BEHIND K’PURE Founder of K’pure Natural Body Care tells us the story behind the brand and how it started I’m Karen Johnson, the creator of K’pure Natural Body Care. This business kind of happened by accident. Seven years ago, when our youngest son (we have 3 boys and a girl) was a newborn, I found out at our naturopath appointment that he had abnormally high levels of aluminum and plastics in his system. I was shocked and confused. He was breastfed, how was this possible? Turns out, my deodorant was loaded with aluminum and my lotions with plastics, which were making their way into my breast milk. What you put on your body is just as important as what you put in your body. This is where my quest for natural skin and body care started. I researched deodorant

recipes and after five years of trial and error, that recipe has been perfected. As a personal trainer and Bootcamp instructor, I had the ideal platform to test my products. After giving the deodorant to my friends and clients to try, I couldn’t make it fast enough! And it quickly turned into a business, adding the rest of our great products along the way. Each product is made with the strictest attention to quality control and detail. As a busy mom of four young kids, feeling confident about what I put in and on our bodies is super important to me, and I hope that I can help make those decisions easier for you and your family too!

ENTANGLED: TWO VIEWS ON CONTEMPORARY CANADIAN PAINTING - Vancouver Art Gallery

VANCOUVER ART SCENE

Current highlights of Vancouver’s vibrant and growing art scene.

After a successful array of Spring-Summer exhibitions that included Claude Monet’s Secret Garden, the Vancouver Art Gallery opened a new exhibit, Entangled: Two Views on Contemporary Canadian Painting, last September 30, 2017 to public. The exhibition features artists and painting practices from across the country and is on view until January 1, 2018. It also offered insights into two distinctly different approaches that have come to dominate contemporary painting in this country. The origins of both can be traced back to the 1970’s, to a moment when the continued existence of painting was hotly debated. So the next time you need a boost of inspiration, drop by the gallery and check out this exhibition and the ones to come.

by Patti Yabut

LOVING VINCENT - Vancouver International Film Festival VIFF presented the world’s first fully-painted feature film, Loving Vincent, last September 28 and 30. Both days were packed with art enthusiasts eager to peak into the life of one of the most contoversial painters of the 19th century. Dorota Kobiela and Hugh Welchman’s remarkable animated work brings to life the paintings of Vincent van Gogh via a kind of rotoscoping technique similar to the one used in Richard Linklater’s

Waking Life but with an obsessive attention to detail never seen before. To wit: the film took seven years to make, and each of its 65,000 frames was hand-painted by one of 115 professional oil-painters.

CAFE TERRACE AT NIGHT Painter: Marlena Jopyk Misiak

More than 130 paintings by van Gogh serve as the initial backgrounds for a kind of detective tale wherein Armand Roulin (Douglas Booth), the son of the postmaster in Arles, tries to understand how the painter (Robert Gulaczyk) could go from the tranquil artist he knew to a suicide in only six weeks. Travelling from Arles in the south, where van Gogh produced some of his most amazing work, to Auvers-surOise, near Paris, where the painter died and is buried (alongside brother Theo), Roulin questions those close to van Gogh in his quest for knowledge. And all the while, he is immersed in the world of the master’s paintings—and so are we.

COMFORT and the FANTASTIC little foxes A fantastic season of autumnal hues and simple designs for a modern minimalist look your little foxes will adore. Bring out your playful side with lively prints, bright colours, and lots of layers for a friendly season full of fun and play! ABOUT THE BRANDS PLAID & PAISLEY When our grandmother was raising children, it was in a time where simplicity took precedence. The average closet consisted of a couple Sunday Bests, a few tops and bottoms, a pair of shoes for play, and a pair for special occasions. Clothing was more expensive, as it was crafted with time and care, so people bought less. Mamas carefully hand selected items for their littles’ wardrobes, that they loved. These garments were cherished, and treated with care. Nowadays, our closets are filled with chaos and clutter. Nothing has a rhyme or a reason. We spend mornings rummaging through the mounds of laundry, consisting of scratchy, stretched out fabrics. Your little’s adorable shirt, is now a box, with 3 small holes and relentlessly itchy tag. So many items, yet so few outfits. This is a sad tale, that replays every morning, in most North American households. This creates clutter in our homes, our hearts, and our minds. At Plaid & Paisley,

we believe there is beauty in simplicity. There is freedom in owning less and loving it more.

detailed, fun, fashionable and durable apparel for your busy little birds.

