Varley Art Gallery of Markham
Director’s Letter This season brings three exciting new exhibitions to the Varley Art Gallery. With two of these, Curator Anik Glaude continues her focus on mark making that was initiated in January. Innovative Spirit: The prints and drawings of Pudlo Pudlat presents images by famed Inuit artist Pudlo Pudlat, whose clean lines and bold colours express a startlingly clear and immediate vision. Pudlat’s deceptively simple forms on white ground communicate powerful conviction and completeness. In contrast, the paintings in Jeff Nye: Recovery Rooms convey a continuously evolving condition. They present a constant, tremulous and potentially unending working-out of ideas, ideas that may never be resolved. Our third exhibition, Rock, Water, Tree: Group of Seven Works in the Jack MacQuarrie Collection, is my first foray into curating at the Varley. Concentrating not on the mark but on the motif, it examines rock, water, tree and other landscape elements that may be combined and recombined with surprisingly varied results. Accompanying these exhibitions will be our popular Gallery Gab and Art Social events – programs that explore and deepen the content of the exhibitions in fun and informal ways. Due to last year’s successful launch of Open Studio, we are pleased to introduce our affordable Life Drawing Drop-in program. Join us for an exciting fall at the Varley Art Gallery.

Exhibitions
Jeff Nye: Recovery Rooms September 24, 2016 - January 8, 2017 Jeff Nye’s paintings are physical explorations of loss and memory; his work reflecting upon the ways in which time and emotion distorts our relationships to the built environment. Each work featured in Recovery Rooms depicts abstracted elements of both domestic and institutional spaces, settings of particular significance to the artist, including homes, workspaces and hospital rooms. Architectural details, such as walls, windows and floorboards seemingly appear and disappear from these canvases, caught somewhere between the remembered past and the physical present. This project is part of right here | right now. Launched in 2014, this initiative aims to foster the work of contemporary artists in York Region by providing them with exhibition opportunities and ongoing professional development.

Rock, Water, Tree: Group of Seven Works in the Jack MacQuarrie Collection September 24, 2016 - January 8, 2017 Drawing on the Jack MacQuarrie Collection, and supplemented by works from the Varley Art Gallery’s permanent holdings, this exhibition explores the recurring compositional building blocks of rock, water, tree, among others. Combined in numerous ways to produce the iconic images of the Group of Seven, they offer a surprising range of mood and meaning.
Innovative Spirit: The prints and drawings of Pudlo Pudlat September 24, 2016 - January 8, 2017 A showcase of works on paper by Inuit artist Pudlot Pudlat (1916-1992) exploring his rich and varied engagement with mark making. As an important figure in the development of drawing in Cape Dorset, Pudlat combined both traditional and modern imagery to depict the changing world around him.
