The Cape Canaveral National Cemetery did its first interments on Jan. 12, 2016. Kevin T. Ridgeway, director, said 2021 was a big year. “The burial rate, that increased 16 percent from the previous fiscal year,” he said. In addition, the cemetery got a new director in ‘21. That’s Ridgeway. The inaugural director, Don Murphy, retired at the beginning of last year. The cemetery is now in the education business, too. “Cape Canaveral National Cemetery was selected to host a cemetery director intern,” said Ridgeway. “It’s a yearlong program to train inform and build up future leaders.” Matthew Riggins — of Columbia, Mo. — is interning at Cape Canaveral.
By the numbers Ridgeway said at the end of November — “The total number of interments (was) 11,325.” The cemetery is at 5525 Highway 1, Scottsmoor. The VA’s National Cemetery Administration purchased the 318-acre site for $2.1 million in 2012. The first phase of construction stared in 2015 and has about 19,000 casket and cremation burial sites. Construction phases will progress over about 75 years and the cemetery will have about 163,000 casket and cremation burial sites when completed. There are about 250 interment days a year at national cemeteries. It takes a while for new national cemeteries to get up to their projected interment rates. The National Cemetery Administration estimated that for the foreseeable future interment rates at Canaveral would get to about 2,300 a year. Previously Murphy told Veteran Voice that the first year Cape Canaveral did 1,258 interments. The second year 1,588. That went up to 1,911 the third and 1,996 the fourth. Then the fifth year, 2020, the SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19 pandemic affected everything. On March 23, 2020, a federal directive suspended the cemetery’s interment accouterments, such as volunteer chaplains. The cemeteries resumed full committal services on June 9

that year. There were 1,854 interments. At the end of 2020 the cemetery was averaging 45 interments a week. Now — “We’re averaging about 200 a month,” Ridgeway said.
Missing in America Project Another important number, the director said — “We did have two Missing in America events.” Ridgeway added, “We were able to have one in April. Those servicemembers were in Volusia County. The second ceremony was in December was (servicemembers from) Brevard County.” Nationally the Missing in America Project started in 2007. To understand what the Missing in America Project does, you’ve got to know that funeral homes have unclaimed cremains that stack up in storerooms. Missing in America Project estimates that about 25 percent of those cremains on funeral homes’ shelves are Veterans and spouses. Volunteers get permission from and comb through funeral homes’ records to identify those Veterans. When the Missing in America Project volunteers identify Veterans and spouses it has to get the funeral homes to surrender them, so it can inter them in national cemeteries. That can take some doing sometimes. There are likely several rea-
sons for funeral homes resisting handing over cremains even after decades. After all, if someone comes even after 30 or more years to collect the cremains of a family member, it’d be a bit tough for a funeral home to explain why it’d given them to an unrelated party. Additionally, cremains claimants usually pay the preparation costs. Missing in American Project doesn’t. It asks funeral homes to surrender the Veterans’ cremains for interment in national cemeteries, because it’s the right thing to do. Missing in America Project has volunteer genealogists who seek surviving family members to offer them the chance to have the remains of deceased Veterans it finds. If it fails to find surviving families, or gets their permission, it has an agreement with the National Cemetery Administration to inter the remains of Veterans and their qualifying family members. According to the Missing in America website, www.miap. us, volunteers have searched at 2,530 funeral homes and found 5,741 Veterans’ cremains. It’s interred 5,163. “I’ve been involved in the Missing in America Project since 2009,” said Ridgeway.
This year Ridgeway said the awaited Phase 2 construction should start soon.
“We’re hoping to start that in early, mid- or late spring of ’22,” Ridgeway said. “It should be adding 20,000 additional grave sites over the next couple years.” In all there’ll be seven construction phases. The estimated construction costs will be about $30 million in today’s dollars. Oh, and Ridgeway is looking forward to talking to more Veterans and community organizations. He started in February last year. “For me, it’s almost been a year,” he said. “I cannot believe it. It feels like I just got here. The community has been great. The staff has been great. Notable interments Cape Canaveral National Cemetery is the final resting place for a woman who lived an epic life — Rear Adm. Alene Duerk, the Navy’s first woman admiral. The Seminole County resident died in 2018 at age 98. In accord with her wishes, she was interred in a quiet ceremony surrounded by family and longtime friends. Duerk was well known in Central Florida for her tireless efforts to improve nursing and get it to everybody in need regardless of their financial resources. The University of Central Florida College of Nursing erected a statue of her. Another history-maker interred at Canaveral is Tuskegee Airman Edwin Cowan. His family and local Veterans reinterred his wife Theda and him last year. The pair had been quietly interred at their church in Brevard County. The Brevard Veterans Memorial Center contacted the Cowans’ family members after the Cape Canaveral National Cemetery opened urging them to consider moving Edwin and Theda to a location better suiting their roles in history. Murphy said every Veteran and spouse interred at Canaveral is important. Some interments, of course, get his attention more than others. One is Volusia County’s own Lt. Caleb King, who played football for Daytona Beach’s Warner Christian Academy and the Naval Academy. King was killed in a flight training accident near Naval Air Station Key West in 2018. He was 30.

