CHAIRMAN’S REPORT It was good to be able to meet again at the October Noggin – it was pleasing to see that everyone abided by the COVID-19 guidelines, in order that we were able to do so. Strange that wearing a mask can often make immediate recognition so much harder! (The Parts Shed is also operating under the guidelines – great.)

Thank you to those who made the effort to attend the Special General Meeting to elect a Branch Chairman following Ross Butler’s untimely death. I was honoured that he proposed me for this position and that I am able to carry on his good work in this regard. I propose to start shoulder-tapping during 2022, as I think it is important that we keep new and fresh people in this and other committee positions. We have been able to take part in a number of branch events over the last month (even though they have had to be somewhat altered from the “norm”) and hopefully, with a few adjustments, we can look forward to the rest of the motoring calendar. Some though, have had to be postponed until our COVID-19 levels can be lowered and our annual Swap Meet is one of these. See Colin’s report elsewhere. A big shout out (see how I have used a popular COVID-19 phrase?) to our hard- working Treasurer, Robyn Cox. This position is very much a behind the scenes one and we don’t appreciate how much the branch depends on her expertise to make sure that balances are not only put in place, but that they are done in the proper and appropriate manner. Now that cheques have become redundant, her work load has increased as she has to marry up all the deposits we make on-line into the branch account, with the entries into our events – no easy task. Thank you Robyn for your quiet, efficient work in this area. Please get vaccinated if you haven’t already done so and wear your mask. (In the future, we may have to restrict members meeting at our clubrooms to those holding a vaccination passport.) Leigh 6

SECRETARY’S REPORT Subscriptions 2021/22 . Well you all should have received your subscription account from National Office by now, if not let National office know, Linda at admin@vcc.org.nz. For those that have provided an email address it would come by email otherwise by snail mail post. (Check your spam box if you have not received it yet.) When paying on line PLEASE make sure you check you have the right account <12-3151-0184322-00> and you include your Membership Number and Surname. If you have been on the printed /posted copy of the Hub you will notice that the subscription for this year is included on your account and you will pay the total to National Office who will then send this to our branch as part of our yearly Branch Levy. If you wish to join this list you need to let me know one way or the other which account you have deposited the $41.60 into. Canterbury preferred 03-1594-0096832-00 please include your surname or membership number including the word HUB As I think you will agree with me, Tony is doing an awesome job on the production of the magazine and looking after the Web site, he must be because my phone has gone quiet on this matter lately. For those that have entered the Vintage Annual Rally thank you in advance, a very pleasing number this year - should be a great event. See you around like a wheel. Rod Cant. CLUB CAPTAIN’S REPORT A big thank you to Linda White for organising the Lady Drivers and Youth Rallies. We had a great day, particularly trying to drive remote cars and throw hand bags into circles at a distance! The museum full of great memories of the past made some of us feel old and the young ones feeling gobsmacked. The Grasskhana, organised by Paul Ainsworth, held over labour weekend was a hit for those who attended. Look out for a new date next year with plenty of fresh challenges. Things to look forward to this month are: Annual Vintage Rally Saturday 6th November 2021 with Graham Evans, Mark Drury and Lyndsey Saunders Awards Dinner Sunday 7th November 2021 with Leigh and Tony Craythorne Motorcycle Annual Rally 20th November 2021 with Paul Ainsworth Homestead Run 21st November 2021 – with Colin Hey and Katryna Shaw Old Cars, Bikes and Coffee 21st November 2021 – always brilliant to see different vehicles and have a good catch up with friends.

