Founder’s Letter
HAPPY HOLIDAYS AND WELCOME TO THE PREMIER NATIONWIDE ISSUE OF VEGOUT MAGAZINE! After six successful issues of VegOut LA and two of VegOut NYC, the team and I decided to combine forces and take the magazine nationwide. We were hearing a lot of “You need a VegOut in OUR city!” Now, we’ll be covering restaurants and businesses across the nation, from Monty’s Good Burger in Los Angeles to Kitchen 17 in Chicago to Slutty Vegan in Atlanta, and everything in between. It’s been a difficult 2020, but here we are—together—ready to enjoy some holiday cheer. I hope you all can make some time to relax, treat yourself to amazing plant-based food, and enjoy celebrations with your family and friends. Goodness knows, we all deserve it. In this issue, we’ve rounded up all things holiday—from festive drinks (see page 60) to plant-based roasts (see page 80). Those beautiful treats on the cover are from Maya’s Cookies (one of my favorite vegan brands!). You’ll learn more about those as well as other baked goods that ship nationwide on page 68. We’ve put together our ultimate vegan gift guide to help you with your holiday shopping—flip to page 10. If you’re cooking this holiday season, be sure to check out pages 31 for recipes sure to please and page 48 for must-have cookbooks. And don’t miss the spotlight on Slutty Vegan—founder Pinky Cole has absolutely rocked 2020! She’s doing incredible things for the vegan movement. Read all about them on page 16. So here’s to what’s left of 2020 and to a fresh start in ‘21. Cheers!

This ordinance extends to all Nordstrom properties—including Nordstrom Rack, last chance stores, and online shops—and was brought to fruition via a partnership with the Humane Society of the United States. The brand is the first major retailer in the US to take this stance.
Originally debuted in Denver in 2019, this nationwide sub shop has extended its vegan corned beef option to an additional 16 locations in Seattle, WA. The chain sources these plantbased slices from Mrs. Goldfarb’s Unreal Deli. If the customer response is positive—as it was in Denver—the chain may look to expand this vegan meat option nationwide.

SLUTTY VEGAN
With a head-turning name like Slutty Vegan, an initial grand-opening crowd is to be expected. However, a provocative name alone—even with the backing of celebrity influence— won’t provide staying power. Now three locations strong, this Atlanta-based vegan burger concept has proved that there is exceptional quality behind its buzz-worthy burgers such as the Super Slut and Fussy Hussy. But Slutty Vegan is more than just another vegan fast food joint—it’s a vehicle for change and progress. By Tanya Flink
WHAT’S IN THE NAME
According to founder Aisha “Pinky” Cole, a “slutty vegan” is someone who enjoys and craves plant-based junk food, so really, we’re all a little slutty vegan at heart. Cole launched her idea as a burger delivery service in 2018 that soon grew into a food truck (aka the “Slut Mobile”) with lines extending for hours. Her first of now three Atlanta locations found its roots in the historically Black neighborhood of Westview—and that was intentional. Yes, Cole wanted to break the vegan “rabbit food” stereotype, but she also wanted to disband the notion that the vegan lifestyle was exclusively for white people. Her staff is predominantly Black, and she is successfully attracting a diverse customer base. While her towering burgers and super-stuffed sandwiches are priced higher than typical drive-thru fare, Cole consistently makes a dedicated effort to give back to her community.
GIVING GIVING BACK BACK
In partnership with her non-profit—The Pinky Cole Foundation—Cole has relied on her burger business to provide food and funds to communities in need. When the pandemic first hit, Slutty Vegan donated meals to the National Church Residences (a senior living community). The restaurant continued its charitable efforts by supplying first responders with complimentary meals throughout the summer. Serving as the Slutty Vegan philanthropic arm, The Pinky Cole Foundation has also provided college scholarships to Slutty Vegan employees seeking higher education, paid tuition balances for 30 Clark Atlanta University students, gifted four fully-funded scholarships to the children of the deceased Rayshard Brooks (who was shot by police in an Atlanta Wendy’s parking lot in June 2020), and partnered with Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice to provide $10,000 for job training and employment education to formerly incarcerated youth. For Cole, and the thousands who have and will benefit from her efforts, Slutty Vegan is doing more than just slinging burgers—it’s changing lives for the better.
