Project Narrative The political and economic events of the 20th century resulted in the downgrading of Larissa’s city central core and the loss of its historical memory. The excessive development of private interest to the detriment of the public interest deprived the Frourio area of the role of the historic center. Since then there are have been numerous urban renewals to this area in order to revive its lost historic identity.

The main objective is to revive the areas with cultural interest and connect them with the social and economic life of the city. This research aims to restore the loss identity of the city and to create a multi – functional core. This core will establish a connection between Pineios River, Frourio Hill and City center based on urban heritage principles.

Thessaly

Architecture & Urbanism 2019 - 2020

The city of Larissa is located in the centre of Greece and it is the capital of the provenance of Thessaly. It is the largest city in terms of size and population of Central Greece. It is built on the two banks of the river Pineios and is located in the centre of the eastern part of the Thessalian plain. The position of the city is consolidated as the most important economic and administrative centre of the country (Litrokapis and Manika, 2009).

Larissa

Population: 160.000

The economy of Larissa is one of the two pillars of Thessalian development. A strong economic and social network has been developed between the city and the surrounding areas. This network was and still is, vital during the economic crisis of the country. It helped the city to maintain its status as an economic center of the country. Bird’s view of the city. Tangible and Intangible heritage The area of the proposal is rich with historical cultural and architectural heritage. On Frourio Hill are located important archeological monuments such as the ancient Theatre, the Bezesten and ruins of ancient churches. On this area is also located the metropolitan church of city. If we go beyond the limits of the hill, we observe that there are many historical buildings such as the Mill and the Mosque, as well the second Ancient Theater.

In Pineios river is located a festival structured around artistic activities which is pole of attraction for all the surrounding area. The river has rich fauna and flora and more specifically in inhabited by collared doves. Their sound is noticeable in the whole city and especially the night when they fly over from the central square to Pineios River in order to rest. These birds have been in the area for centuries and the sound of them defines the city.

Tangible and Intangible heritage Apart of the tangible and natural heritage, the area is rich with traditional stores that play a significant role on shaping the character of the area. These stores sell local products that relate to the economic activities of the city’s residents. It worth mention, that in Frourio Hill was located the street market for almost 4 centuries, then was relocated next to Pineios River and now its position it is in the limits of the city. This market is an integral part of the city’s heritage and it has a crucial role in the economic life of the city.

Urban Issue The city of Larissa has grown rapidly and unorganized over the years. The opening of the regional axis and the creation of working districts on the city limits have contributed to the diffusion of city boundaries. This uneven expansion have created accessibility problems in the city center.

These three areas Frourio Hill, Pineios River, City center are also dealing with problems such as vandalism, poor constructions, lack of urban equipment, abandoned buildings and excessive use of cars.

Photos taken in the historic center

Manchester School of Architecture

Another negative effect of the expansion is the loss of the historic identity of the city. There has been excessive development of private interest, especially in Frourio Hill, which downgraded the area. The lack of interest in the city’s cultural heritage enhance this situation even more. Another issue that the uneven expansion caused are the environmental problems of air and water pollution that are best seen in the banks of Pineios River.

Urban Heritage Design Principles

12

The project is based in five design principles. The focus was to enhance the identity of the city by connecting areas with cultural interest with the social and economic life of the city. After research of the contemporary issues that the city is facing, I focused my design on solutions that solve the lack of greenery and the abandoned infrastructures. However, one of the most influential principle of the project was to support the local economy.

Concept The concept of the project is to enhance the heritage of the city and respond to its contemporary requirements. By combining these two factors a multi – function core between Pineios River, City center and historic center is developed.

1. Enhancement of heritage

4. Utilization of existing infrastructure

2. Connectivity

This axis is consisted by cultural activities that enhance the identity of the city. The administrative axis connects the Ancient Theater with Ir. Polytechniou Street. The pedestrian paths in the city center expand to create a network between these two main axes. These two axis connect the historic center with the city center. In the historic center, the commercial area remains untouched because it is an important economic activity of the city. The identity of the city is enhanced by preserving the existing archeological sites and by introducing new activities in the area.

Urban Strategy

Architecture & Urbanism 2019 - 2020

The strategy for the city center is divided in three scales.

16

Axes (Macro Scale)

City center (Intermidiate)

Neighborhood (Micro Scale)

In the macro scale, two main pedestrian axes will be created, the cultural and the administrative. The cultural axis will connect the train station with the bus station. This axis will be consisted by cultural activities that enhance the identity of the city. The administrative axis will connect the Ancient Theater with Ir. Polytechniou street (connects the city with the highway). The administrative axis is an important connection between the city center and the surrounding areas with buildings such as the town hall, the Prefecture of Larisa, the Post office, the National bank of Greece and multiple office buildings. The pedestrian paths in the city center will expand to create a network between these two main axes.

The focus of the intermediate scale is to minimize the use of cars. The city center of Larissa is congested by the excessive use of cars. The administrative axis will be transformed into a low traffic road that enables only buses and delivery services vehicles. New underground parking and temporary parking spots would improve the life of people working in the area. In addition, open spaces in blocks and close ended streets will be transformed into themed pocket parks.

The micro scale focuses on the neighborhoods. The sidewalks will extend where commercial stores are located for providing seating areas. Green spaces will be added at the extend sidewalks to improve the microclimate of the area. New pavement surfaces will upgrade the city center and will help separate the use of each street (pedestrian, vehicle). A new lighting system will be build that will function as an indicator of the cultural path.

