Varley Art Gallery of Markham
Director’s Letter 2016 has been another great year. Inspired by the City of Markham’s commitment to excellence in customer service, the Varley Art Gallery piloted exciting new programs, directly responsive to our diverse community’s interests and needs. For families, we successfully expanded our Kinder Camps into the McKay Art Centre during the summer. For our members, we launched a Lunch & Learn series, bringing art professionals to share ideas over an informal brown bag lunch. For our 19+ audiences, we designed Art Social, uniting music, food and drink with interactive art experiences, and most importantly, fun. For artists, we initiated studio rentals at the McKay Art Centre, Life Drawing Drop-in sessions, and Studio Coaching, a professional development mentorship program. Added to these activities, 2016 has seen important upgrades to our facility including beautiful new wooden doors for our multi-use Deacon Room, along with a complete renovation of our public washrooms. To round out a wonderful, event-filled year, I invite you all to our second annual Very Varley Open House on December 15. This is the perfect opportunity to meet Varley staff, volunteers, supporters and friends, to share some refreshment and discover how you can become involved. I look forward to seeing you there!

Exhibitions
Innovative Spirit: The Prints and Drawings of Pudlo Pudlat On view until January 8, 2017 A showcase of works on paper by Inuit artist Pudlo Pudlat (1916-1992) exploring his rich and varied engagement with mark making. Ranging from early graphite drawings of silhouetted figures to imagery reflecting the introduction of power lines and aircraft within the arctic landscape, the works on display speak to the various subjects and mediums explored by the artist. Pudlo is a celebrated figure in the development of drawing in Cape Dorset (Kinngait), Nunavut, and one of the first Inuit artists to combine both traditional and modern imagery in his work. He used pen and paper to record the rapidly changing world around him and in the process, developed a unique visual style that stemmed from his own lived experience. See page 8 and 9 for exhibition-related programming.

Jeff Nye: Recovery Rooms On view until January 8, 2017 Jeff Nye’s paintings are physical explorations of loss and memory. His work reflects upon the ways in which time and emotion distort our relationships to the built environment. The artwork featured in Recovery Rooms depicts abstracted elements of both domestic and institutional spaces, settings of particular significance to the artist. Architectural details such as walls, windows and floorboards seemingly appear and disappear from these canvases, caught somewhere between the physical present and the remembered past.
Rock, Water, Tree: Group of Seven Works in the Jack MacQuarrie Collection On view until January 8, 2017 Drawing on the Jack MacQuarrie Collection, and supplemented by works from the Varley Art Gallery’s permanent holdings, this exhibition explores the recurring compositional building blocks of rock, water, tree, among others. Combined in numerous ways to produce the iconic images of the Group of Seven, they offer a surprising range of mood and meaning. Left page: Pudlo Pudlat, Untitled, 1988/1989, graphite, coloured pencil and felt pen on paper, 50.7 x 65.9 cm. Private Collection.
Above: Jeff Nye, Overcast Morning in the Living Room with Sapphire Showers (detail), 2015–2016, oil on canvas, 121.92 x 121.92 cm. Courtesy of the artist.