The Florida Institute of Technology Army ROTC Panther Battalion held their Fall Ceremony to commission eight new Army Second Lieutenants on Friday, December 17. The Commissioning Ceremony was held outdoors at the Florida Tech Pantherium for friends and families. This was the first in-person commissioning ceremony at Florida Tech since the start of the pandemic in 2020. The new Lieutenants took the commissioning oath of office and pinned on their new lieutenant gold bars during the ceremony. They heard messages from Dr. Dwayne McCay, President of Florida Institute of Technology, and The Honorable Patrick J. Murphy, former
Undersecretary of the Army and a prior Congressman from Pennsylvania. They were also congratulated by LTC Jimmy Crook, Florida Tech Professor of Military Science. LTC Crook reminded them of the responsibilities they were undertaking as commissioned officers in the Army. Colonel Steve Bond, US Army-Retired and President of the Cape Canaveral Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America (MOAACC) also spoke at the ceremony. He congratulated the new officers on their achievement, presented them with “Gold Bars” (the rank insignia of Second Lieutenants) on behalf of MOAAC, and wished them the best of luck as they begin their journey as officers in the United States Army.

COLORFUL THEODORE ROOSEVELT DIES ON THIS DATE IN 1919 AT AGE 60

On this date in 1919, Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th president of the United States, died at Sagamore Hill, his estate overlooking New York’s Long Island Sound. He was 60. He famously suffered from chronic asthma as a child, but pursued a life spent as much outdoors as possible. His interests were varied, from science to philosophy. A dynamic and energetic politician, Theodore Roosevelt is credited with creating the modern presidency. As a young Republican, Roosevelt held a number of political posts in New York in the 1880s and ’90s and was a leader of reform Republicans in the state. In 1898, as assistant secretary to the U.S. Navy, Roosevelt vehemently advocated war with Spain. When the Spanish-American War began, he formed the “Rough Riders,” a volunteer cavalry that became famous for its contribution to the United States victory at the Battle of San Juan Hill in Cuba.
The publicity-minded Roosevelt rode his military fame to the New York governor’s seat in 1898 and to the vice presidency in 1900. In 1901, President William McKinley was assassinated, and Roosevelt, 43 years old, became the youngest president ever to assume the office. According to many historians, he is considered one of the five best presidents in U.S. history.
Colorful character He stamped the presidency with a vitality that delighted most Americans and was elected to a second term in 1904. As an American expansionist, Roosevelt asserted his executive powers to defend U.S. interests throughout the Americas as he sought to balance the interests of farmers, workers, and the business class at home. He insisted on a strong navy, encouraged the independence of Panama and the construction of the Panama Canal, promoted the regulation of trusts and monopolies, and set aside land for America’s first national parks and
monuments. In 1906, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his mediation in the negotiations to end the Russo-Japanese War. Arguably one of Roosevelt’s biggest accomplishments is the creation of national parks.
Brand-new party In 1912, three years after finishing his second term, Roosevelt ran for president again as the new Progressive Party candidate. Challenging his former vice president, President William Howard Taft, he campaigned on his “Square Deal” platform of social reform. In November, the divided Republican Party was defeated by Democrat Woodrow Wilson. In the last few years of his life, Roosevelt became a vocal advocate of the U.S. entrance into World War I and even sought to win a commission to lead a U.S. Army division in Europe. President Wilson declined, and after the war Roosevelt was a vocal opponent of his League of Nations. In 1919, Roosevelt died at his home in New York. The
tropical diseases he had contracted during his travels likely caught up with him, and he died at the age of 60.
New aspects come to light According to Michael P. Cullinane, author of “Remembering Theodore Roosevelt: Remembrances of His Contemporaries”: “Equally impressive is his empathy with children. Alice Roosevelt has often been described as an unmanageable youth, but Roosevelt’s sons got into as much trouble. In the oral histories, we learn about how they terrorized staff, ran amok through the White House, and destroyed property. “Roosevelt never scolded his children or their friends, and more often laughed alongside them, showing lenience and a sense of humor. Many more intimate moments spring from the interviews: the political backrooms, dinner parties, even the moment he received news of the death of his son Quentin. With these reminiscences our image of Roosevelt becomes more human and less heroic. We see a father, a friend, and a husband more than a politician or statesman.”

