About Varley Public Programs Welcome to the Varley Art Gallery of Markham! We are located on Historic Main Street Unionville and our gallery spaces feature historical and contemporary art by regional and national artists with a special focus on the art of Frederick Horsman Varley (1881-1969), a founding member of the Group of Seven. We offer a variety of art programs for ages 4 and up, whether you are a beginner or an experienced artist, the gallery has something for everyone.

Adapted Services (Ages 7 – 12) Art Therapy- ADHD/ADD Ages 7 – 12 | VAG | Tuesdays, Sep 18 – Nov 6 | 4:00 – 5:00 p.m. | Sarah Bedley This eight week course offers children with Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) and Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) a structured and creative environment for artistic expression. Through individual and collaborative art making, children will practice social skills, deepen relationships with others and correct attention and impulsivity issues. Through drawing, painting and sculpting, children are provided an experience that can help them communicate feelings, relax and redirect unhelpful thoughts. Children will have the opportunity to use their imagination to creatively problem solve and feel empowered when facing their worries. They will have the chance to work independently as well as collaboratively on art projects. Art projects will be based on goals set in the initial meeting between participants and art therapist. Pre-Teen and Teen Programs (Ages 8 – 18) Growing Creativity – Art Portfolio Development Ages 14 – 18 | MAC | Mondays, Sep 17 – Nov 5 | 4:00 – 6:30 p.m. | Lisa Fong Suitable for high-school students interested in pursuing post-secondary studies in a creative field. This course will develop the groundwork for a winning portfolio that starts with clear statements of intent and building on creative and conceptual thinking through drawing fundamentals, and painting skills. Along with capturing the process, students will experiment through skill-building lessons, including sketching the figure, capturing gesture and rendering still-life. Students will be encouraged to participate in group discussions as a way to develop critical language and self-critique. Most materials provided. Art Camps Join us at the Varley this winter break! The Varley Art Gallery offers fun, educational and enriching winter camps to engage your child’s imagination! Children ages 4 – 12 will have the opportunity to express how they see the world around them through gallery visits and a range of art-making activities, using a variety of techniques and media. Students will develop an understanding of key camera functions and creative considerations in photography. Students are required to have a digital SLR camera and one lens, as well as the following recommended supplies: camera battery and charger, memory card, access to a computer and photo editing application/software, USB stick and a tripod. Transform and Transfer – Fine Art Photography VAG | Thursdays, Oct 11 – Nov 1 | 7:00 – 9:30 p.m. | Joel Clements Learn how to turn digital photographs into works of art that are ready to hang on your wall. This course, taught by a professional photographer and artist, is an introduction to image transfer techniques using laser prints, inkjet prints, and photocopies of photographs. You will learn how to transfer your images onto various substrates, canvas, wood, paper, and use a variety of painting, layering and stamping techniques. Students will take their images and turn them into mixed-media masterpieces. Examples of diverse techniques and finished art will be discussed so students will develop their own creative ideas. Life Drawing Drop-in Join us every Thursday for Life Drawing Drop-in sessions in our studio! We offer the opportunity for artists to practice nude drawing and build a social and artistic network by meeting and working amongst their peers. We provide easels, sinks, Wi-Fi, and free admission to the exhibition spaces. Bring your own sketching and drawing materials. Note: The sessions are non-instructional.
