MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR It has been a busy and evolving time here at the Vernon Public Art Gallery. I would like to thank everyone for continuing to support the VPAG throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Although we had to close our doors for a short period of time between the end of March to June, we are excited to be back to normal hours of operation. I hope everyone is staying safe and healthy, and I would like to assure anyone who wishes to come enjoy the VPAG again that we have safety protocols in place. For those who are not comfortable physically attending the Gallery, I am happy to say that you can still enjoy the programs and exhibitions online through our website and YouTube page. I would like to thank Kelsie, our Learning and Community Engagement Curator for taking this task head-on and transitioning our public and educational programs, artists talks, and exhibition tours to this online format. I would also like to thank our summer students Chris Akins, Kiera Ariano, and Victoria Otto for all their work on this year’s Riot on the Roof and Midsummer’s Eve of the Arts. I am thrilled we were able to have these signature VPAG events successfully in an online setting! For those who managed to participate, I hope you enjoyed the shows! We have had some new faces join our team here at the VPAG! I’d like to welcome Megan Byers, as our Marketing and Events Coordinator; Nyshaya Leck, as our Development Intern; and Victoria Otto, as our Gallery Attendant. We will all be working towards our new facility and it is great to see our team here at the VPAG growing to support those efforts! We are pleased to present David and Jorden Doody’s: Electric Sleep exhibited from Oct 8th until Dec 22nd. Along with David and Jorden Doody’s sculptural installations, we have the exhibit The Repeatable Image on view, a collection of printmaking works from past and present students at UBC Okanagan. Later in the Fall, taking place from Nov 5th to Dec 22nd is our annual members’ exhibition: Exposed! which allows the opportunity for our local arts community to showcase their work! Once again thank you to our sponsors and funders who help ensure that we can continue to provide quality programming to our community. See you at the VPAG! Dauna Kennedy, Executive Director

Greater Vernon Cultural Centre

Â

In addition to a new home for the Vernon Public Art  the Greater Vernon Cultural Centre will also Gallery, provide space for the Greater Vernon Museum and Archives. In 2018 Greater Vernon voters were asked to decide whether they supported borrowing up to $25 million to fund a portion of the Cultural Centre project. The referendum was approved with the 2018 general local elections. The Capital Campaign is part of the integral funding needed to support this project! The Vernon Public Art Gallery has been a leader in pushing the Cultural Centre project forward, and we are excited to announce that we are now taking pledges toward the $4 million Capital Campaign!

Dauna is currently meeting prospective donors for the facility. If you want to be involved, please contact her at dauna@vernonpublicartgallery.com or 250-545-3173. The Greater Vernon Cultural Centre will act as an economic and social stimulus for the Greater Vernon area. It will contain exhibition space for the museum and the art gallery, meeting spaces, classroom spaces, workshop spaces, performance space, a gift shop, administrative spaces, and a large welcoming lobby! Join us in making this a reality for our community!

EXHIBITIONS

D AV I D A N D J O R D E N D O O D Y ELECTRIC SLEEP Oct 8 - Dec 22 David and Jorden Doody work collaboratively and create sculptural installations which investigates the tactile qualities of sculpture and three-dimensional space in the virtual light of the image explosion of the post internet age. The works in the exhibition are situated in a flux of the screen culture and the omnipresence and proliferation of images which are immaterial, yet they are the representation of three-dimensional archetypes. The artists have the commitment to experiment and improvise, and in the same time they use re-purposed ‘readymade’ objects which compliment their hand built sculptural elements.

Printmaking at UBCO: The Repeatable Image

Members Exhibition: Exposed!

Oct 8 - Dec 22

Nov 5 - Dec 22

This exhibition consists of a number of prints created by past and present students pursuing their BFA degree at UBC Okanagan. Some of the prints were produced by traditional methods which include relief prints, intaglio, and lithography. In addition, Ultra Violet light screen-printing is very popular because of its use of nontoxic materials and the ability to produce highly detailed prints. The exhibition features subject matter which includes questions surrounding the landscape and environmental stewardship, the human condition, and the explortion of formal abstract structures.

Exposed! is our annual members’ exhibition which will provide opportunities to established artists and those working outside the mainstream of artistic production. The exhibiting artists show a variety of approaches in their studio practice which include figurative, landscape, still life, and abstract subject matter. The artwork is produced in an assortment of media, including oil, acrylic and watercolour paintings, prints, drawings, and photography. Exposed! is a great exhibition to check out what our local arts community is creating!

MIDSUMMER’S EVE OF THE ARTS

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT

This year’s 34th annual Midsummer’s Eve of the Arts was a little bit different! We went virtual due to COVID-19 and with all the support and participation of our community, $19,000 was raised for the VPAG! Thank you to all of you who participated in our always popular silent and live auctions, and to all of our volunteers, sponsors, and donors for helping make this amazing event possible. The top sellers for the evening were Rick Bond’s painting Paris Nights for $1200, and Gabrielle Strong’s painting Emerald Coast III for $1150. Thanks to everyone's support, the VPAG can continue to offer programs and exhibitions for our community while growing towards a new facility We hope everyone had a great time and went home with great memories and something to treasure. This was an incredible event and we are looking forward to next year already!

We asked local illustrator Ashleigh Green to create a short video about how VPAG transitioned to an online format during the closure. We transitioned all of our regular programming, like guided tours of exhibitions and interactive tours with the artists! We included educational programming like tutorials based on current exhibitions, and artist talks as well as our signature events, like Riot on the Roof and Midsummer’s Eve of the Arts.
