editors Tijana lilic and Danielle Edwards The second instalment of Vatra is a seasonally inspired issue. As we are a quarterly publication and are based in Australia, it seems natural to draw inspiration from the Australian seasonal patterns. Starting with the heat of summer. We are pleased to show you the summers from all over the world, some rainy, some bright and some night. All the contributors have been inspired by summer and have bought a unique style to what summer means to them. Jane and Jane are our featured photographers of the issue. Their editorial ‘Missus Scissorhands’ shows an amazing aptitude for creative angles and hard cropping. The reference to the film ‘Edward Scissorhands’ has been used to create an other-worldly character within a banal environment. Their editorial deserved the cover. We would also like to recognise Carlos Mangubat. Carlos is a Melbourne based wardrobe stylist whose quirky sense of fashion shows a great diversity and flair for the unique. He has been featured in three of our editorials; A Team, Follow the Pattern and Mixed Tape. He knows how to mix ‘wanting the unattainable’ into his styling choices that makes any product a must have. Finally we would like to mention Florence Leung. Her editorial the ‘The Visitor’ was the last editorial we accepted. Her creative interpretation of summer through coloured lights shows her forward thinking and creative eye. Thank you to each contributor for their amazing work. We hope you enjoy our ‘Summer’ issue.

My Interest in arts and crafts started from a very young age, which is a great time to start as an artist. People never criticize your work when you’re young; they just pile on praise, which only inspired me to continue. I made things out of random items from the craft store and spent a lot of time drawing in coloured books, on loose sheets of paper, even bedroom walls. Whatever i could get my hands on was a canvas to me. It wasnt until I was about eleven or twelve years old that I started using graphite pencils, I did my first ‘portrait illustration’ and truly fell in love with drawing. I grew up in New Zeland where I did most of my schooling and enjoyed taking art classes in pre primary and high school the most. I started with mostly penciled portraits as I loved drawing people’s facial features, especially eyes. I then moved onto acrylic painting when I was fourteen. I enjoyed the ‘messier’ style of painting, being able to get a bit more creative using different paint mediums for colour and texture; its hard, if not impossible to get the same effects using only graphite pencils. Now I use both mediums together in creating my artwork. I love using pencils for details and shading while using paint to add some extra flair to my work. At the end of high school, I focused
solely on art subjects for my university entrance portfoilo. I ended up taking three entrance exams: graphic design, printmaking and painting. I was awarded a scholarship to university for my graphic design portfolio. Around the same time, my family and I moved to the suburbs of Perth, Western Australia, where I enrolled in Curtain University to obtain my Bachelor of Arts in graphic design. I majored in illustration with a minor in digital illustration. Since then, I have extended my skill set by doing makeup artistry; the use of cosmetic mediums allowed me a whole new range of creativity. My work ranges from a natural makeup to high fashion makeup to artistic makeup and body painting. I love that i can mix both my work and my passion for art together! When I create an artwork, I usually have a general theme in mind prior to beginning. I then gather more inspiration from a collection of images, which I use as references. I start with the face as a base for the image, adding in extra elements and details. I rarely start with one hundred percent certainty of the finished product. Instead I find it more interesting to be open to the creative process and allow the artwork to grow into its own form.
He has a stunning realism style but also a great loose, sketchy style. I admire the portraiture work by Australian artist; Bec Winnel. My brother was also a big influence for my art when I was younger, as he drew a lot, too. What I love most about my artwork is the feeling I get while creating. It’s very relaxing and I can sit for hours at a time working on a piece. I find it fun to experiment with new materials and mediums and even the pieces I don’t like help me to developing my own, personalised style, in some way. I have sold many of my commissioned art pieces. My goal is to continue selling my original pieces and eventually move onto creating and selling prints as well. A big goal for me is having my own solo exhibition someday; I would really like to be able to share my passion with others and possibly inspire the creative spark in someone else.■

