While the U.S. Navy celebrated its 245th birthday this October, the Airborne Command & Control Logistics Community on Oct. 21 marked a longevity milestone, the 60th anniversary of the maiden E-2 flight. While the U.S. Navy celebrated its 245th birthday this October, the Airborne Command & Control Logistics Community marked a longevity milestone: the 60th anniversary of the maiden E-2 flight, Oct. 21. On Oct. 21, 1960, the first flight of the E-2A occurred out of Bethpage, New York. Five years later, on Oct. 19, 1965, the U.S. Navy conducted its first E-2 deployment. “For 60 years, the E-2 has been the eye in the sky for the U.S. Navy,” said Capt. Michael France, Commander, Airborne Command & Control Logistics Wing, who has flown more than 4,700 hours flying 25 different aircraft. “The E-2 has continued to manage the airspace in both times of peace and in times of conflict, and we are grateful for every pilot, maintainer, and aircrew who have supported this community.”

Test pilot During an interview, Rear Adm. John Meier, Commander, Naval Air Force Atlantic on the admiral’s All Things Naval Aviation podcast, France discussed the test pilot who flew the first E-2.

“Oct. 21, 1960 was the first flight of the E-2 and was flown by test pilot Tom Attridge,” said France, who added that from the first test to today, the E-2 community is involved in three major transitions. “We are just over 50 percent complete with transitioning squadrons from the E-2C to the E-2D, as well as moving from E-2D to E-2D aerial refueling and the mission systems going from DSSC 2 to DSSC 3. An E-2D with Aerial Refueling and DSSC 3 will provide persistence on station with tremendous mission capability.”

Evolution of Air Wing Meier discussed how the advancements in the E-2 community to the E-2D Aerial Refueling serves as an example of the true strength of carrier aviation and the evolution of the Air Wing. “When we talk about the evolution of the Air Wing and what makes a Carrier Air Wing so relevant is the fact that it brings its own airborne early warning, it brings its own airborne electronic attack, it brings its own organic refueling capability, and a whole host of long-range detection and command and control,” said Meier. The all-weather, carrier-based platform has continued to increase its capability over the past six decades with the introduction of the E-2D Advanced Hawkeye in 2010. Typically, on any given deployment the E-2 is the first to launch and the last to recover on the flight deck due

to the important role it serves for the Carrier Strike Group. “The E-2 continues its long history of deploying and providing mission critical capabilities to the fleet,” said France, who added that the capabilities of a command & control platform are significantly advanced with the advent of the E-2D. The technological advancements of the E-2D expand the tactical capabilities of the aircraft within its preexisting mission set. The APY-9 radar enables detection of smaller contacts and at greater ranges, while the weapons system suite quickly processes and relays this information to the Carrier Strike Group. As part of the Air Wing of the Future, the E-2D will maximize the offensive power of the Carrier Air Wing. “The radar, radios and datalinks have improved significantly over the years, and with each new generation, such as the E-2D, the Navy has successfully learned how to leverage those advanced capabilities to our asymmetric advantage,” said France. France added that having the capability to exploit Hawkeye radar technology for earlier and precise detection is a game changer. The E-2 community supports a variety of mission sets, including Airborne Early Warning, battle management command and control, strike and intercept control, maritime domain awareness, border and coastline protection, air traffic control, search and rescue coordination, and humanitarian assistance.

SPY ON THE SKY Axis aircraft couldn’t slip past the Southern Signal Corps

MPs raise the flag at Camp Murphy, home of the Southern Signal Corps School. The school played a pivotal role in American victory in World War II. But the members of the Army Signal Corps Electronics Training Group couldn’t utter a word of it.

