Alvaro Bautista
‘I’m looking forward to fighting in REV’IT! leathers’ For the 2010 MotoGP season, REV’IT! is teaming up with Rizla Suzuki rider Alvaro Bautista to sponsor him at the World Championship. As with LCR Honda rider Randy de Puniet (REV’IT!’s other sponsored racer), this mutually beneficial partnership should help Alvaro perform at his best in his first MotoGP, while showcasing high-quality REV’IT! gear to the world. Alvaro Bautista is no stranger to the GP. In 2002 he made his Grand Prix debut, starting out in 125cc and then moving up to 250cc, and scoring many podium finishes and victories in both classes. Last year Alvaro finished fourth in the 250cc championship. He knew it was time for him to take it to the next level, and match his skills with the best racers in the world. With REV’IT! providing him with high-quality, professional-level MotoGP gear, Alvaro will be competing alongside his official Rizla Suzuki MotoGP teammates. On his decision on which team to go with, he says, ‘It was very important for me to have the opportunity to work directly with a factory team. The Rizla Suzuki MotoGP team was the one that could offer this to me, so I decided to work with them.’ When asked how he feels for 2010, Alvaro said, ‘I am very excited about the upcoming season. It will be a whole new experience: new bike, new team, new championship. At this moment I am working out a lot. The bike has more power and also weighs more, so I need to be in good condition.’ As Alvaro works to prepare his body and mind in every way possible, REV’IT! is taking care of his gear, with equipment that has been crash-tested in the MotoGP and honed for performance and protection. ‘Like me,’ Alvaro says, ‘REV’IT! is learning and improving all the time. I am very much looking forward to be fighting for the championship in my REV’IT! leathers.’«

Behind the scenes A peek inside the pit Have you ever wondered what kind of team Randy de Puniet relies on to prepare him for his best performance in races? Supporting Randy is the complete LCR Honda MotoGP staff: 22 people, 14 of whom are always present at the track, each performing his own, very specific task. In addition to the team manager and the HRC supervisor engineer, there is a chief engineer and three motorbike technicians. They prepare Randy’s bike optimally for racing. Because electronics play a very important role in the adjustment of the bike nowadays, the technical team has one person whose sole responsibility is data recording. Likewise, the choice of the right tyres can be crucial, so the team has another professional whose sole responsibility is the tyres. Finally, the team has its own Bridgestone technician.
Data Recording Every MotoGP bike has a computer unit for engine management control. This unit is equipped with a high-performance spec processor, which regulates fuel injection, ignition, traction control, wheelie control, launch control, engine brake management, fuel consumption, data-recording software, and the E.C.U. (Electronic Control Unit).
Tyres
Bridgestone Bridgestone radial tyres are available for dry and wet conditions. For each race weekend, the team has a fixed number of slick tyres for dry conditions: 4 front soft and 4 front hard; and 6 rear soft and 6 rear hard. The soft tyres can be recognized by a white line. For wet conditions, there are 4 front and 4 rear tyres available, for better traction. A racing tyre has an average durability of just 120 km, which highlights the importance of using the right tyres and changing them frequently.
002
Before a race the tyres are pre-warmed to 110˚ C. Considering that the asphalt temperature can be as high as 60˚ C, the average temperature of a front tyre can reach 60 to 90˚ C during a typical race. For a rear tyre, the average temperature can get as high as 100 to 140˚ C.
LCR HONDA team clothing When you check out the LCR Honda pit on an average racing day, you’ll see a lot of people wearing the official REV’IT! LCR team clothing. REV’IT! designed and produced this professional apparel line, which consists of t-shirts, blouses, trousers, bodywarmers, caps, vests, and jackets.
Fuel consumption The mechanical aspects of motor racing and bike preparation haven’t changed that much over the years. The telemetrics, however, responsible for fuel injection, have become a very important part. The LCR Honda runs on ELF racing fuel (104 octane, unleaded). The tank has a capacity of 21 liters, and the fuel can be cooled to -15˚ C, compared to the air temperature.
One fast bike With a bike that weighs only 148 kg and has 210 horsepower, you can imagine the forces that a rider has to control. Here are some impressive figures: Maximum speed: over 330 km/h Acceleration 0 – 100 km/h: 2,15 sec Acceleration 0 -150 km/h: 3,65 sec Deceleration 330 – 90 km/h: less than 4 sec

Behind the scenes
• Podium for Randy de Puniet in 2009: 3rd place in Donington
LCR Honda MotoGP Team: more determined than ever Since they began in 1996, the LCR Honda Team and their founder Lucio Cecchinello have racked up the wins in three different categories at the Motorcycle World Championship. They boast 72 podium finishes, including 21 victories. They are well into a successful nine-year collaboration with Honda HRC, and a five-year partnership with the French racing star Randy de Puniet, who closed the 2009 season in the premier class (in the 11th overall position). The team’s reputation, professionalism, and hunger for victory keep them working with the world’s top racers and technical experts. But as Lucio and the LCR Team come up on their 15th year in the Championship, they’re backed by more than just hard numbers: they’ve got the long view. They have the supreme confidence that experience brings, well into their second decade as a team. Heading into the 2010 season, Lucio Cecchinello and the LCR Team are armed with expertise and more determination than ever – the kind that help riders like Randy de Puniet ride world-class races. With another bright MotoGP season ahead, Lucio tells us about the championship team he’s built.
004
• The team will remain the same in 2010
REVZINE > Like every MotoGP season, 2009 had intense highs and lows. What stands out about 2009 in your mind?
• Since 2004 Lucio Cecchinello has managed the LCR Team full-time
Lucio Checchinello interview REVZINE > How did the LCR Team come together, and what were some of the most memorable moments of its earlier years? Lucio Cecchinello: In 1996, I decided to start a new adventure by setting up my own organization, where I could be both rider and manager. In 1998 the LCR team enjoyed its first successes, and in 2001 I finished the championship in fourth place, riding an Aprilia 125cc. After that, the awards started to pour in: Alex De Angelis earned his first world championship podium, and in the quarter-litre class Casey Stoner marked his world championship debut, along with David Checa. By the end of 2003, the three LCR riders had taken everyone by surprise: 16 podiums, six victories, and six pole positions. Every win was memorable. The following year Randy de Puniet earned the bronze medal in the 250cc class. In 2005 the LCR team
Lucio Cecchinello: Thanks to the new bike and the new Bridgestone tyres, Randy could solve the front feeling problems he suffered in 2008. This helped him a lot riding the bike. That’s why he crashed only few times last year. Then in 2008 he was a not a great performer at the start, but things are much better now. I think that his personal trainer Yves Demaria (former Motocross world champion) played an important role in taking care of Randy throughout the season; thanks to his support Randy has been mentally stronger and more determined. But among all these positive things there are also the bad ones. In my opinion, the worst one was Randy’s left ankle fracture in the summer break, immediately after Donington GP’s excellent third place. Everybody on the team did their best to manage this trouble, but, as a former rider, I can easily say that racing with seven screws inserted in the ankle is extremely difficult! Apart from the fracture the only flaw in Randy’s riding style remains his performance on used tyres. He is still not capable at using them in the proper way, especially in exits from the corners. He must be quicker, and we are going to help him with that, starting from the winter test. REVZINE > As you and the LCR Honda MotoGP team head into 2010, how are you feeling? Lucio Cecchinello: I am very confident of the following season! First of all, we will ride on the Honda RC212V 2010 factory spec from the first race, and the squad will remain exactly the same. I honestly think that the team is a like an orchestra: the more you play together the more you get a perfect tune! That’s why I wanted to continue the project we began with Randy in 2008. Definitely next year we would like to be the first independent team in the ranking. «
Lucio Cecchinello, on Randy de Puniet: I have spent 22 years of my life on the circuits worldwide, and 15 years riding a motorcycle. I believe I can judge a rider. Randy Is talented, and he is fast. He has defeated riders like Pedrosa, Dovizioso, Elias, etc., and he has been on the podium 18 times. Technically, he has grown impressively. We must continue to work closely together, because I am sure that the MotoGP podium is within his reach. And he has proved it.
earned the Runner-Up World Championship award in the same class – the team’s best result to date, thanks to Stoner, riding the Aprilia, along with Locatelli. In 2006, Stoner earned for the team its first pole position and first podium in the queen category, before handing the Honda RC212V torch to Carlos Checa, who scored 14th place. In 2009 we opened our fourth MotoGP season with Randy, who scored the 11th final position aboard the Honda RC212V.

