EDITOR’S NOTE
EDITOR’S NOTE Enough of the past...let’s focus on the future, shall we? In order to focus on upcoming trends, we decided to overload this issue with all things new. Yes, we predict that 2020 is still going to see excess of geometry. While it might not be everyone’s favourite, it can however make for some wonderful decor. Circles, squares and rectangles, oh my! Do not worry about pairing the same shapes together, play separately to attract attention through asymmetry rather than balance. Come February, and lilac becomes the new black (or the new millennial pink!). Though the colour has captured all kinds of fashion, there’s a whole realm of purple shades that can brighten up your home. Whether you want to go hardcore or just a hint here and there, the team has it covered. My personal style stamp is always minimal because there is nothing quite like the feeling of a freshly
spruced up space. But taking a virtual tour of Alex Pall’s home(featured in Jan 2020), I have realised that maximalism is the no-rules-necessary approach to hiding one’s personality. Bold colours, interesting artworks, quirky accessories; such spaces can be soothing and welcoming. To help you master the modern take on the less-is-more as well as more-is-more, we gathered chic designs and products from well known designers and brands. Finally, we couldn’t have had a better option than ‘The World Towers’ residences taking over our Nouveau Arrival section and cover for February edition. The project simply oozes style and luxury from head to toe. I ready do hope you have an amazing e going through the pages. Cheers! Ruhi Singh r.singh@nextgenpublishing.net

home Truths Home is where the heart resides. How true. The Ideal Living section is unmistakably a favourite in the family. Beautiful homes from India and designer mansions from Western countries are a great source of information and perfect guides to home decor. For me such homes are a blessing in disguise. As I am student pursuing a course in architecture and interior designing, the stylised homes are a pure source of information and a practical source of edutainment. It also acts as a mentor for a perfect professional future.. . siddhant barucha, Ahmedabad The Ideal Home and Garden February 2020 |

BonAppetit Designed by Marcel Wanders for Alessi, “Dressed en plein air is a young and romantic new collection of tableware, perfect for an outdoor lunch or snack, on a terrace, by the pool or on in a garden. The collection responds to the urgent need of eliminating single use plastic by choosing resistant and sustainable materials. KOHLER The calming movement of water lies at the heart of the BEITOU faucet. The effortless flow of the design mimics the natural cascade of the water over the length of the spout and into the sink. Seen in this light, the faucet becomes a stage for water delivery whose shape and sound resemble a serene river. Includes three water experiences: Cascade, Rain and Laminar. All three experiences feature a choice of Warm White, Pale Orange or Blue Sky LED lights with hydro power.

“Violet is a powerful colour and can be mixed with white colour or white materials such as marble, white concrete or very light wooden floor. Another option that works is to mix violet with oranges, purple and a touch of light blue, and is a very playful and sophisticated combination. Violet for the walls in the bedrooms because it gives you calmness. In living rooms, use violet just for little touches as an art piece, flowers, textiles or furniture. In hospitality projects, we can use violet in any space because it is a very powerful and vibrant colour that has a good impact mpact on customers. “Darker shades of purple haven’t always been favourable when it comes to both interiors and fashion, but rich tones like violet are gaining more popularity right now. Incorporate violet for a single breath-taking accent wall so that it is a focal point, but doesn’t overwhelm your space on all of the walls. Create a tropical inspired theme by pairing violet with a few pops of colour, such as bright yellow, or have a softer and more natural style with a fig colour scheme of violet, light neutral colours, reddish tones and warm coral pink. Since violet is a cooltoned purple, it’s a good idea to stick to one or two stand out decor pieces in violet and pair it with some warmer shades to avoid a washedout colour palette in your room.” - Murals Wallpaper

