Dozens of red, white and blue-clad walkers from Indian River Colony Club laced up their sneakers on November 7 and hit the pavement to raise money for Veterans financially impacted by the coronavirus. Sponsored by the Residents Activity Council (RAC) at Indian River Colony Club, the special walk-a-thon raised $1,722 for Veterans who have lost jobs, housing or were otherwise affected by the pandemic. The 60 walkers chose a one, three- or five-mile walking route through the Viera 55+ neighborhood of predominantly military veterans. On November 11, retired Air Force Lt. Col. Brian Whalen presented the check from Indian River Colony Club to the Brevard Veterans Council, at the conclusion of the Veterans Day ceremony at the Veterans Memorial Center in Merritt Island. The funds raised at the walk-a-thon will be used to support several Veterans in urgent financial stress due to employment loss and other impacts related to the Covid pandemic.

Anniversary of Flight 19 a yearly reminder that service is dangerous enough without war Patrick McCallister FOR VETERAN VOICE

pmccallister@veteranvoiceweekly.com

I must have been about 9 when I watched the 1974 speculative documentary “The Devil’s Triangle.” That’s how I, like a lot of folks, learned about the mysterious Bermuda Triangle and how it steals away ships and planes without explanation. Honestly, I was hooked on the mystery and a Bermuda Triangle believer right off. But, hey, I was 9 and my critical faculties were still developing.

Bermuda Triangle Exhibit A — Flight 19 Dec. 5, 1945, five Navy Grumman TBM Avenger torpedo bombers with 14 crewmen on a routine training mission got lost over the Atlantic within easy reach of land if only they’d turned west. A rescue plane out of Naval Air Base Banana River, Training 49, mysteriously vanished, too, while looking for the Lost Squadron. In all, a loss of 27 Navy aviators in one day just months after the end of World War II. Yeah, everything needed for a sensationalistic writer to present a mystery not for explanation but for entertainment is there. And that’s just the kind of writer Vincent Gaddis was. When Gaddis recounted the story of Flight 19 and, it appears, coined the term “Bermuda Triangle” in 1964, his point was making a lot of mystery where there was little to sell more copies of a paranormal-specialty magazine. Sadly, it worked. Flight 19 was a military training accident. Everything about the loss of Flight 19 is explicable and it was a tragic military training accident. But that’s not how people talk about it. The Navy looked into the Lost Squadron in the months following the tragedy to figure out what went wrong and how to fix things. The Navy soon changed parts of its pilot training so something like Flight 19 wouldn’t happen again. I don’t believe it has, so the Navy’s changes seem to have worked. That’s the point we need to

Image courtesy of YouTube/LEMMiNo This 1950 AP wire story appears to be the basis, or at least start, of the Bermuda Triangle craze, although that term appears to have been coined by writer Vincent Gaddis for a 1964 article in Argosy. It’s noteworthy that this article was published on Oct. 29, the Sunday before Halloween. Sunday was the features day for newspapers in 1950, so this article was probably intended for holiday spooky entertainment, not journalistic investigation.

get into the Flight 19 narrative — it’s the world’s most famous military training accident and Exhibit A that everybody who’s served in uniform accepted risks in and far from combat zones.

Training accidents are a reality In 2019 the Army alone had 20 fatalities and 70 serious injuries in training accidents. In 2018 the Army had 18 soldiers die and another 66 seriously injured in training accidents. A lot of those were vehicular crashes, roll-overs and the like. But not all — 2020 started with the death of Master Sgt. Nathan Goodman, a Green Beret, dying in a parachute accident. He survived four

dangerous deployments to Afghanistan and died in uniform during a routine jump in Arizona. According to the congressional report “Trends in Active-Duty Military Deaths Since 2006,” published in July this year, from 2006 to 2018 nearly 32 percent of active-duty military deaths were training accidents, whereas about 16 percent were combat. By the numbers, that’s about 5,300 training deaths over those 12 years compared to 2,700 combat deaths. Not long after that report was released a sailor and seven Marines died in an amphibious assault vehicle training accident near San Clemente Island in California. Last month three soldiers were killed around 3:20 a.m. when their Bradley Fighting Vehicle rolled over in

water — during a training exercise. One of the killed in that incident was Sgt. First Class Bryan Jenkins, a 41-year-old Gainesville man. He joined the Army on Sept. 14, 2001, and twice served in Operation Iraqi Freedom, 2005 and 2008.

