is superb. “We don’t sell any rubbish, it’s all in pristine condition. These are classic items that were once treasured, and we want other people to love them as well, for many years to come. We also sell at reasonable prices, classic and chic should be affordable.” Attik & Seller is open every Wednesday and by appointment at other times. Kate also offers bespoke hen nights for those who want a vintage look, and photoshoot styling. Plus, she will be holding a vintage market every month at the Mash Tun pub, in Norwich. Check out their Facebook page for dates. ■ attikandseller.co.uk 01362 694800

9. Exotic The Autumn/Winter fabric collections are upon us and the distinct theme coming through is “exotic”. A myriad of rich, strong jewel colours with oriental patterns, sumptuous damask, soft velvets and linens.
● The Matthew Williamson Collection for Osborne & Little is not for the faint-hearted.
Strong, inky blues and teals with butterflies and monkeys woven or appliquéd onto linens and velvets. All gorgeous but perhaps better used sparingly – a statement chair or wall is ideal.
Chair in Menagerie from Osborne & Little
● Narissa is a great statement paper showing
a collection of framed butterflies and Indian artefacts named after a breed of Indian butterfly. Menagerie is another lovely paper and fabric with an ornate, fantastical pattern featuring hearts and colourful trailing blooms. You could be brave and use both in the same room!
Inset: The Matthew Williamson Collection
● The new Linwood collection – Aesop’s Fables – is again an exotic affair, drawing on storytelling in the Orient as its theme. Vignettes of tigers and forests are in such pretty colour palettes they could be used in a nursery or master bedroom. ● I love all the strong colours of this new season,
either used sparingly or in abundance. With the patterns, sometimes a little goes a long way, but plain fabrics can be piled together to make a jewellery box of colour on a sofa or bed. Throw in some plants and mirrors and you might feel like you’ve travelled the world! ● For ideas on how you can accessorise a room or for any interior design queries contact Holly at Salt Interiors: info@saltinteriors.co.uk

GETTING YOUR GARDEN GROWING Mike Read runs Loxley Hall Ltd a local garden design and construction company with over 20 years experience. His team has built countless gardens locally and offers advice for the coming Autumn season.
“One of the things we are often asked is do we design planting layouts? Often the eye is drawn to the newly constructed hard elements of the gardens we have built, however we also specialise in the designing, supplying and planting of gardens and have won several gold medals over the years for innovative displays at the Royal Norfolk Show, Sandringham Flower Show and even Gardener’s World Live.” “Autumn is one of the best seasons for planting work and Loxley Hall can design you a beautiful, harmonious layout of trees, shrubs, perennials and

grasses that will enhance your garden and make it a pleasure to relax in throughout the year. “Planting design is highly subjective and personal – planting is dynamic, developing from season to season, and year on year. It’s also affected by soil and site conditions – ‘right plant for the right place’ is our mantra.” Mike and his team can install many types of garden – contemporary gardens, jungle effect urban gardens, traditional cottage borders, tree and hedge
plantings, orchards, ‘shelter belt’ plantings and bog gardens. They have also installed many coastal gardens around the Norfolk and Suffolk coasts, and have their own small nursery where they grow the best varieties they know to be suitable for the exposed conditions. Loxley Hall also carry out the pruning and regular maintenance required to keep your borders looking at their best, and will even install timer driven irrigation systems to save your precious new plants drying out even when you are away on holiday! Wood is one of the most widely used materials in the home. No matter what the style of your interiors – staunchly traditional or ultra contemporary – chances are a good proportion of your furniture is wood, be it solid, veneered or painted. Regardless of style, wooden furniture is durable and if well cared for, it can last a lifetime so makes a long lasting and smart investment.

OAK AND TEAK
Oak is durable, has an attractive grain and is less susceptible to damage from sunlight than other woods, making it a great choice. Teak is an oily wood, and naturally water resistant, so it works well in wet areas. Its uniform colour gives consistent results, but don't forget to regularly oil your teak furniture – it's easy to apply and will nourish the wood.

