WELL DONE TO... TREE TIME! Choosing

THE ART OF GIVING

This year Coes have launched a unique range of charity Christmas cards available to purchase in store and online. The Christmas cards feature artwork generously donated from ten new and established Suffolk artists. There is also a chance to own the original piece by the artist at an online auction which opens at 9am on 22nd November. All the artwork will be on display in the shop throughout November before bidding closes at 6pm on 17th December. ●The cards will be available in store and online from 8th November, and 100% of the proceeds will be donated to Cancer Research UK.

the right Christmas tree is a fun event and all part of the big Christmas build-up. Buying a locally grown tree is not only good for the local economy but also will be fresher than an imported tree, one that will hold its needles until the new year. Top tip: Do not stand your tree in front of a radiator!

● Suffolk-grown Christmas trees are arriving at Bourne Garden Centre on the 29th November. Pre-ordering and local deliveries are available.

Stylistically Speaking... BY FASHION-LOVER K AREN WOLFF E VANS

Have you got Christmas wrapped up?

W

ITH THE BIG event fast approaching, like me you’re probably writing or checking one of a few important lists – food, gifts, who to invite, who will just turn up anyway! It’s tempting to just copy and paste last year’s list but that would be un-festive, and we do all wish for a lovely gift (and world peace) don’t we? We have a few store rules at Fanny & Frank. No decorations and festive music before 1st December (3 weeks of jingle bells is quite enough thank you) and have the coffee on for panicking men. What I do love about Christmas though is the effort our male customers (try) to make to give the perfect gifts to their

36

other halves, and how often this can go so wrong. One chap bought his wife a new toilet seat and loo roll holder for Christmas (when we had an interiors gift department). We suggested he wrapped a piece of jewellery around the seat, but he was having none of it. I’ve often wondered about their Christmas morning. Another husband (mine), lovingly gift wrapped (the Christmas after my first child was born) a pair of hotpants and some frilly underwear (zero support, two sizes too small). What do you say? We have a string of husbands coming in from the start of November (they are calm at this point) right up until 5.30

on Christmas Eve just as we’re locking up (now looking like rabbits caught in headlights) and what they don’t realise is, just how helpful a local independent retailer can be (and you don’t get this shopping on the internet). ● Firstly, we probably know the wife well, her size, her shape and what she likes. ● Secondly, if she’s smart, we may have her Christmas wish list of suggestions that her man can refer to. ● Thirdly, we do something called a ‘Gift Voucher’ so no decision required on the part of the male. ● Fourthly, there will be late night shopping evenings so you can shop together. ● Fifth, we have a sofa, a magazine and a coffee for him, while we pamper her. Finally, leave this copy of Vanilla open at this page for him. Which is more important, giving or receiving? Well both are nice but can be fraught with angst and indecision, so don’t forget that Santa does indeed have lots of little helpers, they’re called shop assistants. Happy shopping and Merry Christmas! ■ Karen from Fanny and Frank, Woodbridge, Saffron Walden and Colchester.

“To enable Mark and me to move forward amicably, keeping an open communication channel was essential”

Agreeing on Christmas holidays abroad with children, post-divorce OUR PROBLEM: It was a big surprise to me when Mark told me he wanted to end our marriage last year. With two children and what I thought were some very strong foundations, it took a couple of months and some painful counselling sessions for me to realise that divorce was, indeed, the only option, especially as Mark had met someone new. To make up to the children for a fairly tumultuous time, I was very keen to create a truly unforgettable Christmas this year. I decided it would be nice to take them skiing – something we’d always enjoyed over the festive period in the past – and my new partner said he’d like to join us. My ex-husband, Mark, and I had been reasonably amicable in our childcare agreements. We successfully agreed plans through mediation, rather than the court, so I was surprised when he told me he was unhappy about my Christmas holiday plans and that he would be talking to his solicitor about his rights. JULIE, FELIXSTOWE

44

HOW IT WAS SOLVED:

Having seen friends go through messy divorces, Mark and I had agreed not to let our own separation get nasty, particularly with regard to how we would look after the children – seven year old Sophie and Charlie, who’s ten – in the future. Our divorce was, therefore, relatively quick and putting our parenting plan in place was fairly straightforward. We both have parental responsibility, with the children living with me, while staying with Mark every Vanilla December 2016/January 2017

other weekend and one night every week.