VEGOUT MAGAZINE | 17
FOOD THAT’S WORTH THE WAIT When the first Slutty Vegan outpost opened in January 2019, the multi-hour line formed early and never died down. Given the restaurant’s bold name and Cole’s reputation as a television producer, this wasn’t too shocking for the grand opening event. However, six months later, one could still expect to wait an hour for a burger—and it’s not for lack of an efficient staff. The menu is truly craveable, and locals across Atlanta continue to flock to the storefront. Most of the Slutty Vegan menu features gravity-defying burgers made with the Impossible patty, a sweet Hawaiian bun, and an assortment of complementary toppings. If you’re going the traditional toppings route, the Fussy Hussy will give you a vegan burger topped with pickles, non-dairy cheese, caramelized onions, lettuce, tomato, and Slut Sauce (akin to a Thousand Island secret sauce). For something south of the border, the Super Slut will take you there with its guacamole, vegan cheese, lettuce, tomato, jalapenos, caramelized onions, and Slut Sauce. The menu also offers a stacked chik’n sandwich (Chik’N Head), a fully-loaded hot dog (Big Dawg), New Orleans-inspired po’boy (Heaux Boy), and a unique sandwich made with sweet jerk plantains, lettuce, tomato, and Slut Sauce (PLT). Prices range from $11-$19 for each sandwich and all come with a generous side of crispy crinkle-cut fries.

CREATING AN EMPIRE
With three permanent locations and a roving food truck, Cole is creating a solid community of “slutty vegans” in Atlanta. Given her kind of ambition, there’s little doubt she’ll stop there. In under two years, Slutty Vegan has become a recognizable name across the nation. The company popped up at the 2019 Los Angeles-based food and beer event— Eat Drink Vegan—and sold over 1,000 burgers with a never-ending line that impeded foot traffic. During the event’s post-interview, Cole told L.A. Weekly that she has been looking at locations in Los Angeles, explaining that the West Coast city is like her second home. The pandemic may have stalled this search, but Cole’s Slutty Vegan empire is sure to expand in the future.

WHAT IS YOUR MOST INSTAGRAMMABLE MENU ITEM? Our Rainbow Rocket. It has worked miracles for our company in getting the word out, as it has gone viral countless times. It’s literally been its own marketer.
I would say our vegan six-layer Rainbow Funfetti Cake!
Our doughnuts are definitely the star of the show— particularly those that are filled. They’re massive, usually colorful, and perfect for a cross section shot of our various puddings and jams.
DO YOU HAVE A FAVORI TE SONG TO PL AY WHILE YOU’RE CREATING IN THE KI TCHEN? Any Nipsey Hussle song! His music makes me feel super bossy and creative.
Anything by The Cure—they’ve been my favorite band since I was a teenager.
We’d love to have a fun answer to this, but we don’t often work with music playing. It’s easier to stay focused and communicate with each other that way.
DO YOU HAVE ANY FUN HOLIDAY-THEMED I TEMS? We make a flavor combination that matches the colors for each holiday!
Gingerbread, Thin Mint, and Pumpkin Snickerdoodle Cakes are my favorites to whip up around the holidays!
Nothing too crazy. Doughnuts inspired by holiday pies, cookies, and other desserts. We’ll have seasonal holiday baked goods as well.
IF YOU COULD PICK ONE CELEBRITY TO TRY YOUR TREATS, WHO WOULD IT BE AND WHY? Lebron James. He’s such an inspiration because he was a Black man who came from poverty and used his talents to take his family to the next level. And he’s not just talented, he’s a businessman and a family man. The world needs more people like him.
Not sure if he counts as a celebrity but Henry Rollins! He was a huge inspiration to me growing up and his books and music got me through some hard times.
Probably Joaquin Phoenix. We’re big fans of his work and his passion for animal rights and veganism has always resonated with us.
HOW ARE YOU ADJUSTING TO THE RAPID GROWTH OF YOUR BUSINESS? The more the business grows, the more I grow as a person and learn from my mistakes. In the process, I become a better businessman. Overall, the journey is fun, and I’m excited for the future!
