CHAIRMAN’S REPORT The versatility of our members and organisers have been tested and proven over the last couple of months with occasional summer days being mixed in with many winter-like days. Never the less, events listed on our calendar have gone ahead and our thanks are due to those who organised them and those members who supported them in either good, or indifferent weather. All fingers crossed that the weather will be kind on February 7 for The Grand Country Garden Party. The same applies for the Branch Annual Rally on February 27 – 28, early entries for this are helpful for the organisers and close on February 22. Remember the Boot Fair on Saturday 13 February. Please also note that the Scrap Metal Drive has been pushed out one month until Saturday 13 March, so please start placing those metal items to one
side ready for that. Please, no rubbish and definitely no wheels with tyre
ROSS BUTLER Chairman ph 03 352 3160
We receive requests from some of the retirement villages for vintage or old cars to put in an appearance for residents to view, or in some instances to be given a ride, so if you would be prepared to take part in one of these visits, please give your name to Secretary, Rod Thrower. Rod has attended a number of these occasions and says that they can be both fun and rewarding and are much appreciated by the residents. Regards Ross

SECRETARY’S REPORT Happy New Year to all, and I hope you have had a good break with family and friends these last two months. There will be disruptions in the clubrooms over the next few months as we work though our major kitchen renovations, please bear with us on this. The Hub It gives me great pleasure to be able to put the Hub scenario behind me. As you know there are a few members for whatever reason who have found receiving or viewing the magazine online a pain in the butt. I would like to thank those on behalf on the committee that have perservered and stuck with the online version. To those that wish to revert back to the printed / posted version you now know how that is going to work. Simply deposit $41.60 in the branch account 03-1594-0096832-00 per year for 11 copies. Please include your membership number and Hub P/P I will be away during the first three weeks of February but will be able to access my emails if you require forms. Some are available at the magazine rack in the foyer or on the noticeboard. Notice of Motion - Feedback Invite I will be attending The National Executive Meeting in Wellington on the 20th March as your branch delegate, if there are any matters you would like raised at this meeting please let me know before or speak to me at the March Noggin. There is a Notice of Motion in this issue and on the noticeboard in the clubrooms. Any PAGE 6
relevent feedback or comments you want to make, ROD THROWER please send to the Secretary branch committee ph 03 338 2320 in writing by 25 Feb. This will be discussed at our March branch meeting. Remember I am usually available up by the stage at most noggins if you require forms or have any issues you wish to raise with your committee. (Don’t be surprised if I ask you to put it in writing) Unfinancial Members At 6 January we had 57 unfinancial members up 15 on last year. Subscriptions were due end of Oct 2020 and invoices were sent out end Sept with a reminder in Nov so these are now two and half months over due so you would have noticed you did not receive your Dec/ Jan Beaded Wheels. Subscriptions not paid at the time of the National Half year Exc Meeting 20th March will be removed from the database and will have to reapply for membership (losing any continuity of membership). Keep your contact details current Please update at National HQ. Addresses, Phone numbers and change emails that are no longer active, please make sure you notify myself or national office of changes. Thank you for the support given to those involved for a succesful Boxing day Run.
Congratulations to those involved In the Picnic Run in January, what a wonderful way to start off the New Year. Thank you to Tony Meikle and Ian Crew for supporting me at the visit to the Ashley Retirement Home. Thanks also to those that turned up for the visit to Lady Issac Retirement Village a week later. We get very good feedback from these visits and it gives me great pleasure to be involved. It does not give me any pleasure to have to go around hounding the same people over and over again. You would think with just under 1300 members I would have a few more names of who are prepared to give up a couple of hours to give enormous pleasure to these elderly residents, it is probably the highlight of their week. Think about it and give your name to myself so I’m not having to call on the same three or four over and over.
VCC EXTEND STARTING GRIDS You will no doubt be aware that it is now official that eligibility of cars competing in VCC Races and other competitive Events has been extended from 31 Dec 1960 to 31 Dec 1965. This is a welcome and well-overdue move to help re-build and strengthen our dwindling starting grids and look forward to seeing some new Saloon, Sports & Racing vehicles on the track. We at the Banks Peninsula Branch continue to nurture and foster all new competitors in the South Island and offer to help members of all Branches with any questions relating to the eligibility of their vehicles that now fall into the Pre-’65 Category. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR We would like to give a big thank you to David and Linda Inwood for the splendid weekend that they put together this year. About 40 cars met at Glentunnel on a beautifully hot and sunny mourning heading for Fairlie the route that we went took us through the most spectacular scenery with our lunch stop on the banks of Lake Tekapo with its beautiful turquoise water On the following day we had a real treat we went to Glenmore Station this is a high country sheep station about 19 thousand hectares the life style here is harsh but with so many wonderful views all around and the
fact you can fish for trout in your own back garden certainly makes it all worth while. We were lucky to drive the 5k dirt road up to the top of the property to see where the source of the river Cass flows into Lake Tekapo. Once again thanks for a lovely weekend. Rose and Mick Mariner