Patrick McCallister FOR VETERAN VOICE

pmccallister@veteranvoiceweekly.com

What the soldiers were doing at Camp Murphy near Stuart was top secret. So secret they were prohibited from saying a word outside the camp that we now regularly hear on the 6 o’clock news. Early in World War II the Luftwaffe demonstrated that air dominance was the new military high ground. The crushing Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor came not from battleships. It came from the aircraft carriers. America needed a new kind of soldier and sailor who could level the aerial battlefield. Military commanders knew just where to turn. Before the CIA, NSA and even OSS, there was the USASC, the Army Signal Corps. The corps had pioneered intelligence gathering and transmission to military commanders in the 1860s. From the start the Signal Corps embraced cutting-edge tech such as the portable Beardslee Telegraph. Before America’s entry into World War II, the Signal Corps recruited brilliant minds at top universities. In June of 1942 they gathered in Martin County to test, perfect, then literally write the book on the word that must not be said.

Radio detection and ranging

These days if one drops “radio detection and ranging” into conversation it’d confuse people. These days we freely use an acronym that was once spoken in hush among generals, admirals and intelligence chiefs looking over their shoulders — radar. It was the secret weapon that effectively won the Battle of Britain and America was going to perfect it.

A curious discovery The fact radio waves bounce off solid objects had been known since Heinrich Hertz noticed it in the 1880s. When Alexander Popov was working on a system of wireless communication for the Russian navy in the 1890s, he noted an interference beat caused by a third vessel passing near two testing ships. He made a note in a report this observation could be developed to spot distant and obscured ships. And the scientific curiosity sat for about a decade. Another man noticed it, too, apparently independently of Popov: German Christian Huelsmeyer.

The telemobiloscope In 1904 Huelsmeyer took out a patent

for the telemobiloscope. He touted it as a way to improve shipping safety. After a public demonstration a journalist at Amsterdam’s De Telegraaf noted the telemobiloscope, which couldn’t yet determine object distances, might be handy for warfare. Oh, and the Wright Flyer had just made the first controlled, sustained flight of a heavier-than-air aircraft in December of 1903. Aerial warfare was on its way.

Robert Watson-Watt In 1916, as the Great War raged, Robert Watson-Watt got a job at the War Office to look into using radio waves to accurately detect thunderstorms. No one apparently had thought about using the same radio tech to detect the German zeppelins that were bombing Britain with near impunity. Upstart air defenses couldn’t reach the zeppelins in time to stop or catch them.

After the war airplane technology rapidly improved. In the 1920s that was no big deal to the British military. Come the 1930s, that was fast changing and minds were beginning to consider the terrifying prospect of massive aerial bombardment by swift planes rather than lumbering zeppelins. In 1935 Watson-Watt wrote a report to the Air Ministry with a practical idea for nullifying the surprise element planes possessed with radio detection and ranging, RADAR.

The race to RADAR He wasn’t alone. Other nations were on the hunt for RADAR, even if they had different terms for it. It was the cloak-anddagger intrigue of the day. The one who perfected it could suppress the power airplanes gave enemies, while maximizing the power of their own.

To the Editor: Did you know that 1-in-2 Americans know someone who has been affected by opioid addiction? For me, combating the opioid crisis facing our country is very personal. When I woke up at Walter Reed after being injured in Afghanistan, I found myself on about 20 different drugs I never imagined being on before. It didn’t take long for me to realize that my toughest challenge was not the pain of my injury, but rather ending my reliance on the opioids I took to manage the pain.

It is an honor to represent you in Congress. Sincerely,

Thankfully, with the support of my family and those around me, I was able to get off those prescription drugs. I know that this is not an easy thing to accomplish, which is why I’ve worked hard in Congress to help pass nearly 50 bills to

CARTOON CAREER Artist followed his first love in lifelong character creations

Source: Wikimedia Commons A cartoon from the series Up Front With Mauldin, satirizing the American media’s reporting on World War II. When Bill Mauldin received the Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning in 1945, this cartoon was cited as an exemplar of his work.