Just trying to move at my own pace and continue to prioritize quality over productivity.
Growth is always scary but exciting. We are a small team of four, so we take things day by day. We try to find ways to increase production and be more efficient while keeping our creativity and quality standards in check. It isn’t always easy!

Vegan & Vegetarian Chinese Restaurants Across the US By: Debbie Morales
Despite reopenings in many states, restaurants across the country have struggled to keep up their sales. On top of a global pandemic and national economic crisis, Chinese restaurants have also had to deal with rampant xenophobia and racism. This holiday season, let’s come together and fight bigotry while enjoying delicious Chinese food! Luckily, there are plenty of vegan and vegan-friendly spots to support all across the country. Here are some of our favorites.
Spicy Moon New York, NY
Spicy Moon, a 100% vegan Szechuan spot, opened a small but mighty space in the East Village two years ago and quickly gained a reputation as one of the best places to enjoy the flavorful dishes of the Sichuan region. Packed with plenty of spice and lots of peppercorn, Spicy Moon provides all the traditional tang while keeping things completely plant-based. The dan dan noodles are a fan favorite, but be warned—they will live in your mind rent free!
Grasshopper Restaurant boston, MA
Grasshopper Restaurant, located a few miles outside of the heart of Boston’s Chinatown, serves up some of the best vegan Chinese food in New England. Their menu is huge and offers plenty of classic options, as well as some noteworthy rarities, including veggie squid and vegan tempura. With lunch specials all under $10 and amazing dinner specials, this is a great spot for any time of day.
Nature Vegetarian Restaurant Oakland, CA
For those searching for vegan Chinese food in the Bay Area, look no further than Nature Vegetarian Restaurant. While many restaurants use commercially manufactured mock meats, all of the substitutes at this spot—including the vegan beef, chicken, and prawn— are made in-house by the devout Buddhist chef-owner, Jian Liu. Stop by and enjoy traditional Chinese dishes, affordable lunch specials, and amazing meat substitutes you won’t find anywhere else!
Plow Bao Austin, TX
26 | VEGOUT MAGAZINE
Plow Bao is an all-vegan food truck parked at Buzz Mill in Riverside. This spot is known for its bao buns and dim sum, using recipes inherited from the owner’s grandmother, but also offers rotating specials. Make sure to stop by on a weekend and try out their scallion pancake wrap made with JUST Egg!
Happy Family Restaurant Los Angeles, CA
Happy Family Restaurant, located in San Gabriel Valley, is a great choice for those looking for vegan-friendly Chinese food near Los Angeles. Offering hundreds of vegan options, reasonable prices, large portions, and even vegan desserts, this spot truly has it all. Order a few things to-go for a family-style meal that will definitely make you happy!
Su Xing House Philadelphia, PA
Su Xing House is a great option for those looking for a casual BYOB Chinese restaurant in Philly. While this spot is vegetarian, almost all of their dishes can be made vegan. Their menu offers plenty of classic dishes, but also features unique options like veggie shark fin, vegetable scallops, and taro croquettes. Stop by and enjoy the generous portions offered here with some of their bubble tea or your own drink of choice!
Spring Cafe New York, NY
Located in the heart of Chinatown, Spring Cafe is not your typical Chinese restaurant. On top of being 100% plant-based, they offer sandwiches and burgers alongside their signature bao buns. This popular street food spot is perfect for when you’re on the go and exploring Downtown Manhattan!
vege paradise los angeles, ca
Operating in San Gabriel for decades, Vege Paradise is truly a pioneer of vegan-friendly food in the Greater Los Angeles Area. Their menu is entirely vegetarian, but they offer plenty of vegan options, and the menu clearly indicates which items contain egg. After enjoying your food, make sure you try some of their vegan dessert options too!
Bodhi Kosher Vegetarian Restaurant New York, NY
NYC has one of the most vibrant Chinatowns in the world, bringing some fierce competition for Chinese restaurants. Bodhi, located in the heart of Downtown Manhattan, manages to shine bright among those stars. Their menu is almost entirely vegan and includes dim sum, amazing lunch specials, and even gluten-free options! With their generous portion sizes and extensive menu, Bodhi is an ideal place to drop by with family and friends for a delicious meal you won’t forget.
