Korean War vets help dedicate memorial on Veterans Day Ted Wilson

The Veterans Day ceremony at the Brevard Veterans Memorial Center was also the dedication of the Afghanistan Memorial to honor those who fought and are fighting in Operation Enduring Freedom. According to the U.S. Department of Veteran’s Affairs, Veterans Day is “a celebration to honor America’s veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.” It is celebrated on Nov. 11, to commemorate the cessation of hostilities in World War I, the “war to end all wars.” It is a day when veterans and civilians combine to honor those who have served, and for veterans to honor those who are currently serving. One would have to search hard to find a better example of veterans — who know best the sacrifices required of a service member — honoring those who currently serve, than the tribute the Korean War Veterans Chapter 210 gave to the Operation Enduring Freedom combatants. The Korean War veterans chapter, most of whom are in their 80s now, stood outside in the Florida heat, and also reached into their own pockets, to contribute more than $4,000 toward the new Afghanistan Memorial at the Memorial Center. The presentation of colors and the gun salute were expertly performed by the Brevard County Sheriff’s Honor Guard. The dedication of the Afghanistan Memorial was performed by Gold Star parents Donn A. Weaver, who retired as a foreign service officer, and his wife, Jeanne Weaver, parents of Todd Weaver (who was killed in action in Afghanistan in 2010), along with Todd Weaver’s brother, who also served and then worked for 18 months in the Embassy in Afghanistan.
