this year. From the start of the year through December 15, 2020, the dollar amount of individual grants issued by the Fund jumped by 59%, the number of service members receiving assistance increased by 73% and the number of grants increased 122% compared with the same period last year. Grants designated specifically to provide support to families with a critically ill child more than doubled, from $172,000 in 2019 to $416,000 this year.

'Santa Todd' goes virtual to provide holiday joy to children C.J. Lovelace

DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE

Todd Bishop started playing Santa Claus a couple years ago as a way to give back during the holidays, but things have changed quite a bit over the past year. With mandatory physical distancing and mask usage in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Bishop had to get a little more creative in sharing the holiday magic with youngsters. “Santa Todd,” as he’s known, has gone virtual. “This has actually been a silver lining sort of story,” said Bishop, director of the business support office at the U.S. Army Medical Materiel Agency. “ … This has enabled me to find different ways that Santa Todd can raise charitable contributions.” Bishop has leveraged social media and video calls to facilitate more than two dozen virtual visits with children, as well as virtual photos with Santa in coordination with a non-profit organization called Gold in Fight, a foundation dedicated to serving families in need due to hardships caused by pediatric cancer. He works closely with parents to plan the visits, learning about the children in advance to help personalize the experience. Even something small like knowing the kid’s name before making a FaceTime call can really make a

difference. “Having that information ahead of time, it helps create the magic,” Bishop said. “Sometimes I’ll have the parents hide a gift or a treat for the kid somewhere in the house then I, as Santa, can direct them to it. There’s amazement there, like ‘how in the heck did he do that?’”

“I usually conspire with the Elf on the Shelf, whose name I also know going into the call,” he said with a laugh. Along with personalized virtual visits and photos, Santa Todd has participated in a Facebook Live event for a local charter school and recorded a video reading a children’s book for a military unit in Germany. He also was interviewed for a podcast that aired on Dec. 21. The feedback from parents and, obviously, children has been overwhelmingly positive. One of those parents, Army Maj. Zachary Patterson, who works with Bishop as deputy director of USAMMA’s BSO, said it was a great way to leverage technology and stay safe while having some fun with his 3-year-old daughter. “It was a good opportunity for us to still have the magical Santa experience without potentially exposing ourselves to an environment that may or may not be safe,” Patterson said, like visiting a mall Santa, for example. “It worked out even better, actually,” he added. “We were able to send our daughter’s letter to Santa, and he was able to open it during the call. It’s a way he can further personalize the experience.” Bishop hopes his efforts not only raise donations, but also spread some much-needed holiday joy. “I think people need it, especially [now],” he said.

People we met in 2020 Patrick McCallister

ANALYSIS FOR VETERAN VOICE

pmccallister@veteranvoiceweekly.com

Meeting interesting people is one of the perks of journalism. But, 2020 wasn’t much of a year for meeting new people. The SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19 pandemic quashed a lot of veterans-organization’s events. Still, as always, working for Veteran Voice I got to meet some interesting folks in the veterans and advocates community. Here are a couple folks we met for the first time in 2020.

Photo courtesy of Danny and Jackie Garcia The Rev. Daniel “Danny” Garcia has walked more than 26,000 all over the world to share his faith, pray for peace, and show his patriotism.

Rev. Daniel “Danny” Garcia In February Veteran Voice met the Rev. Daniel “Danny” Garcia. The Vietnam-era Marine Corps veteran is a regular guy living in Brevard County. But, he’s done some extraordinary things. Ask him about it and, “Jesus.” The man took the Bible literally when it exhorts, “Walk by faith.” That’s what Garcia did. He walked. He walked all over the world to spread God’s love wherever there was war, poverty and misery. He stopped counting how far he’d walked at 26,000 miles. It was a mission he started with $48 in his pocket and faith God would tend to his needs. Garcia founded the ministry Global Walk, which is now in the process of folding. “I’m an evangelist,” Garcia told me. “My

