LIVING DREAM the

Designed to show off its coastal HGTV® Dream Home 2020 is surrounded by three spectacular outdoor living spaces—each created with Trex® decking. The inviting entryway, a screened porch spanning the length of the back, and a second-floor deck, each feature the beauty of wood minus the worries. With low-maintenance enjoyment from Trex, this breathtaking property is truly a dream come true.

Trex high-performance, eco-friendly composite decking is engineered with unrivaled fade, stain, scratch, and mold resistance. A simple soap and water cleaning is all that’s needed to keep it looking as good as the view.

Featuring a nature-inspired wood-grain pattern, Trex Enhance® Naturals decking combines the beauty of wood with the ease of composite. Rich, realistic colors like Coastal Bluff bring the home a natural aesthetic and vibrancy that the winner will enjoy for decades.

Trex Transcend® Railing not only frames the space, but serves as a prominent design element. The distinctive, modern look of black balusters with contrasting white posts imparts a sophisticated mix of texture and color.

When the sun goes down across the nearby coast, Trex® DeckLighting™ takes the deck from invisible to inviting. Trex’s dimmable LED lights seamlessly integrate into posts and stairs to enhance safety and ambiance.

Guests don’t typically stop and stare at steps leading up to a second floor…unless they look like these. Logan, UT, blogger Ashley Wilson of At Home With Ashley bought 13 sample pots of latex paint for the job, which included replacing the old squeaky treads. “It’s hard to believe this staircase was once dark wood and deep red—it felt like a cave,” she says. “Now it makes me smile every day.” She even rainbowed a gallery wall to match.

It took six months of flea marketing and thrift store hunting before Nashville, TN, blogger Elsie Larson of A Beautiful Mess could bring this striking display of glasses to life. “When we were first looking at our house and I saw the big arched shelf in the breakfast nook, I thought it was the perfect spot for a splash of color,” she says. She gave herself a $3 budget for each piece, $5 for extra-special ones. “We’ve actually used the glasses quite a bit for parties,” she says. “Kids love them!”

Roy G. Biv may disagree, but it’s cool to break out of the classic rainbow palette— whether you choose different shades or eliminate some colors entirely. “Once I finally decided to make a home for my crafts supplies, I started with pink, my favorite color,” says Brooklyn, NY, blogger Rachel Mae Smith of The Crafted Life. The cans of spray paint are grouped by color family, for optimal organization.

“When I had this cabinet made for a family’s playroom, I was going for a fun and timeless look that would grow with their kids,” says designer Alanna Kleiner, who masterminded this Golden Beach, FL, project. Although this one holds everything the 4-year-old twin brother and sister could want— toys, books, art materials—the mod design, open cubbies up top, and non-primary colors make it stylish, not childish.

After researching various stained-glass ideas, blogger Chelsea Foy of Lovely Indeed decided to go an easier route and cover the glass panels of a door in her Modesto, CA, home with transparent window film (from Solar Graphics Window Tinting). “It’s a fully removable and affordable way to personalize a space,” she says. “The look also brings creativity to the studio where my husband and I work.” The whole thing took a little more than an hour to do. How she got it so smooth: squeegee for the win.

FROM TOP: MOLLY WINTERS; LOVELY INDEED

Designer Katie Kime surprised her team with this break room when they moved into their new headquarters in Austin, TX. She started with white walls and sunny window trim (painted Confident Yellow by Sherwin-Williams). Then she put up playful wallpaper from her collection on the ceiling. Bubble gum pink chairs around the pedestal table match the stripes above. “Regardless of how busy or stressful a day may seem,” says Katie, “this is always a bright and cheery reprieve.”

how bad is it to take a really hot shower?

GAP INTERIORS

“Hot water makes pores dilate and release moisture, so if you stay in a superheated shower for more than five minutes, it could dry out your skin,” says Carolyn Jacob, M.D., a dermatologist in Chicago. During winter, skin may already be on the parched side from indoor heating. (Anyone with eczema should skip a too steamy shower, period.) Besides keeping your shower short, use a cleanser with ceramides—lipids that help form a barrier so skin can retain moisture— such as CeraVe Hydrating body wash. Once you step out, smooth on a rich moisturizer, like Aveeno Skin Relief Moisture Repair cream, while skin is damp, to lock in H20. Finishing with toasty-warm slippers: still a good idea!

how bad is it to put a stamp on upside down? Some people do this as a sign of affection, a tradition dating back to Victorian times when a flipped stamp served as a coded message of love for couples trying to keep their feelings secret. Others place flag stamps upside down as a form of political protest, though it’s considered disrespectful to the flag because the stars should always be upright. What’s key for the U.S. Postal Service: “Put stamps in the upper right-hand corner,” says spokesperson Kim Frum. If not, the postage could go undetected by machinery and require review, slowing up delivery. More USPS don’ts: reusing a stamp that escaped cancellation marks (it’s actually illegal—!!!) and taping on an old one that’s lost its stickiness, which invalidates the postage.

