Veteran Voice is a weekly publication designed to provide information to and about veterans to veterans and to the broader community. Veterans are an integral part of their Florida communities, which currently have individual organizations of their own, such as the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, the Vietnam Veterans of America and many other groups with a narrow focus, but no convenient way to connect to a wider population of veterans and to the community in general within a limited geographic area, their community.

The mission of Veteran Voice is to publish a weekly source of information that will provide, in one place, a listing of resources available to veterans, articles about changes in policies or organizations affecting veterans and events of interest to veterans as well as articles about veterans of interest to the general public.

Veteran Voice LLC is organized as a partnership of experienced newspaper executives with an interest in veterans and in the communities of Florida veterans and friends. Veteran Voice is a start-up intended to address a perceived lack of information readily available to veterans on programs and policies affecting them and objective reporting of veteran affairs to the public.

To our knowledge, and based on comments from leaders of local veterans organizations, there was no media or website currently meeting this need until the launch of Veteran Voice.

Navy christens Expeditionary Sea Base Hershel 'Woody' Williams DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE

The Navy christened the Expeditionary Sea Base future USNS Hershel “Woody” Williams (ESB 4) during a 10 a.m. PDT ceremony, Saturday, Oct. 21, at General Dynamics NASSCO, San Diego.

The Hershel “Woody” Williams is the first ship to bear the name of Marine Corps Chief Warrant Officer Hershel Woodrow Williams, the last surviving Medal of Honor recipient recognized for heroism at the Battle of Iwo Jima during World War II. Maj. Gen. Eric M. Smith, commanding general, 1st Marine Division, delivered the ceremony’s principal address. Williams’s daughters, Tracie Jean Ross and Travie Jane Ross, who served as the ship’s sponsors, broke a bottle of sparkling wine across the bow to formally christen the ship, a time-honored Navy tradition.

“This ship honors a man who dedicated his

life to service-heroic service as a Marine, and continued service to his fellow veterans,” said Richard V. Spencer, Secretary of the Navy.

“This dedication will live on in USNS Hershel ‘Woody’ Williams as the ship is deployed around the world bringing additional capability to our growing fleet.

“The ceremony represents the dedication to service demonstrated by the men and women who worked tirelessly to build this ship and their commitment to quality and innovation.”

The Hershel “Woody” Williams is optimized to support a variety of maritime-based missions and designed around four core capabilities: aviation facilities, berthing, equipment staging support, and command and control assets.

ESBs can be enhanced to meet special operations force missions through increased communications, aviation and unmanned aircraft system support.

Built by General Dynamics NASSCO, the Montford Point-class is comprised of five ships

across two variants: Expeditionary Transfer Docks and Expeditionary Sea Bases. USNS Montford Point (ESD 1), USNS John Glenn (ESD 2), and USS Lewis B. Puller (ESB 3) have been delivered to the fleet. ESB 4 is planned to join the fleet in 2018, with ESB 5 to follow in 2019.

The platform has an aviation hangar and flight deck that include two operating spots capable of landing MH-53E equivalent helicopters, accommodations, work spaces, and ordnance storage for an embarked force.

The platform will also provide enhanced command and control, communications, computers, and intelligence capabilities to support embarked force mission planning and execution.

The reconfigurable mission deck area can store embarked force equipment including mine sleds and rigid hull inflatable boats.

As part of his position with the Medal of Honor Foundation, Williams helped dedicate the Gold Star Mothers and Families Monument at Veterans Memorial Park, Port St. Lucie, in 2016.

Sea Cadet, Petty Officer 3rd Class (PO-3) Gabriel L. Waldorff, graduated from the Great Lakes Navy Recruit Training on Sept. 29, and is currently attending Seabee Training in Northern California.

He was a member of the David McCampbell Battalion, Sea Cadets, based in Melbourne.

While a Sea Cadet from January 2015 to January 2017, Petty Officer Waldorff completed many correspondence courses for advancement in rank, and attend several trainings as a Sea Cadet, including Recruit Training, Public Safety, Police Master-atArms, Petty Officer Leadership Academy, and Drug Abuse Training, for which he received several ribbons and appurtenances.

