About Varley Public Programs Welcome to the Varley Art Gallery of Markham! We are located on Historic Main Street Unionville. Our gallery spaces feature historical and contemporary art by regional and national artists with a special focus on the art of Frederick Horsman Varley (1881-1969), a founding member of the Group of Seven. We offer a variety of art programs for ages 4 and up. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced artist, the gallery has something for everyone.

Adapted Services (Ages 7 – 12) Art Therapy- ADHD/ADD VAG | Tuesdays, Apr 3 – May 22 | 4:00 – 5:00 p.m. | Sarah Bedley This course offers children with Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) and Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) a structured and creative environment for artistic expression. Through individual and collaborative art making, children will practice social skills, deepen relationships with others and correct attention and impulsivity issues. Projects emphasize creative thinking and exploration of materials while developing additive and subtractive sculpting techniques, building skills and improvement of coordination. Art Camps Join us at the Varley this summer! The Varley Art Gallery offers fun, educational and enriching summer camps to engage your child’s imagination! Children ages 4-13 will have the opportunity to express how they see the world around them through gallery visits and a variety of art-making activities, using a variety of techniques and media. The experienced and energetic Summer Camp team will lead thoughtfully designed half and full day programs that encourage creative play and individual expression. Pre-Teen and Teen Programs (Ages 8 – 18) Drawing for Pre-Teens Ages 8 – 12 | MAC | Tuesdays, Apr 3 – May 22 | 6 – 8:30 pm | Lisa Fong Express yourself through learning different drawing techniques using a variety of subjects. Explore cartooning, gesture drawing, design, perspective and more with our professional artist. This course can be a great foundation for other art making courses and also a perfect exercise to build up your portfolio or prepare for art school entry exams. No art experience required. Adult Programs (Ages 18+) Mondays Mixed Media & Collage VAG | 10 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. | Mondays, Apr 2 – May 28 | Lori Spendiff Mixed Media and Collage affords tremendous opportunities for artistic growth and creative exploration. Drawing materials, paints, papers and found objects will be manipulated and/or combined in the creation of a body of work. The principles of composition and design, surface quality, colour and value systems, imagery and concepts will be discussed to guide you in your creative process. Barcode: 313381 | Cost: $226.27 Photography – Intermediate* MAC | 7 – 9:30 p.m. | Mondays, Apr 2 – May 28 | Phil Shepherd This intermediate photography course is a continuation of the Photography for Beginners course. Students will use the knowledge gained in the introductory course to address specific topics in photography and expand their already existing knowledge. Students will be introduced to the history of photography and its development as an art form. Creative genres such as portraiture, landscape, still-life, creative night photography, documentary and street photography will be discussed in more detail and students will be lead through a series of hands-on exercises and take-home projects to further develop their portfolio. Students will also be introduced to the creative potential of using an off-camera flash. Each week a new topic will be addressed and the final class will include a portfolio review of each student's work. Students are required to have a digital SLR camera and one lens, as well as the following recommended supplies: camera battery and charger, memory card, access to a computer and photo editing application/software, USB stick and a tripod (if you have one). Tuesdays Acrylics - The Basics and Beyond VAG | 7 – 9:30 p.m. | Tuesdays, Apr 3 – May 22 | Shelly Burke Participants will be introduced to unique approaches using acrylic paints, mediums and varnishes. Beginner to intermediate painters will enjoy exploring and experimenting with this versatile medium. Whether on paper, canvas or wood, two or three dimensional, non-representation or realism, the course will cover colour mixing, brushwork, and more. Wednesdays Watercolour Progression VAG | 1 – 3:30 p.m. | Wednesdays, Apr 4 – May 23 | Lori Spendiff Participants should have a firm working knowledge of basic watercolour techniques and materials and are ready to advance their skills and knowledge of painting in watercolour beyond the beginner level. Traditional and experimental techniques, colour and value systems, composition and painting styles will be explored through demonstrations, in-class painting and homework. Individual attention and class critiques complement the learning process. Advanced Portrait and Figurative Drawing VAG | 7 – 9:30 p.m. | Wednesdays, Apr 4 – May 23 | Glenn Bernabe Portrait is an examination of character. But to be able to portray that effectively there are a number of factors that need to be taken into consideration for a portrait to be successful. This includes an understanding of the human face and figure, composition, light and shadow, drapery and colour. This course will build on those foundations that were learned in the Art of the Portrait, and test your ability to apply them. Using live subjects, extended poses will be used to enable the student to complete finished portraits as in-class exercises. Emphasis will be put on the actual set up of the subject and backdrop as well as the chosen pose. The poses themselves may last for two consecutive classes. This class is for students who have already taken a portraiture or figure drawing and want to hone their abilities of creating finished portraits. No refunds within 5 days of the program. For four weeks, the emphasis is on learning the fundamentals of drawing such as composition, contour, proportion, form and perspective. The last four weeks will be based on sketching and painting with watercolours, with a focus on washes, layering and rendering in pen and ink and studying Varley's field sketches. Students will also learn how to use line, shape, colour, and texture and explore the principles of composition, balance and perspective. Artists will work in acrylic, oil or watercolour, while comparing the contrasting styles and techniques of working with two very different mediums. Suitable for intermediate artists, an experienced art educator will assist students with the development of techniques and approaches that capture the rhythms, colours and moods of landscape painting. Working in acrylic or oil, students will be guided on how to effectively use line, shape, colour, texture, balance and perspective to refine and develop their own personal style. Photography – Beginner VAG | 7 - 9:30 p.m. | Thursdays, Apr 5 – May 24 | Phil Shepherd This introductory course by a professional photographer explores photographic techniques, and how you can express yourself through the camera to share ideas and inner feelings. Participants will become familiar with composition techniques so your image will get the 'wow' factor and you will investigate how light affects form, colour and composition; how to choose the right shooting angle and create perspective; how to look at light; and how to best use light and shadow. Get to know the workings of your digital SLR camera to best utilize this unique instrument so you can capture that moment in time! Fridays Advanced Acrylic Painting VAG | 1 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. | Fridays, Apr 6 – May 25 | Andrew Hamilton This course is a continuation of the acrylic and oil paintings courses offered. Students will build on knowledge gained to further develop their representational and abstract paintings. Go in depth and experiment with mixed media material, gel mediums and use of colour. Students will also learn how to build up a cohesive body of work for art shows/exhibitions. In- class demonstration, discussion and lectures will also be used to facilitate learning. Guided by an experienced art educator, families will be challenged to create an artwork inspired by works in our Permanent Collection. The program is sponsored by Aboveground Art Supplies. PA Day Extravaganza Ages 6 – 12 | VAG | 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. | Cost: $56 Spend your PA Day at an art gallery! The Varley Art Gallery exposes students to some of the best artists in Canada through interactive tours and art activities. Our young artists get their inspiration from the artworks on show and spend the day focusing on their own masterpieces by participating in full-day mixed media workshops - painting, drawing, and sculpture. Life Drawing Drop-in Join us every Thursday from April 19 to May 24 from 7 – 9:30 p.m. for Life Drawing Drop-in sessions in our studio! We offer the opportunity for artists to practice nude drawing and build a social and artistic network by meeting and working amongst their peers. We provide easels, sinks, Wi-Fi, and free admission to the exhibition spaces. Bring your own sketching and drawing materials. Note: The sessions are non-instructional. Artists under the age of 18 must have parental permission to participate in nude life drawing sessions. Fees   