The capsule closet provides mamas with this freedom. By creating smaller wardrobes with quality, handcrafted items that are easily interchangeable, mamas are able to spend less time washing, folding and organizing clothing, and more time loving, hugging and playing with their littles. This is why at Plaid & Paisley, we want to help mamas everywhere adapt to the Parisian concept of buying less and choosing well. Simplicity is the keynote to a mindful home.

Launched in July of 2016, Os & Oakes is the creation of duo Erika Oakes and her brother Michael Lipari. As a mom of two toddler boys, Erika felt inspired to produce a line of clothing that her kids could play in comfortably, while looking fashionable and on-trend. Michael also felt compelled to design a sleek contemporary brand, that would portray an adult look for toddlers. Partnering up, they decided to put their visions into action and started their company.

Plaid & Paisley Little Inspirations blog is about inspiring mamas to live an enriching life. Knowing that everyday isn’t perfect, but in each day there can be a moment. A moment of pure bliss, wholesome laughter, and memories that will be etched into the core of your littles. The kind of memories that stay with them through life. An attitude that will be passed down from generation to generation. Let us inspire you to create these moments, and cherish them with your littles for a lifetime.

All of our clothing products are made of an incredibly soft, bamboo-blend, sustainable fabric that is durable and ethically made. hair&makeup trends

Fashion is about so much more than clothes. Hair and makeup are simple and trendy ways to add your own style and personality by Emma Tyrchniewicz to any outfit. We here at VKFW chose our favourite trends from the runway for the fall/winter season for you to try at home.

NATURAL BEAUTY Let your beauty shine through with a simple, natural look. Always a classic, most of our kid models this season went au naturel to show off their youthful glow. Makeup can be harsh and rough on the skin, so it’s best to keep it light. If you want some coverage, BB cream with SPF is a great way to add extra protection without clogging up your pores. Add some lip balm and you can enhance your natural look while keeping skin hydrated and protected.

TRUE COLOURS Boldly go where no beauty has before with this update on a childhood favourite. Colourful painting around the eyes this season made face painting fashionable. While it’s too avante garde for an every day look, don’t be afraid to explore with colour for a dress up party. While any face paint will do, if you want a more professionally done look try cream eye shadow and don’t forget to blend it together for a flawless ombré effect!

22

VKFW SPRING SUMMER18

BRAIDS Braided styles were everywhere this season and for good reason. Keep your hair out of the way with a style that is easy to upkeep and so versatile. Wear your hair up with dual French braids for a more glamorous style, or go for a more casual look with teased fishtail braids. They can be done quickly, but if you want a lasting style have bobby pins on hand, invisible hair ties and hairspray. Any outfit will look cuter with a pair of braids to accessorize!

ALL BUNNED UP We love how this season brought a summery and fin vibe to fall collections with all kinds of cute buns. Keep your hair up and out of your beautiful face with this great go-to hairstyle. There are so many different options to explore with pixie buns, braided buns, and simple messy buns to go with any type of outfit. They’re easy to do and will stay in place all day with some hairspray and bobby pins. If you’re feeling adventurous, don’t be afraid to accessorize with fun hair ties with bows, jewels, or fun patterns to customize your look!

HATS Beanies and hats dotted the runway this season and they’re our first choice for fall accessories. As the weather gets colder, you can stay cozy and stylish in these minimalist autumnal toned pieces that are easy to pair with any outfit. Dress a classic outfit with a knitted wool or cotton beanie, or stand out this season with an updated favourite: the bonnet. Protect your hair and ears with this simple and stylish piece that we love for it’s simple design and flawless construction. Whichever you choose, hats are the perfect way to accessorize for fall.

WINTER GET AWAY:

Where to Travel This Season by Emma Tyrchniewicz

With the colder weather encroaching on Vancouver, now is the time to look for a winter vacation to get away from the rain and cold of the city.