TRAVEL PRESENTATION Wednesday 24 November 7.00 pm – Main Hall Cutler Park Wellington VCC members Elisabeth and Fred Smits will be making a presentation of their six years around the world tour in their 1957 Mecedes-Benz. The tour to-date (182,000km) has included one year in the US and Canada, one year in Mexico and Central America, 2.5 years in South America and one year in Europe; because of COVID they are now “stranded” in New Zealand. They will tell how they came up with that stupid idea of two, very late 60-plussers driving a 64 year-old car unsupported around the world; the preparations of the car, tent-trailer and themselves, their route so far and future travel plans. The Smits’ love to share their travel experiences and excitements, their love for seeing this beautiful world and meeting the local people. Aided by short video clips and numerous pretty pictures they tell you about them being pit crew at Bonneville, how they crossed the 5,000m high mountain passes of the Andes and survived that night in the Brazilian Amazon surrounded by hungry jaguars, how red ants invaded their tent and car in Guatemala, about their money laundering in Chile, their visits to the Galapagos Islands and Antarctica, and how they were arrested by a drug squad in Honduras. Recently, VCC Ashburton branch enjoyed the Smits’ 100th presentation - come along for an interesting evening. Members, friends and family are all warmly invited.

Ross Butler Members and friends of Ross are invited to honour his memory at an afternoon in the Main Hall Cutler Park. Sunday 12th December 1.30pm 9

COMMERCIAL REPORT Unfortunately I couldn’t make it to the October commercial noggin, but I am reliably informed that it was an enjoyable evening, thanks to Lyndsey and Myra Saunders for hosting at their place, along with the usual interesting bits and pieces to puzzle at. After consulting briefly I’m not aware of any plans for the November commercial noggin, so will volunteer to host at my place, 8 Autumn Place, Mairehau on the third Wednesday of the month as usual, 17th November. Neil Shaskey Commercial Convenor. Lyndsey Saunders always has some interesting items for us to identify. Here he is showing Peter Monro Myra’s new washing machine. Bruce McCormick below doesn’t think it will catch on.

VETERAN REPORT After a postponement due to wet weather, the new date for this year’s annual veteran rally on10th October produced a picture-perfect day – ideal for our motoring and to enjoy the surroundings at our finish destination of Racecourse Hill homestead just out of Darfield. This year the run began at Malcolm and Anita McGibbon’s home in Telegraph road, where there was plenty of room for trailers and space to enjoy the pre-start morning tea and briefing. This year our numbers were boosted by 3 cars from Ashburton – Diane and Rob Ross (1902 Oldsmobile, Gavin and Annette Hunt (1903 Darracq) and David Oakley with Bruce McIlroy (1914 Rover) – great to have them along for the run. The time trial was held from the gate as cars departed, and ended at the entrance to Darfield 6km later. It was interesting to see the change in order of cars from start to finish of the timed section – obviously there was some overtaking going on along this stretch of road. In Darfield there was a quick visit to the small but interesting Fire Museum, and from there the cars split into two routes, a short one of 20km and a longer one of 40km for the more powerful cars. Both routes kept off the highways as much as possible, so the motoring was flat and easy, and by now the day was warming up too, making it particularly pleasant. The run finished in a field adjacent to the Homestead, with everyone easily arriving in time for lunch. We were joined there too by Richard and Kate Foster who had driven from Hororata in their 1915 Humber. An open day in the gardens meant there were a few spectators around too. We were then free to enjoy the gardens which were in full spring splendour - a very pleasant place to be on such a nice day. Field tests were then held – just a few simple tests that didn’t tax anyone too much. People began heading for home from 2.00pm, but a few of us left at the end were treated to the chance to have our cars photographed in front of the homestead now that most of the public had left the gardens as well. The run back to the McGibbon’s was a literally a breeze, with a slight downhill run and a tail wind, and once there Malcolm cooked up a few sausages to sustain us for the trip home. 11

A big shout out to the 16 veteran entrants, and to the extra 9 in newer clubeligible cars who joined us. Hat’s off to the few that motored all the way from home – especially Tim and Thomas Palmer who came all the way from Rangiora through the Waimak Gorge in their 1912 Unic, and Don and Judy Bennetts who drove from Marshland in their Albion. A special thanks too to Leigh and Tony Craythorne and Matthew Hey who were our marshals on the day, and to Malcolm and Anita for the use of your property for the start and finish. The results for the day were as follows: First place in time trial – John and Deborah McLachlan – 1918 Cadillac First place in field tests – Mike and Heather Glenday – driving Bevars Binnie’s 1914 Hupmobile Winner of Concours – Malcolm and Anita McGibbon – 1914 Renault Overall Winner – John and Deborah McLachlan – 1918 Cadillac. The next event on our own personal calendar is the National Veteran Rally in Cromwell over 29th to 31st October. Our plan is to leave our car there in the trailer and return two weeks later for the Pioneer Motoring Group run in Clyde. We’re then into the season of general branch runs like the Boxing Day run and the January picnic. We shall try and fit in another branch veteran run in the New Year between everything else that will be kicking off because we’ll be free of Covid restrictions, eh???? Happy veteran motoring in the meantime…. Colin Hey Veteran Convenor