F YOU’RE GOING to open a brewery directly opposite the venue for one of the most popular beer festivals in the region, you need to be confident about the quality of your beers. Even more so when it’s based in a Grade II listed building that’s been part of city centre nightlife for well over a century. But that’s exactly what St. Andrews Brew House aims to deliver with its promise of great
beer, great food and great service. Directly opposite St Andrews Hall, the interior of this modern bar and restaurant is best described as industrial chic – with stripped-back walls, exposed pipework and original tin advertising signs. It’s a lovely relaxed atmosphere, and a friendly one too, as the staff lost no time in offering small tasters of the various home-produced beers on offer.
“If it’s brewed with passion, it’s a good beer” There was the beautifully flavoured Cork Cutter, the refreshing Brew House Wheat Beer, the rich Black IPA (at a formidable 8.1%) and the Tombland Porter, which had such a beautiful malt flavour and coffee taste that it warranted its own pint. To accompany it, I decided to order the Brew House ale braised beef pie, with vegetables and chips. The menu features a fabulous range of British Tapas, sharing
82
boards and a superb choice of dishes from the traditional Beef Faggots to the inventive Posh Lamb Shoulder Kebab. On arrival, the food looked fantastic (I was pleasantly surprised to be served a whole individual pie rather than a slice) and it didn’t disappoint. The beef was beautiful, the vegetables were crisp, and the rich gravy was sublime. As for the beer, full marks to Steve Chroscicki, who’s been brewing for over 20 years – and his brewery tours are as entertaining as they are informative. While some of the science went over my head, his stories from the history of brewing were fascinating. And for those keen to get closer to the art, Steve offers whole day brewing experiences – where you can mash the grain and pitch the yeast, and return two weeks later to collect two litres of the beer you helped brew. Of course, the big question is what makes a good beer. “Passion,” says Steve. “If it’s brewed with passion, it’s a good beer.” There’s a lot of passion here. A brilliant setting, fantastic food, wonderful service and a delicious range of beers that couldn’t be more local. We can all say cheers to that. REVIEW: MARTIN ROBERTS

Jaime met his future wife, Stephanie in Norwich in 2007 when she was studying at UEA. They have returned to Norwich in 2016 to raise their two children and open up Figbar.
Bar’s cod goujon are my current go-to’s! I also love my wife’s shrimp ‘n’ grits: she’s from the Southern USA and knows how to get that dish just right.
What ingredients do you always have in your store cupboard?
What type of cooking (or dish) do you enjoy cooking the most?
I always have yuzu juice, Maldon sea salt, and the ingredients for chocolate chip cookies. You'd be surprised how many treats you can make with those!
Obviously, I love desserts and sweet things! I also love making bread, particularly sour-based. The bread starter I have at home is getting pretty old now and makes a beautiful bake for us each week. I’ve started teaching our daughter Ella how to knead the dough. She’s almost two now, and absolutely loving getting her hands dirty with me in the kitchen!
What do you like to eat after a hard day in the kitchen?
My sweet tooth craves salt by the end of a long day tasting sugary foods. We are lucky to be on St John Maddermarket and part of the Norwich Lanes as we have many neighbours with delicious foods! The MadderKitchen’s dish ‘The Raj’ and the Grosvenor Fish

What ingredient do you think will be the next big thing?
I used a lot of Korean ingredients
“Norfolk definitely has a plethora of food and drink producers I love” in my last position (Head Chef/Executive Pastry Chef at Jinjuu in London and Hong Kong), and I'd definitely say those ingredients are coming into the limelight. Specifically, yuzu (one of my favourite citrus flavours to use) and gochujang (a Korean chili paste). Make a glaze from gochujang, mirin, soy sauce, sugar, and fresh ginger and marinate some salmon. Easy and delicious. Norfolk is full of great food and drink producers. Any recent discoveries you can share?
Norfolk definitely has a plethora of food and drink producers I love. I keep Bullards Gin at home which is distilled at The Ten Bells pub just down the street from us at Figbar. We are hoping to pair a dessert with a Bullards ginbased cocktail sometime soon as I use Tonka beans in a few of our desserts and cakes just as they do in their gin! Chile produces remarkably good wines at amazingly good prices from its privileged position between the Andes and the Pacific, where winemakers are blessed with some of the most desirable conditions on earth and use very little or no pesticides. Viña Edmara wineries are in two main areas – the rich Central Valley and cooler coastal region. Grapes are handpicked at low temperatures of 14°C. This lively young wine has a vibrant flavour with luscious tropical notes and delicate undertones of wood giving complexity. A second of note on our wine list is Quasar Rioja Crianza, Spain, red. E MIGHT not be living directly under the fiery hot Spanish sun but a balmy Norwich night was close enough for tapas and cocktails at Forty Two King Street. Visiting is like stepping off the street and straight into Mama’s rustic kitchen. With the smell of beautiful cooking and the promise of a feast, one is not to be rushed when sitting down to eat at this table! Our friendly and knowledgeable hosts quickly served iced water while we took time to look at the menu. As a repeat visitor here, I know that you will never be bored. Seasonal dishes and new local produce mean that the menu changes often. Tapas is famous worldwide as the food for sharing and that philosophy is embraced at Forty Two. Our host recommended plates that we could both enjoy as a vegetarian and non, as well as