Though this time of year sees a rise in popularity in tropical destinations, an untapped wealth of fun and adventure lies just across the Atlantic. Portugal is a rarely discussed European destination that is usually passed up for more popular locations like Italy, Spain, and France. Portugal, however, embodies the old world vibe of Europe without drawing in huge crowds, leaving its cities authentic and creating a lasting and real experience for travellers. Start inland to experience the culture and history of the country in cities like Porto, where there is no shortage of public art, medieval architecture, colourful buildings, and incredible cuisine. Lisbon, its capital. is also a must-see. Softly playing music will lead you down its winding streets to cafes and restaurants with affordable and authentic food, while its museums are full of wonderful artwork and cultural artifacts. If you’re looking for a beach vacation, you won’t have to go far, with cities like Ericeira and Algarve known for their scenic beaches, warm weather, trendy social scene, and delicious seafood. The best part of this undiscovered trove is that the prices don’t mimic the rest of Europe’s inflated rate. Since this destination is still relatively unknown you can travel the country for much cheaper than other countries in Europe, and fall/winter is the perfect time to travel, when the crowds of the summer are gone but the weather is still warm. Indulge your senses and your appetite this season with a trip to historic and beautiful Portugal!

RUNWAY REVIEW

SPRING SUMMER 2018

This season marked the third run of VKFW with the largest participation the event has ever seen! Designers, models, and guests all joined together for two days on September 23rd and 24th at David Lam Hall in downtown Vancouver. The event was a huge success thanks in part to the incredible support of all our staff, volunteers, models, and parents. We would also like to thank our partners and sponsors for the event, including Feng Feng Performance and Education Academy, BC Children’s Hospital, Ronald McDonald House, Vancouver Star Image, Mama Rich, K’Pure, Young Entrepreneurs Learning Labs, and Lights Up! Musical Theatre Company. Our show would not be the same without the hard work of all these people so thank you!

BEHIND THE SCENES

A lot goes on behind the curtains of the runway to make the magic of the show happen. It’s a bit chaotic getting the child models dressed and ready for their walk, but our volunteers and designers had so much fun working with the little angels who bring such a fun and happy energy to our event! We were so lucky to be able to work with such talented kids, that brought professionalism and style to this years runway. On the next page are backstage photos of our models, designers, and staff getting ready to start the show!

BE A DYNAMIC WOMAN by Diane Rolston

The Secret Code to Being Confident, Wealthy & Successful Women Sadly, we think we must follow unspoken rules we must follow in order to be accepted. Rules that dictate how we dress, look and even talk. Rules like society’s titles, labels, and roles from your job, family, and anywhere else, past or present. The problem is they define us and confine us. Instead, ditch society’s titles, labels, and roles, including ones from your jobs, your family, your upbringing, and any other titles from the past that you’ve had. Q: What titles do you currently hold? How are they limiting you? Even the positive labels you might have embraced because you performed really well under them and were even rewarded for them. BC CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL FOUNDATION Vancouver Kids Fashion Week is proud to partner again with the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation. because we believe that fashion shouldn’t just be a luxury, but a culture that can be shared with everyone. A portion of our ticket sales will be donated to the BC Children’s Hospital to help their continued efforts to provide expert health care for children across BC. BC Children’s Hospital is the province’s only fullservice, pediatric acute care hospital and serves the one million children living in BC and the Yukon. All children who are seriously ill or injured are referred to Children’s Hospital and are either treated at the hospital facility in Vancouver or, with consultation from Children’s specialists, in their home community. VKFW once again featured a model that is a former patient of BC Children’s hospital, sixteen year old Simran Sarai, who strutted down the VKFW runway on our Fall Winter 2017 and Spring Summer 2018 showcase! Simran is a leukemia survivor, who now enjoys a bright and optimistic life unhindered by her illness, now going to school full-time. Owing her recovery to the love of her family and the support of her caregivers at BC Children’s Hospital, the future looks bright for Simran.

7 MUST HAVES FOR WINTER WORKOUT WARDROBE

SEPTEMBER: LONG SLEEVE As the temperature drops, your body takes more time to warm up and stay warm. That racerback tank is no longer cutting it on those early morning runs. I like to layer a breathable long sleeve over my tank so I have the option to remove it and tie it around my waist when it gets hot. Add a cute jacket. I love pairing athletic wear with a shrunken denim jacket.

