Governor Rick Scott announced the kickoff of the 2016 Paychecks for Patriots, which matches up veterans with great careers in their communities. In recognition of Veterans Day, the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity (DEO) is partnering with the CareerSource Florida network, the Florida National Guard, the Florida Department of Veterans’ Affairs and participating Florida employers to connect veterans and their families with job opportunities. Scott has also declared November 7-11 as Paychecks for Patriots Week. Scott said, “Florida is proud to be the most military and veteran-friendly state in the nation, and we work hard to honor our many veterans and military members for their service and sacrifice. “The annual Paychecks for Patriots events are a great way to give back to our heroes and their families by providing more opportunities to find meaningful employment so they can live the American Dream they work so

The stockings were hung by the chimney with care in hopes that OASIS could get them all there. Merritt Island’s Operation America Standing in Support, OASIS, is having its 11th annual Stockings from Home on Saturday, Nov. 19, at Merritt Island’s Beef ‘O’ Brady’s, 1450 N. Courtenay Parkway. The event will be 8:30 a.m. to about noon. “It’s an opportunity to send troops stockings from home with snacks and hand games,” Tess Brady Heribacka, co-founder, said. “To share a little love during the holiday season to let them know they’re loved and appreciated.” OASIS started up during the height of operations Enduring and Iraqi Freedom. Care packages and cards for military personnel are among of its major functions. It does several themed mailings a year to military personnel serving overseas. Brady Heribac-

ka said the organization sends the packages to personnel the Department of Defense gives names and addresses for. The care packages volunteers take items for and fill at the upcoming Stockings from Home will mostly go to military personnel stationed in Iraq, Kuwait and Afghanistan. “We have a few soldiers in Africa,” Brady Heribacka said. There’s a short list of donation no-nos. “There are three things we are not permitted to send,” Brady Heribacka said. “That’s pork, porn and alcohol.” While some care-package organizations refuse to send tobacco products, OASIS doesn’t. Brady Heribacka said cigars are especially popular among the military personnel that receive them. Other popular consumables are: Powdered drink mixes; hot chocolate; gum and mints; wrapped fruit snacks; Slim Jim and other dried meat snacks; granola bars and other grain snacks; microwavable pop-
