A WELCOME MESSAGE FROM CHAMBER PRESIDENT AND CEO

June is Public Safety Month and a great time to think about the responsibility of keeping employees and customers safe from harm. The cover story of this issue features Jonathan Alverez, owner of Protective Force International, one of Nevada’s leading private security firms.

I had the opportunity of shadowing Jonathan through many aspects of being a public safety professional. It is an experience that has made me even more respectful of the men and women who are dedicated to protection: police, fire, military, and private security. In the magazine, Jonathan discusses the current state of public safety in our city, as well as shares some of his tips to help you keep your workplace safe.

Join us on Wednesday, June 26, for Business Expo at the World Market Center. Business Expo is the Vegas Chamber’s annual trade show, giving our members an affordable way to showcase their products and services to the community. It is also a great opportunity for you to network and build relationships with fellow business leaders and small business owners. Tickets are free and available on our website at Business Expo 2024 (vegaschamber.com). I look forward to seeing you there.

June 11 is Primary Election Day in Nevada. I encourage you to take time to vote in the Primary Election. There are many consequential primary races in which the business community has a stake including for the Nevada Legislature, local governments, and boards of education. The Vegas Chamber’s Government Affairs Committee, comprised of Chamber members from across many different industries, have made endorsements in several of the races. You will find the Chamber-endorsed candidates in this magazine. Please use it as a guide to help you cast your vote in the election.

This month, we celebrate the graduation of two of our Leadership Foundation programs: Leadership

Las Vegas and Leadership Advance. Congratulations to all our class members who have invested in themselves to become more engaged leaders and champions of our community. We look forward to seeing their next steps in making Las Vegas an even betterplace to live and work.

As always, please reach out to the Vegas Chamber team if there is anything we can do to support your business. We are here to serve you.

COVER STORY

SAFETY IN LAS VEGAS WITH PROTECTIVE FORCE INTERNATIONAL

The allure of Las Vegas frequently overshadows its less glamorous challenges, such as the ongoing issue of properties being exploited by squatters for shelter or illegal activities. This situation poses significant challenges for the city, property owners, and business owners, that must address the consequences of these unoccupied spaces. Moreover, this issue leads to additional public safety concerns.

Protective Force International, with its task force of specialty-trained security officers, assists in addressing this matter by conducting thorough sweeps of vacant properties and reclaiming them from unlawful occupancy. The private security firm has taken on the challenge of addressing several issues in Las Vegas. Their efforts have attracted national attention, and their specialized teams have cleared thousands of units just this year.

Vegas Chamber President and CEO Mary Beth Sewald joined Protective Force International for a tour of their new downtown headquarters and conducted a ride-along with their Security Chief and

Security Patrol Officers in the Downtown Sector. During the ride-along, they also monitored downtown alleyways, checked on individuals possibly in need of assistance, and responded to urgent calls from dispatch. The task force, comprising over 50 specialty-trained security officers, is dedicated to clearing squatters from various city properties. Equipped with protective gear, the team conducts thorough neighborhood sweeps, sometimes inspecting over 100 vacant units in a single operation. Led by Chief Jonathan Alvarez, the security team inspects properties for unlawful occupancy. Armed with both ground patrols and aerial surveillance using drones, they can meticulously comb units. They also conduct K9 patrols and deploy tactical camera systems for extensive surveillance. The risks are inherent in these operations. The team’s approach prioritizes both the safety of their team and the enforcement of property rights.

“Currently there are over 16,200 vacant units in Southern Nevada. This does not include vacant land plots, single-family homes, and vacant commercial

14 #5 2024 TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS

structures. We guess it’s well over 25k “vacant areas” in Southern Nevada,” Alvarez stated.

The challenges encountered during these sweeps underscore the multifaceted nature of the issue. While some units are unoccupied, others harbor individuals engaged in illegal activities ranging from drug production to human trafficking. Such discoveries shed light on the gravity of the situation, emphasizing broader implications. Additionally, the physical damage inflicted on these properties exacts a heavy toll on owners, compounding the financial burden imposed by squatting. Business owners and others experiencing quality of life issues due to these activities also feel the impact.

The Protective Force International security team remains dedicated to safeguarding Las Vegas communities by addressing issues before they escalate into threats. Their efforts extend beyond mere eviction; individuals apprehended during sweeps are often provided with necessary assistance and referred to appropriate support services. Moreover,

the integration of their operations with local law enforcement agencies ensures a coordinated response to the broader issue of unlawful occupancy. As the Vegas community braces for more events like Formula 1 and the Super Bowl, the importance of such collaborative efforts is magnified. Protective Force International also enhances security for tourists, adding K9 units and additional resources during high-traffic periods like the 4th of July on Fremont Street, working closely with casinos to ensure safety and act as a deterrent.