Dec. 5 is an opportunity I’m not faulting the military for training accidents. Servicemembers must train for uniquely dangerous situations, and that training is necessarily going to be risky at times. I’m not an expert on military training, and don’t know the circumstances surrounding the tragedies I named above. I, like all Americans, hope mili-

Letter to the EDITOR

Veteran, long a pillar of military community, honored by friends To the Editor:

Veterans at the DAV Hall. These events gave Veterans a place to gather and either share their individual “war stories,” or just enjoy the camaraderie, fresh coffee and warm pastry. Ron also served as Master of Ceremonies for Memorial Day and Veterans Day events at Port St. Lucie’s Veterans Memorial Park for a number of years, calling to attention the flag detail for the day. He never failed to recognize local and county dignitaries, and special guest speakers including his fellow Veterans and their families. To our longtime friend, “Ron, you have been cleared by the local air traffic controllers to a westerly direction, skyward bound up through the clouds to your new Heavenly Home; no call sign needed, our friend! Almighty God and your beloved Carol will be waiting for you with open arms.”

Dear Veterans and friends of St. Lucie County, Florida: I received the sad news on Nov. 16 of the passing of W/O Ron Knepshield, U.S. Army Retired, and current Chairman of United Veterans of St. Lucie County, Inc. I have known Ron and his beloved bride, Carol, for a number of years. Ron joins his beloved Carol, who passed away on September 23 of this year, while the community mourns the loss of these two wonderful people within a very short time. They will both be missed and remembered by those of us who are left behind; may they both Rest In Peace! Ron was well known in this county for his many years of service in numerous positions in veterans’ organizations in Port St. Lucie, including Commander of DAV Chapter 113, Commander of American Legion Post 355 and he was at the helm of United Veterans of St. Lucie County when he passed. Ron also served as the un-official historian of United Veterans from the beginning of the organization to the present. Ron was also involved in

Training 49 takes off into paranormal lore Patrick McCallister FOR VETERAN VOICE

pmccallister@veteranvoiceweekly.com

If Training 49 doesn’t ring any bells, maybe this will — Flight 19. The pair came together one night in a conflux of oddities leading to tragedies that became the stuff of spooky lore in Florida, the military, and among paranormal aficionados.

Flight 19 The weather was good at the Naval Air Station Fort Lauderdale that Wednesday afternoon. It was Dec. 5, 1945. America was charged with optimism. Japan had officially surrendered on Sept. 2, ending World War II, so America was getting a breather from war. Still, the military flight training had to go on. At about 2:10 p.m. five Grumman TBM Avenger torpedo bombers took off for a training assignment known as “Navigation Problem No. 1.” The pilots and crews — with one member missing — flew east from Florida and dropped simulated bombs over the Hens and Chickens Shoal, about two miles east of Plantation Key. After that they’d go farther east and turn north for Grand Bahama, then head back west to NAS Fort Lauderdale. The training pilots were getting in some dead reckoning practice. Lt. Charles Carrol Taylor was the instructing pilot. The training team seemed to be in good hands. Taylor had about 2,500 flight hours and served in the South Pacific on the USS Hancock. He had done flight instruction at the Naval Air Station Miami, too. Other than probably chancing on some rainclouds, the flight looked like it’d be smooth as can be. But at about 3:45 p.m., the Navy reports, Taylor radioed the flight tower to say he couldn’t see land. “We seem to be off course,” he