W

E HAD ALREADY discussed the forthcoming winter school holidays and had agreed that the children would spend the week before Christmas and Christmas day with Mark, and would come home to me on Christmas night for the rest of their time off. That left around 10 days for us to fit in our skiing trip. I thought it best to mention it to Mark sooner rather than later, so I sent him an email letting him know of my plans. He replied almost immediately to say he would not agree to the holiday and that he would be taking legal advice. Not being sure of my own rights in the situation, I decided to get in touch with my solicitor too.

did, especially as my plans included my new partner. Josie suggested that we try to avoid court proceedings and seek to reach an agreement amongst ourselves. Keeping an open communication channel was essential to enable Mark and me to move forward amicably. We decided that another mediation session may be a good idea and Josie set the wheels in motion for me. Mark and I met with the mediator to discuss holidays abroad and how these would work for all of us. Having checked my rights with Josie, I was able to discuss my plans

J

OSIE AT BARKER GOTELEE had supported me through the divorce, so I called her the next day to make an appointment and went to see her at the Barker Gotelee offices in Martlesham during the same week. I explained the situation to Josie and she immediately put my mind at ease. She said that, as both Mark and myself had parental responsibility and there was no court order in force, I would need Mark’s permission or we’d need to go to court for a Specific Issues Order. Discussing it with Josie, I realised that, had the shoe been on the other foot, I’d have felt much the same as Mark

confidently, reassuring Mark that we would be in regular contact throughout the time we were away.

T

HANKS TO JOSIE’S sound advice and her understanding of our circumstances, Mark and I are back on amicable terms and the children and I have kept him informed of our plans as we make them. Now we’re looking forward to our holiday. Sophie and Charlie are incredibly excited to be heading to the slopes for the New Year and I feel positive that I’m doing the right thing. ■

STYLE

MAKEOVER HEAVEN!

S

USIE was given her Makeover Day as a gift from a friend, she knew Susie would love the day – time to be pampered, relax and recharge her batteries. Susie loved clothes so this seemed like the perfect gift. However, the day included so much more than just clothes styling... She spent time with a makeup artist looking at cosmetics that worked for her colourings, her lifestyle and also her budget. The hairdresser talked to Susie to understand what look she wanted to create and whether she wanted to update her current style, and the Dream On stylists encouraged her to try different looks. “We can all be guilty of staying in our comfort zone, so advice on a new style can feel very uplifting” said Amanda, the dream on stylist. To complete the look, Susie was able to choose one of the many colours available for gel varnish nails. She looked fabulous! Susie said “I found the location very relaxing and the small group made it easy to connect with people. The team were so professional. Dionne’s make-up tips were superb and I was able to take away techniques which I have used at home. Lauryn styled my hair in a way I have never really tried before but I certainly have since. I was shown clothing that suited my traditional style and others that brought out a different side to me. I would definitely book another Makeover Day when the new seasons collections come in.”

WORK

T

HIS SUMMER we’ve had one of the most controversial current affair topics – clothes at work, or indeed school! In the news we’ve had the case of the receptionist who refused to wear high heels at work. Nicola Thorp stated that she was sent home from work without pay on her first day as a receptionist because she refused to wear high heels, which had to be between 2-4 inches high in line with company policy. Following her dismissal, Thorp has set up a petition seeking the law to be changed so that women cannot be forced to wear high heels at work – and over 100,000 people have signed up so far. Also in the news was the female employee who was provided with a uniform of a skirt (despite being the only female employee) and not offered the option of trousers – when going outside in the winter. So, what is the current law? Can you be sacked for a wardrobe glitch?

Employers are allowed to have dress rules for their employees and should be outlined in a staff handbook. It’s best practice for employers to specifically stipulate that a breach of the policy could result in disciplinary action and in certain cases dismissal might be appropriate. A dismissal would only be deemed fair if the employer carried out a fair process and

IN THE WORKPLACE

HEELS OR FLATS? SKIRTS OR TROUSERS? acted reasonably in dismissing the employee. Dismissal for a first time breach, for instance, would probably not be considered a reasonable response by an employer. Not that cases like this would ever reach Tribunal because an employee must have 2 years’ service to be able to bring a claim at an employment tribunal for unfair dismissal. It would be unlikely for a complaint of this nature to apply to an employee who had more than 2 years’ service because if the employer didn't like the way an employee dressed she would have been terminated long before she reached the 2 years’ service deadline. The biggest issues here are potential contraventions of the Equality Act. For claims relating to the Equality Act there are no

minimum length of service requirements, so somebody like Nicola Thorp is able to bring a claim at Tribunal from day one. The fact that wearing high heels only applies to female employees raises issues of discrimination. Having a different dress code for men and women is not discriminatory in itself but the same standards and level of smartness ought to apply to both sexes.