Petty Officer Waldorff was also a member of our unit Color Guard Team, and functioned as the MAA at all drills and functions, and participated in the units Field Training Exercises (FTX’s).

Cadet Waldorff entered the Navy Great Lakes training on Aug. 1, 2017, and upon graduation was awarded his E-3 (Seaman) rank for his prior Sea Cadet Service.

Seaman Waldorff was part of the 947th “Triple Threat” division at training, and he was also a member of the choir that sang at

The Emory L. Bennett State Veterans’ Nursing Home has, at press time, 17 beds open.

The Florida Department of Veteran Affairs is looking for qualifying veterans to fill them soon.

“That’s a state-of-the-art, modern facility,” said Steve Murray, communications director at the state’s veterans department. “It’s a beautiful campus. It enjoys such wonderful community involvement and support for the residents there.”

When Hurricane Irma was approaching, residents, families and staff made decisions that moved some to the Orlando VA’s Lake Nona medical facility and others. Most residents stayed at the state veterans nursing homes during the storm, because they’re fortified against storms to shelter in place.

“In Daytona Beach, prior to the storm, we identified the residents with the most serious medical issues,” Murray said.

For example, those who required kidney dialysis and continuous oxygen.

“We did that at our Daytona Beach home — placing them in VA facilities that had a level of care beyond skilled nursing.”

Vacancies for repairs

Additionally, the hurricane hit around the time crews were installing new lifts in rooms at the Bennett and other veterans homes. The homes, including Bennett, had let some beds stay empty during the lift installations.

“Post Hurricane Irma, we find ourselves with a lot of vacancies at our Daytona Beach facility,” Murray said.

Which is rare. The state’s six operating veterans nursing homes are usually at capacity.

The homes have about 120 beds each, as does the state’s veterans domiciliary in Lake City. Last year the VA listed Florida as a highneed state for new veterans nursing homes.

It estimates that with the state’s about 1.5 million veterans, it needs more than 4,000 veterans home beds.

The state is now working on opening two additional facilities. One will be in Port St. Lucie, the Ardie R. Copas State Veterans’ Nursing Home. The other is an as-yet unnamed home that’ll open at a former VA nursing home at the Lake Baldwin medical center in Orlando.

Construction on the Copas home should start about this time next year. Work on refurbishing the Orlando facility is not yet scheduled.

First in the state The Bennett home was the state’s first veterans nursing home. It opened in 1993. The last home opened in 2010 in St. Augustine.

“It has been upgraded through the years,” Murray said.

He said the Daytona home is deeply woven into the local culture.

“Community groups not only come into the home, but (some) sponsor field trips outside the home.”

— started by a former co-owner of Daytona’s WHOG radio — raises money primarily for residents of the Bennett home. Among other things, the group takes the residents to area restaurants and events.

Members of the veterans athletic organization Team Red, White & Blue Daytona Beach regularly go to the Bennett home to talk to the residents.

Murray said organizations have taken Bennett residents to races at the nearby Daytona Beach International Speedway.

“It’s not just people being dropped off and left unattended,” Murray said.

He said that a qualifying veteran from anywhere in Florida can go to the Daytona home, even if others are closer. To qualify, a veteran must have an honorable discharge, Florida residency, and certification of need for assisted living or skilled nursing care as determined by a VA physician.

The nation is heading into flu season, and veterans can help combat this killer by getting free vaccinations.

“It’s the first and best way to protect themselves and their families from getting the flu,” Vincent McKilligan, employee health nurse at the West Palm Beach VA Medical Center, said.

The Department of Veteran Affairs’ medical center has walk-in flu clinics going until February.

Those enrolled in the Veterans Health Administration need only walk into the West Palm facility from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays and ask for a free vaccination. The VA medical center is at 7305 N. Military Trail.

“They’ve done research and studies about how well (vaccination) works,” Killigan said. “Nothing is 100 percent, obviously, but for the most part it can help everybody to defend themselves against the flu.”