job is to share the love of Christ with everyone, which I try to do all the time.” Garcia authored the as-yet unpublished “Marines Don’t Cry” with his wife, Jackie. She retired from the Air Force as a Lieutenant Colonel. The title comes from Garcia’s recollections of his 1950s youth in Spanish Harlem watching war movies in which Marines didn’t cry. He became a Marine and— “If you read the book, you’ll see why this Marine did cry,” Garcia told me. He talks about the many times he’s watched Marines cry. Crying for Garcia has taken on spiritual dimensions. It’s one of his ways to connect to God. Crying, Garcia now realizes, is a prayer. “All my life, I’ve had to cry in some form,” Garcia said. “That’s been the door for God to take my tears and take me to the next place in my mission.” I loved hearing his story about walking into Iraq at a time when the country was torn apart in war. A few members of the U.S. military met up with Garcia to give him escort. As they approached an Iraqi city, thousands of locals came rushing from every direction. His escort got skittish, and Garcia told them to relax — they didn’t have enough bullets if things were going south anyhow. Since the group of Americans was at the crowd’s mercy, it was better to stay calm and find out what they wanted. The crowd’s intentions soon became evident. “They were singing to me, because I was walking for them,” Garcia reflected. “I was walking for their children. I was walking for peace.” Then— “Out of the crowd, a little girl, 4 or 5, came up to me with flowers,” Garcia told me, then he audibly paused. The Marine was crying again.

MJ Dowling In April Veteran Voice met Martin County artist MJ Dowling, who served in the Air Force from 1987 to 2007. She owns Blu H2O Art, www.bluh2oart.com. That’s “Blu H2O Art” as one word. Note that the “O” is the letter, not the number zero. In March her works was on exhibit at The Palm Room in Sewall’s Point. Dowling was excited to be that month’s exhibit at the Martin Artisans Guild’s gallery. Turned out those works might just as well had been in her closet. “We had our opening, then had to shut the show down within days,” she said. The SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19 pandemic closed down art shows, galleries, and exhibitions, so Dowling suddenly had time to volunteer somewhere. Her college degree is in architecture, so she got involved with Treasure Coast Hospice, which is always in need of an architect.

Image courtesy of MJ Dowling Air Force Veteran MJ Dowling owns Blu H2O Art. She designed a Veterans memorial for Hospice of the Treasure Coast. Fundraising to construct it should begin in 2021.

Agnes Palmer, manager of philanthropic partnerships, soon approached Dowling about hospice’s longstanding wish to erect memorials to veterans at contemplation gardens at its facilities. Dowling’s artist’s and veteran’s brain immediately went to work. What was clear to her was everybody at hospice wanted way more than a bench with a plaque. Dowling created a vision — and blueprint — for a veterans memorial that’d be an experience. “This memorial is not going to be one sided,” she told me. “It’s truly going to be a 360 experience.” One of the things Dowling considered is the fact there are six branches of the Armed Forces including the new Space Force. There’s also the United States Merchant Marine with members being counted as wartime veterans during certain periods, and other uniformed services doing dangerous military missions including the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration Commissioned Officer Corps. Members of the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey Corps and others have been assigned to and sometimes died on wartime military missions. Dowling had to create an image that fit the diversity of modern and historic military members and veterans. Men and women of all races from diverse backgrounds doing hugely different jobs and missions.

VACCINES

VETERAN VOICE • DECEMBER 31, 2020 • 5

COVID-19 shots have entered pipeline Patrick McCallister FOR VETERAN VOICE

pmccallister@veteranvoiceweekly.com

Vaccines are at the Department of Veterans Affairs medical centers, but most Veterans Health Administration enrollees will need to keep their sleeves down for now. The Orlando VA Medical Center, Lake Nona, started COVID-19 vaccinations to Veterans residing in its longterm care Community Living Center on Dec. 14. That was the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine. Orlando was one of 37 VA medical centers nationwide and the only one in Florida ready with the needed refrigeration for the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. At press time, the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine has received needed green lights and is being rushed to medical facilities. The Moderna vaccine doesn’t have the rigorous refrigeration requirements the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine does. So, when will Veterans get their VAccines? See what we did there?

Dr. Nick Beckey Dr. Nick Beckey, chief of pharmacy services at the West Palm Beach VA Medical Center, gave Veteran Voice an exclusive interview on Friday, Dec. 18, shortly before the Moderna approvals were breaking news, which Beckey anticipated would happen. He emphasized that much of what he could offer was preliminary as the VA responded to rapid developments. At press time, West Palm didn’t have any COVID-19 vaccines to give. “The first Veterans to get needles in their arms are in the (West Palm VA) Community Living Center,” he said. He predicted that West Palm would likely have vaccines for the CLC by Monday, Dec. 21. “We are aggressively going to hit our CLC residents.,” Beckey said. There were, at press time, about 100 Veterans in the

Photos courtesy of the Orlando VA Medical Center Army veterans Daniel Davis were among the first to receive the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine at the Orlando VA Medical Center. Orlando was one of 37 VA facilities that got the first batches of the vaccine.

