About Varley Public Programs Welcome to the Varley Art Gallery of Markham! We are located on Historic Main Street Unionville and our gallery spaces feature historical and contemporary art by regional and national artists with a special focus on the art of Frederick Horsman Varley (1881-1969), a founding member of the Group of Seven. We offer a variety of art programs for ages 4 and up, whether you are a beginner or an experienced artist, the gallery has something for everyone.

Registration for residents begin on May 8 and May 9 for non-residents.

Cancellation Policy Multi-session Programs All cancellation requests must be received 5 days prior to the start of the program in order to receive a full credit or refund. Non-Residents Non-residents incur a $10 fee for all programs.

Adult Programs (Ages 18+) Making Tracks VAG | Sundays, Jul 8 – 15 | 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. | Judith Livingston Discover printmaking and start making tracks. Judith Livingston takes students through the process printmaking, paring fun techniques with unusual materials. Stamp, rub and press to create art that tells a story. Inspired by the Varley’s summer exhibitions, this two-day workshop includes a gallery tour, artist’s demonstrations, and exercises to help students apply printmaking techniques to their own practice. Materials not included; Supply list available online. Please note: an additional fee of $10 will be collected on the first day of class for exceptional materials. Barcode: 323921 | Cost: $60.50 Abstracting the Landscape VAG | Sundays, Jul 22 – 29 | 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. | Andrew Sookrah Explore the abstract, graphic presence which exists at the very core of every landscape. Whether beginners wishing to start to develop a style of their own, or an established artist looking to refine their skills, this course will teach artists in their preferred medium, to go beyond the obvious. Examine abstracted shapes, and explore movement, texture and colour through basic drawing techniques, focal point, composition and colour. This workshop includes artists' demonstrations in acrylic, oil and watercolour. Materials not included; supply list available online. Barcode: 324363 | Cost: $60.50 Introduction to Drawing VAG | Thursdays, Aug 9 – 30 | 7:00 – 9:30 p.m. | Glenn Bernabe The perfect class for ones who have always wanted to learn to draw but were afraid to take the plunge. Professional artist Glenn Bernabe teaches you the fundamentals of form, perspective, proportion, contour and composition in this four week class. Students will use conte, charcoal and ink and be introduced to specific exercises designed to develop drawing skills. The class will also include tours of the gallery of our current exhibition, Refuge and Inscapes. Materials not provided. Supply list will be available two weeks prior at varleyartgallery.ca. Art Camps Join us at the Varley this summer! The Varley Art Gallery offers fun, educational and enriching summer camps to engage your child’s imagination! Children ages 4-13 will have the opportunity to express how they see the world around them through gallery visits and a variety of art-making activities, using different techniques and media. The experienced and energetic Summer Camp team will lead thoughtfully designed full half and day programs that encourage creative play and individual expression.