Mary Kemper STAFF WRITER

mkemper@veteranvoiceweekly.com

Everyone who served in World War II knew “G.I. Willie” and “G.I. Joe” — they appeared in Stars and in Stripes newspapers, everywhere troops were deployed. Their creator, Bill Mauldin, was born on this day in 1921 in New Mexico. He won Pulitzer Prizes in 1945 and 1959 for his cartoon work. Mauldin knew from an early age that he wanted to make cartooning his career, and after high school, began studying toward that goal at Chicago’s Academy of Fine Art. But World War II put the brakes on. He’d scarcely begun his studies of the U.S. Army’s 45th Division. But the war didn’t even slow his career down. Instead, it inspired him. In 1940, he created Willie and Joe, a couple of cartoon soldiers, for the division’s newspaper. They caught on with soldiers everywhere, so in 1944 Mauldin was cartooning full time for Stars & Stripes, also a military newspaper, but one that served the entire U.S. Army. Mauldin’s cartoons were syndicated by United Fea-

tures, alongside “The Captain & the Kids” and “Nancy.”

First Pulitzer Prize In 1945, he won his first Pulitzer Prize for newspaper cartooning, and published his first book — “Up Front,” which reprinted dozens of Willie and Joe cartoons, featuring Maul-

din’s comments on the real-life situation his fictional characters were in. It has stayed in print for decades, and even now stands as one of the most true-to-life accounts of the typical American soldier’s life during World War II. More books followed — “Back Home,” “Bill Mauldin in Korea” “The Brass Ring” and

several others.

Eclectic career He also wrote a few short stories, and appeared in the 1951 movie, “The Red Badge of Courage.” He won a second Pulitzer in 1959, so it was no surprise when, two years later, he was awarded the National Cartoonists’ Society’s Reuben Award, as Cartoonist of the Year. By that time, he was working as editorial cartoonist for The St. Louis Post-Dispatch. United Features had found his cartoons hard to sell in many markets, because of his tendency not to pull punches when cartooning about McCarthyism or The Ku Klux Klan, for example — and he’d been so discouraged that for a few years during the 1950s, he’d actually given up cartooning altogether. It was a mistake he didn’t make again — but he did find larger urban areas, where a wider range of opinion has always flourished, more receptive to his viewpoints. Mauldin moved to The Chicago SunTimes in 1962, and stayed there for many years. By the time he retired in 1992, Mauldin’s cartoons were syndicated to about 250 papers. He died in 2003, aged 81.

A man made by war Patrick McCallister FOR VETERAN VOICE

pmccallister@veteranvoiceweekly.com

Ian Lancaster Fleming was a ne’er-dowell. He left college early, washed out of military academy without a commission, failed the foreign office test, got an underpaid job at Reuters, and was inept at finance — the thing that made his family wealthy. Like so many middle children from wellto-do British families, Fleming filled the holes failure left in him with heavy drinking, heavy smoking, and womanizing. He filled his mind with motorsports as his life wrecked before it got to the first turn. But then Fleming got his lucky break. World War II. War fired Fleming’s imagination more than women and fast cars. He thought of dozens of ways to fool the enemy. Thanks to his family connections, he had a chance to do more than impotently imagine how one could go about espionage.

Paris, 1940 In June 1940, a 32-year-old from the Office of the Admiralty and Marine Affairs codenamed “17F” was in Paris as Nazi forces closed in on the City of Lights. His job was to collect Secret Intelligence Service papers and cash from their hiding place at Rolls Royce’s French office. With the German military closing in fast, 17F headed to the British Consulate to destroy documents to keep them from Nazi eyes. He slipped south in the night to Bordeaux, then into Spain and Por-

tugal to make good his escape back to British soil. 17F got to London in time for the Luftwaffe bombers, the Blitz, the Battle of Britain. As Hurricanes and Spitfires fought off the bombers above, 17F set to work figuring out small but consequential ways to send the war back to German soil. Others would fight the Nazis with guns and bombs. 17F would fight them with deceit and misdirection, guile and even guilt when needed. 17F was a natural predator who lacked the great white shark’s raw power. No, 17F was built for and thrived at the Wobbegong shark’s patient subterfuge. He’d fit perfectly in a 007 story as a minor character — if only 17F wasn’t the man who’d written the first 12 novels and two books of short stories featuring Bond, James Bond.