Randy in Depth
REV’IT!’s MotoGP rider Randy de Puniet talks about his life, his frustrations and goals in fourteen questions
006
01 What did life for young Randy
de Puniet look like? Tell us a bit about your family. ‘I have a sister and a brother. My father was a motorcycle racer in the French championship. He had a lot of podiums, doing the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the Bol d’Or too. That’s why I decided that I wanted to be a racer as well. My father was a fan of Randy Mamola and that’s where I got my name from.’ ‘When I was three years old my father gave me a small motocross bike. At first it was just fun, but after that I did races. I competed against guys like David Vuillemin and Sebastien Tortelli. They were better than me and to be honest, I was too small. So I waited until I could go road racing. I still like motocross as a hobby and it is a good way to keep fit.’
02
After motocross came scooters, the Cagiva Mito Cup and eventually you won the French 125 championship in 1998. Did you have any idea what your racing future should be like? ‘Oh no. I had always thought that I’d do something related to sports. I played football with Paris Saint-Germain, but I gave that up when I started doing the Cagiva Mito Cup. When I started that in 1996 my target was to be in Grand
be a real job for me. I thought I was capable of getting good results, maybe even winning races and finally make it to MotoGP. In 2002, the first race of the year in Japan, I was on a private bike and I was second on the grid. Then, on Saturday night, it started to rain a lot. I just couldn’t sleep, because I was sure I could be on the podium in the dry, but I didn’t know what I’d be able to do in the wet. But I finished third, behind two wild card riders, and I was leading the championship after the second race. I’d been fast during the winter tests, but that was something I had not expected. I signed with a team in December 2001, but they found a rider with money and I was out. We ended up racing for Campetella. Nobody wanted to race there, but we had a good year with two podiums and a pole. For 2003 I signed with Lucio Cecchinello’s team and all winter I was fastest during the tests. I finished on the podium a couple of times and then in Barcelona, one of my favorite circuits, I won my first race, starting from pole. That was one of the best moments of my life. I had a great battle with Fonsi Nieto. Unfortunately we had some technical problems in the middle of the season and I was fourth in the championship. Without those problems I could have done better. I’d crashed a couple of times and those crashes were my fault. I knew that if I wanted to be a
Dani (Pedrosa) overtook me. I was very disappointed. I led the MotoGP race in 2007 and in the end I crashed. But it was a very good memory. There is always more pressure on you at your home GP and all the people are watching you. I always give my maximum at every race, also in Le Mans, even if it is not the best track in the world. But the atmosphere is very good and it’s nice to hear the people shouting when you pass.’
05
You made a surprise move of switching to the Kawasaki MotoGP team in 2006. Why did you switch instead of trying to be world champion on a 250? ‘I tried that in 2005 and I was on a factory team with Sebastian Porto. On paper everything looked good, but in the end we both had a bad season. I only had three podiums and one win. I was not so happy. My manager started working on finding a place in MotoGP. Kawasaki gave me the possibility. It was a difficult season, the last year on the 990s. The bike was so difficult to control. Especially for a young rider like me. I had some good qualifying practices, but I also crashed heavily in Le Mans and I broke three vertebrae in my spine. I don’t remember anything about the crash, but getting back to a good level wasn’t easy. The bike was very aggressive and the electronics were not perfect. When I
In 1998 I watched the races on TV and in 1999 I was on the grid with the best riders in the world. I had reached my first target.
Prix. I knew it was going to be hard work and I did not know if I had what it took to get there. But I always knew that my father was behind me. I cost him a lot of money… He drove the truck, he prepared the bike and he was always on the lookout for sponsors. My first full time year in GPs was 1999. That was a great moment for me. But my bike was not very fast and that is always difficult in 125. Still, that year was not too bad for me. My father stayed with me in GPs throughout the 2000 season as well. Our lives were so different and it was impossible to continue after that. Now he visits me at the races and he’s happy for me. But it’s not that he’s giving me any more advice nowadays!’
03 In 2001 you moved to 250. A
lot of things had changed since your Typhoon Cup scooter days. ‘So many things! When I was racing that scooter I was fourteen; I was a child. In the 250s I started to think that this could

world champion I should stop crashing. That’s why I was fast and consistent in the first part of the 2004 season. I had seven races and seven podiums. And then I don’t know what happened, but I had some bad races. It could have been in my head, maybe the extra pressure. When I recovered it was too late. It is very hard for a rider, when you know that you can be on the podium and it just does not happen. I started off the year with the idea of winning or getting podium finishes. And then being fifth or so was very disappointing. Maybe I was too young, but that’s life.’
04
The French GP must be very important for you. You’ve been on the podium several times on a 250, but you’ve never won the race. What does that do to you? ‘I have been on the podium four times. Especially my last podium in 2005 was after an incredible race. Two laps before the finish I made a small mistake and
had my first crash in Malaysia during the winter test I thought, “Wow, this bike is fast…”.’
06
But a year later you got on the podium in Motegi. ‘I think 2007 was one of my best seasons in MotoGP. When I rode the new 800cc bike during a test in Malaysia I stopped after two laps and asked the Japanese engineers what had happened to the bike, because it was very slow. But they just said that it was an 800… We broke a lot of engines during these two days of testing and maybe I did forty laps. I was very disappointed and I did a lot of thinking during the winter, because of the bike being so slow and unreliable. But Kawasaki worked very hard and that’s why I got the podium in Motegi and I was able to do some good races, especially at the end of the year, like in Malaysia. I finished fourth, very close to the winner, and Valentino finished behind me. I think that was my best race in MotoGP, better
007

than the podium in Motegi. I raced with Stoner, Pedrosa and Melandri and at the end of the race Rossi was coming back. But the podium in Motegi was a great moment as well. Still, I was a bit disappointed too, because I made two mistakes during the race, losing about twenty seconds. And at the finish I was
07
You talked about crashing a bit. You’ve also had crashes in the first lap, sometimes not because of your own fault. What does crashing in the first lap mean to you? ‘When you crash in your first lap, that is very bad, because you don’t learn
08
Last year, after your podium in Donington, you had a motocross accident and you broke your ankle – in a time that you were getting better. How frustrating was that? ‘I was frustrated… I had decided to change my life during the winter and
2008 was a bad season year for me with a lot of crashes and in the end I lost confidence. I did not know what to do to stop the crashing and the problems I was having. I decided to change my way of working and I started to work with (former motocross world champion) Yves Demaria as my personal trainer. That was good and it is always important to work with people who know the sport and who know about bikes.
eight seconds behind Capirossi. It could have been my first win in MotoGP.’ ‘I don’t know if the people at Kawasaki didn’t believe in me. I had some crashes in the beginning of the season, but the end of the year was good and I always qualified at least on the second row. I don’t know why, but they wanted to wait with renewing my contract. I think I did a good job developing the bike, mostly on my own. I didn’t want to wait until September or October, for my plan was to continue in MotoGP. My manager talked to Lucio and I decided to sign with him again. That was like a dream; going back to Lucio and being on a Honda with Michelins.’
008
anything. It’s also very disappointing for all the people in the team. But even if a crash is not your own fault, the result is the same: you have zero points. You will have lost the work of a weekend. Whenever I crash I want to get back on the bike as soon as possible. But it’s also important to know why you crashed. So you don’t make the same mistake again. It is not easy to get back on the bike immediately and make a good lap time again, but you have to turn a switch. Afterwards you can analyze the problem. You have to be confident and then you can do what you want. Even if you lose maybe five percent of your confidence, you’re not fast anymore, you’re not concentrated and you start making mistakes.’
everything was working well. After nine or ten GPs I was seventh in the championship. We had a summer break then and I decided to train for a week and have a week off. Then unfortunately I had the accident. I knew that I’d missed a good opportunity to be at the front then. I had an operation and twelve days later I was on the bike, with seven screws in my ankle. I finished tenth in Brno. It was good, but it was so difficult. I race a go kart and I do motocross and enduro during the season; it’s something that I have been doing for years. Last year I got the injury. I could say it was bad luck, but that’s life. I think I’m mentally stronger than before, but after the crash it was very difficult to find my level again. For three races I could hardly use my left leg. Except for the Malaysian GP I finished all the races
after the injury, but it still was not enough to keep my place in the championship. That’s why I was disappointed.’
11
What about your way of preparing for a race. Do you have certain rituals? ‘Not really. I wake up at eight o’clock and do my warm up at ten. After that I have some briefings with my team and I eat at twelve. I also watch the 125 race on TV and the first lap of the 250s. Forty-five minutes before the start of the race I do my warm up on my bicycle in my motor home for fifteen minutes. Then I’m ready and I go to the box. I can feel the pressure building up. It’s not that I’m nervous, but I’m concentrated. I listen to my iPod and I watch TV. I also think about the race, especially the first lap and the first corner.’
Could you relax during the winter break? ‘Because I had an operation to take the screws out of my ankle this year the break was not so good. But normally when I finish the season I do some sports, just for fun, and go on holiday during Christmas. In January I start up my physical training for the season again, to be strong for the tests in February and March and the first race. It’s possible not to think about racing during the winter. But when you start training again, the thinking starts again as well. I can feel my body react differently and more relaxed off season. It’s a matter of less stress and less pressure. When the season starts you don’t have much time to be relaxed, and maybe I should try and relax a little more during the season this year.’

09
Would you like to trade places with guys like Rossi, Lorenzo, Stoner and Pedrosa? They have great bikes, but they are always in the center of attention. ‘For me they are the four best riders in the world, and for me to beat them in normal conditions is almost impossible. Maybe once or twice. But in special conditions you can be there. That’s why I want to be consistent. Last year my target was to be in the top ten every race; this year it’s top eight. If I were to end the season fifth in the championship, I won’t say it will be the same as a world championship title, but you can’t do better than that, because those four guys are the best and they have the best bikes. It would be nice to be on the same bike one year and fight with them. I try to improve whenever I can. At tracks where grip is not too good I have problems. Whether it’s the setting of the bike or my riding style I don’t know, but that’s where we need to improve. I lost too many points at the end of the race last year. In Australia I was riding sixth, but when the tire dropped I lost three places. And in Valencia I was sixth and finished eleventh. For me it was impossible to control the bike after halfway. I think we can improve that by working on the traction control system.’

