SNWA rebate helping businesses switch from thirsty evaporative cooling systems

Businesses have long used evaporative cooling systems to keep indoor temperatures down, especially during the hot summer months.

But those thirsty systems use up a lot of water in the process – probably far more than most people might realize.

In fact, evaporative cooling systems rank as the second largest consumer of Colorado River water in the Las Vegas Valley behind only grass lawns, and make up about 10 percent of our region’s consumptive water use.

Converting those thirsty evaporative coolers to highefficiency hybrid systems, which combine dry and evaporative cooling, can slash water use by an average of 50 percent.

The Forum Shops at Caesars Palace recently made the switch, a move that will save a whopping 17 millions of gallons of water each year.

In Southern Nevada, where 90 percent of the water comes from the drought-stricken Colorado River, those savings can make an enormous impact when it comes to stretching our small sliver of the river even farther.

For businesses still on the fence about shelving their water-intensive cooling systems over cost concerns, there’s never been a better time to make the switch.

Businesses can receive a cash incentive of $475 per ton of cooling capacity converted through the hybrid cooling systems program. But properties that act quickly can more than double that rebate.

Through a federal grant, commercial and multifamily properties can receive an additional $550 per converted ton while the funding lasts, bringing the total cash incentive to $1,025 per ton. When the grant funding runs out, the incentive will revert to $475 per ton.

Converting from evaporative cooling to high-efficiency hybrid cooling systems will save The Forum Shops at Caesars Palace more than 17 million gallons of water each year.

There’s no annual cap on the WET incentive, and the rebate cannot exceed 50 percent of the conversion costs.

A WELCOME MESSAGE FROM CHAMBER PRESIDENT AND CEO

Even with all the glitz and glamour of our city, at its core, Las Vegas is still a small business town. And the Vegas Chamber is proud to be at the center of our business community, helping local businesses plug into the resources, connections, and information they need to succeed. Our purpose is to help employers and entrepreneurs prosper, create jobs, and drive a growing economy.

The cover of this edition of the magazine celebrates the many Chamber members nominated for the Vegas Chamber’s 2024 Business of the Year Awards. We are proud to pay tribute to the many companies, non-profits, and business leaders that bring excitement, innovation, and passion to our community.

Check out their stories and see why these award winners and nominees deserve to be celebrated.

This edition of our “Taking Care of Business” magazine also features important conversations with two members of Nevada’s Congressional delegation, Congresswoman Susie Lee and Congressman Stephen Horsford. I had the opportunity to sit down with both during our Washington, D.C. Fly-In to discuss several issues important to Nevada’s business community.

As we look ahead to next year, I encourage you to attend the Annual State of the Chamber and Board of Trustees Installation Luncheon on December 12, 2024. During the event, we will celebrate the accomplishments of this past year under the leadership of Chairwoman Betsy Fretwell and hear

what’s ahead from 2025 Chairwoman Janet Uthman. It is an event you don’t want to miss. I look forward to seeing you there.

Sincerely,

At Nevada State Bank, our business clients have direct access to our decision makers. Whether you’re looking for financing* to grow your business or insight on streamlining your accounts, we’ll work with you to help you make informed financial decisions about your business. LAS VEGAS NEWS

LVMPD PUBLIC SAFETY PREPAREDNESS WORKSHOP

Thank you to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) for hosting the Vegas Chamber and its members for the Public Safety workshop at the LVMPD “Action Room” in October. The workshop discussed public safety for the election and critical topics such as virtual threats, suspicious activity reporting, and continuity of operations planning.

During the seminar, current public safety threats were reviewed, focusing on both physical and online concerns affecting our community. With the increase in violence and threats becoming more common, it’s critical to address these issues to ensure public safety.

LVMPD emphasized the growing challenge of disinformation campaigns using AI and video manipulation, which can contribute to confusion and fear. The initial focus was how the Police Department were addressing potential threats stemming from the upcoming election. This year, they have handled over 1,000 threat assessments.

To improve preparedness, LVMPD is working with various departments to develop resource guides and enhance security in public spaces.

Vegas Chamber President & CEO Mary Beth Sewald expressed her appreciation for the information, stating, “Thank you to the police department, the Clark County Office of Emergency Management, the Fire Department, and all city departments who make Las Vegas a much safer city to live and work in, and for helping the business community in operations planning and preparation.”

NEVADA REPRESENTATIVES ADVOCATE FOR WORKFORCE AND IMMIGRATION REFORM AT VEGAS CHAMBER FLY-IN

During the Vegas Chamber’s Washington, D.C. Fly-In, Congresswoman Susie Lee (NV-03) and Congressman Steven Horsford (NV-04)joined addressed issues important to Nevada businesses.