Tim Gordon is a Perth, W.A. based musician, singer and writer. A man of unique musical talent accompanied by the caress of an acustic guitar and a blend of lyrical harmony. His voice can transend you from reality into his emotive and soulful view of the world through melodic lullybys. We have recently watched Tim’s captivating live performace and have the pleasure of introducing you to his musical genious, so Listen Up! How would you describe your music? Tim Gordon: I would like to say it is a lot like a warm bath but maybe that is just wishful thinking. I guess it’s as close to a warm bath as rather heartfelt acoustic lullabies get. When did you first realize you wanted to purse a career in music? When I realized that im not all that good at anything else, and that it was the thing that made me happiest. Can you tell us a little bit about what got you started? Music has always been a huge part of my life, dad used to be a drummer and mum constantly showed me new music, then I got to school and it seemed to be the only thing that I enjoyed doing and the only subject I got good marks in. Just a natural progression really. As a child growing up, music surrounds us: what type of music did you hear the most back then? How does it differ from what you listen to now? A lot of Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan and a lot of Beatles, so I guess not all that much has changed except for the fact that I seek a lot more music rather than just being content with a couple of bands. People are constantly creating and you have to hear it all if you want to make sure that you are different. What’s your biggest musical influence? My biggest musical influence is probably Andrew Bird, and although I thoroughly enjoy his music, the reason that he is my biggest musical influence is the fact that he is pretty much the master of the genre of music that I am part of and that makes me listen to him and want to sound very different from him whilst staying within the same genre… its an odd influence. Can you describe the making of your first album from writing to pre-production to the recording? With my first one it all came together because I had 6 songs that were too soft for my band and my friend had a couple of days free at his studio. We really just rocked up there and just invited people to come jam, it was a great experience, but with this upcoming EP I’m definitely going for a much more professional approach. What are you currently working on? Currently I’m just doing some demos in preparation for recording an EP down south at lollybag studios. If I want this thing to sound exactly like I want it, too many more hours of my personal life are going to be forfeited, but I guess its all good, I don’t really do anything interesting anyway. 83 VATRA
Studio or Stage, where do you like being most? Stage, no doubt. I just love seeing peoples’ reactions to the music that I have written. Also the feeling of being on the stage is like nothing else in the world. How do you think your sound has evolved? I think I’ve progressed a lot in my singing abilities, and my lyrical content doesn’t seem to soley focus on girls that have broke my heart anymore. I’ve grown up a fair bit and I think it shows. How do you balance your music with other obligations -Family, jobs, etc? To be honest, fairly poorly. I try to work a bit so I can get some cash but I also think my family and friends have to be part of my life. So balancing this and music well, it just means I don’t sleep all that much, haha. How do you handle mistakes during a performance? I usually just tend to laugh, which can take away from the technical performance but I cant help but be me. There seems to be a lot of emphasis on posing and constantly keeping up your “image” but everything is easier if you just act like yourself. So if I make a mistake you will probably be able to tell, but hey, im only human…for now. What do you think your greatest opportunity has been so far in your musical career? I’m not too sure, every single show that I get to play is a new opportunity and I’m pretty thankful for each one. What do you feel distinguishes “an artist” from a musician? Some musicians are content with replicating and playing other peoples music, artists constantly strive to create new and different forms of the art that they are involved in. If you could perform with anyone in the world either dead, alive, or broken-up who would it be? Why? Jack White. The man has influenced me in so many different ways, and every single project he gets involved in, everyone who is in the project comes out a much better musician. Plus being on stage with Jack White would be rather surreal. As an artist, is there anything special you hope to be able to accomplish? To never be bored with what I am doing, constantly progress and to effect peoples lives with my music. Is there anything else you would like to tell us about? Make sure you wait half an hour after food before you go swimming! ■

Giselle Natassia is a Perth, W.A, based, concept-driven photographer specialising in advertising, documentary and entertainment photography. At the age of 26 she has completed studies in Creative Advertising Design and a Bachelor of Creative Industries in Photomedia. Her studies have been conducted at four universities, spreading over three different continents across the globe. She has exhibited worldwide, featured in a variety of journals and magazines and was National Geographic’s Photo of the Week in July 2012. Although relatively new to the scene and still honing her craft, she has won numerous awards both home and abroad. Constantly oscillating between dark and colourful themes, her skills best present themselves in the fusing of morbid, bizarre, romantic and tragic themes. Slightly less perverse than “fetish”, more extreme than “fashion”, Giselle’s macabre-glamour approach to photography is sure to raise eyebrows and appeal to those with an eye for the unusual. Her recent travels to Bangladesh and India have encouraged her to produce a number of photojournalistic series of images, which comment on the human condition and tell heartfelt stories. Most notably her series about HIV and Aids patients, in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Shortly after, her travels to India provided material for more uplifting tales, like this series “Holi-festival of colours”. As we leave spring behind in sunny Perth and slowly enter into the hot, beach-fueled months of summer. What better photojournalistic story to feature in this issue, but that of a flamboyant festival where coloured powder or water colours are thrown on one another. In India, many take it as an excuse to run wild and at times act inappropriately. As Hindu’s often say “Bura na mano, Holi hai” (Don’t feel offended, it’s Holi). ■