Do you think about life after racing already? ‘Not so much yet, because I hope to stay in MotoGP for a long time. After that we’ll see. I don’t know whether after that I’ll switch to Superbikes. That also depends on my motivation, but for now I don’t think about the future a lot. Sure, sometime in the future I would like a family and some children, but for me that’s still too far away now.’
13
Is there something you spend a lot of money on, besides racing? ‘I like cars. I need to stop buying cars, because in the end I’ll have too many! I have a Ferrari that I’m trying to sell now, but I also have a BMW M3 and an Audi Q5. The Audi is better for the roads where I’m living. I live in the mountains and during the winter driving a Ferrari there is not so easy.’
14
Last question. Do you think there is a possibility that we will see Randy de Puniet and REV’IT! on the podium sometime this year? ‘That certainly is my target. And I would like it to be first place. It’s my goal to win a MotoGP race and to be world champion. But before you’re world champion you will have to win a race first.’«

MotoGP The Victory, Excellerator, Triton and Jerez When the REV’IT! R&D team set out to design the 2010 line, they aimed to make gear that could withstand every situation their customers might throw at it. This meant setting the toughest possible product specifications, to go above and beyond what average non-professional motorcyclists would need – whether they were everyday riders, track-day riders, or serious sports riders. To find the most demanding conditions possible, there is only one place to look: the MotoGP. As the world’s premier motorcycling championship, MotoGP defines an extreme riding situation. On purpose-built racing prototypes deemed too dangerous for the public (forget about street legal), these elite racers need gear that performs and protects at the very highest level. From this comes the REV’IT! design philosophy: if a product is good enough for a MotoGP racer, then it will definitely provide REV’IT! customers with the ultimate in safety, comfort, and performance. In 2008 REV’IT! entered into its first MotoGP sponsorship, with racing star Randy de Puniet. During that year Randy crashed a record 24 times. Thanks to his gear, however, he escaped without a single severe injury. With results like these, there might not seem much room for improvement – but REV’IT! isn’t known for settling. The combination of the new Victory one-piece suit with the Excellerator undersuit is a perfect example of how REV’IT! is constantly making improvements to its professional-level gear, which work in synergy for superior performance. Developed with the feedback of Randy de Puniet, the Victory and Excellerator offer unprecedented quality and safety to the public consumer market. Let’s take a closer look at how REV’IT! made their MotoGP-inspired vision a reality.»

Victory one-piece suit: a new challenge With the Victory, REV’IT! has produced a new one-piece suit for the track day racer and the serious sports rider that has the same exact safety level as suits worn by MotoGP competitors. Through two full years of MotoGP experience, their R&D Team thoroughly evaluated the used, abused, and often-crashed racing suits worn by the professional racers; they also collaborated with top riders to get their feedback and make improvements on earlier models of REV’IT! suits. Illustrated here are the Victory’s key features for keeping REV’IT! customers safe and comfortable as they go after their best performance. The Victory features a new and improved knee construction, which is highly preshaped and padded. The knee piece has also been moved slightly toward the outside of the leg, improving not only its ergonomic design and comfort, but also the protection for

the knee cap. Specially designed for racers in high-performance situations, these protectors improve comfort even further with new padding between the shin and slider. These knee sliders are the ultimate in safety and ergonomics. Adding to the comfort of the Victory are full-length Kevlar stretch panels. Kevlar combines ultimate durability and protection with unparalleled flexibility and comfort, providing riders with the excellent freedom of movement they need to maintain optimal race positioning on the bike. Simultaneously, the ultra-strong Kevlar’s durable abrasion-resistance provides professional-level protection in a crash. In terms of ventilation and temperature control, the Victory has three key features. First, laser-perforated ventilation panels have been precision-made to provide air flow through the material,
without compromising its integrity and abrasion-protection. This creates a balance of comfort and ventilation during a race, and total safety in an impact. Second, the removable aero cool 3D mesh lining further improves the ventilation through the suit. It features extra integrated lines to wick moisture away from the body, keeping a rider cool and comfortable under extreme conditions. Third, moisture-managing materials at the groin and underarms provide extra functionality in areas of the body that are likely to overheat in less advanced one-piece suits. All of these features work together to minimize a rider’s distractions and focus solely on performance. Finally, the Victory features an easy-entry calf zipper, placed specifically to allow the rider to put the suit on and take it off easily. This cuts down on preparation and transition times, and eliminates the need for assistance from others when getting ready to race. All of the Victory’s parts come together to help you achieve your personal best – linking this suit to Victory in more than name alone.
Excellerator undersuit: skin performance Naturally, the active protection that comes from a suit’s build quality, materials, and other protective elements will save you from damaging your skin in a crash. Nonetheless, another essential – and often underestimated – form of protection for high-performance motorcycling is the so-called passive safety aspect. This refers to any feature of a rider’s gear that relates to comfort and fit. For sports riders, comfort that minimizes distractions is crucial. Being able to focus purely on the track and on performance is what, in the end, can make the difference between winning and losing. If you’ve ever done a track day in hot weather conditions, you know that, after a couple of laps, you start to heat up and sweat heavily in your suit. Most riders simply wear their undershorts and a t-shirt under their one-piece suit. This is a mistake made by amateur and professional riders alike. The optimal solution is simple: a layer under your suit that can quickly transport hot air away from your bare skin and wick moisture away before it has the chance to condense. This helps keep your body temperature constant, so you can concentrate on your performance instead of perspiration.
Triton rain jacket Another essential piece of gear for professional racers is the rain jacket, for staying dry on a wet day at the track. Worn by Randy de Puniet during the 2009 MotoGP season, the REV’IT! Triton shields the seams and perforations of a rider’s leathers, to prevent them from getting soaked. The transparent design leaves racing leathers visible – essential for MotoGP – with a snug, flexible fit that preserves the crucial freedom of movement that helps riders like Randy end the day on the podium.»
REV’IT! developed the aptly named Excellerator undersuit for just this purpose. This base layer product is specifically designed to work in synergy with a one-piece racing suit, such as the Victory, to keep the rider cool and comfortable. In addition to offering the highest level of moisture management, the Excellerator is constructed according to the REV’IT! 3D design concept of Engineered skin: stitching seams have been relocated to areas without pressure points, to eliminate the feeling of irritating stitches at your shoulders, elbows, hips, or knees. The suit is ultra-thin and easy to step into, made of four-way stretch material for maximal ergonomic comfort and convenience. This makes putting the Excellerator on and taking it off supremely easy, and a great solution for staying cool and competitive. REV’IT! offers a wide range of mid- and base layer products for the tour, tour-sportive, and sports rider. Check out www.revit.eu to view the complete line.