B

UT THE BIGGEST argument has to be that women are being forced to wear high heels because it portrays them in a sexier way than wearing flat shoes, rather than the potentially superficial argument that it makes them look “smarter”. A grey area as you can imagine and the legal position is by no means clear. Enforcing such a policy could also be considered as harassment relating to sex, another offence under the Equality Act. All we do know is the serious detrimental health effects that women are suffering as a result of wearing high heels; humiliation and discomfort, back pain, arthritis, Achilles problems and bunions, to name just a few. The question really is: Does smartness or "sexiness" of female employees at work justify the substantial risks to their health and well-being? The question creates a very interesting debate and is as much a cultural issue as it is a legal one. ■

YOUNG MUSICIAN

OFCOMPETITION THE YEAR 2017

W

OODBRIDGE SCHOOL is delighted to be hosting its hugely successful Young Musician of the Year Competition for a third year this coming spring. The competition was established in 2015 to give a performing opportunity to young musicians in the area, and to recognise and promote local talent. The 2017 competition, which is open to all talented young musicians across Suffolk aged 18 years and under, will be hosted by Edmond Fivet, who has been a major force in British music education, having been Director of the Royal College of Music Junior Department and having served for eighteen years as Principal of the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. Since moving to Suffolk, Edmond Fivet has become increasingly involved in local music making, first conducting the Aldeburgh Music Club Choir in May 2007. Edmond was appointed Director of Music of Aldeburgh Music Club in 2008, and was Musical Director of the Phoenix Singers from 2009 to 2012. Edmond is the conductor of the Prometheus Orchestra which has given concerts in Ipswich, Bury St Edmunds, Aldeburgh, Orford, Framlingham, Hadleigh, Stoke by Nayland, Woodbridge and Snape Maltings. Programmes have included a range of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven symphonies and works by Elgar, Grieg, Wagner and Schubert. He was

appointed CBE in the Queen’s 2008 Birthday Honours for services to music and education. In 2016, the Young Musician of the Year Competition attracted over 40 entries from children representing 12 schools across the county, and the standard of those entering the competition continues to be exceptionally high. It is always wonderful to hear so many enthusiastic, passionate and committed performances from local young musicians. Everyone who chooses to enter should be very proud of their achievements as they undertake their journey in music. The forthcoming competition will take place this year on Thursday 9 and Friday 10 March 2017, and the deadline for entries is Friday 17 February 2017. REPORT

uty Craze Winter’16 Big Bea

CHROME S T C E F F E L I NA

S

uper metallic and foiledfinish nail polishes have always been pretty droolworthy. But a chrome manicure takes a mirrored, high-shine finish to the next level. Of course, achieving a chrome manicure is not that simple as there are quite a few steps, and a lot of curing, that needs to happen for chrome nails to look their best – this high-shine finish shows up every mistake so its worth paying for professional results. It is possible to achieve this look at home if you are competent at manicures and own the right tools but if you don’t have the equipment, aren’t much of a DIY-er, or just don’t want to have to clean up a load of sparkly powder, you’re probably better off finding a nail tech who can chrome up your nails for you. Image Salon in Ipswich offers the technique and will provide you with the perfect chrome manicure with the longevity to see you through the Christmas

56

and New Year parties without any chips or scratches. To begin, nails are prepped and shaped and cuticles are smooth and pushed back. Your nail will then be buffed to remove shine and cleansed to ensure that any potential contaminants that could interfere with the application process are removed. Then, a thin layer of gel-polish base coat is applied and cured under the LED lamps. The second step involves the application of a thin layer of black gel-polish which again will be cured under the lamps before the process is repeated to give your nails the right base for the chrome pigment to sit on. The technician will then apply a thin layer of tack-free top coat which will also require a 30-second cure and following this, a non-wipe top coat ensures your nails are covered with a tack-free surface which ensures the chrome pigment can properly adhere to the nail.

And now the application of the chrome pigment can start. An applicator or silicone brush is used to pick up a small amount of chrome pigment – a little goes a long way so again, this is where skill and training is important. They will use firm pressure as they apply it directly to the cured layer of top coat, working from cuticle to free edge, and along the sidewalls, to smooth out the pigment and reveal the mirror effect. A circular motion ensures that the pigment is properly burnished onto the nail which increases its durability and gives you more wear for your money. The finishing touch? Another thin layer of non-wipe top coat and one last cure for 30 seconds under those LED lamps and you and your Chrome manicure are good to go! Chroming is available with gelish manicure - £1.50 per nail or £10 for a full set Image Salon, 16 Old Foundry Road, Ipswich 01473 222188 www.imagesalon.co.uk

lot has changed in the world of facial aesthetics since Dr Lina Strachan began practicing nine years ago. For a start, there are numerous clinics and salons offering rejuvenating treatments and choosing a practitioner has become a minefield in itself. A practitioner’s credentials need to be put under scrutiny, if you want to ensure the very best and safest treatment, before any is embarked upon. Dr Lina’s credentials speak for themselves. Originally training as a dentist, she began working in facial aesthetics in 2007,