some starters while our food was being prepared. They say that you should be able to go to any good cocktail place and order a perfect Negroni or Old Fashioned – even if it isn’t on the menu. These standard cocktails are the litmus test! Forty Two King Street does have both to order as well as craft cocktails to make your mouth water – just two or three alcoholic spirits in each and freshly squeezed juices. The high quality ingredients look good and taste great. I doubt you would
Chick Pea Chips with Aioli – melt in the mouth. Mediterranean Veg & Halloumi – beautiful salty cheese and chargrilled veggies in their own rich juice, mopped up with the remaining bread from our olive board. Tomato and Goats Cheese Panzanella – a summer salad and a true taste of the Med. And finally, some Curry Beer Battered Cod with Aloo Matar as a little diversion from our Spanish/Greek/Italian flavours. Because we were sharing, it was agreed that we’d love to go halves on the Poached Peach and Strawberry Mess dessert. My word! It is a stunner of an afters. Plump, juicy peach, poached in sweet dessert wine, steeped with a vanilla pod and lifted by some aromatic baby basil. It really was too, too good. A bunch of us plan to visit again soon. With unpretentious but exciting food, quality cocktails and an unhurried, friendly ambiance, Forty Two King Street is undeniably how tapas is meant to be enjoyed. REVIEW: HEIDI SECKER

What we choose to eat today affects how we all live tomorrow
Baking with Gluten Free Flour BY LOUISA KIDDELL The Norfolk Gluten Free Co. Ltd.
When you embark on your gluten free journey, one of the first things that springs to mind is how on earth am I going to bake now? Most gluten free replacement flour is made with a combination of potato, maize, buckwheat, rice, tapioca, xanthan gum (it acts a bit like gluten) and a raising agent if it’s a self-raising one - and for the most part it works just as well as a like-for-like replacement in cakes, to thicken sauces, and even Yorkshire puddings. There is no need to go to lots of expense as most shops stock GF flour like this; it can be a little bit dryer than wheat based flour though, so make sure that you use large eggs instead of medium ones, or a handful of almond flour can help cakes retain their moisture after baking. My favourite blends are those by Glebe Farm and the Wheat Free Bakery. Bread can be a little bit trickier, and my number one tip is to use fresh yeast, which costs just a few pence from a reputable baker such as Dozens in Norwich. You can make your own blends of flour, and many cookery books ask you for a few grams of this, and a few grams of that – that's why in our shop we sell individual flours by weight. If you do this you will need to add guar or xanthan gum and GF baking powder too of course, but once you’ve got your confidence you can even play around with more exotic nutritious flours, such as coconut and hemp and make some fabulous new creations!

Amanda Baldwin Director at HR Answers
My City Life
What do you love about Norwich? There is everything here. A great range of shops for the committed shopaholic, Cinema City and the Theatre Royal and several fabulous eateries and bars. I’d better not forget about the people – it’s so friendly and I’m lucky to have a wide circle of friends.
Is business booming in Norwich?
How did you get into HR? I was working in London in corporate finance for a merchant bank. We worked mainly on mergers and acquisition and this sparked an interest and involvement. When I moved to Norwich in 1995 I was initially a PA, but then my role changed to Personnel Manager, covering several offices across England. I then moved on to be HR Director – all in different areas of business so my experience is very wide and varied and I have some very
funny stories for when I write my book when I retire!
Hailing from Lincoln, what brought you to Norwich? I moved here in 1995 as my then partner began to work locally and I commuted to London from Diss every day joining the happy commuting band! Initially, I lived in Beccles, then moved to Wymondham and settled ten years ago in Long Stratton. Norwich, is very like Lincoln with its cathedrals and heritage and it very quickly felt like home.
Tell us about your favourite city haunts… There’s so many to choose from. On Saturdays, during the football season, it has to be the Jarrolds stand. Or for food, The Assembly House or Shiki. Drinks wise, anywhere that serves a decent Sauvignon or a Hendricks and has a taxi rank nearby! I can’t wait for the Roof Top Garden to open at the Union Building. The views are amazing over the City and we’ve been involved in the recruitment for it so have had a sneak preview of the food and wine. In fact, I’m seriously thinking of relocating the office to the top floor! n

Absolutely. We’ve always been busy from when I started HR Answers in 2006, but since moving into The Union Building on Rose Lane in March (strangely enough on the same floor I started work on in 1995) we have been absolutely nonstop. I now have three consultants and an in-house lawyer and will be looking to recruit again soon. Many of our clients are expanding too so we are really kept busy.