Additionally, Southern Nevada businesses can also benefit from learning about self-defense to better protect their employees and enhance overall workplace safety. The Vegas Chamber recently invited Protective Force International to its offices to discuss public safety. Vegas Chamber staff had the opportunity to listen to a safety presentation with tips, situational awareness, and stories. Staff also asked various questions about situations and experiences. One topic that was covered was self-per-

COVER STORY

ception which significantly impacts responses to an attack; those who feel strong and capable are more likely to fight back effectively compared to those who feel timid. Proper training enhances awareness of one’s surroundings and behaviors, fostering a mindset that can improve self-preservation and potentially save lives.

In the face of mounting challenges, Protective Force International serves as a beacon of peace and security for Las Vegas residents and property owners. They are also referred to as the other first responders, playing a crucial role on the front lines during crises, outnumbering police officers two to

one. They collaborate closely with police, fire, and paramedics, frequently being the first to respond or call for emergency services due to their constant presence where needed. By tackling various public issues related to safety head-on, they not only reclaim valuable spaces but also reaffirm the importance of security and order in urban environments. As the city continues to evolve and grow, ensuring safety will require ongoing effort, and Protective Force International is committed to providing the necessary vigilance and support.

SAFETY TIPS:

Here are six safety tips from PROTECTIVE FORCE INTERNATIONAL to help ensure personal and property security:

1.

2.

3. 4.

VEGAS YOUNG PROFESSIONALS FIRST MENTAL HEALTH WELLNESS PANEL

Earlier this month, Vegas Young Professionals hosted its first Mental Health Wellness Panel, an important event dedicated to discussing the significance of mental health in our professional lives. The panel featured Dr. Whitney Owens Koch, Dr. Shellie Keller, and Trinh Dang - Executive Director at NAMI Southern Nevada with Kirsten Larsen moderating. Each shared stories, strategies, and support, emphasizing that taking care of our mental health is just as crucial as any other aspect of our lives. This event marked a significant step in breaking down barriers and building a community where mental wellness is a priority, fostering a supportive environment for all professionals. Some questions and answers from the panel included:

Looking at the larger scale here in Las Vegas, what trends are you seeing as far as mental health challenges in the workplace? Especially remote vs inthe-office.

In Las Vegas, a city renowned for its unique economic landscape, mental health challenges in the workplace an ever-evolving narrative, especial-

ly amid the dichotomy of remote versus in-office work setups. As Dr. Owens reflected on the historical context of the 40-hour workweek, originally designed without regard for mental well-being, she underscored a poignant reality: while productivity has surged over the decades, the commensurate increase in personal prosperity has lagged. This dissonance fuels a pervasive sense of disillusionment among workers, particularly younger professionals, who may find themselves grappling with the dissonance between effort expended and rewards reaped.

The transition to remote work, accelerated by the pandemic, has precipitated a paradigm shift in the traditional office dynamic. While many find solace in the autonomy and flexibility afforded by remote work, a shadow looms over the sense of belonging and camaraderie that often defines workplace culture. Dr. Owens emphasized the importance of self-awareness and boundary-setting in navigating this terrain. For her, the solitude of remote work proved detrimental to her mental well-being, underscoring the subjective nature of work prefer-

18 #5 2024 TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS VEGAS YOUNG PROFESSIONALS

ences. Employers like Trang echo this sentiment, acknowledging the heterogeneous nature of employee needs and implementing hybrid models to accommodate diverse work styles.

Yet, amidst this landscape of shifting paradigms, a crucial question emerges: what defines the value of a company? The answer, Dr. Owens suggests, lies in alignment with individual values and needs. Whether advocating for remote or in-office work, the onus is on both employees and employers to prioritize holistic well-being. As the discourse continues to unfold, characterized by tensions between tradition and innovation, one thing remains clear: the journey towards mental health equity in the workplace is as nuanced as it is essential.

Resources available in the workplace:

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a significant shift in how workplaces handle mental health and overall wellness, prompting many to offer flexible benefits tailored to individual needs. Companies are now providing a variety of options such as child care, additional mental health services, extra vacation days, and remote work arrangements to better support their employees. However, ensuring the quality of mental health services is crucial, as a poor experience can deter individuals from seeking further help. Effective communication about these benefits and setting a positive example from leadership are essential for fostering a supportive work environment.

Large corporations, especially in industries like casinos, are increasingly recognizing the importance of mental health. For instance, companies like MGM are actively promoting mental health awareness by

organizing resource fairs and other initiatives for their employees. Despite the availability of Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) and wellness programs, many employees remain unaware of these resources. It is vital for those in managerial roles to disseminate information about these services and encourage their use to enhance employee well-being.