The analysis of the administrative axis (Papanastasiou Street) has shown that the area is mainly consisted by commercial stores that located at the ground floor. From the ground floor and up the buildings are mainly residential. However, the buildings closer to the central square are consisted by offices and services. Furthermore, the serial vision tool helped identify that the street is narrow due to the cars parked on the side of the streets. There are no cycle lane or pedestrian signs and cars occupy the central square. There are multiple deteriorated buildings in the area. Overall, this analysis enabled to establish the differences between these two axes and to proceed developing mild interventions that will improve the quality of life of the residents.

The analysis of the cultural axis (Iasonos street) has shown that the street is not arterial and is a peaceful neighborhood. The ground floors of the buildings are mixed used. There are abandoned stores, parking and small commercial stores (patisserie, supermarket, pharmacy). The rest of the floors are mainly residential. The street is dealing the same issues, as Papanastasiou Street even though is a low traffic street.

Program City center

Architecture & Urbanism 2019 - 2020

I classified the program into two categories tangible and intangible. The tangible category is consisted by the new built additions in the area. The intangible category is consisted by the new cultural activities that are introduced in the area.

20

The city center is consisted by two pedestrian axes, the administrative and the cultural. The administrative axis is consisted by two pocket parks; one is used as an outdoors cinema and the second one as open art exhibition. An underground parking will be built under the central square. The cultural axis is consisted by one pocket park that will function as stop for the users to rest during their walk. The abandoned buildings in this axis will be reused as as galleries and exhibitions. The open spaces and squares on both axes will be used for music festivals, traditional dances, and open market. These new cultural activities will enhance the intangible heritage of the city.

Program Intangible

Tangible Pocket park – outdoors cinema

Dance - use the open space for performances such as traditional dances

Underground parking

Exhibition - use the public space for art exhibition

Pocket park – use the car parking as new public space

Music - use the public space for music festivals

Pocket park – as a stop – transitional space between the neighborhood and the city center Neighborhood - reuse of the abandoned buildings as traditional shops

VASILIKI IAKOVAKI

By focusing on the cultural axis, Iasonos St. will transformed into a sharing street/woonerf. This strategy invite will pedestrians, cars and bicycles to use the street space without separating the users. The curb will be removed and a continuous level surface, a carpet, between the two framing facades buildings will be created. This will transform the street into a space mainly for pedestrians with cars as guests.

As the cultural path is quite long, approximately 20-30 walking to reach the bus station, it is essential to provide a stop. A pocket park could be created at the end of Iasonos St. where the pedestrians have to turn left to continue the path. This park will function as an area where people can relax during their walk. At the entrance of the pocket park, a pergola will be built for introducing more green in the area.

Two schools are located at the beginning of the road. At this area, a street park could be created. This portion of the street will permanently close to cars and transformed into a space for play, urban farming, and community gathering. This strategy will also help diverted automobiles from this street. As the area is consisted by multiple commercial stores in the ground floor, the sidewalks could extend. This strategy could provide room for cafĂŠ seating, street furniture and greenery. A new lighting system could be built that enhances the cultural path. This will improve the quality of life and will be friendlier to the pedestrians.

For tackling the issue of the cars parking on the side of the pavement a new underground parking will be built under the central square. Traffic Calming Solutions

26

For making the pedestrian path safer, traffic calming solutions will be introduced. In the areas where the pedestrian path meets with a vehicle street, traffic calming solution is required to reduce speed. On those junctions speed bumps could be installed and floor wayfinding to help pedestrians follow the path. Another solution is the extension of curb tha will help slow down the cars.

A field trip was made in order to analyze the current state of the site. Serial vision was applied in the site, which helped identify the problems the area is facing. The area is pedestrianized and two main roads that lead in and out of the city surround it. The archeological sites are preserved but the user cannot access them, only observe them. The lack of signs or indications for the archeological sites can cause frustration to the user. Vehicles occupy the open spaces of the hill even though their access is limited. The commercial are of the historic center is well preserved with a great number of abandoned buildings. Additionally, the site analysis of the historic center help establish the important historic buildings and identify which areas should remained untouched.

The intangible category is consisted by the new cultural activities that are introduced in the area. Four new pavilions will built in the area. Three of the pavilions will be built on top of existing ancient ruins. The fourth pavilion will be based on the site plan of the temple of Athena Polias and positioned in the same area that once was placed before. Bezesten will be conserved and reused as a market. For reintroducing economic activities in the area, an outdoors market will be built. A new museum will be built in the new axis between Bezesten and the Metropolitan church. This axis will lead to an elevator that connects the hill with the river through a bridge. The area will function as a cultural path where the empty spaces will enable cultural activities such as traditional dances, music festivals, performances.

The concept of this new addition is not to conserve the sites into their original form, but to provide a new use for the archeological sites. The chosen material for the new addition is concrete because it respects the ancient ruins and protects them against harsh weather conditions. The pavilions enable the user to explore the history of the area, interact with site and experience the historic center as a path to history.

Conservation of Bezesten

Architecture & Urbanism 2019 - 2020

Bezesten was built in the 15th century by Ottomans and was used as market, which sold mainly fabrics. The concept is to conserve the existing site (based on the original building) and reused it as a market. This action will help to support the local economy by enabling sellers to sell their products into the market. The conservation of the building in addition with the outdoors market will reintroduce a new economic activity in the area that has disappeared. These new additions enable to connect different parts of the history into one and embrace the cultural characteristics of different civilizations that once occupied the city.