Benefits of vaccination Vaccination has a domino effect that helps others. Imagine a giant floor lined with winding rows of dominos. Vaccinated individuals are like dominos removed from those rows stopping the tumbling line. When the virus reaches a vaccinated person, he or she doesn’t contract and spread it down the line.

Since most have had various strains of flu, it’s easy to think of it as a painful but temporary sickness. Oftentimes, flu is deadly. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that there are huge variations in flu-related deaths every year.

During the 2011-2012 flu season, about 12,000 Americans died from flu-related complications.

That shot to an estimated 56,000 the next flu season.

While most can combat the various influenza viruses, those in weakened states often can’t.

Occasionally a particularly virulent strain appears. The 1918 flu pandemic, which lasted to 1920, shocked the world. A strain of H1N1 infected about 500 million

with a seemingly unstoppable reach. Researchers believe it killed 50 to 100 million. Unlike other flu strains, this one killed younger, healthier people. Researchers believe that’s because it supercharged the victims’ immune systems, a cytokine storm, which is what killed them.

Detective work Each year, the CDC takes educated guesses as to which influence viruses will find favorable conditions to proliferate. Those guesses show up in the annual flu vaccines.

“This particular year we’re giving out the quadrivalent vaccine,” McKilligan said.

That’s a vaccine for the H1N1, H3N2, along with the Yamagata and Victoria B strains.

The Orlando VA Medical Center at Lake Nona will have free flu shots for walk-in veterans weekdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. until Nov. 3. That’s at 13800 Veterans Way, Orlando.

Veterans enrolled in the Veterans Health Administration can also get free flu shots at Wal-

greens until the end of March.

To get the free flu shot, all the veteran must do is have ready photo ID and verification of VA enrollment.

McKilligan said while we’re now in flu season, the thick of it will start in December. He said that’ll continue until March. He cautioned that some don’t believe they need flu shots, because they never seem to get the bug. That, he explained, can be an illusion created by having an immune system that doesn’t react harshly to the flu.

“You can be a carrier of the flu and not get sick and pass it on to others,” he said.

McKilligan said some veterans worry about mercury in flu vaccines. He said the vaccines used at VA medical centers doesn’t have mercury. He’s unsure about the vaccines Walgreens uses.

However, he said there’s more mercury in a lot of seafood than the vaccines.

You’re a veteran who has come off of multiple deployments around the world, where you’ve been asked to do more than you’ve ever done. You’ve been shocked, suffering PTSD or other injuries. Your life is changed forever. How do you go forward?

The answer: Man’s best friend, a dog. And not just any dog.

Dogs For Life in Vero Beach has been dedicated to matching veterans with helper dogs for many years. On Oct. 21, it held its 16th annual fundraiser in Vero Beach to match up veterans with helper dogs — at no cost to themselves — and it turned out to be a fun day for Halloweeners who wanted to make a difference.

“Hobo Jim” provided music, and the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office gave a K-9 demonstration.

Hundreds of dollars’ worth of items were raffled off.

Dogs For Life has made a huge difference in the lives of many people. People who can’t hear properly — people who can’t see.

Its training programs give people access to emergency services that they never would have had before. Alert them when someone knocks at the door. Dial 911 if need be. Their contributions are unmatched.

So, it’s not only veterans — but if you’re a veteran, and anyone can help you, even if it’s a dog — especially, in many cases — it is a lifeline.

That’s where Dogs For Life comes in.

For many years, now, Dogs For Life, by hooking up veterans with dogs who are specially trained, has provided veterans with the literal lifeline. Iraq and Afghanistan veterans come back home with psychological worries such as “spaces.” Their dogs help them evaluate their “spaces” to make them feel safe. The trained dogs can calm a person after nightmares, and create boundaries in crowds.

Sometimes it’s the difference between being completely withdrawn or being a functioning person in society.

It’s not only PTSD that Dogs For Life trains for. Hearing, mobility and sight issues can be taken care of as well. The dogs even have a special phone they can use to dial 911, if necessary.