BY: REG LOK VON, BLOGGER AT VALEIO: NOURISH THROUGH MOVEMENT Winter doesn’t mean you have to bundle up like Michelin Man on your run or hike - it just means we can go shopping for warmer workout wear! I have rounded up 8 pieces bound to keep you warm and chic on your outdoor adventures. GAP fit Breathe Tie Back ; H&M Denim Jacket

OCTOBER: THERMAL LAYERS October in Vancouver can get pretty cold and quick. Adding a thermal layer over your tech T or tank helps keep you warm. Some have a mock neck, which will also help retain body heat during breaks. My girls wear them during soccer practice and game days. Adding a vest or fleece zip up will also keep the core warm. Thumb holes also help to keep hands warm on those early morning runs when there is a bite in the air. If you find it harder to keep your lower extremities warm, look for leggings that are made of a thicker material. There are also brushed leggings, which have an extra fleecy layer on the inside. They help retain body heat but still allow the sweat to dissipate.

DECEMBER: LAYERS I’m all about the layers. Although the outdoor workouts usually come to a halt this month, I still get that chill as the body cools. To avoid this, I layer! Following strength workout, I’ll throw on a thicker top with sleeves like a terry cloth crew neck. Who says you can’t look chic and stay dry in athletic wear? Check out the cute details on these: To keep warm when you leave the gym, I like to throw on an insulated coat.

NOVEMBER: WATER REPELLANT JACKET + ACCESSORIES As rainfall increases (and possibly snow), it is probably a good idea to invest in a good waterproof outer layer. Who wants to be cold AND wet after a sweaty bootcamp class or a long hike? Don’t forget a toque and gloves made from breathable materials.

Fall Shopping Tips for Busy Parents: Save Time, Money and Stress by Lara Leontowich

Fall is crunch time for most families with back-to-school and work in full force. Shopping can take up a large chunk of time and be tough on the family budget but it is an ongoing necessity. For parents looking to save money or streamline a system to make weekly shopping trips easier, here are a few tips to keep in mind:

PLAN WEEKLY MEALS IN ADVANCE Sitting down and organizing meals for the week makes it easier to stick to your family’s weekly food budget. Such preplanning also relieves the ongoing stress when the all too familiar question arises at 4pm “What are we having for dinner tonight conversation?” It is easy to rely on a quick convenience food or head to a restaurant when everyone is hungry and nothing is defrosted. Planning ahead is the way to prevent this pattern. Let your children be involved in meal planning, which can get them receptive to healthy meals you are preparing. Chances are they will likely be more willing to trying new dishes too. Many families are now using easy meal-planning apps to organize meals and create shopping lists based on ingredients needed for each meal.

RESEARCH FLYERS AND WEBSITES REGULARLY

Ever walk into the store only to realize you’ve forgot the items you went there for in the first place? Shopping with children can cause anyone to become frazzled and distracted but most of us don’t have the luxury of being able to do it alone on a consistent basis. Creating a shopping list with everything you need to buy in a typical month will help you stay organized. This will make it easier to forecast when you might run out of the last toilet paper roll or need more garbage bags. For those who are budget-conscious, research your weekly flyer in print or online for deals on commonly used products that your family uses. Check out the websites for big box retailers for weekly sales that will help you budget before you run out and have to buy at regular price.

SIMPLIFY SHOPPING FOR CHILDREN’S CLOTHES As each season changes, keep in mind that your child may have outgrown key such staple items as jackets and shoes, so watch for off-season sales year-round. In the fall, when you take a closer look at all your child’s pants you stored away for the

summer, you may soon discover your son or daughter has grown a few inches. This change may go unnoticed during those warmer months when your children are typically wearing shorts. Shopping for children’s clothes can be tedious. So before “crunch time” (when the weather suddenly turns cooler, and your children needs new pants) sort through your children’s clothes and determine the items you want to keep; those that are worn out and those they have outgrown. This gives you a clear idea of what you have, and what you need to buy. If your child hasn’t worn some clothes in over a year, consider selling or donating those clothing items. To identify the clothes your child has not worn in a year, put all the hangers on the rack backwards at the start of the school year. If a hanger is still backwards by the time the next school year rolls around, you will soon be able to identify clothes your son or daughter is not wearing. As parents, it can seem that our life is consumed with shopping of one type or another. Whether it is weekly grocery trips or hitting the shopping mall for children’s clothes, preplanning is the key to making the process a smoother one.