MotoGP Inside the development of the Jerez Glove REVZINE sat down with Jasper den Dekker, senior productdesigner for REV’IT!, to talk about the development of the Jerez glove and the company’s constant quest to take race-proven products to the next level.
REVZINE > What was the motivation behind the development of the new Jerez glove?
practical issues. Still, we refined our safety and fitting standards to make them even tougher.
Jasper den Dekker: For the 2009 season, we set out to develop a highly protective and comfortable race glove that would perform perfectly under the demanding conditions of the MotoGP and satisfy the needs of the everyday rider. Our reasoning was: ‘If this glove can withstand a crash during a MotoGP race, it will do the job for all customers.’ We worked in close collaboration with Randy de Puniet during development, because we wanted the exact same glove that Randy wears during his races to be available for the consumer market. Specifically, we wanted a race glove that was highly protective and lightweight, with a stylish, superb fit. That in itself is difficult to achieve, because aesthetic concerns often get compromised by
REVZINE > The whole design sounds like a challenge, given the different concerns of professional racers versus consumers. Can you take us through your development process?
014
JDD: Development began in May 2008. First, the product development team and I had to do a thorough analysis of gloves Randy had crashed in. By working closely with Randy to hear his input, as well as examining video footage of the crashes, we were able to determine which areas on the hand and wrist are most likely to suffer during a crash. From this, we set the design brief.
REVZINE > What did you learn from your analysis? JDD: It showed us that the finger joints and knuckles are most prone to injury. Most often a crash begins in the corners, when a tire loses its grip on the tarmac and creates a side-slide of the rider and the bike. In such a crash, the little-finger side, palm, and knuckles of the hand are likely to hit the tarmac first. It is essential that the rider’s protective equipment be able to slide, in order to convert the force of the impact into less harmful abrasion-energy. We determined that the knuckles, finger joints, and wrists have to be protected against both impact and sliding, while the palm and little-finger side of the hand must be protected primarily against sliding.
protectors. In order to get a perfect fitting shape, zero restriction of movement, and superior impact reduction, we used a 3D CAD computer program. This helped the team to simulate the behavior of different designs of protector, in the event of crash impact and abrasion.
REVZINE > What was your strategy for developing this kind of multi-faceted protection? JDD: My team and I had to expand our materials knowledge. We searched for a good sliding material with flexibility, which could also be injection-moulded to create an impactreduction structure. When we arrived at TPU (or thermoplastic polyurethane) plastic material, we knew we had found the answer. TPU is lightweight, available in different levels of hardness, perfectly suited to injection-moulding, and has excellent sliding ability. But we weren’t satisfied yet. The results of the crash analysis had revealed that the wrist and knuckle area are at greatest risk of damage – so we wanted the impact reduction to be improved even further in those areas, for maximum protection. REVZINE > It sounds like the design became more and more complex as the process evolved. What did you and your team come up with for that extra protection? JDD: We hit upon the perfect solution with a 1 mm thick aluminum top layer for the wrists and knuckles. The combination of the aluminum with the TPU created a slightly flexible, lightweight protector that could also be injection-molded, to fulfill our ergonomic needs for the glove. In an impact situation, the aluminum deforms to absorb energy. Underneath, the honeycomb-structured, injection-molded TPU divides the forces over a larger area, to lessen the impact at any one specific point. For this, there are two main advantages to the relative softness of aluminum: first, because aluminum is soft and lightweight, it will not fragment into sharp pieces during severe impact. Second, aluminum in the right alloy will absorb much more energy during sliding, without sticking to the tarmac. This creates an optimal balance between impact absorption and sliding capacity. REVZINE > With all this focus on protection, how did that affect the ergonomic design? JDD: It provided a crucial foundation. Once we determined the hand areas that needed protection, and the optimal materials for that, we were able to move on to the specific design of the
REVZINE | #02 spring-summer 2010
• Ergonomic design of the Jerez in 3D CAD
REVZINE > Your development of the protective materials was an involved process. Did you explore the materials for the fit of the glove as extensively? JDD: Yes, we did. Once we had the protection materials in place, we did another survey to find the best fabrics for the fit. In this, a couple of parameters are important: the purpose of the glove, and the position of the hand that must be sustained. The specific usage of the Jerez is race-oriented. This means that the hand and wrist are bent into a race position, and the rider needs total freedom of movement. Randy had told us he wanted comfort inside the fingers of the glove. We took his input, combined it with our research that ultra-strong Kevlar thread can withstand a great deal of abrasion, and came up with Kevlar stitching on the outside of the fingers. The fabric’s strength gave us freedom to move the seams, creating a superior feel inside the glove. REVZINE > That sounds like an optimal marriage of safety and ergonomics. Did the team encounter any challenges in balancing the protection of the Jerez with its fit? JDD: Absolutely. Because we wanted the Jerez to be a consumer glove, we had to develop different protector sizes to fit the hands of different riders. So, the development team looked into a survey on the sizes and shapes of hands from all over the world. After entering the survey data into the 3D CAD program, we concluded
015
that, with the right ergonomic curvature, we could develop the full size range by using three different sizes of knuckle protectors and two sizes of palm sliders. Simultaneously, the patterned parts of the glove, primarily made of leather, were designed to keep the protective elements in the right places and ensure a perfect fit for every size. REVZINE > This multi-layered development process seems so specific to the Jerez, with all its twists and turns. How does this creation fit into the company’s overall design ethos? JDD: The whole development process of the Jerez embodies the REV’IT! Engineered Skin design strategy. Our team’s 3D approach resulted in patterned parts and protectors that fit the anatomical structure of the hand, offering the best combination of protection and fit. Plus, the materials we used to keep the main TPU protectors in place are all of the highest quality. We use kangaroo leather on the palm to provide the rider with the highest level of feel, without losing safety. Aside from its superb abrasion-resistance, kangaroo leather has a memory. Over time, the glove molds itself to the shape of the rider’s hand, becoming an engineered skin of its own.
REVZINE > So you had a good sample of the protectors to work from. But what did you do for a trial run of the gloves themselves, before actual production began? JDD: Once we had the laser-sintered nylon protectors, we glued them into mock-up gloves and tested their fit on a group of ‘idealsized’ hands (which exactly fit the pre-determined sizes). One of our testers was Randy. Actually, he turned out to be size smalland-a-half. This meant that, in fact, we couldn’t use him on our testing panel to verify the ergonomic size range. We did, however, need his experience and comments on our design, so we custom-made a glove for him. Once we had Randy’s comments and the outcome of all the fitting sessions, the team made some small changes in the original design of the protectors. As the exact positions of all the protectors within the different sizes were determined, the look and feel of the glove became clearer.
REVZINE > With protection and ergonomics covered, what was next in building the Jerez? JDD: The next level was bringing all of the elements together into a final glove design. With our design brief in mind, along with the 3D design of the protectors and sliders, we set about creating a range of mock-up samples in different sizes, in order to test the feel, freedom of movement, ergonomics, and look of the glove. To avoid the excessive costs of multiple injection moulds, the 3D CAD designs were sampled through a 3D laser sintering technique (SLS). This method uses a laser to melt nylon powder together, in order to translate the 3D computer model into a physical one. REVZINE > What is it like to see your theoretical design become a tangible reality? JDD: It is always exciting to see the computer design become a real, physical model. Although the laser-sintered nylon model has different physical features, compared to the final TPU protector, the ergonomic qualities as well as the look are perfect to work with as a representation.
•Jerez fitting sample: The laser-sintered nylon protectors are glued into mock-up gloves and tested for their fit.
REVZINE > Once you had the perfect fit for every customer’s size, what else did you need? JDD: Besides a perfect fit, the protection had to be tested on the final glove. But as we got to the level of making the injection moulds, in order to produce the protectors, we discovered that manufacturing a 1 mm thick aluminum shell on top of the honeycomb-structured TPU protector presented a challenge. Luckily, we managed to find some companies in Italy that specialize in this state-of-the-art process, giving us the main

knuckle protector and wrist protector that we envisioned. REVZINE > Would you take us through that state-of-theart production process? JDD: Briefly this is what happens: First, the aluminum shells are pressed, cut into the correct shape, and anodized to give them improved abrasion resistance. These parts are then placed in a mould where the TPU over molding will take place. Holes in the aluminum shell protectors function as reference points, to ensure that the aluminum is precisely aligned with the mould. Then, the TPU plastic is melted and injected under high pressure into the closed mould, which contains the aluminum shell protector. After it has cooled, the mould is opened and the finished protector is ejected. To finalize the look, a print is stamped on each one. REVZINE > From start to finish, how long did the development process take?
right balance between protection and freedom of movement. Considering that he holds 210 horsepower with his right hand, we take that as high praise for the glove. Feel is everything for Randy, and with his stamp of approval, we are extremely proud of the Jerez. REVZINE > REVzine: So what does the future hold for the REV’IT! development team? JDD: We realize that product development is a process that never ends. We still receive every crashed Jerez glove from Randy, in order to review and, if necessary, improve the design. As of yet, the crashed gloves have held no surprises for us. They have all been damaged exactly in the places that we developed superior protection for. This glove can withstand a crash during a MotoGP race. We are completely confident that the Jerez will satisfy our customers, whatever their riding style may be.«
JDD: It took nearly seven months of development before the first gloves could be produced and tested. Our colleagues in the marketing department named it the Jerez race glove, a name that is a fitting tribute to the glove’s race-inspired birth. REVZINE >What kind of emotions did you and the design team have when you were waiting to see the first Jerez samples, fully assembled? JDD: Our team had overcome many challenges during the process, and we were anxious to receive the samples. Of course, we had concentrated on fit, ergonomics, and performance under computer-simulated crashes. We knew from the lasersintering process how the protectors looked, and we had a good idea of the overall feel of the Jerez glove. Still, we had very high expectations. We would only be satisfied if the glove lived up to them. As soon as we tried the first samples, we knew that our refusal to compromise had worked. The Jerez felt like engineered skin. We had achieved the vision of the initial design brief, by creating a lightweight, well-fitted, and highly protective glove. The only thing left to prove was the effectiveness of the protection. REVZINE > This must be where Randy de Puniet entered the picture again. JDD: Correct. The final step was Randy’s testing of the Jerez glove, under the punishing conditions in the tests and races of the 2009 MotoGP season. In his opinion the Jerez showed the

In an economy where sales of new bikes have dropped dramatically, there’s one category of motorcycle that has not only bucked the trend, but actually grown in popularity: so-called naked bikes. Also known as “street bikes” or “streetfighters,” naked bikes have minimal or no fairings. Stripped down to their fundamentals, these bikes emphasize functionality, performance, and ergonomics – a true appreciation of the motorcycle in its most basic form, with either a modern or retro style. Muscle bikes like the Ducati Monster attract attention wherever they go, with their exposed engines and raw displays of power. Of course, it’s the retro bikes that stir one’s imagination, with their tough, barebones design. They evoke a bygone age, like music from another room. Borne back to you on a wave of nostalgia comes the effortless fashion of the old days, when style and pleasure seemed a rider’s only concerns; this was the era of James Dean, burning cigarette hanging from his lips, in a white t-shirt, blue jeans, and no helmet. Retro bikes tell a story about who you are, and who you’d like to be. Your clothes should add to this effect. That’s where the new modern classics from REV’IT! come in. They have successfully redefined retro with gear made from a careful selection of soft leathers, textiles, and classic accents. Fashionably urban and great to wear on the bike as well as off, these pieces evoke the same panache of the classic café racers of the post-war years, while providing the full protection and function that modern riders demand. The CR design is a perfect example of this line’s versatility, available as a waterproof textile jacket and a leather jacket for men and women, as well as a leather one-piece suit design. This is clothing for the naked – and color for your story.«