Both Lee and Horsford sat down for interviews with Chamber President and CEO Mary Beth Sewald. Lee and Horsford underscored the state’s critical needs in immigration reform, workforce support, and economic policy. Each highlighted their commitment to tackling these issues through bipartisan efforts and legislative advocacy to bolster Nevada’s business community and economic future.

Susie Lee addressed the pressing need for comprehensive immigration reform through the bipartisan Dignity Act. She explained how the bill aims to secure the border, improve processing times, and establish pathways for legal immigration, especially for Dreamers and DACA recipients. “The most secure

border we could have is through comprehensive immigration reform,” Lee said, emphasizing that the legislation not only addresses national security concerns but also helps meet Nevada’s growing workforce demands.

Lee also spoke about Nevada’s critical workforce needs, particularly in education and mental health. Addressing teacher shortages, she called for increased investments in education, adding that current barriers prevent qualified professionals from joining Nevada’s mental health workforce. “We need to remove the obstacles that discourage talented individuals from entering the mental health field, making it easier to serve our communities,” she added.

Horsford highlighted his work in infrastructure and small business support. He acknowledged the importance of maintaining Nevada’s status as a global tourism hub by improving essential infrastructure,

including roads, highways, and the Las Vegas airport. Supporting small businesses remains a priority, with Horsford advocating for additional resources for women and veteran-owned startups, especially in light of Nevada’s high business formation rate.

As a member of the powerful Ways and Means Committee, Horsford has focused on equitable tax policy, affordable healthcare, and retirement incentives that directly benefit small businesses in Nevada. He also emphasized his role as Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, where he has led efforts to address economic opportunity and intergenerational wealth, including promoting diversity and inclusion initiatives in corporate America.

Lee and Horsford both acknowledged the importance of transitioning Nevada to renewable energy. They addressed how streamlined permitting processes, combined with protections for the environment, could

help Nevada harness its natural resources and grow sustainably. The state’s economic expansion depends on balancing needs with resource conservation, especially as demand for energy-efficient projects rises.

The collaborative effort between the Vegas Chamber and Nevada’s representatives in Washington reaffirms the Chamber’s commitment to advocating for Nevada’s business community and building strong, effective partnerships.

TIMPORTANCE OF U.S. NAVY TO OUR ECONOMY

Highlighted at the President’s Club Chair Luncheon

he Vegas Chamber celebrated Las Vegas Navy Week with a special President’s Club Chair Luncheon in October. Our members had the opportunity to hear from Rear Admiral Joaquin J. Martinez de Pinillos, Reserve Deputy, Director of Maritime Operations, U.S. Pacific Fleet. He shared insights on active engagement, collaboration, safeguarding national security, recruitment, information warfare, Navy medicine, and the importance of a supportive community.

The role of the naval fleet is significant, with 26% of jobs tied to global trade and 26% dependent

on exports. Additionally, 20% of U.S. agricultural products are sold overseas. The Navy plays a crucial role in ensuring safety through deterrence and, if necessary, engaging in conflict.

Chair luncheons provide an excellent opportunity for our Presindent’s Club members to connect with thought-leaders who are making a positive impact in our community.

Thank you to trustee Shaundell Newsome for his leadership on this event and his service to our country.

ANN BARNETT CEO

NEVADA CONTRACTORS ASSOCIATION

Q What services does your organization provide?

The Nevada Contractors Association represents more than 450 construction companies across the state. We provide a wide range of services designed to benefit our members, from business development opportunities to specialized training programs. As one industry with one voice, we work tirelessly to ensure our members’ interests are represented and their companies have the tools they need to thrive.

Q. What is the biggest challenge facing the construction industry now?

One of the biggest challenges facing the construction industry today is the labor shortage. As our industry grows, the demand for skilled workers is outpacing supply. We’re actively working with our contractors and industry partners to bridge this gap by promoting careers in construction and investing in workforce development programs. On a positive note, we’re seeing a lot of interest and enthusiasm, with more people recognizing the opportunities for highpaying careers in the industry and jumping at the chance to be a part of it!

Q.What or who inspired you to pursue the role you are in?

My inspiration comes from family, close friends, and mentors who have consistently encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone and strive for growth. Their belief in my potential and their support has driven me to build my career and ultimately become the first woman to lead the Nevada Contractors Association. I’m truly honored to be in this role and deeply grateful to those who have been a significant part of my journey.

Q. Why do you like the Executive Women’s Council (EWC)?

I love the EWC because it’s both engaging and inspiring! Their amazing events cover important and relevant topics, while also offering opportunities to learn, grow, and connect with others. It’s a fantastic opportunity to learn, meet, and collaborate with other incredible women who are also striving to make a positive impact in their fields.