London, 1908 Fleming was born in 1908 in upscale London to a banking and finance family. His grandfather founded Robert Fleming & Co. He was the second of four children born to Valentine and Evelyn Fleming. The brothers would gain a maternal half-sister in the 1920s. War crashed into Fleming’s life around the age people start forming consistent memories — 6. It was 1914. The Great War exploded in Europe. Fleming’s father, a Member of Parliament, joined the Queen’s Own Oxfordshire Hussars and headed to Belgium and France for the Great War. He didn’t return home. He died in battle when Fleming was 8. Winston Churchill wrote the senior

Fleming’s obituary. Fleming’s mother stepped into the role of being both parents. His elder brother, Peter, too, set out to be a good influence to Michael, Richard and, of course, Ian. To little avail it was for the rebellious Fleming. His mother sent him to preparatory school to make lifelong contacts to propel his business success. That only got Fleming bullying and misery.

Eton College, 1921 In 1921 Fleming headed to Eton College where he was a lackluster student, but a good athlete. He worked as an editor on the school’s magazine, The Wyvern. Fleming started reading Bulldog Drummond novels and short stories. Herman Cyril “H.C.” McNeile created the fictional gentleman adventurer who’d appear in print, stage, radio plays, television and films. Bulldog Drummond inspired Fleming to write a short story, “The Ordeal of Caryl St. George,” for The Wyvern. By all accounts it was a good bit of writing with a dull story to tell. Eton officials talked Fleming’s mother into pulling him out early and sending the irreverent misfit to the Royal Military College, so he could gain a commission in the armed forces and maybe make something of himself. Fleming washed out in a year. His mother sent Fleming to Austria to a school run by a former British spy and his novelist wife to get the lad ready for the Foreign Office exam. Fleming would go on to fail the government exam. Fleming found his own job at

SIGNAL from page 3

The concept of the technology was widely known. It was a topic that came up in Popular Science. But the nuts-andbolts of making it practical for use — that was a closely-guarded military and intelligence secret all over the world. World War II came. Continental Europe fell quickly to the Luftwaffe, to the blitzkrieg. The Nazis turned their bombers across the English Channel like their predecessors had sent zeppelins in the Great War. This time the Royal Air Force met them with Hawker Hurricanes and Submarine Spitfires thanks to Watson-Watt’s top secret radar. That, by the way, earned him knighthood, so he’s now properly called Sir Robert Watson-Watt.

Electronics Training Group Before Pearl Harbor, the Army formed a small unit in the Signal Corps — the Electronics Training Group. Members had to have degrees in electrical engineering or physics. After a short class on what America had for radio detec-

tion and ranging, they went to England to work for months as student observers at radar stations. The British might not have liked it, but it was part of the Lend-Lease deal. And it was all top secret. Some of those men from the Electronics Training Group formed the Southern Signal Corps School near Stuart. Camp Murphy. They started writing the first radar training manuals. Soon the Signal Corps transferred all aircraft warning training there. Murphy became a small city of almost 12,00 acres with 850 officers and 5,800 enlisted men living in and using about 1,000 buildings. Some of those buildings were banks, churches, movie theaters and bowling allies. Camp Murphy was made to never leave to reduce the risk of compromise. To put the camp’s importance in perspective, the U.S. spent more money developing radar technology than building the atomic bomb. The camp closed after the war and the land eventually transferred to the state. Today the same land is Jonathan Dickinson State Park, which hides the top secret radar school and development center right out in the open. It’s at 16450 S.E. Federal Highway, Hobe Sound.