Two guys, two girls, two bikes, 18 days and 4.621 miles. Those were the ingredients for a trip from downtown Manhattan, New York to Labrador, New Foundland and back again. The crew for this little Trans Lab adventure is your humble author on his KTM 950, my threemonth pregnant girlfriend Judiaann, and my riding partner and long-trip virgin Gino and his girlfriend Lauren, aboard an ill prepared HP2 BMW - the perfect touring mount. Âť Gregor Halenda
The adventure begins! I wanted an adventure and I’ve been told too many times to be careful what you wish for because you just may get it. On the first night we made it to Portland, but we did manage some drama so far in one short 330 mile day: I lost my credit card at our last gas stop and Gino ran out of gas while he was carrying an empty 2 gallon tank for emergencies. But we made it onto our first ferry Sunday morning. After 5 hours we made land and started down the road to Peggy’s cove our first night in Canada.
A very nice start After an afternoon on foggy coastal roads we set the GPS to “shortest” and it put us onto a really rough logging road. We almost skipped it, as the thought of dropping the bikes on a rocky, muddy and steep trail while loaded with luggage and our girlfriends seemed to be perhaps a good way to end the girl-boy sleeping arrangements. We took a chance and at the top of the hill it opened up and became a beautiful gravel road, giving us the first taste of adventure on the trip. Our fourth day had us riding from Guysborough up to Corney Brooke campground, and while we had all day to go 180 miles, it created a sense of laziness with the troops. We had a
leisurely breakfast and then a lunch and of course we couldn’t pass up going to the Glenora Distillery. We pulled into the campground 4 hours later than planned, to find it completely filled. There was one bike there, and luckily for us, Larry (Honda Shadow) had a prime spot on the edge of the cliff and we got to share his spot in return for dinner. The next day we woke to some absolutely beautiful weather and rode up and around the Cabot Trail. This is to Nova Scotia what Highway 1 is to California - a stunning road that hugs the cliffs over the other ocean. This leisurely day ended with a late afternoon rendezvous with our first overnight ferry: the blank ferry.
What a trail! When we arrive in Argentia we set off in search of the infamous Newfoundland “rail trail.” Luckily a local leads us to the trail entrance. Holy cow - this is some narrow trail. Gino and I ride single track all the time but we do it on dirt bikes - not two up with luggage and girlfriends! I was certain we’d drop the bikes, as the trail is loose crushed rock with some round rocks about the size of grapefruits, which are a real bitch. The first few hundred meters were sketchy but as we got the feel for the big bikes on the loose stone we relaxed and let the bars dance in our hands while the front wheel wandered in the gravel. Oh, and water - did I mention the water?
’..perhaps the best way to ensure an adventure is to not plan a trip in any way shape or form’ - Gregor Halenda, preparing
024
Huge puddles where you couldn’t be sure how deep they were. Since the trail was a bit whooped we learned the best way to handle it was for us to stand as a couple. The girls got a very fast lesson in the technique of riding whoops with your legs, pushing the bike down into the bottom and absorbing as it bucks up. There was no way to go fast enough to skim them, as the bikes were just too big and heavy, so about 20-25mph was about the fastest we could go. It was one of the most beautiful trails I’ve ever ridden and made the entire trip to Newfoundland completely worth it.
Camp site of your dreams The next day we headed to Twillingate. After looking for camping we were pointed to a city park that they’d quit maintaining. It was free game: camp anywhere you want - there’s no services but no one will bother you. Sounded perfect. Gino saw a steep rutted 4x4 track going up a hill and we gunned it up. At the top we found the sort of camp site that you imagine in your dreams; on the edge of a 200 foot cliff, overlooking an island and the setting sun, with no one else for as far as the eye could see. Gino and I did the he-man fire thing and we wrapped potatoes in foil and buried them in the fire while we grilled steaks. This was by far the best meal of the trip.
Icebergs The next day we paid the price as we rode through a solid day of cold rain. We managed to find a great B&B for our last night in Newfoundland and had a good time with a moose call the owner shared with us. Ironically, the next day we saw several moose, so the call must have worked. A few hours later we rolled into the ferry terminal in Saint Barbe for the short ferry to Labrador. After about 50 miles the road went from pavement to dirt and we were finally on the road we’d heard so much about. Gino and I have ridden sand and gravel, but putting the two together makes for an altogether new experience. Not really a good one either. We started sort of slow and picked up speed to 45 or so, but the bikes, mine especially with the smaller wheels, just wallowed in the gravel. The road lacks the firm base of a typical dirt road and goes from soft to very soft with high gravel ridges running back and forth. When your tire goes into one, the bike starts to tuck. At one point Judiaann and I had a huge tank slapper that I barely got under control before we went off the road. I was holding the bars so tight, but after a few miles I found that relaxing my grip and letting the bars wag helped. Riding
We were worried that we wouldn’t make it back to the motel for dinner, but Keith said that his sister owned the motel and his mom was the cook, so dinner would be waiting for us when we got back. We’ve been more than a little lucky on this trip, but we’ve also opened ourselves up to meeting people, and we’ve found them to be extremely open, generous and friendly.
We are getting the hang of it The next day dawned nice and it took a while to pack because loading our bikes this morning brought a group of locals out to chat with us about our trip. I didn’t give Mary’s Harbour much thought when I planned the trip, I just wanted to split up our first big dirt road day, but it turned out to be another highlight and perhaps the friendliest town we’ve encountered all trip. Keith took us to his uncles store where they opened up the only gas pump for us. We filled up and hit the road to Cartwright and our last ferry. Yesterday was gravel and sand in a soupy cocktail but today we added washboard to the cocktail which would studder the bike right into the gravel but we adjusted.
We made good time and as we approached Cartwright and the ferry it was pouring rain and we decided to be New Yorkers and rode around the line of cars and trucks and right into the ferry. But the crew was very understanding. Once on board we lucked into the last cabin on the ship. This was huge as it meant we would be able to sleep and arrive fresh and rested for our first true day of the Trans Lab.
A perfect day in Goose Bay After unloading the ferry we decided to head into town for breakfast and as we stopped at the obligatory “Welcome to Happy Valley Goose Bay” sign a fellow pulls over; “Hi there! I saw you guys pull in and I just wanted to introduce myself: I’m Leo the mayor of Goose Bay-Happy Valley.” I kid you not. We were met by the mayor as we came into town. Leo suggested a place for breakfast which was delicious and while packing up I noticed yet another missing bolt -my bike had been shedding bolts all trip and it was the same pannier mount that I’d tightened before but I guess I needed Loctite.
We discovered the interesting fact that Newfoundland is one half hour ahead of Nova Scotia which is one hour ahead of NYC. Never heard of a half hour before but it certainly suites the place.
on soft terrain is like riding a horse: you can’t tell the horse where to put its hooves, but you can gently guide it where you want and let it find its own way. The big bikes are just the same. We settled into a pace of 60mph which was the magic speed - fast enough that your speed carried you through the soft stuff and slow enough that you weren’t skimming too bad. We rolled into Mary’s Harbour around 6:30pm, and a fellow came up to us and asked where we’d come from and where we were going. We told him how we’d come down to the harbour to look for icebergs. This guy, Keith, said he’d take us out for a better look on one of his family’s fishing boats. That is how we finally ticked off another site on our list - to see an iceberg! Keith explained that when he was growing up icebergs were the only source of ice for the whole village. People would take giant chunks home in boats and it would keep food cold all summer. Crazy.
REVZINE | #02 spring-summer 2010
Then we got 40mph cross winds. All of that mixed together was nerve wracking and each gust would push the bike into the gravel where it would then plow with the bars going slack in your hands and you’d be at the winds mercy. Stressful. Gino and I were sometimes riding side by side so as to not eat each others dust and I noticed his slow leaking front tire was down to around 24lbs or so and I realized it was doing a really good job on the gravel and a light went off. My tires were set to 36 and 40 in the back -what was I thinking? We pulled over and lowered the pressure to 24 front and 28 rear. But not before we were swarmed by black flies. Holy cow! After lowering the pressure the bikes handled perfect. The road improved and Gino and I got into a serious groove and finally clicked the bikes into sixth gear. We felt completely comfortable on the road for the first time.
The first hardware store had no metric and while considering our options a couple on a Honda Rukus pulled up. They offered to take us to a hardware store that would have what we needed. I finally bought thread locking compound -the only thing they sell is permanent strength which should tell you something about Labrador. Since Gino and I had been thread locking my bike, replacing fasteners and tightening the steering head bearings, it became too late to make Churchill Falls by dusk so we decided to spend the night in Goose Bay -besides, the mayor asked us to stay. That night Gino and I pulled the panniers and bags and followed made a tour of the local trails. So that was our day 11 -completely unexpected and absolutely perfect. »