Q. What is the best way for people to reach you?

The best way to reach me is by email at ann@ nvcontractors.org, or feel free to stop by our office anytime! And if you see me at events or meetings, don’t hesitate to say hi—I’m always happy to connect.

AUSTRALIAN CONSULATE-GENERAL PROMOTES ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY WITH NEVADA LEADERS

One opportunity to grow the Nevada economy is through global trade. The Vegas Chamber is engaged in forming relationships with leaders from other countries in order to foster more trade and business connections.

In October, Australian Consulate-General in Los Angeles Tanya Bennett visited with Vegas Chamber and Nevada leaders about building closer ties between Australia and our state.

Consulate-General Bennett met with Vegas Chamber President and CEO Mary Beth Sewald. She also met with Governor Joe Lombardo, U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez-Masto, Congresswoman Susie Lee, and Lt. Governor Stavros Anthony. These discussions centered on economic opportunity, especially several industries of mutual interest including clean energy, critical minerals, AI, biotech, sports, and medical technology.

Another topic of conversation is the exciting opportunities ahead with the National Rugby League’s 5-year commitment to play season openers in Las Vegas with teams from Australia and New Zealand.

NEW EMPLOYER RETIREMENT SAVING PLAN MANDATE FOR NEVADANS

Nevada will soon become the latest state to mandate that most businesses provide a retirement plan for their employees.

SB 305, which was passed in the 2023 legislative session, will become effective July 1, 2025. It requires most employers to provide a retirement savings plan for their employees. This may include enrolling them in a state-sponsored plan or a chamber of commerce 401(k) plan :

• Employers with an existing retirement program are exempt.

• Employers with less than five employees are exempt.

• Employers in business for less than 36 months are exempt.

• Employees are automatically enrolled by default at 120 days of employment.

• Employees may elect to opt-out.

Details surrounding the employer penalties have not yet been outlined.

A 401(k) plan may be appropriate over the State Plan for many businesses, including but not limited to Tax Credits of up to $5,000, higher contribution limits, actively managed investment options, pretax contributions, loan options, and employer contributions.

The Vegas Chamber offers members a prenegotiated retirement plan that satisfies the SB 305 mandate. There is currently no start-up cost and only $100 per quarter to the employer and $4 per month per employee with a balance. There are other low fees to consider. For more information, visit vegaschamber.com/401k or call the Caldera Wealth team at (702) 616-2000.

The Chamber will be keeping members informed as more details regarding this mandate become available.

No more than 100 employees received compensation of $5,000 or more in the preceding year, and the employer didn’t offer a plan covering substantially the same employees during the previous three tax years.

Securities and advisory services are offered through LPL Financial, a Registered Investment Advisor, FINRA/SIPC.

This information was developed as a general educational guide, but it is not intended as authoritative guidance or tax or legal advice. Each plan has unique requirements, and you should consult your administrator, attorney, or tax advisor for guidance on your specific situation. The advisor does not assure that a plan sponsor will be in compliance with ERISA regulations by using the information provided.

For more information, visit vegaschamber.com/401k or call the Caldera Wealth team at (702) 616-2000.

The Vegas Chamber offers a 401(k) plan to help our members access more affordable and robust 401(k) investment options. Benefits of providing a 401(k) for employers include:

· Attract and Retain Talent

· Valuable Tax Credits/Deductions

· Incentivize Employee Performance with Profit-Sharing Contributions

LEADERSHIP ADVANCE ENROLLMENT OPEN: AFFORDABLE WAY TO INVEST IN YOUR LEADERSHIP TALENT

Every organization – large and small - needs great leaders at all levels to be successful –leaders who can inspire teams to succeed and reach goals, effectively communicate, instill company values, and strategically solve problems. Yet, most businesses neglect providing the training necessary to help the people they put in leadership roles hone the skills necessary to be effective and successful.

That’s why the Leadership Advance program is so powerful. The Leadership Advance program, offered through the Vegas Chamber’s Leadership Foundation, is tailored to professionals at all levels who want to enhance their leadership skills so they can transform themselves into more effective managers and leaders. It is an affordable way for organizations to provide high quality leadership training.

Through Leadership Advance, organizations develop a pipeline of in-house leadership talent that will drive growth in their operations. It is a cost-effective way to invest in professional growth of their leaders to help them gain the skills they need to succeed.

“Joining Leadership Advance has been one of the best experiences of my career. I highly recommend this program whether you are new to leadership or have been in a leadership role for some time,” said Nicole Shelton of Nevada State Bank. During the 5-month DISC-based program, class members will earn 3.6 CEU credits while focusing on mastering skills that are most relevant to successful organizational leadership.