OCBC (Old Cars, Bikes & Coffee) REPORT The October OCBC turned out to be another large gathering, with numbers boosted by those who came to take part in the All British Day, which started from OCBC this year. The British contingent somewhat emptied the gathering as the cars departed at their leisure around 11.00am on a run which took them off to Greendale Reserve for lunch. The November OCBC on Sunday 21st will be the start point for another branch event – the Annual Homestead Run, which will hopefully attract another great gathering of club vehicles. Be sure to get there in plenty of time, especially if you want to grab a coffee from the coffee van. Amy the barista tends to get very busy from about 10.00am onwards and there can be a wait of 5 or 10 minutes for your order. Remember that OCBC is open to any vehicle anyone wants to bring out, either to show off or just get out of the garage to give it a run. It’s not just for club members – any car, motorcycle or even truck enthusiast is welcome to join us in the club grounds. It’s typically getting underway at 9.00am, and you can leave at any time if you need to get away to do something else. Best of all it’s free, and is a great opportunity to catch up with mates, go and have a browse around the spares shed, or just have a look around and go again if that’s all you want to do. Colin

Hi to you all In conditions you wouldn't send a dog out 15 cars and 29 people gathered at the Dunsandel Community Centre. Ray and Linda Maginness did a great job, having struck problems at the last minute, organising this run. Ray even had one sleepless night. A big thanks to you both. We went to the Selwyn Heritage Park, which is in the process of being set up, and by the look of it a lot of work ahead. So, if any of you have time on your hands, and you want to give your wife or partner some time off, give Ray a ring and you can make yourself useful. I'm sure I can say that everyone who came had an enjoyable day.

We had lunch in a nice warm office and a good raffle and a few wise cracks. I am pleased we went. November 10 Ray Grainger: Meet at Cutler Park, McLeans Island at 9.55am. December 8 Christmas Lunch Pineacres See you all next month.

Women and Young Driver’s Rally The Women and Under 25 year old drivers rallies were combined and run on a very sunny afternoon on 16 October. 17 cars in total including 4 entered in the young driver's section made for a lovely friendly group, until the field tests started! The look of concentration on the faces when tackling the radio controlled car obstacle course, the athleticism in the hand-bag toss and the skill in the reverse driving test were inspiring.

The rally was a reasonably direct route to Rangiora via Kaiapoi and Tuahiwi with only a few looking for Southbrook when the notes said Northbrook (it said something about a brook, I don't know, turn here, it will do!). A few tricky questions on the entry to the Sparks Colonial Museum and it was all done bar the visit to

the many many sheds of incredible history including prams, bikes, tractors, bricks, dentistry, old shop contents, appliances, and I'm sure I saw a kitchen sink somewhere. A wonderful afternoon tea was put on by the Spark family and a parade of hats and handbags from our ladies (and one young gent with a "handbag" containing a tuba!). First prize for the fashion parade was Ngaio Lott. The winner of the Under 25 year old Driver's rally was Taylor White (1973 Austin Mini Clubman), with Matthew Harris in second place (1993 Ford Laser). The winner of the Junior Ladies Trophy was Rebecca Harris (2001 Toyota Corolla), with Daniella Judge in second place (1974 Triumph). The winner of the Women's rally was Leigh Craythorne (1926 Morris Oxford), with Amanda Franklin in second place. Huge thanks to my helpers on the day, Martin and Marcus White, and Liz Comery.

