Vapouround journalist Oliver Smith selects his top picks of short vape-related stories and research making news around the world.

THE BILL Advances BAT’S Crackdown

British American Tobacco (BAT) is urging U.S. regulators to take stronger action against the rising market for illicit vaping products. BAT’s CEO stated that unregulated, flavoured disposable vapes continue to flood the market, impacting both legal sales and consumer safety. The company hopes that increased enforcement will help stabilise the industry and maintain a regulated environment for adult smokers looking for safer alternatives. As policymakers debate vaping regulations, BAT remains vocal about the need for fair competition and stronger oversight.

AUSTRALIA’S Anti VapeFAILURES

A new study has compared Australia’s strict anti-vape stance with New Zealand’s more progressive harm reduction approach… and the results don’t look good for Australia. Researchers found that New Zealand’s balanced regulation, which allows for adult access to vaping while restricting youth uptake, has contributed to lower smoking rates. Meanwhile, Australia’s prescription-only model has fuelled a booming black market. The findings suggest that over-regulation may be driving consumers toward unregulated products instead of helping them transition away from smoking.

The UK’s proposed Tobacco and Vapes Bill is moving forward, aiming to introduce sweeping changes to the vaping and tobacco industries. The bill includes measures to phase out tobacco sales for younger generations while implementing stricter regulations on vape products. Policymakers insist the legislation strikes a balance between protecting public health and ensuring adult smokers still have access to reducedrisk alternatives. With further debates expected in Parliament, industry leaders are watching closely to see how new rules will impact vapers and businesses in the sector.

STEADY Decline

New data from 2025 shows a decline in youth vaping rates, a win for regulators focused on preventing underage access. The drop follows increased public health campaigns, retailer compliance checks, and age restrictions on disposable vape sales. While concerns about youth vaping persist, experts argue that this downward trend proves regulation is working without compromising access for adult smokers. Advocacy groups continue to push for clear, science-backed policies that separate youth prevention from harm reduction strategies for adult smokers transitioning to vaping.

THAI Crackdown

Authorities in Pattaya have launched a major crackdown on illicit vape sales, aiming to curb the unregulated market and protect consumers. The operation targeted retailers selling noncompliant and counterfeit vape products, which often fail to meet safety standards. Law enforcement officials stressed that while vaping remains an effective harm reduction tool, unregulated sales put public health at risk. This move aligns with global efforts to ensure that vaping remains accessible to adult smokers while preventing the sale of unverified products.

UK’S NEW Vaping Minister

Ashley Dalton MP has been appointed as the new minister overseeing vaping regulations in the UK, replacing Andrew Gwynne. Dalton takes the position at a pivotal moment as the Tobacco and Vapes Bill moves through Parliament. Industry groups and harm reduction advocates are keen to see how she approaches vaping policy, with many urging a balanced stance that protects both public health and consumer choice. Her appointment signals a potential shift in government engagement with the vaping industry.

WVA TO THE RESCUE

The World Vapers’ Alliance (WVA) has hit back at EU Tax Commissioner Paolo Gentiloni for equating vaping with smoking in new taxation plans. The WVA argues that treating safer nicotine alternatives the same as combustible tobacco contradicts harm reduction principles. Vaping advocates fear that excessive taxation could drive ex-smokers back to cigarettes or into black markets. With the EU under pressure to regulate fairly, industry experts warn that failing to differentiate between smoking and vaping could have severe public health consequences.

Millions AND Millions

Authorities in the UK confiscated over £9 million worth of illegal vapes in 2024, highlighting the scale of the black market. The surge in illicit sales is believed to be driven by restrictive regulations that make legal vaping products less accessible. UKVIA has called for stricter enforcement against rogue traders while ensuring that law-abiding retailers are not penalised. The figures underscore the need for balanced policies that encourage compliance rather than driving consumers toward unregulated alternatives.

UKVIA Calls to HEALTH MINISTER

The UK Vaping Industry Association (UKVIA) has formally requested a meeting with the newly appointed Public Health Minister, Ashley Dalton. UKVIA aims to discuss the role of vaping in achieving a smokefree future, pushing for regulation that supports adult smokers rather than penalising them. The association has consistently called for policies that distinguish between youth prevention and harm reduction for smokers. With the Tobacco and Vapes Bill progressing, UKVIA hopes to ensure that vaping remains a recognised tool for smoking cessation.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY NNA

The New Nicotine Alliance (NNA) is marking a decade of championing harm reduction and consumer rights in nicotine policy. Over the past ten years, the NNA has pushed for evidence-based regulations, defended consumer access to safer nicotine products, and challenged misinformation surrounding vaping. As governments continue to debate the role of e-cigarettes, the NNA remains a vocal advocate for policies that prioritise public health over prohibitionist approaches. The organisation’s anniversary underscores the growing influence of consumerled harm reduction movements worldwide.

GFN’S Latest Festival

The Global Forum on Nicotine (GFN) has announced the launch of a new Photo Festival, set to debut at this year’s conference. The initiative aims to showcase images that capture personal and cultural perspectives on nicotine use and harm reduction.

The festival hopes to humanise the vaping debate by highlighting the real people who benefit from reduced-risk nicotine products.

The GFN has long been a leading platform for harm reduction discussions, and this new addition reinforces its commitment to public engagement.

THE RISE OF Pouches

A King’s College London study has revealed a sharp increase in nicotine pouch use across the UK, highlighting a shift toward smokeless alternatives. Researchers found that pouches are gaining popularity among ex-smokers and social nicotine users seeking a discreet, smoke-free option. While concerns about youth access persist, advocates argue that regulated nicotine pouches provide an additional harm reduction tool. The findings suggest that the modern nicotine market is evolving rapidly, with consumers increasingly exploring non-combustible alternatives.

FDA’S Acknowledgment

A landmark Supreme Court case in the US has revealed a crucial stance by the FDA: the agency officially acknowledged that vaping could save lives by offering a significantly less harmful alternative to smoking. The admission was made in legal proceedings examining the FDA’s approach to vaping regulation. Harm reduction advocates have welcomed the statement as a long-overdue recognition of the scientific consensus that vaping is far safer than smoking.

JUNE’S DISPOSABLE Ban

The UK government has confirmed that disposable vapes will be banned from 1st June 2025, in a move designed to address environmental concerns and youth uptake. The decision follows months of debate over the sustainability and accessibility of disposable vaping products. While the ban has received mixed reactions, industry leaders are urging policymakers to ensure that adult smokers are still supported with alternative harm reduction options.

FOUR IN TEN

A survey by Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) has found that 39 percent of UK smokers wrongly believe vaping is as harmful (or more harmful) than smoking. Experts warn that

this misinformation could prevent smokers from switching to safer alternatives. The study highlights the urgent need for public education campaigns to correct misconceptions and reinforce the well-established evidence that vaping poses a fraction of the risks of smoking.

A Turning Point

New research shows that e-cigarettes are reshaping global smoking trends, with more smokers than ever successfully transitioning to vaping. The study highlights that countries with supportive harm reduction policies are seeing the fastest declines in smoking rates. Advocates argue that governments should take note of this real-world data and avoid knee-jerk reactions against vaping. The findings reinforce the idea that embracing tobacco harm reduction could help accelerate progress toward a world with fewer smoking-related deaths.

DRIVING Down SMOKING RATES

A Global State of Tobacco Harm Reduction report has confirmed that vaping is playing a pivotal role in reducing smoking rates worldwide. The number of vapers has doubled from 58 million in 2018 to 114 million in 2023, significantly cutting cigarette consumption. Despite regulatory crackdowns in some countries, the data suggests that consumer-driven harm reduction is making a measurable impact on public health.

