Nearly 1,000 people came to Memorial Island, Vero Beach, Jan. 30 for the awarding of the Silver Star Medal to Marine Corps veteran Sgt. Sylvester B. “Mac” McIntosh, Wabasso, for heroic actions during the Vietnam War. Due to paperwork for the medal going astray, McIntosh’s Silver Star was belatedly awarded “for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy” as a squad leader with Company A, 1st Battalion, 9th Marines, in Vietnam on May 13, 1967. The ceremony was hosted by the Veterans Council of Indian River County and the Vietnam Veterans of Indian River County. The Silver Star Medal was presented by retired Marine Lt Col. Al Slater and retired Marine Master Sgt. Dennis Lee, who

The planes take off on March 11, but the tickets are flying off the shelf now. “It’s going to be a heck of a show,” Ron Davis, public relations officer at the Valiant Air Command Museum, said. “This is our 39th show.” The Valiant Air Command Museum’s annual TICO Warbird Airshow will be on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, March 11 to 13. After 39 years, there’s a bunch of tradition to the yearly airshow. But there’s still plenty of innovation, too. Opening day will have something new. “It will be our first evening show,” Davis said. The gates will open at noon and there’ll be static displays, ground shows and a short afternoon show all leading up to the big

enchilada. “About 6 p.m., about 20 minutes before sunset, we’ll kick off an hour long show,” Davis said. He added, “That show will run from about 6 (p.m.) to a little after 7 (p.m.). Then we’ll have fireworks.” That’ll put some boom into the room. But, there’s more to this evening show than a couple lighted planes. There’s a MiG-17F. The Soviet plane came with something no other had in the 1950s. It could, at the pilot’s command, inject additional fuel into the jet’s pipes after the turbine. In other words, the MiG has the afterburner. The afterburner is horribly fuel consuming, but along with kicking in some instant thrust it