fascinated by how you can appear to reverse the ageing process or make someone look more beautiful without surgery. She now teaches other professionals – dentists, nurses, doctors and plastic surgeons and was headhunted by Swiss company Teoxane to become their VIP trainer in the UK. Lina’s speciality is to work across the face as a whole, rather than targeting smaller, isolated areas. This ensures that the face is balanced and that more natural effects can be achieved, avoiding the unsightly mistakes (lumpiness, exaggerated features

and lopsided effects) that still scare some people away from trying aesthetics. Expert in advanced techniques for areas such as cheek and tear troughs, lips, chins and temples Lina can also work wonders with reshaping a nose, just using fillers. “The result I’m trying to create is not to change someone’s face but to make them look like their best selves: beautiful, glowing and confident.” explains Dr Lina. “I also try to teach other practitioners to have the same approach, and that they use only the safest techniques.” The procedures she performs are not permanent. The results wear off or can be immediately reversed using antidotes which will disperse the filler. Not surprisingly, she has been sought out by women that have undergone procedures they are unhappy with, and has managed to successfully reverse them.

N

eedless to say Dr Lina is in high demand, especially since winning two accolades at the 2016 Aesthetic Dentistry Awards for her full-face treatments and mid-face fillers. She dedicates two days a week to working from A&L Clinics in Lower Brook Street and two days a week at a clinic in London’s Harley Street. n FOR MORE INFORMATION on treatments and pricing visit www.aandlclinics.com Vanilla December 2016/January 2017

BEAUTY

LET IT SHINE! With the holidays fast approaching, the team at Francesco Hair Salon have these golden rules for good hair care…

4. AVOID HOT WATER

Hot water can be damaging to hair, plus it will strip down tone from coloured hair. Try to keep the water as cool as possible. 5. TOWEL-DRY BEFORE CONDITIONING 1. WASH YOUR HAIR FREQUENTLY

Washing your hair on a regular basis removes dead skin cells from the scalp, promoting healthy growth while rehydrating and strengthening your hair. We encourage our clients to wash their hair daily if at all possible! 2. USE LESS SHAMPOO

Almost everyone uses too much shampoo and overdoing it will cause your hair to look dull. Use 20p coin sized amount for for shorter hair, while longer hair will need a 50p-sized amount. 3. SHAMPOO THE SCALP ONLY

It's not just how much shampoo you use, but where you apply it that counts. Apply shampoo to the scalp only, not the ends of your hair. The lather will naturally rinse down so your hair will be cleansed without the need to scrub. December 2016/January 2017 Vanilla

Hair that’s saturated with water doesn’t have room to absorb anything else. By removing excess water from the hair before conditioning you will notice healthier looking glossy hair. 6. TAKE CARE OF WET HAIR

Your hair is most fragile and more susceptible to breakage when it is wet. Use a wide-tooth comb on wet hair rather than a brush, which can stretch and break the hair. Avoid cheap plastic combs which can cut into your hair. 7. WAIT BEFORE BLOW-DRYING

Allow your hair at least 10 minutes to dry under a towel before blow-drying. Apply a heat protection spray to cut down on heat exposure, which is very damaging to hair. Avoid the highest heat setting on your hairdryer, your hair will thank you in the long run! n

DENIM HAIR is the newest colour craze. (Kylie Jenner, Nicole Ritchie). Adam Reed has developed three blue hues for L’Oreal Professional so that there is one to suit everyone. Stonewash for a subtle change in natural hair, Indigo for adding intense warm colour and Midnight Ink for those who dare to go darker. For those of you that prefer to stay BLONDE we’re moving away from the cool, platinum, lilac looks of last summer and we’re starting to warm things up slightly with hints of rose gold, opal and apricot. Use Redken Blonde Idol shampoo and conditioner to keep lightened hair looking healthy and fresh. Balayage and Ombré looks are still very popular so ask your stylist to frame your face and lighten your ends for a natural sun-kissed look. RED-HEADS should aim for multi-dimensional colours. Ask for both copper and warm blonde highlights on your red base to add texture. Reds fade fast, so use a colour depositing conditioner to keep your colour fresh. Revisit your salon every 6-8 weeks for a glossing service to keep the colour looking fresh. Choppier styles are popular this year so PAIR YOUR COLOUR with a layered bob, shag cut or feathered fringe for a rock chick look.

NEW YEAR NEW YOU!