told the tower. The Navy’s history webpage, www.history.navy.mil, tells the story. The tower operators stepped out with binoculars and looked for Flight 19. They checked the radar. No luck. “We cannot be sure where we are,” Taylor late radioed again. “Repeat: Cannot see land.” The radio contact was mysteriously lost for about 10 minutes after that broadcast. Then one of the pilots reported — “We can’t find west. Everything is wrong. We can’t be

sure of any direction. Everything looks strange, even the ocean.” Intercepted plane-to-plane chatter over the next couple hours indicated Taylor was strangely disoriented, but oddly stubborn, too, as other pilots suggested they weren’t off course and just needed to turn around. Then it seemed he’d turned over flight leadership to another pilot. Then mysterious silence again for about 20 minutes. It was broken by a panicking voice. “We can’t tell where we are,” the

pilot told the tower. “Everything is…can’t make out anything. We think we may be about 225 miles northeast of base.” The speaker became increasingly incoherent, muddled. The last words the tower heard from Flight 19 were: “It looks like we are entering white water. We’re completely lost.” In all, 14 crewmen were lost, just vanished. No wreckage was found. And no one’s sure what “white water” meant. Why didn’t the pilots just look at their compasses, a reasonable person would ask. The Navy’s investigation concluded that it’s possible all of the compasses weren’t working normally. That conclusion would help fuel a cottage industry of speculative writing that proposed everything from alien abduction to intermittent magnetic anomalies off Florida’s coast generating spacetime vortexes. As satellites have mapped Earth’s magnetic and gravitational fields and found oddities, such as the huge South Atlantic Anomaly, the latter explanation has moved further from the paranormal to the scientific, although not all the way to space-time vortexes. The Navy explains a quirk about the 80th meridian, which passes east of Miami. “Known as the Agonic Line, it is one of two places in the world where true north and magnetic north are in perfect alignment and compass variation is unnecessary. An experienced navigator could sail off course several degrees and lead himself hundreds of miles away from his original destination.”

Training 49 The story of Flight 19 would be enough to pique anyone’s speculation toward the supernatural, but, in the famous words of television pitchmen, but wait, there’s more. Two preparing training flights out of Naval Air Station Ba-

Doomed admiral

For pressing ahead with Pearl Harbor attack, Yamamoto went down in annals of infamy Mary Kemper STAFF WRITER

mkemper@veteranvoiceweekly.com

While Americans had just enjoyed their Thanksgiving feasts a week before Nov. 26, 1941, a large fleet set sail from Japan intending to bring the U.S. Navy fleet at Pearl Harbor to its knees. The events leading up to the attack on Pearl Harbor are well chronicled, if hard to follow at times. But few know about the backbiting and near insubordination that went on behind the Japanese scenes, and how it contributed to the Japanese defeat. Though Adm. Chuichi Nagumo commanded the carrier group that launched the attack, it was Adm. Isokoru Yamamoto, chief of the Combined Fleet, who planned it — eventually sealing his own fate.

Career man vs. war hawk Nagumo had risen comfortably through the naval ranks. Most Veterans are aware of the kind of officer that keeps on getting promoted in spite of his or her lack of knowledge or experience, simply because they don’t rock the boat. Nagumo was one of these. Regardless, he was put in command of the carrier fleet that carried out the U.S. attack. Yamamoto, on the other hand, was fiercely resented by his peers for his can-do, go-ahead-and-fight mentality, and he was beloved by his subordinates. Nagumo did not want to launch the attack. He felt (rightly, as things turned out) that America’s vast as-yet untapped resources would enable her to quickly retaliate, and hard. Yamamoto, however, felt that some kind of retribution should be taken for the American oil embargo, which put a damper on Japanese territorial ambitions in the Far East (as was intended by President Franklin Roosevelt). He also

believed that the attack would deal a mortal blow to American morale, and force her to negotiate an end to the sanctions. The career man turned out to be right.