PROPOSED MEMBERSHIP CHANGES CURRENT CLAUSE WORDING: Vintage Car Club of New Zealand Incorporated
Formal Notice of Motion At the Executive Meeting on 14 August 2020, a proposed Notice of Motion was put to the meeting and given Formal Status. At the executive meeting George Kear advised that the proposed Notice of Motion works in conjunction with the proposed On-Line membership. As outlined in the Clubs By-Laws, this requires a step-bystep process. The Notice of Motion still has several other required steps prior to a vote by all members in 2021.
Why are these changes necessary? The Club’s Executive resolved that the provision of Online Membership Application be proceeded with. We have been assigned the task of making preparations for this to be enabled, so people of all ages, and in particular keen younger people, may be more inclined to apply for membership, enhancing the wellbeing of the Club in the future. To facilitate online membership the above amendments to the Club Constitution are required, and this Notice of Motion has been prepared so that the members can help manage the process. A Remit to amend the Club’s associated By-laws is also currently being prepared for similar consideration by the Club’s Executive, as that is also going to be crucial to the success of the Executive’s request.

Scrap Metal Drive Saturday 13 March (note: was to be held on 13th February)
This fundraising event has been organised to help fund the renovation of the kitchen in the clubrooms, which was originally to be funded by the 2020 Swap Meet, cancelled because of COVID-19. What we need is for you to collect as much scrap metal as you can, and bring it out to Cutler Park where it will be sorted and sent off for recycling. Anything metal will be accepted, but non-ferrous will be particularly welcome – old batteries, copper wire and pipes, alloy etc. Start looking around now and get rid of those now-useless scrap items and help fund the kitchen rebuild. Please don’t bring any wheels with tyres, upholstery items etc.
We will be accepting items from 9am until 3pm only. All enquiries to Colin Hey, Ph 021 883 807.

DECEMBER
NOGGIN Our December display was, a Great selection of various makes AND models of rare motorcycles. A big thank you, to Phil Jeeves, for organizing the December display. It was one of the best motorcycle displays we have had. Bringing one motorcycle to the display has its difficulties, but in some cases, a number of the members brought two or three motorcycles each to the display. This takes a lot of effort to transport their motorcycles, in vans and trailers, in some cases having to hire a trailer. Thank you to all of the following members, who made this special effort. Chris Parker, a very original, 1913 500cc Triumph TT. John Benn, 1972 250cc Benelli Super Sport and 1974 125cc Honda TL Trials. Jens Christensen, lovely 1935 225cc Royal Enfield Motor Carrier. VELOSOLEX OWNERS GROUP December
Well 2020 went like a flash didn’t it. Here we are now in 2021 and the VOG’s have done two fantastic jaunts terrorising the neighbourhoods or is that entertaining them. Perhaps it is gauging by the amount of smiles and waves we get when the “swarm” of Velolex’s pass through suburbia, we’ve even had a couple of “tradies” who were unloading a van stop and salute us as we hooned by, you don’t get that when you pass them by on your Jap’ Superbike. Hope you all had a fantastic Festive Season and are now looking forward to healthy happy new year with adventures a plenty ahead. Our December run was organised by John McIntyre and based in his hometown of Rangiora on a very hot Nor’Westerly Tuesday making for a challenging push especially when the wind hit us sideways, Father Christmas aka’ Pieter Maat even took part in the run on that day. Don’t know how he survived it after his journey from the North Pole. Believe me there was a lot of pedalling required by Pieter as his Solex is lacking a bit in power (compared to others) and with the full Father Christmas regalia on it sure was a mammoth effort.
PAGE 16
ROYCE VOG 1
We had a great ride around the quieter streets of Rangiora but at times we had to brave the onslaught of giant juggernauts and motor vehicles as we crossed over main arterial routes, blimey Rangiora is no longer a sleepy little country town. The morning’s route eventually brought us to the ‘Brook Hotel for a very scrumptious roast lunch and after being fully fortified and entertained by the usual chatter we headed back on the roads, fortunately by then the wind had dropped a couple of K’s per hour making the return journey back to the start/finish much more enjoyable. Only one breakdown this time and that was right at the start, lack of fuel getting through was the problem and even a rebuild of the fuel pump on the side of the road by team ‘Solex expert Rhys Jones wouldn’t coax Alan Stack’s “little tart” into life. Thanks John for organising a magic day out. 2021
And now it’s January 2021 Tuesday 12th in fact and we all survived the Festive Season, the VOG’s once again hit the roads to do what we thought was just going be a short doddle but ended a 34k jaunt, now that’s a big number when you’re riding a Velosolex at between 20 – 22km/h Our member Dave Marks had organised a journey from his home in Highstead Road out to Spencer Park via Regents Park and Northwood, to Belfast and eventually ending up on Lower Styx Rd, and of course a head wind to battle all the way to Spencerville and turn off
for Spencer Park. That Lower Styx Rd is a marathon and a half even without that strong easterly so we really welcomed the arrival of Spencer Park where we able to dismount and stretch our legs and have a bit of a yarn. We had 13 riders turn up on the day but only 12 of us managed the ride, poor ole’ Gary Thompson’s beast once again let him down. He didn’t even
manage to pass “go” and collect his $200 so Gary did the trip in the backup vehicle again, he was the worthy recipient of the Lyall Hurst Hard Lucky Trophy.Once again another enjoyable day doing what we all enjoy. All the Best for 2021 to all our readers. Royce VOG1