Yuan Fu Vegetarian Rockville, MD
While it can be difficult to find great restaurants that accommodate multiple dietary restrictions, Yuan Fu Vegetarian does just that. All of their tasty Chinese food contains no animal products, and they also have special menus for folks who abstain from gluten and oil. Yuan Fu Vegetarian is owned by a chef with more than 30 years of experience in plant-based cooking, so you can trust that you’ll be in great hands here! VEGOUT MAGAZINE | 27
24 Hours in
San Diego BY TANYA FLINK
When the weather cools down but you’re still craving sunshine, San Diego is calling your name. This coastal city offers something for everyone—a big city vibe via its high-rise marked downtown, a laid-back beach and surfing scene, and a suburban sprawl of neighborhoods that thrive on pub and brewery culture. Pack your sunnies and your appetite for this 24-hour tour of San Diego’s best vegan eats and activities.
Good Morning, La Jolla We’re about to cover 40 miles and multiple meals in a day which means we’ve got to start early. Set your mind right by stopping by Dripz in La Jolla first thing in the morning. The coffee shop is an offshoot of beloved San Diego micro-chain Sipz which serves outstanding pan-Asian vegan eats and desserts. Order your ube-hued vegan Vietnamese coffee (or oat latte) to-go then walk a half mile to the La Jolla Tide Pools for a stellar beach view. Keep sipping that coffee as you make your way north to Warwick’s—a quaint independent book shop known to entertain book enthusiasts for hours.
beachin’ Jump on the 5 freeway south and head down to San Diego proper. From here, we have options. Stick to the coast and swing by NoW Sushi for an early light lunch. The small vegan sushi joint is steps from the beach, so bring a towel and order takeout for an impromptu picnic on the sand. Stroll along the beachside pedestrian lane and take in the view, or hop on a scooter (after sanitizing) and speed all the way down to Mission Beach and Tiki Town Adventure Golf. 28 | VEGOUT MAGAZINE
TREAT TIME
Time for an afternoon coffee and a sweet treat. If you love the high-rise scene, head to the Downtown/Gaslamp District for Donut Bar. The popular shop carries a rotating variety of vegan yeast and cake doughnuts. Coffee and doughnut in hand, turn north toward the expansive Balboa Park and take some time for yourself within the calming koi ponds and beautiful bonsai trees that make up the Japanese Friendship Garden. Alternatively, skip the bustle of downtown and immerse yourself in the local history contained within the adobe buildings of Old Town San Diego. Visit the tea shop, make-your-own-candle store, and Nibble Chocolate—a plant-based chocolatier and café serving local vegan pastries, espresso beverages, and luxurious vegan truffles. For true pastry aficionados, be sure to stop by Hazel & Jade (a ten-minute drive from Old Town) before it closes at 2pm. This pop-up-turned-brick-and-mortar is a standout plant-based patisserie that serves everything from flaky croissants to fluffy focaccia and frittata muffins to cheese danishes. It’s well worth the detour.
dinner
Because San Diego has so many fantastic options, we’re giving you a choice for dinner—refined Japanese or fancy Italian. The Yasai in Kerney Mesa is one of San Diego’s best vegan restaurants. Eaters of every kind return again and again for its inventive appetizers, complex sushi rolls, and slurpable ramen. Everything is spectacular, but the Bad Liar roll is a must. If your tastes lean toward Italian, make a reservation at Civico 1845 in Bankers Hill or Downtown. The vegan menu features exquisite dishes from vegan antipasti to ravioli, and cannoli to tiramisu. Stuffed and satisfied, waddle back to your home or hotel room and settle in for some well-deserved Netflix and chill.