Yamamoto the tactician In the years leading up to the Pearl Harbor attack, Yamamoto was behind many innovations in Japanese aircraft. He was a superb tactician — to help solve the core problem of the war, oil resources, he deliberately planned a simultaneous attack in Malaya (now Malaysia) and Indonesia to secure oil reserves. It was a great plan, and seemed to work for a while. Trouble was, military resources were too thinly spread, and back home, politicians were bitterly divided on the issue. Yamamoto wrote to a colleague, according to Wikipe-

dia.com: “Should hostilities once break out between Japan and the United States, it would not be enough that we take Guam and the Philippines, nor even Hawaii and San Francisco. To make victory certain, we would have to march into Washington and dictate the terms of peace in the White House. I wonder if our politicians [who speak so lightly of a Japanese-American war] have confidence as to the final outcome and are prepared to make the necessary sacrifices.”

Early success, later disaster For the Japanese, World War II was always about oil — and Yamamoto shrewdly knew the Far Eastern countries he invaded had inadequate defenses. The British were roundly kicked out of Malaya and Singapore in a matter of

weeks or months. Early successes were rapid and lethal. This, plus the devastating attack on Pearl Harbor, seemed to cement Yamamoto’s fame in Japan, and the admiration of the militarist government. As we all know, the U.S. regrouped remarkably quickly, and began the process of hammering the Japanese into the ground, including destroying Japan’s precious oil.

Suicide and dogfight Nagumo, ever cautious, was blamed for not launching a “third wave” against Pearl Harbor, going after, yes, you guessed it, oil and gasoline depots. This could have indeed rendered the U.S. fleet crippled for far longer than it was. During the Battle of Mid-

ANNIVERSARY from page 3

tary experts investigate each accident to discover the problems that led to them and get those fixed. My point is training accidents are a way a lot of the women and men who’ve donned the uniform to serve our nation die. As a nation we don’t talk about that enough. I’ve made a decision that every year on Dec. 5 — the anniversary of the most well-known fatal military training accident — to personally memorialize the servicemembers who’ve given their lives while preparing to meet any enemy our nation may face. Flight 19 is Exhibit A of how dangerous military life and training are. I hope others reading this will do the same. Let’s mark the loss of 27 servicemembers between Flight 19 and Training 49 now 75 years ago by remembering all who’ve given their lives training to meet any crisis our nation may face.

ed fumes in the fuselage that somehow sparked.

from page 5 nana River were diverted to look for Flight 19, Training 32 and Training 49. At the time NAS Banana River was the primary search-and-rescue base for Florida. It was home to the Martin PBM Mariner, a long-range patrol flying boat. Oh, one of that plane’s less savory and seemingly predictive nicknames was “Flying Gas Tank.” The two planes took off from Banana River at about 7:30 p.m. Training 32 went east. Training 49 turned north. Training 32 checked in on time as it hunted for Flight 19. Training 49 just radio disappeared shortly after takeoff. At about 9 p.m., the crew of the SS Gaines Mills saw a fire on the ocean. That was about the same time the USS Solomons last apparent radar contact with Training 49. It had 13 crewmembers aboard. Training 32 had diverted from its hunt for Flight 19 to check out the reported fire about 25 miles east of New Smyrna Beach. The 32-member crew reported there was no lightning, or anything else to account for the apparent crash of Training 49. Many aviation experts believe Training 49 accumulat-

The aftermath That December night the Navy lost 27 over the Florida waters. The Navy committed some 300 boats and aircraft to looking for Flight 19. The Coast Guard, too, helped in the search along with an unknown number of civilians. After five days the Navy called off the search. If any of the pilots had survived the presumed crash of Flight 19 into the Atlantic, they had long since died in the salt water. The Navy originally laid most of the blame at the feet of Lt. Taylor on the vague grounds of “mental aberration.” His family got that overturned a couple years later, and the Navy changed its findings to causes unknown. The Navy made changes to its pilot training to prevent a repeat of Flight 19. It was all very creepy, but folks got back to living and put it behind them. Until there was a surge of interest in the paranormal in the 1960s. In the February 1964 issue of Argosy Vincent Gaddis recounted the tale of Flight 19 and Training 49. He seems to have coined the term “Bermuda Triangle” in that article. A decade later, 1974, author Richard Winer immortalized the variant term “The Devil’s