VETERAN REPORT Although it’s been a quiet period over Christmas, there’s still been opportunities to get the veteran cars out and take part in a few outings. Very wet weather for the Boxing Day Picnic Run to Ouruhia Domain forced a change of venue to the Barn. Around 20 people turned up though, so we still had a good catch-up. A vote of thanks to Don and Judy Bennetts for organising the day and the last-minute change of venues. Perfect weather prevailed for the Banks Peninsula Branch New Year’s Day outing at Little River, and Malcolm and Anita McGibbon and Jenny and I trailered our cars to the Banks Peninsula Transport Yard in Cooptown and then drove them back to the Little River Domain from there. Malcolm and Anita took the 1914 Renault (DIC delivery car) and we took our 1909 Wolseley Siddeley. Our car ended up a bit one-eyed though after one of the headlight brackets broke off as I was loading it onto the trailer – luckily I was on the lawn, and it was only slightly damaged when I ran it over! There was a huge turnout of cars in the domain – in places lined up three rows thick in the shady areas – and lots of happy people walking around catching up with friends and checking out the cars. Together with a brass band playing and a real picnic atmosphere, this would have to be one of the best casual old-car events anywhere. We also took our Wolseley Siddeley to the Picnic Run on 10 January (with both headlights this time), but we did cheat a bit by using our 6/99 for the run (which included a drive up the new Northern Corridor and back again). The PAGE 18
COLIN HEY Veteran Convenor Ph 359-8737 021 883 807 finish destination was Peter and Carol Gatehouse’s property in Jowers Road (only 3km from home) so we called in and swapped cars. A very pleasant afternoon having a picnic lunch with friends and then enjoying the stunning garden in the property next door, and another opportunity to give the veteran an outing. The highlight for the month for us was the annual Dunedin to Brighton Run on 16th January. We took our 1912 Wolseley, and Malcom and Anita took their 1915 Swift – the only two entries from our branch out of a total of 40. Arriving in Dunedin on Friday afternoon, proceedings got underway with registration and a supper in the Otago clubrooms that evening. The following morning we all assembled in the First Church car park a short distance from the Octagon, before driving around the block to line up in the centre of the Octagon at 10am for the public display. At 11am we were waved off by the mayor, and soon over the slightly challenging hills before the easier run from Green Island out to Brighton where the field tests and lunch were held. Our son Matthew came with us for the weekend, so the three of us filled the seat in the Wolseley and thoroughly enjoyed the drive out there and back. Prize giving that evening saw Malcolm and Anita awarded runner-up in the field tests, and overall winner of the concours trophy. There has been an excellent video uploaded that shows all of the cars on display in the Octagon and then leaving on the run – go to https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=HoauPTIktJU&t=352s On Sunday we travelled out to Careys Bay
Cars and bikes lined up in the Dunedin Octagon for the start of the 2021 Dunedin to Brighton Run
for lunch, and then bid our farewells for another year to go and catch up with some Wolseley Car Club friends in Dunedin. For February, the highlight will the Garden Party on Sunday 7th February. The run from the assembly point in Prebbleton is approximately 25km of flat running, so will suit veteran cars and bikes. Note the call to come dressed in the era of your vehicle and to bring some ‘panache’ to brighten the venue up a bit. Remember that veteran vehicles attending will be parked on the lawn at the homestead. Later in February there is the Branch Annual Rally on 27 - 28 February (see elsewhere in the Hub), but I hope many of you will also use this as another opportunity to fly the veteran flag. The Sunday part of the event will be good too, with the opportunity to drive to the clubrooms and relax with lunch and entertainment provided. Unfortunately Jenny and I will miss this as we’re taking the 1912 Wolseley up to the Art Deco event in Napier. I understand Bruce and Shirley Shadbolt and Ian and Rosemary Close are also taking their cars up, and with over 50 veteran entries it should be a great event. There are several veterans already booked from elsewhere in the South Island for this event, so it’s shaping up well. This excellent run around the Malvern area is once again being organised by Malcolm McGibbon, and entry forms will be in the March Hub. PAGE 19
VINTAGE ANNUAL RALLY Ten cars meet at Cutler Park for the re-run of the Vintage Annual Rally. The day was much brighter with no sign of the heavy rain or high winds that previously caused the postponement of the rally in November. After a simple drivers briefing cars got away turning right form Cutler Park heading up to Kaiapoi. Crossing over the motorway overbridge and skirting around Rangiora to cross the Ashley River we headed into North Lowburn. Some great views were enjoyed back over the Canterbury Plains as we started to climb up to Birch Hill before crossing the Ashley