MEAL PLANNING TIPS FOR BUSY FAMILIES by Jean Lomas-Hamilton

Between work, school, daycare, sports, and whatever else you have going on, family life can be challenging to choreograph. As working parents with a toddler and now a newborn, meal planning has been our saving grace to ensure everyone is fed and happy in the small window between getting home and bedtime. Here are my top tips for coming up with a weekly meal plan that works for your family: PLAN YOUR MEALS TO FIT YOUR LIFE, AND NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND. When planning what to eat, consider what else you’re doing that week. For days when your schedule is packed, choose simple recipes that will come together quickly. Save more elaborate meals for less busy days, or plan to make some components in advance so you’ll have less to do at dinnertime. POST YOUR PLAN SOMEWHERE VISIBLE. The whiteboard on our fridge is my favourite kitchen acquisition of the past two years. I use it to map out all our meals and activities for the week, along with any advance prep needed (for example, a reminder to take chicken out of the freezer or mix long-rising dough a day in advance) and a grocery list. I also save everything into my phone for easy access from work, but the whiteboard has been a game changer since it decentralizes responsibility for the weekly schedule – so whoever gets home first can see the plan and get dinner started. PLAN A LITTLE EVERY DAY. With two small kids, I rarely have time to sit down for long enough to dream up a week’s worth of meals all at once. Instead, I chip away at it daily, jotting down ideas as they come to me. That way when our grocery shopping day rolls around the plan is ready to go, without the need for extra “thinking” time. MAKE EXTRA PORTIONS. I often make a large batch of whatever we’re having so we can either take leftovers for work and daycare lunches, or freeze them for an easy dinner on nights when the plan goes off the rails. Comfort foods tend to freeze well, which makes fall and winter ideal times to do this – and with the busy holiday season approaching it’s always nice to have a few quick meals on hand (pro tip: freeze soup, chili, or curry lying flat in a Ziploc bag so it’ll defrost quickly when you need it). MINIMIZE WASTE AND MAXIMIZE YOUR PANTRY. Some items are sold in larger quantities than we’d normally use in one recipe (looking at you, fresh parsley). In those cases I try to plan multiple meals with that ingredient to use it all up. Otherwise, I’ll either omit the ingredient entirely, or substitute something I already have on hand. I also keep a list of “to use” items on our whiteboard so I can incorporate older pantry goods in my planning. BE FLEXIBLE. I initially worried that meal planning would be too regimented for me – what if I worked late and didn’t have time to cook? What if we just didn’t feel like eating what was on the schedule for that night? But the beauty of planning your meals and shopping in advance is that you already have all the ingredients on hand to make last-minute changes without the hassle of heading to the store again. Just switch things around and have something you planned for another day – et voilà! Problem solved. For added flexibility, I try to plan at least one dinner that can easily be carried forward to the next week without the ingredients spoiling. Learning how to meal plan effectively was definitely a process of trial and error for us, and while the fact that I’ve never met a list I didn’t like definitely helped, it still took some time to figure out what worked for our family. Meal planning isn’t a onesize-fits-all endeavour but the above guiding principles have helped keep our bellies full and our sanity (mostly) intact – and I hope they’ll do the same for you and yours.

Gone are the days when monochrome is worn all year round. In

retrospect, a few years back designers and evenmore-so, regular people would think twice before pairing a vivid color with an equally bright tone, these days, that does not seem like a bold move anymore. In a generation where you can do as you please, you can also wear as you please.

The rise of the most vibrant colors and festive prints started with womenswear streetstyle pioneered by bloggers and influencers across the globe. As the hype is slowly influencing runway collections, kidswear designers didn’t shy away from bold trend with designers coming up with the most abstract and bizarre prints in every color possible. Stylists layer color after color. Fashion is now as vibrant as it gets.

Appliques and other surface details give more depth than prints.