West Palm CLC. After that — “There are four key groups of Veterans in the highest priority list we’ll be inviting in,” explained Beckey. Those are the homeless, those with organ transplants, those on hemodialysis, and those on chemotherapy. The four groups are based on a risk stratification by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s recommendations.

And the rest? Beckey said since COVID-19 vaccines are brand new, there aren’t predictable production and distribution patterns yet. So, offering timelines for mass vaccinations is impossible. However, he said, after the VA gets to CLC residents and frontline workers — many of

whom are Veterans — there will be prioritizing for the lineup. “COVID disproportionately affects those 85 and up,” he said, and soon added, “When we go to the general population we won’t have enough to say, ‘Those 65 and up [will be] come one and come all.’” However, Beckey offered with cautious optimism — “My gut feeling is, we will definitely be able to vaccinate everybody who wants it by June.”

In the meantime While Veterans enrolled in the VA await their vaccination opportunities, Beckey offered this caution: “The COVID itself, don’t underestimate this stuff,” said

Beckey. “The coronavirus is deadly. We’ve had way more people than we’d like to have seen pass away from this. And there are people with long-term affects after getting infected by this.” The CDC urges folks to help slow the spread of the SARSCoV-2/COVID-19 virus by wearing masks when in public, avoiding crowds when possible, and maintaining as much distance as possible from others. “Be patient,” Beckey urged. “Know that we’ve got a lot of hard-working individuals waiting to be deployed with the vaccines. We’ll be getting it in the arms of people as fast and safely as possible.” Information and updates about the vaccine are at www. va.gov/health-care/covid-19vaccine.

JUSTICE AT LONG LAST

Harmony’s victory means victory for all victims of military sexual trauma

Mary Kemper STAFF WRITER

mkemper@veteranvoiceweekly.com

The mills of God grind slowly, but they grind exceedingly small, the Bible says. For Veteran Harmony Allen, they have ground all the way to justice. Now the sexual assault victim can finally walk in the sun. No less than the Supreme Court of the United States heard her case, and sentenced her attacker to his full term in prison. Not only that, but a law has been enacted in her name, changing the rules forever in favor of no statute of limitations on military sexual assault. More than 20 years ago, an eager Air Force trainee was violently assaulted by an instructor while she was in training, as previously reported in Veteran Voice. Harmony duly reported the attack, and it was prosecuted — sort of. The perpetrator, Richard Collins, was found guilty, and sentenced under the Uniform Code of Military Justice to 16 years, but only served 2 ½ years. This was unconscionable. You can do an internet search on Harmony’s ugly injuries to see that this was a terrible crime that was more or less swept under the rug — so much so that she has suffered PTSD ever since. The military has long been accused, often rightly, of ignoring sexual assault and the trauma its victims suffer. Luckily, Harmony now has the companionship of Gunny, her service dog — and the love and support of husband, family and friends. Many other victims suffer alone.

Act of courage Harmony did not take the situation sitting down. It is a sad fact that victims of sexual trauma do not report the crime due to fear of retaliation, or other reasons. Harmony chose to fight. She came to the attention of L.A., a former federal law enforcement agent, who became her friend and advocate. But the lonely fight to make Collins fully pay for his crime dragged on, year after year. The main problem: Despite being found guilty and sentenced to jail time, Harmony’s rapist was released because of a decision by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces misinterpreting the Congressionally-mandated statute of limitations on sexual assault. From the military prosecution to courts of appeal, appeal after appeal, Harmony’s efforts came to naught. It is left to the imagination what a toll this took on her own health, and those who loved and supported her. Her case eventually reached all the way

Photo courtesy of L.A. Veteran Harmony Allen, left, with her service dog, Gunny, leaves the office of U.S. Rep. Brian Mast, FL-18, at the Rayburn Building of the Capitol in Washington, D.C., during hearings on her Supreme Court hearing on charges of sexual assault by a supervisor. to the Supreme Court. That in itself is something most of us, much less most frightened victims, could even imagine. But Harmony, with the help of her husband, L.A. and support from other loved ones, did it, not knowing whether she’d prevail. But prevail she did.