All that highly specialized training takes money, as might be expected. That’s why the Howl-OWeen fundraiser is so important (besides being a lot of fun). It ensures that veterans can receive the dogs and training they need, at no cost to themselves.

Veteran Voice joins SEAL Swim Charities to Grind down death by suicide among veterans Patrick McCallister FOR VETERAN VOICE

It was 4 a.m. in downtown Orlando — 48 cyclists and numerous volunteers were surprisingly alert. Excitement mixed with a bit of fear is an amazing stimulant.

Many did last-minute bike checks.

Some drank coffee. Some excitedly talked with their friends. Ahead of us was 125 grueling cycling miles to Fort Pierce’s National Navy UTD-SEAL Museum where we’d stay overnight.

This was the start of the fourth annual Warrior Grind Charity Bike Ride organized by SEAL Swim Charities to help Operation Restored Warrior with its lifeand-death mission — reducing death by suicide among veterans with traumatic brain injuries and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Veteran Voice — cofounded by an avid cyclist, the late Ted Wilson, a partner and co-founder of the newspaper — joined for our first year.

Our coverage of veterans issues has made us painfully aware that death by suicide occurs more frequently among veterans in every adult cohort than the general population.

Some good news As Veteran Voice has reported, some progress has happened in reducing death by suicide among veterans. The rate seems to be about 20 a day now, down from about 22 a day a few years ago.

Doesn’t sound like many, perhaps, 20 a day, but, put another way, that’s 7,300 veterans who die by suicide a year. If there’s actually been a 9 percent reduction thanks to numerous efforts by groups such as SEAL Swim as seems the case, that’s more than 650 veterans’ lives spared premature death by suicide a year.

Gearing up I was among the cyclists who hadn’t picked up their Warrior Grind jerseys the evening before the ride. Someone handed it to me. On the left sleeve was the description of what my ’87 Bianchi bicycle and I’d be doing the next two days: 250 miles in 36 hours.

A hundred questions raged in my mind. Did I pick the right bike from my fleet for this arduous ride? Did I pick the right saddle?

Did I have all the right equipment in my roadside emergency kit? Did

I train enough to make this long a ride? Could I do this? You can be sure, nearly every other rider was thinking the same sorts of questions.

Here’s the thing — veterans experiencing suicidal ideation experience raging questions every time they wake. Add TBI/PTSD to that and life, for them, is uncertainties that turn the routine into challenges. Can I go to work today and not kill myself when I’m frustrated? Can I walk into the grocery store and buy my children milk without having a meltdown?

Veteran Voice writer Patrick McCallister cycled with 47 others for 250 miles to help raise awareness about and funds to combat death by suicide among veterans. This is the first year Veteran Voice has participated in the Warrior Grind Charity Bike Ride.

Enthusiastic start We headed out, an enthusiastic group, hyped to do the first 125 miles. It’s similarly the case that veterans with brain injuries and service-related anxiety disorders often rush forward at first convinced they got this and don’t need help.

As the day wore on, energy and enthusiasm waned. Saddle soreness started setting in. Legs and necks started aching. Then there were the bridges in Cocoa about 60 miles into the ride mocking our enthusiasm. For veterans struggling with suicidal ideation, there are innumerable challenges that come when they’re feeling mentally sore and tired. I thought about that when I saw the first bridge.

Meeting challenges Some riders are better conditioned than others. Some of us would continue on at strong paces to meet the next challenges, such as the bridge at Sebastian Inlet.

Some would struggle more with each mile, yet resist quitting.

There are dozens of variables over which riders have little or no control deciding who’d be in what category. It’s the same among veterans experiencing suicidal ideation. Some have seemingly random good fortune — such as chancing to have the right friends — helping them through the challenges. Others aren’t as fortunate and need others to be aware and offer help.

I ended up with two other riders for the last 40 miles on State Road A1A, Kay and FJ. We helped one another by taking turns at the front absorbing the headwinds, so the other riders got a break. We all confessed that our minds screamed more each mile, “Will this road ever end?!” There might have been a bit of profanity thrown in that I’m leaving out here.

