Director’s Letter This summer the Varley Art Gallery continues its focus on the theme of mark making, which started in January of this year. On Your Mark II: F. H. Varley, Ed Pien, Kate Wilson brings together drawings from the last century by famed Group of Seven member, Fred Varley, and places them in dialogue with the practice of contemporary artists Kate Wilson and Ed Pien. Wilson often begins to create with small works on paper, which are enlarged before being painted on a gallery wall. In a new departure for Wilson, her images have been digitized and printed out in black vinyl to become large-scale murals. In his drawings and installations, Taiwanese-born Pien, explores aspects of his Chinese heritage among other issues. Pien’s work thus forms a fascinating complement to the Varley’s second major summer exhibition, Visualizing a Culture for Strangers: Chinese Export Paintings from the Nineteenth Century. Organized and circulated by the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, Visualizing a Culture for Strangers presents detailed and colourful images produced by Chinese artists that have been sold to western customers in great numbers. Exported to Britain, North America and elsewhere, these works considerably influenced the western vision of China. Join us this summer for exhibitions and activities that connect the history and heritage of Unionville with the dynamic communities of Markham today.

Exhibitions

Visualizing a Culture for Strangers: Chinese Export Paintings from the Nineteenth Century May 29 - September 6, 2016 Organized and circulated by the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria. This exhibition showcases the extensive and diverse subject matter of Chinese export paintings of the nineteenth century. Produced in trading posts for sale to Western customers, these collectible works were exported to Europe and later America, illustrating the visual world of China desired by Westerners. Scotiabank is the proud Presenting Sponsor for our summer 2016 exhibitions.

Upcoming Exhibition Jeff Nye: Recovery Rooms September 24, 2016 - January 8, 2017 Jeff Nye explores ideas of loss and memory and reflects upon the ways in which these factor into the relationship we have with various domestic environments. are offered in English and French.

Thank you, Claudette!

Being a docent is very rewarding. It provides me with opportunities to meet artists and develop friendships with other docents, staff and patrons of the gallery while learning and growing through the arts. It enables me to bridge the viewer and the artwork by igniting conversation and curiosity. As an art enthusiast and retired teacher, I cannot think of a better way to give back to my community.