High level advocate Harmony’s case came to the attention of U.S. Rep. Brian Mast (FL-18), himself a Veteran amputee of Operation Enduring Freedom. Mast’s help boosted Harmony’s efforts to seek justice in a bigger way. He helped make sure that her case did not fall through the cracks. He wrote to the Solicitor General, Noel Francisco, requesting legal redress, and it was granted. From there, the path was cleared for Harmony’s case to proceed to the Supreme Court. And finally, the Court found in Harmony’s favor. Not only does Collins have to go back to prison to serve his full term, but the law is now changed, to erase the statute of limitations against charges of military sexual assault. “Harmony’s Law,” that bears her name, will forever protect fellow victims. “I could not be happier for Harmony

Allen and her family knowing that this massive miscarriage of justice has been righted once and for all,” Mast said in a press release. L.A., ever the agent, put it succinctly, but with all the emotion contained in the years of helping and advocating for her friend: “We won!” And as for Harmony, her life was forever changed on that terrible day only a few weeks into Air Force training. But if courage is “ordinary people doing extraordinary things,” her fight has changed the world in a grand way. “I feel like I can begin healing now,” Harmony told news service MSN. In the years Harmony has been fighting the case, she said, survivors of rape have written to her, sometimes asking, “Should I press charges against my rapist?” “I’ve had to tell them, ‘Don’t go for charges yet,’ because I didn’t want their cases to be dismissed,” Allen said. “But now that the Supreme Court has ruled in favor, I can tell all those victims: Go ahead. Go get justice.” If you, or someone you know, needs help dealing with military sexual trauma, call the VA hotline at 800-273-8255, then select 1 — or text 838255 — or start a confidential online chat at www.veteranscrisisline.net/get-help/chat.

COVID-19 CONSUMES THE YEAR

Patrick McCallister FOR VETERAN VOICE

pmccallister@veteranvoiceweekly.com

As December winds down it’s that time when I look back through my stories to highlight a few of the most important developments that affected Florida’s veterans over the last year. Let’s face it, a zoonotic coronavirus that apparently jumped from bats to humans in 2019 tyrannically ruled 2020 in the Sunshine State, nation and world. SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19 had far-reaching effects on the veterans community that’ll probably linger for years.

SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19 arrives In January and February the world seemed so normal. But there was a new severe acute respiratory syndrome, SARS, marching its way through the world crashing everything in its wake. The Florida Department of Health announced the first cases of COVID-19 in the Sunshine State on March 2. It was official, the new coronavirus was here and it’d debilitate veterans organizations in numerous ways. Gov. Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency in all 67 counties on March 9. He issued orders that shut down various businesses and organizations offering some public accommodations in April. Among those closed were veterans posts that serve food and beverages. For example, about 160 Department of Florida VFW posts, among others. The “Safe. Smart. Step-by-Step. Plan for Florida’s Recovery” Phase 1 reopening started in May. The Phase 2 started in June for most counties. Some of the Phase 2 reopening was scaled back for some weeks with prohibitions on businesses serving drinks for on-site consumption. Phase 3 started at the end of September and essentially reopened Florida. But people were, and are, skittish to go around a lot of others.

COVID-19 impacts veterans community Detailing all the ways the temporary post closures hurt veterans organizations would take a trilogy of non-fiction books. There was the lost money from food and beverage sales, of course. In addition, many posts with canteens do hall rentals for outside events. That, too, was closed. The hall rentals not only generate income for posts, but they also give them positive exposure to the community, which helps develop volunteers and donors. The event rentals are also an opportunity to get veterans in the community stepping into posts for, say, small conferences and other events. Once there, they sometimes find

out they qualify to join the posts and do so. Other things curtailed fundraising events, too. The Florida VFW, for example, effectively lost poppy distribution for 2020. Grocery stores, where the distributions largely happen, were reticent to allow volunteers out approaching people. Events such as the storied Florida Vietnam and All Veterans Annual Reunion in Brevard with its annual kickoff of the Vietnam Traveling Memorial had to cancel for 2020. The 2021 reunion, which is hosted by Vietnam and All Veterans of Brevard, is scheduled for April 15 to 19. Additionally, the state closed its seven veterans nursing homes to visits and new admissions for several months. COVID-19 also slowed the opening of the much-anticipated Ardie R. Copas State Veterans’ Nursing Home in Port St. Lucie. The global pandemic didn’t slow construction, but it did greatly slow the state’s efforts to equip and staff the facility to open it once it’s built.

