A WELCOME MESSAGE FROM

CHAMBER PRESIDENT AND CEO As 2024 comes to an end, let’s reflect on this incredible year of accomplishments at the Vegas Chamber on behalf of you, our members. From the largest Washington, D.C. Fly-in in history with more than 300 attendees, to our Business Exchange trip to Hawaii to strengthen business connections with our sister state, the Vegas Chamber once again is the leader in getting you plugged into the community, information, and economic development opportunities. Our most recent achievement: successfully endorsing and electing candidates at the state and local levels that are committed to looking out for employers and small businesses. I am pleased to report to you that overall the Chamber had a 90.4% overall win rate in the general election. This included races for State Legislature, Clark County Commission, City Council, Clark County Board of School Trustees, and the NSHE Board of Regents. You can read more about our election accomplishments in this edition of the magazine. We will celebrate these accomplishments along with many others at our Annual State of the Chamber and Board of Trustees Installation Luncheon on December 12, 2024. Please join us and meet the 2025 trustees and hear the vision and priorities for the coming year from 2025 Chairwoman Janet Uthman. I am incredibly proud of our entire Chamber team that strives every day to serve you with world-class excellence, helps you plug into the information and resources you need, and represents your interests at all levels of government.

COVER STORY VEGAS CHAMBER PRESIDENT & CEO MARY BETH SEWALD INTERVIEWS

JANET UTHMAN 2025 CHAMBER CHAIRWOMAN Mary Beth: I am very excited today because today we are talking to our Chairwoman-Elect, Ms. Janet Uthman with Cox Communications. Janet, you’ve been a great board member at the Vegas Chamber. You work with an amazing company that does a lot for us here in Southern Nevada and across the country. And so, welcome to the Vegas Chamber. We’re very excited to have you as our chair this next year in 2025. It’s a big year. Tell us a little bit about some of your priorities.

politicians enhances opportunities to collaborate, share updates, and influence initiatives critical to the business community. Our presence in City Hall underscores the Chamber’s vital role and positions us as a key player within the civic framework. Ultimately, this transition cements the Chamber as the crown jewel of Civic Plaza, creating a central hub that will elevate support for our members and strengthen our impact across Southern Nevada’s business landscape.

Janet: As Chairwoman, I aim to build on Betsy Fretwell’s priorities, such as advancing the business licensing portal with the Secretary of State and overseeing the Chamber’s move to Civic Plaza. Expanding BizPAC funding to enhance advocacy for Nevada businesses is a key focus. I also plan to increase awareness of state retirement benefit programs for small businesses. Lastly, I will prioritize grassroots efforts to educate organizations about the Chamber’s impact, ensuring partnerships with groups like the National Association of Women Business Owners grow stronger.

Mary Beth: Beyond the exciting transition to Civic Plaza, you’ve outlined an ambitious list of priorities for 2025. Among those, what excites you most as you look ahead to your chairmanship? What initiatives or opportunities are you most eager to tackle, and how do you envision their impact on the business community?

Mary Beth: Janet, you’ve raised some excellent points about the importance of grassroots efforts and educating people on the Chamber’s role, especially as we prepare for the move to Civic Plaza. This project has been three years in the making and represents a transformative milestone for the Vegas Chamber. Your leadership will be instrumental in taking us across the finish line. With our partnership with Workforce Connections and proximity to City Hall, how do you envision this move elevating the Chamber’s ability to serve and connect the Southern Nevada business community? Janet: This move makes a bold statement about the Chamber’s significance. Being closer to local