Weekly Briefs System Increment II, or MTRS II, is a remotely operated, medium-sized robotic system that enables EOD units to detect, confirm, identify and dispose of unexploded explosive ordnance and other hazards from a safe distance. The MTRS II replaces the decade-old Air Force Medium Sized Robot, or AFMSR, and provides a more intuitive and user-friendly experience, Frewin said. “Much like iPhones and laptops, this technology moves at such a rapid speed; the difference in capabilities between the MTRS II and the AFMSR are significant,” he said. “The MTRS II controller is comparable to an Xbox or PlayStation-style controller – something the younger generation can pick up and immediately use with ease.” While the AFMSR technology was already outdated, the need to replace it became more dire after Hurricane Michael destroyed all robots in the repair facility at Tyndall AFB in October 2018. With support from the Air Force Installation and Mission Support Center, AFCEC was able to develop and field the new system in less than two years.

Marines deploy brand-new tech The Marine Corps continuously works toward enhancing their operational capabilities while performing amphibious operations to save lives and ensure mission success. For the first time ever, Marines with Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 163, Marine Aircraft Group 16, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, launched four oceanographic sensors from MV-22B Ospreys into the Pacific Ocean as part of Trident Warrior 20. By deploying these sensors, Marines were able to capture critical information about features that increase battlespace awareness. “The ability to deploy these sensors from the MV-22 is important because it provides a unique capability for a new type of aircraft,” said Steven Jayne, a senior scientist with Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. “Because of how accurate the sensors are, commanders can ensure a safer environment for future amphibious operations.”

Air Force deploys EOD robots

Space Force creates 1st field command

The Air Force Civil Engineer Center’s Readiness Directorate made its first delivery of the new medium-size explosive ordnance disposal robot to the field Oct. 15, to Tyndall Air Force Base. Over the next 16-18 months, AFCEC will deliver 333 high-tech robots to every EOD flight Air Force-wide, said Master Sgt. Justin Frewin, AFCEC EOD equipment program manager. Each active-duty, Guard and Reserve flight will receive 3-5 robots. The Man Transportable Robot

In an activation ceremony at Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado, today, Chief of Space Operations Gen. John “Jay” Raymond established Space Operations Command, the U.S. Space Force’s first of three field commands. Lt. Gen. Stephen Whiting, who promoted earlier in the day, assumed command of the new unit, which is mostly formed from the former Air Force units 14th Air Force and Air Force Space Command.

James Bond drops in on Florida Ann Charteris, to visit St. Petersburg before heading by plane to Jamaica. The 1959 novel “Goldfinger” opens in Miami. There, 007 chances to meet Junius Du Pont — who appeared in “Casino Royale” — who’d like his help in discovering whether Auric Goldfinger is cheating him in canasta. That, of course, introduces the protagonist and antagonist and starts Bond toward an investigation into other illegal activities Goldfinger is involved in. The reimagined version of their meeting — the swimming pool scene in the 1964 movie “Goldfinger” — was shot at the Miami Fontainebleau Hotel.

Editor’s note: This story contains movie and novel spoilers. James Bond, MI6’s 007, slowly navigates his boat on the Amazon River as he checks a map. He hears a shot. Startled birds fly from their perch on a dead tree. As Bond hears a second shot, a close explosion throws water. There’s a second watery explosion. Bond swings his boat about going full throttle to escape. Another boat — armed with a mortar — appears and chases the secret agent. But, Bond’s boat is armed with drop mines and torpedoes. He takes out the chasing henchmen with them. But more appear — including the metal-toothed Jaws, who’s on Bond’s trail for the second time in the 007 movie franchise. And none of it happened on the Amazon River. Ah, the magic of movie-making. The St. Lucie River stood in for the Amazon. That action in the 1979 movie “Moonraker,” starring Roger Moore, all happened in St. Lucie and Martin counties. Spoiler alert — The waterfall isn’t on the St. Lucie River. The Vehicle Assembly Building at the Kennedy Space Center also appeared in “Moonraker.”