MOTORCYCLE REPORT The second month of Spring done and dusted, what will the next bring? Past Events. 13th October – Motorcycle Noggin Night. After the M/C committee meeting about a dozen or so enjoyed an evening of talking rubbish. 16-17 October – Girder Fork Start of the Girder Rally Rally. Great event, about 28 starters. The usual overnight in Akaroa; see elsewhere for a full write-up. Noticeably, only about a dozen bikes there for the ride back Sunday, why did the rest go home early?? 23rd October - Fish & Chip Run – Just had a call from Kurt; he was the only rider to turn up for the Labour Weekend F&C run… Future Events. 6th November – Motorcycle Skills Training. Not proceeding with this; enough going on at the moment so will be rescheduled next year sometime. 10th November – Motorcycle Noggin. Decided we’d meet at the Valley Inn, Heathcote Valley, from 7.30 pm. 20th November – Annual Motorcycle Rally. Note, a CHANGE OF DATE. Entry in September Hub or On Line. Meet at 9.30am for a 10.00 am start, at McLeans Island. Lunch break is at Balcairn; with a very interesting collection of motorcycles to view. In the evening the meal will be at the Motorcycle Corner, BYO meat & salads for a shared meal, from 5.00 pm. The usual prize giving will take place then too. 21

21st November – Homestead Run. Mentioned here as a lot of motorcyclists do go on this run… 26 – 27 – 28th November – the DELAYED Canterbury Swap Meet. (Now February-Ed) 27th November – Fish & Chip Run – this is CANCELLED. 8th December – Motorcycle Noggin, usually a Christmas Special. Details to be sorted at the next M/C committee meeting, so watch out for an email mail-out, and the next Hub. Girder Rally Overall and Publican’s Choice Trophy winner Russell Dale and Indian.

Traditionally there is no Fish & Chip run in December – if there were it would be Saturday 25th – Christmas Day. Instead the Committee is looking at the 11th December as a F&C Run – partially to make up for November being cancelled because of the Swap Meet, and the non-run of October’s at Labour Weekend… As at closing date for The Hub it looks like we have a couple of garage raids organised for somewhere in the Oxford – Darfield area, so keep an eye out for the December Hub for more details. These are great places, you will not be disappointed! 26th December – Boxing Day Picnic Run. Motorcycles are very welcome; see December Hub for destination and other details. 1st January 2022– Picnic Run to Little River. The Banks Peninsular Branch runs this event, is a very popular relaxing day picnicking in the sun or in the shade of the trees, listening to the Ch Ch Big Band playing…. Again, motorcyclists most welcome (even those who drive their cars…) Turn up when you like, go home when you like, from about 10.30 am onwards… 2nd January 2022 – Motorcycle New Year Run. Starts at Cutler Park, 10.00 am meet-up. Riders will decide on the day the destination. This might change if we can come up with a destination; watch the December Hub. That’s it for now, Cheers, CML. 22

The Girder Rally 2021 Seeing the entry for the 2021 Annual Girder Rally in the Hub was a welcome distraction to my life and I thought perhaps also to other club members with the current ongoing restrictions to their old “normal” life. I was impressed to see the Western Valley Road was included in the long route. In the summer I have been known to leave my property near Lincoln and go to the Little River shop just to get an ice cream via Gebbies Valley and the Western Valley road, there and back in about 1.5 hours. Great bush scenery and avoids much of the Christchurch to Akaroa race track. When you live at your work like I do a change of environment can only be good for you, even more so to wake up to the nice scenery Banks Peninsula has to offer, plus you never know who you will meet, like the experienced spray contractor I could glean some crop spraying advice from that you are not going to get from any instruction book. (Thanks Stuart) So it does not have to be just about motorcycle talk. I like to be organized and so purchased some extra supply of the special non foaming oil I get from Wayne Hill Motors Lincoln

Looking overjoyed at their success are Girder Rally prize winners Joseph McClintock (Time Trial), Alistair Kermode (Vintage Trophy), Russell Dale (Overall Winner), Alan McLeod Dick of the Run (hard luck trophy) Photos thanks to Chris Leith.

