Taught by experienced artists, our adult art classes provide guidance from a supportive and passionate perspective, surrounded by like-minded lifelong learners. Whether you are a beginner who has never picked up a paint brush or an experienced artist looking for a creative outlet to keep your skills sharp, the gallery has something for you. Registration for Winter Art Classes begins November 15.

Mondays January 9 – March 6 Mixed Media & Collage: 10am - 12:30pm | Varley Art Gallery | Judith Livingston Mixed Media and Collage offers tremendous opportunities for artistic growth and creative exploration. Drawing materials, paints, papers and found objects will be manipulated and/or combined in the creation of a body of work. The principles of composition and design, surface quality, colour and value systems, imagery and concepts will be discussed to guide you in your creative process. Barcode: 292558| Cost: $201.01 Photography - Intermediate*: 7 - 9:30 pm | McKay Art Centre | Phil Shepherd This intermediate photography course is a continuation of the Photography for Beginners course. Students will use the knowledge gained in the introductory course to address specific topics in photography and expand their already existing knowledge. Students will be introduced to the history of photography and its development as an art form. Creative genres such as portraiture, landscape, still - life, creative night photography, documentary and street photography will be discussed in more detail and students will be lead through a series of hands - on exercises and take - home projects to further develop their portfolio. Watercolour Sketch and Paint: 1 - 3:30 pm | Varley Art Gallery | Sarka Buchl-Stephenson This course in drawing and painting is directed towards the absolute beginner. For four weeks, the emphasis is on learning the fundamentals in drawing such as composition, contour, proportion, form and perspective, and four weeks on painting in watercolour through focus on colour theory, mixing colour, brush work and composition. Tuesdays January 17 – March 7 Acrylics - The Basics and Beyond: 7 - 9:30 pm | Varley Art Gallery | TBA Participants will be introduced to unique approaches using acrylic paints, mediums and varnishes. Beginner to experienced painters will enjoy exploring and experimenting with this versatile medium. Whether on paper, canvas or wood, two or three dimensional, realistic or abstract, participants will discover new approaches to self expression. This class could be the springboard to further art studies in painting or design. You will learn to turn a blank page into your personal artistic statement as professional artist Glenn Bernabe teaches you the fundamentals of form, perspective, proportion, contour and composition. Students will use conte, charcoal and ink and be introduced to specific exercises designed to develop drawing skills. Barcode: 292551 | Cost: $201.01 Photography - Beginner: 7 - 9:30 pm | Cornell Community Centre | Phil Shepherd This introductory course by a professional photographer explores photographic techniques, and how you can express yourself through the camera, to share ideas and inner feelings. : Participants will become familiar with composition techniques so your image will get the “wow” factor by investigating how light affects form, colour and composition. This class examines how to choose the right shooting angle and create perspective, how to look at light, and how to best use light and shadow. Wednesdays January 18 – March 8 Acrylics Mediums Exploration: 7 - 9:30pm | Varley Art Gallery | Olivana Tonon Suitable for the beginner to intermediate acrylic artist, come explore and experiment with a variety of gels, mediums and pastes to create highly textural works on canvas. Materials not provided. Please note that there are no withdrawals or transfers within 5 business classes of the first class. Barcode: 292537 | Cost: $201.01 Portrait Intensive: 7 - 9:30pm | Varley Art Gallery |Glenn Bernabe This course is an extension of the Art of the Portrait Beginner Course. The beginner course covered everything you need to know to create portraits and figurative work in pastel and charcoal. This course will now allow you to apply all of those principles within an intensive setting. Using live subjects, extended poses will be used to enable the student to complete finished portraits as in-class exercises. In creating an effective portrait, you will study subject, composition, figure and faces, contrast and value, colour, technique and your own vision through the process of portraiture. Traditional and experimental techniques, colour and value systems, composition and painting styles will be explored through demonstrations, in - class painting and take home assignments. Thursdays January 19 – March 9 Acrylic Painting – Beginner: 10am – 12:30pm | Varley Art Gallery | Andrew Hamilton This course for the novice acrylic painter will introduce students to the unique ‘forgiving’ qualities of acrylic paint and allow them to experiment with a variety of techniques. Start at the very beginning and learn about choosing paints and paintings surfaces and how to makes the most of your paint and brushes as you work. Basic colour theory and colour mixing will be explored as well as creating glazes and textures. Barcode: 292536 | Cost: $201.01 Landscapes for the Avid Painter: 1 - 3:30 pm | Varley Art Gallery | Andrew Hamilton Ideal for the intermediate artist, our professional artist will assist students with the development of techniques that capture the rhythms, colours and moods of landscape painting. Students will also learn how to use line, shape, colour, and texture and explore the principles of composition, balance and perspective. Artists will work primarily in acrylic, although there is the opportunity to work in watercolour or water-soluble oil. Students will be able to work from life and from photographic references. Classes will include visits into the gallery to study and discuss paintings on exhibit. Skills will be developed by creating value studies, sketches and practicing techniques as demonstrated by the instructor. Painting demonstrations are provided and students receive one on one as well as group instruction. Materials not included and will be discussed and recommended on the first day of class.