On Jan. 11 Tallahassee will be pomp and circumstance. The Florida Legislature will have its opening session. Gov. Ron DeSantis, a Navy Veteran, will give his State of the State Address. The whole affair will invoke memories of governors and legislators who’ve taken their turns shaping Florida’s past, present and future. One, a World War II Veteran, had a governorship that was tragically short. Less than a year. But, history writer and biographer Robert Buccellato said that Bronze Star recipient, Gov. Daniel “Dan” McCarty, had an outsized influence on what Florida would become. “There was just something about him,” Buccellato said. “Probably other than Reubin Askew, he was one of the only Florida governors who had presidential tender.”
Familiar name McCarty has a familiar name to many Veteran Voice readers. Yes, he’s McCarty as in the McCarty family of St. Lucie County. Surely some readers have spent time at the McCarty Ranch Preserve in Port St. Lucie. Those who haven’t spent time hiking the preserve might have attended, or had children attend, Dan McCarty Middle School in Fort Pierce. Those living in other areas of the Veteran Voice coverage area might remember McCarty Hall at the University of Florida. That was named after him. There’s also the McCarty Woods Conservation Area at the university’s campus. Veteran Voice couldn’t find out by press time if that was named after him or a relative. But, we’d bet dollars to dimes it was named after the Gov. McCarty. In 1956 Gov. LeRoy Collins attended the memorial dedication at the Fort Pierce end of the newly designated Dan McCarty Highway that runs 15 miles between Vero Beach and McCarty’s hometown.
Upstart politician McCarty was born on Jan. 18, 1912. His transplanted, agrarian family had already established its prominence in St. Lucie County. “They came there and brought their ingenuity and their ambition,” Buccellato said. “Their grandfather, they say, was the person who brought the pineapple to Florida.” That was Charles Tobin “C.T.” McCarty in the 1880s. Dan McCarty was active in social clubs and sports throughout school. You

know, captain of the football team, editor-in-chief of the yearbook. That and more. He headed to the University of Florida where he just kept racking up the credits, including in the school’s Army ROTC program. A couple years after graduating, McCarty ran for the Florida House of Representatives. He served in the State House from 1937 to 1941. In his last legislative session, McCarty served as the Speaker of the House. “He was Speaker of the House at 29,” said Buccellato. Of course, World War II came knocking at the end of ’41. McCarty traded his politician’s tie for lieutenant’s bars.
War hero Come June 6, 1944, McCarty was part of Operation Neptune — the Normandy landings. “He was [also] in the Battle of the Bulge,” Buccellato said. “He was all over the Western Front in the closing days of the war. He saw a lot of action.” McCarty was awarded the Purple Heart, the Legion of Merit, and the French Croix de Guerre, along with the previously mentioned Bronze Star. He shot through the ranks — even for wartime — to be-
Buccellato said McCarty was long a down-home progressive by Florida politics standards of the time. He thinks McCarty’s military service and war experiences reinforced his homey progressive bent. He ran for the Democratic Party nomination for governor in 1948. Ran and lost. Another World War II Veteran, Fuller Warren, beat him and would go on to be governor. Like McCarty, Warren was an ambitious youth. He got into the Florida House while still studying at the University of Florida. Warren was also an admitted former member of the Ku Klux Klan. He told the press that meeting the Nazis in war turned him against the Klan at home. McCarty didn’t take the heat and go home. He pretty much just never stopped campaigning for governor after ‘48. “Dan McCarty came about in a time period when a lot of (people in) the state felt silenced,” Buccellato said. “He showed that it is important that there is somebody who when they see injustice, see issues that need to be addressed, that you take a stand and hold up a banner others can flock to.” Come 1952, voters seemed ready for just that sort of man. “I think that was a key component to his victory,” said Buccellato.
Governorship In early January of 1953, wife Olie and Dan packed up their three children and drove from Fort Pierce to Tallahassee. Inauguration Day was Jan. 6. McCarty had plans. He had plans on top of plans. McCarty also had a lurking enemy that he’d cradled between his fingers for years. There was a constant among Florida politicians of those times. “A cigarette went with their daily outfits,” Buccellato said. “Every social interaction you see with them, they were smoking.” Including McCarty. “He had a horse named Lucky, because that was his brand of cigarettes,” explained Buccellato. As in Lucky Strike. That was the bestselling cigarette in the U.S. in the ‘30s and ‘40s. It was also one of the brands included in C-rations during World War II. At 41, McCarty had a heart attack on Feb. 25, 1953. In fairness, it probably wasn’t totally related to cigarette smoking, but that almost certainly played a