Being a bold colour, violet goes well with other moody colours like cool blues and vibrant pinks or even its contrast like a canary yellow. An accent wall or accessories in purple, layered with indoor planters, carpets and quirky accessories make for an eye-catching space. hybrid of two styles from different sides of the globe where both share similar principles in exercising minimalism, Japandi brings together the clean lines and rustic calm of Scandinavian minimalism and the traditional elegance of Japan. Combining the best of both worlds it draws on the Japanese notion of wabisabi - finding beauty in the imperfect, and hygge - a Scandinavian word for ‘intentional intimacy,’ a style that focuses on creating an atmosphere of warmth and comfort. Each element is carefully placed and has its own purpose in order to create tranquillity and spaciousness in the room.
Dark, cool and delicate warm and neutral colours, beautifully combined, are what tell the story of the Japandi trend. Where the Scandinavian and minimalist style is often dominated by white and other cool colours, Japandi is characterised by the use of muted, dark colours interacting with bright, natural tones, which together create a warm and cosy ambience in the room like navy blues, bottle greens and burnt oranges. As colour helps warm up the generally cool tones of Scandi style, the rustic, eclectic nature of Scandinavian pieces helps to soften the hard, polished and darker tones of traditional Japanese furniture. The extruded exposed brick block connected with pergola and framed at the entrance creates curiosity in the minds of the visitors about the internal spaces. The office space is divided into different zones, reception/waiting, workstations, and directors cabin - all three spaces are connected with the landscape area, which gives a feeling of being connected with nature. Use of grey coloured floor, exposed brick, morning glory coloured walls, glass doors, veneer finished furniture and knobs gives a mix feeling of traditional and modern interior. Amol has used paintings on
the wall and displayed project photographs for an uber feel. They also added colours to break the monotony, and created some wooden frames with LED profile light to enhance the backdrops - bigger opening on the external walls gives a feeling of seating with nature. The sit out behind the directors cabin is the space where the Patil’s feel more relaxed and brain-map creative ideas. Of note – the wall created behind the director’s background have engraved warli art on sand stone with metal cutting warli human figures with indirect light, thus encouraging the designer to celebrate life and shout out a message that the team at Studio APD works together, using warm white lighting to create a cozy atmosphere. Pythagoras’ Study, Iqrup+Ritz
Geometric furniture is an excellent choice for those who want to be more adventurouss and experimental in their home design; transforming simple chairs and tables into an art that is new and inspiring. There are two principles at the foundation of geometric furniture design: light and space. By refining furniture down to its most minimal dimensions, geometric design increases the perception of light within a room, making it feel larger and more spacious. By making ingenious use of abstract geometric shapes, designers create futuristic models that give the impression that items are floating, suspended within the room. The furniture blends with the environment, making it both part of the room’s distinctive decorative style, as well as a fundamental part of the room. It’s also important to not go overboard or no o one shape gets its moment in the spotlight. Too many references to geometric design means each pop gets watered down and there’s little cohesion. However, you style your interior, be sure to always take into account the effect of architectural shapes already present in your room. Floorboards – planks and herringbone or chevron parquet – give you rectangles, windows can give you squares, rectangles and circles, staircases can cut a trapezium-shape in the room, doorways bring in rectangles, and even ceilings play a role. So look up, look down and look around, take note of their influence and then do the maths to see how they all add up in your scheme.

shweta vyas With a love for colour and intricate detail, Shweta’s glass works are vibrant, ethereal and imaginative. She believes in the healing influences of colour and art. Through her glass work she aims to connect people with their inner child and to bring some vibrancy and joy into their lives. Shweta says, “Glass has become my material of choice, because I just love the richness and lustre it gives to my creations. Working on glass with liquid glass colours needs lots of patience and dedication. It also has to be very precise because unlike paper and canvas, glass is a transparent base and everything painted on one side is easily reflected on the other side of the glass. So along with creating a design one also learns to be precise and persistent, be focused and be steady.” For the future Shweta hopes to get into conducting workshops for glass art lovers, and teach them all the different techniques that she has learned and incorporated in her work with years of practice and experience. She also plans to exhibit more in public, especially solo.