ESCAPE TO ENCINITAS If the relaxed beach town vibe is more your speed, spend the day in Encinitas. Get a lazy start and saunter to Ironsmith Coffee Roasters along the PCH. Walk along the beach path just a few blocks away or jump in the waves if you’re feeling energized. Follow this with lunch at Eve Encinitas—an all-day vegan café that makes incredible burritos, cauliflower flatbread pizzas, and outstanding brick-sized quiche. Get some work done at one of Eve’s outdoor dining tables, visit the local boutique shops, or take a transcendental walk through the Meditation Gardens a few blocks south. From here, drive 15 minutes inland to Yummy Cupcakes for a treat, or grab an afternoon beer at Modern Times—a plant-based pub with a vegan menu of giant soft pretzels, burgers, and Asadaslathered fries. Cap off the night by dining al fresco at The Plot—a vegan gem in Oceanside. Order a bottle of wine for the table, elote, Meatless Loaf, Chicken & Waffles, and Spiced Apple Pie. Note: If you’re dining with a partner, order two Chicken & Waffles—this restaurant could survive on this dish alone. VEGOUT MAGAZINE | 29

cinnamon custard bars BROUGHT TO YOU BY MILKADAMIA ADAPTED FROM AMY LE CREATIONS
INGREDIENTS
• 2 sheets of store-bought vegan puff pastry, thawed • 2 cups milkadamia cinnamon creamer • 4 Tbsp cornstarch (can substitute potato starch) • Powdered sugar to dust on top (can also combine with cocoa powder)
INstructions Pastry 1. Preheat the oven to 350° and line 2 baking trays with parchment paper. Place one piece of pastry on each tray, followed by another piece of parchment paper on top of each of those pastry sheets. Top each pan with a second empty baking tray so the pastry does not over puff while baking. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes (or as the packet instructions say) until golden and crispy. Let cool completely. Cut each piece down to the size of an 8-inch square pan. 2. Line the 8-inch square pan with parchment paper. Make sure there’s plenty of parchment paper on the edges to be able to take out the slice when it’s set. Place a piece of pastry on the bottom of the pan and set aside. Custard 1. Off the heat, pour creamer into a large pot. Add the cornstarch and whisk until smooth. Place the pot on medium to high heat. 2. Stir regularly. The custard will start to form first on the bottom. When you notice this happening, give it a whisk to make sure the custard stays smooth (continue to whisk now and then). When it starts to thicken, turn down the heat to low. Still stirring regularly, keep cooking until it’s a thick custard consistency (it’s really important that it’s thick or it might not set firm enough). Takes about 8 to 10 minutes. 3. Pour the custard onto the pastry base and place the other piece of pastry on top. Let cool for 10 minutes before refrigerating for at least 4 hours. 4. Dust with powdered sugar before cutting into slices.
Sweet Sriracha Brussels Sprouts BROUGHT TO YOU BY ZENSWEET

Place on the top rack of the oven for about 30-45 minutes. 6. Stir sprouts halfway through cooking. 7. During the last 10 minutes of baking, reduce remaining ingredients (tamari, ZenSweet monk fruit sweetener, garlic, Sriracha, and black pepper) in a sauté pan over mediumhigh heat until sauce is thickened, about 5 minutes. 8. Remove Brussels from oven once crispy and slightly charred. 9. Place in a bowl, toss with some of the reduced sauce. Do this a little at a time so the sprouts retain their crispy texture. The Best Essential Oil Blends to Get You Through the Holidays
By Cayla White Eastern medicine has utilized the healing power of plants for generations. Essential oils have recently gained popularity here in the West as well, but what’s the fuss about? What about lavender is actually calming, and what does it mean when an oil “grounds” you?

If you could create your own vegan restaurant, what would it be and why?
What advice do you have for new vegans attending holiday gatherings with non-vegan family members?
Who is your vegan celebrity crush? Why?
My restaurant would be a fusion of Latin and East Asian flavors. I’m thinking mega sushi rolls with hibiscus carnitas, avocado and sesame aioli, and pickled purple cabbage … Oh snap! I just got hungry.
Proper Preparation Prevents a Poor Party Experience! And by prepare, I mean both mentally and food-wise! I always prep myself for the jokes and teasing from relatives about my vegan diet and I retort with equally witty (albeit educational) comebacks. If the gathering is potluck style, bring a crowd-pleaser like lasagna and maybe even a vegan dessert to wow everyone. Remember to have fun and that the focus of the party is not your diet, but coming together with folks you love.