K.I.S.S. is a servicemembers care package organization with monthly mailings. “Second Saturday of every month, we’re at various locations throughout Central Florida,” Proctor said. K.I.S.S. has no association with the rock band KISS, as though that needs to be said. But, this is a good place to slip in that founding band member and bassist Gene Simmons has a lifelong warm relationship with servicemembers and Veterans. Veteran Anthony Starace has a message. “The VA is here for you,” he said. “They’re here to do the extra mile.” Veteran Voice met Starace days before he was slated to run The Extra Mile 11K. That was on Saturday, Dec. 18. Starace — the event organizer, too — was slated to run those 11 kilometers, almost 7 miles, starting at Dyer Park. That’s by the Department of Veteran Affairs’ West Palm Beach medical center. That might not sound like much of an accomplishment for a 31-year-old Marine Corps vet. But, Starace made his first visit to a VA medical center in August of 2020. “I went in for my shoulder, and I walked out with cancer,” he said. That is, he got a routine MRI done for his shoulder as part of filing a disability claim with the Veterans Benefits Administration. The medical staff noticed oddities and offered — ordered really — Starace another scan to look for cancer. That scan showed he had cancer and was in his brain. “I became ‘a cancer victim,’ and I (expletive) hated it,” said Starace.
Philippides Starace brought up the story of Philippides. There are two versions. Michael Clark covered both for Runner’s World. One version was popularized in the 19th century and became the inspiration for a 25-mile run at the 1896 Olympics, the first of the modern era.
In that version of the tale, a Soldier at the Battle of Marathon, 490 BCE, saw a Persian ship turn toward Athens after Greek victory was clear. He realized the Persians might be trying to reach Athens to falsely claim victory at the plain of Marathon to get an unearned surrender. That Soldier discarded his weapons and clothes to run the about 25 miles to Athens to, in modern military parlance, make sure the city’s decision-makers had good intel. He reportedly burst into the ecclesia ahead of the Persians, hollered, “We won!,” then died. Another version is the folks in Athens knowing the Persians were heading their way for a war came up with a daring plan to beat the superior force at Marathon. Or, at least to put some serious hurt on the Persians at Marathon before they got to Athens. Come battle day, the plan astonishingly worked and the Athenians inflicted serious casualties on the Persians. The surviving Persians fell back to their ships and started heading toward Athens by sea. The Athenian army dispatched Philippides, or at least a runner, to give a battle report and warning. Philippides got to live in that version. When organizers of the first modern Olympic games were looking for events, famed semanticist Michel Bréal brought up the idea of a long-distance footrace in memorial of the legendary Greek Soldier’s run. By the way, the modern marathon went from 25 to 26.2 miles at the 1908 London Olympics to accommodate a royal family request to start that year’s run

central part in his medical condition. He struggled for months to regain his health, but died in September that year. A harsh political rival, Charley Johns, became acting governor. But, by then McCarty had added his mark to developing state policies, including road infrastructure, and, according to a few sources, opposition to more exploring and drilling for oil in the Sunniland oil trend in South Florida. While there is some drilling in that environmentally sensitive area, Florida’s long resisted becoming a full-on oil state. Johns ran for his own term as governor in 1954. But one of McCarty’s friends — Navy Veteran LeRoy Collins — was determined to wrest the Governor’s Mansion away from the Pork Chop Gang member whom he saw as an unworthy usurper. Collins won the Governor’s Mansion, and, in some ways finished out his friend’s term of office. One thing Buccellato believes McCarty quietly hoped to change as governor was Florida’s draconian segregation laws at the time. When he was inaugurated in 1953, McCarty didn’t stand for the playing of “Dixie.” Although, he was far from being an avowed anti-segregationist. Still, a lot of folks surely noticed that the new governor didn’t stand for “Dixie.” “He was trying to make baby steps in ways LeRoy Collins would be able to do in his second term (as governor),” the biographer said.
Unexpected legacy Time threads the tapestry of events into history in interesting ways. Collins might never have run for governor except for the untimely death of his friend, McCarty. If not for Collins becoming a storied governor, his son, LeRoy Collins Jr., might never have gotten a taste for pursuing politics after separating from the Navy as a rear admiral. If the younger Collins had not run for the Republican nomination for the Senate, he might not have come to the attention of the then newly minted Gov. Charlie Crist. And Crist might not have asked Collins Jr. to lead the Florida Department of Veteran Affairs, a job Collins Jr. seemed custom-made for. Collins served as executive director of the state Veterans department from 2007 till his death in 2010. His name is still, and probably always will be, spoken with unabashed reverence among Florida’s Veterans. Buccellato is the author of the book “Finding Dan McCarty,” which is available at all the well-known booksellers. He also produced a documentary by the same name.
