DRIFT like a girl

I
t’s no secret by now that I love featuring many awesome builds, but I especially love an awesome girl build! This 1986 Toyota Cressida belongs to one bad ass chick. Not only did Joanna Tiu build this awesome ride she also jumps in the driver seat and whips this thing around the track at drift events. Joanna was born and raised in Cebu, Philippines until age fourteen. She then moved to Seattle and then Las Vegas. She is twenty-two years old and studying Computer Science at UNLV. She says between work, school, and drifting she doesn’t know how she manages it all but that her love for drifting makes all the hard work worth it when she’s out on the track. Her love for cars started when she was very young. She would attend drag races on the weekends and she would often visit aftermarket shops because her god father would build cars. When she was around 18/19 years old she felt as if she could afford this hobby and seeing cool cars at car meets got her motivated to get into an older car, specifically a Toyota. JoJo bought the car from a lady here in Vegas that only drove it to Albertsons to get groceries and back home. It was completely stock but misfiring very badly when she bought it. JoJo said, “I’ve always been into Toyota’s specifically the older ones from the 70-80’s. They just have such a classic body style and I fell in love with the Cressida because of the boxy look and velour interior”. This must be why even with plenty of modifications her ride still has a very nostalgic classic look to it. Keeping the style pretty close to original she obviously had to add modifications to make it drift worthy, these include a JDM GX71 Front and Rear Bumpers, JDM GX71 Front Valence Chin Spoiler, JDM GX71 Cresta Quad Headlights and Grill, JDM GX71 Sideskirts, and JDM GX71 Pods/Rear Valence. The body of the car is also painted a maroon color that makes the overall vibe feel very era specific. The drivetrain consists of W58 transmission, Akina Motorsports Bellhousing, Quantum Auto Flywheel, and ACT Stage 4 – 6 Puck
Clutch. JoJo also put in work on the suspension of this thing, which we couldn’t expect anything less for a car that sees the track as often as hers! The suspension is comprised of BC Coilovers, Xcessive Manufacturing Steering Knuckles, Xcessive Manufacturing Lower Control Arms, Xcessive Manufacturing Tension Rods, Xcessive, Manufacturing Skid Plate, and Techno Toy Tuning Roll Center Adjusters. If these modifications weren’t enough the interior has some razzle dazzle itself including a wooden steering wheel, Jimmy Up Flower Shift Knob, Kenwood Flip-Out Radio, and of course one of my favorite things slide seat belts that are original! The interior also has cushion seats still. Joanna’s favorite part of the car is the engine swap because of all the hard work she and her boyfriend put into the swap. This is just a glimpse in to all the modifications that this car has done to it. JoJo told us, to our surprise, that there were no major setbacks while the build was in progress. Which for turning an old car into a drift ready car without any major setbacks is pretty awesome to me. At the end of all this crazy work, the entire build cost around fifteen-thousand dollars. Joanna’s plan for the future with the car are just to travel all over the US and hit up every track possible. She is hoping to hit up a new track on the West Coast hopefully either Musselman in AZ or PARC up in OR! She also hopes to retire this car from drifting because she loves it so much and knows that drift cars don’t last forever. She plans on building a mx83/jzx81 in the near future as the new drift car, so she can keep her Toyota Cressida forever. Until this happens, she will continue to take the car to her favorite racetrack Apple Valley Speedway. There is no denying this build is unique and fun. It was a pleasure featuring Jo Jo and her lady ride and I can’t wait to see her next build!

cruising hot rod Dean's '32 Ford Roadster and '98 Custom Chopper IMAGES AND WORDS ADRIAN MIRABAL
W
hen you hear 1932 Ford Roadster you think of a hot rod right away! If you are familiar with them at all you know that these builds come in all shapes and sizes. When Dean Sutton first showed us his ride we saw something that stood out about it, the car was pulling a trailer carrying a 1998 Custom Chopper all painted and setup to match the car! That was just the first thing to reel us in. Dean Sutton grew up in Vegas and currently works for the State of Nevada. He has two grown children and a wonderful Navy Veteran Wife. Dean got into cars because he wanted to find a way to spend more time with his dad. It was one of the many things they are both passionate about. He told us his dad is very important to him so the car is a tribute to him. Unfortunately Dean was in a bad car accident while working and he was placed on workers comp for 2 years. During that time he had to undergo back surgery and almost died due to complications. While recovering he knew he wanted to live the rest of his life to the fullest. He started searching for his dream car online. He finally found it at Gateway Classic Cars of Denver. It is the car he wanted since he was a kid. Dean says he remembers his dad taking him to car shows and he always loved that style of Roadster. He got the car about 2 years ago. It was not in bad shape but needed some work. He built the car to spend more time with his dad and for others to enjoy at car shows. He often lets people sit inside the car and on the bike for photos and to enjoy them. About a year ago the opportunity to buy the bike came up. After finding out that the bike was owned by Charlie C. Moore who passed away in 2013 he decided to buy it and restore it to proper condition and matched it up with the Roadster in his honor. Once you’re able to get a closer look you will notice a ton of things about the Roadster, Chopper pair. Dean said he wanted it to where every time you walk past you will find something new. As I walked around the setup taking photos that was exactly what happened. The Roadster is rocking a 283 engine all chromed. For suspension it has a coilover setup with rack and pinion front end. The body is a complete custom fiberglass setup with a tube frame. If you look at the body and paint job you will start to find some of those hidden things. The paint has pearl ghost flames, pearl moonshine jugs and revolvers designed by Ernie Hotchkiss at Hot Kiss Restorations. These are so tasteful and awesome it really blows you away. The interior also has its own share of hidden images. The interior was completely redone with custom seats and trunk made with Dean’s name, moonshine jugs and also flame embossing done by Wizard’s Custom Upholstery. The chopper is rocking a matching paint job and seat. We asked Dean what his favorite part of the builds was. He said “The flames and blue lights I have installed throughout both.” The car is rocking some blue glowing lights that give it a nice modern twist. You can find Dean and his 32 Roadster hanging at the Craig and Rancho car meet and other local shows. Dean has tons of future plans for his projects so be sure and keep an eye out and say hello if you see him!

