L ess is M ore Yes, we know you’ve heard this before. Although you want full coverage, try to go for less foundation – as little as you can get away with so your natural beauty can shine through. Or use the same amount of foundation but blend it with a big brush to avoid caking product onto the skin.

C o v er y o u r bases These days, there’s a plethora of primers out there to help your makeup glide on and stay put.

The Urban Decay eyeshadow primer potion is still a firm favourite and although pricey, the NARS smudge proof eyeshadow base is a worthy investment.

Do check the ingredients in your foundation. If it comes with SPF, it may contain titanium oxide and zinc oxide – angels by day but devils by night because they can lend a white cast to your face during flash photography.

For face primers, try the Smashbox photo finish foundation primer, Murad skin perfecting primer matte finish or the Hourglass veil mineral primer.

If you really can’t avoid using a foundation with SPF, do your best to blend your foundation down your neck and on your ears.

But if you don’t want to shell out for an expensive primer, some serums and mosturisers can also double up as a primer.

If you are using an oil-based moisturiser, don’t pair it with a water-based foundation unless you want your makeup to start slipping and sliding.

T h e ri g h t settin g Remember the tragic and now infamous photos of Eva Longoria and Nicole Kidman with random white powder on their faces?

Yes, we know that High Definition or HD powder can give the skin a gorgeous finish but it is not flash photography friendly.

Try a translucent setting powder like Laura Mercier’s loose setting powder or MAC’s mineralize skinfinish.

Don’t get lazy. Avoid sloppy cleansing and don’t skip your moisturiser. But avoid trying any new products in case you get an unexpected and nasty skin reaction.

Plan your wardrobe in advance.

Check that you’ve stocked up on essentials and that your beauty tools are working. You don’t want to run out of eyelash glue or have your curling iron malfunction. Yikes.

Day 3

Try a teeth whitening toothpaste or treatment to maintain a dazzling smile.

Meantime, avoid coffee, tea, wine and foods like berries.

Get a face and body massage or go for a detoxifying spa.

If you don’t have time, a body brush (use on dry skin) is a perfect way to give your circulation a boost.

Day 8 Sleep early, get enough rest, drink plenty of water and take your vitamins. Sure, there are ways to hide sleep-deprived eyes and sallow skin but make an impression with a naturally fresh look instead!

Day 2 Time for your manicure and pedicure! We know that nail art is all the rage but make sure it goes with your overall look.

If it is a really important event, you might want to do a “dry run” the day before. If not, just relax and sleep early!

Exercise will help you improve overall muscle tone, circulation and skin tone. Make time for a brisk walk or run but don’t overexert your muscles.

Day 6 Gently exfoliate your face and body every other day.