January is traditionally the month in which the machinery of your life should be given a complete overhaul. Here’s a little help from Vanilla... HOW TO GET FIT IN 2017 by Chris Lawson CrossFit ISC

At CrossFit ISC, January can be a time where an influx of new members come through our doors with aspirations. While we can’t claim to have a “one answer for all”, we do promote a philosophy of training which we believe works for our members and can also work for you. TRAIN AS PART OF A GROUP: Group training is more than just numbers. The support and encouragement you receive from your peers can have a positive effect on your own training. Knowing other people have been in the exact same position as you is a comforting factor and motivation in its own right to push yourself along with the rest of the group. Outside of training, friendships we have seen formed make it more than just a gym environment. This is a place where you can share social experiences and feel part of a community. MAKE THE MOST OF THE TIME YOU HAVE:

Modern day life is fast and busy. Finding the time to exercise can sometimes be harder than the exercise itself! So with whatever time you do have, make sure it is utilised to full effect. At CrossFit ISC, all of our sessions are coach-led, specifically planned and designed to use the whole hour to maximum effect. This way our members’ exercise time is being utilised as best it can. THERE IS NO TIME LIMIT!: Possibly the most

important of all. Fitness and exercise does not have an ending and this is where it’s beauty lies! There are always things to improve, new challenges to try and new goals to set! One of the most common things we hear is “It never gets any easier!”. Nor should it. As your

December 2016/January 2017 Vanilla

“As your fitness improves, as does your ability to push that little bit harder” fitness improves, as does your ability to push that little bit harder, to try something you thought you couldn't do. This comes over time and as part of our members lives, we encourage them to embrace it. Of course New Years goals are great but we challenge our members to look further than that and not be restricted by time. www.crossfit–isc.co.uk

WELLBEING

A Head chatter? Overthinking? Life on autopilot? Are you living in the past or in the future and ignoring the present ? It is happening to us all and sometimes seems to take control of our lives so we may become anxious, stressed and over tired.

Mindfulness is a current buzz word, schools are doing it, MPs are doing it, tennis players are doing it and newspapers are reporting it – but what actually is mindfulness? Mindfulness is a learnt technique that encourages moments of mental stillness and awareness to help develop strategies for dealing with life’s stresses and strains. You learn how to reflect on rather than react to strong emotions, develop coping strategies for dealing with anxiety and stress and to become more aware of the present moment. Mindfulness will not eliminate life’s pressures but can help us respond to them in a calm manner. It has no religious dimensions and you are not trying to achieve some mystical state or spiritual transcendence; just being you. I have been a teacher in a secondary school for 25 years and over the past few years I took up practising mindfulness to enhance my quality of life. I was so encouraged by its benefits to me and my pupils that I have now trained to teach mindfulness to adults and children. I am passionate about mental health for teenagers. For information about taster sessions and the courses that I run – Mindfulness for Me – a lighter approach to Mindfulness, please find me on facebook Right Now Works or email me at amb@rightnowworks.co.uk.

t the Penny Jones Pilates studio at the Suffolk Food Hall in Wherstead, you’ll find seven highlyqualified instructors who, between them, have more than sixtyfive years’ experience teaching Pilates. “Pilates is the perfect exercise for all ages and abilities”, says Studio Director Penny Jones. “It can be tailored to meet any need. The results are a leaner, stronger and more flexible body. Simply by making your spine more mobile and improving the quality of your breathing, you will improve your quality of life. Just ask the 250 people who come to us each week!” The Studio specialises in Pilates mat-classes and an expanding range of individualised classes on Pilates apparatus but also hosts yoga, Feldenkrais and Chi Kung. Penny says: “The physical and spiritual benefits of Pilates are now universally accepted. And there aren’t many better ways to earn yourself a Suffolk Food Hall coffee and slice of cake!”

NEED SOME EXTRA HELP KEEPING THOSE NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS? What is Hypnotherapy? Hypnotherapy is a natural, relaxed state of altered awareness, that all of us have experienced at some time before. An example of this is when you may have been driving and not been able to recall part of the journey. Or day dreaming. You are just deeply relaxed, but awake and in control at all times. It is a pleasant, relaxing and tranquil experience and you will be able to recall everything that happens afterwards. How can it help? Great results have been

experienced by those seeking help with giving up smoking, weight-loss, depression, anxiety and phobias. If you’ve been struggling with any of these issues then it could be hypnotherapy will help you achieve your goals once and for all... www.anitahughes.co.uk