James Bond drops by Florida in novels Author Ian Fleming, who wrote the first 14 James Bond novels and several short stories, loved setting his tales all over the world. Florida cropped up in at least two of the Fleming-authored 007 works. That’s little surprise, because Fleming traveled to Florida at least twice in the 1940s and 1950s. In “Dr. No,” Julius No owns an island near Jamaica, Crab Key, from which is sabotaging rocket and missile tests at the Joint Long Range Proving Ground, Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, for the Soviets. The 1958 novel wasn’t throw-

ing out as outlandish an idea as it might now sound. When President John F. Kennedy addressed the nation during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962, he named only two specific locations in the U.S. Soviet midrange nuclear missiles threatened — Cape Canaveral and the nation’s capital. It was reasonably assumed in the ‘50s and ‘60s Soviets targeted Cape Canaveral for espionage and sabotage.

‘Live and Let Die’, ‘Goldfinger’ Before “Dr. No,” which is set in 1956, Bond dropped by Florida in “Live and Let Die.” The fortuneteller Solitaire and

he met in New York City and traveled together on the Silver Meteor, the Seaboard Air Line Railroad service that ran between New York City and Miami. Amtrak took over the route in the 1970s. “Live and Let Die” was set in 1952. Solitaire and Bond deboarded in St. Petersburg and meet up with CIA agent Felix Leiter, who, by the way, gets the worse of their stay in Florida. Mr. Big’s henchman, the Robber, does no better than Leiter had after he meets Bond at the exotic fish warehouse in St. Pete. Fleming knew a bit about the Silver Meteor and Florida. He’d ridden that train to Florida at least twice, and maybe three times. Once was with his wife,

As mentioned, Roger Moore, and surely stunt doubles, played James Bond on the St. Lucie River for “Moonraker.” The Kennedy Space Center, which made an appearance, also showed up in the 1967 movie “You Only Live Twice.” The 1965 movie “Thunderball” had moviegoers back in Florida. Some of that often-underwater movie was shot in Silver Springs near Ocala. Those Navy parachutists in “Thunderball” — cough, cough SEALs, excuse me — were jumping into the Atlantic at Miami Beach. Filmmakers were back in Miami to film parts of the 2006 version of “Casino Royale.” The Miami International Airport stood in for the Nassau International and Vaclav Havel airports. The Miami Museum made appearances, too. Farther south, 1989’s “License to Kill” was largely filmed in the Florida Keys. For example, the wedding reception at the start of the movie — that was filmed at a private home in Key West. Other Florida sites on the cellulose were the Ernest Hemingway Museum, the Coast Guard base, Naval Air Station, Key West, the Key West International Airport, the Key West Lighthouse, Mallory Square, Southernmost Point, and many more, including Seven Mile Bridge for the Franz Sanchez escape scene.

flavor of the book as well as its nice to see it back in print to appeal to new generations of readers. Reading “The Diamond Smugglers” one is led to believe that a portion of how the diamonds are stolen by mine workers was used by the producers of the James Bond film “Diamonds Are Forever.” Though not up to the quality of the Bond novels, “The Diamond Smugglers” is worth reading to see a different side of Fleming.

Thrilling Cities Ian Fleming Thomas & Mercer www.ianfleming.com.com 9781612185545, $14.95, www.amazon.com “If you write thrillers, people think that you must live a thrilling life and enjoy doing thrilling things.” So, begins “Thrilling Cities” the whirlwind world tour of fourteen municipalities by the creator of James Bond for the Sunday Times in England. His appraisals are fascinating accounts that are not your normal travel pieces because they are not about museums or other customary things. Instead they are observations of the high rolling world of casinos, fantastic food, bars, sex parlors and other related things. A bit risqué for its day Fleming persevered with his columns then published them in this volume. Now back in print with an added introduction the Fleming work is interesting reading though dated that leads readers to wonder if this excursion into a darker side of some of the most famous places including Tokyo was an influence for “You Only Live Twice” as well as some of his later works. Sadly, he died a short time after this book was published. We can only speculate other influences that might have come as a result of his jaunt. “Thrilling Cities” is a beautifully written, masterful travel log that is for any fan of Fleming and Bond to enjoy.