Gorge bridge and descending into Oxford. Dave Inwood found a great spot for lunch by the river. The Field Test was won by Joseph McClintock and his answer to the question “What is the definition of a Field?” was “Large area to race around in cars and motorbikes and make dust” Peoples choice was won by Don Muller’s 1923 Ansaldo Overall winner for 2021 Leigh and Tony Craythorn driving 1926 Morris Oxford. Thank you for all your entries and we will see you again at the 2021 Vintage Annual Rally.

9-90’s REPORT
Christmas Lunch Hi to you all. Well, 79 people came to the lunch at Pineacres. Bruce, where were you? (I believe he forgot and spent the day in the garden!) The food was as good as last year or even better so we booked again for next year. 80 will be the limit again. All we can hope for is good weather and that Covid 19 stays away! Thank you for all your support in 2020. FEBRUARY 10 Organisers George Nimmo and Jack Porter. Meet at The Peg Carpark, Belfast Pub at 9.55am. MARCH 10 John Winchester Meet at Rolleston Community Centre at 9.55am. The Team and I are looking forward to 2021. Regards, J K P.S. Nurse Maud received $370 from the entry fees during the year. FUTURE EVENTS Please check your emails or the club website for any cancellation of our future trips.
JOHN KUIPERS 9-90’s Coordinator
Old Cars, Bikes & Coffee OCBC will begin again for 2021 on Sunday morning 21 February, and thereafter be held on the 3rd Sunday of every month. Same format as last year – arrive any time after 9.00am and bring any vehicle of interest – it doesn’t even have to be club eligible. Enjoy a coffee and just have a look at whatever turns up and a chat with fellow enthusiasts, and leave whenever you like. If you belong to a one-make club, please feel free to use OCBC as the start-point to a run or as a meeting place – the more cars and bikes we have there the better it is. Colin Hey