COVID-19 erodes veterans employment gains Bureau of Labor Statistics released the last monthly employment numbers for 2019 on Jan. 10 in 2020. In December of 2019 the national seasonally adjusted unemployment rate among veterans dropped to 2.9 percent, down from 3.3 percent in November that same year. It was a record low unemployment rate among veterans. “Additionally, the veteran unemployment rate for the calendar year of 2019 was 3.1%, which is the lowest annual veteran unemployment rate since 2000,” the bureau said in a statement accompanying the December 2019 jobs report. “This is a decline from last year’s veteran unemployment rate of 3.5%.” That all crashed by March. In April, the first full month of recording pandemic-related job losses, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate among veterans climbed to 11.8 percent nationally. That dropped to 9.1 percent in May, then 8.8 percent in June. July and August both saw continuing drops in unemployment among veterans. They were 8 and 6.6 percent unemployment among veterans respectively. Unemployment among veterans bumped up in September with a 6.8 percent seasonally adjusted rate. That dropped to 5.9 percent in October, then went up to 6.3 percent in November. The December 2020 rate hasn’t been released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics at this writing. But, it’s safe to say the annual unemployment rate among veterans will be at least double for 2020 than it was for 2019.

COVID-19 claims veterans’ lives The saddest aspect to the SARS-CoV-2/

COVID-19 pandemic is the lives lost. The VA reported that there were more than 1,000 veterans’ deaths in November, the worst month for veterans in the pandemic so far. It’s possible December will overtake November as the deadliest month for veterans in the pandemic. COVID-19 is especially dangerous to older folks and those with respiratory conditions. Florida is home to about 500,000 Vietnam-era veterans who are among those most vulnerable to the coronavirus. The state has about 100,000 Korean-era veterans, and upwards to 40,000 who served during World War II. At press time, Dec. 20, the Department of Veteran Affairs is reporting at its COVID-19 National Summary that nationwide more than 5,500 veterans it’s aware of are known to have died due to COVID-19 complications. The number is identical to when Veteran Voice checked on Dec. 16. Florida accounts for about 320 of those veterans’ deaths in the VA’s reporting. These are, even as they’re reported by the VA, old numbers and veterans lost to COVID is almost certainly much higher. On the day the VA is reporting Florida veterans’ COVID deaths at about 320 it’s saying there have been about 8,600 in the Sunshine State overall. On the same day the state health department is reporting more than 25,000 deaths in Florida. But, as the year wraps up there’s good news.

Vaccines arrive at VA On Dec. 14 the Orlando VA Medical Center started administering the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine to veterans at its Community Living Center. By Dec. 16 it started giving healthcare workers the same vaccine. Orlando was one of the first group of 37 VA medical centers with the vaccine. “Ultimately, the department’s goal is to offer the vaccine to all Veterans receiving care at VA,” said Sec. Robert Wilkie in a press release. “As increased vaccine supply is obtained, VA plans to distribute these vaccines at additional facilities to provide the vaccine to more Veterans and employees.” The Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine is administered in two doses 21 days apart and is supposed to have a 95 percent effectiveness. At press time, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has approved use of the awaited COVID-19 vaccine from Moderna, which won’t need specialized refrigeration. The chief of pharmacy at the West Palm Beach VA Medical Center told Veteran Voice it’s likely the Moderna vaccine will be available to veterans at the Community Based Outpatient Clinics, while the Pfizer-BioNTech will be available at the medical centers.

The centerpiece of Dowling’s working concept is a walkway leading toward two blocks forming a doorway to evoke the idea of stepping through to the afterlife. “You’re going to be looking at the back of the service member,” Dowling said. “It’ll be a shimmering image of someone saluting and leaving.” That’s an aluminum silhouette of someone saluting evoking a sense of honoring the departed and a sense of one going on a final mission into the afterlife. The blocks will have stars on blue fields along with red and white stripes. Dowling aims for them to be asymmetrical with 10 stars on left, 11 on right. “I, though my design, can silently do the 21 gun salute,” the artist explained. In a recent email, Dowling said the design is in the final stage of review and the first will be built at the Stuart location. She said, “Hospice expects to begin fundraising efforts early in the new year.”