OZ POUCH

Crackdown

The Australian Medical Association (AMA) in South Australia has endorsed the government’s crackdown on nicotine pouches. AMA SA President Dr. John Williams expressed concerns over the unregulated nature of these products, highlighting unknown nicotine levels and potential hidden chemicals. He praised Health Minister Chris Picton for decisive action against these products…this stance contrasts with Sweden’s success in reducing smoking rates through alternative nicotine products like pouches. International research suggests pouches are less harmful than cigarettes, offering a safer alternative for smokers.

‘SMOKEFREE GENERATION’

The UK’s Tobacco and Vapes Bill has introduced plans to create a ‘Smokefree Generation’ by banning cigarette sales to anyone born after 1st January 2009. The legislation aims to phase out smoking over time while strengthening regulations on vaping to prevent youth uptake. While some health groups have praised the move, others warn that overregulation of vaping could hinder harm reduction efforts.

The bill’s impact will depend on how it balances youth prevention with support for adult smokers seeking alternatives.

VAPING GATEWAY

Debunked

Researchers at the University of Massachusetts Amherst have found that evidence supporting vaping as a gateway to smoking in youth is of very low quality. Assistant Professor Jamie Hartmann-Boyce, senior author of the study published in Addiction, noted that some data suggests vaping may contribute to declines in youth smoking, particularly in the U.S. The team reviewed 123 studies involving over 4 million participants under 29 in the U.S., Canada, and Western Europe. They concluded that more research is needed to establish any causal links between vaping and subsequent smoking.

OVERTAKES VAPING OVERTAKES TOBACCO

new study from the University of Edinburgh has revealed that convenience stores in the UK are seeing four times more profit from vaping products than traditional cigarettes.

This surge in profitability highlights a significant shift in retail trends, as smoking rates continue to decline and harmreduction alternatives gain ground.

Retailers are embracing this change, recognising that e-cigarettes are driving both sales and increased customer engagement.

The study underscores how vaping has reshaped the retail landscape, particularly for convenience stores that have traditionally depended on cigarette sales for revenue.

With stricter health regulations and higher taxes limiting tobacco profits, many shop owners are discovering that diversifying their inventory with vape

products is both a lucrative and forwardthinking strategy.

By aligning their business models with public health initiatives, retailers can meet evolving consumer demands while maintaining financial stability.

Advocates of harm reduction have welcomed the move away from tobacco, citing the increased accessibility of safer alternatives as a win for both retailers and public health.

The growing popularity of vaping among smokers looking to quit is evident in sales trends.

“Tobacco is yesterday’s product. The decline in sales is great for the nation’s health, and it’s a win for stores too,” noted one industry insider, emphasising the dual benefits.

Data from the study also shows a rise in health-conscious behaviours among consumers, driving demand for alternatives that significantly reduce exposure to harmful chemicals.

Vaping offers these consumers a safer and more tailored experience, with an array of flavours and device types designed to meet individual needs.

In response to this shift, retailers have expanded their vape offerings and invested in staff training to guide customers transitioning from smoking.

These efforts have contributed to a surge in revenue for stores that have adapted to the changing market.

However, experts caution that retailers must stay agile in light of upcoming regulations, including potential restrictions on disposable vapes and further advertising limits.

Despite these potential hurdles, the profitability of vaping products compared to cigarettes shows no signs of slowing.

With smoking rates at record lows, vaping’s role in supporting smokers on their quit journey continues to strengthen its position as a cornerstone of modern harm-reduction strategies.

A WINS A ZYN

FDA authorises ZYN nicotine pouches, marking a milestone in tobacco harm reduction

Words: Oliver Smith

In a landmark decision, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has authorised the sale and marketing of 20 ZYN nicotine pouch products, following an extensive scientifi c review.

This marks the first instance of nicotine pouches receiving approval through the premarket tobacco product application (PMTA) pathway.

The FDA’s evaluation concluded that ZYN pouches contain substantially lower levels of harmful constituents

compared to cigarettes and most smokeless tobacco products, such as moist snuff and snus.

Consequently, these authorised products pose a lower risk of cancer and other serious health conditions.

The agency also considered evidence indicating that a significant proportion of adults who use cigarettes and/or smokeless tobacco products have completely switched to these nicotine pouches.

Matthew Farrelly, director of the Office of Science in the FDA’s Centre for Tobacco Products, stated, “To receive marketing authorisations, the FDA must have sufficient evidence that the new

products offer greater benefits to population health than risks.

“In this case, the data show that these nicotine pouch products meet that bar by benefiting adults who use cigarettes and/or smokeless tobacco products and completely switch to these products.”

Despite the FDA’s endorsement, some public health organisations have expressed concerns.

The American Lung Association (ALA) voiced disappointment, highlighting apprehensions about potential youth uptake.

However, Brian King, director of the FDA’s Centre for Tobacco Products, emphasised the

importance of responsible marketing to prevent youth use.

He noted, “While current data show that youth use remains low, the FDA is closely monitoring the marketplace and is committed to taking action, as appropriate, to best protect public health.”

This authorisation signifies a pivotal moment in tobacco harm reduction efforts, offering adult smokers a less harmful alternative to traditional tobacco products.

As the landscape of nicotine consumption evolves, the FDA’s decision underscores the potential for innovative products to contribute to public health objectives.

These nicotine pouch products meet that bar by benefiting adults who use cigarettes and/or smokeless tobacco products and completely switch to these products.

COUNTDOWN TO SMOKEFREE

With just five years remaining until the UK’s 2030 smoke-free target, a new report highlights regions lagging behind and the critical role vaping plays in harm reduction

WE’RE AT A CRITICAL CROSSROADS. POLICIES NEED TO SUPPORT HARM REDUCTION TOOLS, NOT RESTRICT THEM

The UK has just five years remaining to reach its goal of becoming a smoke-free nation by 2030.

However, new data from a leading e-cigarette company suggests that many regions are falling behind in meeting this ambitious target.

The analysis identifies key areas that are on track to hit the goal, while others face significant challenges unless swift and targeted action is taken.

The government’s smoke-free initiative aims to reduce smoking prevalence to below 5 percent of the population by 2030.

However, experts have raised concerns that restrictive policies on vaping products could slow progress.

Harm-reduction strategies, including the promotion of vaping as an alternative to smoking, have been instrumental in driving down smoking rates.

“We’re at a critical crossroads,” noted a public health advocate. “Policies need to support harm reduction tools, not restrict them.”

Regions that have integrated harmreduction measures, such as greater access to vaping products and

educational initiatives, have experienced notable declines in smoking rates.

Conversely, areas with limited access to alternatives or higher rates of smokingrelated poverty are struggling to make headway.

Many public health experts agree that education and improved access to safer alternatives are essential for achieving the smoke-free target.

Efforts to incorporate vaping into broader public health strategies are underway, particularly in communities with historically high smoking rates.

However, these efforts face opposition from groups pushing for stricter regulations, including flavour bans and increased marketing restrictions.

Health organisations are urging policymakers to strike a balance between protecting youth and ensuring that adults have access to effective quitting aids.

Without this balance, experts warn, the smoke-free target could become increasingly difficult to reach within the next five years.

The clock is ticking, and decisions made now will shape the nation’s ability to meet its public health commitments.

YOU SNUS YOU LOSE YOU LOSE YOU LOSE

Consumer-led harm reduction helps Norway achieve record-low smoking rates

nicotine revolution is taking place in Norway, where snus—a smokeless tobacco product—is steadily replacing cigarettes.