YUMIat LASH LIFT Lift Beauty Clinic A

s we approach Christmas and New Year, the parties and celebrations start and for a lucky few, exotic holidays to jet away to. We naturally want to look our best and if you want to avoid mascara runs and the constant re-application of eye make-up, you might be interested in a revolutionary lash technique offered by one of Ipswich’s beauty salons. The Lift Beauty Clinic has trained therapists to offer the Yumi Lash Lift, an advanced technique that has been described as a “push up bra” for the lashes, designed to boost and lift them in a remarkable 3D way. Unlike lash perms, which simply curve the eyelash without taking

68

the natural growth pattern of your lashes into consideration, the Yumi Lash Lift treatment turns lashes upwards, giving them length, height and volume. “Lash lifting, when properly done, is everything that you hoped lash perming would be” says salon owner Hayley Capey. “The results we have with Yumi are amazing, it’s hard to believe they are just natural lashes with no extensions.” The lash lift takes just 45 minutes to do and is comfortable and stress-free although you will need to pop in for a patch test at least 24 hours before the procedure. The therapist provides clients with a thorough consultation before embarking

o what advantages does the Yumi Lash Lift system offer over others, you might ask? Lash extensions have been popular for some time now, offering instant results but over time they tend to become brittle and dry out which can impact upon your own natural lashes, even breaking them off. Keratin, that is used in the Yumi system, enhances the natural lashes without the use of false lashes or glue which can be a plus point for those customers concerned about the potential damage from glues. Yumi lash lifts help to curve your own eyelashes upwards, which gives them length, height and volume and last between 8-12 weeks which mimics the life cycle of eyelashes. Plus the application of coenzyme Q10 gel pads under the eyes during the treatment, offer ‘anti-aging properties’ says Yumi, which is always a bonus after late night carousing! VANILLA READER OFFER

YOUR BEAUTY QUESTIONS SOLVED ...by Sue Carter and the team at Image

I THINK YEARS OF WEARING MASCARA HAS DAMAGED MY LASHES. HOW CAN I MAKE MY NATURAL LASHES LOOK FULLER AND THICKER?

removal could also be an issue. Anyone with slightly thicker or curlier hair around their bikini line may develop ingrown hairs at any point, as it is naturally harder for coarser hair to come up to the surface of the skin. Also anyone with drier skin will be more susceptible, as flaky, dead skin cells block the hair’s path to the surface of the skin. Exfoliating gently in the area of concern is key and should help, but if all of the above doesn’t work, there are some great products you can buy especially to combat ingrown hair.

There are a few steps you can take to prevent further damage and to get fuller, longer lashes. 1. Always remove eye make-up at night using a very gentle eye make-up remover. 2. Apply a primer before your mascara, as this will protect and condition your lashes. 3. Try using a lash serum, there are many on the market, the best known one is Revitalise. Applying a serum everyday, to the root of your lashes, will promote healthy growth whilst lengthening and repairing damaged lashes.

WHAT IS YOUR OPINION ON THE FAKE FULL LIPS THAT ARE POPULAR AT THE MOMENT?

WHY DO I GET INGROWN HAIRS AROUND MY BIKINI LINE?

Ingrown hairs are what you get when hair grows back inwards into the skin. I have found this to be more of a problem that occurs after shaving rather than waxing. The problem might be exacerbated by shaving against the hair growth, reusing the blade too many times, or perhaps applying too much pressure while shaving or using an epilator. Not prepping the skin and hair properly before hair

70

Studies have shown that having big lips actually makes you look younger, perhaps this is why it has become so popular? I really like full lips, whether they are real or fake, as long as they don’t look ‘over done’. You don’t have to have filler to get a great full lip look. There are lipsticks on the market that have natural lip plumping ingredients in them which give a fuller pout. Also using a lipliner can have amazing results. Apply the liner just above the natural lip line to give the illusion that you have bigger lips and finish with a good lip gloss for a visibly fuller pout. It’s also worth remembering there are organic ingredients that can help plump lips, such as salt, cinnamon and beeswax. Pout those lips ladies! n

T MAY SEEM obvious, but a good storage makes a home feel more spacious and if clutter is tidied away, than a room will feel bigger. Successful storage needs careful consideration especially if the space is tight. When planning new storage, evaluate what you really need to keep, get rid of things that are unnecessary, be ruthless, and store things in the room where they will be used. That way they will be easy to get hold of and put away. Mix up, easy access open storage for regularly used items and closed storage for items rarely used. ● The iconic “Bateau Bath” has been loved since its first inception in 1890. Praised for its elegant symmetry, it was referred to as the “Boat Bath” due to its rolled top and comfortable interior. Traditionally made in cast iron, manufacturers have taken inspiration from its classic shape and experimented with different materials to reflect the everchanging bathroom market. The world’s first acrylic Boat Bath was created 15 years ago and still retains the classic lines of the original design. A solid cast, hand-polished Aluminium version is a showstopper, much lighter than the cast iron models of yesteryear and does not tarnish like the original. BC Designs offer a painting service on all of their Boat Baths where customers can choose colours from Farrow & Ball and The Little Greene Paint Company to match their décor. Each bath is painted by hand in their workshop based in Colchester, Essex. Available from Ipswich Bathroom & Tile Centre

STYLE FILE BY DARRELL SMITH ARCHWAY CARPETS, WOODBRIDGE

Christmas and Carpets... Your Survival Guide

1

Need a new carpet by Christmas? At Archway Carpets we have a selection of carpets ready to be fitted for the festive season. However it’s better to give yourself time to choose rather than rush a decision just in order to have something fitted.