6 2024 TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS

Janet: As a community leader, I thrive on being hands-on and engaging directly with businesses. With your initiative to connect with small businesses across the valley and the state, I’m excited to join you in these efforts. Listening to the challenges and needs of small business owners will help us address their concerns effectively. These insights can be carried to Washington, D.C., to strengthen our advocacy. Small businesses often lack resources like lobbyists or employee benefits, making our support crucial. Your dedication to their success inspires me. Thank you for leading this important mission. Mary Beth: Speaking of advocating, 2025, your chairmanship is a legislative session. So talk to us a little bit about your thoughts about the legislative session and our advocacy on behalf of small and large businesses across the country. Janet: The Chamber has been pivotal in supporting both large and small businesses through its advocacy efforts. Your role in local

caucuses and backing impactful bills has made a significant difference, especially in Carson City. When the Chamber lends its voice to legislation, it carries weight and drives results. Paul Moradkhan’s expertise and analysis of nearly a thousand bills during the last session exemplify the value of the Chamber’s leadership. We deeply appreciate this partnership, which continues to unify businesses in advancing policies that benefit Nevada’s economy.

NEW EMPLOYER RETIREMENT SAVING PLAN MANDATE FOR NEVADANS

N

evada will soon become the latest state to mandate that most businesses provide a retirement plan for their employees.

SB 305, which was passed in the 2023 legislative session, will become effective July 1, 2025. It requires most employers to provide a retirement savings plan for their employees. This may include enrolling them in a state-sponsored plan or a chamber of commerce 401(k) plan :

The Vegas Chamber offers members a prenegotiated retirement plan that satisfies the SB 305 mandate. There is currently no start-up cost and only $100 per quarter to the employer and $4 per month per employee with a balance. There are other low fees to consider. For more information, visit vegaschamber.com/401k or call the Caldera Wealth team at (702) 616-2000. The Chamber will be keeping members informed as more details regarding this mandate become available.

• Employers with an existing retirement program are exempt. • Employers with less than five employees are exempt. • Employers in business for less than 36 months are exempt. • Employees are automatically enrolled by default at 120 days of employment. • Employees may elect to opt-out.

Details surrounding the employer penalties have not yet been outlined. A 401(k) plan may be appropriate over the State Plan for many businesses, including but not limited to tax credits of up to $5,000, higher contribution limits, actively managed investment options, pretax contributions, loan options, and employer contributions.

LEADERSHIP ACCESS ENROLLMENT OPEN:

AFFORDABLE WAY TO INVEST IN YOUR LEADERSHIP TALENT Every organization – large and small - needs great leaders at all levels to be successful – leaders who can inspire teams to succeed and reach goals, effectively communicate, instill company values, and strategically solve problems. Yet, most businesses neglect providing the training necessary to help the people they put in leadership roles hone the skills necessary to be effective and successful. That’s why the Leadership Advance program is so powerful. The Leadership Advance program, offered through the Vegas Chamber’s Leadership Foundation, is tailored to professionals at all levels who want to enhance their leadership skills so they can transform themselves into more effective managers and leaders. It is an affordable way for organizations to provide high quality leadership training. Through Leadership Advance, organizations develop a pipeline of in-house leadership talent that will drive growth in their operations. It is a cost-effective way to invest in professional growth of their leaders to help them gain the skills they need to succeed. “Joining Leadership Advance has been one of the best experiences of my career. I highly recommend this program whether you are new to leadership or have been in a leadership role for some time,” said Nicole Shelton of Nevada State Bank. During the 5-month DISC-based program, class members will earn 3.6 CEU credits while focusing on mastering skills that are most relevant to successful organizational leadership. Topics include: • Communication

By the end of the program experience, class members will gain extensive experience and insights into their own leadership style, improve their leadership techniques, become a more effective communicator, and develop skills and strategies that will help them take on new leadership challenges in their organizations and in our community. “Leadership is not a destination, it is a journey, and everybody can learn everyday how to be better, and how to support other people of their team. I think as leaders we all have a responsibility to build up those coming behind us, and what better way to do that than to continue to hone and sharpen the saw in terms of the soft skills,” stated Danielle Black of Cragin & Pike. The spring programwill begin February 14, 2025 and conclude June 2025. Registration deadline: January 31, 2025.