Over the past two decades, smoking rates have nosedived from 25 percent of the adult population in 2005 to just 7 percent today.

Among young adults aged 16-24, the change is even more drastic, with only 3 percent smoking daily, while 16 percent now regularly use snus.

This shift mirrors Sweden’s success, where snus has long been a cornerstone of tobacco harm reduction.

Sweden boasts some of the lowest rates of smoking-related illnesses, a feat often attributed to its widespread adoption of smokeless nicotine products.

NORWAY’S PLUMMETING SMOKING RATES ARE DUE TO WIDESPREAD SUBSTITUTION OF DEADLY COMBUSTIBLE CIGARETTES FOR MUCH SAFER SNUS.

In both countries, this trend is driven by consumers opting for reduced-risk alternatives, despite minimal official support from public health agencies.

“Consumers are leading this change by choosing reduced-risk products independently,” said MacKintosh.

“Despite minimal endorsement from public health authorities, snus is driving a transformation in how nicotine is consumed, helping reduce tobacco-related harm.”

Unlike traditional cigarettes, snus delivers nicotine without combustion, removing many of the carcinogens and toxins responsible for tobaccorelated diseases.

Research from organisations like GSTHR highlights that smokeless nicotine products significantly reduce the risk of illnesses associated with smoking, including lung cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Norwegian authorities, however, remain hesitant to actively promote snus use…critics argue that this caution reflects a reluctance to fully embrace harm reduction strategies, which often face resistance due to lingering stigma around any nicotine product.

Yet, Norway’s declining smoking rates provide a powerful case study in how safer alternatives can drive public health improvements.

With smoking now at historic lows, the country continues to move closer to a smoke-free future.

Experts believe this success may encourage other nations to rethink their approach to harm reduction, paving the way for broader acceptance of smokeless alternatives.

DEFRA COMES TO THE RESCUE

A new plain-English guidance from DEFRA outlines how retailers and consumers should prepare for the singleuse vape ban taking effect on 1 June 2025

Words: Oliver Smith

The Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) has issued new guidance to help retailers and consumers navigate the upcoming ban on single-use vapes.

Effective from 1 June 2025, the legislation will prohibit the sale of disposable vaping devices across the UK in a bid to reduce waste and promote sustainability.

The guidance, written in accessible language, outlines essential compliance measures for retailers.

These include selling through current disposable stock before the deadline and sourcing compliant alternatives, such as refillable or rechargeable devices.

Retailers are also instructed to collaborate with registered waste services to ensure the responsible disposal of unsold inventory.

“This ban is a major step towards sustainability,” a DEFRA representative stated, “We want to make sure that businesses understand their obligations and have time to adapt.”

The document provides additional advice for consumers who currently use disposable vapes, encouraging them to transition to more sustainable options.

Many vape shop owners are already preparing for the shift by expanding their range of compliant products and educating customers on the long-term benefits of refillable devices.

While some industry stakeholders have expressed concerns about the potential impact on consumer convenience, others view the ban as an opportunity to promote innovation and sustainability.

Retailers who act early to adapt their product offerings are expected to gain a competitive edge, particularly as demand for eco-friendly vaping solutions increases.

With clear guidelines now in place, both retailers and consumers can make informed choices as the industry moves toward a more sustainable future.

THIS BAN IS A MAJOR STEP TOWARDS SUSTAINABILITY. WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT BUSINESSES UNDERSTAND THEIR OBLIGATIONS AND HAVE TIME TO ADAPT.

A new survey finds that 92 percent of Spanish vapers use flavours, with 87 percent stating they are essential for quitting smoking.

Words: Oliver Smith

new survey conducted by the World Vapers’ Alliance (WVA) has highlighted the critical role of flavoured e-liquids in helping Spanish smokers quit cigarettes.

The study, carried out by independent pollster Dynata, found that 92 percent of Spanish vapers use flavours other than tobacco, while 87 percent believe they are essential in reducing or quitting smoking.

The research, which surveyed 585 Spanish vapers, further revealed that 92.1 percent were former smokers, with many switching to vaping to cut down on cigarette use (50.4 percent), quit entirely (23.9 percent), or find a less harmful nicotine alternative (39.8 percent).

Significantly, 67 percent of ex-smokers said flavours helped them reduce their cigarette intake, while 14 percent credited flavours with helping them quit smoking completely.

With the Spanish Ministry of Health considering a ban on flavoured vape liquids, the WVA has warned that such restrictions could undermine public health efforts.

The findings suggest that outlawing flavours could drive vapers back to cigarettes, with 50 percent of respondents admitting they might return to smoking or turn to illicit sources for flavoured products.

Alberto Gómez Hernández, Policy Manager at the WVA, criticised the proposed flavour ban, arguing that it would push ex-smokers back toward combustible tobacco rather than support harm reduction.

“Flavours are a crucial tool for adult smokers looking to quit,” he said.

“Eliminating them would make it harder for thousands of Spanish vapers to stay away from cigarettes and for millions of smokers to quit in the future.”

Despite extensive global evidence supporting vaping as a less harmful alternative to smoking, the WVA fears Spain is following in the footsteps of other European nations that have introduced strict vaping regulations without fully considering their consequences.

The organisation is now calling on policymakers to prioritise harm reduction over restrictive measures, warning that banning flavours risks reversing progress in smoking cessation and fuelling the black market for vape products.

THE RISE OF BIG PUFF THE RISE OF BIG PUFF

A new report from Material Focus highlights the environmental and regulatory challenges posed by the rapid rise of high-capacity disposable vapes, often referred to as ‘big puff’ devices.

Words: Oliver Smith

The growing trend of high-capacity disposable vapes, often marketed as ‘big puff’ devices, has triggered fresh concerns over compliance and sustainability in the vaping sector.

According to the latest report from Material Focus, these devices, capable of delivering up to 10,000 puffs, are not only straining recycling systems but also breaching multiple regulations.

The report reveals that many of these devices fail to meet UK safety and recycling standards, often bypassing the cap on nicotine strength and e-liquid volume, which is limited to 2ml for disposables under current legislation.

Moreover, their non-compliant design presents significant challenges for responsible disposal and recycling efforts.

Environmental experts have pointed out the strain these high-capacity products place on waste management.

“These devices are flooding the market and increasing the volume of improperly disposed lithium batteries and plastics.” a Material Focus spokesperson explained.

With vaping today, a major part of harmreduction strategies, authorities are under pressure to strike a balance between regulating non-compliant products and supporting legitimate retailers.

Retailers have expressed concerns about the influx of these devices, fearing that non-compliant competitors could undermine their compliance efforts.

Many reputable vape shops are now doubling down on ensuring their product lines meet regulatory standards, including proper labelling and waste disposal measures.

“We’re committed to offering safe, compliant products that align with harmreduction goals, but these rogue devices make that harder,” one retailer noted.

Material Focus is calling for stronger enforcement measures to prevent the sale of non-compliant ‘big puff’ devices.

These devices are FLooding the market and increasing the volume of improperly disposed lithium batteries and plastics.

The report also emphasises the importance of educating consumers on the risks posed by such products and the benefits of switching to regulated, refillable alternatives.

As the market continues to evolve, industry stakeholders agree that sustainable and compliant innovation must remain a top priority.

Addressing the challenges posed by these high-capacity disposables will require collaboration between manufacturers, retailers, and regulators to ensure both environmental responsibility and public safety.