Sherry Hobson Veteran Voice met Sherry Hobson in January. She’s on a mission to stomp down deaths by suicide among veterans by running. The 76-year-old can probably outrun most 20-yearold Marines. She’s an ultramarathoner who was raising money for Connected Warriors, an organization that gives veterans free yoga classes to help them manage post-traumatic stress. “I’ve got (jerseys) that say ‘Supported by Connected Warriors’ on the back and ‘Stop 22’ on the front,” Hobson told me. The “Stop 22” is a reference to the famous number once circulated by the Department of Veteran Affairs that there was an average of 22 deaths by suicide a day among veterans. While the VA now holds the number is 20 the “22” has become recognized as a symbol for death by suicide among veterans. Hobson, by the way, does know the VA has amended its daily deaths by suicide estimate downward, but the nurse — who’s still working in medicine — strongly suspects

Hobson picked “76” because she turned 76 during the run.

deaths by suicide in general and for veterans in particular are underreported. Hobson grew up before the Education Amendments of 1972, meaning before Title IX. That famously opened school sports to more girls and young women. Hobson was 22 when Kathrine Switzer made a stir by being the first woman to run the Boston Marathon — against the rules and in defiance of the officials. In a world that resisted women athletes, Hobson found ways to be around sports all her life. But it’s not like she was ever part of arguments about whether Brooks, Nike or Reebok made the best running shoes. If you’re not a runner, just know those footwear arguments make politics and religion seem tame. “I started running when I was 70,” Hobson said. “I had done a breast cancer 60-mile threeday walk. I’m a pretty fast walker. I thought, you know I bet I can run.” Hobson — remember she’s a career medical practitioner — went to a doctor to get a

checkup before she started a running regimen. Doctors aren’t immune from sexism or ageism, or sexism and ageism. Or maybe just cynicism about people’s commitments to health and fitness. “The doctor sort of patted me on the head and said, ‘Oh yeah, you can run a marathon,’ probably thinking I’d never do it,” Hobson said. Yeah, she did that marathon in 2017 at 74. Not quite challenging enough for Hobson. So, she signed up for A Race for the Ages. Describing how that annual run in Tennessee works is a bit complicated, but suffice to say it’s an ultramarathon plus event. Hobson ran 113 miles over three days. She did the first 50 miles Day 1. Veteran Voice had to ask Hobson for her tips to older folks thinking about getting in better shape. “Start stretching,” she said. “Even just try to touch your toes.” If you can’t, just stretch as far as you can and build up. Hobson strongly urged older veterans to get into yoga, and Connected Warriors is a great way to do that. More about that organization is at www. connectedwarriors.org.

Kris Hasenauer Veteran Voice met Kris Hasenauer just a few weeks ago. He was at Florida State University when the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks came. He was studying medicine at the time, so immediately went to the Army recruiter and asked what he could do to help the nation. Yes, for all the bashing of millennials, those were the women and men who marched into recruiting stations on Sept. 12, 2001 to serve our nation in wartime. “I made a career of special operations medical,” Hasenauer told me. He’s in the 20th Special Forces Group, Florida National Guard. The 3rd Battalion is headquartered in Florida and is part of the US Southern Command. Hasenauer is also the owner of the relatively new Emerald Medical in Fort Pierce, which was started to be a mobile medical practice that could set up just about

anywhere in the world in no time. But, SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19. With the global pandemic crushing his intended market, Hasenauer turned his attention toward the about 11 million veterans who don’t get services through the Veterans Health Administration, and those thousands who now qualify to get some of those services outside the VA medical centers. With the highly-contagious airborne bug around, Hasenauer told me Emerald Medical is doing two things for patients. One is the increasingly common telehealth appointments. The other harkens back to a time few remember when phones weren’t smart…or even mobile. “We do house calls,” Hasenauer said. “Instead of having to go to the doctor, we’ll come to you.” That doctor by the way, Dr. Edil Josue Agosto, is still serving in the Army Reserve. He’s bilingual, too, speaking fluent Spanish. Emerald Medical is online at www.emerald-medical.com.