Training managers to genuinely prioritize and model work-life balance is essential for creating a healthy workplace culture. Leaders need to practice what they preach by truly taking time off and not expecting constant availability from their employees. This approach helps prevent mixed messages that undermine mental health initiatives. Ensuring that mental health services meet high standards before being offered and consistently communicating their availability can significantly improve employees’ mental health outcomes and overall job satisfaction.

Recommendations for those trying to find a good work/life balance:

Finding a healthy work-life balance has been a challenge, leading to significant changes in my approach to self-care. Simple practices like meal prepping, exercising, getting good sleep, and spending time with supportive friends are crucial. Self-care varies for everyone; it’s about what truly brings joy, whether that’s hobbies or spending time with loved ones. Understanding self-care is vital for long-term well-being and effectiveness.

LAS VEGAS CONVENTION & VISITORS AUTHORITY

EXPLORING THE TOURISM INDUSTRY’S IMPACT IN SOUTHERN NEVADA

In May, Las Vegas celebrated National Travel and Tourism Week (NTTW), an annual day of advocacy that underscores travel’s essential role in driving our nation’s economy. Conceived by the U.S. Travel Association, the premier advocacy association for the travel industry, NTTW highlights tourism’s role in fueling job creation and strengthening communities.

The impact of tourism is especially evident in Southern Nevada, where the tourism industry powers our economy, causing a ripple effect throughout the entire community. With visitor spending hitting an all-time high of more than $50 billion in 2023, the industry continues to positively impact the lives of residents. Driven by visitor spending on hotel rooms, dining, shopping and more, tourism directly supports the creation of jobs, wages, and economic activity. It also generates additional impacts via suppliers and vendors as well as employee spending on goods and services in the community.

The Clark County room tax paid by guests of local hotel and motel properties alone is expected to exceed $985 million in 2024. Approximately 66 percent of those funds will be reinvested to fund education, transportation, and infrastructure in our community.

In 2023, the tourism industry was the largest regional employer with an estimated 379,000 workers, supporting more than $13 billion in direct wages and salaries. Additionally, local hotels and resorts are committed to improving the quality of life in our community. Corporate responsibility and sustainability initiatives support the missions of local charitable organizations, and many trade show organizers are drawn to Las Vegas because of the destination’s community engagement.

Travel and tourism continue to be the driving force of our economy, enhancing our community and the lives of the more than 2 million residents who call Southern Nevada home.

LEADERSHIP ADVANCE

ENROLLMENT OPEN: AFFORDABLE WAY TO INVEST IN YOUR LEADERSHIP TALENT

Every organization – large and small - needs great leaders at all levels to be successful – leaders who can inspire teams to succeed and reach goals, effectively communicate, instill company values, and strategically solve problems. Yet, most businesses neglect providing the training necessary to help the people they put in leadership roles hone the skills necessary to be effective and successful.

That’s why the Leadership Advance program is so powerful. The Leadership Advance program, offered through the Vegas Chamber’s Leadership Foundation, is tailored to professionals at all levels who want to enhance their leadership skills so they can transform themselves into more effective managers and leaders. It is an affordable way for organizations to provide high quality leadership training.

Through Leadership Advance, organizations develop a pipeline of in-house leadership talent that will drive growth in their operations. It is a cost-effective way to invest in professional growth of their leaders to help them gain the skills they need to succeed.

“Joining Leadership Advance has been one of the best experiences of my career. I highly recommend this program whether you are new to leadership or have been in a leadership role for some time,” said Nicole Shelton of Nevada State Bank.

During the 5-month DISC-based program, class members will earn 3.6 CEU credits while focusing on mastering skills that are most relevant to successful organizational leadership. Topics include:

• Communication

• Decision Making and Strategic Thinking

• Leadership vs Management

• Problem Solving, Responsibility and Accountability

• Engagement and Motivation

• Emotional Intelligence, Self-Awareness, and Self-Mastery

By the end of the program experience, class members will gain extensive experience and insights into their own leadership style, improve their leadership techniques, become a more effective communicator, and develop skills and strategies that will help them take on new leadership challenges in their organizations and in our community.

“Leadership is not a destination, it is a journey, and everybody can learn everyday how to be better, and how to support other people of their team. I think as leaders we all have a responsibility to build up those coming behind us, and what better way to do that than to continue to hone and sharpen the saw in terms of the soft skills,” stated Danielle Black of Cragin & Pike.

The Leadership Advance program is held one Friday a month for five consecutive months. The program is offered twice per year, from February to June in the Spring and from August to December in the Fall. The Fall program will begin August 2 and conclude December 13. The registration deadline is July 31.

LEADERSHIP ADVANCE - FALL 2024

For more information or to register for the Leadership Advance program, please reach out to Alejandra Rodriguez, Leadership Advance Program Manager, at Alejandra@leadership.vegas or call (702)-684-1246.