DISPOSABLE VAPE BANS SPREAD ACROSS EUROPE AS REGULATIONS TIGHTEN

WORDS: OLIVER SMITH

BANS GRIP EUROPE

EUROPE IS SEEING A MAJOR SHIFT IN HOW DISPOSABLE E-CIGARETTES ARE REGULATED, WITH MULTIPLE COUNTRIES

TAKING STEPS TO RESTRICT OR BAN THEM ALTOGETHER.

Concerns over their environmental impact and the rise in youth vaping have driven these decisions, marking a significant moment for the industry and those who rely on vaping as a harm reduction tool.

Belgium was the first European country to introduce a full ban, with the law coming into effect on 1 January 2025.

The government had previously attempted a ban in 2021 but faced regulatory obstacles that delayed its implementation.

Now, with growing concerns over the amount of waste produced by single-use vapes, the country has taken decisive action.

Officials also pointed to the rapid increase in youth vaping, arguing that disposables make the habit too accessible and appealing to younger audiences.

France quickly followed Belgium’s lead, securing European Commission approval in late 2024 to push ahead with its own ban on disposable vapes.

Lawmakers debated the health and environmental consequences of these products before moving forward with stricter regulations.

Although the final legislative steps are still in progress, the French government’s position is clear…disposable vapes represent a growing issue that needs immediate action.

Ireland is also preparing to introduce new restrictions, with Health Minister Stephen Donnelly gaining Cabinet approval to ban both flavoured and disposable vapes.

The government has emphasised that the move is intended to reduce the number of underage vapers while tackling the environmental impact of single-use products.

With broad support across Ireland’s coalition government, the ban is expected to pass without major resistance.

With three European countries moving to outlaw disposables, there is now speculation about whether a wider ban could be introduced at an EU level.

Some policymakers are calling for harmonised regulations, including stricter recycling requirements and clearer labelling, while others argue for an outright ban to prevent young people from taking up vaping.

Although a Europe-wide restriction is not yet in place, the direction of travel suggests that disposable vapes could soon face even tighter regulations across the continent.

The industry has already begun to react, with some manufacturers investing in alternative solutions, including biodegradable materials and enhanced recycling programmes.

Others are pivoting towards refillable or reusable devices to ensure compliance with emerging restrictions. As regulation tightens, brands are being forced to rethink their approach in order to maintain their presence in the market.

Governments across Europe are now facing the challenge of enforcing these bans while balancing public health concerns and consumer behaviour.

While proponents argue that tougher regulations will help curb youth vaping and reduce waste, there are also fears that bans could drive demand towards unregulated markets, potentially increasing health risks for consumers.

Striking the right balance remains a critical challenge for policymakers as they attempt to shape the future of vaping in Europe.

THE TO SAFE VAPING

Adhering to regulations ensures vaping products meet safety standards, protect consumers, and maintain credibility within the industry

Words: Oliver Smith

IN AN INCREASINGLY REGULATED MARKET, COMPLIANCE IS THE BACKBONE OF THE VAPING INDUSTRY… FROM PRODUCT SAFETY CERTIFICATIONS TO MARKETING RESTRICTIONS, REGULATORY FRAMEWORKS

PLAY A

CRUCIAL ROLE IN MAINTAINING TRUST BETWEEN CONSUMERS, RETAILERS, AND MANUFACTURERS.

By adhering to these standards, reputable brands not only protect their customers but also differentiate themselves from non-compliant competitors.

One of the core pillars of compliance is ensuring that vaping products meet strict safety requirements.

Devices and e-liquids are subject to detailed testing for chemical composition, battery integrity, and nicotine content.

For example, under the Tobacco and Related Products Regulations (TRPR), disposable vapes must not exceed 2ml of e-liquid or 20mg of nicotine strength. These measures are designed to minimise risk while promoting harm reduction.

Retailers play a key role in upholding compliance by sourcing products that meet regulatory requirements.

Many have implemented age-verification policies, such as Challenge 25, to prevent underage sales.

Additionally, digital solutions like QR-code-enabled product information menus are becoming more common, providing customers with access to detailed descriptions, lab results, and safety data.

Compliance also extends to responsible marketing practices…advertising restrictions are in place to prevent the promotion of vaping to youth while still allowing adults to access information on harmreduction tools.

These guidelines ensure that brands can communicate effectively with their target audience without crossing ethical or legal boundaries.

Waste management is another critical aspect, as sustainability becomes a focal point for regulators, compliant manufacturers and retailers are partnering with authorised recycling services to properly dispose

of used devices and noncompliant products.

This helps the industry stay ahead of environmental challenges while adhering to the latest legislation.

By prioritising compliance, the vaping industry can continue to offer safe, reliable products that help smokers transition to less harmful alternatives.

As new regulations emerge, collaboration between manufacturers, retailers, and policymakers will be key to maintaining both public trust and the industry’s longterm viability.

VAPE

From AI-driven personalisation to precision heating and next-generation sustainability, innovation is transforming vaping into a safer, smarter, and more efficient experience.

Words: Oliver Smith

he vaping industry has always been built on innovation, with technological advancements driving the sector forward and reshaping how consumers experience nicotine.

As regulatory landscapes shift and consumer demands evolve, brands are investing heavily in cutting-edge technology to improve device performance, enhance safety, and create more sustainable alternatives to traditional disposables.

One of the most significant advancements in recent years has been precisionengineered heating technology, which ensures a consistent vaping experience while reducing harmful byproducts.

Features such as temperature control, antiburn chipsets, and smart airflow regulation have helped refine vapour quality and efficiency, allowing devices to deliver nicotine more smoothly while preventing overheating.

These innovations not only improve the user experience but also contribute to greater product longevity, helping to counter concerns about waste and sustainability.

As governments worldwide continue to tighten regulations, many brands are developing refillable, reusable, and modular devices that offer a long-term alternative to disposable vapes.

The rise of intelligent pod systems—which allow for interchangeable coils, refillable e-liquid chambers, and replaceable atomizers— is changing the way consumers approach vaping.

This shift aligns with growing sustainability efforts while also ensuring that vapers have greater control over their experience, from nicotine strength to flavour selection.

Artificial intelligence is also beginning to play a role in the industry, with brands introducing AI-powered

diagnostics and personalisation features.

Some next-generation devices now include smart sensors that track vaping habits, allowing users to monitor their nicotine intake and adjust settings accordingly.

These advancements aim to support smokers looking to transition away from cigarettes by offering tailored recommendations based on usage patterns.

In addition to enhancing the consumer experience, technology is playing a crucial role in improving compliance and product safety.

Advanced traceability systems using QR codes, NFC chips, and blockchain technology are now being integrated into vaping products to provide instant verification of authenticity.

These developments help combat the rise of counterfeit devices while ensuring that consumers have access to compliant and regulated products.

As the industry moves into a new era of regulation and scrutiny, technological advancements are proving to be more than just a means of innovation—they are becoming essential for the survival and evolution of the sector.

Whether through improved safety features, sustainabilitydriven designs, or AI-driven personalisation, technology continues to define what the future of vaping will look like.

With continued investment in research and development, brands are ensuring that vaping remains a viable, regulated, and forward-thinking alternative in the years to come.

Looking ahead to 2025

With the disposables ban around the corner and misinformation about vaping rife, the annual UKVIA vape awareness campaign is more relevant than ever.

“I am always delighted when former smokers come up to me and tell me that our annual VApril campaign led to them giving up cigarettes.”

We are in the eighth year of our annual UKVIA VApril vape awareness campaign and it is now more important than ever as public misperceptions about the relative harms of smoking and vaping are at an all-time high.

VApril plays a huge role in helping adult smokers begin their journey to a smokefree future and I am always delighted when former smokers come up to me and tell me that our annual campaign led to them giving up cigarettes.