‘.. Pierre is a genius and his shop is filled with all manner of machine tools. We know he’ll solve our problem’ - Labrador City, Day 13
Gravel and a broken subframe On day 12 we were dragging -the road was getting to us finally and we were slow to get going plus this morning my rear tire was flat with a nail. It was noon before we hit the actual Trans Labrador highway and it’s a big lonely stretch of road. The first 30k of the Trans Lab is actually paved but after that the road is different than from Mary’s Harbour to Cartwright. Better for sure in some ways as it’s more consistent but it is loose. The gravel seems larger and sometimes deeper but it’s pretty consistent. The biggest problem, is the graders. Graders are death! Everyone we meet has some story about a bike that crosses a ridge of gravel and crashes. We’ve also heard rumor of a 70 year old guy on a GS who crashed last week and, depending on who you talk to, is either fine with no broken bones or dead. We’re going with the former. Halfway to Churchill Falls I noticed that Gino’s tail section was flopping around and when we stopped we found his subframe broken. We emptied the spare gas into the tank to get rid of that weight and then contemplated what to do with his luggage. Luckily a Jeep from Goosebay stopped and gladly took Gino’s
026
stuff ahead to the Churchill Falls gas station. We saddled up and took off with Lauren riding as close to Gino as possible to keep weight off the back. In Churchill Falls we found the gear leaning on the side of the gas station and before we even picked we see Ryan who we’d met on the last ferry. We tell him of our troubles and he says he’ll find a welder. After an hour, Ryan takes us to his uncle where we remove the seat only to discover that it’s not the subframe but the sub subframe that’s broken and it’s made of aluminum which his uncle can’t weld. With no other option here in Churchill Falls we decide to sent Gino and Lauren’s bags forward with someone at the gas station and hope for the best.
The riding turned brutal Best though does not describe our next day which was, perhaps appropriately, our 13th on the road. It was by far the hardest day we’ve had and, by almost any account, the hardest day any of us have had in a long time. We were warned there would be construction but we weren’t prepared for how much. We also weren’t prepared for the trucks. Some would slow down but when they didn’t you were enveloped in a complete white out of dust and you would
float blindly in the cloud and pray nothing was coming the other way. Huge cross winds changed from left to right instantly and with no warning. The road was graded and incredibly loose and each gust pushed the bike sideways as if on a field of ball bearings. Gino and I both have a fair amount of experience but this was insane. Judiaann couldn’t stand as she was holding Gino’s gas and I was fighting the bike with every ounce of energy I had. I was standing, over the screen, and sawing the bars as the bike slid and bucked. Finally I couldn’t take it anymore -I needed her to stand with me so I could better muscle the bike as it slid. I signaled to Gino and we pulled over to empty the gas into his bike so he could take the tank and Judiaann could stand again. The wind was whipping up dust devils on the road and I turned my back for a second and my bike was blown off the sidestand. The only bright part of this was there were no black flies.
‘..nine plugs in this tire, a new personal best’ - On our way to Lab City, Day 13
In the morning we found my rear tire flat. We aired it up. After about 50 miles my tire was low so we filled it again -the plug seemed to be holding but 20 miles later it was flat again and the plug was leaking. I added two more plugs to the hole. 20 miles later my tire was flat again. I looked for another hole, I plugged this one and aired up again. And went flat. Aired up and went flat, aired up and went flat… Never imagined I would be riding with 9 plugs in one tire.
Flat tires and amazing people Like clockwork my tire went flat every 20 miles and like clockwork I’d find a new hole and plug it -it was almost comical but I was running out of plugs. Air up and go flat, air up and go flat, air up and go flat. All the while we’re fighting this horrendous crosswind and begging for this day to be over. Finally we stop for air again and the pump is doing nothing. I search for holes but this time I find a huge tear in the sidewall. I’ve
I know he’s lying to me and I don’t care so we keep going. For over an hour we crawl on the side of the road and into a rainstorm which seems to have no effect on the dust. I watch the GPS tick off the miles and can’t believe the tire is holding. The rain gets heavier but finally we come to pavement and, miraculously it turns out, Gino wasn’t lying -the tire still has air. We crawl on the shoulder into town and split at the light. Gino goes to find his bags and I go to get a room at the Two Seasons. Gino comes back with a kid who says he can take him to a welder who can Tig aluminum.
Pierre’s and see what he can do. After looking at my KTM he calls Gilles, the shop owner, who he thought might have some tires in his personal garage. Gilles finds a few tires in the trash but warns me it’s a worn out street tire. I ask if it has a delaminated tread and 9 plugs and he laughs. When we get to Gilles, he comes out with a TKC80 that came off his neighbors R1150GS. I didn’t think I could be happier over a worn out tire but just then Wayne Tinkler, the neighbor, pulls into his driveway and tells us he has a new front too so we can have the old one and Wayne won’t take any money for the tire.
It’s hard to explain Labrador. It’s big first and foremost and the houses all seem to be built like no one plans on really staying. There’s no brick for instance. The landscape is like a vast plain of tundra with short bushes and stunted scrub yet it’s all decidedly lush. never plugged a sidewall and don’t even know if it’s possible but what option do we have? As the tire fills I notice a bubble growing under the tread -the tire is delaminating and I realize we’re done. There’s no saving this anymore. After trying to flag down a passing pickup that doesn’t stop we decide we might as well just ride until the tire blows. It beats sitting. We crawl along at 20-25mph at the edge of the road and each time the bike plows and wallows in the soft shoulder I’m convinced the tire is flat. Gino keeps giving me the thumbs up but
REVZINE | #02 spring-summer 2010
As I meet Gino to go to the welder my tire is flat. I air up again and we drive to a small house and meet a small man named Pierre who speaks with a thick French Canadian accent. We explain our predicament and he invites us back to his shop where we take the HP2 apart in the rain. As he surveys Gino’s subframe we ask him if there’s a motorcycle shop in town. Does it have tires for a big bike like ours? He listens patiently and then dials his phone and hands it to me. On the other end is John the manager of the local shop. He has no tires to fit my bike but he’s happy to come on down to
The guys tell us that flats are a big problem this year and even construction trucks with 10 ply tires are getting destroyed. The crews are putting down “glass rock” which is incredibly sharp and the graders turn this all up and the points puncture tires until the road has been tamped down by traffic. My tire is proof. We head back to Pierre’s where Gino and Pierre are finishing up the fabrication. It’s almost 10 and we agree to finish in the morning so Pierre can have some dinner. Outside the shop my tire is flat again and

‘..and the bridges all have wooden decks which is sort of strange ’ - Relais Gabriel, Day 14
I air up for what I hope is the last time and I follow John to the motorcycle shop. Gino learns that John is an endurance snowmachine racer and has won the Cain’s Quest twice -arguably the hardest snowmachine race in the world. Impressive. John opens the shop and we set about putting the used knobbies on my rims and when I ask John what I owe him he says just the cost of mounting one tire. Despite it being midnight on his day off and the fact that he’s spent the last six hours helping us he won’t take any more than $20 despite my efforts to put more cash in his hand. The people here are just amazing.
Ghost town Friday Gino and I met up with Pierre and got the bike back together, while the girls loaded the bikes. The road after the Lab City was worlds different than before. It was still loose gravel but it was twisty and very hilly. If this was paved it would be a dream but the gravel is demanding. Not hard like yesterday but you needed to be careful as the gravel could sometimes pile up as much as 8-10 inches. In the middle of nowhere we hit 60 miles of perfect pavement that is a strange
028
sensation after so much rough road. There’s been a forest fire through here and the landscape is eerily beautiful. At the end of the pavement section we reached the ghost town of Gagnon which was built in the 60’s as a mining town. In the middle of nowhere and suddenly there’s sidewalks, curbs and a grassy central median which was the main street. The town was bulldozed in 1985 and all that remains is the sidewalks and sewer grates. We look around but the only residents are a ton of black flies despite the local roads still being listed on the GPS which is mildly unnerving. After getting back on gravel the road became wider but with massive hills and the dust got heavy. The scenery was really beautiful though. We reached Relais Gabriel and met two groups of adventure riders heading north. Relais Gabriel we’d heard had great food and rooms above the store -it sounded sort of quaint and fun but the reality is that the rooms are tiny with one cell-like window, are suffocatingly hot and share a tiny bathroom. The food, however, was very good and our mounting exhaustion means we sleep soundly despite the dorm atmosphere.
Pretty easy Saturday we wake to light rain and put the liners in. We get on the road at the crack of 11 (or 10 corrected to EST) and prepared for the last difficult section of the trip. We’d heard that there was deep and difficult sand for the last 60k and we kept being ready until we hit the pavement of Manic and realized that the only really difficult section was the one from Churchill Falls to Labrador and mostly due to the cross winds. This section was pretty easy. Once back on pavement we started to see Harley’s again which seemed to signal the end of the adventure. A friend, Brian Flanging, made campsite reservations with a view of the ocean for us at Bon-Désir and like any good friend he shows up with chocolate and scotch which endears him to us all the more. The only tough part of this day was flipping the burgers on our incredibly hot fire with the tire irons out of my tool kit but it got the job done. The next day had us rolling through traffic (traffic?!?!?) into Quebec which is a mix of both very old and very new but refreshingly cosmopolitan after Labrador. We luck into a great little place called Au Petite Hotel which turns out to be in the old part of the city tucked away in a small alley.
‘..we had to pose, to show the size of these tires’ - Relais Gabriel, Day 14
Last night on the road
We’re home
Let the adventure find you
Over crepes the next morning we’re already dreading coming back to the states and our daily grind but our goal now is to make it to the Ear Bar tomorrow night for the weekly motorcycle hang and have a celebratory beer and park our filthy bikes in the midst of all the butt jewelry that never leaves the city.
At our last gas stop before NYC we joke that we should ride right by NYC and down to Mexico -we’ve all dreamed of riding Baja and the girls have complained that they thought this trip would be harder and they want a bigger challenge.
The trip was magical, challenging and far better than we expected it could be. Newfoundland and Labrador are astonishing places and perhaps the last great adventures you can find on a motorcycle east of the Mississippi. As my father often said, “Places aren’t boring -people are.”
As we head south the temperature soars and for the first time in two weeks it suddenly is into the 90’s and we’re dying. I spy a hose at a garden center and we stop and douse ourselves completely which does the trick. At the border Judiaann and I get an agent that is more interested in hearing about our big KTM and what kind of off roading we did in Canada than about anything in our luggage and we’re through in minutes. We cruise back roads and at our last gas stop of the day pick up wine before we get to our friend Paul Clippers place. By now it’s dark and we don’t want to change our tinted visors so we leave them open and eat bugs. Finally we pull into Paul’s little country paradise and we all start in on the wine. It’s late but the dinner is fantastic and the company better. It’s a nice end for what is our last night on the road.
We try to take back roads but the closer we get the roads give way to strip malls and traffic lights. My cooling fan kicks on for the first time since the trail in Goose Bay. Traffic, heat and ugly chains just seemed to mushroom around us. It sucks. Finally we hit the top of Manhattan our city riding adrenaline kicks in and we start our familiar battle for lane space with the taxis. We pull up to the bar which is filled with bikes and are surprised to find a welcoming crew of friends waiting with a cold beer before we even got off the bikes and we’re both happy and sad to be home.
You don’t need to go to far east Russia or Argentina to find adventure, you just need to be open to allowing the adventure to find you which it surely will. We had a plan for the trip but we also knew when to just let it go out the window and roll with it and that’s, I think, what allowed us to see such amazing sights, ride such amazing roads and meet such fantastic people. The construction we rode through on the Trans Lab is the beginning of the end. They hope to have the whole thing paved within three years and when that’s done the place will be changed forever. If you’ve thought of taking this trip do it now while it’s still a big, empty place where anything can happen. The biggest regrets in life are the things we didn’t do but meant to. Get out there and ride it. Gino, Lauren, Judiaann and Gregor.