If you have a spillage, don’t panic!

2

A wool-based carpet will not only add warmth but atmosphere to a room. With new patterns and designs available from manufactures such as Adam Carpets and Lifestyle Flooring you are spoilt for choice.

3

No matter how careful we all are, sometimes that spill does happen. Firstly, do not panic. All you need is warm water in a spray bottle and a roll of plain white kitchen roll. Blot as much of the liquid up as you can. Spray warm water on the effected area and continue to blot until the stain is out. DO NOT RUB, this just works the stain deeper into the pile. If in doubt, call in professional cleaning company... we can recommend one to you.

Consider a fire retardant hearth rug to save your main carpet from damage

4

A hearth rug will save the main carpet from embers or a hot poker. Choose a wool-based one as wool is a natural fire retardant. We have rugs available to take away for just £24.99 or a made-tomeasure rug can be ready within 14 days.

5

Flooring should work for all seasons. Enjoy your Christmas knowing that your carpets and vinyls can withstand the pressures of the festive season! ● For more information or advice drop in to Archway Carpets or call 01394 386684. #fashionforyourfloor.

Cut out & keep recipe Steven Smith’s leftover turkey sandwich recipe makes a welcome alternative to the standard white-bread-and-cranberry-sauce combination that is normally eaten on Boxing day. Leftover turkey sandwich with cream cheese and mizuna Makes 4 sandwiches 8 slices of rye or multiseed bread 10 generous slices white turkey meat 100 grams sliced/ flaked turkey leg meat 1 granny smith apple sliced 24 pecan nuts roughly chopped 1 stick celery finely chopped 40g mizuna 120g cream cheese or Philadelphia Salt and pepper 2 tbspns hazelnut vinaigrette 25g butter TO MAKE : 1 Butter all of the bread. TIME TO TALK TURKEY

Turnbull Turkeys offer a wide range of prime, farm fresh table poultry reared in the heart of the Suffolk countryside at Gosbeck. The turkeys have space, fresh air and sunlight and are fed on home-produced food with no artificial growth promoters or GM crops involved and fattening takes at least 22 weeks which all ensures the best possible flavour and texture. Order your Christmas bird online today at www.turnbullturkeys.co.uk or call 01473 890210. Collection is on 23rd & 24th December. HOW TO COOK YOUR BIRD Follow these simple steps from butcher, Gerard King, of Salter & King at Aldeburgh, and you won’t go wrong with your bird.

● Weigh your turkey after stuffing and leave bird to come up to room temperature.

● More than 4kg weight? Cook for 20 minutes per kg and add 90 minutes at the end.

● Cover the breast with strips of bacon or smear with softened butter then cover loosely with foil.

● Remove the foil for the last 40 minutes so the top can brown.

● Preheat your oven to 190°C (180°C for fan assisted ovens), 375°F, Gas Mark 5.

● Ovens vary so always test your turkey. Pierce the thickest part with a skewer and check juices run clear.

● Less than 4kg weight? Cook for 20 minutes per kg then add another 70 minutes cooking time at the end.

● Allow to stand for 15-20 minutes in a warm place – it won’t go cold and will be easier to carve.

EVENTS TUESDAY 6 DECEMBER

Champagne Evening Join us for a delectable evening with Bollinger and Ayala champagnes served alongside a wonderful five-course menu. Enjoy premium champagnes paired with matching courses. £60 per person, inclusive of drinks and dinner. 7pm.