I want to pay tribute to our members and the wider vape retail sector who get behind VApril every year and really go the extra mile to help smokers realise the many benefits that switching to vaping can bring.

This year, with the single-use vapes ban kicking in from June, we are naturally focusing on multipleuse devices and encouraging smokers to switch to these.

Disposables have become the vape of choice of so many smokers as they quit cigarettes but there are many alternatives out there and retailers are increasingly reducing their single-use offerings as the ban moves ever closer.

Many devices on the market offer the same convenience as disposables, are just as easy to use but have the added advantages that they are better for the environment and cost less to the consumer over the long term

With the environment very much in mind, this year VApril will also provide information to consumers on how to dispose of their used devices responsibly and this is something we all need to take seriously.

Disinformation and misinformation about vaping –especially those mainstream media reports which wrongly claim that

nicotine vaping is dangerous and responsible for serious health harms and deaths – are doing our industry untold damage.

Even worse, they are very much responsible for the fact that more than half of smokers now believe that vaping is at least as harmful, if not more harmful than cigarettes which claim more than 220 UK lives each year.

VApril is a month-long campaign where the industry and retail sector come together to help combat this misperception and let smokers know that vaping poses just a small fraction of the risks of smoking.

VApril was set up to cut through the disinformation and confusion about risk perception in order to give smokers the best possible help to move to vaping as part of their smoke-free journey. It has remained true to this cause and will continue to do so.

Among

the activities planned for VApril 2025 are promotions designed to:

Educate smokers on how to quit through vaping – concentrating on reusable devices

Make smokers aware how they can tell the difference between legal and illegal vapes, including how to report rogue retailers who flout the law and

Inform consumers on how best to responsibly dispose of their used vape devices.

We urge the retail sector to take full advantage of VApril and to encourage their customers to visit the VApril.org website where they can find all the information they need to help them switch.

For retailers want to know more about how they can get involved in VApril 2025, they can contact ukvia@ jbp.co.uk to obtain further information and advice.

a british solution to the future of vaping

Unlike many vaping brands that operate internationally, Refilla is a British brand through and through— designed, developed and distributed in the UK with full adherence to domestic regulations. as the uk grapples with looming vape restrictions and increasing regulatory scrutiny, consumers are looking for homegrown solutions that align with both compliance and convenience.

In a market shifting towards sustainability and long-term usability, Refilla has emerged as a key player, offering vapers a future-proof solution in the form of the Refilla Pod.

Refilla isn t just designed for today s market… it s built for a future beyond disposables, aligning with the spirit of the upcoming ban while offering a more responsible vaping solution.

At a time when uncertainty surrounds the future of vaping, having a homegrown, compliant alternative has never been more important.

At a time when single-use disposables face mounting pressure, the Refilla Pod provides an alternative that balances reliability, innovation and reduced environmental impact.

With a combination of a reusable, refillable pod, a smart charging dock and Bar Works nicotine salts, this UKdesigned system delivers an adaptable and compliant option as the landscape of vaping continues to shift.

Unlike traditional refillable devices, the Refilla Pod stands out with a fully removable atomizer, something not seen among competitors.

This innovation allows users to replace the atomizer rather than dispose of the entire pod, making the device more cost-effective, environmentally friendly and longer-lasting.

Refilla has also integrated ProFlow technology, an advanced antiburn chip system that eliminates harmful carbonyl compounds while maintaining consistent vapour production

and flavour integrity.

Traditional vaping devices can suffer from fluctuations in vapour output, leading to inconsistent performance over time.

ProFlow chip technology solves this by ensuring that every inhale remains smooth and even. Additionally, it prevents overheating, meaning users can vape with confidence, knowing their device will maintain performance from the first puff to the last.

Another key feature of ProFlow is its ability to eliminate harmful byproducts, ensuring vapour remains completely free from formaldehyde and acetaldehyde, two compounds linked to poorquality vapour production.

With the government tightening restrictions on vaping, including potential bans on disposable devices, the focus has turned towards sustainable alternatives.

Refilla is a British brand, meaning consumers can trust that it adheres to UK compliance standards while also anticipating the future direction of regulations.

Unlike disposables, which contribute to waste concerns and are under heavy scrutiny, the Refilla Pod is designed for long-term use, offering vapers a way to stay ahead of impending restrictions

without sacrificing the convenience they’ve come to expect.

With a system that allows for quick refilling and recharging, it presents an option that fits into the UK’s evolving vaping framework.

The Refilla Pod offers a next-generation system that provides an efficient and user-friendly vaping experience.

At its core is the Refilla Pod device, a sleek, reusable system designed for longterm use. It maintains the compact feel of disposables but allows vapers to move away from single-use waste in favour of a more sustainable approach.

The accompanying smart docking station allows users to refill and recharge in minutes, streamlining the experience while reducing battery and e-liquid waste.

Completing the kit is the Bar Works range of nicotine salts, formulated to deliver a smooth and satisfying hit, with a variety of popular flavours and different nicotine strengths to cater to all preferences.

Refilla isn’t just designed for today’s market…it’s built for a future beyond disposables, aligning with the spirit of the upcoming ban while offering a more responsible vaping solution.

The brand is also fasttracking the launch of its next-generation system, Refilla Pod, set to arrive this summer.

Designed to navigate potential disposable bans, Refilla Pod combines the

simplicity of pod-based systems with superior vapour production, improved value, and a focus on sustainability. Featuring a removable, replaceable, refillable, and reusable pod, it lasts 16 times longer than any other on the market and is fully compatible with the current Refilla docking system, ensuring a seamless transition for users.

With the vape industry facing constant shifts in policy, there has never been a more critical time to consider buying British.

Not only does it ensure that products meet UK safety standards, but it also helps support an industry that is adapting to the regulatory landscape.

British brands like Refilla are well-positioned to navigate legal changes, offering vapers reliable options that keep them ahead of impending restrictions.

As discussions around flavour bans, nicotine caps and disposable vape legislation continue, having a trusted UK-based alternative provides a sense of security for consumers.

With a system that allows for quick refilling and recharging, it presents an option that fits into the UK s evolving vaping framework.

VAPING BY NUMBERS

With smoking rates falling in key markets, the data continues to support vaping as a harm reduction tool, challenging misconceptions and reinforcing its role in helping smokers quit for good.

THE NUMBERS

DON’T LIE- WHERE VAPING IS WIDELY AVAILABLE, SMOKING RATES CONTINUE TO DECLINE

he debate around vaping’s effectiveness as a smoking cessation tool has been ongoing for years, yet the numbers consistently tell the same story…vaping is helping millions of smokers quit traditional cigarettes.

As policymakers and public health bodies wrestle with regulation, the data behind smoking trends provides clear evidence that vaping is playing a pivotal role in reducing smoking rates worldwide.

In the UK, smoking prevalence has been steadily declining for over a decade, and vaping has become the most popular quitting method among adults.

Data from Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) shows that over 4.7 million adults in

Britain are vapers, with the vast majority being former smokers who have successfully switched.

A study by Public Health England (now the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities) found that vaping is twice as effective as traditional nicotine replacement therapies such as patches and gum, reinforcing its role in harm reduction efforts.

“The numbers don’t lie—where vaping is widely available, smoking rates continue to decline,” according to recent reports from public health experts.

A similar trend has been observed in the US, where smoking rates have reached historic lows. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), adult smoking prevalence has dropped below 12 percent, the lowest recorded figure.

At the same time, vaping among adult smokers has increased, indicating a clear shift away from combustible tobacco.