way, which he was also blamed for losing, he reportedly went into a state of shock and had to almost be forcibly dragged to safety. In July 1944, Nagumo committed suicide in Saipan. Yamamoto bulled ahead. He committed Combined Fleet units to a series of small actions across the south and central Pacific that stung the Americans, but suffered losses he could not afford. Three major efforts to beat the Americans moving on Guadalcanal brought on a pair of carrier battles that Yamamoto commanded personally — the Eastern Solomons and Santa Cruz Islands in September and October, and finally a wild pair of surface engagements in November, all timed to coincide with Japanese Army pushes. The effort was wasted when the army could not hold up its end of the operation. After Guadalcanal fell to the U.S., Yamamoto decided to go on a morale-boost-

Triangle” with a book by that title. The same year the book was adapted to a documentary film with narrator Vincent Price lending his spooky voice to the growing legend. No one has definitively found the remains of Flight 19. There are lots of crashed World War II era planes off Florida’s coasts, because a lot of pilot training was done here. Occasionally someone announces finding Flight 19. Those claims have always failed after further investigation. The Flight 19 planes and crew reappeared in the 1977 movie “Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” further spreading and immortalizing their strange story. The Avengers, in that movie, were found in the Sonoran Desert in pristine condition. The pilots later stepped off an extraterrestrial spaceship at Devil’s Tower in Wyoming at the same chronological ages as when they disappeared in 1945. Back in the real world, in April of 2017 Patrick Air Force Base dedicated a memorial to the crew of Training 49. The lost were: Walter G. Jeffrey; Harry G. Cone; Roger M. Allen; Lloyd A. Eliason; Charles D. Arceneaux; Robert C. Cameron; Donald E. Peterson; James F. Osterheld; John T. Menendez; Alfred J. Zywicki; Wiley D. Cargill; Philip B. Neeman; and James F. Jordon.

Little did Yamamoto know that Americans had decoded intelligence of this trip. A squadron of P-38 Lightning aircraft was dispatched to ambush Yamamoto’s plane and its entourage. Though the Japanese Zero escort engaged in dogfights against the American fighters, then-Lt. Rex T. Barber was able to locate and shoot down Yamamoto’s plane over Pacific waters. It was the end of what started out an illustrious career, but which ended in ignominy. Yamamoto seemed to have an inkling of the enormity of the deed he had planned in attacking the United States. His famous quote: “I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant, and Source: Wikipedia.com fill him with a terrible resolve.” Americans had much to give thanks for Col. Rex T. Barber (shown here as a lieutenant colonel) on that Nov. 26. Soon we would be put to shot down the Japanese transport plane carrying the test of just how much that meant to us. Adm. Isokoru Yamamoto over the Pacific.

Trump As 2016 gave way to 2017 a new president assumed the White House, Donald Trump. Under his watch Cape Canaveral has interred, on average, 1,800 a year so far. It’s expected to reach 2,400 a year soon. Among those interred is Rear Adm. Alene Duerk, the Navy’s first woman admiral. The Seminole County resident died in 2018 at 98. In accord with her wishes, she was interred in a quiet ceremony surrounded by family and longtime friends.

Another notable individual at Cape Canaveral National Cemetery is Tuskegee Airman Edwin Cowan. His family and local Veterans reinterred his wife Theda and him last year. The pair had been quietly interred at their church in Brevard County. The Brevard Veterans Memorial Center contacted the Cowans’ family after the Cape Canaveral National Cemetery opened, urging them to consider moving Edwin and Theda to a location better suiting their important roles in history. Murphy said whoever it is, she or he will be among the most fortunate. “It’s an honor to actually be in this position and take care of the grounds and the families,” Murphy said. He said the community spanning from the Treasure Coast to Ormond Beach has ensured Cape Canaveral National Cemetery’s success. Murphy plans on staying in the area after retirement.