Casino Royale Ian Fleming Thomas & Mercer www.ianfleming.com.com 9781612185439, $6.99, www.amazon.com Casino Royale the first James Bond novel, made its debut in 1953 selling out in its first print run, within a month of its release. Later it was learned that President Kennedy had read and enjoyed one of the Fleming novels. After that, Fleming's books took off and in 1962 the movie series began that is still hot today. Sadly, he never got to see the success of his creation. He died in1964, the year the movie "Goldfinger" established the character of James Bond. “Casino Royale set the standard of writing that would be Flemings trademark from the very first words on the page. The work had all the great elements like high stake card games, a vicious enemy for Bond to take down as well as other great aspects. Reading the work today is even more fun as I have a different perspective than I when I was growing up. For those who have never read the Fleming works, and only know the film versions, “Casino Royale” is a perfect place to discover a different James Bond from the one they are familiar with.

The Diamond Smugglers Ian Fleming Thomas & Mercer www.ianfleming.com.com 9781612185484, $14.95, www.amazon.com “The Diamond Smugglers” was not the usual fare for Fleming, as there is no James Bond nor any reference to him. “The Diamond Smugglers is an account in conversations with Fleming, by an agent named John Blaize’ who infiltrated the world of diamond smuggling. The writing is often uninteresting but there are snippets as only Fleming could tell like this one. “The world of spies is as full of jargon as motor racing or film making….Most secret agents are snobbish about their calling.” For this edition there is a new introduction that adds a bit to the

death author Kingsley Amis was commissioned to write a new Bond adventure. “Colonel Sun” by Amis under the name Robert Markham was published 4 years after the death of Ian Fleming but takes place just after “The Man With The Golden Gun” the last novel by Fleming. In some ways “Colonel Sun was close to the Fleming books. Possibly because he had written “The James Bond Dossier” where he analyzed everything about the character, a short time before he was tapped to continue the series. “Colonel Sun” begins with the kidnapping of Bond’s superior M, then takes a lot of twists and tuns including some Russians and a beautiful lady who help Bond on the trail of M, to a smashing conclusion with a sinister Chinese villain, who takes great pleasure in the art of torture. The holders of the estate of Ian Fleming hoped to have more escapades of Bond under the Markham name but nothing developed until the 1980s when John Gardner was commissioned to write more Bond books. “Colonel Sun” was and still is a welcome addition to the cycle of James Bond novels to be enjoyed by any Bond fan.

Colonel Sun Vintage c/o Penguin Random House LTD www.penguinrandomhouse.com ISBN 9781764871451, $22.99, www. amazon.com “Colonel Sun” is of sorts a rebirth of the James Bond character, as well as the first non-Ian Fleming novel. After Ian Fleming’s

to wreak havoc on citizens of the world population. Horowitz once again moves the plot along with solid writing in the fold of Fleming that concludes the story with a satisfying ending. “Forever And A Day” is highly recommend reading for anyone who enjoys the Bond novels. James Bond will return and hopefully Anthony Horowitz will too to write another Bond thriller.

Double Shot Raymond Benson Putnam c/o Penguin Random House LTD www.penguinrandomhouse.com 9780399146145, $23.9, www.amazon.com James Bond is back in action in "Double Shot" On medical leave 007 is on a personal mission to avenge the killing of a friend. The group known as The Union that first appeared in "High Time to Kill" is out to destroy Bond with a perfect double who kills openly so that Bond will get the blame. The plot is complicated at times reminiscent of the best Fleming novels. "Double Shot" is a great Bond novel also in an audio version.