While youth vaping remains a focus of regulation, the data shows that the overwhelming majority of adult vapers are either current or former smokers, using the technology as a means to quit.

In countries where vaping has been embraced as a cessation tool, the impact on smoking rates has been particularly striking.

Sweden is on track to becoming the first smoke-free nation in Europe, with smoking rates falling below 5 percent, a milestone largely attributed to alternative nicotine products like snus and vaping.

Norway has seen a dramatic reduction in smoking in recent years, with an increasing number of consumers switching to nicotine pouches and e-cigarettes.

Despite this clear evidence, vaping continues to face regulatory hurdles and misinformation, often overshadowing its real-world impact on smoking cessation.

While some governments push for stricter controls or outright bans, the data continues to reinforce the reality…vaping is a key tool in reducing smoking rates and improving public health outcomes.

With millions of smokers still looking for alternatives, ensuring access to regulated, high-quality vaping products remains crucial in the global fight against tobacco use.

Addiction HABIT VS

Breaking the cycle: Is nicotine use addiction or just a habit?

Nicotine has long been portrayed as a highly addictive substance, often compared to drugs like heroin and cocaine.

owever, new perspectives in tobacco research suggest the picture may not be so black and white.

For many users, nicotine dependency appears to be less about physical addiction and more closely tied to habitual behaviour.

Nicotine itself is a stimulant that can sharpen focus, reduce stress, and improve mood, but the chemical dependency it creates is often overestimated.

Studies have shown that many users struggle not because of physical cravings, but due to deeply ingrained routines— having a cigarette with coffee, vaping to unwind, or during social interactions.

These rituals reinforce the habit, making

it difficult to quit even when the body’s dependency on nicotine fades.

This distinction between addiction and habit is significant when considering harm reduction approaches.

Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) products, such as patches and gum, provide a controlled dose of nicotine but often fail to replicate the behavioural aspect of smoking or vaping.

As a result, these methods have lower success rates unless users also work on breaking habitual triggers.

The situation in Sweden offers a compelling example of how addressing habits rather than demonising nicotine can lead to better outcomes.

Swedish smokers have turned to snus—a smokeless tobacco product—to meet their nicotine needs.

This shift has resulted in some of the lowest smoking-related mortality rates in the world, demonstrating how access to reduced-risk alternatives can help users maintain their routines without the same health consequences.

Critics, however, argue that downplaying nicotine addiction risks undermining public health efforts, particularly for younger users.

Behavioural experts counter that focusing solely on nicotine’s addictive qualities misses the opportunity to address the psychological drivers of tobacco and vape use.

The conversation around nicotine is changing…understanding the interplay between addiction and habit may help pave the way for more practical harm reduction strategies.

By offering products that reduce health risks while acknowledging the role of habits, public health officials and manufacturers alike can provide more effective support to those seeking to quit or reduce their use.

As researchers continue to explore these dynamics, the path to a smoke-free future could lie in breaking cycles of habit—not just addiction.

Understanding the difference between addiction and habit can help shape more effective harm reduction strategies.

John Dunne,

SERIOUS SEIZURES

County experiences over 14,000 percent increase in confiscations, raising public health concerns.

Words: Oliver Smith
ew data has revealed that Essex has seen a 14,000 percent rise in illegal vape seizures over the past year, making it one of the highestranking areas for confiscations in the UK.

The dramatic increase has placed the county just behind London’s Hillingdon Borough, which remains the UK’s top hotspot for illicit vape removals.

Industry experts have pointed to Essex’s proximity to Heathrow Airport as a key reason for the surge, with the illegal market thriving due to gaps in enforcement and the government’s restrictive policies.

A report compiled by Vape Club, based on a Freedom of Information (FOI) request, highlights the staggering scale of illicit vape sales across the UK.

It revealed that in 2024 alone, authorities seized two illegal vapes every minute, adding up to nearly £9 million worth of black-market products.

Since 2020, the number of confiscations has grown more than one hundred times, underlining how rapidly the problem has escalated.

Speaking on the issue, Riot Labs Founder Ben Johnson criticised the government’s current approach, stating that increasing restrictions are only making the problem worse.

He said: “The illegal vape black market is booming due to a lack of enforcement and the Government’s ongoing attempts to use prohibition, which is only fuelling the problem. Prohibition does not work.”

The data also shows a geographical breakdown of illegal vape seizures across the UK, with London accounting for nearly 47 percent of all confiscations in England, with Essex following closely behind.

In Wales, Newport was responsible for 70 percent of all illicit product removals, while in Scotland, Renfrewshire Council—home to Glasgow Airport—recorded the highest number of seizures at 3,814.

These figures suggest that major transport hubs are being exploited as entry points for illegal products, allowing unregulated vapes to flood the UK market.

Industry leaders are calling for a national licensing scheme to help tackle the black market and introduce stricter controls on where and how vaping products are sold.

They argue that the current lack of retailer oversight allows non-compliant products to be widely distributed, ultimately putting both vapers and retailers at risk.

Dan Marchant, CEO of Vape Club, has emphasised the need for regulatory change, warning that without a licensing system, he stressed: “The black market will continue to grow, and legitimate retailers who are trying to operate within the law will suffer.”

The rise of illegal vapes has also raised concerns over consumer awareness. Many buyers may unknowingly purchase unregulated products, believing them to be legitimate.

Experts advise that consumers should check for key indicators of illegal devices, such as excessively large tank sizes, nicotine strengths above 20 milligrams per millilitre, missing health warnings, poor packaging quality, and the absence of UK contact information on the product.

Without a shift in enforcement strategies, there is a possibility that genuine harm reduction efforts could be undermined, pushing vapers back towards either illicit products or, even worse, combustible tobacco.

THE BLACK MARKET WILL CONTINUE TO GROW, AND LEGITIMATE RETAILERS WHO ARE TRYING TO OPERATE WITHIN THE LAW WILL SUFFER.

Designed specifically to work with the Refilla Vape and Refilla Dock

The Refilla kit is made up of three parts that are all needed in order for the process to work: the Refilla vape device, the Refilla charging dock and a 10ml Bar Works e-liquid (which has been specially designed with a cap compatible for refilling via the charging dock). Currently, you have to buy each part separately.

Refilla Vape Design & Performance

Retailing at £9.99, the Refilla vape device is designed for simplicity and ease of use. Shaped like many familiar disposable vapes on the market, this refillable kit is square, compact, and button-less with a built in 500 mAh battery. Just inhale and go – it doesn’t get much similar than that!

The Refilla vape kit offers a really smooth and clean Mouth-To-Lung (MTL) draw with plenty of vapour production on the exhale.

As this kit has been designed for ease and simplicity, there is no option to adjust the airflow, which means you’re limited to a MTL vaping style only. If you’re a smoker looking to quit through vaping, a beginner vaper or just someone who prefers MTL vaping, this kit will hit the spot.

Depending on how often you vape throughout the day, the Refilla should last the majority of the day before you need to recharge it via the charging dock. Recharging to full capacity takes no more than 35 minutes.

Refilla Dock Design & Performance

The Refilla Dock is an impressive piece of kit and I really enjoyed testing it out. It is the most expensive part of kit retailing at £19.99, however the dock should last you a long time before needing to buy a new one, and would save you a lot of money overall compared to buying a new single-use vape each time you run out.

When a Bar Works e-liquid of choice is inserted, the intelligent docking station is able to detect if the vape needs refilling or recharging immediately, and automatically refills the device in approximately two minutes and fully recharges it in about 35 minutes, ensuring the vape is always ready for use.