Topics include:

• Communication

• Decision Making and Strategic Thinking

• Leadership vs Management

• Problem Solving, Responsibility and Accountability

• Engagement and Motivation

• Emotional Intelligence, Self-Awareness, and Self-Mastery

By the end of the program experience, class members will gain extensive experience and insights into their own leadership style, improve their leadership techniques, become a more effective communicator, and develop skills and strategies that will help them take on new leadership challenges in their organizations and in our community.

“Leadership is not a destination, it is a journey, and everybody can learn everyday how to be better, and how to support other people of their team. I think as leaders we all have a responsibility to build up those coming behind us, and what better way to do that than to continue to hone and sharpen the saw in terms of the soft skills,” stated Danielle Black of Cragin & Pike.

The Leadership Advance program is held one Friday a month for five consecutive months. The program is offered twice per year, from February to June in the Spring and from August to December in the Fall.

Session 1: February 14, 2025

Session 2: March 21, 2025

Session 3: April 25, 2025

Session 4: May 23, 2025

Session 5: June 13, 2025

Graduation: June 13, 2025

Registration closes January 31, 2025.

LAS VEGAS REVS UP FOR THE RETURN OF FORMULA 1

Motorsport fans will descend on Las Vegas for the FORMULA 1 HEINEKEN SILVER LAS VEGAS GRAND PRIX from November 21-23. Following the inaugural race in 2023, the highly anticipated event will return with all-new activations for both locals and visitors to engage in the thrill of Formula 1 racing, set against the backdrop of the Sports and Entertainment Capital of the World.

This year’s race will feature new ways for fans to experience the action, including more general admission ticket options and the first-ever free daytime F1 Las Vegas Grand Prix Fan Experience on November 22 and 23, offering an opportunity for fans of all ages to immerse themselves in the world of Formula 1 at no cost. Fans will also get the chance to witness two racing series speed down the Strip with the addition of the Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli. Race excitement will extend to downtown Las Vegas with the inaugural Neon City Festival, a first-of-its-kind music, art, and culinary event featuring all-star headliners Seven Lions, Alison Wonderland, Russell Dickerson, and Neon Trees.

Last year’s inaugural race was the largest sporting event in Las Vegas history with more than 316,000 attendees and a total economic impact of nearly

$1.5 billion to Southern Nevada. The event put Las Vegas on the world stage, attracting a record visitation of 145,000 unique visitors who attended the event throughout race weekend and garnering a global television audience of 59.3 million.

Thanks to marquee events such as the FORMULA 1 HEINEKEN SILVER LAS VEGAS GRAND PRIX, spending by visitors in our destination last year contributed an all-time high of more than $50 billion to our local economy. This spending helps power our economy and enhance our community by supporting businesses, creating jobs, and supporting schools, transportation, healthcare, and other public services. The 2023 race generated $77 million in tax revenue for the community, more than any event in the destination’s history, with race attendees spending 3.6 times more than the typical Las Vegas visitor. The event also helped set a record for visitation and gaming revenue during the month of November.

The return of the Las Vegas Grand Prix not only emphasizes Las Vegas’ position as the Sports and Entertainment Capital of the World but demonstrates how tentpole sporting events help power our economy and benefit all who call Las Vegas home.

MULTIPURE’S PURE FOUNDATION LAUNCHES CLEAN WATER

FOR HEALTH IN-KIND DONATION PROGRAM FOR NONPROFITS IN LAS VEGAS

Multipure, a trusted leader in the water filtration industry for more than 50 years, has launched a new initiative through its nonprofit, Pure Foundation. The new Clean Water for Health In-Kind Donation Program is designed to support nonprofit organizations who serve families and children, especially those who are immunocompromised. With the first phase of this program launching locally, the Pure Foundation will provide free water filtration systems directly to Las Vegas nonprofit organizations to ensure they have clean drinking water for their facilities, which in turn, will provide clean water to the vulnerable populations they serve. Additionally, nonprofits can nominate families in their care who may also need filtration systems in their homes for safe, free access to clean drinking water.

MEETING A CRITICAL NEED FOR SAFE WATER

Recent studies show increasing concerns about water contaminants, particularly PFAS (Perand polyfluoroalkyl substances), which have

been detected in water sources across the U.S. Multipure’s filtration systems are designed to remove harmful contaminants including these long lasting ‘forever chemicals,’ which can pose significant health risks, especially to vulnerable populations, highlighting the critical need for effective water filtration solutions.

Access to clean water is vital for the well-being of children with compromised immune systems, who are at heightened risk from waterborne contaminants which can exacerbate health challenges. Nonprofits often serve as the backbone for supporting at-risk populations, and the Pure Foundation is committed to helping them provide safe environments for the people they care for, while reducing costs and dependence on bottled water.