T
he Las Vegas Motor Speedway is host to many events all year long. One event that is held there is the Vegas Drift event. This is a family friendly event where action is not in short supply. Built to perfection drift cars ripping it on the track, being up close and personal to the action, also being able to meet your local Vegas drifters sounds like a good time to me. We have attended quite a few of the Vegas Drift events in the last two years and they are always changing it up a bit. This particular one had a wet track for people to come out and get comfortable behind the wheel going on at the same time as the main track. I think one of my favorite things is just the wide range of experience levels out there doing the thing! Local sanctioned events like this give people the opportunity to have this type of fun in a save environment. Where else can you shred tires and drift for hours and hours and it is all legal? Be sure to check out Vegas Drift if you haven’t already!
circo massimo an evening of cars and culture WORDS Alexis solorzano IMAGES jim wiltse Circo Massimo is a high end car event held in Down Town Summerlin Mall. They fill the streets with an exotic collection of chariots. The event is sponsored by companies like Towbin Motorcars, Porsche, and Gaudin. So, it is safe to say that this event is really well put together. This car show has something for everyone from stock new model cars, to clean fully built classic cars, to my personal favorite wide body GTRS, and so much more in between you are sure to find something that is your style. It is held throughout Down Town Summerlin starting on the grassy area and dispersing through the streets. I personally enjoy the set up of this car show and it makes for a really cool vibe. You can grab food and drinks; find entertainment and everything else all in one place. I also really like this car show because as a family oriented business we like to support other events that are for people of all ages to enjoy. Circo Massimo is definitely an event that you will find people from all walks of life at. There were families in attendance, groups of guys, groups of women, and even people that were from different countries. This event also has a wide variety of vendors; they were not all automotive based. There were food vendors like a flavored popcorn stand, other stands selling gadgets, and a nice little bar where you could grab some drinks. I like this type of mix because car shows are for everyone and should be inclusive for all types of vendors. All these aspects rolled into one is what I think makes this event fun and enjoyable. If you have not made it out be sure to come out to the next one on August 29th and come by our booth and say hi!

I
n the past couple years Vegas has had a real come up in the sports world. We got a professional hockey team that brought us a lot of fun games and a sense of community. Then the Las Vegas valley got some of the biggest news in a while, we were going to become the new home of the Raider Nation! As work began on the stadium it was pretty obvious that fans in the valley are ready to represent their team and this awesome city. This is especially true for this unique build. Megan and Mike Hill are the proud owners and builders of this Raiders themed ride! Megan and Mike call Vegas home, they are a married couple with a Mom and Pop fabrication business focused on TIG welding. As the seasons change, they do general fabrication from shelving to exhaust as well. If they aren’t welding, you can find them testing out their work on the drag strip. They mentioned that racing is a fun way they can make sure their work is top notch because they build the bikes themselves. They weren’t always into bikes but an unfortunate event (stereo theft when they were into big trucks and stereos) steered them into their love for bikes. The bike is all raiders themed with the iconic silver and black color scheme plus the Raiders logo on every inch. Not one piece of the bike is left with out a touch of Raider and Vegas pride. Originally, this bike was bought to flip and had a salvaged title. It was then used by a family member who returned it back to Megan and Mike where it then became the awesome ride it is today. We asked them what the vision for the style of the bike was and they said, “The vision was to combine the Harley bagger wheel look with a sport bike chassis.” Which sounds unique and by the creativity of the entire bike I would say this was accomplished. The outside of the bike stands out of course because of the detailed Raiders themed design also because it has black chrome vinyl wrapped aluminum panels that give it a nice sleek look. On the shell of this bike are hand-formed Carbon Fiber fairings, and 3D printed plastic custom pieces which also happen to be the couple’s favorite part of the bike. Not only does this build catch the eye it has work put into the internal components as well. Starting with a custom aluminum fuel cell Megan’s Welder 6”over stock swingarm, stock font forks, and rounding it out with a 46 degree rake on the frame neck. If that’s not enough this rad ride also comes complete with hand cut 26” front wheel, Shinko Tire 18”x9” rear wheel and Avon Cobra tire. To top it off this bike has a rear-view camera with 4.3” monitor which I personal think is a cool touch. There is no denying this bike is crafted creatively with a lot of heart and unique design.
[ PHOTOS TAKEN AT THE NEW RAIDER STADIUM during construction ]
Not only does the build look unique but this couple told us that it had no setbacks during the build! Even going through two iterations before the final project came to be. A build that was flawless from start to finish, sounds like it was meant to be to me! We asked them what their future plans are for the bike and of course they said, “SEMA 2019!”. However, this couple’s ultimate goal is to get the bike in front of the Raiders’ organization to commission a second build. Which I personally hope happens for them because this build is the definition of pride for our wonderful city. So all our VAM readers lets send them good vibes for their dream to become fulfilled!