Red or white with turkey? Christmas is all about sharing great moments, particularly when it comes to dining with friends and family. Whilst the focus is often on the food, accompanying drinks can elevate an already special occasion into something wonderful. But when it comes to wine, do you choose red or white for Christmas dinner? The answer is, well, both! Here are my top tips, including wines that we serve here at The Crown. SATURDAY 31 DECEMBER

RED: Pinot Noir is widely argued to be the perfect red

accompaniment to roast turkey. Whilst traditionally quite light, there are variations. For lighter, more delicate styles, try American pinot. For richer, fuller flavours, head to Chile or Argentina. Want to impress? Try a 2011 Pinot Noir by Forrest Estate, New Zealand. Brilliant budget? 2013 Vieilles Vignes (old vines) Merlot Reserve, France. WHITE: Chardonnay is the Pinot Noir of whites when it

comes to pairing with Christmas turkey. Buttery, rounded textures pair wonderfully with poultry. Other whites which work well include good quality Pinot Grigio. For something different, you can’t go wrong with a German Riesling. Want to impress? Try a 2011 Semillon Juniper Estate Chardonnay, Margaret River, Australia. Brilliant budget? 2013 Pinot Grigio Tre Fili, Cantina San Marziano, Italy. From all of us at The Crown, we wish you a wonderful festive season! www.thecrownatwoodbridge.co.uk

QUA EIGHT is stylish, slick and still popular five years after scooping the runner up prize for best restaurant and best place to drink at the prestigious Observer Food Monthly Awards. The two storey pan-Asian restaurant and bar is glamorous and self assured. The eighties retro blue light and glass top tables add sparkle to the winter night making this a perfect place for a bit of seasonal celebrating. The downstairs bar serves a vast array of cleverly concocted cocktails. White Mountain was fresh lime, sake and Archers with a gorgeous dusting of icing sugar on the rim of the martini glass for that snowy festive feel. Mixologist extrordinaire Reg has gone a step further in his bid for creating the perfect Christmas drink. Christened

N THE restaurant the menu is divided up for appetites and occasions and there’s plenty of opportunity to pick your Asian favourites or to allow the Chef to recommend according to your preferences. Tasting plates included fat fingers of asparagus wrapped in slithers of chargrilled sirloin steak and glistening in a teriyaki sauce. A tiny

lattice of rice paper leaves sat atop the classic chilli and pepper squid, with a batter as light and white as a cloud, beautifully adorned with tiny twirls of onions and sweet peppers. Soft shell crabs with red chilli and curly leaf are one of the Chef’s signature dishes and are delicate and intricate, served spilling from a lobster pot basket. Tempura prawns with a spicy lemon dressing are a work of art – their yellow batter backs arched against a black plate, with a wickedly delicious dipping sauce.

L

amb cutlets with Malaysian nyonya sauce – zingy coconut milk and lime – were gorgeous, served with a platter of mixed vegetables in teriyaki sauce. The Alaskan black cod with miso was sublime, dainty flakes of white moist fish. The desserts are a beauty to behold too – a platter adorned with tiny glasses of bright mango

Fiona Coe Head of womenswear, Coes

My East Coast Life

Fiona Coe is Head of womenswear at Coes. Originally from a small village just outside Saffron Walden in Essex, she moved to Ipswich when she married her husband, William Coe. They met in Cambridge having worked together at a large accountancy firm. They have two children, Sophie 17 and Charlie 13.

What did you know, if anything, about Coes before joining the family in 1997? I did’t know anything about Coes or Ipswich, in fact, before I met William. We used to travel back from Cambridge for the weekend and that was my first introduction to the town and surrounding area. I sensed straight away that Coes was clearly a well-loved institution in the town and that local people were very fond of its heritage. Everyone I met at the time could tell you a story about

their connection with Coes, whether it be their first school uniform, first suit or a wedding. How long was it before you started working in the business? We moved to Ipswich in 1997 and I worked for Guardian Insurance (now Axa) on Civic Drive until I had Sophie in 1999. At that time Coes were keen to set up a womenswear department, so I jumped at the chance to be involved. Were you always interested in retail and fashion? My background was in marketing so fashion and retail were relatively new to me, although I have always had a creative streak. From an early age I have loved fabric and remember wanting to design and make my own clothes like my mother did for me as a child – so maybe it was hidden in there somewhere!

How much has changed at Coes over the last 20 years? So so much has changed. The whole retail market has shifted completely with the arrival of online shopping. Customers expect a certain level of service and a modern environment in which to shop. We are constantly evolving whether it be through technology, modernisation of our stores or the type of stock we sell. I quickly realised that you can't stand still in retail, if you do you won't survive in today's competitive market. You and William are both familiar faces at Coes, do you think one of your children will follow you into the business? Who knows! We would never put any pressure on them to be involved. We both think, like we did, that it’s vitally important for them to explore and travel before settling on their future. Having said this, they are already both keen to earn some extra money in the holidays! When you are off duty what's your favourite thing to do? Oh gosh, I’m not very good at sitting down. I run a lot and find this a great way to relax and clear my head. I absolutely love art and design whether it be fashion, interiors or my garden. I am always reading, searching or visiting inspirational places. n