Summer Air When it’s really hot out on the road or track, and the reflected heat from the tarmac is almost unbearable, the last thing you want to do is put on conventional cold-weather leathers. You might feel like wearing flip-flops, cargo pants, a t-shirt, and an open-face helmet, just to stay cool. Don’t make this mistake.
030
Always protect yourself from head to toe, even when it’s hot. REV’IT! makes this easier with a whole range of protective summer gear, which gives you maximum airflow through your gear without skimping on safety. From boots to gloves, jackets and trousers; you name it – we’ve got it for both men and women. Plus, there are many versatile three- and four-season jackets and trousers in the REV’IT! line, which you can easily transform into hot-weather riding products by removing the separate layers.

The essence of refined, urban motorcycle wear is that it doesn’t appear, on first glance, to be anything but sleek and stylish apparel. The ROGUE jacket is a perfect example of this design philosophy. Beneath its extremely soft and supple leather, the Rogue has undercover toughness and functionality: its CE armour is practically invisible, offering safety without compromising on style. Available in black and camel, the Rogue is a classic design that fits into any urban wardrobe.

REV’IT! collection 2010
The 2010 REV’IT! collection is better than ever. Based on the feedback of experienced riders, our products have been tested and re-tested in our never-ending quest for superior quality. This is REV’IT!’s third year on the MotoGP scene. With LCR Honda MotoGP star Randy de Puniet as our sponsored rider, our learning curve has been steep. We have fine-tuned our gear to offer the wear-and-tear durability, safety, and comfort that professional riders demand. Our new race glove, the Jerez, comes from what we learned. With nearly a season of testing and crashing the Jerez, we have made serious improvements on the ergonomic safety of this race glove.

Push the limit | TT One Piece suit
We’ve also developed a whole new collection for the sports bike rider. We listened to our customers’ input and we are proud to present the improved safety and comfort of the Victory suit, featuring Engineered skin . With 40% more stretch capacity than other suits, the Victory’s material allows for greater freedom of movement, while comfort is maximized with better pre-shaping and increased airflow through the 3D mesh lining. ®
Adding to moisture management during rides is the Excellerator underlayer, which helps the sports rider perform in comfort. And for optimal racing on wet tracks, our Triton rain jacket is an exact replica of what our pro riders wear.

The best of both worlds | Phoenix Ladies’ Jacket
Meanwhile, our new CR collection was developed especially for the sportive rider who’s looking for a fashionable, retro style. With soft pull-up leather and polycotton fabrics, these products have a casual style that looks good on every rider, both in the city and on the racetrack. As always, REV’IT! is keeping an eye on trends in riding, and the number of scooter riders in bigger cities continues to grow; increased sales in our Urban collection reflect this trend. We respond now with an expanded selection for great urban style, with items like the Brighton, Bronx, and Rogue.

Serious adventure riders | Cayenne Pro Jacket
Feedback from our customers is vital in our constant innovations and improvements. REV’IT! has listened closely to our adventure riders, who are always striving for their best. What we heard was that their extreme riding is really pushing our adventure line to the limits: taking the Cayenne Pro and Off Track jackets and Desert glove into all kinds of climates and conditions, in every corner in the world. We knew it was time to learn from our adventure riders’ experiences and update what we can offer them. So REV’IT! is proud to unveil the newly improved Sand line. While keeping the products reasonably priced, we have made them lighter and easier to wear. Easily accessible cuff systems work with off-road boots and winter gloves, while a direct connection between the weatherproof membrane and the pants makes the rider less vulnerable to wind and rain. Our ventilation zippers are now heavier-duty for increased durability, but still lightweight enough for use in the desert. The improved Sand line is truly worthy of taking on an adventure. The 2010 collection will show how far REV’IT! has come, together with our customers. We hope you’re looking forward to the next leg of the journey as much as we are. Thanks for riding with us, The REV’IT! Team

MotoGP inspired The Engineered skin signature, found on almost every garment REV’IT! develops, indicates our commitment to safety, quality, and design. It is most prominent on our sportive leather styles, where the construction is clearly visible in the patterns on the arms, hips, and knees. When you look at suits like the VICTORY, REPLICA, and SILICA (shown below and on the right hand page), it is immediately apparent that they were designed on the basis of this truly unique design concept. Whereas the SILICA is one of the best entry-level, off-the-rack track suits available, the top-of-the-line VICTORY includes MotoGPinspired features that make use of the latest production techniques, innovative materials, and ergonomic features.

Push the limit When you’re pushing your limits at the race track, you need a leather suit with protection you can rely on. The REV’IT! TT one-piece is based on the fully customized suit that Honda LCR MotoGP rider Randy de Puniet wore during the 2008 season. This is the first REV’IT! suit that featured the newly developed elbow sliders, in addition to the 3D honeycomb shoulder parts. The slightly less pre-shaped TT jacket is derived from the TT one-piece suit, and made of the same A-grade cowhide, but with a fixed liner.

Retro redefined Naked bikes (a.k.a. street bikes or streetfighters) are among the most popular bikes of the moment. So when we thought about developing a clothing range to fit this trend, our mission was clear: to blend modern technology with retro style elements. We are proud to introduce the CR Collection. There’s the CR one-piece suit, which – despite its fashionable appearance – is 100% track-ready. The CR leather jackets are made of the softest, toughest leather available. They have a snug yet very comfortable feel, with protection and comfort enhanced with 3D-Prolife CE armor and a removable thermal body warmer. To complete the collection, the CR jacket is also available in a highly breathable, 100% waterproof textile version. Both the leather and textile versions of the CR jacket come in men’s and ladies’ styles (the latter featuring a sleek feminine fit).

Mix and match without end The GT jacket and trousers are some of the most celebrated tour sportive leather combos in our line. The feel of the Agostini leather, the superb fit, a sleek design; it all comes together wonderfully in these ageless styles. In response to popular demand, we’ve added the SILICA ladies’ jacket and GT ladies’ trousers, to offer the same level of quality to female motorcyclists. The great thing about these styles is that you can easily mix and match various colors and trousers to go with the GT and SILICA jackets. And with GT trousers available in various lengths, there is a perfect fit combination for everyone.

The Apollo project After setting the standard in terms of comfort and fit with the GT leather jacket and trousers, it wasn’t easy to come up with something new for the sport and tour sportive rider. We needed something totally different in design, yet ageless in its appearance. It took us two seasons to perfect a new signature design that we could use for both a leather and textile jacket, as well as a new model of leather trousers. What we came up with is the APOLLO leather jacket, and it’s a serious attention-getter. A short, sporty jacket, the APOLLO is made of extremely fine leather, with precision laser-perforation for ventilation and a unique look. Its large stretch panels offer a great fit, and it is fully equipped with CE-approved armour. The APOLLO keeps you safe, while changing conceptions about what kind of style is possible on a tour sportive bike. The best of both worlds Most summer riders prefer leathers to textiles – not only because leather is stronger than textile and thus safer, but also because of its comfortable feeling on the skin. The downside is that leather doesn’t ventilate well unless it’s fully perforated. Extensive perforation isn’t safe, however, because it compromises the protective properties of the leather (unless, of course, you use the laser-perforation technique – see VICTORY suit). So we’ve come up with a solution for spring, summer and fall: the PHOENIX jacket. Designed as a summer sports leather jacket, it offers a sportive fitting shape, along with 3D-Prolife CE armor. The jacket is equipped with a removable 3-layer membrane that offers 100% water and wind protection. Both the front and back panels are constructed of the strongest mesh material available on the market, so when the liner is removed, you’re left with a fully ventilated outer shell. The best trousers to match the PHOENIX jacket are the GEAR trousers (featuring the same design concept – see page 62), or the non-vented AURORA trousers.

All-weather sports performance Most waterproof textile jackets and trousers are developed for the touring rider. This means that they often have a more relaxed fitting shape, suited for an upright sitting position. Not the RAPTOR. The RAPTOR textile jacket and trousers are designed for the sport and tour sport rider who prefers the weather protection features of textile over the comfort and safety of leathers. This uncompromising, top-level design and pre-shaped sportive fit are especially great for commuting on a sportive bike at relatively high speed, when a snug fit is vital for keeping the suit waterproof – plus, the jacket and trousers can be easily zipped together, with the 360 degree round zipper. The RAPTOR set is also fully equipped with CE armor by Prolife and has removable thermo liners for warmer days. Rounding out the features of the RAPTOR jacket are the two lateral side straps, which create a cocoon of comfort.

draw back the front side of the collar, allowing air flow to cool the neck during warmer periods of the year without the annoying flapping of the loose collar.
VCS I panel Adjustable VCS panels provide optimum ventilation. Air flow through the jacket is nice on warmer days, but not as desirable in cold weather. With adjustable ventilation-panels, you can decide for yourself: they can be modified easily by folding back the flap, to allow full ventilation of the jacket.