Road. The good news is the oil is still cheaper than the complete rebuild. I also thought I was a head of the game by re lining the main rear brake for the hills. All I can say is it was probably a good thing that we had a lot of rain early in the week as I’m sure the smoking brake could have started a fire if the area was dry, anyway with a bit of adjustment I got there and back safely, fortunately it has an extra emergency brake (Thanks Joseph and George for your contact advice re “Under Car” on Hayton’s Road). I now have one whole year until next year’s rally to give my motorcycle some more TLC. I hope to be there as my motorcycle will be 100 years old in 2022. Good food was had at Duvauchelle Hotel, The Madeira Hotel, Bully Hayes Cafe and the Little River Diner. The Diner at Little River seems to be coming NZ’s version of the famous London ACE café with a wide variety of motorcycle’s parked outside including a ACE motorcycle of all things. Hats off to the Girder rally organizers for including some new scenery along the way. I was told 32 entrants participated with three 4 cylinder motorcycles included.

The Ross Butler Memorial Grasskhana

A little cool at the 10 am start but it warmed up as the sun shone through . A good array of cars and bikes turned up and several had two drivers. One rider had two bikes, old and not so old. This is not a speed event as such and was judged by the time difference between two runs on each of three courses. Speeds from sedate to furious were chosen by the driver. Some managed exact same times, others were a bit of an oops. Hitting a cone or running it over was a five second penalty. After some friendly encouragement two women were entered and came off each course with a smile all over their face. A good decision to be involved. It would be good to see more women next year. Some competitors needed a navigator to get the course correct which I think was an advantage as the cones start to look the same.

For a full list of winners please see previous page

Some cars kicked up the dust and made a few grooves on the corners (sorry Mike and the grounds Team). A few mechanicals had to be sorted like a frantic trip to the parts shed (good thing it was open) to get another fuel pump and an exhaust muffler falling off the moped that was refitted and held on by a bungee. Congratulations to the winners, actually everyone who had a go, like the overall winner who shared the Austin 7 beating the owner. The Woman’s winner was also the youngest driver and sharing driving Dad’s car for the first time. Sharing seems to be the secret to success. I still have a smile on my face while I write this, so have a go and encourage someone else to drive with you to have some FUN. I got the shortest time on course, what does that say? Thank you to the crowd who came to look, cheer and laugh. Thank you to the Motorcycle Section that ran the event. Finally, a big thanks to Debbie Butler for donating and presenting the Ross Butler Memorial Cup. Ross started this event and enjoyed it a lot. CHILDREN’S CHRISTMAS PICNIC SUNDAY 19 DECEMBER 2021 FROM 10.00 AM

(ENTRIES CLOSE 21 NOVEMBER)

As an alternative, we are planning to hold the picnic at December’s OCBC event on Sunday 19 December. More details in December’s Hub, but in the meantime, please send in your children’s/grandchildren’s details to Amanda. (See below) The Branch would like to provide a small present at the Christmas picnic to all financial members’ children and grandchildren up to the age of ten years. Swap Meet Report Sorry to have to be the bearer of bad news again, but I guess the news was not only predictable, but has now already probably got pretty well around the general membership. Unfortunately we’ve had to postpone Swap Meet 2021 again, and our new dates are now Friday 11th, Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th February. It was not an easy decision, but once all of the information regarding Covid restrictions, vaccination rates, the new “traffic light” system, and the need for vaccination certificates was assembled and analysed, it was clear that we were highly unlikely to be free to run the event at the end of November. Underlying the decision was a reply to an email we had sent to the Covid Response email address, in which we spelled out exactly how the event would be run, and pointing out contradictions in the Level 2 rules, asking them if the event fell within the definition of being able to run with an unlimited number of people present. A reply was received two weeks later from the Office of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, which told us it didn’t, and that we were unable to run the event under Level 2 restrictions. With the next Cabinet decision on a move from Level 2 and the introduction of the new traffic light system not due until 29th November, plus it being clear that the South Island was not going to reach the required double-vax rate of 90% by the end of November, there was no point perusing the 26th to 28th November dates. So, sorry everyone – just keep sorting out your items for disposal, and saving your dollars for February now. If you have put signs out around your neighbourhood we will try and have yet another overlay for the dates available for you by Noggin night. If not the November one, then definitely the December one. We’ll also keep the duties rosters going, and we may even need a few more helpers now – particularly if we’re required to check vaccination certificates at the entrances to the grounds. That will be a fun job, but then we are all double vaxed aren’t we?? Colin Hey 29