Trigger Mortis A James Bond Novel

Forever And A Day Anthony Horowitz Harper c/o Harper Collins Publishers www.harpercollins.com 9780062873620, $16.99 www.amazon.com The British secret service is very interested in a murder in the French Rivera as it involves one of their agents. M. sends in James Bond to investigate opens “Forever And A Day” the second novel by Anthony Horowitz. Bond hooks up with the mysterious Joanne Bochet who goes by the name of Madame 16.to track down the clues that lead to an ominous evil mastermind plot

Anthony Horowitz Harper c/o Harper Collins Publishers www.harpercollins.com 9780062395115, $15.99 www.amazon.com “Trigger Mortis” the first Horowitz narrative is close in style and feel to the original Fleming classics that were so much fun to read. Opening with a murder, “Trigger Mortis” races along at a brisk pace to its final shattering conclusion. Bond’s newest mission begins a short time after his battle with Goldfinger. Along the way are some familiar characters with some new and interesting allies thrown in. The villain is evil in the same mold as other Fleming, Bond enemies. Included in several chapters are pieces of unpublished works by Fleming himself that add to the novel. “Trigger Mortis” is the best James Bond story in many years that is a tribute to Ian Fleming’s original novels. James Bond is back in action, and better than ever.

FLEMING from page 7

Reuters. The pay was low, but he got to go to Moscow to witness Stalinism firsthand. But, the pay was low. His family didn’t approve. His mother used her connections to get Fleming a much better paying job at a financial company. He failed at it. She used her connections again to get her second, and disappointing, son a job as Rear Adm. John Godfrey’s assistant. In 1939 Fleming went to work for the director of naval intelligence and eventually given the handle 17F. The Admiralty would soon become one of the most exciting places on the planet to work. On Sept. 1, 1939, Germany invaded Poland. World War II was on in full cry.

Room 39 at The Admiralty, World War II Before Adolf Hitler betrayed his uneasy peace pact with the Soviet Union and Japan foolishly drew the United States into war, Britain could only barely hold onto survival. As German bombs fell on a scared and desperate Britain, Godfrey produced the “Trout Memo,” a series of

espionage schemes for Churchill and others to consider. It was full of outlandish ideas that threw out decency. For example, it said the British military could use recently deceased Brits camouflaged as military and intelligence officials with planted misinformation to trick the German military intelligence into opening vulnerabilities to exploit. The idea went against every shred of decency, it dishonored the dead — and it’d become Operation Mincemeat. In 1943 the Allies tricked the Abwehr into believing it had a drowned British naval intelligence officer carrying plans to invade Greece and stage a simultaneous deception attack on Sicily. The trout were biting. The Axis, acting on the misdirection, left the Allies’ real goals lightly defended. There’s a lot of evidence Fleming authored the “Trout Memo” and came up with most of the espionage ideas in it. He’s almost certainly the conceptual father of Operation Mincemeat. During the war years, Fleming rubbed shoulders with spies and spy bosses from all over the world. He formed the 30 Assault Unit, 30AU, to focus on seizing Nazi documents for Allied intelligence to decipher and exploit. Fleming reportedly told friends that after World War II was over, he was going to write a great spy novel.

Goldeneye, 1952 As the war wrapped up Fleming returned to Jamaica, where he’d attended Allied intelligence meetings. He bought some land to build a retreat house. He named it Goldeneye after one of the operations he was involved in during the war. Bond found work back in journalism. This time it was at the much more prestigious, and better paying, position of foreign manager at the company which owned The Sunday Times. A couple months a year Fleming went to Goldeneye to listen to the ocean lap the shores. An old flame, Ann Charteris, started spending time with him there. The only downside to their relationship in a Caribbean paradise was the whole she-was-married thing. She divorced in 1951, and soon thereafter Fleming and she planned to marry. To take his mind off the pressures of marrying at 43, Fleming started writing a spy novel, “Casino Royale.” Everybody who read it … thought it kind of sucked. Even Fleming. Since his older brother was a money-making book writer for Jonathan Cape, the publisher agreed to a small run of the book about a fictional jet-setting master spy named after a real ornithologist.
