MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR It is a busy and exciting time here at the VPAG! Not only do we have some exciting programming on the horizon, but work is going on behind the scenes for our new cultural facility. I’m excited to welcome Scott Bertram to the VPAG with his exhibition We Cannot Say It Is There, And Yet We Cannot Say It Isn’t, a series of large-scale abstract paintings. Our annual exhibitions, Art from the Heart, and Art & Soul, from School District No.22 Elementary and High School Students provides the youth of our community with the opportunity to showcase their artistic talent within the walls of a professional art gallery. We are so excited that the Okanagan Print Triennial is right around the corner! Join us in March as we host this international competition and exhibition. This year’s show will feature 28 printmakers from around the world. Poland, Australia, South Korea, Argentina, along with our own beloved Canada are but a few of the Countries represented in this year’s exhibition. New to the OPT 2021 is the live artist talks we will be streaming enabling you, the viewer, to interact with these artists in the safety of your own home as we explore their work. Fast approaching is our annual fundraiser, Midsummer’s Eve of the Arts, on July 21, so mark your calendars! We are hopeful that we will be able to host a live event in some form at the Mackie Lake House, in keeping with the current health regulations at that time. If you would like to volunteer or donate artwork or packages to this year’s MEA please contact us at the gallery. Thank you for your patience and support as we all transition through this challenging time. A big thank you to our sponsors and funders who help ensure we can continue to provide quality programming to our community. See you at the VPAG! Dauna Kennedy, Executive Director

SCOTT BERTRAM
We Cannot Say It Is There, And Yet We Cannot Say It Isn’t Janruary 7 - March 10 Scott Bertram is introducing a new body of large-scale abstract paintings in the exhibition titled We Cannot Say It Is There, And Yet We Cannot Say It Isn’t at the Vernon Public Art Gallery. The paintings in the exhibition are very enigmatic and autonomous in that they do not reference the known world in any way. Formally, the paintings are akin to other nonrepresentational structures which reference and construct deep space. Bertram’s paintings are ambiguous in the sense that they portray space which is often contradictory and the visual structures do not lend themselves to verbal interpretations which is always an issue with non-representational abstraction. This fact is also reflected in Bertram’s mode of operation while creating images without a preconceived idea what the painting will look like once considered finished. His painting process relies on setting up circumstances for the chance and accidents to occur, then accepts the outcomes as a partial solution of his pictorial propositions. We acknowledge the support of the Canada Council for the Arts.

is a new travelling art education initiative created by the VPAG to meet the needs of our schools in the outlying areas of the North Okanagan Region.
This year’s kit focuses on Contemporary Indigenous Art and includes:
A 65 page guide full of information and 10 cross curicular lesson plans inspired by five Indigenous artists Two books created by local Indigenous peoples Art supplies and materials for your class to engage in an art education activity with a printmaking focus 3 original framed artworks from our permanent collection
Teachers are able to sign out the art kit for a four-week period on our website at www. vernonpublicartgallery.com/ regional-reach
At the VPAG, we believe that visual culture should be accessible to all. The idea behind Regional Reach is to make art education accessible to all students who may not be able to attend the gallery in person. The guide covers the importance of art education, biographies of the five chosen Indigenous artists, and a variety of lesson plans inspired by each artist and their artwork. Lesson plans are not solely art education lesson plans, but also meet curriculum outcomes for Social Studies, Language Arts and Science. The length of time it takes to go through the kit depends on the grade level of the class, and whether or not the teacher decides to focus on all five contemporary artists or just one or two. The kit is designed to offer everything you need, and to be flexible at the same time.