All British Day Report This year’s All British Day was kept low-key. Another Covid casualty was the Amberley Rock’n’Wheels event, which was going to be our finish destination this year. Because of the ongoing Covid Level 2 restrictions, the Rock’n’Wheels organisers decided to postpone the event to 12th December, which does not suit our calendar. So with a need to try and keep the All British Day attendees to hopefully no more than 100 people, it was not promoted outside of our branch, and instead we made the day a leisurely run to Greendale Reserve, about a 40km run from Cutler Park. Leaving our monthly OCBC event at around 11.00am, a route was plotted through West Melton, Aylesbury and Charing Cross and on to Greendale. Around 50 cars took part, and what a beautiful place Greendale Reserve proved to be, with plenty of shelter from a light NW wind, lots of green mowed grounds to relax in, and plenty of sunshine to enjoy as well. A great variety of cars attended too, including a beautiful and elegant 1950’s? Rolls Royce, a stunning E-Type and other Jaguars, and even a handful of Minis. A relaxing and easy run in the country on a warm and sunny day, finishing at a pleasant location with good friends and like-minded enthusiasts sure takes a lot of beating! Colin

(Lots of British cars this month. I’ll find some American ones at the Vintage Rally - Ed.) 30

Homestead Run Yes, this event is proceeding, but with numerous changes to dates of our other events, planning is running a bit behind schedule so as we go to press the final arrangements for the 2 or possibly 3 homesteads we’re visiting are still being made. The Homestead Run will begin at the November OCBC in the club grounds on Sunday 21 November. There will be a registration desk set up there, so you can make up your mind as late as that morning if you want to take part in the run. No pre-registration is required this year. You will need to bring a picnic lunch and your own chairs (or picnic rug), and the entry fee will be $20 per car, which will admit the car, the driver and one passenger to the run and to the homesteads we visit. Additional adults will be $10 each, and children still at school will be free. Tickets and route instructions will be issued as you register, and it will be run wet or fine. We will be departing the club grounds at 10.45 am sharp, so please arrive no later than 10.15 to ensure we can get everyone registered and ready to go. For any enquiries, please contact Katryna Shaw.

VOG REPORT Velosolex Owners Group

Spring weather is sure fickle eh!! Once again we had to delay our monthly run by a week due to unseemly weather on Tuesday 12th, but the 19th turned out to be a fabulous day for the “Gang” to hit the roads. This month we headed over to the Preston Downs area for our start from Marshlands Domain. An interesting ride around the streets of Queenspark, Burwood and Brighton with VOG 1 taking the lead trying to ensure none of the 10 riders went astray which is always quite a mission when you have to contend with traffic lights, stop and giveway signs and always remembering that not all bikes are as “fast” as some so it’s a matter of trying to keep the “speed” down. One of our riders Grant Lomax found that his “supercharged” machine kept clogging up and not performing at it’s peak due to the slow speed, this was remedied when we got to Rockinghorse Road where Grant was able to open up the throttle and give the motor a good blow through. A short stop was made at New Brighton beach by the newish hot pools to stretch the legs and to enjoy the lovely calm day without any of the normal Nor’easterly wind that blows down there. We even took a stroll out on the pier – what great views there were on the day right up to the Kaikoura ranges to the north and to Sumner to our right. It was then back on the road to continue down Marine Parade to The VOG Bikers. Rockinghorse Road – Not a sight for the faint hearted blimey that’s a marathon 33

ride at 25-30km/h fortunately we didn’t have a headwind – phew. Another short stop was made at the end of Rockinghorse where we couldn’t get over the amount of new homes that had been built down that road, they’re obviously not concerned about “global warming” and the rising waters. It was then off to our lunch stop at the “One Good Horse Turf Hotel” – great food and plenty of yap and great fellowship. Another successful VOG run enjoyed by all thanks to Paul Bailey for organising the route. Royce VOG1