Improved details take old favorites to a new level of design and functionality For Spring-Summer 2010 we are proud to introduce our new SAND jacket and trousers, which improve upon old adventure favorites, the OFF TRACK jacket and DAKAR trousers. The big differences are found in the multitude of small details that take the products to the next level. A new fore-arm zipper construction allows you to easily wear gloves underneath the cuff, while functioning as an arm vent as well. We’ve added a short connection zipper attached to the inside of the 3L removable membrane in order to secure the position of the membrane at the waist, plus water-barrier fabric panels that prevent water from soaking up the lower leg of the SAND trousers or into the jacket – plus many more features. If you liked the OFF TRACK and DAKAR, you are going to love the SAND.

Laminated reflection Reflection panels ensure excellent visibility at all angles, allowing the wearer to be seen from all directions. To offer a more sophisticated look, the reflection panels are welded to the fabric. This welding process also eliminates stitching seams, making the garments safer. VCS| zippers on fore-arms Our VCS zippers are located in strategic positions, providing excellent air flow to cool the body. At the fore-arms, two-way zippers offer dual functionality: the lower slider pulls up, so you can easily put your glove under the sleeve, while the upper slider pulls down for maximal air flow and cooling.
Membrane storage pocket This pocket gives you the opportunity to store the membrane in a safe way and keeps the membrane within reach to allow you to attach it as soon as you need it. detachable hydratex® | 3L membrane & detachable thermal liner Giving you the freedom to choose how you combine its 3 layers, this versatile jacket is perfect for all seasons. The detachable hydratex® membrane under the shell provides maximal waterproofing without compromising on breathability. The membrane is also extra-durable, thanks to protective tricot, laminated on each side. Completing the jacket’s construction is the thermal liner, which is also detachable. The result is optimal flexibility for year-round wear: when the weather demands it, wear the membrane plus thermal liner. When you need ventilation, just take one or both out.

Dual-comp protector TPU aluminium protector at cuff and knuckle. The dual-comp protector consists of a 3D, pre-shaped honeycomb structure of TPU material, topped by an aluminium high-impact shield, for ultimate sliding. SuperFabric technology is an advanced process that transforms ordinary fabrics into unique, highly protective materials. Multiple protective shields are applied close to each other within the fabric, but remain separate to allow maximum flexibility. underlying fabrics. SuperFabric is five times more abrasion-resistant than leather, with just half the weight.

Kevlar is one of the strongest materials available, woven from aramide and nylon fibres. The extremely tear- and abrasion-resistant material is ideally suited to use as an extra protective ®

WR100X This leather structure is constructed from microscopic fibrils, which are randomly intertwined to form fibre ®
bundles. Armortan encases these fibril bundles with microscopic, ceramic armour-plates, which are more resistant to abrasion. This increases the durability of the leather by preventing wear on contact surfaces and materials. The leather has also been processed specifically to improve breathability and overall comfort.
Dual-comp palm slider A new palm slider made of a durable and high abrasion resistant compound at the palm side of the glove. The palm slider makes sure that the glove slides in case the palm of the hand comes in contact with the asphalt and it prevents the glove from grabbing.
MotoGP inspired JEREZ glove The JEREZ is our top racing glove, designed with the input of MotoGP racer Randy de Puniet, to give our customers the same level of protection the professionals need for the most extreme riding conditions. The JEREZ combines premium-quality materials like kangaroo leather and Superfabric with great protective features, including a completely new range of dual compound hard parts, developed to provide protection for areas of the hand that are most likely to be injured in a crash: primary among these are the hard-shell knuckle and hard palm slider. MotoGP feedback also inspired the re-location of Kevlar stitching to the outside of the glove, giving these gloves the ultimate sensitivity and comfort that every racer demands – with the durability and safety that professionals depend on. If the JEREZ works at the MotoGP, it’ll work hard for you.

Gloves that keep you warm on every winter ride The GENIUS H2O and TEMPEST H2O are top-of-the-line winter gloves for the all-season rider. Goatskin gives the gloves a soft and comfortable feel, while the Schoeller® PCM® insulation keeps your hands in the temperature comfort zone. Extremely lightweight Exkin Air insulation adds warmth without bulk. The sleek GENIUS and the TEMPEST both feature top-quality armour, while Superfabric® on the knuckles, fingertips, and the back of the hand makes them even more abrasion-resistant in high-impact areas. There is one big difference: the cuff construction. The GENIUS H2O has a double cuff, while the TEMPEST H2O has a single cuff. A boot for all seasons REV’IT! boots travel to the far corners of the world, and experience every type of extreme weather and riding condition. If only they could talk, they could probably tell you more about endurance than their owners could. The APACHE H2O riding boot is a perfect example. It combines the functionality of a high-quality touring boot with a semi off-road sole. The anatomically designed footbed increases the wearability of the APACHE H2O boots, making them not only very comfortable for riding, but also easy to walk in. There is nothing else like this full-grain leather boot, which is perfect for adventure riders who spend hours on the road and enter up to medium level off-road territory. A great boot for ATV and quad riders as well. For off-road and touring, the APACHE H2O is what you’ve been looking for.

gravity backprotector
FPG020
Y Frame rigid The central Y shaped element of the Gravity covers the spinal area from waist to neck and provides the basic firmness of the back protector. Made of a specially formulated microcellular PU foam it retards impact but still flexes with the body for optimal protection.
Adjustable shoulder straps The shoulder straps that hold the protector gently in place can be adjusted to offer you the most comfortable fit. Double velcro adjustment The wide Velcro fastening waistband has a double closure to adjust it to your personal preferences. CE2 level The Gravity meets the stringent CE2 level specifications of the 89/686/EEC Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) directive on motorcyclists’ protective clothing – meaning that this protector holds the highest CE rating possible in Europe.
3D air mesh This knitted fabric with an open structure helps improve air flow over the rider’s skin, improving comfort under performance conditions.
Safety first From providing top-quality motorcycle gear to every level of rider – from the casual rider to MotoGP champions – REV’IT! has seen that total-body protection is essential for everyone. An especially vulnerable part can be the back. Because safety is our number one concern, we offer the ergonomic GRAVITY CE Level 2 back protector. The GRAVITY covers the spinal area from waist to neck, flexing with the body to provide optimal protection for street, track, and off-road riding. To optimize the back protector’s comfort, the GRAVITY has air channels for ventilation and adjustable shoulder straps that hold it gently in place.

The first layer of defense The Base Layer keeps the body dry and at a comfortable, constant temperature. This is vital, because, as you increase your activity level, you begin to perspire – and in order to avoid overheating in the summer or getting hypothermia in the winter, it is important to remove this perspiration from the body as quickly as possible. Base layer products are designed to do just that, with fibers that quickly absorb and wick moisture outward, where it can evaporate. Base layer products can be worn directly underneath motorcycle jackets, pants, or one-piece suits (both leather and breathable textile).

Climate control for the body The Mid Layer helps the body regulate its temperatures, by trapping body heat between the skin and the mid layer. This acts as a climate control – cooling the body when it is too hot and insulating when it is too cold. Mid layer products comprise three separate layers: an insulating fleece lining, a windproof and breathable membrane, and a comfortable outer shell. These three layers create one mid layer garment that optimally controls body temperature in moderate-to-cold conditions. Temperature regulation is further enhanced by wearing a base layer underneath.

Keep the heat inside The top of your head, the palms of your hands, and the soles of your feet: these three zones on your body are crucial for regulating your body temperature. As the easiest to cool, they lose body heat the most quickly, putting you at risk for hypothermia if you don’t have the right gear in cold weather. REV’IT! accessories keep especially vulnerable areas of the body in the temperate comfort zone. We offer a wide range of balaclavas, wind collars, and under gloves that all have excellent moisture management functionality, to keep you warm, dry, and protected from wind (and sometimes even rain).

Engineered foot protection Each riding situation demands a different kind of support and protection for the feet’s muscles and tendons. So REV’IT! has developed a range of innovative socks for specific uses: racing, endurance, summer touring or winter commuting. Each type of sock contains different materials to improve function. Comfort is always a priority, so all of our socks feature fabrics that quickly wick moisture away from the skin, as well as ventilation channels to whisk warm air from underneath the foot to the instep—keeping feet cool, dry, and comfortable. We reinforce the highly stressed toe and heel areas, to reduce wear and tear. That way, you keep your focus where it belongs: on your performance. Self-adjusting cuff Calf protector

REV’IT! RACING socks are specially developed for riders in extreme sports conditions, guaranteeing the best possible comfort and protection for the feet’s muscles and tendons. The complex padding system protects exactly those areas where impact and rubbing are likely to occur, and effectively reduces the chance of skin abrasions and pressure sores. The elasticized materials support the feet and reduce muscle fatigue when riding the track. Composition 61% polyamide,

Comfort inside your boots depends on the quality of your sock. When your feet sweat and your socks turn clammy and cold, even the best footwear can’t guarantee the comfort they promise.