One of the best bits about the refilling aspect of the Refilla Dock is that is can precisely fill the vape with the exact amount of e-liquid needed – meaning no overfilling or leakages, which so often happens when you try to refill a vape yourself.

I thought the docking station would be bigger than it is, however it’s pretty inconspicuous and would be easy to transport if you need to take it anywhere. Of course, it’s a bit bulkier than your regular USB-C charging cable, however you do get some standout features with the charging dock that make it worthwhile.

Bar Works E-liquids

The Bar Works nicotine salt e-liquids are formulated with a 50/50 VG/PG ratio blend. They deliver a smooth throat hit and come in a variety of flavours to satisfy your taste buds.

Flavours include:

Blue Razz Lemonade

Blue Sour Raspberry

Menthol Ice

Red Grape Ice

Spearmint Ice

Strawberry Banana

Sweet Strawberry

Watermelon Ice

Retailing at around £4.99, the Bar Works 10ml bottles also have an expertly designed cap specially created to work with the Refilla Dock. Unfortunately, you can’t use any other 10ml e-liquid with the Refilla charging dock at present. It would definitely take this product to another level if you could.

Currently, you can get the Bar Work’s e-liquids in 10mg and 20mg nicotine strengths, which provides some choice depending on how strong of a nicotine hit you require.

How To Use The Refilla Kit

Before you start puffing away on your new device, its important to note that the Refilla vape does not contain any liquid when first purchased, so you must fill the vape using the Refilla Dock.

You can try to vape on the device before filling it with e-liquid, but nothing will happen.

The coil won’t fire until it has first been put into the docking station and filled with e-liquid.

Here are a few steps to follow when you first start:

1. Charge the Dock:

Plug a USB cable into the dock’s USB-C port. The Refilla Dock doesn’t come with its own USB-C charging cable, so you will need to either buy one or use one you already have. The LED lights on the dock will illuminate to show it’s receiving power.

2. Fill the Refilla Vape:

After waiting 10 seconds for the green light to appear on the dock, invert the e-liquid bottle and place it in the designated slot. Then, insert the Refilla device into the dock. The vape will automatically fill and shut off when full, typically taking around two minutes.

3. Vape and Recharge:

Use your vape as much as you need throughout the day. If the device needs recharging, place it in the Refilla Dock. A full charge takes about 35 minutes.

Refilla’s Stand Out Features and Technology

An Innovative Refill and Recharge System

One of the standout features of Refilla is its automatic refill and recharge system. The docking station utilises advanced capacitive sensing technology to monitor the e-liquid levels and battery status of the vape device.

This system ensures precise refilling and charging, eliminating the mess and hassle often associated with manual refills and separate charging processes.

Refilla’s ProFlow Technology

At the heart of Refilla’s innovation is its proprietary ProFlow technology.

Unlike many vaporisers that rely solely on power to control heating, ProFlow precisely regulates the temperature to prevent overheating.

This careful temperature control ensures that the e-liquid is heated below 215°C, preventing the formation of harmful compounds such as formaldehyde and acrolein.

Independent laboratory analyses have confirmed that Refilla’s vapour contains undetectable levels of volatile carbonyls and metals, making it a safer choice for vapers.

Environmental and Economic Benefits

Each device is engineered to last as long as 16 disposable vapes, significantly reducing waste from batteries, plastics, and silicone.

This reduction in disposable components not only benefits the environment but also offers cost savings to users.

According to research and testing by Refilla, they estimate potential savings of up to 70 percent compared to regular use of disposable vapes.

As the impending disposable vape ban looms in the UK, this alone makes it a great alternative for those looking to move away from single use vapes.

Conclusion

It’s always a joy to see something new and innovative enter the market, particularly when I get to test it out!

The Refilla kit is a clever set up which has been meticulously thought through from design to implementation.

Everything worked like clockwork, and I had no issues trying to use

the Refilla Vape or recharge and refill using the docking station.

There are a couple of things that I believe would make this kit even more impressive if implemented in the future, such as being able to use any 10ml e-liquid with the charging dock.

However, its overall intuitive design, combined with its environmental focus, makes the Refilla kit a stand out for 2025.

Pros

Refilla Dock is easy to set up and use.

Refilla Vape is lightweight and compact, so easily fits into pockets.

Refillable and rechargeable which dramatically reduces environmental impact.

More cost effective overall than buying disposable vapes.

Safer and cleaner option – you could tell a difference when compared to other devices.

ProFlow technology protects users from overheated vapour.

Refilla Dock’s smart automatic refilling prevents e-liquid overfilling and leaking.

Cons

Have to buy the Refilla Vape, docking station and e-liquids individually. However, Refilla have stated that a ‘Starter Kit’ option will be available soon, which will allow you to buy all the components together for a reduced cost.

Only able to use Bar Works e-liquids with the docking station.

Restricted to MTL as the device has no options for adjusting airflow.

Refilla Vape is fully sealed so you can’t replace the coil. When the vape reaches the end of its life, you will still need to disposed of it and replace with a new one.

GEEKVAPE DIGI PRO POD KIT

Specifications:

Battery Capacity: 2000mAh

Charging: USB C Fast Charge

Screen: 0.96” Interactive Colour Screen

Maximum Output: 40W

Cartridge Capacity: 2ml (TPD)

It’s not often I am left awestruck at a vape, but this is one of those rare times. The Digi Pro, in my opinion, is the ideal set up.

It has a built in battery, is small enough to grasp tightly in your hand and still packs a serious punch, whilst enlisting the help of a diverse power output selection.

A little chunkier than your standard pod system, the Digi Pro still retains a comfortable, ergonomically appealing shape.

Coming in a whole host of colours, this device is understated and incredibly sleek to look at, giving an added layer of elegance and style on top of the incredible performance.

With a huge, full colour display, you can easily check up on all important vaping parameters such as your selected power mode, battery level and coil resistance.

The Digi Pro has a sort of touchscreen/haptic-esque button formation, sitting flush with the device itself.

To me, the bright, colourful and intricately detailed screen gave this kit a funky, futuristic vibe.

The Digi Pro utilises J Series Coils which then fit snugly into the JR Cartridges, leaving very little space for potential juice leaks.

J Series coils come in a variety of resistances, giving users more flexibility when it comes to their personal preferences.

This kit comes with both 0.6ohm and 0.4ohm coil options, and I felt that the 0.4ohm gave the best flavour, throat hit and vapour production. The coils themselves are actually quite chunky and therefore seem to hold up well when it comes to coil longevity, and I’m getting well over 10 days out of them so far.

Although it is recommended to prime coils before using them, I managed to get away with just letting it soak inside the pod for a good 5-10 minutes, with no adverse effects.

Filling the JR Cartridge is dead easy, simply undo the little rubber seal on the side of the tank and insert the nozzle.

The liquid capacity of this cartridge varies by location, TPD countries have 2ml and other areas it will be a whopping 5ml.

GeekVape has carefully developed a revolutionary leak proof design, completely eliminating any danger of sticky eliquid running everywhere.

The majority of the pod is transparent, allowing vapers to easily see how full the cartridge is, and to avoid overfilling.

Throughout my time vaping this device, I did indeed have no leaking and had very minute amounts of condensation build up.

With the choices of coils, the Digi Pro can offer a diverse range of vaping styles, whether that’s using high VG eliquid (bear in mind, high VG eliquids may go through coils a little quicker than thinner liquids), 50/50 juices and any nicotine type or strength.

Just an input - I am using 50/50 20mg nicotine salts, and the flavour is full and satisfyingly warm.