My vegan celebrity crush is probably Davey Havok of AFI. I’ve been a big AFI fan since I was a wee laddy and despite their music being wonderful, Davey is also a very outspoken vegan hunk of a man. And I mean, come on … the guy wrote “Totalimmortal.”

Q: How can I stop overindulging in all the vegan goodies over the holiday season?
Q: How do I explain to my family that a vegan diet is healthy and sustainable?
A: Food is an important part of our holiday traditions, but with it constantly around, it's easy to feel overwhelmed. Be sure to fuel yourself well during this season and don’t skip meals to “save calories.” On the days of your events, be sure to eat and hydrate adequately throughout the day. Once you arrive at your festive get togethers, try not to make the entire event about food. Focus on conversations with your besties and stay in the moment. When it comes time to eat, try to create a balanced meal. Opt for half of your plate from veggies like veganized green bean casserole, a quarter of your plate from grains or starches such as candied sweet potatoes or savory stuffing, and be sure to add some protein—hello, Gardein Holiday Roast! Lastly, be choosy. If you can pass on the store-bought roll, do it, but if you want seconds on the homemade mashed potatoes, go for it!
A: Playing an unconsented game of Twenty Questions with your family is hard enough, but if this is one of your first holidays as a vegan, it can be super stressful. When faced with questions about veganism, keep in mind that family and friends are both genuinely curious and a little defensive of their own diet. You might want to have an elevator pitch ready with a few talking points. Remind them that a well-planned vegan diet can supply sufficient nutrients per the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Reassure them that this is not a fad diet and your intentions in following a vegan eating pattern far surpass your own personal gain. It can be easy to get defensive in conversations like this, but stay objective and concise. You know what you’re talking about, so stay confident in your message. And yes, you are easily consuming enough protein, so be prepared to squash that one early!
Q: What are some substitutes for holiday entrées? A: Traditional holiday entrées are often savory, rich, and packed with protein. As we know, protein and flavor are abundant in the plant kingdom, so there are a variety of options to choose from. For the no-cook chef, holiday roasts from Tofurky, Trader Joe’s, or Gardein are great. Trying your hand in the kitchen? Prepare a lentil or nut-based homemade loaf. If roasts aren’t your thing, think protein-rich sides like bean salads or a casserole made with silken tofu. And when going the nontraditional route, there is no shame in showing up with a delicious vegan lasagna. In fact, come on over!
Q: How can I make sure I have vegan food at family meals when heading home for the holidays? A: Ask your host ahead of time if you can send over a recipe or take a dish to pass. If taking a dish, or a few, focus on something yummy that you will enjoy, but make enough to share if possible. Try taking a veggie platter with a tasty plant-based dip. Although this might sound a little cliché, chances are this will freshen up the beige offerings on the app table. You can likely count on a few side dishes like rolls, salad, and roasted potatoes, so opt to take a proteinrich dish like a plant-based roast or hearty casserole to keep you full and prevent you from loading up on light appetizers all night. As for something sweet, there is no need to reinvent the wheel—snag a vegan cheesecake or pie from the store next time you’re out and about. VEGOUT MAGAZINE | 63

Ways to Be Eco-Friendly During the Holidays By: Chelsea Wilkins
64 | VEGOUT MAGAZINE
Make your own wrapping paper.
For something that exists only to be torn off and thrown away, it’s a shame to find out that most store-bought wrapping paper is not recyclable because of the shiny coatings, colors, and foils. Keep wrapping paper out of landfills by getting creative with old maps and newspapers, or homemade artwork. You can also use a scarf, pretty dish towel, bandana, or other cloth item that can be a gift in and of itself. Or forego wrapping entirely! You do you.
Recycle your tree.
Each year, 10 million Christmas trees end up in the landfill. If you celebrate Christmas and purchase a tree each year, opt for one grown without pesticides, and find a local program that recycles Christmas trees. Many cities have programs to turn your tree into wood chips or mulch, and some use them for other environmental projects like streambank stabilization.
Add organic and local foods to your holiday feast.
Support your local farmers who grow produce using regenerative or sustainable farming practices. Not only does local, organic food taste better, but you’ll also be giving back to your community and lowering your carbon footprint in the process.