vijay kowshik Vijay Kowshik’s restorations in stained glass is a highly skilled art. Vijay mentions, “Before starting the restoration a lot of research is involved to find the origins of the work, the techniques employed at that point of time, the assessment of glass and various test pieces to ascertain and finalise the process. The removal is done very carefully as the pieces are old and fragile.” Vijay makes an outline diagram on tracing to mark the various pieces of glass. The panel is then dismantled after marking the glass pieces to match the diagram and then removing the lead cames. After detailed cleaning of the glass pieces and remaking the ones that are destroyed the process of reassembly starts with new lead cames which are joined and soldered in a very systematic manner. On completion of assembly, the panel is sealed with a sealant so as to make it waterproof and stable. Vijay works with different kinds/grades of glass for getting different effects and results. Moreover, he likes to use a lot of scrap glass to give it new life and shape. Vijay says, “I believe that glass is indestructible in the true sense of the word and can take different shapes at different times depending on the creator. The techniques I work in are stained glass, fused glass, slumped glass, cast glass, patte de verre, and blown glass. What keeps me going is the joy that I derives from the process of creating.”

NANDINI DATTA Nandini took up art glass in the year 2000 and set up her first studio in North Delhi. Later, she moved to Goa and set up her independent studio in a quaint village. Nandini says, “My inspiration came from visiting the churches in Kolkata at an early age of ten years. The sunlight passing through coloured glass had magical effect on my senses. The beauty of the stained glass was etched in my mind as I grew up, always wanting to know how to paint with glass and create beautiful pieces of art.” As for medium, she uses glass both in cold and hot form. Her techniques include – stained glass in copper foil and lead technique, grisaille painting on glass, glass casting, glass blowing and glass mosaics. As for inspiration she mentions, “My inspiration comes from different things that keep me going. I am obsessed with art and art books, and collect art books and exotic curios. I also get inspired by nature and the sea. At the moment, I am very much inspired by different cultures: Mexican ornaments, Mayan masks, and Andy Warhol’s portraits of women.”

atul Bakshi Atul’s work has acquired the quality of the seer’s crystal ball. As a viewer you’ll spot first the colour, the form, the dazzling brilliance but then, as you go deeper in, the onion layers of sensory experience melt away and what remains in culmination is pure experience…. or pure subjectivity. Atul does not reveal a world; he actually holds up a mirror to one’s aesthetic and spiritual realities. He opens a door not just to another kind of perception, but to a path to the deepest recesses of one’s inner consciousness…revealing the very structure of one’s mind. Atul says, “It’s been a long journey. Seeking initially to comprehend the essence of form in its constituent miniscule elements when I constructed the intricate church panels of stained glass; exploring the dynamic interplay between colour, form and light as interpreted by the refractive quality of glass when I sculpted the abstracts; seeking the middle passage that lies unrevealed between the ephemeral wispiness of crystal and the intense solidity inherent in the opacity of pate de crystal; I am a seeker, a restless explorer, and a student of the myrid variety of the manifest. Today, I am transformed from seeker to seer.” About his glass art he mentions, “Unlike a painting, which can sit on a display indefinitely and with which an artist can interact very slowly and very deliberately over a long period of time, slowly painting as he goes along, a glass artist pulls molten glass from the furnace and has 30 seconds in which to create after which the glass cools and can be worked no more. There is a zen like quality to this work, deliberation and thought do not create art: a magical moment of spiritual intensity are frozen in glass in a flurry of flying hands and then, something has been said.” tihG