Even if you had plans to meet up at the event, performance, or movie, stepping into a line can come off as rude. When there’s no avoiding it, at least clarify what’s going on. “I make a point of saying, ‘Thanks for holding my spot, sorry I couldn’t make it on time,’ ” says Lisa Grotts, a San Francisco–based etiquette expert. Just don’t bring another pal (a study found that two intruders provoked more of a reaction than one) or crash a queue for something with limited demand, like hot concert tickets or the latest smartphone. That’s purely first come, first served.

ecorating with oodles of colors is all about balance. Just ask Stephanie Freeman, who squeezed as much turquoise, fuchsia, and chartreuse into her Houston, TX, house as she could get past her husband, Brian Tison, and designer Meg Lonergan. “Some homeowners need to be pushed out of their comfort zone—I needed to be reined in,” says Stephanie. Her passion for color dates back to her teen years, when she would fill her bedroom with bright bedding and prints—a stark contrast to the dark woods and deep earth tones of her parents’ house. Stephanie was able to go all out in 2017, when she and Brian replaced their 1940s bungalow with a bigger build. Now they have a vibrant sofa, funky patterned fabrics sprinkled everywhere, and a showstopping turquoise stove, all living in harmony with a neutral backdrop. “Not everything can be a wild color or pattern,” says Stephanie. “I’ve learned that’s a good thing.”

dining room Ghost chairs from Overstock let the table’s cool aged green base stand out. “It’s a machinist table from the 1930s that a local department store displayed perfumes on,” Stephanie says. “It wasn’t for sale but I kept going back until the salesperson gave in!” A pink table runner by Lulu & Georgia echoes the art above the vintage console.

kitchen For years,

The blue range doesn’t just make me smile, it gets my kids excited about cooking. Our son makes his own eggs now. Win! —Stephanie

Stephanie likes the range’s retro vibe as much as the color—Brian does too. Its brass details inspired the pulls and knobs on the cabinets.

whenever Stephanie saw a colorful stove in a magazine, she’d tear out the page and save it. Finally she got a turquoise one by Lacanche to call her own. The couple planned their kitchen around it, choosing quieter options so it could shine— white cabinets, a soft green-gray paint for the island (Comfort Gray by Sherwin-Williams), and glass globe pendants by The Urban Electric Co. One other bold move made the cut: fuchsia counter stools.

vera’s bedroom For the girliest girl in the house, only light peach walls and vintage blue beds, painted Inchyra Blue by Farrow & Ball, would do (the extra bed is for when Grandma visits). Since the graphic curtain fabric from Studio Four NYC was a splurge, designer Meg bought just enough to make edging for white panels, with a pom-pom trim on the seam to really dazzle Vera. The copper pendant is from ABC Carpet & Home.

The way to this 6-year-old’s heart: fun colors, dinosaurs, and a dedicated spot for building supplies. “Normal people fill drawers under a bed with linens,” says Stephanie. “We use ours for Legos.” Henry helped pick out the orangeand-blue Peter Dunham fabric for the curtains. The built-in bed and shelves are painted Homburg Gray by Sherwin-Williams, and a striped Pendleton blanket on the bed gives the space another pop.

ith a patio and pool overlooking the water, a light-filled great room, and a divine master suite, the only problem the future owner of the HGTV Dream Home 2020 will have is deciding which sublime spot to hang out in. The blue and green colors in the living areas of the approximately 3,500-squarefoot home on Hilton Head Island, SC, were inspired by the marsh setting. Furniture and fabrics were chosen for maximum comfort and casual style. “The minute you walk into the house, stress instantly disappears,” says Brian. “You can’t help but feel like you’re on a permanent vacation.”

MODERN KITCHEN

Mixing cabinets and drawers of different sizes: groovy!

A family renos their space, and it’s a real blast from the past.

omeowners typically put in serious effort to make old spaces look new. Gretchen Jorg and Josh Bishop did the total opposite for the kitchen in their mid-century Seattle, WA, home. It had last been remodeled in the ’80s— and it showed, with raised-panel cabinets and wood-look linoleum floors. “Sometimes the right thing to do for a house is to choose finishes that fit its age rather than what’s in vogue,” says Gretchen. Steered by designer Andy Beers, the couple injected ’60s style with light wood cabinetry, a fab green island, and mod seating and lights. “When people first see our kitchen,” says Gretchen, “it takes them a minute to realize it’s new and not original, and then they’re amazed.”

by Sea Gull Lighting have retro cred. They’re hung on the higher side, about 20 inches from the ceiling, to keep the room at its most open and airy.

floor Cork flooring adds warmth and texture and blends with the cabinetry, too. “I was worried about how watertight and durable cork would be, but I’m forever cleaning paint from art projects off the floor, and it’s holding up great,” says Gretchen.

backsplash Gretchen and Josh considered throwback honeycomb tile but decided it would have been too busy with the cabinets. So they picked simple white rectangle tiles by Ann Sacks. Since they’re small-scale and laid in a simple, stacked pattern, they can cover the whole wall and not look overly complicated.

cabinetry and island Local cabinetmaker Kerf Design gets the credit for the plywood cabinetry. Gretchen chose the laminate’s bright shade of green, a longtime favorite. “I got married in a silk dress the same color,” she says. The barstools are by Fritz Hansen.

HGTV Magazine 87

in the kitchen pendant The couple especially loves the cool pleated plastic light by Le Klint because it resembles origami, one of Josh’s hobbies. “When viewed from the street at night, it’s also pretty awesome,” says Gretchen.

dining nook Brown vinyl seat cushions (so ’60s!) have the look of leather with zero maintenance, and vivid pillows punch them up. At 5 feet by 10 feet, the table seats eight comfortably—handy for dinner with friends. The powder-coated-steel chair is by Fritz Hansen, like the barstools.

Booth seating is more friendly for lounging than chairs and has a great old-school vibe. —Gretchen
