About Varley Education Programs Welcome to the Varley Art Gallery of Markham! Located on Historic Main Street Unionville, our gallery spaces feature historical and contemporary art by regional and national artists with a special focus on the art of Frederick Horsman Varley (1881-1969), a founding member of the Group of Seven. We offer a variety of programs that extend the learning experience beyond your classroom through site-specific arts education. Inspired by our exhibitions, these programs change seasonally, making every visit different! These programs are designed to complement and enhance the Ontario Curriculum for Visual Arts, Language Arts, Social Studies and Geography, which stimulate students to observe, interpret, describe, connect and create. Available to all grade levels, Varley Education Programs include guided cross-curricular tours and indoor/outdoor studio workshops. The Varley Art Gallery offers you two program choices: 1.

Elementary School Studio Workshops ABC is for... Grades K – 8 Students will think about what is important to them and create their own alphabet page to tell the story of a word that they choose. Students will use acrylic paint to add bold colour to their page for a graphic effect. Install-arama Grades K – 3 Inspired by Wafaa Bilal’s 168:01, students will explore the idea of a meanful place (for learning, community interaction), to create a small scale installation artwork. Students will experiment with mixed media, combing drawing and sculpture.
Culture Sculpture Grade 4 – 6 Students will spend the day learning about how art forms can hold various messages to their viewers. Looking at Wafaa Bilal’s work, 168:01, students will be challenged to explore ideas of culture and meaning. Using the elements and principles of design, students will create a fun multi-media sculpture that express feelings and ideas drawn from their own cultures. All materials provided. Printed Opinions Grades 7 – 8 Thinking about social justice and what is important, students will create a small series of posters, while learning traditional printmaking techniques.
Secondary School Studio Workshops Mural Messages Grades 9 – 12 Students will discuss ideas of culture, social justice, and identity, in order to create large murals. Students will use a variety of materials (such as newsprint, paint, pastels, pages from books) to collaboratively create their murals on large canvas.

Creative Classroom Workshops ABCs of Landscape *Varley Classic*
Like the Group of Seven, let’s create colourful artworks inspired by the places we see. Students will create a landscape with a foreground, middle ground and background in either pastels or paint.
3D Landscapes
A fun twist on the 2D landscape, students will work with coloured clay to create 3D worlds.
Laughing Kathy and Friends
Like Varley, we will explore how colours can be used to express emotions and create portraits that tell a story about our personalities in either pastel or paint.
Storyprinting
Inspired by our favourite stories, we will explore narrative illustrations through relief printmaking in this workshop.
School-wide Workshops We are pleased to now offer school-wide workshops! Your entire school can participate in the Varley Education program experience and create a themed school-wide art show. Each class has the choice of completing an individual or collaborative workshop. With each class creating a different masterpiece, the program provides a great opportunity to engage your whole school with the arts and show off your creations in a beautiful culminating art show!* (6 weeks advance notice required)
Individual Art Workshops
Our instructing artist will lead your class through a technical art workshop in the medium of paint, print, or sculpture and each student will create a unique masterpiece.
Collaborative Class Workshops Your class will be led through a project that gets them working to design and create a unique artwork together inspired by the theme of community.
* One-hour consultation with our Education Coordinator regarding art show set-up tips and display options included. Programs can be customized to your school themes upon request.