DELIGHT Designed for a family of four - celebrity stylist Anisha Jain’s house is nothing short of warm, modern and chic
O
I m p r e s s I o n s : B e n oy s e B a s t I a n
One of the quaint and happening suburbs of Mumbai, Khar is home to celebrity stylist Anisha Jain. A home that is simple, snug, high on the design element, while still being congenial and modish. The house is glazed optimally to let in natural light, while the design palette is inspired by earthy and appeasing hues. Opening up into a foyer, with the living room to its left, muted tones with splashes of pale and dusty pink charm the living room with a unique design language. The scarce use of primary colours adds drama to the space; for instance, the sofa in deep blue revitalises the space by adding a contrasting pop of colour. The house was brought to life by Disha Bhavsar and Shivani Ajmera of Quirk Studio. Disha says, “The family’s needs, preference and their lifestyle is what inspired the layout and the design tone of the space. Keeping in mind Anisha’s brief and by exercising our expertise and skills, we designed a space that embodied character and warmth, while still being congenial and modish. We were working while still adhering to strict timelines for this space as the family was living in one section of the house, while the work was being carried out. This was one of the challenges we faced because it slows down the entire process and we also had to keep the noise to the minimum.” Decor in the house has its own language that is in sync with the overall aesthetic; the house has classic elements, while also incorporating contemporary pieces, which bring it to the 21st century. On the other hand talking about the layout and planning of the house Shivani says, “The house opens into a foyer, with the living room to its left. The living room is done up in shades of pale and dusty pink with splashes of primary colours to add a bit of drama. For instance, the deep blue sofa adds a pop of colour to the living room and to accentuate it we added a colour blocked rug. The seamless lighting fixtures, walls and flooring in generic hues contribute to the overall aesthetic of the space. We experimented with various elements even while sticking to the core theme. The metallic accents fetch glamour to the living area by way of metal-trims of the minimalistic lamps and coffee table. To counter the design tone, wooden chairs were added. The perfect nesting spot for the family - the den, adheres to the design tone of the rest of the house. It features a grey sofa accessorised with green loose cushions placed against a floral backdrop. Also, tucked away in a corner is a bay window seat that adds to the laid-back theme of the space. In sync with the design tone of the rest of the house, the daughter’s bedroom is done up in muted tones. It features an upholstered bed accessorised with quirky shams positioned against a pastel wall adorned with monochromatic artwork. To make the space appear roomy and bright, a light coloured rug was added. To invigorate and to enliven the space, plants are placed in different corners of the house. Anisha’s house is an inviting one. A home where there is love in abundance, flow of colours and undoubtedly loads of inspiration.

The spectator gets spellbounded right at the entrance by the regal wrought iron door with motifs finished in gold leaves. The use of gold was intrinsic to the design as it preserves the shine adding to its timelessness. The public zones of the house are embellished with elements that are both carefully crafted and curated to create a unique ethos of the space, as sort after by the client. one enters the home into a light-filled gallery that features stone mosaic inlay border, stained glass panel and ornately carved consoles. This gracious entrance hall extends to the central foyer, which is essentially the heart of the house. The central foyer is embroidered with an exquisite stone rug and a unique glass installation deriving inspiration from ‘dancing leaves’. The leaves are set in space randomly and oscillate recreating the experience of ‘blowing wind’ through the central lobby.

The formal living room connects to the entrance hall through symmetrical placed French doors. it charms the visitors by drawing their attention to the rich velvet upholstered indigo blue chairs. The arrangement serves as a focal point, directing ones attention to a large frame antique painting, a possession of the family’s lineage. The room is also crowned with a glamorous gilt crystal barovier and toso chandelier adding more antiquity to the space. The dining room is stylised as a fusion, while the furniture slightly departs towards the modern style where the classical ornateness is brought about by the accessories. Balconies are often avoided, but can be turned into a magical and relaxing part of your home. This small part of your house is a place from where all the natural light enters, and the greens are highlighted. Turning your balcony into a garden is not as difficult as it might seem. There are numerous ways in which you can incorporate greens in your balcony, and turn it into a lush garden. From planters to grass patches, from grass flooring to vertical gardening, there are plenty stylish ideas to play with. Interior designers who can take this route for balconies in their designs definitely earn brownie points. A balcony is a space where you can relax

with your morning coffee and favourite book, or stack up on vitamin D. You can practice some yoga directly sitting on dainty green grass, or grow your favourite succulents and flowers by giving your inner gardener a go. Not only does a balcony garden just increase the brand value of your space, but also is so useful and an enjoyable addition to an otherwise boring part of the house. You can even add a swing, or bamboo furniture, or even a fountain to deck up your balcony garden. Statues and sculptures also make for a luxurious element to experiment with, especially with all the options in the market these days. TiHG