Buy energy saving LED lights.
Opting for LED lights to decorate your home means that you could be using 90% less energy than conventional holiday bulbs, all while saving money at the same time.
Offset your holiday travel.
If you plan on traveling a lot this holiday season, consider reducing air travel when possible, as well as offsetting the fossil fuel pollution generated by your trip. Companies like Terrapass, CarbonFund, and Carbonify purchase and retire certified carbon offsets on behalf of their donors. Donors are given a choice of project type to which they may donate, including renewable energy, reforestation, and energy efficient projects. The offset projects are verified by a third-party to ensure real carbon dioxide emission reductions.
Donate time or money to an environmental cause.
No better way to get into the holiday spirit than by volunteering! There are countless opportunities to help improve the planet, starting in your own backyard. From cleaning up a local river to organizing a holiday food drive, volunteering is a great way to spend time with family and friends and give back.
Purchase eco-friendly or locally made gifts.
If you choose to purchase retail gifts, try to select products that come in minimal packaging, are made from sustainable materials, and can be easily recycled. Some of our favorites are Pixie Mood bags, Votch watches, and SOKO jewelry. You could also choose gifts that help people live more sustainably, like a compost bin, bamboo toothbrushes, or organic reusable grocery and produce bags.
Give the gift of plants.
Who doesn’t want more plants? Grow your own plants to give away as gifts, or pick some up from your local nursery. It’s a memorable and eco-friendly gift your friends and family can keep for years.
Cut back on food prep waste.
Aim to buy foods in bulk to avoid plastic packaging. You can also switch over to reusable paper towels by using dish towels you already have or grabbing a set online (we love the Unpaper Towels from Marleys Monsters on Etsy). They also make great zero waste gifts too!
Bring a vegan dish to share.
Even if your family isn’t vegan, there is no better time to get them on board by letting them try a decadent vegan dish. There are so many plant-based holiday recipes out there that will convince even the staunchest of meat-eaters. Our favorite sites are Minimalist Baker, From My Bowl, and Vegan Richa. You can also use your delicious food as a talking point to inform your relatives that going vegan has been found to be the single biggest way to reduce your impact on the planet.

LOOK FOR THE GOOD BY JASON MRAZ
We’ve been fans of plant-based leaning singer/songwriter Mraz since he softly scatted into our hearts with “I’m Yours.” This latest album—released in June 2020—has pleasantly filled our earbuds on long walks and cool fall evenings.
THEY’RE TRYING TO KILL US
This long-anticipated film by John Lewis (aka Badass Vegan) and award-winning co-director of What the Health Keegan Kuhn is set to debut this winter. The feature-length documentary intertwines the theme of hip-hop with the racial injustices placed upon Americans through industry and government pressures in regards to food. Race, poverty, disease, and the food on our plates—it’s all connected, and nutrition is the key to justice.
CHILOMBO
BY JHENÉ AIKO
Released on March 6, the chill vibes featured on Aiko’s third album kept us entertained and sane throughout this unprecedented time. The singer/ songwriter combines laidback beats with heavy-hitting lyrics and an allstar cast of collabs including Big Sean, H.E.R., and John Legend.
HIGH CUISINE
Originally aired on a now-defunct niche network, this vegan cooking competition show is currently available on Amazon Prime Video. In a first-of-its-kind series, chefs go head-tohead in a timed culinary battle to produce a masterful vegan dish that adheres to the theme of the episode. The catch? The contestants must smoke cannabis before heading into the kitchen. The result is a hilarious, unscripted program that inspires creativity and cravings for unorthodox pairings of vegan food.
CTV3: COOL TAPE VOL. 3 BY JADEN SMITH
This young entertainer and serial entrepreneur launched more than a cool pair of New Balance sneakers this year. The album dropped late August and helped us savor the last bit of summer with its feel-good energy and cool, cruising-with-the-top-down beats.

THE NEED TO GROW
It can be terrifying to face the very real state of our planet’s degradation. This documentary not only opens the viewer’s eyes to the crisis, but offers practical and necessary solutions to restore the health of Mother Earth. This groundbreaking work is promising to have the influential power of past transformative films such as What the Health and The Game Changers.