Equipped with an adjustable airflow slider, you can cycle through mouth-to-lung, restricteddirect-to-lung as well as Direct-to-lung, quickly catering for all types of vapers.

I think one of the coolest features of this kit are the three remarkably simple power modes.

First, we have Eco, which gives a modest hit that also helps preserve battery life.

Then comes Smart Mode, where the device matches your wattage based on which coil you are using.

Finally, we have Boost Mode, in which vapour and flavour is greatly enhanced (although you may find that this method burns through the battery quicker than Eco Mode).

The battery life on the Digi Pro is simply incredible, even using ‘Boost Mode’, it lasts me most of the day, and charging it back up again via USB C is a stress free, and vastly speedy process.

One of the handiest features of this kit was almost overlooked as it was tiny and right on the base of the device, but the Digi Pro has a manual lock button.

This sliding switch allows you to lock the device almost entirely, meaning no buttons can be

accidentally pressed, while still being able to inhale via an auto draw function.

In terms of cost, the Digi Pro is right about average when compared to similar set ups, and will come in at about £25-£35.

I think the fusion of style and performance has been expertly matched in the case of the GeekVape Digi Pro, and its wide range of features combine to make a truly impressive device.

I do think it will be ideal for intermediate vapers, as perhaps the external coils and power modes may be a little overwhelming for brand, brand new vapers.

Having said that, the battery life and Smart Mode does kind of make up for the potential, initial confusion.

PROS

Sleek and stylish I love kits with integrated batteries It felt really satisfying to hold

CONS

Although I can appreciate the simple selection of 3 power modes, I personally prefer adjustable wattages.

VAPORESSO ARMOUR GS KIT REVIEW

Specifications:

Dimensions: 126x39x28mm

Pod Capacity: 2ml (TPD)

Battery: External 18650 (not included)

Output Power: 5-80W

Charging Current: DC 5V/2A, Type-C

Display: 0.96” TFT Screen & LED Light

Remarkably similar to the Vaporesso Armour G but slightly larger, the Armour GS comes with the added benefit of using an external 18650 battery.

This upgrade makes the Armour GS as reliable as it is well-crafted. Being just a smidge larger and heavier, the size difference is barely noticeable during use.

It delivers the same satisfying and billowy experience as the G.

Pod mods like this have come an incredibly long way in recent years, evolving to maximise ease of use, reliability, and satisfaction…the Armour GS exemplifies these qualities perfectly.

Visually, the GS is somewhat larger than the G and comes in the same attractive colour options.

Its robust, hard-wearing exterior exudes sturdiness, with a slightly denser weight than its smaller counterpart.

The Armour GS requires an 18650 battery to operate, which can be both an advantage and a disadvantage.

On the plus side, removable batteries let vapers swap out a battery as needed, minimising downtime (provided you have spares).

On the downside, if you only have a single battery, you’ll need to wait for it to charge before using the device again.

In this sense, it can be just as inconvenient as the integrated battery of the Armour G, in my opinion.

However, the best part of using external batteries is their replaceability…as their lifespan deteriorates, you can simply swap them out, whereas built-in battery devices usually have to be discarded once the battery gives up.

Words: Peach Atkinson

Although you can charge the batteries via the device, I recommend using a dedicated battery charger for added safety and faster charging.

Like the Armour G, the GS also offers a wattage range of 5-80W, ensuring a powerful and intense inhale.

This is especially true when paired with the preinstalled 0.15-ohm GTX mesh coil. GTX coils are renowned for their exceptional flavour and vapour production, performing exceptionally well with high VG e-liquids and low-strength nicotine.

I found that the 0.15-ohm coils produced even better flavour than the 0.2-ohm mesh coils used in the Armour G. Using GTX coils offers a true DTL (Direct to Lung) experience.

Thanks to the carefully constructed mesh design, absorbent cotton, and well-placed e-liquid channels, these coils deliver intense flavour, impressive cloud production, and extended longevity.

Both the G and GS use G Series Pods, which have a TPD-compliant capacity of 2ml. Non-TPD regions can enjoy a larger 5ml capacity.

The pods are easy to see through, simple to fill, and virtually leak-proof. The adjustable airflow allows precise customisation to suit individual preferences.

The impeccable build quality of this device is truly next-level. Its tough exterior seamlessly pairs with a user-friendly interface, ensuring a flawless experience.

In terms of cost, I estimate the Armour GS will be priced around the average range for pod mod systems, likely between £30-40.

Its simple yet versatile design makes the Armour GS an excellent choice for beginner to intermediate vapers who prefer low-strength nicotine and enjoy the ability to fine-tune their vaping experience.

Testing both the Armour G and GS was a pleasure. It was refreshing to try kits so sleek and well-designed, both inside and out. I’m excited to see the impact this kit will have in the pod mod industry.

AVOMI CLIQ POD DEVICE

SPECIFICATIONS:

PUFF COUNT:

Approximately 6000 puffs

NICOTINE STRENGTH: 20mg/ml

Lemon & Lime

Starting off strong, this simply delightful fusion of citrusy flavours aims to impress vapers - particularly fans of fruity freshness. To me, the notes of lemon had a satisfying sharpness that was both refreshing and managed to hold my attention without getting sickly. The underlying, but still noticeable level of lime seemed to wrap up the lemon quite nicely. The edgy layer of lime had a strong effervescent feel to it, and it was conveyed concisely when vaping.

The decision to include a subtle sweetness to the overall flavour gave a solid platform to offset the intense sourness offered by the iconic citrus duo that is Lemon & Lime.

Pineapple Ice

Pineapple is the pinnacle of tropical flavours, in my opinion, and this take on the popular profile is expertly crafted. To me, the well rounded notes of pineapple presented as very authentic, and bypassed the artificial feel that many other ‘Pineapple Ice’ disposables seem to offer.

There was a mild sourness to this flavour, which complemented the otherwise sweet taste, making it super easy to vape in the long run. As suggested by its name, there is a decent amount of cooling agent added to this flavour, ensuring maximum freshness and a cold inhale with every puff.

Blueberry Sour Raspberry

My personal favourite, Blueberry Sour Raspberry is full to the brim

with sweet, almost candy-like vibes. I found it to be bright and punchy, with a modest amount of iciness added as an undertone, boosting its already fresh feel.

A slightly softer note of blueberry will be the initial taste when taking a puff, to me it was smooth, mild and incredibly sweet (but not too sweet!). The perfect combination of flavours and modalities has clearly been crafted carefully and I enjoyed vaping this flavour immensely.

Strawberry Ice

A staple within the vape industry since day one, strawberry flavours are a vaper’s bread and butter. With possibly thousands of iterations, there are clearly some good ones as well as some…not so good ones. Howeverfear not!

This take on the classic flavour has been executed flawlessly. Simple, well rounded and whole tasting, the strawberry flavouring used in this vape liquid came across as sweet, solid and had candy-like notes that made it rather nostalgic to vape. With a hefty chunk of cooling agent added, you can expect a cold burst every time you puff. Enjoyable and refreshing, this will be a firm favourite for fruity fans.

Raspberry Blackcurrant

Floral, intense, fruity and extremely well balanced, this flavour will catch the attention of many. The soft notes of raspberry presented as sweetly aromatic and gave off quite a solid platform on which the bolder elements of blackcurrant could flourish.

As indicated, the intensity of the blackcurrant was unmatched and gave vapers a strong and full bodied taste, especially when complemented by the fragrant notes of raspberry. To me, the interesting combination and the careful ratio of raspberry and blackcurrant made for a delicious, satisfying and quite honestly refreshing set of flavours, and I would highly recommend it!