MOTORCYCLE REPORT The Committee of the Motorcycle Section wishes all its members a Happy New Year; may it prove to be better than the last! Summer days are here; make the best of those warm sunny bike riding days! PAST EVENTS
28th November – Fish & Chip run. An excellent turn-out of about 20 bikes and riders took part in a garage raid out Balcairn way. A great spectacle awaited us; and mine host had some very definite opinions on our intended stop for lunch; so much so we were force to try out his local, the Sefton Pub. We were not disappointed…
3rd December – Main VCC Noggin. This featured a display of motorcycles; it was very refreshing to see all sorts of bike not normally seen at events but tucked away in a garage somewhere. Thanks to Phil Jeeves for the shoulder tapping.
New Year Run 2Jan 2021. PAGE 22
CHRIS LEITH Motorcycle Section 9th December – Christmas Noggin in the Barn, Cutler Park. About 50 people turned up to celebrate the EOY in a way only motorcyclists know how… An excellent meal, congrats to the caterers, very well done!!
2nd January 2021 – Motorcycle New Year Run. Not a very nice day to start off, in fact rain was the order of the day in Chch. As is often the way, get a few miles away to the north and the rain stopped… About a dozen bikes fronted up, and a couple or three cars (at least they were club eligible and one was a Triumph…) enjoyed a run to the north with lunch at the Mill Café in Waikuku.
23rd January 2021 – Fish & Chip Run. A good turn-out of about 15 bikes enjoyed the first F&C run of the year. A rare guest appearance by Peter May, too! A circuitous route to Lincoln to undertake a garage raid on a shed full of bikes there, then I think it was off to The Grouse for lunch… (I couldn’t go…)
FUTURE EVENTS
10th February 2021 – Motorcycle Noggin. At Motorcycle Corner, Cutler Park, 7.30 pm.
14th February 2021 - Moped Run. Starts PMH Hospital, 10.30 am, so meet about 10.15 am. Will be a little hill work, and Kurt Ebrecht is the organiser. He is on 021 043 3707, and email is kurt.ebrecht@ gmail.com.
20th February 2021 - Motorcycle Annual Rally. See elsewhere for full details, entry form, etc. One thing to mention, there are LOTS of trophies available to be won. While not everyone are pot-hunters it is nice to be recognised for a good performance on this the premier motorcycling event of the calendar.
21st February 2021 – Annual Clip-on Rally. Assemble at Cutler Park in readiness for a 10.30 am start. Enjoy the thrill and wind whistling thru your hair at 20 m p h. A short run to a snack house then back to the park. A back up vehicle will be provided and please ride to be seen. Organiser is Alister McKenzie 3554017 and Doug Watkinson, ph 383 1817 or 027 727 4466.

27th February 2021 – Fish & Chip Run. Nothing planned at this point, so meet as usual at BP, Moorhouse & Antigua St, 10.15 am for a 10.30 am departure. If we do think of something well worthwhile we will let the motorcyclists know via the email mail-out.
6th – 7th March -, Jim Toohey Rally. This will be an overnight event. As the National Motorcycle Rally is the following week the Jim Toohey will be kept quite local. We are looking to go the Mid Canterbury area with an overnight in Methven. See page 26 for more info and an entry form. HIGHLAND FLING RALLY 2021
RALLY UPDATE
ENTRY NUMBERS Folks we have well and truly now hit the 100 with the number of drivers who have registered to do the Highland Fling Rally! Unfortunate as it is, we must now bring the date for closure of entries forward two months to 31 January 2021. The accommodation and catering are now at their max for little old Taihape, with the number of people we will have descending upon their little country town. A few things I would like to bring to your attention please. 1) We are currently holding refunds for the following people and would like to return their monies if they do not intend entering this year. S WINTERBOTTOM, B WASHINGTON, A SHARP, T De LEEUW, T ANDREWS PLEASE NOTE – It is important that if you do want to enter, you fill in a new entry form, as there has been a price increase from the previous entry form for the Sunday evening meal. 2) The following people have paid but we are awaiting their entry forms please B TURNER, J WILSON, F POINTON 3) Some very keen members have sent in entry forms but are yet to pay. (Please advise me asap if otherwise) G BISHOP, C MATHEWS, K KNIELSEN, D HURLEY 4) As well many folks seem to have overlooked the entry fee when filling out their entry forms, therefore not paid the $40. I am sure everyone has a copy of what they have sent us, could you please double check to make sure you have paid that Entry Fee. MEDICAL HELP Another little shout-out please, if we have any doctors or nurses amongst the entrants, we would love to hear from you. We are hoping for an accident-free weekend of any sort, but we need to be prepared just in case someone busts a blood vessel from laughing too much. REGISTRATION & MERCHANDISE Registration will be from Friday evening 4 pm at the Gretna Hotel. For the many folks that have ordered ‘Fling’ apparel, your items will be in your Registration Packs and handed out on arrival. BRIEFINGS Organiser Alastair Jones will be doing his briefings 7.30 am on the Saturday and Sunday mornings outside the Gretna Hotel in Hautapu Street. REFUNDS Should anyone change their mind for whatever reason or have a change in circumstances, the final date for refunds will be 31 March 2021 If anyone has any further queries, please do not hesitate to contact either Alastair or myself Alastair – 07 576 1124 Kaaren – 021 66 43 41
