Varley Art Gallery of Markham

Director’s Letter This summer, inspired by the cosmopolitan nature of the TO2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games, Varley Curator Anik Glaude has focussed on the overarching themes of identity, environment and representation. Selfrepresentation is a central issue of ALMA:The Life and Art of Alma Duncan (closing May 3). Negotiations of cross-cultural identity are foregrounded in our summer show, Traversive Territories, in the work of Sarindar Dhaliwal, Soheila Esfahani and Colette Urban, as well as in our major fall focus on Brendan Fernandes, an artist of Goan heritage, who was born in Kenya and now resides in Canada. The Pan Am/Parapan Am Games create a wonderful opportunity to showcase not just Canadian art, but specifically the rich cultural heritage of Markham. Through the Looking Glass: F.H. Varley in British Columbia offers the work of one of the great names of Canadian art history, Fred Varley, who spent the last 12 years of his life in Unionville, less than a mile from the Atos Markham Pan Am/Parapan Am Centre. A newer generation of local artists is represented by Jennie Suddick whose fall exhibition will reflect themes inspired by her Markham childhood. In Markham, culture thrives. Exhibitions

Traversive Territories May 23 - September 7, 2015 Main Galleries Curated by Corinna Ghaznavi Traversive Territories brings together the works of three artists — Sarindar Dhaliwal, Soheila Esfahani and Colette Urban — who investigate the complex territories of identity, migration and translation. Their work explores what it means to be a global citizen where origins are intertwined with transnational experiences. They weave together the specifics of cultural expressions and aptly address the contemporary experience of multiculturalism. For related programs, please see Events on pages 8 - 9. This exhibition is generously supported by the Canada Council for the Arts.

Through the Looking Glass: F.H. Varley in British Columbia On view until January 10, 2016 Collections Gallery Frederick Horsman Varley (1881 - 1969), a founding member of the Group of Seven, was one of Canada’s foremost portrait painters. The Varley Art Gallery actively collects Varley’s work as well as archival material pertaining to his life and art. In 1926, Varley accepted an appointment at the Vancouver School of Decorative and Applied Arts. He spent the next ten years in the West. Through the Looking Glass explores the rich landscapes of Varley’s British Columbia period; a productive time in his life during which his own individual style flourished.

Last Call for ALMA: The Life and Art of Alma Duncan On view until May 3, 2015 Main Galleries Please note that all Gallery spaces will be closed May 4 - 22 for the installation of Traversive Territories. This exhibition is organized and circulated by the Ottawa Art Gallery, and made possible by generous funding from Canadian Heritage’s Museum Assistance Program.