But, for most of them, there’s not a great moment of relief when they see the end of the struggle like we did by spotting the UDT-SEAL Museum. They just have to keep going every day unsure of when they’ll arrive to a place of comfort that signals the end of their extraordinary struggles.

On to the final lap All of us riders got showers, food, and, the lucky ones, some sleep.

Then there was 3:30 a.m. the next morning. Those who slept, woke to reveille played over the museum’s sound system. At 4:30 a.m., we were again lined up to ride the 125 miles back to Orlando. This time, there was no excited chatter. There was only dread and resolve. Pushing onto the saddle and feeling the soreness made everything in us scream, “No, not again!” That beautifully captured what it’s like for veterans with suicidal ideation to wake every day.

But at the last stop, Valencia College, a man walked out of the building. He looked at my fellow riders and the volunteers and

turned to me.

“What is this?” he asked me.

“It’s the Warrior Grind,” I responded. “We’re cycling 250 miles in 36 hours to raise awareness about and money to help combat death by suicide among veterans.”

A tear formed on his dark face under his large, brown eyes.

“Man, that hits close to home,” he said. “A buddy of mine killed himself a few months after my unit got home.”

He offered his hand, thanking me for what we were doing.

Suddenly I was up to the last 12 miles of the ride.

Co-organizer Bryan Nelson tells me the ride raised more than $21,000. That’ll help put about 10 veterans through Operation Restored Warrior programs. One rider, Kay Carver, raised $2,445, to claim top spot for fundraising.

Beyond the call of duty - Marines military training proves instrumental in assisting Vegas injured David Bickel

Two Marine Corps helicopter mechanics who assisted in victim evacuation and casualty care at an Oct. 1 Las Vegas concert that became a mass-casualty attack recalled their experience recently.

Sgt. Michael Vura and Cpl. Austin Cox, Marine Light Attack Helicopter Training Squadron 303, Camp Pendleton, Calif., were attending the concert, heard the shots and took action.

“Myself and Sergeant Vura headed to the concession area of the festival, which is toward the back of the concert area,” Cox said. “We heard the initial shots and didn’t know if it was the speakers making noise or actual gunfire. ... Then the shots went off again, and we knew there was a threat.”

“People were trying to get out of the area but were trapped in by crowd-control barricades,” Vura recalled. “We positioned ourselves in between the stage and the barricades and started assisting people in climbing the barricade and running for cover.”

Evacuating the Injured In the process of assisting victims trying to find cover, the Marines came across several people who had been shot. They evacuated the injured victims while applying pressure and using makeshift tourniquets when needed.

“We came across a man that was hit in the chest,” Vura said.

“We moved some stuff out from under the stage and told his significant other to maintain pressure on the wound until rescue personnel could assist.”

“As we turned to walk away, we found a girl that had a gunshot

wound to her neck,” Cox said.

“We immediately pulled her over the barricade and started applying pressure to her neck. There was more blood coming from another wound, and we found that she had been hit in the back as well.”

At this point, Vura and Cox separated. Cox stayed with the wounded woman and assisted in getting her to the hospital.

“I remember the last thing she did when we got to the hospital was give me a thumbs up,” recalled Cox. “I knew she was going to fight and that I could leave her in the hands of the doctors.”

Continuing to Help Vura continued helping victims escape and treated more wounded until the rescue teams arrived on scene. “I started making my way around the barricades, and myself and another individual made some makeshift stretchers to carry the wounded to safety,”

he said. “During that process, we carried around five to six wounded individuals, as well as several deceased bodies, out. At that point, SWAT arrived and secured the area. ... I just walked to the strip, sat down and tried to process everything that just happened.”

Many would say these Marines went above and beyond the call of duty and demonstrated characteristics that are instilled in every Marine during training and life in the Marine Corps. However, they have no desire to be recognized for their actions.

“I went to this country concert to get away from all of my life’s problems, and it became the realest moment of my life,” Vura said. “Remember the basics and know that something like this could happen at any moment.”

“With Sergeant Vura there, I had more courage than I would have had on my own,” Cox said.

“We were there when the people affected needed us. ... We are Marines 24/7.”
